Starting point is 00:00:01 Well, I inexplicably haven't given up hope. The Arizona Diamondbacks win this game against the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of one to nothing in 11 innings, and it truly was the battle of two terrible offenses. We have more on this game and Mike Hazen's comments about who he would trade, which some people feel like it's everyone. Don't you go anywhere? We're starting in 30 seconds. Ski and welcome in to Studio K, right here at PHNX, H&X, H.
Starting point is 00:00:43 presented by our friends at Circle K. This is the PHNX Diamondback show. My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of this joint. Glad to have you guys here and glad for this game to finally be over. I thought the year was, in fact, going to be 2027, and the Diamondbacks and Pirates were still going to be engaged in a scoreless extra innings game.
Starting point is 00:01:04 But alas, Corbyn Carroll is fast. He scores the winning run for the Diamondbacks in the 11th, and they managed to take this game, which really was a battle of two terrible odds. offenses. Welcome in, guys. Thanks for being here. Glad to have you here. This show, as always, is brought to you by our friends at Bet365 and Game Time. Go use that code of PHNX 365. When you sign up over at Bet 365, you'll get yourself $150 in bonus bets over at game time. Use our code of PHNX, and you'll get yourself $20 off your first purchase. And of course, use it to baseball games like
Starting point is 00:01:37 this one that hopefully you just never know when a baseball game is going to end. And this one very much seemed like it was going to be that case. It was going to be basically which team blinked first, and it was the battle of two terrible offenses. Luckily, the Diamondbacks found a way to win when they really need it, honestly. Like, I think the team probably needs this. We saw them come out today, and I don't think they played a bad game, but offensively, once again, for the fourth game in a row.
Starting point is 00:02:04 They just look listless at the plate. It didn't really feel like there was much going on. I was going to tweet out before the game predicting this exact thing. I knew that this was like the, this, this was destined to be exactly this. You had the Diamondbacks whose offense has not been very good lately going up against one of the best pitching staffs in baseball. Meanwhile, the pirates couldn't be any worse offensively this season. They are basically last in every offensive statistical category. So this was just an absolute opportunity to see these two.
Starting point is 00:02:40 offenses shine against each other today. But the Diamondbacks, like I said, managed to finally get the win in the 11th inning. And it was, there wasn't much offense from this team today. But it was Cotel Marte's 1,000th game as an Arizona Diamondback. And that's pretty good. Calvin here in the chat, I think summarizes my feelings on it. He said, terrible game, but glad they won. I had it all set to come in here and talk today about Cotel in his 1,000th game,
Starting point is 00:03:09 just going out there and raking. Of course, that didn't happen. Kattel was 0 for two today. But he did have three walks, so he did get on base plenty. And there is lots of talk based on the media availability that we had with Mike Haysen this morning about Ketel Marte, possibly being the subject of trades. And I just want to say that I feel like this became a little bit of the telephone game. Things got misconstrued. And we will have audio from the man himself, from Mike Hazen here.
Starting point is 00:03:39 at the end of the show, letting you know exactly what he said about the position players and taking phone calls on them. Ketel Marte was not singled out, nor is Ketel Marte being traded by the Diamondbacks. And I might be just spoiling segment four, but I don't give a damn because I want to make sure everybody knows that we just need to stop talking about this. We need to stop talking about Ketel Marte being traded, especially on the day where he played his 1,000th, or 1,000th game as a deback. He becomes the third Diamondback all time to reach. the feat joining one Paul Goldschmidt and one Luis Gonzalez. And I think we can determine who at this point probably deserves that fourth spot on
Starting point is 00:04:18 the Mount Rushmore of Arizona Diamondbacks. I'd feel like it would be those two guys along with Randy Johnson and Cattell. But you could make a case. There's a case for some other players to be named in there. Brandon Webb. I know some people would want to put Kurt Schilling on there, though I would never want to see his face that large on the side of a mountain. Could you imagine looking at that big of a Kurt Schilling?
Starting point is 00:04:38 it'd be awful. But anyway, this game, not a lot to talk about in this game. Offensibly, the Diamondbacks again, were held to just five hits total in this one. Corbyn Carroll was one for five today with a very important run scored. Luis, excuse me, Lortes, Gouriel Jr. was two for four today. He also had a pretty, I don't know if you want to call it a pretty amazing game-saving catch, Ayrton. We got our guy Ayrton, by the way, the freckled Mamba on the ones and twos today. And I don't know if you would call it a game saving catch as much as it was a base running error on the pirates. I had a chance to see the pirates.
Starting point is 00:05:14 I think we all did in this game up close and personal and could see what a catastrophe they are offensively. It felt there in extra innings when they had that runner at third base, like they very much had a chance to score on Guriel making that catch had had the runner just tagged up. Instead, Lordis makes a kind of a tumbling catch, gets the throw in, and then the They managed to keep that runner at third, and they managed to get out of the inning without a run scoring.
Starting point is 00:05:43 I think that was the bottom of the 10th inning for the pirates. It felt like that was destined to be a walk-off. I even made poor Harriton change our thumbnail to like walk off the plank or something funny like that with pirate references. But no, no, the pirates blew it. And again, I don't know if the Diamondbacks won this game as much as the pirates just kind of gave it away to the debacks. At this point, though, they need it.
Starting point is 00:06:07 And it was a nice gift for, Toy LaVolo because today is Tori LaBolo's 60th birthday. And I just cannot believe Killarex is not in the chat right now. I was so waiting for Killer Rex to be here. As the other Toriators here, I was just wondering because I know that they were going to lose their minds if I talked about this. But it is Tori's birthday. I do want to say being a Tori shill and a Diamondback shill and whatever else they want
Starting point is 00:06:32 to call me. But happy birthday to one Tori LaVolo. Are you going to sing him happy birthday? I'm absolutely not going to sing him happy birthday. Ayrton, but what I am going to do is say, once again, what a great dude I think Tori is. I don't know how much longer he is necessarily going to be manager of the Diamondbacks, though I don't think his jobs actually in jeopardy. I say that in jest.
Starting point is 00:06:51 I think that there's a lot of people out there that see it, the way that I see it, the way that we see it around here of it being a bit more of a factor of circumstances. But if you want to blame Tori and say he's a bad manager and say he should have been fired last season after taking this team to the World Series in 2020. I don't think there's an argument I can make that will change your mind. However, Tori is a great dude. He's a great dude, and he's one of my favorite people I've had a chance to cover in sports. So I give a shout out to Tori on his 60th birthday, and the Diamondbacks again got him a present.
Starting point is 00:07:24 Or maybe the Pirates gave him a present. I don't know which way you want to say it. But Tori Lavello, now the Diamondbacks have won their last three games on his birthday. Today they won one to nothing over the pirates. In 2023, they won three to one over the Cardinals, and in 2022, they won seven to nothing over the Giants. So apparently, there is very much a recipe for success on Tori's birthday. But he also shares a birthday with Barry Bonds.
Starting point is 00:07:55 I don't know why that's so interesting to me, other than obviously one of those guys is a much better baseball player than the other one. But Diamondbacks again had another terrible night offensively, fourth in a row, but they did just enough to get the job done. A couple of other notable standouts. Jake McCarthy was one for four in this game. And I think the one I really want to talk about is Geraldo Perdomo was 0 for four today, hitting in the three hole.
Starting point is 00:08:23 And I need to get Geraldo. I need to rescue Geraldo Perdomo out of the three hole. He is not good in the three hole. In fact, I had here that he was batting 192 hitting third, but that was without an extra at bat that he got out. So he's actually 0 for 4. I had him just 0 for 3. So 14 for 74 this season hitting in the 3-0.
Starting point is 00:08:47 And again, comparatively to the rest of his stats, Geraldo Pardomo is one of, if not the best hitter in baseball since the All-Star break. I know it's not a large sample size, but Pardomo has reached safely now in all seven games since the All-Stermo. star break with hits in five of them. He's hitting 481 with two doubles, a triple, seven RBI, two walks, and two stolen bases. So it's not a matter of perdomo not being here. It is a matter of maybe not putting him there in the three hole. But defensively, once again, the Diamondbacks in this game held the pirates to just one hit. And again, it makes it that much more
Starting point is 00:09:28 frustrating that this game lasted as long as it did. But again, we got Diamondbacks here winning Lordus Guriel, by the way. That might have been the fight of the day. Lordus Guriel against the sun there in the early innings was definitely the biggest battle of this one. There's a couple of things. I think Jose Herrera looked like he might have suffered a little bit of an injury, though he did come back out.
Starting point is 00:09:54 However, he was eventually removed from the game. And, you know, again, I know that there's a lot of people that would rather see James McCann, other guys in there. Just hope Jose Herrera is okay, considering how limited the Diamondbacks actually are. They do have Adrian Del Castillo available on the roster as well, but I don't know if they're comfortable putting him back there to catch. If you might remember, ADC was fine behind the plate, aside from being an absolute liability with runners on the base path and throwing guys out. It didn't seem like he was able to really do that at a major league level. And it seemed to be one of his biggest shortcomings as far as a catcher is concerned. So again, though, the Diamondbacks had Tristan English called up today in regards to, or I guess in relation to Josh Naylor being traded to the Seattle Mariners.
Starting point is 00:10:44 We did an emergency podcast on that, but obviously it's not something we got a chance to talk about here. It's pretty crazy that this happened. Josh Naylor hitting cleanup tonight for the. Mariners. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks were able to bring back Tristan English, who had not actually cleared the amount of time that a send down has to stay in the minors before being called up. But due to a clause based on this exact situation where based on roster needs, it can be called up as an emergency. And the Diamondbacks did that with Tristan English. He was 0 for 3 tonight with two strikeouts, didn't have a great offensive night. But hopefully he can kind of, you know,
Starting point is 00:11:22 blossom into that role a little bit. The Diamondbacks right now don't have a ton of options, especially with Payv and Smith, still being injured in regards to what they're going to do at first base. So English will get the majority, I imagine the majority of the starts over there for a bit for a while. Talked about it on the emergency podcast yesterday, but Stefan Carey was very high when we spoke, I believe it was last Friday about Tristan English. At the time, he was a bit disappointed that he had gotten sent down. So here he is getting another opportunity with the job. nailer trade and you know the nailer trade again is is something that in reacting to it I still don't think that it was a terrible trade I don't think the diamondbacks got fleeced I think you
Starting point is 00:12:03 could look at what they gave up to the guardians potentially to get nailer and then compare that to what now they're getting in trade for nailer and maybe think that they didn't get all the value that they should have maybe gotten however I do think that those pieces that the diamondbacks received in return. Do absolutely feel the need that they were looking to fill, and I will have more here from Mike Hazen here on that as well later in the show. But right now I did want to talk, obviously, about the biggest battle of this game. It wasn't the extra innings battle.
Starting point is 00:12:38 It wasn't Lordes Gurriel Jr. versus the sun. It was the battle of the uniforms in this game. And quite frankly, even though the Diamondbacks won the game, they got bodied in the uniform battle tonight. I have never seen such an atrocious combination as what the Diamondbacks were wearing tonight. You guys know I'm a big fashion guy.
Starting point is 00:13:01 You know how all the stupid pattern shirts that I wear all the time. And this really bothered me. The Diamondbacks went out there tonight on a Hall of Fame weekend, right, wearing their Cooperstown caps, which happened to be the old school Purple A. And that's something that we all like.
Starting point is 00:13:18 I think everybody can universally agree on. That's one of one of the beloved hats in not only Diamondbacks history, but kind of Valley history, right? Like it's the hat that I was wearing that Westside Gunn saw me wearing at a wrestling show and immediately needed to know what it was and then went out and bought it the next day and performed at his concert wearing it. That's how hot that hat is, right? The purple, the gold trim, everything about it. It's great. I have nothing bad to say about that hat, but you are going to pair it with the Diamondbacks current gray uniforms. Like we're not, like we're not even trying anymore, right?
Starting point is 00:13:52 Like, we're far beyond being divorced dads out at the bar. We're just at the supermarket wearing mismatched flip-flops and cargo shorts and whatever the hell else we could find to make it to the store. Is this how much we've given up? Is this what the trade deadline is done to us? We're not even going to match our caps with our uniforms. Meanwhile, meanwhile, the Pittsburgh pirates are looking at us across the field wearing their black on black with the pillbox caps looking way better than
Starting point is 00:14:24 they deserve to look, absolutely, way better than their offense deserves to look, way better than their record indicates they are. But I was furious about this. I don't know why. I felt like it was like, to me, it struck me as like the Diamondbacks didn't know that they had to wear the purple hats for this game. And it was like a last minute thing being thrown in there. And yes, piece of Yoshi, the cobra patch was fire.
Starting point is 00:14:47 everything was fire about it. And I don't want to say that about the pirates because, again, they don't deserve it. They didn't deserve to look as hot as they did tonight. But, oh, man, I mean, it's Cooperstown weekend. Could we not break out an old Diamondbacks uniform, right? Even the gray road pinstripe vests with the shirt underneath, with Arizona across the front, we would have lost our minds for that. We would lost our minds.
Starting point is 00:15:12 And then you could put it back in the team shop and just print money. Do you not like printing money for merchandise? I don't ever. I don't get it. I don't get it. But what I do get is that Ryan Nelson is a very good pitcher. And in fact, he might be the Diamondbacks best pitcher once again this season, as he was last summer. We're going to talk about how good Nelly was in this game on the other side of this break. Don't you go anywhere. You're watching the PH and X Diamondback show. Well, when are we just going to start talking about Ryan Nelson being the best pitcher in the Diamondback starting rotation? When does Nellie truly get his flowers? This is a man that was booted from the starting rotation simply based on the fact that they hired yet another high-priced pitching arm. And yet, meanwhile, Nellie has another quality start for the Arizona Diamondbacks with one hit allowed in this game. Now, yes, I know, I know, I watched it with my eyes that the pirates are terrible in every statistic. offensive category, but this is still an achievement.
Starting point is 00:18:47 Nonetheless, the only hit allowed it once again was to Tommy fam. And Ryan Nelson, again, he's not going to surprise you with what he does. And I think, in my opinion, that is the most surprising thing that Nelly does. Nelson does not go out there and really try to be anything other than he is, which is he is a fastball pitcher. His breaking stuff has gotten better, but he doesn't even need to use it. He just needs to use it enough to catch batters off guard. But tonight, his fastball maxed out at 97.5 miles per hour.
Starting point is 00:19:25 It averaged 95.1. This year, it's average 95.5. And he used it 61% of the outing. And he allowed one hit. I can't even imagine how good Nelson would be if one of his other. And this is no disrespect. He still used his slider, 17. percent of the time. He used his cutter, 11 percent, through the curve ball eight times for
Starting point is 00:19:47 nine percent of the outing and through the change up one single time. But like if he had another pitch, if he had a secondary pitch that truly was as good as his fastball, Ryan Nelson might potentially be one of the best pitchers in all the Major League Baseball. And quite frankly, he is the best pitcher on the Diamondbacks. He got five whiffs on his fastball the night, two whiffs on the slider. He didn't get a lot of strikeouts. He didn't let it get a lot of swing a miss. He did get 27 swings on his forcing fastball. So he got a lot of swings. And he threw this fastball a lot. And as you can see, he kept it high in the zone. That was the key. You don't, you, maybe see three, four, maybe fastballs there that are below the belt, maybe five. Outside of that,
Starting point is 00:20:34 every single one of those fast balls are high. They're up in the zone. They're out of the zone. But that's the key to Nellie's successes. He just keeps his fastball up. And tonight, he minimalized the damage. He really did. And again, this is a bad Pirates team. So I'm not going to go out there and, you know, beat the drum too much for Ryan Nelson this season. But overall, when asked to pitch out of the bullpen, Ryan Nelson came out and he pitched out of the bullpen and was excellent. When Ryan Nelson was asked to go back into the starting rotation, Ryan Nelson does nothing but give quality starts.
Starting point is 00:21:09 And I mean, honestly, there was a stretch there where he was so close. Five and two-thirds against Toronto, one-earned run. Five innings allowed, one-er-and-run run. Giant, six-and-thirds, two-urn runs. Royals, seven-innings pitched, one-er-run run. St. Louis, last outing out, six-innings, one-er-n-run, outing, zero-run-round. Ryan Nelson, in his last two outings, has 12-innings pitch, five hits allowed, one-er-run, three walks, and eight strikeouts for his 0.75 ERA. In the month of July, he has 23 innings pitched, six earned runs allowed, four of those in one game for a 2.35 ERA in four starts. Ryan Nelson is the ace of this staff, and I'm okay with saying that. And I think that that's the one thing that should be very exciting about the future of this team. While the Diamondbacks have desperately been looking for a starting pitcher to be a part of this rotation alongside guys like Brandon fought and other young pitchers, it's like they've had him here the whole time. Right. So that there's a lot of satisfaction. I think a lot of relief
Starting point is 00:22:15 knowing that there there shouldn't be any more discussion about whether or not Nelson belongs in the starting rotation. And that going forward next season, the Diamondbacks do have two starting rotation spots to fill. They do have two guys coming off the books. They can go out and free agency and pursue those arms. I don't know what they would do in in regards to calling guys up. But they also have a lot of assets here to potentially trade. and we'll see if the Diamondbacks, you know, get anything back. I mean, again, Mike Hazen has more comments on the difficulty, really, of trying to trade for major league ready talent,
Starting point is 00:22:49 especially when you're giving up guys that are on expired contracts. The Diamondbacks aren't really trying to get guys on expired contracts back. They're not looking for rentals for 2025, and that makes this process of trying to trade for Major League Ready talent all the more difficult when it comes to the Diamondbacks. They really do have to try to take advantage. of a desperate team that wants to add. And again, when you talk about the haul
Starting point is 00:23:14 that the Diamondbacks are looking for, Mark Feinson sent that tweet out the other day that the Diamondbacks are not going to let someone like A Heu Anios-Wares go for nothing. They are going to, in fact, look for the return that the guy that is currently in the race for the most home runs in the National League deserves, you know, or the team deserves to get in return for that.
Starting point is 00:23:35 But again, with Ryan Nelson tonight, just a steady diet of fastball. did the trick with just enough off-speed stuff. He goes six innings, gives up the one hit, zero earn runs, two walks tonight, 4K, and yeah, let's throw up again, it's not sexy. It's not, it might not be worth the seawater and the actual environmental assets that it takes to put up the circle case strikeout meter. But we're going to throw it up there anyway, and there it goes, four strikeouts.
Starting point is 00:24:02 We use a lot of energy around here. Most of it's for the lights, but the majority of it, over 50% of our energy costs don't come from the air conditioning and come from the strikeout meter but uh bullpen tonight pretty damn good for the diamond backs and again i i have to preface every single thing with this is the pirates right but uh guys like jake woodford and anthony descalfini you know they they might not be perfect they might not be who they you want to see in there all the time woodford might have you know blown that game the other day but man uh disco inferno tonight disco was really good for this team and the fact that Tori Lovolo has a long reliever that he can send out there,
Starting point is 00:24:40 give the Diamondbacks, four innings, two walks, three strikeouts, no runs allowed. It's pretty damn good. That's nearly a start. And especially in a game like this where it goes into extra innings, it was crucial, right? The Diamondbacks are going on a nine-game road trip. They have a lot of changes happening. They don't know if they have no idea. Like Tori Lovolo, the bullpen, the pitching coach, Brian Kaplan,
Starting point is 00:25:02 nobody knows what moves are going to be made by Mike Hayeson. So they have no idea if they're going to get some additional help there for the bullpen. They don't know if they're going to be swapping guys out. All they can plan for is that they have nine games ahead of them on the road that they need to successfully get through. And the fact that Disco could go out there today and give you four innings strong in a game like this means a lot to the bullpen. Meanwhile, Kevin Ginkle goes out there, holds that ghost runner on in the 11th inning. He has one inning of work, no hits allowed, no runs. And the Diamondbacks get out of this one with a one-nothing win.
Starting point is 00:25:35 thanks to Corbyn Carroll and his legs because the Diamondbacks there in the 11th inning got the job done. And it's like you could almost feel it knowing that Corbyn Carroll was the ghost runner. Because Corbyn Carroll, much like O'Neill Cruz, who got on base and became a problem for the Diamondbacks there, he is a guy that really is a game changer. And man, in the 11th inning, that's exactly what he did. He was able to finally, you know, make, make a couple of, a couple of advancements there. And it was enough for him to come in and score the only run scored in this game. And again, it's just amazing what Corbyn Carroll can do with his legs and how important he is.
Starting point is 00:26:20 It starts off with a fly out to center field that allows Corbyn by Heraldo Podomo, of course, to get Corbyn Carol the third. And then Gino Suarez on a sack fly to right field scores Corby and Carroll, giving him. the Diamondbacks the win in this game. And honestly, I don't, I don't, I still feel like this was a game that the Pirate should have won. I felt like they had an opportunity to, and we just saw them make mistakes offensively. So, you know, that there was nothing that at the end of the day that the Diamondbacks really did to win this game other than not making a ton of defensive mistakes and having a
Starting point is 00:26:56 great outing out there by Ryan Nelson. And Ryan Nelson, of course, is our Kingsnake because nobody else deserved it. and Ryan Nelson was awesome. Six innings pitch today, one hit, zero earned runs, and 4K. So big win here for the Diamondbacks, not against a big opponent, not against a meaningful team, just a chance to win a game, get a little confidence in themselves,
Starting point is 00:27:22 and try to turn things around. We all hate the idea of what's going to happen here at the trade deadline, and we don't know the extent of it. Now there are rumors coming out, that the Diamondbacks could potentially move as many as five to six players. That would either be every single player on an expiring contract, including Jalen Beaks and Shelby Miller, or you start moving into either prospects or even players that are under team control
Starting point is 00:27:49 beyond the end of this season. Now, I don't know if they really have the assets or the depth to really do that, nor do I really believe that the Diamondbacks at the end of the day at the end of the day, are going to trade five to six players from their major league roster away. I don't think that that's going to be the case. But what the Diamondbacks really have is still a chance to make anything happen. And I know this is all, this is going to get very, this is going to get very hopeful and weird. And a lot of you are going to hate it.
Starting point is 00:28:19 But we just talk about this trade deadline as if it's the end of the season, as if the Diamondbacks don't win this many games by the trade deadline. it means it's the end of their season. And as you'll hear here in a moment, Mike Hazen was very indecisive still as to what they're going to do about this team. And I think a lot of us can understand why. I think you can understand why that they still have hope,
Starting point is 00:28:43 why when this team has the second highest OPS and all of baseball, you think that they could still get it done if they could get some solid pitching, some consistent pitching, not even like go out and get consistent pitching. Get it from guys. who are here on this team that you know
Starting point is 00:28:59 can give you consistent pitching. If you can get that out of those guys, then things could turn around for this team. I can't believe where we currently sit. And we're going to talk about that on the other side of this break, but the Diamondbacks, by no stretch of the imagination, are out of it.
Starting point is 00:29:17 And honestly, one single week could completely change the season for this team. It would require a lot of other things to happen, including a lot of other teams to have a bad week. But literally one bad week for three or four other teams and one really good week for the Diamondbacks could change their entire season. So I understand why it's confusing.
Starting point is 00:29:38 And I understand why Mike Hazen still is indecisive about what he's going to do. But games like this, even though it's a one-nothing in game against a team you should absolutely beat and it happened to have, it had to take 11 innings in order to get it done, I'm still of the belief that this win is important and again that every win from this point through July 31st is important for the Diamondbacks and for Mike Hazen. They were basically the team
Starting point is 00:30:06 that kind of kicked off the trade deadline shenanigans. Now today we have word that the Yankees have traded the Colorado Rockies for Ryan McMahon, third baseman, which means most likely the Yankees now are completely out on the Gino Suarez sweepstakes. Now that's one team down, 11 more to go, and with the Diamondbacks already parting ways with Josh Naylor,
Starting point is 00:30:28 perhaps that makes Gino Svarez that much more likely to stay here in a Diamondback's uniform. And I think that's something that we can all agree on. We need we want. You all want to see the beard turned teal, don't you? Well, it's only happening if Gino stays here. I'm going to tell you that right now. So call your local baseball GM and make sure you make that happen. But we are going to talk about the numbers from this game,
Starting point is 00:30:49 and we are going to take a look at where the Diamondbacks sit in the standings on the other side of this break. Don't you go anywhere you're watching the P.H. to next diamond back show. Well, I'm kind of sick of seeing Espo's all pro shade concept shades, but it's pure jealousy. I won't lie. It has nothing to do with me not liking Espo or me wanting to be in more ads because, as you've seen, I'm on gas station pumps around the valley.
Starting point is 00:31:14 This is about the fact that his extended outdoor living space, or at least his roll-down patio shades that he has in his house that help keep his home 20 degrees cooler and block out 95% of those harmful UV rays look so cool in the video. that he posts and makes me want to go out there and get them. So make sure you check out Espo's video and then give our friends at all pro shade concepts a call. They can give you a free estimate and then they can let you know all that they can do. They don't do just the roll-down patio shades. They do motorized awnings that can extend your outdoor living space. They have hundreds of designs and colors to choose from. They can match your HOA to ensure it's compliant. And they can
Starting point is 00:31:49 add all sorts of extras, including remote controls, LED lights to extend your space at night and so much more. They can also replace and fix most older outdated patio shades and motorized awnings, and they've been in business right here in the valley for 20 years. So give them a call at 623204-1476 or visit all pro-shadeconcepts.com right now to schedule your free estimate. And of course, if you're looking for a place to just get away from the heat for a weekend, Heila River Resorts and casinos is your spot. They have over 4,500 slots and live table games. We can catch all the action in any of their sports books. Their bet MGM sports book at Healer Riversorts and Casinos is amazing. And most importantly, you do you at HealaRiver Resorts and Casinos. Visit play athella.com for more. details. All right. Well, the Diamondbacks again win a game that we had no idea what this game
Starting point is 00:33:04 was even going to be. Poor Erriton had to deal with me being me during a game like this, which was mostly me just pacing and angrily demanding that something happened so I can understand what even is this game, what direction is it going? And I hate it. I hate games like this. But I do love that the Diamondbacks won. And I do love that we always got our friends at Desert Financial Credit Union to get our back with our numbers. Let's take a look at the numbers from this game. The Diamondbacks outscore the Pirates by a ton. Just kidding. It's one to nothing game. Diamondbacks out hit the Pirates. Five hits to one hit. This stat. Absurd. O for nine. Both teams. O for nine. I don't even understand it. How does the Pirates team that has one hit go O for nine? That's a lot of walks.
Starting point is 00:33:52 But still, nonetheless, O for nine on both sides. Diamondbacks had no extra base hits. The Pirates had one. the Tommy fam triple and man I did not have a chance to really discuss how much I miss Tommy fam but I really miss Tommy fam he looks great out there still playing baseball and then even the expected batting average was against both of these teams 176 for the diamondbacks 155 for the pirates yeah whatever a baseball a baseball game was played I guess in in Pittsburgh that's what they say but again a very important win for the diamond backs and the reason why is because a lot of other teams have lost and one of those teams that has lost that also has Tommy fam in common with us Candace is the one the only San Diego Padres they have now lost four games in a row and are reeling
Starting point is 00:34:40 and that is good for the Diamondbacks because the Padres still hold one of those wildcard spots and somehow some way even with getting swept by team they just got swept by there in the Astros diamondbacks figured out a way to to they're still Still are still, still in the wildcard hunt. Even with trading away Josh Naylor, they're still in the wildcard hunt. And I imagine that this team is going to confound us more as this season goes on. And I would totally be okay with that. I just need them to hang in there and play some good baseball.
Starting point is 00:35:11 Let's take a look at the drunken orgy of violence that we call the Anheel West. Dodgers finally won their 60th game. They sit at 60 and 43 atop the division. The Padres, again, who have lost four in a row are sitting at 55 and 49. They are five and a half back in the division. And the Dodgers are fairly lucky that the Padres slid when they did because, man, they would be hot on their heels in the division had they not lost four in a row. The Giants now sit at 54 and 49, just one win back from the Padres. They are six games back in the division and just a half a game back from the Padres there and the wildcard hunt.
Starting point is 00:35:47 Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks still have around 500 here, two games under at 51 and 53. they are nine and a half games back in the division that doesn't matter. But my God, I don't even understand how they are four games back in the wild card. The ebbs and flows of baseball, it's just like this game. This game was flying along. We thought we were going to get out of here while there was still daylight outside. Ha! Not as far as baseball is concerned.
Starting point is 00:36:15 It was like the eighth inning in like an hour and a half. The next thing you know it's a three-hour baseball game. But still nonetheless, the Diamondbacks really do. have to win a lot of baseball games here. And with them being four back in the wild card, it's going to be hard to make up some ground. However, should they do that? How can you go out there as the GM of this baseball team
Starting point is 00:36:38 and start to dismantle it when you're merely three games back in the wildcard hunt, maybe two games back? If you're that close, I don't know how Mike Hazen could possibly do that. I really don't. And I'm not saying this in a judgmental way. because I still think that it is perhaps detrimental to the future of this franchise to not make some trade moves right now with the assets that you have, the value that those assets are,
Starting point is 00:37:05 and the fact that they're all on expiring contracts with the likelihood that the Diamondbacks don't make the playoffs and don't end up resigning these guys in the off season. However, the qualifying offer and the draft picks, the compensatory draft picks, the Diamondbacks could get in return. really do offer Mike Hazen, as Nick Bacoro put it today, a safety net in regards to this situation and the fact that the Diamondbacks can go out there and potentially still get something for these guys at the end of the year. They're not going to walk away for nothing, you know, but as we've discussed, you have the weird situation with Zach Gallen. And if you don't trade Galen, what do you do in regards to offering him a qualifying offer?
Starting point is 00:37:52 and what if Gallen chooses to accept it. Now with the situation the Diamondbacks are in, once again, I don't think that's the worst situation. I don't think bringing Gallen back for one year with the needs for the starting rotation in 2026 is the worst idea. But at the same time, you know, it's probably more of a thing that you're offering
Starting point is 00:38:13 so that he turns it down so that you get the draft big. So it's going to be really interesting to see the moves that are made by Mike Hazen and this front office here going forward. Right now, as I've said over the last couple of days, the Diamondbacks seem to be the focus of the baseball world in regards to their trades and what they're going to do. Moving Josh Naylor in regards to the other four guys, or the other three guys at least that are the ones
Starting point is 00:38:40 mostly focusing on here, seems to be the one that made the most sense. When you look at the pieces that the Diamondbacks have and what they're able to do without Naylor, you really do feel like the Diamondbacks can can fill that role. Now, it sucks to lose Josh Naylor. I personally was a huge fan of Josh Naylor. I loved how weird Josh Naylor was.
Starting point is 00:39:04 A lot of people might not have liked that, and that might have even come across to some fans that he didn't enjoy his time here. But Josh Naylor, and I don't even know if weird is the right word. There's other guys that I would call weird. Archie is weird in the best possible way. But Naylor was just, unique, a very unique individual.
Starting point is 00:39:22 And I really, really enjoyed for the brief amount of time that we had him here, covering him in the clubhouse, mostly because of the time Naylor would take to tell you not only about his own personal life and his upbringing, but also about baseball. And he had a great way of explaining things. And also, I feel like the patience to explain some of this stuff to those of us, tubby guys asking him questions that haven't lifted a bat in a very long time
Starting point is 00:39:53 and don't really understand things about the game and how they work, that's welcomed. And it was cool. Not to mention he had the greatest hockey jersey collection that I've ever seen in my whole entire life. And I still want one of those Diamondbacks hockey jerseys with his name on it, even though he's not here anymore. But Josh Naylor is going to go help the Mariners.
Starting point is 00:40:13 And for some reason, the Mariners and the Diamondbacks continue to have this relationship where they trade players and that these, I guess these transactions are something that are happening regularly between these two teams. And they might continue to happen because a lot of the rumors do still have Gino Suarez being connected to the Seattle Mariners and going back to them through this trade with the Diamondbacks. But we have no idea if that's going to happen. And we have a lot more here from Mike Hazen on what exactly this situation or how it is to run through. this. But before we did that, I just wanted to let you guys know. Tomorrow is our pickleball
Starting point is 00:40:53 tournament out there at Chicken and Pickle. If you haven't had a chance to sign up or if you're still interested, I know last minute, right? Like sometimes this stuff happens last minute. I've talked about the last minute nature of buying tickets. I've talked about me in general being kind of a last minute kind of person. I get FOMO and I really want to go to this stuff. But if you for some reason have not had a chance to come out and check out or did not No, we're doing our pickleball tournament. I think there's still time to show up. And even if you haven't signed up yet, come on out.
Starting point is 00:41:24 I'm sure we'll figure out a way to get you in there. But we are having our pickleball tournament tomorrow morning, 10 a.m. out there at Chicken and Pickle. An amazing facility, by the way. Like just a great place to go out and have a good time. And of course, the proceeds from this also go to an amazing cause. They go to Big Brothers, Big Sisters. So again, I know it's last minute.
Starting point is 00:41:43 I know it's getting late. I know this is like asking if I can come over right now and hang out without like clearing this with you guys first. But if you have nothing going on tomorrow morning, I will be out there a little bit. Don't tell my mom our party doesn't start until noon. I'm going to come stop by for a bit. And the PHNX crew will be out there.
Starting point is 00:42:01 We're going to be having our big pickleball tournament. Most importantly, that pickleball tournament is going to be happening indoors where it's air conditioned at chicken and pickles. So do not miss out on that. But again, great time to be had. And weird time to be a Diamondbacks fan. weird time to be wondering what's going to happen with this team. Now, today, it feels like things have escalated for this team. It really did go from the Diamondbacks suspects that you imagine
Starting point is 00:42:30 being on the trade block or being pieces of Diamondbacks were planning to move, being the guys on expiring contracts, even though those guys are some of the best players on this team, Zach Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Josh Naylor, A. Heu Anios Suarez. But that seemed to have escalated and there is talks, there's rumors, there's reports. The Diamondbacks are taking calls on as many as five or six guys. And then that today, based on Mike Hazen's media availability via Zoom from Pittsburgh, escalated to now somehow being about Cotel Marte and the Diamondbacks potentially trading Cotel Marte. And we'll get there.
Starting point is 00:43:08 But first we're going to start here with Mike Hazen's initial comments. This is what Mike had to say in regards to the two players they received back. in return for Josh Naylor from the Seattle Mariners and what exactly it is that they're looking for what their needs are and how difficult this process actually is to get back what they're trying to get back. I think in Garcia's case, obviously it's a big arm that's going to fit into our pen between now and in the future. You know, obviously everybody knows sort of what we've gone through with a bullpen this year. And part of what my anticipation is or goal is for this deadline, if possible, is to add
Starting point is 00:43:55 arms to the best we can. It's going to be tough. You know, I think the expectation of pulling back starters that are up here at this area of the, of the, you know, of the landscape is going to be extremely difficult when you're, when you're trading with teams. that are going for it and asking, you know, for the seventh date, six, seventh date starters that becomes challenging in trades. But I think we'll have more access to bullpen guys, which is still a huge area of need for
Starting point is 00:44:28 us long term, both today and into the future. And then with Izzy, you know, long-term starter potential. We see all the ingredients, the ability to mix pitches. He has a, he's young. he's obviously already in high A. You know, obviously he's a little bit further away. But looking to capture as much value as we could, unfortunately trading Josh was not something that we really intended to do
Starting point is 00:44:58 and we started out this season. But where we stand today, we felt like it was the right thing to do. And now, Tori, oh, by the way, Jesse Jr. has a birthday hat now in honor of Tori's birthday. Brandon Garcia, Mike Hazing confirmed, is going to be a left-handed bullpen arm for this team. He is going to be a reliever. He was the Mariners number 13 overall prospect by MLB.com. And he made his Major League debut just a little while ago on July 21st against the Brewers. He allowed a couple of runs in one inning of work on four hits and a walk.
Starting point is 00:45:34 And again, I think we posted on our Twitter account if you have a chance to look at it, what his numbers look like on his stuff and his stuff looks great. It would appear that the big problem has to do with the hitting the strike zone and getting his stuff in the zone. So we'll see if he can come along. In regards to that, Diamondbacks have optioned him to Reno, but it would appear that he is going to be an option for the Diamondbacks this season coming out of the bullpen potentially. Mike Hazen just didn't really know currently when that would be.
Starting point is 00:46:02 Didn't really know if that was going to be something that does in fact happen this season. but a lot of moving pieces on that. The important part about Brandon Garcia is how close he is to being Major League Ready. And as you heard there from Mike Hazen, that's kind of the problem, is that you're not really getting those offers from teams. And the Diamondbacks aren't trying to tear this thing down to the studs and rebuild, though they might if they deem that that's necessary.
Starting point is 00:46:28 That's not something I think any of us want to see, but it's definitely a possibility. Now, in regards to the other arm being a little bit more farther away, that's Ashton Izzy. What we've heard from Mariners fans so far on Izzy is that they really like him, and he's the part of this deal that apparently Mariners fans are not happy about losing. He was ranked as the Mariners number four overall pitching prospect by Baseball America and number seven pitching prospect by MLB Pipeline. He is ranked as the Mariners number 13th overall prospect,
Starting point is 00:47:03 and he is currently in high A. He has been assigned to the Hillsborough Hopes. Not a bad place to be. Good, good logo, good everything out there. But again, Josh Naylor, what can you say about his time for this team? He was incredible. I think the only thing that, you know, left a little to be desired was his defense. And some of that had to do with coming off of or playing in the shadow of somebody as good as Christian Walker.
Starting point is 00:47:28 But, you know, Nailer batted 292 this season with a 360 on base percentage, 447 slug for an 807 OPS. He had 19 doubles. a triple, 11 home runs. He stole a career high, 11 stolen bases. So if there's anything that Josh Nader leaves here as, it's a chaos causer and a much faster runner. He also had 59 RBI, and he did all that in 93 games. So he was the first, he had the best batting average on the team.
Starting point is 00:47:57 He had the second most hits, second highest OVP. He had the third highest number of doubles and the third highest RBI. So the Diamondbacks are losing a significant part of their offense. with Josh Naylor leaving this team. However, up until this recent stretch, especially against these games, you know, today against the pirates, three games against Houston Astros,
Starting point is 00:48:18 offense really hasn't been the problem for this team this season, and it's been about pitching, which is the reason why the Diamondbacks are trying to do everything they can to get some arms back, and why, as you heard there from Mike Hazen, arms is the priority.
Starting point is 00:48:31 But the bigger thing here is the idea of what the Diamondbacks are looking to do, if they are looking to do, to actually complete this fire sale. Get rid of all four of these guys, or five, or six, or seven, however many they might get rid of. And it sounds very much like Mike Hazen has still not made that decision. In fact, he told us that exact thing today.
Starting point is 00:48:53 Here's what Hayes had to say. I'm not sure yet. Honestly, I want to see this team continue to go out there and play. I haven't decided what it's going to look like, honestly. I'm open-minded to a number of different things. We're still in the controllable player market on the by side. So I don't know. You know, quite frankly, we're listening to what people have to say
Starting point is 00:49:18 and what people have to offer. And we're going to do what's best for the long-term, long-term good for this organization. But we're still today running out there. We still have a very talented baseball team that is very capable to go out there and win this baseball game today. And we'll see what happens at the end of it. that is not a person that knows what he really is going to do. And like I said yesterday,
Starting point is 00:49:46 I would love to be in the room when Mike Hazen is taking these calls from people. And I really wish that it was going the exact same way it did in Moneyball where he's just making these weird idle threats to other GMs. And he's like, well, you got five minutes to offer me, Andre Munoz, or else I'm calling the Red Sox and hangs up on Jerry DiPoto. I think that would be baller. but I think for good reason, right? Like, again, what I said earlier is probably,
Starting point is 00:50:15 and this is just me, once again, speculating as I always do, that the Diamondbacks, Mike Hazen really does believe in this team. Everybody believes in this team. Tori believes in this team. They believe they have the talent here to do it. They don't believe that they need to go out there and add other guys. They just need guys to get out of slumps, whether it's a pitcher in a slump,
Starting point is 00:50:35 whether it's a guy offensively in a slump. I mean, Gino hasn't hit a home run in two games. I don't know what's wrong with him. He must be absolutely broken now at this point. But again, it's really the feeling that if the starting pitching can go out there and do what the starters are doing, and if someone like Anthony Descliffeani can go out there and give you what he's giving you so far this season in the length and the performances that he's giving you out of the bullpen.
Starting point is 00:50:58 And Kevin Ginkle can maybe be that guy that now locks things down in the ninth inning. You do feel like maybe you're just a couple of arms away potentially from actually being a competitive ball club, right? You know the offense is there, but that's what makes this so hard. And I think the fact that it's not a need to go out there and get extra personnel, the fact that you know that the majority of the guys
Starting point is 00:51:21 that brought this team to the World Series in 2023 are here still playing, they're going to play tomorrow against the pirates, they're going to play on Sunday against the pirates. It's hard not to believe that those guys can turn it around, especially with the offensive numbers that they're putting up, because they were not putting up
Starting point is 00:51:36 these kind of offensive numbers in 2023. The big difference is how bad the bullpen is, which is a mess. And it's basically just kind of been patched and bandated all year long. It's been wrapped up. It's been added to. They've tried to do everything they can. And again, I know there's at least four of you that are in here in this chat that come on this show every single time and scream for Toy Lavallo's job.
Starting point is 00:52:01 But the fact of the matter is that even though he has mismanaged, plenty of games, and I'm not even going to argue with you on that. The true villain of this season is injury. And whether or not you think you want to blame that on Tori Lavallo or the Brian Kaplan or the strength and conditioning coach or the medical staff, none of those people are people you can honestly sincerely blame. It's someplace you blame when you're angry, but not a place that you can blame blame in reality. In reality, you might just want to blame the direction the game.
Starting point is 00:52:36 game of baseball has gone in order to, you know, in causing these injuries. But this is the big comment. We need to get to this because Mike Hazen did get asked if guys under contract were possibly going to be targeted for trades. If it was just the guys on expiring contracts or if guys who are currently under long-term deals were going, if the dimebacks were taking calls on them. This is exactly what Mike Hazen had to say about that, and I hope this clarifies things. So the contract guys are definitely taking up the majority, if not all of our attention.
Starting point is 00:53:17 I'm not going to shock you with this comment, but of the guys that Ketel, Corbyn, Moreno, Perdomo, fought Nelson, like the younger group that's under long-term control, they're all calling me about them too. So it's just one of those things where you have to, you know, in almost every conversation, it's, you know, what would you guys talk about these guys at all? And, you know, if I say, you know, well, it depends on what you're talking about,
Starting point is 00:53:55 it would be a haul. That usually shuts the conversations down pretty quickly. So the majority of the conversations that are real conversations in my mind surround the guys that are that are coming coming up. Most times at the deadline, anytime you're talking about controllable guys, you can have some conversations around them sometimes. But invariably, everybody just says, well, this is something that doesn't have to happen right now. We can kick it to the off season if it's something we want to talk about. But I'm not as inclined to do those things. I think, you know, my focus is more on the guys that are that are expiring at the end of the year.
Starting point is 00:54:37 So that's just sort of the nature of what happens right now. So there's the comment. I don't know how Kattel became the focus of the comment. I showed some tweets to Ayrton and he was kind of baffled as well because obviously you saw there that that Hazen not just mentioned Ketel. He mentioned everybody, Pardomo, Corbyn, He talked about Brandon Fott. He said, Ryan Nelson.
Starting point is 00:54:59 He said they're getting calls on all of these guys because that's what a good GM does for another team. Like, investigates, probes, asked questions, sees who's available, sees what kind of thought process Mike Hazen has, sees what direction the franchise is going. Hey, are you guys going to do like a Tampa Bay race thing over there? Are you guys going to, you guys are going to just fire, you're going to fire sale everybody? Because we're totally interested, right? it's like it's like when your friend has stuff that he's giving away but he hasn't really offered anything to you specifically you kind of just need to check in like so you're off video games now huh what are you going to do with that PS5 like he hasn't said anything he's probably going
Starting point is 00:55:39 be like oh i'm going to take it to the children's hospital no i mean that yeah i can't ask you to give me your PS5 over the children's hospital but i would be i wouldn't be doing my due diligence as a friend if i didn't check in and neither would GMs in baseball they wouldn't be doing their due diligence if they didn't check in while calling about gino while calling about merrill kelly to also see like hey would you be willing to hear something for corbin carroll and be like yeah i'll take your entire pitching staff everybody and your bullpen i'll take all of those guys and i'll trade you corbin carroll and that's when they have a good laugh and then they hang up phones and then they never talk again right so no there's no trades for catal marty no there's no trades for corbin
Starting point is 00:56:16 none of that is happening so regardless of the way that people on social media might have made you feel as a fan. That was just Mike being honest that yes, in fact, when GMs do call him, they do call him about other players, not just the four guys, not just the six guys that are on expiring contracts. It goes far beyond them. And I think that happens in every sport. And it's probably happening with all the other teams that are fielding those phone calls as well. So it's just a negotiation tactic. And again, if they are willing to hear you out, that's when like a huge deal gets made and maybe that happens. But in the case of the Diamondbacks, the biggest point is, that Mike said that this was not to shed contract, not to shed income.
Starting point is 00:56:56 It's not trying to get money off the books. This is not due to finances. So right now, the Diamondbacks are in a good position, at least as that is concerned, they are in a position of power in regards to trading these guys. And don't be surprised if you see more names moved, but it would be great if the name not moved. Started with an E and had an S in there and went something like we know it's G-No. Appreciate you guys. Again, so much for being here after this atrociously bad baseball game. At least the Diamondbacks walk away with a win in extra innings and send us home.
Starting point is 00:57:32 Kind of happy. But again, based on the trade deadline, I'm not allowed to go to the movies anymore. Leah won't let me go to the movies. I can't watch Superman. I can't watch Fantastic Four. I'm very upset about all of that. So I'm going to pout quite a bit this weekend while waiting for something to happen. But Mike, it would be great if you just gave us the weekend off. please it's my mom's birthday tomorrow can I have the day off probably not I'll probably see you guys on the emergency pod

Starting point is 00:58:25 I kind of like that. But again, like I said the other day, I don't know how many more times. We're going to even get to use this cactus light. So we'll see. But I hope you guys have a wonderful weekend. Barring any emergency podcast, we will be back on Monday at 12 p.m.

Because if it doesn't ruin my weekend next week is indeed, it has to be insane. It's going to be crazy. So, but again, we thank you guys so much. Appreciate you, Sean. Happy birthday, Mom.
Starting point is 00:58:55 Appreciate you giving me a chance to do this thing here on Earth. But appreciate all of you guys for tuning in. Hope you guys have a wonderful weekend. Maybe I hope we don't have to do an emergency pod, but I'll see you if we do. And of course, behave yourselves and remember kids. Baseball is fun, but it's so much more fun when you realize sometimes trades have to happen, but they don't have to involve. Ketel Marte.
