I would say no one has more love for the game than Derek Montia going tarps off yet again, walking up to the Raptors, going tarps off for a second time on the show. Let's go! I'm not supposed to go tarps off on this show, Damon. Are you kidding me? There's a bunch of nerds on Twitter right now calling me fat.

You think I'm not going to go tarps off on this show? I might never wear a shirt again. What is the point? when I put one on, only bad things happen. And when I take it off, good things do. Someone, Cornollio said, starting a petition for Derek to remain shirtless the rest of the season. It's amazing.

It might be tough in the locker room, Derek, if you're asking questions of the guys without your shirt on. I know, I know, but don't you think they would understand? You're going to have to make it work. Yeah, they would appreciate it. Oh, man. Baseball players are superstitious. If you aren't fired up by this,

I think you should go watch a different sport is what I think. But welcome in to all of you guys. That voice is my better half. It is the one, the only Damon Dog, aka Damon Farrell on the ones and twos. The man who was going glizzy for glizzy with me tonight in the All You Can Eat section because we were drowning our sorrows watching this Diamondback season slip away before our very eyes as they looked like they were going to lose once again to the Chicago Cubs.

And once again, their offense was absolutely trashed tonight until suddenly late in the game. It wasn't. and I can't say enough about how exciting this game was, but more importantly, and again, we get super hyperbolic, we get super insane on this show, as you can tell, I'm sitting here shirtless as we speak, but I will say, there's just something special about this team, man.

And I mean, I know, again, that this seems like a lot. It seems crazy to say on August 25th that they saved their season, but damn it, Damon, how am I not supposed to feel? like the Diamondbacks just saved their season by winning this game tonight. It feels like this was one of, if not the biggest victory of the year. And I know we've said that probably at least 20 times this season. And we meant it all 20 times. But as it stands right now, this with all of the things that this team has been going through,

certainly is the most important victory the Diamondbacks have had in their 2026 season. Derek, it's, you know, me and you were, I mean, talk about, the dying back season being an emotional roller coaster. Me and you were just... I'll at least put on the... I was going to say, do I need to go tarps off right now? You might do, but...

It didn't feel right with the one-times off in the one-time zone. Let me counterbalance it a little bit here. Grooty wants me to leave it off and Grooty might be right, but I'm throwing the Serfiantus back on because holy crap, what a win. Derek, we were going through it all night. As you said, there was a point where I looked at you in like the four. fourth or fifth inning and I said, how, how insane is it that we did a takeover to watch the Diamondbacks funeral right in front of our very eyes? I mean, it was hard not to feel that way,

right? They had two hits. Yeah. They had two freaking hits through like five innings. The offense, yet again, as the same as last night, just completely lifeless. And it was boring to watch and it was painful. And as Sean said, you know, we were morphing into Albert mode. D-backs are shit. Debacks are shit. They suck. The season's over. Fire everyone.

Exactly. And, and I mean, just what an incredible game. What an incredible microcosm of the entire season that we've witnessed up to this point. It just feels like every time you think this team is completely dead or that, you know, things are looking bad. That's when they have, you know, just a card that they haven't played yet. And Ryan Waldschmidt, you know, pinch hit. here's the two sides of this coin.

I want to sit here and be like, Tori Lavolo, King Midas. Tori Lavolo Masterclass. Pinch hitting Ryan Walsman at the perfect time. And I also kind of want to sit here and say, why the hell is Ryan Walshman not in the lineup over Max Kepler,

who's not playing well right now? When Ryan Walshman, all he does is make an impact in every game that he plays in. He's either making a diving grab that saves a run in the outfield, or he's throwing a guy out or, you know, he's hitting a ball over the fence for his second walk off of the year. But I'm tired of Ryan Walschman sitting on the bench, Derek. Ryan Walshman is a goddamn starter. All right.

Someone asked me to keep a button open. You're right, though, 100%. I mean, there's a number of reasons for this. But obviously, for those of you that may have missed it, just to catch you up, the Diamondbacks were down in this game, much like they were in yesterday's game where they lost seven to nothing. They were down four to nothing. And this was a pitcher's duel early on between Clay Holmes and Brandon Fott. And Brandon Fought hung in there, but unfortunately he could not stay as perfect as Clay Holmes was, who gave the Cubs essentially a perfect seven innings, seven innings today.

The Diamondbacks could not do anything, anything at all against Clay Holmes. They got two hits, zero runs, two walks, and struck out five times against Holmes. Meanwhile, Brandon Fott gave the Diamondbacks six and two thirds, but he did give up six hits and four. earned runs and the Diamondbacks did find themselves down four to nothing. And a game where, again, once again, their offense mustered up two hits through the first seven innings. But that changed in the eighth when the Diamondbacks were finally able to put up three runs. And to start things off, Damon, let's talk about the fact that you and I looked at each other

when the Diamondbacks were still down four to nothing. And I just made the joking comment that if they score one run, if they score one run right here, I will get up and go to the tarps off section and take my stupid shirt off. And then I said if they scum somehow, because I think there was an opportunity for Perdomo, perhaps to get a home run.

It was right before Perdomo, right? It was right before Perno. But if someone hit a home run, it would have been two runs. It would have been three nothing. Yeah. And then at that point, I told you I would run,

or not three nothing, but it would be four three. We'd be down by one run. I would run to the tarps off section. Well, Perdomo did exactly. that in the eighth inning. He singled on a line drive to PCA, who did nothing so far in this series. Lars Neubar scored, Moreno scored, and the Diamondbacks were down four to three. That is when

I peppered myself over to the tarps off section. One kind of frustrating fact of this is that after I left the All You Can Eat section, after I left our takeover, a tarps off section developed in our All You Can Eat section. So I didn't need to walk literally the entire side, the entire building over to the other side. And let me tell you, the boys are rowdy. I'm not going to, I think they might have been getting in Webb's head on the field. They were that loud, Derek. They were in the all you can eat section going Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim. We started a Talabunga chant in our section.

Really? Yeah, we had a good Talabunga section. Derek, they were simple Tim. Yeah. But they, it was constant. It was loud. and then when Ryan Walschmidt went up there, they were starting a Walshmidt, Walshmit,

and then when he hit it over the fence, you've just never seen a happier group of guys in the world. I cannot believe that we've done two takeovers, and you have taken your shirt off for both of them, and there have been two walk off home runs while your shirt was already taken off. And, and, yeah, like, why, Walsh is your place of work, Derek. It's like for the laughs, right? It's for this, it's for the, it's for the Graham, as the kids say.

It's for the socials, right? It's just more for fun. Both times I went over there for funzies, right? I don't know if this is funzies anymore. I'm starting to think that when I have a powerball ticket on my person, I should probably go ahead and pop this bad boy off and just give myself the best opportunity at winning millions and millions of dollars because it seems to somehow bring inexplicable good luck to this team.

And those of you that are commenting in the chat, you're absolutely right. This whole thing started with a very scary moment. And that's kind of where this game changed, to be honest. This Vargas flew out in the eighth inning and with one out, you had Jordan Lawler getting hit in the helmet in the face mask area by a pitch. He would exit the game and be replaced by Jorge Barrosa. And that sucked. It was good to at least see Lawler get up off the field and walk off under his own power. It was not good to see him lay there on the ground as long as he did. It was extremely scary. And the hope here is that obviously Jordan Lawler is fine. I'm sure they took him

out more as a precaution due to the, you know, hit to the helmet, but overall, a very scary moment. And then that was followed up by Lars Neupar walking. And then with two outs, Gabriel Moreno delivered with an RBI double that scored Jorge Barrosa. And then Pardomo comes through with an two RBI single that makes it a four three game. And then I'm hustling over to section what we like to call three oh fun at Chase Field. And once I got there, I arrived in time just to see Nolan Aronado lining out. And then we all, we started the aforementioned Tauabunga chant that got Tim Tawa to walk. He was replaced by Jose Fernandez. Then you had Vargas lining out.

He moves Fernandez over to second. Actually, I think Fernandez took second base on a steel, if I'm not mistaken. That was challenged. But he got himself in the scoring position. And then Ryan Walschman, the guy who told us that he hasn't had a walk off at any level, aside from when he maybe, maybe he was playing club ball. And as Damon pointed out, even if you had walkoff home runs when you were playing club ball, would you not remember that? Do you not know the exact date and time and where you were and who it was against?

Because I would mean everything to me. You know, me and my family would be talking about, remember when you hit that walkoff in that 14 U baseball tournament? It like, how do you not remember a walkoff? No. I don't know. But I guess that just goes to show what low level athletes, me and you are and what high level athletes guys like Ryan Wald. I don't know about that because my wife looked for my, my wife checked for my location tonight, Damon. And as I showed you by the picture she sent me, I was playing Sarah Field.

You should have posted that for my Twitter account because that just goes to show. They took me out for Ryan Walshman. No, but Walshman comes in as a pinch hitter. And of course, it's a home run. It's a home run. And I mean, moonshot. It was a magnificent home run. One of the most amazing things I'd ever seen, Damon.

this home run hung in the air so long that I looked at it, I saw it, I turned to our friend and die hard, and dear, dear takeover companion, Ryan Hanley. No one does a takeover better than Ryan Hanley. This man is the best human being on the planet, but you have the fact that Ryan Hanley looks at me and says to me, it's gone. Derek, it's gone. And I look over. The ball is still in the air.

It's still traveling. I thought when it got off his bat that it was going to be like a base hit is what I was thinking. I was thinking it was going to bang off the wall and we were going to get that tying run in. Little did I truly believe as I watched that ball hang in the air and fly out of Chase Field to the left field that it was really going to go for a home run, a walkoff home run, 102.6 miles per hour off the bat, 408 feet to left field. Damon, it was.

Derek, it was spiritual. It saved the season. It saved the season. Not only that, but Ryan Walschman now becomes the first Diamondbacks rookie in history. In history to hit a pinch hit walkoff home run. And he is also the first player in MLB history to hit two home runs for walkoffs after being down in the same calendar month. That's according to Opta stats. first rookie in MLB history.

We are all witness. That's pretty good. We are all witness. I mean, what a, what a boost those two wins in particular have been where you really felt like it was potentially over? And then Ryan Walshman walks up to the plate and, you know, it does something that even, you know, someone like myself who Derek was pounding the drum that I thought that Ryan Walshment could make a big impact for this team this season. Absolutely. given the opportunity even in spring training. That was our guy.

That was our guy. We were screaming that in spring training. And if, you know, like that being said, even I'm sitting there like, man, rookie up in this spot. That's tough. That's tough. We'll see what he can do. And he goes up there and he puts the ball over the damn fence.

It's just, it's, I mean, it's, it's like the makings of a superstar. I've, I've, and I'm not, he isn't a superstar, obviously, but he's had these flashes where he's been great. And he was. all right tonight. Brandon fought like that postseason run that he had in 23. That was not normal. That was not like an average pitcher going out there and just getting lucky. He was going out there and dominating some of the best lineups in baseball. And that showed me that his ceiling is incredibly high. I think that with Ryan Walshman, if you're going to make

splash plays like this, that tells me that you're, you know, a potential star type of player genuinely. And I mean, it's it's so exciting as a Diamondbacks fan as a rookie to see a guy making you know, those type of plays, not just at the plate, but he does it defensively. He's awesome, man. Ryan Walschmidt forever. I can't, I can't wait to watch the Ryan Waldschmidt, hopefully Jordan Lawler, if he can stop getting pitchers to throw at him every, you know, two games that he plays. That is not.

And then Corbyn Carroll Outfield, the, those guys for, you know, a long period of time, that sounds pretty good to me. It's special. It's special. And this, this was a special win in more ways than one. This is the Diamondback's 40th comeback win of the year, tying them with the Chicago Cubs for most comeback victories in MLB this season. Damn it, Damon, if that doesn't warrant sending Little Perdomo up Mount 500,

I simply don't know what does. Sorry, I'm still pumped. I'm still pumped. And I don't know how you couldn't be watching this team win this game. Again, I know every single game matters. I know every single win matters. This Cubs team is a difficult team. And by no means did the Diamondbacks have a good showing today against the Cubs?

But like Tori Lovolo said in the postgame show, and he was referencing Damon when he said this, this team is filled with dogs. This team is filled with dogs, something we've been trying to tell you about for years on this program. But they just don't quit. And that showed tonight. It was an incredible win. it means so much to their season. And now they have a chance to go for the victory in game three with Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound. And that is something that that is somebody who has given them a chance to win every time he's gone out there.

The Diamondbacks of 120 of Erod's 26 starts. But the conversation we need to have now, Damon, is one that you brought up and one that I think, especially considering the roster crunch that this team is currently going through and we'll go through now that time. Tommy Troy is set to return here soon. He started, he hit lead off tonight for the AAA Reno Aces, that Max Kepler's time in left field has to be coming to an end. Not only is it due to the lack of production, I think he's hitting below 2.15 now,

but you pulled him out of the game to pinch hit Ryan Waldschmidt for him. Obviously, that just goes to show that you believe in Waldy coming in in that spot or you like the matchup better or whatever, right? but Kepler is a free agent after this season, and Kepler is ineligible for postseason play. I know he can help. I know he's a body. I know he gives you that depth that you don't currently have.

But let's be real. There is no reason that this team should be giving it bats to guys that aren't going to be part of the potential postseason roster. I know we have to get there first, but I like our chances with Walt Schmidt and Tommy Troy out there in the outfield much more than I do, Max Kepler. and considering that those guys are the future of this team, those are the guys I want having high leverage at bats

in high leverage situations and becoming better, like getting their chance to grow as a major league player. And I don't need that for Max Kepler at this point. Again, and that's no offense to Max. He's done a tremendous job considering all that he's gone through this year. And he has helped the Diamondbacks win several baseball games that he has been a part of. He made an impact in a couple games. Right.

I'm not going to say he has not. done that. But I'm going to say that like as far as like what you said, I, I need to see Ryan Walsh Schmidt out there not only defensively because he had he did make a play. He does make plays that we saw Max Kepler kind of not make in the series so far. But he also is, you know, doing things like this for you and doing things that are historical in MLB, the first rookie to ever have two walkoffs in the same calendar month. This is a man that just, told us, like I said earlier, he never has even had a walk-off home run at any kind of professional level in his career, just when he was a young kid playing baseball. So he definitely

is acquiring those walk-off home runs now that he's a major leader. Yeah, just to clarify real quick, Max Kepler was not the one that Ryan Walschman pinch hit for. Max Kepler went over for tonight. And the only reason Ryan Walschman pinch hit, Derek, and I think that this is no, no, no, this is why people were upset in the chat about it was it was he only even played because jordan luller got hit in the head he came into pinch hit for barossa who was going up to the plate because they didn't want barossa up with the game on the line and and you know like i i don't even think that he would have been subbed out for max kepler had max kepler come up to the plate which that's concerning you know what i mean like that's i guess that kind of illustrates your point the point i made earlier you just can't have

Max Kepler eating into Ryan Waldschmidt's ABs when not only does it probably hurt you in the short term, it absolutely hurts you in the long term as well. So it's just got to be Ryan Waldschmidt from here on out for the most part. You're right. Max Cuppler's help

win you a couple games. That was kind of a long time ago, I feel like, at this point. I think maybe that time has passed. I agree with that. There's obviously ebbs and flows of a baseball season. You need guys to uplift you in certain moments and I you know appreciate him for his service for the team but I just I don't I don't think that necessarily moving forward with him is the move I think you know if Tommy Troy is going to you know be available to come back up that could be the end right like Tommy Troy come up play

play outfield a little bit but I also think that Ryan Walschman has earned more opportunities than maybe he's being given all the time so man I mean that's what an incredible job by Ryan Walshment and can I also just say real quick you know I know that it's not the biggest impact in the world because of how it ends up playing out. But Jose Fernandez comes in to pinch run in that game, steals that base. When everybody knows that he's trying to steal that base, swipes that bag, barely gets in there. That's how you got, that's a team that is doing their job properly. And I like I know it doesn't always end up in wins even.

Like if Ryan Walshman gets out, it's a loss. But Jose Fernandez gives you a chance to win with merely a single just by stealing that base. And I feel like he's just, he's made such an impact. impact too since he's gotten called back up. Right. Right. Trust these young guys, man, because I think that they've driven you most this season, and I think that they deserve it.

No, you're 100% right. The pressure put on Cubs pitcher Jacob Webb there in the ninth inning was applied by Jose Fernandez, right, by that, you know, by stealing that base. It's just something to distract, to discourage, to give that pitcher doubt in his own head. And he threw a bad pitch to Ryan Walschmidt. And Ryan Walshman did not miss hitting that one for a home run. It was incredible. It was an 84 mile per hour slider, Damon, that was basically right down the middle of the plate.

And Ryan Walshman. It's still up in the air, Derek. Yeah. Well, what's funny is it was the exact, almost identical pitch, almost identical to the first one thrown into a bat that he did not swing at and got a chance to see it. And honestly, when that happened, that's funny you mentioned that. When that happened, I was like, man, that was a pretty good pitch. Yeah, yeah. You're like, oh, 85 right in the middle.

Let's hit that one for a whole run. So it's, it ends up actually working out because he reads it obviously and then, you know, guesses the pitch correctly on that later part of the at-bat. I mean, it's incredible. And people want us to shout out Santana tonight. Dennis Santana. Come on. We haven't talked about him enough.

He definitely deserves the, uh, the, the praise tonight. Derek. Santana, you know, comes into the game. Not a lot of people had expectations. I had people tweeting at me being like, this game's still winnable and we're throwing Santana in the game right now. And then he goes out there and he gets, you know,

an inning in a third pitch, you know, he gets a strikeout. He, it just was easy. No, there was really nothing that came to pass. So I,

you know, shout out to Santana. Shout out to J. It went out there and I thought looked great. In four, in four outings for the Diamondback, Santana's only given up one earn run. And,

uh, it was in that five to 11 loss. to Cincinnati anyway, but he might be one of those guys. Again, they're not going to all work out. Mike He's in is pretty good about sifting through, you know, the dirt a little bit to find the diamonds in the rough. And sometimes they don't work out. Sometimes there's Zach Lattel, which had a good outing, his first outing for this team,

and then didn't after that. But Dennis Santana, who's already familiar with Jeremy Blyche due to their time in the Pittsburgh Pirates Organization together, is a guy that could add a tremendous amount of value. And so far, he's been pretty solid overall for this team. But I'll tell you, man, I just can't get over what we saw tonight. And I can't get over how big of a victory this is for this Diamondbacks team. 40 comeback victories this year.

40. It's insane. Again, tying the Chicago Cubs for the most in all of Major League Baseball. And that's the sign of a team I think they can win some games in the playoffs. I completely agree with that. your battle tested. You know what it's like to be in these not only comeback game wins, but one-run games. The dimebacks have been in a million one-run games. And, you know, this was just another example of that tonight. I also wanted to real quick before we moved completely off the topic,

Derek, J-Mart tonight, you know, some of these pitch velocities, can I just read them off for you? Please do. 102.2, 101.1, 101.8, 102.4, 102.6, 102.6, 102.2.6, 102. 202.5, 102.9, 103.3. I'm taking this back off. I'm taking it back off for J-Mart pitches. That's what I'm taking it back off for. I mean, J-Mart is so back. And there's another thing that makes me feel good about the Diamondbacks chances in a in a playoff series is a flame thrower who comes in and is like borderline untouchable. Yeah. Yeah. Like just give me Corbyn Burns back. Get this. Get me Catell back. Get me Corbyn Bairns back. Damn it.

I got two asks, two. It's not that hard. It's not that much. But speaking of Catell, Damon, there is, there are only two other players in all of MLB that have two walkoff home runs this season. Catell Marte is one of them. Wow. Ryan Walshman's one of them. And then Colton Couser for the Baltimore Orioles is the other.

The milkman. The milkman. As we've long called them on the show. He gets that one. He can have that one back because our milkman doesn't deserve it. We've long said. He's the real milk man on this pod. The debacks also have eight walkoffs this season,

which are the fifth most in major in major league behind the Cubs who have had a ton. They have 13 walkoffs. The Mariners and the white socks who have 11 each and then the Padres have nine. But speaking of those ringless bums from San Diego, they lost, Damon. The Phillies lost two in a row to the Seattle Mariners. Shout out to Shane for his club doing the thing. Some of us believe Derek,

believe it or not i mean some of us some of us put placed money on the uh mariner's pirates diamondbacks parley that would be one maybe one guy in this room and not a guy that's currently half naked so you guys could figure out the math i looked at derrick at one point during the game and i said oh he was so over it was it was zero zero Padres pirates in the eighth inning and and the phillies were down one run to the mariners and i looked at derrick and i said i said i cannot believe that I thought that the Diamondbacks would win and the two teams we needed to lose would actually lose.

What an idiot I am. And then it ends up working exactly in the way that I wanted it to. Speaking of things working in the way we want them to, let's look at these wild card standings because your Arizona Diamondbacks that three days ago looked like their season was over, maybe one day ago looked like their season was over,

is just one game back from a wildcard spot. You got the Phillies going, losing two. they are two games up on us, or at least they're two games up on the Padres. We are one game back from the Padres. So this still isn't great. We still don't have a wild card spot. But like I said, two losses in a row from both the Phillies and the Padres is massive. And look below us too, because we can't say enough about the fact that the Marlins have lost two in a row and the Cardinals have lost four.

They're now four and five games back. The pirates have drifted off to six and a half back. And then everybody else is a bunch of losers that aren't going to catch up. But those three teams, the Marlins, the Cardinals and pirates, at least have faded enough that we can concentrate more on the teams that are ahead of us and putting all of our shirtless magic onto them losing. All of our hatred. All of our hatred, everything that we can get to, right? All of our anger. Man, 70 wins. The Diamondbacks now sit, you know, 11 wins away from certifying that they would have a 500 season.

And that doesn't seem that out of the question. Not to mention the fact that they do have three games. left against the Phillies as I've been talking about and three games left against the Padres before this season is up. So they do have a chance to make up ground themselves and catch these teams. However, their offense needs to get, they need to get their identity figured out. Their offense really needs to put stuff together. Five runs tonight in the eighth and ninth inning is great, especially against the Cubs bullpen that was, that is one of their strengths overall, right? But I will say that they can't keep going out there and expecting to get it done late like this,

and they can't go out there and keep putting up zero runs for six to seven innings, obviously. I feel like everything I'm saying goes without saying. But still, their offense needs to figure some stuff out because as we've discussed, they currently still only have three starting pitchers in their rotation. This is how we're going to win a championship, though, right here. This is the playoffs, dashes, tarps off. we're doing our part

We might, in fact, have to do 81 takeovers in 2027 if there's that many home games. Yeah, I mean. Is there any question about it?

It's going to be what the people eventually start asking for. Not only that, but Derek, you have to take your shirt off and post about it on social media.
