Episode Date: June 11, 2026

The Arizona Diamondbacks continue to spiral, suffering yet another embarrassing loss to the Miami Marlins in an 8-0 shutout that felt over long before the final out. We break down another rough night ...for the D-backs, including one of the worst starts of Ryne Nelson’s career, defensive miscues from an inexperienced outfield, and a team that got thoroughly outplayed in every facet of the game. We also try to make sense of Arizona’s baffling offensive struggles and discuss why a lineup loaded with talent has been unable to find any consistency or momentum this season. Is this just a rough stretch, or is something bigger going on? Plus, Derek takes the show completely off the rails as he unveils his controversial plan to disrupt an upcoming pygmy hippo wedding. Starting point is 00:00:00 The Arizona Diamondbacks lose to the Miami Marlins 8 to nothing, but it has to be over before we can be back. Am I right? Eat that song so much but even more today. Welcome in to another edition of the PHNX DBAX podcast live from Studio K, presented by our friends in Circle K. It's all I got. It's cathartic when I do it that way.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Welcome in to another edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast. I am your mayor of PHNX, occasionally known as Derek Montaia. That music you hear means we got our butts kicked and that man on the ones and twos is occasionally known as Damon dog, not the DeBack's dog, but he's all of your dogs
Starting point is 00:00:54 and he's not very happy. Not Paven Smith's dog. Oh, he's definitely not Paven Smith's dog. He had a lot of things to say. In fact, I felt like I predicted every single one of Payman Smith's strikeouts. It wasn't tough to do. It was not tough to do.
Starting point is 00:01:07 You're damn right about that. This is the PHNX Divac show. show and we are brought to you by our friends over at Bet365. We're winning is everything, something that we have not felt in a while here. But of course, you can feel what it's like to win over at Bet365. Download the app today and use that code of PHNX 365. We're also brought to you by GameTime. Download the GameTime app.

You might not want to hit the like button on this video for the Diamondbacks efforts tonight, but you should like it for Damon's efforts and my efforts. for being here and having to talk about this dreadful game and this dreadful team. The D-Backs got wrecked tonight by the Miami Marlins by a score of eight to nothing. And they are just one game above 500 currently sitting at 34 and 33. Damon, this might be my last chance to see it. I know it's not the right kind of occasion.
Starting point is 00:02:01 No, no. We might never see him again go up the mountain, Damon. But we can't destroy the sanctity of it, Derek. I don't want to see this team going up anything. Can we send him down the mountain? I wish I had that ready to go because the headline of this episode is the downward spiral continues
Starting point is 00:02:17 and I refuse to look at little Jerry P going up that mountain right. Yeah, you should but maybe we'll have a new segment for you guys where we'll play some blame around here which is something you guys love to do but again, I'm back to sit at just 34 and 33 now after losing today
Starting point is 00:02:34 the debacks had no answer for the Marlins no answer at all. The debacks, of course, got dominated on, you know, one day removed from where we thought, here their offense performed, but their pitching staff truly let them down. On this night, every facet of this team let them down. They did have some good defense at one point. They also had some very, very bad defense. But Ryan Nelson had one of his worst starts.
Starting point is 00:03:04 Can I just say yesterday, the situational hitting was also horrible. right like you know even though the offense put up six runs they were two for 14 with runners in scoring position and that this team continues to really really struggle at getting hits at the right time even when they are playing decent ball they refuse to play complimentary baseball something a phrase that we've said entirely too much i mean we i want to sit here and get started on the offense but i have that reserve for uh segment two here also like i said we are going to play the blame game and we are going to determine whose fault all of this is or at least who we think every facet of this loss is. It's kind of on everybody. But again, the Marlins just dominated
Starting point is 00:03:48 the Diamondbacks on both sides of the ball. This is another embarrassing loss for this team, something that has felt far too common recently for the Arizona Diamondbacks. And Nellie had one of the worst starts of his career. No way around it. It started with the very first batter of the game getting a single, even though We thought, I thought, Damon thought. What we saw was the D-backs turning a double play on that nemesis of ours, that thorn in our side, Otto Lopez, who happens to be the greatest hitter in the history of Major League Baseball somehow,
Starting point is 00:04:25 and that has continued against us. Our guy, Alex D'Agostino, tried to warn us that he was going to hit 950 against the Diamondbacks of the series. He might be right about that. However, in the first inning, they turned the double play on Lopez and made us believe that things might be going our way. And what a joke that ended up being with the way this game ended up going. And then in the second, it was more of the same for Nelly. He let the lead-off hitter Xavier Woods get on.
Starting point is 00:04:50 He walked him. But some solid defense would get Nelson out of that particular inning as well. But with two outs in the third, Hicks would triple and then score on an Otto Lopez RBI single for the game's first. run the debacks were down one to nothing after three all of this was fine the lack of offense once again early was troublesome the diamondbacks did have a few you know hits early it felt like you know maybe they were going to break through any moment that never happened that that that time never came for them to break through uh they they were held very limited on hits tonight and again those hits did not happen in in and in in in any consecutive inning except i believe that
Starting point is 00:05:35 the sixth inning. I think that was a, they did have two hips in the first. But again, Diamondbacks just could not get anything going. But Ryan Nelson just fell apart in the fourth inning. And again, it was one of those situations where it was frustrating because it all happened essentially with two outs. He did once again let the leadoff hitter, Herberto, Hernandez, get on with a single. In fact, he allowed three out of the four lead off hitters he faced to reach base tonight, which was a big prize. problem for Nelson getting behind, not only with base runners on, but getting behind in the count. But with two outs, he gave up a home run, a two run, home run to Owen Cassie to put
Starting point is 00:06:18 the Marlins up three to nothing. That felt bad enough at the time, especially with the way that this offense was struggling. But things would only get worse. San Oja would get a single. Liam Hicks would get hit by a pitch by Nelly. And then Otto Lopez once again would hit an RBI single that put the Marlins up four to nothing. That felt once again bad because we were getting single to death by the Marlins on a second consecutive night. But then Kyle Stowers essentially put this game away, all the way away, with a three-run bomb that put Miami up seven to nothing.
Starting point is 00:06:53 And again, I'm not, you know what? We said it last night and we're doing it again. And I love the good circle K strikeout meter and all its years of service. that's provided the Arizona Diamondbacks, but it's it's an older device that takes a lot of power at this point. And I think it's fraudulent for us to plug it in and turn it on for two strikeouts. Because that's all Natalie got tonight. It was two strikes.
Starting point is 00:07:20 I mean, and you know, Derek, some people might ask some questions. Did the reemergence of the strikeout meter curse this pitching staff? People have been talking. I don't think that's the strikeout meter's fault. No, I don't either. In fact, I was just going as far as, say, Derek, that I think that Circle K is above what this pitching staff has put out onto the field the last, you know, two weeks or so.
Starting point is 00:07:42 The strikeout meter deserves better. I think Circle K absolutely deserves better. This fan base deserves better. The Diamondbacks deserve better. Circle K field day tomorrow. What the hell has happened to this staff, Damon? I don't even, I feel like this is a nightmare. I feel like I'm dreaming and I want to be woken up.
Starting point is 00:08:02 I felt like we were just simply. talking about one solid starting performance after the next from this staff. And yeah, it was against teams that were bad, right? But I saw the Rockies beat the Cubs. I saw the Giants who were down, what, nine to nothing walk off the Nationals. I mean, those are the teams the Diamondbacks have beat. It's not like to say these are completely incompetent teams. In fact, Damon was telling me the Giants over the stretch,
Starting point is 00:08:33 including when they played the Diamondbacks are like number one in several offensive categories. Yeah, it's like OPS slug and hits over the last 30 days. The Giants are number one in all of them and they're 11 and 17 over those 28 games. Man, I will tell you the fact that this pitching staff that was giving the Diamondbacks a historic number of quality starts in the month of May has just collectively as a group fallen apart in the same way that the offense has collectively as a group falling apart. It's the oddest thing. And really what it comes down to once again is the everybody is trying to win the entire game for the team.
Starting point is 00:09:14 It feels like everybody is just trying entirely too hard. It just doesn't work in baseball. It's the reason why with runners in scoring position, the Diamondbacks have been terrible. They didn't give themselves opportunities. But like Damon said, last night, not converting runners in scoring position. you know, where it was, was the reason why they lost tonight, oh for nine, oh for nine with runners in scoring position. Brutal.
Starting point is 00:09:43 Absolutely brutal. How many times have we talked about the runners in scoring position recently, Derek? Yeah. It feels like every single game. Yeah. Thunderbolt, who never shows up anymore, is here just to scream about Tori. And honestly, on a night where all facets of the team was outplayed by the opposition, It's hard not to blame the manager, but you weren't here to praise the manager when this pitching staff was just a few weeks ago giving the Diamondbacks the second most quality starts in team history in the month of May, right?
Starting point is 00:10:19 I'm just saying it's more baffling that this is that same pitching staff, right? And they did that in May against a lot of good teams, right? Not just the Rockies and the Giants. They did that in May against plenty of good teams. However, this is not that anymore. And I mean, at a point Ryan Nelson was dialed in. We felt like Nellie was at the best that he has been. Tonight he was the worst that he's been possibly in his career,
Starting point is 00:10:48 but definitely this season. He obviously used his four seam a lot, but, you know, again, 45% four seam usage for Nellie is drastically down for his season average. His fastball maxed out at 97.6, but it average 95.6, which is below his yearly average. And again, it was, I don't know, they brought it up on the broadcast. They were saying he was staying away from high in the zone. It looked like he just couldn't hit the top part of the zone. And at one point, just stopped kind of throwing the ball there, right?
Starting point is 00:11:24 But as you can see, he made plenty of attempts there with his four seam to go high in the zone. A lot of them were high and outside. Same thing with the cutter. But his pitches were all over the place. His slider was all over the place. His curb ball wasn't really curving. He did get two whiffs on his sinker that he only threw 7% of the outing.
Starting point is 00:11:44 Through the sinker very little, but got a couple of whiffs on that. One whiff on the slider, which he threw 20% of the outing and then three whiffs tonight on the four seam. But again, only two strikeouts tonight for Nelly. And again, it wasn't a matter of pitch mix because his pitch mix was better,
Starting point is 00:12:03 it was just a matter of him not having command over pretty much anything. And his force team, again, was just bad, both location-wise and also, you know, with his average velocity on it tonight. But really didn't matter what the bullpen did, I guess you could say. The Wieskeau wasn't great once again. In his inning of work, he gave up two hits and an earned run. He didn't get any strikeouts. He didn't get any walks.
Starting point is 00:12:30 but he did give up an additional run that put the Miami Marlins up 8 to nothing and that's where the score ended. Flowers to Dre Jameson, our guy who's made his way back to this team, getting an opportunity at a big league level. He's once again overcome so many injuries and hurdles. Maybe he should have been Kingsnake.
Starting point is 00:12:49 Maybe Jameson should have been Kingsnake because he gave the Diamondbacks two and two-thirds inning scoreless tonight. He did walk one, struck out one, no hits, no runs. great night from Dre. And as always, we always seem to forget about Dre. Puts fire in Derek's blood. Sadly, even Dre Jameson couldn't put fire in my blood tonight with the way that this team performed.
Starting point is 00:13:17 You did get Juan Medio to come in and get one out. He did strike out a guy and that was it. But yeah, I mean, not much to write home about from the pitching staff, not much to write home about from the offense. This was just an all around terrible night for the Arizona Diamondbacks. We do, though, as Damon brought up, we do have to give our Kingsnake to somebody. And of course, that somebody is once again, nobody, nobody deserves the King Snake. You thought after getting beat by 8 to nothing, we were going to give the King Snake to somebody? Well, it's just funny because Derek, they thought when we lost
Starting point is 00:13:58 7-0 to the Dodgers that there was going to be a king snake. And now they thought again when we lost 80. Oh, you thought losing to the Dodgers, 7 to nothing we were going to give a king snake? What did you think was going to happen when we lost to the Miami Marlins, 8 to nothing? I'm disgusted, Damon. This has to be rock bottom for this team at this point. Yeah. They've lost nine out, what was nine out of the last 12?
Starting point is 00:14:29 And Derek, I tweeted it at the very end of the game. I think it might have been as the fly ball that was in between Tommy Troy and Ryan Walschman was in the air that I was formulating this tweet. And it just almost encapsulated everything I was talking about. Every time the Diamondbacks separate themselves from the pack, take a wild card spot, feel like they're building towards having a record that is going to keep them relevant enough for the rest of the season, they fall off of an absolute cliff. every single time.
Starting point is 00:15:00 And not only do they fall off a cliff, they play the worst baseball in the entire league during that time period. We were just talking about this team as the hottest team in the league in the national league before two weeks ago. I want to go make mean comments on that video. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:14 And now this team has lost nine of 12 and they're playing worst baseball by the day. Yeah. You know, yesterday was a very winnable game and you lost six to 10. And, you know, two for 14 runners in scoring position, In addition, Otto Lopez gets a hit every single time that there's two outs and runners in scoring position. And conversely, your guys never come through in the big moments recently.
Starting point is 00:15:38 But today was just to compound that with an 8-0 loss to a team that is middling, as we are, but a team that you want to win these series against so that you build up that wild card resume. And for them to just come out and skunk you like they did, I mean, this is embarrassing, Derek. This was, this was such an embarrassing game. Obviously, everybody wears it. I see some talk about Tori, and it's, it's bound to be Tori talk, right? Because the team just looked unprepared today. And I think a lot of times when the team looks this unprepared, you point to the manager
Starting point is 00:16:12 because you say, how is everyone bad? Yes. He's the guy that, you know, is supposed to get everybody ready to play and juiced, right? You're jumping ahead. We're going to play the blame game. We are. We are. We absolutely are.
Starting point is 00:16:25 I just wanted to say that I agree with what. piece of Yoshi put here in the chat, which is to the effect of, you know, I, I don't think it's Tori necessarily. I'm also not sure it's not Tori, as he says here, if that makes sense. And like, I think that the crux of it is that I don't think firing Tori, especially midseason, will do anything for this team really. I think that this team is just kind of what they are. And unless there's upgrades that get made, which it's going to be hard to buy into making upgrades if they keep playing this kind of baseball, you know,
Starting point is 00:17:00 then unless upgrades get made, it's just going to continue to be like this. Because the team, like the back end of their roster is just frankly not good enough. Some other great comments here. Sean says, Marlins are hot right now and we're scuffling. True.
Starting point is 00:17:12 Very good point. Same with the Mariners. Same with the Nats. Yeah. We got all these teams at tough periods of time. Ashton in the chat says, look, I hate Tori,
Starting point is 00:17:22 but I hate high key hate this roster more than that. Fair, dude. That's fair. And Tori doesn't create the roster. But Becca made a better point. If you go up a little bit more, Damon, Becca said, seems the chat is the king snake, with the finger pointing our way.
Starting point is 00:17:39 Let's throw that king snake back up on the screen, if we could. All fans are the collective king snake for tuning into games this season. And Becca's right. When we're looking at this king snake, that's you, you're the king snake for putting up with this team and still supporting this team. emphasis on you thought yeah yeah that's our thought you you you're the king snake thought like seriously no no seriously no seriously there's an NBA finals game going on and you're here watching us talk about an eight to nothing loss you guys are beautiful wonderful people that we love so much even if even if even if you're here to yell about tory uh thunderbolt we love you too so
Starting point is 00:18:19 uh but we're going to take a quick break on the other side of this break we get to talk about how atrocious this offense was on another night and again, it's time to play the blame game. Don't you guys go anywhere? You're watching the PHNX Diamondback show. Tonight is a night for Don Julio for sure. And not to celebrate, not touching the trophy bottle. I don't know if this podcast that covers this particular team
Starting point is 00:18:45 will ever get to touch a trophy ever again with the way this team is playing right now. But luckily, this is an honor of the World Cup. And with the biggest sporting event coming to our backyard, You got to toast with the icon of celebration. Don Julio, 1942, the Dawn. The Dawn. The World Cup.
Starting point is 00:19:02 I can't even touch that bottle because we don't have the proper white gloves in the studio right now. But that bottle is available as are two other bottles for you to take home as trophies for yourself, for you being a true winner. They have the icon of celebration, which is a bit of their normal size. They have the grandiose one over here, which is the trophy for legends on and off the field. and then they even make a mini for small but iconic moments. And everyone can take a version of this trophy home, take home a special edition of Don Julio 1942
Starting point is 00:19:33 that honors the artistry of tequila making, a symbol is timeless as the beautiful game itself and inspired by the FIFA World Cup trophy. As we've been telling you guys, we're going to have watch parties all week long, all World Cup long. So make sure to come join us at all those places. We'll be having a fun time,
Starting point is 00:19:52 giving out samples and prizes for those in attendance. So whether you're at your favorite spot, hanging out with us or stocking up for home, make it a Don Julio, 1942. And summer's here, as many of you know. It's weird in this building because we freeze in this downtown office building that does not require us to pay for the energy bills here. But at home, things get hot. And of course, we could all use some help managing our energy bills.
Starting point is 00:20:20 APS wants to help us do that, especially during June, July, and August. APS has several ways that they can help you save money during these hot summer months. APS customers can check the monthly plan comparison section on their energy bill every month to see which rate plan could have saved them the most for that month. Or once again, as I've said time and time again, you can also verify that you're on the right plan. You can give yourself a pat on the back for saving yourself the most money. Rate plan options can help you save money and they're all right there in blue type on your latest energy bill from APS. They also have budget billing options which can average out your bill throughout the year.
Starting point is 00:20:55 so that you pay the exact same amount month after month without having to experience those high spikes during the summer month. So find all of your options to manage your bill at APS.com slash let's talk and do it right now. Well, I want to talk about the offense, but what offense really was there to talk about, Damon? I mean, really, honestly. I mean, none. Diamondbacks got themselves six hits tonight. They were all scattered around. I guess Gabby and we got a comment in the chat about we need, we need.
Starting point is 00:21:26 to respect Gabby a little bit more and give him his flowers. And all transparency, who was our king snake before you and I? Gabby was. Disgust that nobody deserved it. It just felt bad giving a king snake to anybody. That's really what it comes down to. On a night where you lose eight to nothing, is anybody truly your most valuable player? Is anybody truly king snake?
Starting point is 00:21:45 Damon was right. Dre Jameson probably deserved it. Honorable mentions to Dre. Honorable mentions to Gabby because he did have two hits tonight. And when it comes to this lineup, two hits does look like a king snake. compared to most of the lineup. Cotell Marte 0 for 5 tonight. Pavin Smith, 0 for 3 with two strikeouts and a walk.
Starting point is 00:22:05 Ilmaro Vargas, 0 for 4 with a strikeout. You got Tommy Troy, 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. Ryan Walshman added one double late in the ninth inning that was kind of meaningless there. Perdomo, he's come up big recently, but he really did not come up for this team tonight in a couple of big spots. He was one for four with a strikeout.
Starting point is 00:22:26 Gabby Moreno, two for three with a walk. And this offense, I don't know what the hell's wrong with it. Debeck's got a pair of singles in the first inning with Corbyn Carroll and Geraldo Podomo getting on, but with runners on the corners, Nolan Aronado and Pavin Smith both struck out to end the inning. The snakes were held to just three hits in their first five innings and six hits total. And then the sixth inning was the only inning where they had multiple base runners again after that first. with one out, Moreno singled, Aronado singled, and Pavan walked to load the bases. Pardoma would fly out and Vargas would strike out.
Starting point is 00:23:02 And then similar offensive output in the eighth inning where a carol and Aronado walked and the debacks had two base runners with one out, Pave and struck out, Pardomo struck out. What the hell is wrong with this offense? Truly, truly, what is wrong with this offense? I cannot figure it out. I know that there's things you can look at like Chase. I know that, again, we've kind of addressed that in general, it feels like they try to do too much.
Starting point is 00:23:34 We hear that from Tori. We hear that from members of the coaching staff. We hear that from the players themselves, that they're just out there trying to do too much. It explains why they're so atrocious with runners in scoring position because even when they're able to handle the bat get a hit, it's like they're even more filled with anxiety when they have a runner on because they're so you know they're trying so hard to bring that runner home it's not about caring it's about confidence
Starting point is 00:24:04 and it's about just again not taking what naturally comes to you as a hitter versus whatever the hell that they're doing right now and i mean again this team right now is is they have problems all over the place. But their biggest problem continues to be their lack of production from their designated hitter. Pavan walking occasionally is fine. But Pavin has been very bad for this team and continues to be very bad. The big problem seems to be that, you know, all it takes is one or two of those guys in
Starting point is 00:24:38 your lineup. Two of those guys is really what it takes. But two of those guys in your lineup and one hitting high enough for every single rally, every single situational hitting situation, to kind of turn on you because they can't deliver in those big moments when they have base runners on in scoring position. Again, 0 for 9 tonight. The Diamondbacks left 10 base runners on base. I'm not saying that that would have been enough to overcome the pitching shortcomings tonight, right?
Starting point is 00:25:06 But it's still just baffling, baffling how this team can make you believe that they're going to get things on track. And then once again, they just absolutely disappear offensively. I imagine it's as frustrating for them as it is for us as fans to watch, right? But they are the ones that are in control of this. We are merely bystanders here when it comes to this whole situation, right? But defensively, like I said, the Diamondbacks were fine. The defense did their best to keep them in the play in the game. There was that double play turned by Perdomo in the first inning to Marte-Ide-Ill-Morrow
Starting point is 00:25:44 to get out of Lopez. That was big after allowing the first runner of the game to get on. the single. Marte robbed Jacob Marcy. Jacob Marcy was involved in a lot of these situations it felt like tonight. He robbed him of a line drive there in the second. That was a nice play by Marte. Marte
Starting point is 00:26:01 Pardomo. The very next play got Morel with a nice snag and then Tommy Troy made a really nice grabbing sliding grab in the seventh in the outfield to steal a hit from Hernandez one of those plays that went successfully for Tommy Troy versus some of those
Starting point is 00:26:17 other diving plays that have not gone his way. But you know when he wasn't good was when him and Ryan Waldschmidt and the fifth just watched a ball sland between them that really inexcusable. That it was inexcusable.
Starting point is 00:26:32 It was inexcusable. It really was an example of their youth and inexperience. Nobody called the ball for the ball. Tommy Troy was right underneath it. He could have absolutely made a play on it and just didn't. Pulled his glove back and let the ball just drop.
Starting point is 00:26:48 it was one of the worst defensive plays of the year by far that we've seen and again it just goes to show how to fairly inexperienced outfielders playing in positions that they don't normally play in out there had that happen right but again Troy was under it nobody called for it nobody caught it or even really went for it and yeah it's just been bad it's all been bad Damon it's all been bad now is when we would normally talk about who was the top performers on offense. And it's just Gabby Marino, two for three tonight with a double, or not even a double, excuse me. No, extra base hits for this team tonight.
Starting point is 00:27:29 No, they did actually end up with one now that I realize it. They got that Ryan Walschmidt double late in the game in the ninth inning, Damon. So I might have screwed up the numbers for tonight. But two singles, a walk. Marino, it raises his batting average. It's okay, Derek. I didn't do the numbers tonight. So it's good.
Starting point is 00:27:47 don't I guess not I don't know Damon I don't know what what the hell is wrong with this team I refuse I refuse to have this chat Derek and you know the 50 of our best friends in the entire world that are here right now have to do the bird box me opening up their eyes to look at the by the numbers we're not doing that right now we're not doing that I will I will say that that that situation the Tommy Troy Ryan Walschman situation is just such a microcosm of yeah what's going on right now where it's like somebody step up someone want the baseball huh like Tommy Troy get the the center fielder has he he can take priority over you if he calls you off right you have to get out of the way but based off the way Ryan Walschman reacted and maybe we find out and it comes to light that this is untrue but it did not look like Ryan Walschman called him off
Starting point is 00:28:38 Tommy Troy is essentially camped under the baseball kind of jogging for his last couple steps over make the play man make the play it really did feel like Ryan Walschman was just running in to kind of back him up. Yeah. Yeah. And but then Ryan Walschman didn't even back up properly because the baseball went all the way to the wall. So now we're also half-assing backing up a guy because we're not backing him up properly.
Starting point is 00:29:03 You saw him make eye contact. They looked at each other and they're like their expression said it all. They looked at each other. Nobody said anything. And then they both just kind of watched it fall. Yeah. It's just it's just not good enough. It's not good enough.
Starting point is 00:29:17 And that's the kind of, like, I think the defense actually was decent to start the game tonight. A lot of hard hit baseballs tonight. And, you know, you had that big double play by Pardomo and Ketel and great scoop by Vargas early. And, you know, Tommy did make a good play out there. But, yeah, I mean, that play alone makes it where the defense wears it as well. But the crux of the problem of why we are struggling right now is what Mark says here. And it's that we have three out of our five starters that are. employing negative war right now between
Starting point is 00:29:49 Zach Gallen, Merrill Kelly, and Ryan Nelson. Things were looking up for Ryan Nelson and Zach, or not Zach Allen, Ryan Nelson and Merrill Kelly for a little bit. Then they kind of went back down. We need those guys to step up and start pitching better. And my God, do we need Erod and Michael Soroka to keep carrying this pitching staff on their back? Because if they start regressing to the mean, this is, it could, I mean, we could be looking
Starting point is 00:30:13 at a completely utter disaster. Especially Erod, because. Yeah, we've seen what he looks. looks like most of his D-back's tenure. We see what the underlying metrics look like. If he starts pitching worse, this team could be one of the worst teams in baseball. Well,
Starting point is 00:30:27 I mean, he's, he's our ace right now, right? Yeah. And the results are what they are, right? But when you start looking at his baseball savant page,
Starting point is 00:30:36 it's a lot of blue, a lot of blue, a 4.63 expected ERA, a 265 expected batting average, a lot of numbers that don't look great, right? So, again, And it's something that analysts and fans have been expecting Erod to kind of fall off.
Starting point is 00:30:56 Luckily, he hasn't yet, but now would be a terrible time to do it. Frankly, I think that's the most frustrating thing about what's going on with this pitching staff right now is the Diamondbacks needed them to pitch their best with what's going on. The Corbyn Burns news seemed to cause everybody to fall apart. I don't know. Everybody was maybe pitching for a spot. maybe whatever. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:31:18 I don't want to like get crazy about what is in these guys' head. I'm sure it's nothing. I'm sure they're not even thinking about it. But the timing on it seems fairly odd. The minute that the Diamondbacks make the announcement that Corbyn Burns's return has been put off indefinitely, essentially, that that's when they needed Zach Gallen to start pitching his best. That's when they needed all of these guys to start stepping their game up.
Starting point is 00:31:42 Well, we need to see some positive regression from those three in particular. and avoid the negative regression from Erod and Soroka. And it just feels like these guys might just straight up be bad. And Erod and Soroka's regression is still looming and on the horizon potentially. Unless they just go out and just have a phenomenal full season. And you know what? Then hats off to them. And, you know, I apologize.
Starting point is 00:32:13 But it does feel like, as Mark says again, right here. and I feel like Mark's typically on the money with this stuff. He says, Erod will regress to the mean, and then it's well and truly over. I mean, and that would be the nail on the coffin. You can say that,
Starting point is 00:32:28 but there is no certainty to anything in baseball as much as you and your numbers want to. No, there's no certainty. But I think that that's what is more likely than not to happen as we currently sit here right now. Yeah, no, very true, because of how bad everything's going in general for this team, right? it comes to a point where, especially if this offense continues to not perform,
Starting point is 00:32:51 and this offense continues to not be able to put up runs on the board, it's going to put stress on this starting pitching staff to perform better, and that stress isn't going to, that's not going to turn into success. That's not going to be a spot where they're finding their best pitching of the year. Mark says, thank you for the super chat, Mark says, feels like the exact same team since the trade deadline. 2023, bad pitching, roller coaster offense won't change until front office philosophy does. Ha, I will disagree because the bullpen is at least better.
Starting point is 00:33:27 Right. Rob Roberto says personally this team is stagnant. Tori's got to go. That goes back to the comments from piece of Yoshi about yes. I mean, he was saying like, you can't, we can't not blame Tori for a loss like today. I mean, this is an inexcusable loss. where you have outfield miscommunication and, you know, guys can't hit with runners in scoring position and you just look fully unprepared.
Starting point is 00:33:51 But I also don't know what that's going to change necessarily. Well, Damon, we're going to figure it out because after this break, we are going to play the blame game. All of us. We're all going to play the blame game together. So don't you guys go anywhere. You're watching the PHNX Diamondback show. Well, Damon, if there has ever been a night for Pure Edibles,
Starting point is 00:34:13 it's after an eight to nothing loss. Pure Edibles and Don Julio. Yeah, those two pair very well together on a night like this. I need to get over this loss and pure edibles. Definitely has a candy for that. They're a full-fledged candy company offering you far more than just gummies, though they do have a delicious line of gummies and a variety of flavors, as well as shoes, which are their version of carmoles,
Starting point is 00:34:35 soft candies like carmels. They got hard candies, as well as kicks, which are their version of Starburst. And all of these flavors are listed on each tin along with what effects you're going to get from each particular candy. And there is a wide variety effects, of course, mood elevating effects, gummies that can help you get sleep. Of course, just in general, things to help you chill out, which is probably what we need tonight for sure.
Starting point is 00:34:59 But they also have their collaboration with Mother Road Brewing Company. These two fine companies come together to form Noble Road and bring us the Tower Station IPA All in One, a THC device designed specifically for me. This offering captures the crisp citrus and piney op. of Arizona's favorite IPA, the Tower Station IPA, but with a smooth CHC twist in an all-in-one device, no pouring, no waiting, just a good tasting high whenever you want it.
Starting point is 00:35:25 So go find yourself some Pure Edibles products from one of over 150 dispensaries across Arizona, now including True Leave. And if you're looking for the ultimate spot to watch the game, especially with the NBA finals going on, place a few bets and grab some drinks. You got to check out the El River Resorts and Casinos. It is the place to make a whole day out of it.
Starting point is 00:35:44 it when it comes to sports. This is Arizona's number one casino destination and they seriously know how to do sports right. Every bet MGM sports book is built for fans with wall-to-wall TVs, giant screens, and flexible ways for you to make your bets and cash them out. So you don't have to miss time and watching the game to go stand in line. Get all that done. Grab your crew, celebrate the big wins and enjoy everything he live at resorts and casinos has to offer. And that's what does matter if you're sweating out the same game parlay, cheering on on your favorite local Arizona sports team are just looking for the best game day atmosphere in the state.
Starting point is 00:36:20 Heal of Riversorts and casinos all the way you do you. Visit play atheela.com for more details. Top G is here, Damon, wanting to declare the time and death of this team. And unfortunately, it is too early for that. It is only June 10th and the Diamondbacks. No, Derek. Thank you fans. One game above 500. This literally says it's so over on the topic bar.
Starting point is 00:36:42 We said so we can be back. We can't be back if it wasn't over. And if it's not over, then we can't be back. But I will say also to the people that are talking about us being out of a wild card spot, you also have to stop too. None of you are in your right mind right now. There's no standings watching. There's no none of that at this point. Unless what you want to see is the Diamondbacks tumble their way out of the entire situation,
Starting point is 00:37:08 then you can watch it happen in real time. I still think that, again, this team's going through a rough stretch right now. How does it end? How do they end it? I don't know. Whose fault is it? Everyone's? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:37:21 But we're going to determine that on a new segment that we got cooking up for you right now that I already discussed. But it is time for us to play the blame game. So, Damon, I don't think we have music for it yet. No, not yet. We'll get, we'll upgrade this. But as it goes right now, Derek, we have this, of course, this game. There's four categories. It's pitching, batting, defense, and manager.
Starting point is 00:37:49 And we get to play the game of deciding who the issue was tonight. So here's our fancy branded segment. Shout out to our guy Noah Wolbrook for putting this together. He's so good at this. He absolutely is. Am I a billboard? You are on a billboard. You are on a billboard.
Starting point is 00:38:09 The Derek Montia billboard. I hope I'm on the I 17 because there's a good chance you're stuck. in traffic seeing me for a good decent amount of time instead of flying by me. That was a burn on the I-17. Well, let's figure out. I feel like I should do a lot of, you know, freeway humor being up here on this billboard. But that's just, that's just because I'm excited. Derek loves to play the blame game when he's on the freeway.
Starting point is 00:38:31 You know, I love it's my favorite game to play. It's never my fault, though. You know that. Damn right. Derek, whose fault is it? Everyone else is. And that's probably what tonight is. It's everyone's fault.
Starting point is 00:38:43 Is it not? Is it not everyone's fault? It's pitching's fault. It's hitting's fault. It's defense's fault. It's Tori's fault. It's everyone's fault. It's bad.
Starting point is 00:38:53 Things were bad tonight. You know what? I know we let's turn defense off. Can we get defense? No, I was going to say the defense wasn't bad tonight. But after that Walt Schmidt-T Troy situation, like that's just such a mental mistake that cannot happen in a major league baseball game. I alone, just for that play alone, which apparently is,
Starting point is 00:39:13 been deemed a hit and I need M will be scorekeepers to start doing their jobs properly again, Derek. But yeah, that that alone is keeping the defense on here for me. That's crazy. That truly is crazy that we had a hard time finding that. In matter of fact, I don't even know if that play I gave you it. It doesn't exist. No, it doesn't exist. There was no way for us to confirm it. And then we tried to rewind our broadcast. And for some reason, we couldn't do that either. But yes, Damon, it is everyone's fault. Mark says it best as he has all night long. He says, whose fault is it? Yes.
Starting point is 00:39:46 Correct. Yes. Uh-huh. I mean, yep. There's no arguments tonight on who's to blame because everyone's to blame. The offense and the lack of offense puts that extra pressure on the pitching staff, but
Starting point is 00:40:02 this thing got out of control fast and by the fourth inning they were down seven to nothing. So it's not like you're you have a lot of motivation as a hitter to go up there and make things happen. It's not a close game. We were joking at one point, but when the bases were loaded for Pavin Smith,
Starting point is 00:40:20 we were once again making a, no, it wasn't Pavin Smith, because Pave and Smith walked. It was after Pave and Smith walked. And we were saying how a grand slam in this moment doesn't even get you close. You're still down eight to four. Man.
Starting point is 00:40:39 Again. I mean, I want to blame pitching. I want to blame pitching. So, Damon, throw me back up on the billboard, please, because I'd like to address this in my own fashion. I want to blame pitching. I want to blame. We scored zero runs.
Starting point is 00:41:02 I want to blame batting. Yeah. I want to take defense off there. I know it was just one play. But it was such an inexcus. You can't just sit there and say it was just one play. It's the worst play of the season. I know.
Starting point is 00:41:14 But if you, if you just humor me, just let's turn to defense. I don't want to humor you. I thought I already made the, I made my dictator shot on this one, but it's fine. I mean,
Starting point is 00:41:24 you didn't even ask me by I'm not even going to let lights we were turning out here. I'm not even going to let you not blame Tori for this. Because I know so bad you want to try to tell these people, these 55 great people in the chat that it's not Tori Lovolo's fault. You want to so freaking bad. And I'm not even going to give you the chance. I'll take off defense, but this one's on Tori. All right.
Starting point is 00:41:50 Fine. I just, I don't want to get uninvited to Sunday dinner. I have a hat. That's how you compromise. That's how you compromise. All right. Jason's right. Risk lately for this team stands for really inconsistent starting pitching.
Starting point is 00:42:09 And that made me laugh. But yeah, Damon, I mean, this one, there's no getting around it, this effort, if you want to call it that. One extra base hit that was meaningless late in the game versus how many did they have? They had two home runs and then a triple and a double four for the Marlins, 10 hits, double digit hits once again for the Marlins. Otto Lopez is hitting 1,000. Otto Lopez is literally Honus Wagner. Like I'm going back. Derek,
Starting point is 00:42:48 I was joking. I went back and clicked on Honest Wagner's stat logs, like for different seasons. It showed a picture of Otto Lopez. It might as well have because he's literally a 340 hitter with like an 850 OPS. And like that's what Honest Wagner did. That's what that is exactly what Otto Lopez is doing right now. And it's, it is absolutely wild.
Starting point is 00:43:08 This guy came out of nowhere. And he owns us. It's like Jeremiah Jackson, but at least he's a better player. It feels worse when it's those guys who are like Bryce Matthews last year on the Astros or Jeremiah Jackson on the Orioles who are just straight up not really that good of baseball players. At least this guy is pretty freaking good. But I can't wrap my head around how good he is. I really can't. I do want to say one thing when it comes to the Diamondbacks team.
Starting point is 00:43:37 And that is, I think we should remember that these call-ups, as excited as we are that they are here, are all happening earlier than the Diamondbacks ever intended or would have wanted to. And as much as some people, I mean, they've turned on some of the youngsters, some people saying Ryan Walshmidt sucks, some people saying Jose Fernandez shouldn't have gotten sent down, some people saying he should have got sent down, some people already out on Tommy Troy. none of these guys, none of them, including Jose Fernandez, probably would have ever seen this roster if it wasn't once again for the pile of injuries that this team has experienced.
Starting point is 00:44:16 And who's to say they would have been better without these young guys? I'm not making that case. Like, I'm not saying if the Diamondbacks wouldn't have pivoted and DFAed Alec Thomas and if Lordus Guerriel wouldn't have gotten hurt, and if this, this and this also all didn't happen, if Jordan Lawler wouldn't have broken his hand,
Starting point is 00:44:31 that this would be a different team or we would have a different record, right? I'm just saying in general, in general, people seem very impatient already with these young guys for the mistakes like we saw tonight, including you and I. But again, this fan base since the World Series run has had, they've found expectations, I think. And sure. And I don't know that that's necessarily a bad thing. No. I think it leads to added negativity.
Starting point is 00:44:59 And it makes, you know, maybe our jobs a little bit harder from time and time. But it also means that people care. Instead of being apathetic to, oh, the Diamondbacks are going to go ahead and suck again and it doesn't matter. Like, people actually expect the Diamondbacks to be good because we have some really talented players in this organization. And so with that expectation level, I think comes pressure of performing, especially for these young guys when they're given opportunities. I don't think anyone's really out on the Tommy Troyes and the Ryan Walschments yet. But I do think that time is up for the Pave and Smiths of the world. and obviously Zach Gowan,
Starting point is 00:45:36 I think that's been known for a few starts now at this point. But like, Pave and Smith, you know, he's going to continue to bat fifth, be a black hole in the lineup at the DH position, which is just kind of inexcusable in modern baseball. You can't win if your DH is just going to give you nothing.
Starting point is 00:45:52 And he's giving you three pitch strikeouts with runners in scoring position. And it's like, all right, man, like how many opportunities do you need to prove that you are worthy of being a top 10 MLB draft pick. Zach Allen, like, I don't know what other options we really have, but we're just going to continue
Starting point is 00:46:11 putting them out there and letting him give up five, six runs in every single outing until the end of the season. That doesn't feel like a good theory or way of running a baseball team. So, yeah, I think the clock's ticking on some of these guys who have had their time and had their opportunities. The growing pains of having young guys is just bound to happen.
Starting point is 00:46:31 And maybe this team's window isn't there yet, and that's fine. But I'm more comfortable watching this team lose based off of mistakes that rookies and second year players make than making mistakes that, you know, Pave and Smith can't put the ball in play when it's a, and I know Nolan Aeron Otto struck out in the first inning, too, but after 11 pitches, he struck out. And it was a quality A-B, and sometimes you just lose and you tip your cap. Paven Smith strikes out in three pitches with two outs and a runner on third base.
Starting point is 00:47:00 That's inexcusable, especially. taking a fastball right down the middle. And that's the kind of stuff I can't watch anymore. Damon, what I can't watch is this chat anymore because Zabe, who we normally covet, one of our favorite. Zabe Pramukli. Zabe fromukley wanted to know. And she's throwing some wild accusations here.
Starting point is 00:47:23 She says, what's their record since this pod went tarps off? See, the downward spiral started a little bit before that. And I did mention this to Derek yesterday, Derek, and I didn't say this on the podcast, but we have been on a rough go of postgame shows recently. So I'm going to pull up the schedule here and just run it through people for just live on air. We did Marlins today, 8-0 Marlins loss. We did Marlins yesterday, 10-6 Marlins loss. We did not do 5-1 win against the Nationals on Sunday. We didn't do the 6-1 lost the Nationals on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:48:00 we did do the Friday 14 1 loss against the Nationals. The only reason we did a post game show on Dodgers, D-Backs 3-2W could tell Marte walkoff night, was because they specifically won. So Derek and I, if they had lost, would not have done a podcast. We only came back because they won that game. So I'm not even going to count that one. Dodgers 7-0 loss on Wednesday. Dodgers 6-5 loss on Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:48:26 And then D-Backs 4-1 win. So dating back to last Tuesday, we have gone 0 and 1 on post games, 0 and 2, 0 and 3, 0 and 4, 0 and 5, because I'm not counting the emergency podcast. So that's five straight post game shows in a row that we have covered a loss.
Starting point is 00:48:50 I'm ready to talk about something that's bad. That makes me happy instead of this. So Damon, let's take a quick commercial break. I might come back with my shirt off just to prove that this is or to redo the magic or re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-react. reverse the magic? I don't know. My shirt's coming off before the end of this episode. But let's take a quick break. That's a warning to all of you. And we're going to be right back to talk about something that is completely unrelated to the game of baseball. Don't you go anywhere?
Starting point is 00:49:17 You're watching the PH next time in Back Show. Well, one AZ credit union wants to help make me happy because they want me to reach my financial goals. And again, that is something at least that distracts me from this baseball team right now. One AZ is rooted in Arizona and invested in you, their mission is to help Arizona's live their best financial lives, whether that means buying a new car, starting a business or planning for what's next. I could really use a new car. I don't think I've ever purchased. Maybe my, like a Zion XP has been the only car of my lifetime that I ever wanted and went out and bought. Everything else has been a hand me down. But one AZ, they can help me get a new car and they're part of the community. They are proud to be celebrating
Starting point is 00:49:58 75 years of dedicated service to Arizona with branches here in Arizona and an online banking app. you can access your money easier and faster. 1AZ branches are your one-stop shop for all of your financial needs, whether you need one-on-one financial coaching or a document notarized, their friendly associates, ready to help you at branches across the state. Starting point is 00:50:41 Let's talk soccer, baby. Let's talk soccer. This summer, it's all about soccer. Forget baseball. Let's not talk about baseball. We can do that. That's kind of our livelihood. But Nicolub Ultra is the proud sponsor of the U.S.
Starting point is 00:50:51 men's national soccer team. The entire planet will be locked in on the FIFA World Cup. And here in the valley, across the country, we'll all be going crazy for Team USA. Mickelope Ultra brewed right here in America. And they say the same grit that gets U.S. soccer players to the world's biggest stage is brewed here too. Mickelope Ultra is the beer to match the moment, whether you're packed into a bar, watching at a party or yelling at your TV at home, which is something Damon and I both
Starting point is 00:51:17 will definitely be doing at one point. But for every match, every goal, every play on the world's biggest stage, crack open something superior. Mickelope Ultra, proud sponsor of the U.S. men's national soccer team and official beer of the FIFA World Cup 26. Enjoy responsibly. Copyright 2026 Anheuser-Busch, Nickelob Ultra Light Beer, St. Louis, Missouri.
Starting point is 00:51:37 And speaking of the fine folks at Mickelope Ultra, they are going to be one of many delicious drinks that are going to be sponsoring us out for our PHNX crew World Cup Watch Parties presented by Buchanan's, Casa Amigos, Don Julio, and the fine folks at Mickelope Ultra. Thursday, June 11th, tomorrow at 12 p.m., Mexico versus South Africa, watch party at Phillies on Warner. I realized really quickly I will not be in attendance to that because we got a show to do
Starting point is 00:52:08 right around that time but go join the crew out there Derek I realize bad bad news I don't know if I can go to any of them I know right they're there they're during some key times but
Starting point is 00:52:19 Friday June 12th at 6pm USA is taking on Paraguay at Philly Scottsdale so make sure to check out those watch parties at Phillies make sure Max buys you a beer he owes you one in fact there's going to be some great special
Starting point is 00:52:32 so he doesn't have to pay very much. Make sure you tell him that Derek and Damon said that he owes you a beer. He owes you a beer. $100. $4. $1.5.00, $1.00, Stellartois. Visit go p.h and x.com slash events for more details and to R.Svbb.
Starting point is 00:52:49 Well, as you guys know and are aware, if you've been watching the show that we are the leading podcast on Jelly Bean, the Pygmy Hippo. And before we leave, there is no way. This caught me off guard, Derek. I'm not going to lie. I'm not going to let you guys leave on an 8 to nothing night without me. making you smile. And that is because we got ourselves a very, very, very important update. Of course, long before I was in love with jelly bean, the pygmy hippo from right here in Arizona.
Starting point is 00:53:20 Sweet, sweet jelly bean. Daman. I mean, again, we lead all baseball podcasts and jelly bean content. That's for sure. Facts. I was a fan of a different pygmy hippo, a baby pygmy hippo. This one was from social media and many of you if you were ever on Facebook at any time if you are over the age of 35 you've been on Facebook um you may have also come across the same baby pigmy hippo uh his name is mars mars attacks uh i don't know if it's the hippo himself or his trainer that makes up adorable little sounds about him and talks about what a little jerk he can be at times uh is but i thought i thought we were going to fraud check him right now or is that now what we're doing I thought we were going jelly bean over everybody.
Starting point is 00:54:02 Here's the thing, Damon. We have a very complicated situation, and that is apparently these two zoos are attempting to put together an arranged marriage between Jelly Bean and Mars. Jelly Bean is autonomous. Jelly Bean gets to decide these things. Why are we forcing marriage upon Jelly Bean? Yeah, that's disgusting. So new in this world, so young.
Starting point is 00:54:29 So in experience, hasn't had a chance to live. Jellybean hasn't sewed her oats and we're going to lock her into a marriage. What is this? The 1500s? What are we doing here? It's egregious. I won't stand for it, Damon. And I swear to God, if I have to go and attend this wedding myself just to be that person
Starting point is 00:54:52 when the pastor, priest, or whoever's officiating it, looks at the crowd and says, does anybody object to these two baby pygmy hippos joining in solidarity for the rest of their lives, I'll be like, uh, me, sir, because jelly bean deserves better than that. Facts. And this has nothing to do with Mars or his general nature. This mostly has to do with the fact that the Diamondbacks lost tonight. That's all it has to do with. All it has to do.
Starting point is 00:55:27 do it with. We got Mexicano, Mexico in the chat, who observed me at Chino Bandito today. I feel seen. Chino Bandito, one of the best restaurants in all the world. And again, if I'm going to irritate anybody before
Starting point is 00:55:43 I get out of here, I'm going to irritate Max with a free ad. I get the chili Rioeno and the Jade Red chicken, jerk fried rice, black beans. Oh, and make sure that you tell Max that he owes you a beer at one of those worlds. Please make sure.
Starting point is 00:55:57 sure you get Max to buy you a free beer at these World Cup parties. But anyway, I don't want Zabe to throw any more shade at TARPS off or the TARPS off movement. Like I said, that was special. That changed my life. And I will always defend the TARP soft movement. It had nothing to do.
