Starting point is 00:00:00 Well, the milkman absolutely delivered in the Bronx, tying a career high in strikeouts with 13. Welcome in to Studio K presented by our friends at Circle K. Welcome in to the PHNX DeBacks postgame show. My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX and a big fan. of the milk band of course.
Starting point is 00:00:44 Welcome in to you guys. What a win tonight for the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was a dominant performance by Zach Gallen and then things got very, very close there, unnecessarily in the ninth inning with Anthony Volpe's Little League home run, which we'll get to all of that. But what a night for the Diamondbacks
Starting point is 00:01:00 to clinch a series win here over the Yankees by a score of four to three. They improved a four and two on the season. Again, welcome into this podcast. We are so glad to have you here. Ph.NXD Back Show, of course, is presented by Bet365 and our friends at GameTime. Go download the Bet365 app today.

Big shout out to my guy, large intimate Kevin Thomas tonight on the ones and two. two's kev what a win it was for the diamondbacks what a performance they've put up so far
Starting point is 00:01:47 against a very potent new york yankees offense yeah no it was a great game to watch unfortunate that they couldn't get rewarded with the shutout you know that they deserved puck kind of sold that one away a little bit but overall what else can you want lordis we know it's lordis you know lordy lordy lordy lordus lordy lordis lordy lordis oh man yeah it was a fun one there let me tell you i'll say this much uh these these these these torpedo bats have definitely been silenced by the Diamondbacks, but they still got one there in the ninth inning. But they did not get any against Zach Gallen. What a night for the milkman.
Starting point is 00:02:19 Galen threw all of his pitches tonight. He went to the fastball, 31% of the time. He went to the knuckle curve 30% of the time. He used his changeup 22% of the time. He was accurate. He was in the zone. It was fantastic. My pronunciation of milk bothers Sean?
Starting point is 00:02:38 Milk? Wait, why do you say it like Melky Cabrera? Milk? I don't know. It's just the way. You say it like it's M-E-L-K. Milk? Yeah, milk. Milk. Yeah, there you go. I will, I've said it this way my entire life and I will not change it because Sean tells me so in the chat. But back to the Zach Allen performance tonight, my man was shoving. He did everything that he needed to do. He got 24 whiffs tonight. 13 on the curve ball. And that pitch was just working 72% of the swings.
Starting point is 00:03:11 were misses on the curveball tonight. He ends up going six and two-thirds innings, allows only three hits, no earned runs, no walks, and ties a career high with 13K. Probably should have been 14K, right? He was robbed on an Austin Wells check swing by third base umpire Malachi Moore,
Starting point is 00:03:33 which is a crazy, that's a crazy pro wrestling name. Like, I don't know why a pro wrestler isn't already named Malachi Moore. But yeah, that man is added to the list along with a lot of other people in the game of baseball. This was his first scoreless start of over six innings in a very long time. Last time he did it was a complete game shut out over the Cubs September 8th, 2023. So just what a night on the mound for Zach Gallen.
Starting point is 00:03:59 And again, there were concerns after his first outing. There was concerns that, you know, was Zach Gallen going to be the guy that we knew him to be? and he definitely proved it tonight in New York. Though I do very much hate that it happened in front of the Yankees because as we all know, it's a career, it's a contract year for Zach Gowan. And there have been a lot of rumors in his time as a Diamondback that Zach Gowan will somehow end up playing for the Yankees
Starting point is 00:04:32 once he is a free agent. And tonight very much did not help that cause because he was excellent and he did it in front of a team. team with basically bottomless pockets. It felt like an audition, no? Like when I was watching with Damon, I said, Damon, can I say something a little nasty? Did he just audition for the damn Yankees? Like, is that what that was?
Starting point is 00:04:54 Yeah, well, Ina says it best. He was nasty in cold weather pitching tonight. And I mean, that, like, it was, it was just filthy stuff. The way that he had batters completely baffled. I mean, the knuckle curve was working so well that one of point. he just threw a really high inside fastball to Aaron Judge and got him to strike out on it because Aaron Judge was 100 convinced, 100% convinced that that was going to be the knuckle curve that dropped down in the zone and instead it just rode right up in on him.
Starting point is 00:05:24 He ends up doing a weird check swing thing that gets him to strike out. So Gallen just looked dominant and this is the Zach Gallin that we know he can be at times. I think that obviously opening day is what it is. I think there's a lot of things, a lot of nerves, you know, on a day like that. but much like Corbyn Burns, who, by the way, if you watched the show yesterday, you might have seen, I didn't really feel like it was Corbin Burns's fault that his debut was a bit disappointing. But, and I know he struck out eight, you got to admit that four and a third innings by Corbyn Burns was just a little disappointing, right? And it was due to the defense behind him, and I completely admitted all that.
Starting point is 00:06:01 And again, it's the first time debuting against a very good offense. Like one thing to remember here about this Yankees team is that, that they just set a home run record in their first four games, including game one against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Yankees went deep three times in game one of this series to reach 18 total through their first four games of the 2025 season. That mark broke the major league baseball record for the most homers. A team has hit through the opening four games of the season.
Starting point is 00:06:31 And it breaks the previous record set by the Tigers in 2006, who had 16 home runs in their first four games. So this is a potent Yankees offense that the Diamondbacks just came in and shut them down for these two games. The Diamondbacks offense, meanwhile, wasn't much better. They only were held to, I think, three hits totaled themselves, but they did get on the board early. And that was important. You had Marte leading the game off with a walk to start the game. One batter later after Corbyn gets out, Lordus Gueriel goes yard with a 399-foot, two-run home run,
Starting point is 00:07:05 106.8 miles per hour off the bat. D-backs are up 2 to nothing. So, and then in the second, yet another lead-off walk by Gino, a single by Gabby, sack fly by Perdomo scores Gino, and then a single by Cattel Marte, who was recently extended with a brand new contract extension
Starting point is 00:07:24 or brand new total contract overhaul, you could say. He gets an RBI single that scores Moreno, pushes the score up to four. And for Zach Gallon, for the most part, that was all. that he needed. Zach Allen cruised after that. By the way, Marte was called out trying to steal second on a BS call where Anthony Volpe, who is also on my list, went ahead and pushed him off the bag.
Starting point is 00:07:48 It seemed like, I mean, that's what the broadcast said, and Kattel kind of came off the bag slightly, was called out, and yeah, we don't love that. But, hey, it is what it is. The Diamondbacks still get a win. The defense was much better tonight, although Geraldo Pardomel gave us all a heart attack by basically cruising all the way out into center field where he had no business being. A routine ball for Jake McCarthy turned into an incredible catch for Eraldo Perdomo, but he almost botched it, almost, didn't.
Starting point is 00:08:18 But again, much better defense tonight. No, and didn't see those frustrating mistakes from this team. But the frustration did come in the ninth inning. Bullpen was fairly solid. Joe Mantiply came in relief. Ryan Thompson was okay in the eighth, but then he came back out in the ninth inning, and he really struggled. And you know I don't like to say that about T-Time,
Starting point is 00:08:37 but he gave up a pair of singles to Bellinger and Judge to start the inning. He gets replaced by A.J. Puck, who gets Jazz Chisholm to fly out and then gave up the most little league home run I've ever seen to Anthony Volpe. Again, Volpey on the list, his torpedo bat also on the list. Volpe's home run had an XBA of 60. I'll repeat that. Not 600, not 60%, 060.
Starting point is 00:09:12 That ball, that home run would have been a hit 6% of the time. There are only two goddamn stadiums that that ball would have been a home run in. And of course, they're both owned by the Yankees, one being Yankee Stadium and the other one being George M. Steinbrenner Field, where the Tampa Bay Rays currently have to play in one of the most embarrassing situations in baseball history. So yeah, there's that. Makes it an unnecessarily close game.
Starting point is 00:09:44 Probably causes a lot of people to, you know, question. Obviously, if AJ Puck belongs in that closer role, I think that he still did a good job of rebounding after that. Obviously, game now much closer for three. I think he did his part to not lose it and still get what the Diamondbacks needed. He goes out there. He gets Austin Wells to pop up to Gabriel Moreno in foul territory
Starting point is 00:10:08 and then strikes out Jason Dominguez to end the game. And again, high pressure situation where AJ Puck is brought in and does give up a home run. This is the second outing now that Puck has been brought in. I do think that a lot of people at this point are going to start clamoring a bit for Justin Martinez to possibly get that opportunity. Tori Lovolo has kept this closer situation up to this point, especially fluid. So I don't think that it's not, I mean, it's not like he can't go ahead and make that call.
Starting point is 00:10:43 It's just a matter of if he will and when will he do that. But I still think A.J. Puck is a solid reliever. And yeah, like Stephen Banana says, we're all still puck heads. What do you think about that, Kevin? I mean, still a big moment, still Yankee Stadium. I mean, he comes in with inherited runners on. It's just not ideal that in his two outings so far that we've seen, he's giving up a home run.
Starting point is 00:11:08 Yeah, I got PTSD to the end of last season where he gave up that home run that kind of... It's hard not to, man. It's hard not to, right? And now I don't want to think of him like that, but now I'm starting to think of him as like, as that guy, that just anytime I'm watching him pitch is just going to give up. It gives you, you have so much less faith in him going forward. Right.
Starting point is 00:11:26 Because more and more you only have memories of him giving up late, late inning home runs. Yeah, yeah. Elise says third straight outing. He's given up a ninth inning homer if we remember back to his last outing at 2024 against the Padres. We didn't need to remember that, Elise. We didn't need to take that terrible memory trip down memory lane.
Starting point is 00:11:45 But yeah, it's the truth. And again, this bullpen has looked fairly solid. The additions of Jalen Beaks and God help me for saying it, the amazing Shelby Miller really feel like the front end of the bullpen is solidified. It makes you wonder if we'll start to see Beeks and Miller get maybe some more high leverage opportunities, not to say that AJ Puck deserves to fall out of it or, you know, again, Ryan Thompson doesn't deserve to be there. I think what we have to stop doing right now, which is, was my problem the other day with the mistakes made by Tori Lovelo as a manager is just
Starting point is 00:12:20 stop at this point being overly critical about mistakes and thinking guys because a mistake was made, need to, you know, you need to move on from him immediately, right? Zach Allen proved today, you know, how good he truly is against one of the most elite offenses in baseball. And it's easy now to kind of flush that opening day start and say, okay, well, you know, this is, this is things back on track. We're probably not going to see him stay at this level, right? Like his next start, maybe he'll come back down to earth a little bit.
Starting point is 00:12:53 Maybe it won't be as cold out there like Ina said. and he won't be able to have that advantage. But still, it very much feels like Zach Gallen is back and this team is back. And again, mistakes, little mistakes were made there. The bullpen wasn't clean, but they still got the job done. So regardless, though, you know who our King Snake is. There's nobody else that deserves it. It's the one and only milk man himself, milk man himself, Zach Gallen, six and two-thirds innings pitch, 13 strikeouts.
Starting point is 00:13:21 Again, ties a career high, three hits, allowed, zero runs. So really, really good stuff here, man. Tim, Tim Ankenman says we miss Kevin Ginkle. We absolutely miss Kevin Ginkle. But yeah, great stuff. RA missed the game. Glad we could fill you in, R.A. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:39 Holy cow, 13 strikeouts. And it was more impressive than even the stat line says. Like, when you saw some of the embarrassing swings and misses that Zach Gowan generated tonight, it was incredible. It really was. So at least for the most part, it very much feels like our starting pitching is back on track. Now the Diamondbacks have an opportunity to bust out the brooms tomorrow and sweep the series against the New York Yankees. And we are going to talk a lot about a lot of things on this show, including Cotell Marte's contract extension and the fact that the Diamondbacks need to keep winning in order to keep up with this ridiculous National League West. We're talking about all this on this show.

You and me both. In fact, me and Damon discussed taking a little boys trip together over there. Chat, chat. They were in cahoots without me, chat. We're in cahoots.
Starting point is 00:16:49 Yes, we might in fact be in cahoots. But, you know, we're rapscallions. And that's what rap scallions are up to. We're always up to cahoots. Patrick Wayne collects. Thank you for your super chat. He says, Hey, Derek, you're doing a great job this year.
Starting point is 00:17:04 Thanks for the content. Gang, gang, snakes live. Means the world to me, as I'm constantly under fire around here, for being a non-ball knower. So I appreciate it. And let me tell you,
Starting point is 00:17:15 this team is a lot of fun to watch. And it's going to be all year long. It's not going to be perfect, right? This is another game that proves that we can't, just dominate a victory, it feels like. I mean, even though some of those eighth inning comebacks so far this year felt fairly dominant, this one definitely felt like it was slipping away there in the ninth inning. And again, AJ Puck did a great job of rebounding and getting the win.
Starting point is 00:17:40 And let's take a look at the numbers from this win presented by our friends at Desert Financial. Diamondbacks win by a score of four to three. They get out hit by the Yankees three to six. Runners in scoring position, both teams did not do great. Diamondbacks were one for five. Yankees were one for four. Extra base hits. Yankees had two.
Starting point is 00:18:00 The diamondbacks had just the Lordus Correel home run. And expected batting average, 229 to the Yankees 171. And that average is being drugged down by Anthony Volpe's home run. That is just an XPA of zero six zero. Took the words right out of my mouth, Eric. Remove the words right out of my mouth. Yeah, Elise says the offense went to sleep after the second. That was tough to see, especially in a game where Zach was shoving like he was.
Starting point is 00:18:28 You wanted to see the boys go out there and add more, tack on more and keep it going. I think that this was one of those nights where Carlos Rodan actually woke up and pitched a pretty good game after looking fairly weak early on in this one. I think that's the best way to describe it. But this Diamondbacks team just finds a ridiculous way to win baseball games. And this one just happened to be Zach Gallen. And we got Jagertha in the chat. So now it's officially a party. But, yes, Zach was extremely awesome.
Starting point is 00:19:03 And again, yes, Zach Zend, it was cold. The cold helped out. I mean, the cold was the reason that both offenses, I think, were literally so cold. So there was that as the night went on, going back to Elise's question there is, you know, or Elise's point is that the offense seemed to get colder. the night got colder. In fact, at one point, we literally saw Lordus Gurriel trying to heat up his bat and not metaphorically. That was my favorite part of the game. Our sweet Lordus just like handle up to the heater, just leaning over there. Like, man, that was so adorable. I love that. It's, it's again, it's one of those things where we, we here in Arizona don't have to deal with that. This is, this is crazy playing weather in conditions like this where you have to wear a face mask in April. I don't want to live in this kind of weather.
Starting point is 00:19:55 No wonder people come down here and hang out until the middle of May or June. But, yeah, I mean, again, this was not a dominant victory by the Diamondbacks, but it was a dominant night by Zach Gowan. When you talk about this, and I believe this was courtesy of one friend of the show, Jesse Friedman, founder of the show is really what I should say. I believe he said that the first time through the Diamondbacks rotation, the Diamondback starters had an ERA of 4.68. that's not good.
Starting point is 00:20:23 It's not good for a team that we felt was going to have a dominant starting rotation this year. It feels yucky. That's probably the Derek Montia way to say it, right? But what it feels like is it feels like once again, despite the fact that all the pieces are here for the pitching to be good, the results aren't there, right? Merrill Kelly was kind of the star there in as far as the first time through the rotation. But now we're getting the second time through. And now guys are comfortable. Now we're kind of past the opening jitters of the season.
Starting point is 00:20:56 I believe it was Zach Gallen that said nothing really prepares you for actual, you know, regular season baseball. Like spring training is just not that. And I think the fact that, you know, you get out there for your first outing and, you know, you look at guys like Zach and Corbyn Burns, they had actually, they had pretty good springs. When you look at their numbers from spring training, both guys came into the season with good numbers. Again, Corbin Burns' start was a bit more impacted by some poor defense behind them, some lengthy at bats, you know, really driving up his pitch count. Again, not really a terrible
Starting point is 00:21:32 outing, just a short one from him where, you know, four runs scored, only two are earned on his part and he still struck out eight. So I get very encouraged by that. I look forward to Corbin Burns' next outing, and I look forward to seeing what the starting pitching can be once it gets on a roll. So far what we saw tonight out of Zach Gallen has to be encouraging to you. If you're not encouraged by this, because again, if the starting pitching can be this, then everything else can fall in the place. I would say in the first five games so far, the offense has proven that it's there. But tonight was probably one of the weaker performances and the Diamondbacks were still able to find a way to win.
Starting point is 00:22:10 That is what this team has done so far, is found ways to win, found ways to get themselves to foreign to and honestly that you know who knows what happens and that comeback that garret hampson makes the base running error and makes the final out there on the base path maybe the diamond backs win that one and we're looking at a five and one team right i mean it really feels like that's where they should be at even though it's not that's an imaginary world we don't live in uh but it's it's it's very much uh you know an exciting i guess exciting performances so far from this team but it was a beautiful Galantines Day in New York, and that's the thing for everybody to remember.
Starting point is 00:22:52 But, of course, a big reason why the Diamondbacks were able to get that early lead is thanks to Lordus Guriel Jr. and his home run, which is our Sanderson Ford deep drive of the game. Lordus Guriel gets that two-run home run in the first inning, scoring Cotell Marte, who got on with that lead-off walk. And Lordus Gueriel is still struggling a bit. I mean, his numbers right now aren't great this season, but, I mean, things are getting back in the right direction, right? He has five hits now, batting average of 217 with a 772 OPS, and this was his second home run of the year.
Starting point is 00:23:30 There's still some things to be concerned with. Michael says, Alec over Jake right now, and yeah, you're not wrong. I think, if I'm not mistaken, Jake McCarthy, just to verify I was not wrong on that. When 0 for 4 again, he still does not have a hit this season and has a 118 OPS. I mean, we've seen guys struggle like this. This isn't something new. And everything tells you that Jake's going to find a way out of it. It's just a slump for him right now.
Starting point is 00:23:59 But again, it does feel very much like Alec, who struggled himself offensively in spring training, found a way to get out of it himself and has been hitting well and probably deserves to get some more starts over McCarthy right now. But again, they're probably, once again, is the factor of Tori Lavala wanting to let his player kind of play out of the slump, get that opportunity to regain his confidence and be back to the hitter that they know Jake can be, right? And Jake's dangerous on the base path. He's proven to be a good hitter, but he's really struggling right now.
Starting point is 00:24:35 So I don't know what the answer is when you're talking about so early in the season. However, we've said it before, to be said again, Alec Thomas is a tremendous defender. And if his bat right now is hotter than Jake McCarthy's, there doesn't seem to be a whole bunch of reasons why to give Jake more playing time over Alec. And that's not just because I'm wearing this shirt right now, even though I feel like that's kind of a damning piece of evidence. It's a sick shirt.
Starting point is 00:25:04 It's one of the best giveaway items they've ever. While we're on the topic, our guy journey in the chat, who please stay away from the tornadoes as well. Where is the Corbyn Carol we saw in the spring? because you were also talking about the difference between spring training and live play. And then also, can we see more Alec, please? I think Jake is 0 for 15 at this point.
Starting point is 00:25:22 What do you think the odds that we actually get more Alec Thomas is there? Oh, I think it's going to happen. I just think it's a matter of matchups right now for Tori Lovelo, and it's to a point where Alec has to prove in a bigger sample size that he can hit right-handed and left-handed pitching. And I think if he does, he'll win more of the everyday job. They do carry five outfielders. Again, that's part of the reason why.
Starting point is 00:25:44 they got themselves into that jam with the, you know, losing their DH in that game where Ryan Nelson had to hit. So there's some roster issues as far as that's concerned. It makes me believe that Tori is going to continue to rotate guys in and out, have guys play, have got, you know, it's it's not going to be a regular lineup. And I don't know. I mean, it feels like historically, once again, that might be something that goes against the green, right?
Starting point is 00:26:10 Most baseball teams have an everyday lineup where they're players outside of having a day off here or there, are going to play the same position and hitting the same order in the batting order. So, I mean, Tori, to his credit, is still trying to figure things out with this team and where he wants everybody to be. But, you know, again, I hope he doesn't tinker too much because that's definitely a flaw of his that we've seen in the past. We got some super chats. I know that one guy says rain or shine milkman delivers. Hell, yeah, he does. Thank you so much for your super chat. And even when it's really, really cold on a New York night, he especially delivers. And do we want to say the milk is warm? Is it warm milk? Is it put you to
Starting point is 00:26:54 sleep? Put the Yankees to sleep with some warm milk, right? That's good. That was good. I wish I would have thought of that earlier. You brought it around. Yeah, I brought it around. Workshops it in live, in live time. Patrick Wayne collects, thank you again for your other super chat. He says, you know whose numbers don't look great? Walker, walker, walker, walker, walker. And yeah, you're not wrong. I mean, again, though, defensively, we really miss him. We really miss him. We're going to continue to
Starting point is 00:27:20 miss him. But yeah, I mean, for the contract he was given and the situation that he was in, especially with that oblique injury, it's not like he's one of those guys where I still I don't care. I want to see him do good, even though he's not on this team. I love
Starting point is 00:27:36 Christian Walker. I think he's a great dude and a great baseball player. But yeah, I mean, for the most part, sometimes you do have to be, I guess, excited that the Diamondbacks made the right call in certain situations when it comes to roster moves like that, right? So, well, we'll see, you know, what happens with Josh Naylor. Hopefully, his defense can improve, and we can see a little bit more of a, you know, consistency over there at first base.
Starting point is 00:28:04 All right. Well, if you guys are done making fun of the way I pronounce milk, I will move on. But we got it that time. Did I get it that? I don't even know how to say words anymore. But also, English is my second language. So the things you're saying might be considered a hate crime. That's all I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:28:21 That's all I'm throwing out there. That's a good defense. But on the other side of this break, we are going to talk more about the Catel Marte extension. I know we had a little emergency podcast. But for those of you that weren't able to make that, we're going to bring around some interesting information and answer some questions you might have about it. Ketel Marte is going to be a diving back for a very long time. We're talking about it on the other side of this break. Don't you go anywhere.

Starting point is 00:30:21 You heard me, a two-year lease on a brand new F-150 super crew. That is actually unbelievable. That is unbelievable. And you know, you know, there's guys that are good enough at golf that they can instantly like visualize themselves in this truck. Starting point is 00:31:03 Stop by our golf tournament and maybe get a hole in one, win yourself a two-year lease on an F-150 super crew. All right. Well, Cattel Marte has been. been extended, ladies and gentlemen. It's actually a second extension to his contract here. He had his contract extension back in 2022. We talked about this news coming up yesterday on last night's postgame show. Mike Rodriguez was first on it. He reported last night that the two sides were discussing a new contract. And lo and behold, today, we got our guy, Nick Bacoro, reporting that
Starting point is 00:31:40 the contract is worth $116.5 million, with $64 million in new money that's guaranteed. Ketel Marte is guaranteed to be a member of the Diamondbacks barring a trade through 2030. So the club already had them locked up essentially through 2028, right? So 2028 was the team had an option for 2028 and you knew they were going to take that option. Now this deal solidifies 2028. Ketel Marte will be paid $20 million for 2028. he'll be paid $22 million for $2029 and $22 million for 2030.
Starting point is 00:32:20 And then there is also a player option worth $11.5 million. That's per Jesse Rodriguez of ESPN and Nick Picoro. Rogers adds that there are escalators as well in the contract that could allow Cotel Martade earn up to a total of $149.5 million over the course of the deal. He also has a five-team, no trade clause. and God, I hope the Dodgers are one of those teams. But yeah, Ketel-Marte, again, signs an incredible extension. And yeah, I mean, for instance, our very own Damon Dog had some questions about it,
Starting point is 00:32:57 considering that the Diamondbacks already had Kutel-Martay, you know, locked up through 2028. Age 34. In reality, right? This only adds two more years onto the deal. that's really what this does. And this also pays him more money than he would have received with, I believe with the team option that was already set for 2028.
Starting point is 00:33:23 However, I will say this, that Cotel Marte is one of those players that you just don't acquire easily. It was a mistake on the Seattle Mariners part. He ended up blossoming here in Arizona, and he ended up becoming an elite, major league baseball player as a member of the diamondbacks over the last two seasons martay's numbers have been extraordinary and we have a look at those averages that he's had so far over those two seasons kattel has hit 283 over 2023 and 2024 an on-base percentage of 365 a slugging percentage of
Starting point is 00:34:02 520 he has an 885 ops which is just ridiculous over two seasons 61 home runs and 11.7 war there from baseball reference. So he's an incredible talent, one that you do not want to lose to free agency. And again, as a reminder, Cattel would have been a free agent this past off season. You know, he would have been in the prime of his career coming off of making history in the playoffs in 2023 and having a great season in 2024, an MVP caliber season that was derailed by one Garrett Stubbs, who was once again with Anthony. Volpe and Malachi more on my list. But we very much have seen, you know, Catelle
Starting point is 00:34:48 Marte be excellent. And that is what we hope to continue to see out of him. Mike Hazen was on the broadcast tonight and I believe he echoed all the same sentiments that I brought up in the show. Really what it comes down to is wanting Cotel Marte to spend his entire career in a Diamondbacks uniform. We don't get that. We just had to see this weekend Paul Goldschmidt in a Yankees uniform. We have to see potentially some of our guys like Christian Walker now in an Astro's uniform. These other guys, we don't want that. We don't ever want to see Corbyn Carroll in another uniform. We specifically don't want to see Catelle Marte in another uniform. So I feel like these extensions are, they speak volumes to the team and are just kind of reinforcing the fact that this team,
Starting point is 00:35:38 the front office wants to illustrate to the players, to the fans, to everyone. everybody, that they are full on, fully committed to competing in this very, very difficult NL West. And we're still going to talk about how tough the NL West has been already this season because it's bonkers, how good this division actually is. But according to Nick Picoro, there's that player option again for 11.5 million. That would be for 2031. The Diamondbacks could have Cotel Marte through, I believe, what would that be? Is 38 37, H-38 season at that point? I believe so, yeah. And again, when Mike Hazen says he wants Cattel to be, you know,
Starting point is 00:36:16 the Diamondback for the rest of his career on the broadcast tonight, I mean, this is, that that almost locks it up, right? That solidifies it. So it's not to say that Cotel might not have, play a few more years after that. But, man, it's great to have finally one of our guys, not only, you know, get up to that elite level that we knew that he could reach, but also, you know, be rewarded for that by this franchise,
Starting point is 00:36:41 keeping him here in the Diamondbacks uniform for a very long time. And also, the fun part is we are going to defer $46 million. So, yeah, if you can't beat them on the deferred payments, you got to join them. And that's a whole lot of fun because why not? Here, here, let's, we're all going to die one day. Let's just build up unsurmountable amounts of debt and then we'll just pass away. So is that too dark? Did I turn that too dark there, Kevin?
Starting point is 00:37:10 I mean, the truth hurts. You got wrong. Love hurts. You're not wrong. But what else? What do we got in the chat? We have anything good in the chat? Yeah, we do have a couple of super chats here, Derek.
Starting point is 00:37:20 Oh, let's go. Clearly with a double super chat. Oh, $2. BCSC, let's go. How do I get Ketel's number, heart emoji? Oh, I hate to break your heart. I'm going to break your heart again, BCSC. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:37:32 I don't really want to do that. Do I got to pull up the family photos? Don't, don't pull up the family photos anymore. I have photos from him and his incredible family at the All-Star game last year I could pull out. You don't want that. Beconcy Clearly also says, I'm Donzel Vasquez, Rufus Hawkins. I'm 27, work at Goodwill Columbus at the ODOT build.
Starting point is 00:37:49 Is he doxing himself? I think he's doxing himself. Maybe we shouldn't help him with that. You just, what does go on? Beconcy clearly. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, we need to talk now. Stephen Benis. Mr. Banas.
Starting point is 00:37:59 There are five teams are on Marte's no trade list. I can't get over Becomcy clearly doxing himself. I would love to know what his no trade clauses. I'll try to find that. it just says no trade clause at this point. It doesn't have any specific information on what the no trade, what the teams are that are blocked. But I really hope that the Seattle Barroners are one of them.
Starting point is 00:38:23 That's what I really hope. Just as a big in your face to Shane and everybody there that wants them back. But yeah, no, I don't have any information yet on those five teams. Not sure we'll get that information. But again, contract extensions being thrown around, right? Who do you guys want to see? Given a contract extension next, it very much feels like Gabby Moreno is that guy. That's probably who I would put up there.
Starting point is 00:38:49 Also, I could say that after tonight's performance, I'm sure a lot of people would love to see Zach Gallant sign a contract extension. And, you know, I don't think that's going to happen, unfortunately. But after tonight, I would you sign? Well, I'm not signing anything after a game like this. 13 strikeouts in the Bronx? No, sorry. hard pass. We'll wait for a couple more
Starting point is 00:39:12 starts. Candice Montoya, thank you so much for your chat. She says, how do you guys feel about Tori's off day schedules? Do you think they help or hurt? I mean, honestly, really what it comes down to is that and this is where I start to verge into
Starting point is 00:39:30 the defending Tory territory. It's not defending him, but I guess I understand what he's going through, right? As a manager, a lot of injuries, occur early in the season because guys especially with a short spring training like they just had guys are still ramping up right that's why it drives some of these internet managers insane
Starting point is 00:39:54 seeing tory do things like sitting corbin already sitting gabby already and i think there's a method to the madness i really think when it comes down to it when they hit the when they when they hit their stride towards the end of may and beyond i'm sure we'll still see like right guys sitting regularly but I think that the reason for it is because he feels like they have to get there, get through this initial period, keep everybody as healthy as possible. And then, you know, he can start really running guys, especially once they get hot, right? He did say one press availability that he's changed and that, you know, again, he brought up the name of David Peralta, but he specifically said, you know,
Starting point is 00:40:36 I don't think I'll be sitting a David Peralta after, you know, five hit night. And I think he was just being that metaphorically as something that he's been known to do in the past. I just think that there is more to this than we all can understand because he as a manager really does do things in a non-traditional way. Right. But for him, it's a marathon. It's not a sprint. It's about keeping the guys healthy and getting through the 162 game season. And, you know, again, getting there with as many healthy bodies as possible.
Starting point is 00:41:10 Also, you know, worrying about the competition aspect a little bit more after the season starts, right? It's not that he doesn't want to win, but the health definitely has an importance over, you know, making sure that he starts guys every single day and make sure that every lineup is the best players that he could put out there, right? So, I mean, again, Brian says defending the territory. Yeah, that might have to be what we call this segment. Brian, you might have nailed it. But again, it is, it is, it's, it's his. specific form of managing. He's very open about it. He will tell us when we talk to him about
Starting point is 00:41:46 stuff like this. It's weird because sometimes I think we as media go into like a postgame, you know, media availability with Tori with the same kind of like fire that that fans have. And yet when we ask a question, Tori has a sensible answer as to the reason why he did things or even if he makes a mistake like we've seen him make so far this season, he owns up to it and usually says it was a mistake on his part. Right. So I'll tell you, man. it's it's a long season and at this point we've seen a lot of teams like the Braves last year who already are struggling this year really get derailed by injuries right they still found a way to you know collude with the Mets and make it into the playoffs eventually but uh you know I think
Starting point is 00:42:29 those are the things that Tori at this point is trying to avoid is those early season injuries especially to star players that could really uh change you know the course of this season uh Benjamin Hunley says AJ Puck now has given up four homers in his last four innings. Going back to the last Padres game last year, are we concerned? Benjamin, you might have showed up late. We did address this earlier and it made me just as sad then as it does now. And yes, we are concerned. I think we're concerned.
Starting point is 00:42:56 What's your level of concern? Are we concerned or are we traumatized by his last three ninth inning outings? Both. Both. Traumatized by a lot of ninth innings by Diamondbacks closers. I think Tori's been traumatized by ninth innings by closers. There was a point where it didn't matter who the hell he put in this game. They would suddenly turn to crap.
Starting point is 00:43:17 It could be his best reliever and he'd put him in the ninth and he'd fall apart. So I don't know. Sometimes things don't work out. I still think A.J. Puck is a very good pitcher. And I think he might just not want to pitch in New York anymore. That Anthony Volpey home run is not a real home run. It's hard for me to get mad about that. home run. It had a 6% chance of being a hit. A 6% chance. It was a home run in two lousy
Starting point is 00:43:48 stadiums both owned by the Yankees. It's not a real home run. Sure, it went over the wall. Sure, it counted for three runs, but it shouldn't. And I don't. So again, I'm not panicking about AJ Puck, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Tori potentially turn here soon. to somebody else for that close a roll. It feels very much like he's made that decision for AJ Puck to be that guy for him. And he's kind of sticking to it for now. But yeah, Jack Jay is with me. So short, short porch little league torpedo home run doesn't count.
Starting point is 00:44:26 So no, we're not counting it. Who wants to get rid of the ninth inning from baseball? That is a great idea. I think every Diamondbacks fan is very much in favor of that idea. And meanwhile, if you root for the Dodgers, you probably need that ninth inning in order to continue to come back. But we got another super chat from B. Com C clearly. Oh, I'll read this one. You can take on the Sun show.
Starting point is 00:44:50 Yeah, on the Sun Show, producer Noah reads all of his super chats. So I guess I will take on the Noah Ulbrecht role tonight. I appreciate that. BeCom CLEARLY says, LOL, I am so, so up in the clouds. I need Jake's cake. Hard emoji. I'm going to have to clip that. I'm going to have to clip that for sure.
Starting point is 00:45:08 I need that. But I just won't introduce the super chat. I'm just going to be audio. Steven Bananas. Mr. Bananas wants to know. Well, he wants me to ask you to guess the five teams. Guess the five teams.
Starting point is 00:45:19 Give us five. It's definitely the athletics and it's definitely the Tampa Bay Rays, right? Like there's no way it's not. Who wants to play for either of those franchises right now? Counterpoint, though, the front office respects Ketel. Would, like, would that even have to be said? You know what I mean? I'd make sure I said it.
Starting point is 00:45:38 I trust this company to have my best interest in mine, but I still want it written in the contract. You know what I mean? I still want it in the contract. Those two teams right off the bat. Cotel Marte, not a cold weather guy, would go to a major city, though. I think he would go back to Seattle, and I think he would go to every California city. So I'm not going to rule any of those out. But I will eliminate both the Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins. Those are two teams that I'm going to put in the no area.
Starting point is 00:46:11 I will say that there's probably a very high probability that he wants to be traded to the Marlins, if he ever has to be traded just to be as close to a beach and cars that look like his because he drives a very flashy car. So I'm not going to roll out any of the terrible southern. The Marlins definitely not. The Rays, though, absolutely not. They're on the list. So we're up to four. I need a fifth team.
Starting point is 00:46:35 Sure do. No. He really, he looked like he had a great time in Texas. I can't rule out the Rangers. It didn't look like he was out of place there. Um, white socks. Good pick. White socks. Good, good poll. Right. I mean, if you're going to go to Chicago, you want to go to the Cubs and not the White Sox. That's like, that's a nightmare. You've been traded to Chicago. Which one? The White So I'll go get my stuff. So, all right. Well, that's how that works. But again, uh, Cotel, Mark. signing that contract extension. Exciting stuff. Cannot wait to see the statue be built of this man out front of Chase Field because we need that definitely. On the topic of extensions, Derek, I saw Carlos IP say it in the chat.
Starting point is 00:47:21 I saw some other chatter say it as well. Do you think if Gallin wasn't a Boris client that he would already be extended? I don't know. I mean, on one hand, Scott Boris clients do not sign extensions. That's just the way that it works. And I think it's on purpose. It's by design. It's the reason is is because you can always go back to the team that wanted you.
Starting point is 00:47:45 If they wanted to give you a contract extension like the Diamondbacks want to extend that gallon, they will, even if he explores free agency in the same way they brought back Lordus Gurriel Jr. who explored free agency and Randall Gritchick, right? And according apparently Randall Gritchick, like there was a game there kind of being played a little bit with Gritch. and that process. But the Diamondbacks, you know, they were trying to negotiate. And sometimes you have to respect that as part of the process of letting a player go to free agency, right? Sometimes if you don't, a player doesn't know their worth.
Starting point is 00:48:18 They go out there and they start seeing the real offers. They realize that they might want to stay with their team of, you know, their team's willing to offer them more or maybe even, you know, a similar amount just to stick around as a member of the Diamondbacks, right? So I do think that, and Mike Hazen's talked about that. He's talked about encouraging players to explore free agency so that they know their value as well. I just think that maybe if he was, maybe if he was with a different, you know, a different agent, maybe that is a bit more of a possibility considering that, you know, that's part of, it seems to be part of Scott Boris's playbook, you know, to let those guys go out. And, yeah, who says if Boris clients, especially pitchers extend before free agency, it's because,
Starting point is 00:49:03 Scott Boris has like a fantastic force type type like research facility over there. He has better doctors than any major league baseball team as that man has more money than God himself so or herself whatever way you want to go with that. But yeah, that man definitely knows stuff about his players far before a team would. So yeah, you might be on to something there. Also, if you guys want to join us, we've talked a little bit about all of this fun we're having. we talked about the PHNX Cardinals draft party. We also have the PHNX green jacket open scramble.
Starting point is 00:49:39 Again, I can't express enough how much fun I had the last time I was involved in a golf tournament. Damon very much put all of my information out there in the streets about it. He put out there how I signed up for a job and then was the first person to volunteer to take Espos spot when Espo had to go do an emergency. Mike Boodenholzer podcast. And I think that yes, that's a... might make me look like a bad teammate, but also a very smart person is what I think. But that 2 p.m. shotgun start on April 12th at Dobson Ranch Golf Course and Mesa includes range balls prior to the round, 18 holes with a cart, games throughout the event, which
Starting point is 00:50:17 apparently we're going to be operating said games. So you get to come do trivia and all sorts of stuff with us. Raffle and tournament prizes, we're going to give you a P.HNXT gift, a little gift package. food after round party at Dobson Ranch and so much fun to be had. Plus that whole and one competition presented by Sanderson Ford, where that whole and one wins you a two-year prepaid lease on a new F-150 super crew. So sign up as an individual or a foursome right now over at go p.hnx.com slash events to take part in all the fun, April 12th at Dobson Ranch Golf Course.
Starting point is 00:50:52 And that's also my daughter's birthday. So I'm going to be very busy that day is what I'm saying. Also, if you are by your. yourself and you are apprehensive about doing this. Don't be. If you want to come join us and you're an individual, let me tell you, you might find your new best friends because I think Justin Spears and I are never, we're never closer until we played golf together.
Starting point is 00:51:16 And that was a whole lot of fun. And I was, I was just texting with Justin Spears actually like live on this show about the green jacket open. I was on his show this morning. Because I'll be on his show tomorrow morning. Look at that. So, yeah, we'll be talking green jacket open with each. Justice Spears tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:51:30 ESPN, Tucson, don't miss it. I'm sure Max will probably be mad at me for throwing that out there. If you are in, and if you're an Arizona fan, I know we probably don't have too many of those in the chat. Gross. My guy, Sean, holding the line for all of us wildcats in the chat.
Starting point is 00:51:41 Get out of here. Reggie Geary, I don't know what this is. I'm just saying on Reggie Geary, Arizona, you know, athletics. You're hijacking the show and making it the U of A show again. This is a green jacket show, Derek, actually. I'm not making this about me. I'm trying to make it about.
Starting point is 00:51:59 The company about the green jacket open. I make everything about me, and that's the reason why I am as hateable, apparently, as I am. But you know what else? I hate, Kevin? What do you hate there? What the hell is going on with the NL West? Tell us all about it. Because everybody's good.
Starting point is 00:52:16 Every team, well, except the Rockies. The Rockies are the Rockies. But all the other teams are good in the National League West, and it is infuriating. The Diamondbacks right now can't seem to gain any ground. They are still fourth in the National League West. after they won this game tonight. And that's because nobody else in the National League West wants to lose. The Dodgers right now are down 5'3 to the Braves.
Starting point is 00:52:40 I probably shouldn't be saying that out loud, but it is the chance for the Dodgers to possibly lose their first game of the season. That would put them at 7 and 1 in their first eight games to start the season, which is still the best start through eight games in franchise history for the Dodgers. Meanwhile, you have the Padres over there who just, just won the game. They have not lost the game. They beat the Guardians today. They improved to 7 and 0 for the first time in franchise history. And not to be outdone because they still need to be one place above us. The San Francisco Giants beat the Houston Astros today by a score or to improve
Starting point is 00:53:20 to 5 and 1. I don't care what the score is. They just won and I hate it. Heli Aramos won't stop hitting extra base hits, as double in this game has given him an extra base hit in each of San Francisco's first six games. That matches a club best feat by Felipe Alu from 1963. It's crazy. It's crazy the history being
Starting point is 00:53:45 made by every single one of these competitors in the National League West. And again, the Diamondbacks have yet what seems like a giant hill to climb. And I don't mean to use that joke with the Giants being a part of it.
Starting point is 00:54:03 Elise says the Giants will come back down to Earth. I feared this about the Padres because despite all the inner turmoil and strife they have about their ownership situation for the San Diego Padres, I just felt like this was going to be one of those situations that galvanized the team. It was going to be something that somehow brought those guys together. And that particular group of guys is not a group of gentlemen that you want to motivate. Right. So when you start saying that, you know, the team isn't going to be good this year because of, you know, the front office issues and other things like that that are going on, you know, that's not what's happening with the Padres.
Starting point is 00:54:40 And I hate it. I wish it wasn't. The San Francisco Giants, Ina Jackson says the San Francisco Giants are sneaky good this year. Yeah, man, I mean, Verlander keeps doing it for us old guys. Let's go. Proven we still have worth out there. Who, yes, Jackson Merrill just got a 10. your extension with the Padres.
Starting point is 00:55:00 I don't know. Why is the NL West always like this? And yeah, it's just frustrating because this takes me back to last year where we couldn't really enjoy the Diamondbacks going on would seem like a historic stretch of winning. Because every time we won a game, you looked over your shoulder and the Padres won their game too. So I don't know. I mean, yeah, Elise is right.
Starting point is 00:55:25 The Giants are old. some of these other teams they have they have some things to go through right i believe uh freddie freeman reagravated an injury with his ankle so uh these are those that's the type of you know injuries troy lovela and his staff are trying to avoid right now uh we got a super chat there that i missed let's check and see no we don't oh okay we do not we do not but i did yeah stepananas he did oh yeah he did he did he did he did ask you a question yeah step i mentally read that and thought you just you just answered it in your own head yeah i did one of those those text message situations. Derek, can you be high and also golf at the same time? Oh, my friend.
Starting point is 00:56:03 It might be the only way to golf. Let me tell you, unless you're competitive and care about the results. If you care about the results and are competitive, then I would not advise it. But if you want to have a good time and you want to enjoy yourself and you want to not really care how many golf balls you lose into the rough or into the water or wherever, there's nothing I can suggest more. I mean, it's three hours out in like the woods. How is that not a great time to be high? That's crazy. There's a lady that brings you drinks and snacks multiple times.
Starting point is 00:56:43 Not just one. She just doesn't stop by like the ice cream man one time. She'll come around four or five times, bring you beers, pretzels. The one, Dobson Ranch will even bring you a little. sandwiches. Are you kidding me? It's a great place to be high. And yeah, Patrick Wayne Collect says, ever heard of John Daly? We have pitchers that have pitched perfect games and no hitters while on drugs. So like, yeah, you can go play recreational golf while high. That's definitely something you can do. But you might not want to try out for that whole in one
Starting point is 00:57:15 competition. That might not go so well for you. I will say this, though, a pole in one? Oh, Stephen bananas. I salute you, sir. Yeah, but it's going to be a fun time.
