And now, of course, is a great time to come on out to the ballpark and cheer on the
snakes.
There was a group of fans that were absolutely giving the business to San Francisco
giant starting pitcher, Hayden Burnsong.
And all they were doing was yelling his name at him all night long.
And I loved it so much.
Classic chirp.
I was so into these guys.
It was great to see.
We need more people like that at this ballpark.
and not dudes like that guy that interfered in Monday's game,
which we will talk about later,
but I'm not going to name his name.
He's not going to appear on this show.
We're not going to give him a platform,
and yes, I am going to put him on blast.
But of course, that's negative talk for later.
For now, we have to talk about the Diamondbacks
winning tonight's game by a score of eight to do.
Just a thorough victory on all fronts,
even with some sloppy defense,
even with some mistakes made early.
You felt the Diamondbacks really have a momentum shift,
just there due to a great defensive play
by Alec Thomas to catcher James McCann, who has really done an excellent job in a short amount of time of adapting to this team.
And honestly, just performing well and contributing to this team on both sides of the ball.
Defensively, offensively, James McCann's been great.
The offense is great.
The Diamondbacks improve with this win to 43 and 42.
And you know what that means?
Get Prodomo up that little mounted 500 right now.
I'll never get enough of that.
Just like I don't get enough of our winning song
because that means, of course, we won.
Diamondbacks bats were very hot.
They give Zach Gallen some great run support tonight.
Zach Gallen, tremendous on the mound.
Once again, 10 strikeouts tonight for the milk man.
Try my best to pronounce that correctly so that you guys don't jump all over me.
But yeah, this was an incredible performance.
Overall, 10 strikeouts tonight from Zach Gallen.
Throw that strikeout meter up.
Is that our first, at least since I took back over, first fully,
filled strikeout meter.
I mean, I can think of his other performance in New York where he struck out 13.
It should have been 14.
Think about maybe Erod having one of those.
How do you even fit 13?
You don't.
No on here.
You get two strikeout meters.
You put them back to back.
You put them together butt to butt.
But of course, the diamond backs put a lot of things together tonight themselves offensively.
And that was the key.
Eraldo Perdomo got the scoring started first because of course he does.
He is our risk king.
All hail.
The risk king gets the third.
scoring started in the third inning.
He, RBI single,
scores James McCann.
And again, credit to McCann in that situation.
McCann walks and then he gets on base.
He advances to second on a passball.
And then he motors in on a Geraldo Perdomo RBI single.
James McCann just had it going all night long,
including late in the game when the Diamondbacks had an eight to two lead,
advancing on a single,
I believe it was from Alec Thomas from second to third,
just based on some sloppy play there from the Giants,
and that allowed AT to advance the second.
Just real heads-up play that to be fair,
I guess to be critical, not really to be fair,
I'm not being fair in this situation at all.
I'm being mean.
But to be mean or to be critical,
we're not seeing that out of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
We're not seeing the Diamondbacks do those little things
that in the past we've seen, taking those extra bases.
Obviously, we know Corby and Carroll does.
If Corby and Carol gets a hit, it's a triple or a home run.
That's the only way it works out.
But everybody else, you know, we're just not seeing that advancement.
We're not seeing them take advantage of defensive miscues from the opposing team.
And it was great to see that tonight for the Diamondbacks.
Perdomo, by the way, is currently hitting 337 with runners in scoring position.
So, yeah, he is, in fact, our risk king on this team.
We know everybody else has not been doing that with runners in scoring position.
But the Diamondbacks did get to Giant Starter Hayden Birdsong in the fourth inning.
That's really where things started to turn.
the Diamondbacks way.
Gino and Lordus both walked to lead off the inning on four straight pitches.
And then Jake McCarthy with two on and no out hits a 422 foot bomb to right field to give the
Diamondbacks a four to lead.
That was Jake's second home run of the year.
And it is just so great.
Tanner says it in the chat.
McCarthy hitting for slug has been great.
Jay Cuddy says the McCarthy post game might be the best thing I've seen all year.
I'm sad.
I missed it.
I was sitting in the press room waiting.
for Tori, so I didn't get to see it, but I'll have to check that out. And again, Jake McCarthy
is one of those guys. I asked Tori about it tonight. And honestly, it's just amazing that with the
losses that this team has had. I don't know if another team has had this many losses to their
personnel to their roster and have been able to overcome it the way the Diamondbacks have.
They find James McCann here, who is, again, just kind of a godsend for this team who is desperately
need in need of a second catcher.
You could credit maybe Zach Gallen's performance tonight a bit for McCann calling
the pitches behind the plate.
Gallen did give him that credit.
But just overall, this was one of those games where you really feel like this,
everything clicked for this team, everything came together.
And they got contributions from those replacement players like McCarthy,
like McCann, the mix, if you will, to come up and fill in the gaps for the guys
that are missing like Corbyn Carroll.
and Gabi El Gabriel Moreno.
The bat stayed hot in this game.
That wasn't just it for the Diamondbacks in the fifth inning.
In the fifth inning, Gino reaches on a pass ball.
After he struck out, the strikeout would have ended the inning.
There were two outs before Gino struck out.
He strikes out.
The ball passes.
He makes it the first.
Instead, Lordus Gurriel, then homers for the second night in a row.
It was a two-run blast that pushed the lead at that point to six to two.
Then in the sixth inning, the Diamondbacks get two more.
more bombs. Randall Gritchick, aka, as we call him around here, we standel Gritchick. He hit a
453 foot shot to left center. And I thought, Damon, I was like, this has to be one of Gritch's
longest home runs ever. No, not the case. Apparently Randall Gritchick has the longest
home run, I believe in Royals, not as a Royal. He was a Cardinal at the time, but at the Royal Stadium,
Coffman Stadium history. He hit one 478 feet there, which is just a monster.
shot but so was this one.
Just a powerful, powerful man.
He is.
With dad strength.
The dad strength makes him even stronger.
I'm surprised this one didn't go 500 feet.
By the way, MLB proceeded to say something about that this one got hit out to the desert.
Can we explain to them that Jefferson is a street and that like outside of the windows of
Chase Field isn't, you know, cacti and rattlesnakes and, you know, desert, desert stones and
whatnot.
But anyway, uh, Diamondbacks, again, got a lot of office.
tonight. Gritchick and James McCann go back to back. Home runs there in the sixth inning,
and they pushed the lead to eight to two, which is exactly what the score stands at.
Jay Cuddy is calling him Randall, the Vandal, and I kind of like that. And yes,
Elise, we do standle Randall. The defense was also pretty good, even though it wasn't great early.
In the second inning, one of the worst defensive plays. I think I've seen this team make all year long.
just missing the cutoff man having the ball just kind of roll in allowing a runner to take third base
because gino showed no no kind of i don't know gumption to go try to get the ball and tag him
but after that the defense did get much better for the diamondbacks in the third inning it felt
like everything changed with a raphael devers where raphael devers finally didn't strike out
he struck out seven times in a row including every bat in the series up until
the third inning when he finally doubled with two outs.
Wilmer Flores then singled with Devers on second.
Devers tried to score at home plate.
And Alec Thomas made one of the best goddamn throws.
I've seen an outfielder for the Diamondbacks make.
Maybe ever.
I don't know.
This team isn't known for really making these kind of throws.
And Alec Thomas just hit him with a laser at home plate.
I think we do, if we have it yet, do we have Tori talking about that yet, Damon?
man you're putting me in a bad spot here Derek
you're in the middle of doing it I apologize but I mean you waited until the
second I started doing it give me a second he's multitasking
things happen fast around here my apologies on Derek I think we're ready for
if you want to hear Tori Lavolo talking about Alec Thomas's throw from from
center field here we go okay yeah that was that was a that was a big play too as well so
you're looking for defensive plays that help you win the three out, the half inning.
And that one, I felt like had they scored that run, it would have been a totally different scenario.
And it was just a zero, a strike right to McCann, did a great job of kind of corraling the ball and making a tag.
But a lot went into it.
AT close on the ball and got rid of it in a hurry.
And it was a definite momentum changer for sure.
Those are the little things that we do defensively to help us win games.
it was a momentum shifter and you could feel it in the stadium you really did you felt like if the diamondbacks go down three nothing at that point that things kind of look bleak and the zack gallon outing suddenly turns into yet another zat gallon outing where yeah he struck out some guys yeah he gave them some length but ultimately he allowed three four five runs and didn't give the team a real good chance to win instead that run gets gunned down at home plate the diamondbacks keep it two to nothing they have
immediately scored another run in the following inning,
and then shortly after they take the lead on Jake McCarthy's three-run, home run.
But the defense, again, got to give a lot of credit to Alec Thomas for that play.
That play single-handedly felt like it changed this game.
Jake McCarthy also made a great snag in the fourth inning to kind of rob a line out there of Dominic Smith.
So you really saw defensively this team just start to click once that play on Devers had been made at home.
plate. But you may have that a bad night or a bad day, but at least you didn't have as bad
of a day as Patrick Bailey did behind the home plate for the Giants tonight. Your day could not have
been worse than Patrick Bailey's behind home plate for the Giants. His past balls led to three
runs scoring for the Diamondbacks. And again, you might say three runs in an eight to two game.
Yeah, the Diamondbacks still win five to two. However, I feel like these were as important.
important in changing the momentum as that defensive play that Alec Thomas made there.
McCann advanced, like I said earlier, to scoring position and then scores on a Geraldo
Prodomo RBI single, which he wouldn't have scored if he wouldn't have been able to advance on that
pass ball.
And then Gino, again, strikes out in the fifth inning.
Instead of that being the final out of the inning and ending the fifth, Gino makes it the first.
Lourdes hits a two-run bomb, and the Diamondbacks lead goes up to six.
six to two so Derek I need to go back to something here for a second how could how could uh our guy
Patrick Bailey possibly have had three pass balls tonight Giants fans told me he was better than
gabby I don't know I mean he has an average under 200 yeah he can't get to keep the ball from
going past him he can't run runners really what are we doing with this guy I feel like in a in a weird
way, Gabby's somewhat, and I don't want to say lack of development, because I think that's a little
strong, but his lack of like, maybe like, you know, being like a trampoline to being a star
type of player has not happened.
And that has caused me to not be able to get off enough Patrick Bailey tweets on Twitter.
And I just think that that's something that we should all be sad about because there's
something there.
Like, we could be making fun of Giants fans forever.
I know you could for sure.
Yeah.
I know you have it in you for sure.
Marino in the chat says when Gabby is back, Herrera goes, right?
I don't know.
I don't know the answer to that.
I hope so.
I want to say that to be.
They're so loyal to their guys, man.
And they love Jose Herrera.
And Tori said that pregame tonight, right?
Tori talked about how loyal he is to his guys because he said at the end of the day,
he's not the one that makes the decisions about who is on the roster and who isn't on the roster.
So Tori is loyal to his guys until they're not on his roster anymore.
And he's still loyal to them even when they're in Reno or elsewhere.
But Tori believes, and he said this, I believe in them until they are not on the roster any longer.
And I'm sure he still believes in them after that.
But the point being is that like Tori's job, which is a difficult one at times when players aren't doing their jobs, is to believe in all of these guys.
And that's the reason why I understand, I understand how,
frustrated people can get with his managing, but I also understand that Tori has a limited set
of tools available to him so that he can utilize them. And again, with the bullpen specifically,
the thing that really sucks is what we saw at one point during the season is that Tori kind
of bunched his best bullpen arms up in one group and then had the other guys that were available
when those guys had been used too much. And then he tried to like split it up and kind of have it be
a little bit more balanced. That's honestly, the other guys is a perfect analogy, Derek, because it's
just as if the rock and Sam
Jackson are, you know, the
cops of the city that are going through
saving the New York City
and then they aim for the bushes.
And who are our guys that aim for the bushes?
Who's our dancing in Highsmith?
Oh, AJ Puck and Justin
Martinez. They aim for the bushes.
They're dead now. They laid splat
dead on the floor and now we're left
with the other guys and it's Shelby Miller
and Kyle Backus. Can they
save the day? I have so much
meme photoshopping to do with
just that little bit you gave me. I'm going to be so busy tomorrow. You gave me so much
work to do tomorrow. Damon, I hate you. All right. Notable performances here by the Diamondbacks,
Perdomo, two for five tonight with that RBI got the scoring going. Gino Suarez,
he had two runs scored and he was on base. He had a walk and then he also got on base,
even though he struck out. Let's see. Louris Gurriel Jr. was one for three tonight with that
home run. He had two RBI. Randall Gritchick, two for four. He had that solo home run as well.
and then James McCann, one for two tonight, two runs scored, two walks,
finds a way to get on base, finds a way to score runs.
This was just a great performance overall from this team offensively, especially.
We know the Giants have really been struggling,
so as excited as I want to get about the Diamondbacks already winning the first two games of this series,
this is a team right now in the Giants that is spiraling.
And honestly, at least for the time being that Devers Edition doesn't look very good,
isn't really helping this offense out a ton.
Willie Domas, who's been struggling,
he had a home run tonight,
solo home run off of Zach Gowan.
And in fact, that was the Gowan's only earned run allowed tonight.
But we are going to talk about Zach
and the incredible evening he had on the other side of this break.
So don't you guys go anywhere?
You're watching the P.HNX Diamondback show.

Derek, I don't know if you caught the postgame.
Jake McCarthy interview, did it make its way up to the press box?
I know you were doing a lot of work.
That's why I was saying a little earlier.
I was down actually in the press room waiting for Tori, so I did not get a chance to see that.
Did you have any updates from that?
Yeah, basically just at the last question, I believe Todd asked Jake something to the effect of,
what do you say to the people that, you know, don't believe in you guys?
And Jake responded with, they don't know S.H.
IT and then said it again, live on air, just cursing up a storm.
And then Todd goes, well, we apologize for that one.
Obviously, you know, Jake very much in the moment.
But you got to love that type of intensity from Jake, don't you?
I'm going to go run through a wall real fast.
Can I go, can I just go run through this wall, I'm ready.
That's what I said.
Baseball is stupid.
It doesn't make any sense.
No matter what, you can't look at a three and a half game lead, four game
And trust me, I just called the season yesterday or on Monday, right?
That was Monday was yesterday.
These days, they all run together for me.
But let me tell you, this series was extremely important.
The Diamondbacks needed to have a good showing.
Again, the Giants are struggling team.
So I don't think anybody right now is going to take these wins as being like the Diamondbacks are back.
You know, whatever.
I will say the Marlins are very hot team.
They're continuing their streak.
I believe they have the longest winning streak in baseball right now at eight games.
games. So I know the Diamondbacks were part of that. I know they got swept by the Marlins,
but sometimes in baseball in life, you just caught a team that was playing better baseball than
you. The Diamondbacks had a lead in every single one of those games and should have won them,
but they didn't. And again, it's because this Marlins team right now is playing the kind of baseball
that this Diamondbacks team played back in 2023 that led them to the World Series, right? But
it doesn't mean that this Diamondbacks team is incapable or this roster isn't talented
enough to do that. And you got to give credit where credit is due.
There is no more depth. There's no more organizational depth. But the organizational depth that
Mike Hazen stacked for this team, as Tori talked about tonight, multiple layers here allows
this team to still be competitive despite all of the losses to personnel that they've experienced.
I don't know what's going to happen. I mean, Mike Hazen was just on a podcast today talking about
still wanting to be buyers. And I don't know, I don't know. I don't know.
how much the team has to do in order to get that reinforced,
but I will say based on the losses that we've seen this year,
based on the situational baseball that we've experienced,
you can't help but feel like if the Diamondbacks were able to add some pieces to their bullpen
that you could count on that would solidify this bullpen and just bring some consistency here
that this team couldn't go on a run.
And that run could involve a playoff run.
It could involve them getting hot at the right time and going on a run.
in the playoffs. I don't know though. And I mean, I'm just, I'm really glad I'm not in my
case in shoes right now because this is a very difficult decision. And it's literally a fork in
the road for the Diamondbacks as an organization it feels like, right? Like you can stay,
you can play hard, you can try to compete this year. And deep down inside, I think we all feel
like they have most of the pieces it takes to be a contender. At least when you look at what this
offense has been able to do this year, it's hard to say that this team isn't a contender
offensively, they're right up there with the Dodgers and the Cubs and the Yankees as the best,
one of the best offenses in baseball.
And tonight just kind of reemphasize that, right?
But really what it's about is pitching and really what it's about is Zach Gallen.
And Zach Gallen tonight looked like the Zach Gallen that we know, that we love, that we want to see
on the mound every five days, quite frankly.
And it seemed like it wasn't going to be that, right?
Early on, it seemed like it was going to be another rough outing for Zach at Chase Field.
Oh, the takes were flying early on.
on Zach. Well, it's that second inning, right? After allowing only one hit. Yeah, get him off my team. Yeah, get him off my team. I want him traded. He's not going to get traded because he has no trade value. Gallin gives up a solo home run in the second inning to William Adomas with one out. And then, of course, he gives up a double to Daniel Johnson who goes on to score on a Patrick Bailey ground out in the most egregious defensive situation. I think I've seen from this team earlier. I talked about it earlier. But after that, especially after that play by.
Alec Thomas and the wonderful tag by James McCann.
Gallen really did an excellent job of locking it down.
He just, it's like that defensive play rejuvenated him.
And we've seen it go the other way where the Diamondbacks make a miscue defensively.
And you just see the air kind of let out of Gallin's balloon.
You know what I mean?
Like he just kind of, you can see his body language.
You can see in his demeanor and his facial expressions that he is so disappointed
that his teammates did not do a better job.
of getting that ball just now and now I have to throw more pitches and now like you can almost see
Zach have the same attitude we have as fans like oh crap here we go this is where things are going to
turn and like Zach looks like that at times when things don't go his way behind him but uh I mean it's
frustration and it's been a frustrating season but after that again Gallin sat down I believe it was
the next six batters in order including striking out the side in the fifth inning and at that point
it just looked like Gallen was unstoppable.
His fastball velo was up and his knuckle curve velo was down.
So it kind of felt like maybe that combination of his, you know, of his two best pitches kind of being a little bit more opposite.
Maybe that change of speed, maybe that change of a velo a little bit for the knuckle curve slowing down.
Maybe that helped with his fastball because that gallon was getting a lot of swing and miss tonight.
we have a image of his pitch chart and what you'll see here is Zach mostly kept up to that fastball high in the zone and the knuckle curve down low.
The knuckle curve is the purple dots you see on your screen.
The red dots are the fast forcing fastball.
I mean, Zach referenced, you know, kind of some of his other secondary stuff not really working tonight, his cutter, his slider, that kind of stuff.
but overall, I think Zach just did a tremendous job here of kind of changing speeds on pictures
and relying on those two pitches.
But obviously it was his four-seem fastball.
His four-seem fastball was just up a tick.
It maxed out at 95 miles an hour was averaging at what it's averaged all year long.
It was his exact average for the season at 93.2 miles per hour.
He just hit a max Velo a little bit higher.
But he got 16 whiffs.
Eight of those were on his knuckle curve.
Five were on his fastball.
And really, that was where his bread and butter was tonight.
And I know we have more from the clubhouse.
Damon, what do we got?
Yeah, we got Tori Lovolo on Zach Allen's performance tonight.
Yeah, let's hear from Tori on what he thought about his ace.
I worry less when I see somebody prepare the way he does.
I worry less when I see everybody that or him specifically and then everybody around him has a,
I care a lot attitude.
We got to have an I care a lot attitude when we walk into this clubhouse.
And he is very engaged and frustrated by the idea that he hasn't gone out there and had typical Zach outings as consistently as he has.
So I wasn't worried because I felt strongly with his work ethic, dedication, and the perfectionist mentality that he was going to figure this out.
I'm just, you know, I'm glad that it happened tonight.
And I want to continue.
I think he gets on a role as good as anybody and, you know, the sky's the limit with him.
I worry less also because he's been really good and he knows what it takes,
he knows what it takes to be good and go out there and not get carried away with one
good inning or two good innings.
He wants to have a good outing and build,
is on top of one another.
So I'm concerned clearly because I care about the players.
I always want to see him be successful.
But, you know, Zach's going to be fine.
Today was a great, great day for him.
Obviously, you want to see Zach put together multiple starts in order for you to really
just feel better about him, right? One start against a struggling Giants offense, which has been
very bad lately, is not enough for people to completely believe in Zach Gallen once again.
I believe one of the comments in our chat, Dom Smith, I believe it was, said that he was ready to
still trade, or not, excuse me, not him, Knights, Knights, there we go, Knights 23, you passed it,
said, I still say we trade him for the little value he has. Well, Knights, 23,
three, as I discussed yesterday, I will ask you, who do you have pitch on your fifth day if
Zach Gallen isn't on the roster? And after you saw him pitch the way he did tonight,
do you really feel like getting rid of him for nothing, saying that the little value he has?
I don't believe if the Diamondbacks traded Zach Gallen, even if he didn't turn things around,
that Zach Gallen would be a pitcher that you get nothing for. There are far too many people that believe
in Zach Gallen. And Zach Gallen needs to learn, I think, to believe in himself just a little bit.
fact, one of the things James McCann said tonight in the clubhouse really resonated with me for
Zach. Damon, I believe we have it. It's James McCann talking about Zach. What he said to him and how he
feels about Zach as a pitcher. I've had to stand the box and face him as a hitter and it's not a
fun of that I'm trying to get across to him is just because the first half maybe hasn't gone
the way that the other five years just clear has.
Hitters aren't racing.
He's not funny.
I'm starting to fall in love with James McCann.
I really am.
I mean, don't get me wrong.
Those huge arms don't definitely, they don't hurt.
But I will say that with him looking at some,
I mean, this is a guy that's been on the team for a little over a week, right?
Not only has he contributed in huge ways offensively,
but Zach Gallen talked tonight about McCann and how he called its game, basically how well they work together.
I think that's impressive.
I mean, McCann talked about, you know, obviously giving Corbyn Burns a call and getting the lowdown on the pitching staff.
I'm sure that helped, especially considering Damon, that they could talk to each other freely, right?
Corbyn Burns doesn't have to worry with someone like James McCann that's a friend and now a teammate about holding back on what he's saying.
so he can really just air his true feelings about guys that he hasn't known for very long,
but has had a chance to observe.
Corbyn Burns knows a lot about the game of baseball.
I'm sure that a lot of what he relayed to James McCann was very useful.
And now we're seeing McCann be able to call some really good games.
And, you know, again, tonight him and Zach Gallen just worked extremely well.
We have more here from Gallen on his relationship with McCann and the game that he called tonight behind the plate.
Yeah, he called most a game.
I think the only, I called a pitch to Adomas.
In the bat that he flew out to right, I think.
I wanted to go in.
Just give him a little different look.
But yeah, I mean, I threw a lot of hundred.
Pitches and I, I think he called 99 of them.
Yeah, I don't remember shaking off if I did a couple times, but nothing, nothing crazy.
Is that typical?
Like, you know, or have you been calling me a higher percentage with some of the other catchers?
No, not necessarily.
Really, I think it's kind of been a little bit of back and forth.
I feel like one of my best, the coaches and I are on the same page for the most part.
So having a not necessarily, you know, call, you know, pitches for me in a perfect world.
I call maybe 10 a game on something that I'm seeing or feeling.
But for the most part, I like to trust what they're seeing back there,
how everything's moving, how they, you know, feel that hitters are interacting,
where they are in the box, what they're, you know, it's hard for me to tell.
beat away it's a little bit easier for the guy standing 18 inches from him i mean Zach again even his
i it's so weird to say this probably i probably should keep this one to myself but even his postgame
conference felt more confident right like everything about zach felt just a little bit more like
the Zach that we've come to know and i think sometimes when zach is asked after a game about like
what's what's going on he doesn't he doesn't necessarily know but he does do an excellent job at
going back and watching footage and doing things to find out what he's doing wrong.
He was asked tonight a little bit.
I don't think we have this clip,
but he was asked about,
you know,
what he's been doing differently.
And,
and,
you know,
again,
it's,
he wants to keep it to himself for the most part.
But again,
I think some of the little things that he's been doing incorrectly and maybe,
you know,
maybe having his pitches,
you know,
we talked about his knuckle curve and his fastball kind of landing in a,
in a similar spot and not having too much of a difference to
them you know there there's things like that that uh i feel like he maybe has worked on i think mccann
called a great game behind the plate i think it was just a combination of plenty of factors in this
particular one but uh again 10 strikeouts tonight for zach he went seven innings gave up five hits
two runs one of them earned no walks and again those 10k so great job tonight by zack gallon
and great job overall by this team um Tori had some more to say i don't think we played this one yet
Damon. I'm getting old, but I talked to Tori about the guys like McCann stepping up, guys like
Ryan Nelson, guys like Jake McCarthy, again, their depth is gone. The Diamondbacks don't have
depth, but yet they still have found themselves in a position after losing as many players
as they've lost to injury this season, still competing here, still, still, you know,
still making you believe that this team could go on a run and at least be in the hunt for one of
these wild card spots as the postseason comes along. And again, here was what Tori had to say about
the depths stepping up. This was clearly a day that was built around Zach Allen and what he did and the way
he set the tone for us. He got very stubborn after a couple of runs in the second there. I know we
misplayed a ball that led to the extra run, but from that point forward, it was it was aggressive
stuff in the zone. He got into a really good rhythm with McCann. And it seemed like there was a lot
of swing and miss with not only the fastball in the zone, but some secondary stuff.
So I think it did a great job of challenging hitters and just getting better as the night
went on.
Offensively, clearly the biggest blow was the McCarthy 3-run home run.
After, you know, we built an inning, had a couple runners on base, potentially in a bun
situation, and there was no bun thought for me.
I don't think there was any blunt thought for him, but he stood up there and he squared up in
baseball and help us take the lead. But, you know, the Gritchick, Guriel, and McCann swings were also
had a huge impact on this game. But I was just proud of the way the guys just stood up there,
held their ground, focused, and got the job done, all behind Zach and what he did.
That was Tori on Zach and the overall performance tonight from the team. Here's Tori talking about
those players that have stepped up in the absence of the injured guys.
This was clearly, yeah, I think, like I said,
we're excited about that depth that's coming up.
Jake is a good baseball player.
He just, he got into a little bit of a rut.
And, you know, for the first 55, 60 outbats,
it was a challenge for him.
But he's coming out at the other side.
He's just, he's a mentally tough player.
And I'm glad he's up here doing what he's doing.
But the, James McCann pick up was a great pickup.
That's what we're doing here.
I think our front office is always in search.
of a player that could step in here in the absence of somebody that's hurt and help us.
And, you know, it was a good pickup.
When I'm watching him go out there and do the things that I just mentioned and have the abatities have,
and this was a very strong pickup.
So we're built for these tough moments.
I think we're two or three layers into it, though, a little deeper than we have been in years past,
but I think we're holding our ground.
I'm proud of our guys.
I agree.
And I'm proud of them, too.
And I know that this season has been extremely disappointed.
for everybody in that clubhouse.
I know that the guys that are injured,
definitely wish they weren't.
I know that it's easy to want to place blame on everybody.
And everybody has,
I mean,
I saw tonight on Twitter,
my guy Jack Summers arguing with people
about the medical staff being at fault.
Like there are so many things here
that are outrageous when it comes to trying to place blame
for this season,
right?
But speaking of it,
please play white,
but later in the line.
Well,
I'll explain that to you, Killer Rex.
That's because Josh Naylor was cleared by the medical staff,
but Tori Lavallo didn't want to further any potential injuries for Josh Naylor
and lose him for a significant amount of time.
So as he explained pregame, Tori's philosophy or his way of approaching this
is to get the clearance from Josh Naylor or get the clearance from the medical staff
and then check in with Josh to see how he was feeling.
I was present right in front of them for that conversation,
and Josh Naylor expressed to Tori that he was.
still experiencing that stiffness in his neck after taking some swings and after taking some
grounders. So Tori decided not to aggravate it or make it go any further and scratched him from the
lineup. He also said here after the game that he plans on doing the exact same thing tomorrow.
And if for some reason, Naylor also experiences that sniffness will see something similar.
Here's what Tori had to say about Josh Naylor and pulling him from the lineup.
Yeah, I think like I said, we're excited about that depth that's coming up.
Jake is a good baseball player. He just got into a little
bit of a rut. Yeah, Nailer was just not comfortable through the course of his entire swing.
It's getting very close. I'm going to send out the lineup and I'll let you know that he's most
likely going to be in it tomorrow. I feel much better about today than I did last night when I
was thinking he could play today. But it's just that final movement in the head turn as he's locking
into the pitcher and starting his swing. It just wasn't right for him. So we're going to make sure it's
right before we put him in there.
But this is nothing that's going to hinder him.
I think as soon as he gets back on the field,
you're going to see him going full tilt again.
I want an explanation or I want an answer.
I want there to be somebody to blame all of these injuries on.
Trust me, I want that.
I love that.
I love confrontation.
I love blaming a guy.
You know, I mean, there's a lot of things that I've thought about.
There's a lot of things I haven't expressed on this show.
Because, again, I feel like it's a bit reckless to just throw out things about, you know,
about coaches and players and medical staff and things like that.
What I will say is that overall the Diamondbacks were pretty lucky,
believe it or not, in their past with stints on,
with Tommy John surgery and major losses like they've experienced.
This was just the year that it really is caught up with them.
And again, it's kind of similar to a lot of things with the Diamondbacks, right?
They're just, they're not the same team that we've seen in the past.
So we don't know how to deal with this.
And when you have new coaches come in, the way that Brian Larkin, or excuse me,
Sean Larkin and Brian Kaplan have come in, you find it easy when the things that used to work
aren't working anymore to blame it on those guys.
Sean Larkin gets the blame for how poorly the defense has been playing for some of the
mistakes on the base path, the Diamondbacks been making.
Obviously, Kaplan gets a lot of the blame for the injuries to the starting pitchers and the
struggles that guys like Zach Gowland and Brandon Fought have been experiencing.
I can't sit here and confidently tell you that it's not those.
coach's fault, but I also cannot sit here and confidently blame the Diamondback
struggles or especially the injuries on anybody, but just bad luck and the way that sports
sometimes goes.
I mean, we just saw an NBA playoff situation where the best players in the NBA, all of
them had, anybody that had the number zero on their chest experience a ruptured Achilles,
right?
Isn't that the way it went?
So it's like sometimes sports are awful.
sometimes you can't really explain the coincidences there.
You can't explain things happening to a team like what has happened to the Diamondbacks this year with injuries.
However, what you can do is sit here and give credit where credit is due to guys like Jake McCarthy who have stepped up in Cormond Carroll's absence and especially James McCann for the way he's played in a very short amount of time.
This is a guy that knows he's most likely going to get cut from this team once Gabriel Moreno returns, which to some of you seems egregious.
and to me who just said, I just said a little while ago I'm in love with him, that I don't want that to happen either.
Derek's already like doodling Derek plus James in his notebook.
Look, I just wouldn't have to change my initials.
That's all I was telling you.
I just said I would still be DM and I wouldn't have to go out and get a bunch of new monogram stuff.
That's all I told you.
And I told you that in confidence.
I didn't expect you to tell people on the show.
Is it his massive arms or his dashingly good looks?
I can't explain it.
I can't explain it.
I'm just kind of flustered in his presence.
That's all.
He's a large man.
He's a very large man.
Right.
I get it.
I'm an average height guy, and I understand why women have never been attracted to me, right?
It's the height of that man.
It was very, it's just massive guy.
Anyway, do we have any more from James McCann in the clubhouse since we're talking about him?
Yeah, we do have James McCann on catching Zach Allen for the second time tonight
and just their chemistry together.
I think we, I think I just kind of do each other a little better.
We're maybe on the same page.
quicker tonight.
And I thought his execution was really good throughout tonight.
I think if you look back at the game in Chicago, we made a couple of mistakes.
Tonight, the mistakes were limited.
Well, and I'll tell you this much, it's one of those things where McCann, I don't know what his future holds with this team.
But in a short amount of time, you feel like he is, like, leading by example and his experience is one of those missing factors from this team right now.
Right. I know that there are other guys on this team that have been in baseball for a long time.
Gino Svarez, another one of those guys. He's a guy that also has been attributed to be a big clubhouse guy and somebody who everybody really, really likes and feels like a leader out there.
But I don't know. McCann, he's a catchers just do this kind of stuff, right, where they just come in and they feel like they got to know the personnel.
They got to get to know everybody. They got to know everything about everybody.
and like it really does feel like he has in a very short amount of time at least brought some stability to this team and it really felt like he was a big reason why Zach Gallen had the night he had and we have a little bit more here from Zach Gallen on his night here's what Zach Gallen had to say about his overall performance yeah man I felt like everything was working can and I got on the same page pretty early you know I mean with the guy like that's been around a while you know he's had a lot of experiences calling him
He was calling some of the best,
which trusted in, you know, his preparation
and just kind of the fingers he was split down
or, I guess I should say the buttons he was hit on H-Com,
but, yeah, just, I feel like way to everything.
In most spots, a couple of the damage
just is on, you know, the cards are backed up,
and then the Adama's home,
just kind of slyer just stayed up there.
But, yeah, for the most part, I feel like we're on the same page
and, you know, we're mixing pretty well.
And I actually, for once, I actually agree,
with Killorex, which is not, that's not good. That's never good when me and Killar Rex are agreeing.
But Killer X says one good start. Wow. I'm not doing the wow thing. That's unnecessary. But he says,
do it for three starts in a row. Then I'll be impressed. I agree with that. I do think that, again,
this is a struggling Giants team. So pump the brakes. Just a little bit on Zach Gowling getting 10
strikeouts and having a seven inning outing. It's a good, it's a good outing. And you would like to see him
put together two or three more, especially with how badly he struggled in the month of June. And, and honestly,
the entire first half.
And Zach Allen knows he struggled in the first half.
McCann brought it up to him.
And here's Zach talking about how bad his first half actually it was.
Yeah, obviously tough.
You know, this game, this game of home to be for sure.
That's, that's, there's no secret about that.
I've just been kind of trying to plug away,
doing what I know I can do in terms of just a process and, you know,
trying to get better.
I mean, I think this year would have started differently.
I still probably would be, you know, trying to grind and evolve and keep getting better.
But, you know, just this game is a game of, you know, ebbs and flows.
And it can't really necessarily ride the way you've got to just kind of stay on top of it and just keep plugging away.
Keep trying to make pitches, you know, at some point the title turn.
Well, the tide kind of turned for him a little bit tonight.
And for that reason, we are giving Zach Gallen the King Snake.
Zach Gallen, seven innings pitch, two hits allowed, 10 strikeouts,
no walks, just a solid overall pitching performance here from Gallin, probably a second best of the year.
And again, me and Killer Rex both would like to see him do it a couple of more times in a row.
Meanwhile, the bullpen got a rest tonight.
It was Disco Inferno Night and Anthony Descofani two innings pitched.
One hit allowed two strikeouts for him.
He wrapped the game up after Zach Gallen's seven inning night.
So a great job of resting the bullpen, which very much needs it.
allows them to come out strong for the final two games of this series with the Giants.
Diamondbacks just need one more win to win the series, but man, it would be great to sweep a struggling Giants team after the, you know, sweep at the hands of the Marlins.
Now, I'm allowed to say that because Diamondbacks aren't one game away from a sweep, I think.
Is that put me in the clear?
I don't know. Damon refuses to be a part of any of this, but what we're going to do is take a quick break.
And on the other side of this break, we're going to talk a little bit more about the numbers from this game.
and then I'm going to scream about the fan interfering in Monday's game.
So don't you go anywhere you're watching the PHA next time and back show.

Let's take a look at the numbers presented by our friends
at Desert Financial.
Of course, credit union.
Great people that got me started on my home ownership journey.
Diamondbacks win this one by a score of eight to do.
They out hit the Giants nine to six.
Diamondbacks were two for seven with runners in scoring position.
Meanwhile, the Giants were one for six.
Right now the extra base hits.
The Diamondbacks had five extra base hits, including four home runs.
Gridchick.
We had McCann.
We have who else hit home runs tonight, Damon?
We also had Jake McCarthy's three home run home run.
And then we got a solo home run from Lord.
Oh, no, the two-run home run from Lourdes.
Thank you.
Thank you.
See, I don't have a good memory.
I'm once again proving how old I am.
Expected batting average there, 208 for the Giants, 240 for the Diamondbacks.
No home runs or one home run there from the Diamondbacks.
Willie Adomis's home run off that gallon.
But two, actually, I believe.
Was it two?
It might have even been.
Yeah, yeah.
You're right.
No.
No, you're right.
You're right.
It was two doubles off gallon and a home run off of gallon.
That's right.
But again, this is a very important stretch for multiple.
reasons. Is it enough? Is it too little too late? I don't know. I can't tell you that. I don't really
feel like it is because baseball is what it is. Suddenly the Marlins are the hottest team in baseball, right? So
it's not hard. It's not hard to imagine that the Diamondbacks could do that. They have big tests here
before the All-Star break. Not only do they have these two more games against the Giants, but they
still have a three-game series against the Padres. And then I believe they wrap things up against
the Los Angeles Angels. There is no real, there's no off day between now and the All-Star break.
for the Diamondbacks.
They played 17 games straight in a row.
And it's kind of one of those things that maybe it's good for them.
Maybe if they can get on a roll here against the Giants that will carry over to future series.
But let's take a look at the N Hell West, also known as the drunken orgy of violence,
which I don't know how drunken it is anymore.
It might be a little less drunken that it's been in the past.
Ever since we gave it that moniker, it's become pretty mid.
It's like they didn't like that.
So they all sobered up.
And then the Dodgers just kept parties.
You know what I mean?
Like, that's kind of what if the Rockies are are pissed drunk, Derek.
I completely disagree with you.
The Rockies don't know where they are.
They don't know their own name.
The Rockies need a lift so that they can get to the next bar.
You know what I mean?
Like they're taking lifts from one bar to another.
The Rockies, Derek, are that person that when you're out at the bar that's asking you to buy them
an Uber because their phone died.
They're so drunk and their phone died and they're walking up to you and they're like,
you can get me home?
That's how bad the Rockies are.
I will say that the Dodgers just continue to win every baseball game.
But the rest of the division is very attainable.
Right.
And that's all we need to worry about.
I said this.
True.
Got to stay part of the pack, right?
And the Dodgers aren't staying part of the pack,
but at least we're staying here kind of just a step or two behind the Padres and the Giants.
And honestly, the Diamondbacks find a way to do the S thing to the Giants.
They could find themselves with a better record.
then the Giants after this series is over, which is just kind of crazy to think,
especially how bad things felt after that Marlin series.
But the Diamondbacks do have a great chance here to make up some ground.
And now we have, the piece of Yoshi says the Rockies still don't have 20 wins.
Yeah, it's kind of wild.
It is kind of wild.
It's July 1st, by the way, in case you didn't know what the date was.
But we are going to take a really quick break.
And then on the other side of this break, I'm going to scream and yell there about the fan interference call.

So don't you go anywhere? We're going to take a quick break. You're watching the PHA next time and back show.

Oh, Damon, I don't know what people are doing here when it comes to the fan interference the other night.
but from what I've seen, this gentleman has gotten way too much press.
I am not going to use his name, even though I know what it is,
nor am I going to tell you where to go find the interviews that featured him.
What I will say is, as many of you know, on Monday night,
a fan interfered with a ball.
It was hit from Christian Koss, third baseman of the Giants.
It went to left field.
Tim Tawa attempted to make a play on it.
And this fan interfered with it.
Initially, it was called a home run.
Then it was reversed to an out due to fan.
Then it was reversed after Bob Melden challenged it to a ground rule double due to fan interference.
This fan was then ejected from Chase Field.
It turns out that eagle-eyed viewers went around and they noticed that this was the same guy that has interfered in Diamondbacks games for a very long time.
In fact, there were five occasions found on video of this gentleman interfering in calls for home runs where the call was changed in some way due to his interference, whether it was ruled and out.
whether it was rule to ground, rule double, whether it was changed to a home run, whatever the case may be, this man has interfered in several different games.
And he's just kind of been a menace out there.
He personally admitted to more.
He said in the interviews that he did, 10, that he's done this 10 times.
Zoe Z in the chat says, let's be real, he kind of saved us.
Now, I will say, I don't disagree with that.
based on what we all saw from the video,
I think we can all agree that that home run
was either going to be a home run,
a triple, something stupid.
Tawa was going to attempt to make a play on it.
Maybe he doesn't get it,
bounces off the wall.
Maybe it stays in play.
Maybe it bounces over the wall.
I don't really know what the outcome is
because we don't live in that alternate reality.
As Tori said today,
let the players make the play, right?
That's what he wants to see.
He really didn't have a comment about it.
Otherwise, because he really hadn't heard much.
The Diamondbacks announced today that he
was an advantage member and they have revoked his advantage membership for 2025.
He's also been banned from Chase Field for 2025 and he can resubmit to prove that he's
been a good boy, I guess, after the season and come back maybe for 2026.
What I can't stand is the way that this has been paraded around like he is some sort of hero.
I can't stand that this guy is out there like he has a book.
he's pushing. He has all sorts of crap that he's on, like an agenda where he's using these
appearances on local media for, you know, to promote himself and, and everybody's just
kind of eating it up. Meanwhile, you fans very much do not want to see this guy. I've seen the
reaction to this. I've seen how people are speaking. And I completely am with you. Now,
I was talking with a friend today. And one thing we agreed on is that if you are going to have this
gentlemen, come on your show.
Why are you not challenging him?
Why are you not asking him why he thinks that he's allowed to do this dumb crap?
Why are you not asking him why he thinks he's so entitled that he can be a part of the game?
Instead, you're talking to him about his collection of baseballs that he has done this with
and all the other times that he's done this and you're just making it out like it's something
to encourage, to have more fans do, to give him more of a spotlight based on the fact
that he broke the rules.
several times has interfered in several games.
And you just don't know the impact that interfering in a game like that has.
Yeah, it has an impact in the moment, but it has a ripple effect.
It goes on beyond that.
It's not just that one moment in the game.
So I would just want to implore people to be better when it comes to choosing your guests on
your show and giving someone a platform.
I don't really think that this gentleman deserved it, nor do I think that he deserves to be
applauded for his actions.
again, I said this on our short today, but come see the show, don't be the show.
It's that simple.
Come see the show.
Don't be the show.
You're not part of the goddamn game.
Derek, some people are saying that Jake McCarthy should maybe inspire, you know, this podcast a little bit.
Is it the cursing?
With the cursing.
Is it the cursing?
Because, you know, in typical old pH and XDbacks, vintage PHNXDbacks, if you will,
we would have just let it loose on this guy.
Do you want to go ahead and just let it loose on this guy right now?
Damon, you want to mute me?
Yeah.
Oh,
you're back.
I'm back.
How'd that feel?
Cathartic.
That was good.
I had a lot to let's stop my chest.
Don't you miss it?
Oh, I miss it so much, David.
I miss it so much.
Jay Cuddy's right.
We'll get a John Boy breakdown maybe of my lip syncing.
Absolutely.
That's going to be.
That's going to be a lot.
Oh, no.
Russell said I'm not muted.
Oh no.
All right.
Well, if you heard all that, then you really got to enjoy it.
Derek, I'm afraid that's going to be your last day with the company.
Hey, it's all right.
It was worth it.
It was worth it.
All right.
Well, we appreciate you guys.
I do want to say that in the spirit of Jake right now, Derek, last Kingsnake, you were elated at the site of Jake McCarthy jumping for joy.
Well, when he hit another bomb tonight, we got another action shot in the moment, Derek.
Oh, my God.
Look at this.
Has anyone ever been happening?
No. Has anybody ever done the jump shot maneuver celebration better than this man? Look at him. The flow is
flowing. He's got the full extension. Looks like the Jordan logo. That's from the logo. That is from the
logo. Oh, God. That's great stuff. Appreciate you guys. Thank you guys so much for joining us. I'm sure we're
over our time. I'm sure Jacob's going to yell at me, but oh, well, we'll just, well, whatever, but it's late.
Thank you guys for being here. We love you guys. We appreciate your time. We thank you so much for your
comments. Of course, make sure to follow us on Twitter.
I am at Cap underscore Cidman with a K.
Damon, as always is at Damon Dog
with a D-A-W-G, and we are all
Damon's dogs. Bark, bark, our
shows at P-H-N-X underscore D-Backs, but all
roads, as always lead to at P-HNX
underscore Sports on Twitter, Instagram,
and Facebook. We love you guys. We thank you
so much for your time. We will be back tomorrow
with another post-game show. And then
don't forget, Thursday is our pool party, so we
will have a 12 p.m. show. I think Jesse's
going to stop by for the 12 p.m. show.
I'll make sure that he puts
sunblock on
nose and drinks plenty of water.
Don't you worry.
But we'll be back then for that.
But of course,
join us tomorrow for a post game show.
Hopefully the Diamondbacks can secure the series win in game three against the Giants.
Oh,
we have a bunch of super chats that I completely ignored.
You know what?
We're in overtime, right?
We're just already in overtime.
You want to throw the logo up there just to make it for official.
Yeah,
we're in overtime.
I know you guys aren't watching on GoPHNX.com anymore or on your favorite app anymore.
We're gone off of there.
But still, whatever.
If you're still seeing this, come on over.
to go PHNX.com.
We're going to keep the party going.
Bcc.
Is he talking ball or is he talking about?
Oh, we're talking about hitting that.
Yeah.
And we're talking about hitting that when essentially, baby, when it comes to Jake and
Alec, $2 comes back in with a, I knew the tongue would fix Zach Gallen.
Oh, no.
Next one.
Jake getting that cake decimated tonight by me, wowsa.
And then we'll finish it off with damn Jake is bubbled up there on the final
Jake picture.
Big body Jake McCarthy doing the jump shot.
Yeah.
Johnny Walker.
Johnny Walker.
Be back a minute.
Friend from elementary school.
It's been a minute.
Yeah, I haven't seen him in a long time.
Yeah, I forgot about your friend since nine years old.
Yeah.
Johnny.
But an imps of Yoshi rounding us out.
Did you guys like the graphic I sent on Twitter?
I don't know if I saw it, but I've been very busy.
So I will make sure to check that.
But I did like this, all this news about Jake McCarthy cursing.
That's got me fired up.
James McCann has me fired up
and Zach Gallen with 10
strikeouts that definitely fires me up but
oh Johnny Walker I missed you too
great stuff Becca in the chat
says I don't I usually don't chat but the game
was so amazing tonight glad Jesse didn't jinx
things joking hey thank you
Becca and yeah that's the reason why we wouldn't
have Jesse on the show because if you would have
they would have found some way to collapse
in an 8 to 2 victory but
we appreciate you thank you for your comment
and please comment more we love when you guys
comment we love to chat with you guys
I sit here and do this show and Damon does his best to try to get videos ready for me before I throw to him and make a complete ass out of myself.
But again, we appreciate your comments.
Love chatting with you guys.
Appreciate you guys.
We'll be back tomorrow again, like I said, with another postgame show.
So join us after tomorrow's game.
Hopefully we'll be celebrating another Diamondbacks win.
But until then, I want you guys to all have a wonderful evening.
