Starting point is 00:00:00 Well, there was a lot of happiness to start tonight's game. It was opening day, which is basically a national holiday. But things turned quickly for Zach Gallen and the Diamondbacks. Some poor defense and a bad outing by Gallen ended up with Diamondbacks losing game one to the Chicago Cubs. We have all of your postgame coverage here, as well as a place to commiserate with your friends. And welcome in to Studio K presented by our friends in Circle K. You know that song. You hate that song.
Starting point is 00:00:28 When you hear that song, that means the Arizona Diamondbacks lost, either a game or a player, which they absolutely did tonight. Diamondbacks lose to the Chicago Cubs by a score of 10 to 6. Welcome into the PHNX D-BAC show. My name is Derek Monti, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX. I have a cast of characters here to join me tonight to commiserate about tonight's loss to the Cubs. And it sucks. It sucks. I'll start off by saying that.
Starting point is 00:00:56 I'll also start off by saying the PHNX Diamondback show is. presented by Bet365 in GameTime. Download the Bet365 app today and use code PHNX 365 and sign up with $20 for your first purchase with GameTime with code PHNX. Go check out all of that stuff. You hate to see it, says Mango Man. Welcome in. Chris the Grouch says, hello. Still was a fun day despite the loss.
Starting point is 00:01:19 Got to see my friends. I agree with that. I have a lot of friends at Chase Field and it was so great to see so many people out there. wasn't great, however, to see Gowan struggle the way he did on the mound there in the second inning. It also wasn't great to see the Diamondbacks not play what they consider to be their brand of baseball. The Diamondbacks made far too many mistakes tonight. Their offense wasn't great, but let's be honest, when you score six runs, you expect to win a baseball game. And the Diamondbacks definitely didn't do that tonight.
Starting point is 00:01:50 They lose by a score of 10 to 6. Great to see all of you guys here. everybody, especially people to hear that are ready to overreact to one single loss of 162 game season. You people are my favorites. The ones who are ready to wrap it up and turn that place over there into a parking lot after one loss of the Cubs, you guys, you hold a special place in my heart. But tonight was one of those nights, right? We are used to seeing the Arizona Diamondbacks play a certain brand of baseball, and they didn't do that. I'm joined by the way tonight by my producer on the ones and twos Red Beard himself Captain Red Beard, excuse me, from one captain, a captain of caveman to a captain of Redbeard.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Welcome in, Kyle. Glad to have you here with me. I appreciate you staying up late to do this thing that you probably don't want to do. Thanks for having me, Derek. Unfortunately, not the result we wanted, but happy to be here. Nope, not the result. Forty-9,70 in attendance at Chase Field. It was the second biggest opening day crowd in 4. franchise history. So a lot of people were out there. There were a lot of Cubs fans in attendance, a lot of Diamondbacks fans in attendance. And unfortunately, this one was pretty much about the Cubs not making the amount of mistakes that the Diamondbacks did. There was some terrible mistakes made by the Diamondbacks in the fifth inning that probably were the big reason why they
Starting point is 00:03:11 ended up losing today, at least losing by a score 10 to 6. Perhaps the game could have stayed closer. But here is what Tori Lavello had to say after the game on the team. committing too many mistakes. I think the theme of the night was that we made too many mistakes, and they turned into stressors, too many stressors on this team, but one time, it's a lot to overcome. And I can basically tell you what some of them are. They're very obvious to you guys, the plays that weren't made defensively.
Starting point is 00:03:43 But inside of the game, the way that we look at it, there were a few others that we got really tightened up. They're identifiable things. There are things that we talk about often, that we practice often, that we, you know, compare and contrast when it's done right. It saves innings and saves pitches. When it's done wrong, it makes innings linger, and you can potentially give up big crooked numbers. Throw on the fact that out of the exact really got into a rhythm, you know, it was an uncustomary outing for him. We ended up walking six or seven batters day, gave him 12 hits.
Starting point is 00:04:17 It's 18 base runners. There's a lot of things that we got to type. not. And yeah, I mean, that's what we saw tonight. What we saw were mistakes, especially with two outs, or big hits with two outs, leading to innings being extended, leading to pitchers pitching far more than you want to see them pitch in a single inning. And also led to Zach Gallen's night being far too short. Gallen just had himself a terrible second inning. He never really seemed in sync. He couldn't find the strike zone for a stretch. I think he threw 11 straight balls. And it should have been 13 or 14, but the umpire. kind of let him off the hook there. He did throw 29 pitches in that second inning and only 12 for strike. So you saw Gallen just kind of lose control there and he got it back on track. It was just too much damage there done in that inning. He gave up two walks, two hits, which include double to Ian Hap, who was a thorn in his side all night.
Starting point is 00:05:13 He gave up a single to Tucker to Tucker and three RBI.I. So, and Ian Hap against Gallen tonight was two for three with a double home run and three RBI himself. So Galen really just didn't have it tonight. He ends up going four innings. He gave up four hits, allowed four earn runs, four walks with four strikeouts, four score and seven years ago. Gallin admitted that he didn't have, you know, his best stuff tonight. And I think that, you know, again, he discussed his delivery being too fast. We have here more from Gowan on on let's start off with first his performance tonight.
Starting point is 00:05:52 Clay first thing was fine and then just maybe working a little bit too fast there in the second and just seven trouble excluding really sort of him down to. But yeah, it was a tough time getting the rhythm. But it's the first one in the year. So you got 30 more. Yeah. I think that was a bit of the key tonight is that of course this is just one loss. They don't really feel like things were like that the team was at their best tonight.
Starting point is 00:06:21 However, you know, it's definitely, it's going to cause people to question Tori LaVolo at the end of the day is really what it comes down to. We all know that Tori had a chance to go with Corbyn Burns on opening day and instead he chose that gallon. And now after this outing went the way it did, I'm sure there's a lot of people that are questioning, second guessing, Tori Loblo. And maybe rightfully so, right? Maybe that was not the best call. You have the fact that Tori going with Corbyn Burns has two, you know, two things there. One, Corbyn Burns has the track record of starting on opening day. He has the track record of being an ace going out there in the biggest moments and, you know, and being successful, right?
Starting point is 00:07:02 But you also have the fact that, you know, Tori, who admitted this himself, he mishandled Corbyn's routine, his schedule, which doesn't permit him to start in. game two and now uh corbin burns won't start until the upcoming series with the new york yankees so uh again with the way that this went you know i guess history will always suggest that perhaps tory lobello should have gone with corbin burns in game one but uh this is what tory had to say on gallon's performance tonight yeah i haven't had a chance to talk to him directly about what happened and that's what i'm feeling like the rhythm just wasn't there he's got he's got as good of a down fastball with carry as anybody in the league. So I think maybe the carry wasn't there and there might have been a little bit of a yank.
Starting point is 00:07:50 It looked like it was just falling off the plate a tiny bit. And I went back and looked at the pitches. The umpire got a lot of them right. And Gabby was squaring them up and it looked like the pitches were missed, but they weren't. So I just think it was probably a little bit of a yank. And Zach can probably tell exactly what that means. I'm just looking for my seat. They're uncustomary misses.
Starting point is 00:08:09 And an 11 in a row, that's a big number for Zach. Yeah, and Tori is not joking when he talks about Zach Gallen's fastball, not carrying their low in the strike zone. We have a picture here, an image of his baseball savant from tonight. I mean, you can see here how all over the place Zach Gallen was in this game. And Ryan Nelson, he struggled a little bit with command, but by comparison, Zach Gallen was completely out of the strike zone. he wasn't throwing competitive pitches he wasn't fooling batters frankly so you know that this is especially there in that second inning he did seem to get things back on track you know and he did discuss his delivery being too fast this is what Zach had to say about that I mean just
Starting point is 00:08:56 from a delivery standpoint just like I was just I was working with it too fast um having trouble just kind of you know syncing everything up um but yeah kind of where I felt as the first. It's opening day, right? It's easy to get excited. It's easy to do these things to make these mistakes, right? And so we'll see. I think that one thing Zach Gallen has proven in his time as an Arizona
Starting point is 00:09:23 Diamondback is how consistent he is. So I think Gallen will settle down. I think we'll see him perform better. And I also think that while I do want to be the voice of reason in the room, despite the fact that that's not normally my job. Yes, while it is just one loss, we know how much each and every win and loss mattered last year. So, of course, we want to, one, not take it too seriously as fans.
Starting point is 00:09:50 We want to not lose sleep tonight over this. But, you know, of course, you do want to see your team come out and have a good showing on day one. Gallin said that there are no excuses for tonight's game. In fact, here he is saying that exact thing. Yeah, I mean, I don't know. I don't think there's any excuses not to come out, you know, playing decently well first night,
Starting point is 00:10:14 just from all passes of the game. But yeah, to your point, it's a little different going from spring train to a real official game. But as we saw last year, every game counts. So we should have come tomorrow right to play. And I have faith in this. Even with the way Zach Gallen pitch, there was a good chance that the Diamondbacks could have, have held this, you know, to maybe four runs being scored by the Cubs, maybe five. We know that things also got out of hand once Ryan Nelson came into the game.
Starting point is 00:10:45 Ryan Nelson's line looks pretty terrible. I don't really feel like this loss is on Ryan Nelson, and Tori echoed those sentiments when he talked about the mistakes being made defensively behind him. The defense failed Ryan Nelson, but his line ends up going one and two thirds innings pitched, five hits, four earn runs, one walk, and three strikeouts. And those are all credited to some huge mistakes the Diamondbacks made in the fifth inning. Heraldo Perdomo going to second instead of first with two outs that extended the inning being the biggest mistake there. Because Perdomo had a play at first base.
Starting point is 00:11:19 He was there. He had the ball in hand. And instead he goes over to second base and PCA ends up beating him to the bag. No out is recorded. And the inning continues. I believe who in the chat brought up the Jake McCarthy. misplay as well. Jake McCarthy misplayed a ball that it looked like he had there in the outfield. That allowed three runs to score. But Tori after the game said that that play, I believe,
Starting point is 00:11:44 had a 46% catch probability, which isn't very high. He also said, though, that this team makes 46% catch probability catches usually, and that's why the defense is usually so good for this team. So not a lot, of course, to be excited about after to night's game. I will say the Diamondbacks still manage with how poorly, I guess you could say, like the Diamondbacks did get some offense. Cattel Marte hits a lead off double to start the game, a two RBI or two out RBI bloop scores Marte and then the Diamondbacks take a 100 lead, right? And then Gino hits a solo home run, which by the way, that solo home run there to lead off the second inning was our Sanderson Ford drive of the game, Eugenio, A. Hueneos-Weres, given the Diamond
Starting point is 00:12:34 back's some excitement there bringing them back into the game however however as davin looks at me sad from outside of this room and makes me feel even sadder he has his own sad things going on i i want to bring him in here but i don't i don't know if he's ready to deal with dual sadness tonight but again the offense why am i such a loser i don't know it's because you got co-opete today and that used up all of your luck buddy i'm sorry uh anyway the diamondbacks uh again shout out to gino he got hit, which we didn't like. He also got his tower buzzed there. We didn't like that either. Corbyn got hit. Don't like that. Corbyn has a new batting stance. It's weird. It's incredibly different. I mean, when you talk about the comparison they showed there during the broadcast of what
Starting point is 00:13:19 the stance used to look like from last year to this year, it's very radical, very, very new. But again, the Diamondbacks went cold there for stretches and they weren't really able to do much. They loaded the bases in the six. They get two back on some sack flies, but they couldn't get the big hit. They're still able to generate six runs. And like I said, this team is a team that believes if they can score six runs in the game, they should have a chance to win it. So bullpen again, not great.
Starting point is 00:13:47 But the bright side was Jalen Beaks, who the Diamondbacks just added or just added to their roster. He looked outstanding tonight. He went an inning in two thirds. He gave up zero hits, zero runs, no walks, and struck out one. Tori was very high on Jalen Beeks. In fact, he told us he doesn't really know him, but he still went to him like he did and got that extra up down from him to come out for one and two-thirds innings.
Starting point is 00:14:14 Here's what Tori had to say about Beeks' performance. He was fantastic. And when he came off the mount, I said, we're going to win a baseball game tomorrow because we might win tonight, but we're certainly going to win tomorrow because of what you were able to preserve for. So it was a lot of fastball with a really good change-up. So he's controlling the zone front to back. and establishing fastball.
Starting point is 00:14:33 And it's hard, right? I started to have conversations with him today like I've known them for an entire year. And we kind of laughed about it. I said, look, you got to be honest with me. I don't even know you. I barely know your first and last name. I need you to go out and do something crazy
Starting point is 00:14:47 and go out there for a second up. And you just got picked up and I'm sure you've been at home for a couple days. It looks like you're really cruising right now. But you got this? He's like, whatever you need. I'm ready to go for you. So that meant a lot to me.
Starting point is 00:14:58 I like that. I like him already. And the Diamondbacks needed. arm because the other bullpen arms tonight weren't solid, right? I mean, you didn't get a solid performance out of Brian Nelson. Definitely didn't get one out of Jarvis. So the Diamondbacks, you know, just kept letting the Cubs tack on runs, despite the fact that they, you know, kind of tried to surge their way back,
Starting point is 00:15:19 to try to nibble their way back, especially with that basis loaded situation. It's not great. But again, at least a highlight there is Jalen Beeks. But Elise says Beeks for Kingstake. Elise, I'm not kidding you, he was on my short list. I didn't know who to go with, but I didn't think any pitcher really deserved it tonight. So I gave it to Gabby Moreno because Gabby was out there doing his thing tonight. Gabby was two for three with a walk.
Starting point is 00:15:44 He scored two runs. And I think more than anything, when you looked at the approaches guys were having at the plate, I really liked what Randall Gritchick was doing. I always love what Cotel Marte is doing. But Gabby looked relaxed. He looked like he was taking what was coming to him. and he didn't look like he was really trying to force some things. Some of the guys, especially once the team went down,
Starting point is 00:16:05 they did what they did last year when they struggled offensively and they tried to hit three home runs and one at bat. It just doesn't happen, right? So again, I couldn't bring myself to give it to a relief pitcher on opening day, Elise, but yeah, Beeks probably deserved it. Also, Gabby called a pretty good game behind the plate. He did a good job of trying to frame Zach Gallen, trying to bring those pitches in.
Starting point is 00:16:26 But as you saw from that baseball savant page, things were erratic tonight on the mound for gallon and that's unfortunate but uh i i need some i need to bring in some reinforcements and again it's way too late for him where he's at so on the other side of this break we're going to bring in the one and only dalton feely from john boy to get his feelings on tonight's game and i also need him to tell everybody to relax a little bit about losing uh the first game of the season so don't you go anywhere you're watching the ph and x dback show Of course, I could use some pure edibles after a loss like this, and maybe you can too. All right. Well, I've made him stay awake. And there he is. I made him wait too long.
Starting point is 00:19:13 It's the one at only Dalton Feeley. Dalton, thank you for joining my friend. I wish it was under better circumstances. I know how much you love to see your snakes win. But what were your thoughts on tonight's loss, especially with Zach Gallen not really having a strong outing tonight. It's our snakes, Derek. You know, it is our snakes.
Starting point is 00:19:33 It is our snakes. It is our snakes. I know. Man, where do I begin? I think it's time. Move on to 2026. It's over. It's something I would say if I believe it.
Starting point is 00:19:44 All right. See you later. Don't. No, no, but in all seriousness, it started great. want to know Josh Naler makes his debut in the desert gets a big two-out knock gives the stakes elite and if the game stopped right there I think it's much better than it for a majority of us would have been a good time yeah it would have been a great time it's game one folks I'm not super worried yet and I do want to give a little credit to the cubs first and foremost they kind
Starting point is 00:20:15 give me a little 2023 chaos diamond back vibes especially with Warner PCA and shaw like those those three guys can run and we saw it with PCA and that Perdomo play in the fifth inning. Right. There's a there's a handful of guys that beat out that play to second base. That's why it was. I think that's why it was so automatic for Perdomo to go there, right? Perdomo goes there because nine times out of 10, that's the play, especially with just one out. You're just doing a little flick over to second base.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Cotel gets the out and we're done. Right. So I don't fault him for that. But, you know, again, Tori talked about it. more than just Perdomo's mistake. He did appreciate the fact that Perdomo took responsibility for it, like the way he did. He said he didn't even hesitate. He said he didn't have to talk to him because Prudomo came and spoke to Tori and said,
Starting point is 00:21:03 my bad, right after the inning ended, right? But Tori also, you know, blames it a little bit on pitching, right? And that Ryan Nelson didn't really do a great job of checking on PCA over there and keeping him, you know, at first base. So as far as Tori goes, he had a list of about 10 mistakes that the team made tonight and Geraldo Perdomo's was definitely number one. And Jake McCarthy's was at the bottom of the list, but Heraldos was up there. And that's where it kind of started in that fifth inning was that play by Perdomo.
Starting point is 00:21:33 It was a little bit of a domino effect. Arguably, you could say it started with Ryan Nelson, not checking on PCA, making sure his lead isn't big at first base. Maybe you could blame a little bit of nail or just not like giving him the old glove pat, you know, make them inch back to first base. You know, now we're just drawing straws here. But I will say with the McCarthy play, I put out on Twitter that, oh, I guess Jake McCarthy took the Aaron Judge playbook, make dropping things ball, and get thinning. No, I got to text right away saying, what the hell are you doing?
Starting point is 00:22:06 How can you say that? And that's fair. I get it. And that's not an easy play. It's a play that I think he makes, he should make a majority of the time. You said 46%. Something like that. That's probability.
Starting point is 00:22:18 I even think it's higher in the adult and feely probability eye test rating. It looked very catchable. Like, I mean, I actually had to ask a couple of people what happened because I was watching it. And it kind of looked like just maybe the fact that he had to like, it looked like when he hit the ground, the ball just kind of came out. Right. But I don't, I didn't get a clear look at it. It didn't really look like.
Starting point is 00:22:42 And I think it's because in the moment, my assumption was he was just going to make that. And the inning was going to be over. I almost couldn't believe that he didn't, right? So, but hearing that that, you know, that that play had a bit more difficulty, obviously, than the Geraldo Pardomo play, right? It's, it's an interesting perspective thing. I felt like the Pardomo thing was just guys moving fast on the base path, whereas the McCarthy catch looked a little bit like it should have been more of a sure thing.
Starting point is 00:23:09 And Tori felt differently about that. We also have more from Jerry P. himself from the clubhouse, which we didn't get to, but here's Perdomo on that play. Play, we're talking about in sprint trainer. Those little did too, like, that's going to happen. I went right away to him and I told him. It was my fault, you know, I should have to the right base. We got to know who's running, too.
Starting point is 00:23:35 PCA is really a great runner. He got a SP and, like I said, at the right base. So again, you know, there's just further, you know, confirmation of him accepting responsibility for it. But it just, it's in a 10-6th game, it's wild that that play ended up being so critical. But it was, right?
Starting point is 00:23:58 I mean, you know, the rest of the game plays out differently should the Diamondbacks be able to keep those three runs off the board. And you know the snakes, their offense, number one offense in baseball last year for a reason. There is no way they were going to be held to two or three runs in that game. Yeah. They got to steal. They could have put a little bit more on steel.
Starting point is 00:24:16 earlier than the game they didn't quite have that big hit and then they had the inning where they had two sack flies bases loaded no outs they never really had that big hit and i even text you towards the end of the game like this game is not going to end eight five yeah you're you're like this is going to be an eight seven game could tell marty is going to hit a home run but it's going to come one run up short uh and you were i mean it it kind of felt like that right like it felt like in tonight's game that the pursuit of the cubs every time they closed the gap the the the cubs found a way to distance themselves further, right? And it's like, I think that was what was the most frustrating thing about watching this game was you did feel at times like the Diamondbacks were just one, one big hit away from not necessarily tying it at times, but constantly being back in it. Like it felt like almost in every inning, they were one hit away from that. And then on the flip side of it, there were one pitch or one out away from holding and preventing the Cubs from scoring still. The first eight runs they scored are all with two outs. So it's those minor things. If you get that one out, the domino effect doesn't happen the cubs aren't going to put up a double digit spot on you
Starting point is 00:25:20 and that is the frustrating thing with baseball prodomo makes that play if mccarthy makes that play if ryan nelson checks there are so many things that you could pick at in this game the cubs still put up a 10 spot and that is so frustrating i i the only thing i will say that gets me a little worried the offense is fine uh i the pitching has always been problem since 2024 even 2023 prior to the Cinderella run, whenever I see an opponent put up double-digit runs, that is a red flag right away. And I know it's game one, but the rotation should be a strong point. The bullpen should be a strong point.
Starting point is 00:25:57 And it didn't look at today. But you know this as an athlete in your time as a great in the warehouse games, right? Like sometimes there's nothing more demoralizing than a two-out hit, a two-out run being scored. And as Elise says here in the chat, the Cubs had eight, two out runs score tonight. And that's, uh, that's disgusting.
Starting point is 00:26:19 It's disgusting. And like, again, it's hard sometimes as a baseball player, uh, to, to, I guess kind of overcome mentally,
Starting point is 00:26:27 the fact that, you know, oh man, that we were almost out of it. And now, you know, here we are giving up three more runs and all of this bad stuff happening.
Starting point is 00:26:39 I, yeah, it's, I'm erasing it. We're going 161. All right. That's my new. You're taking the day one mentality approach. Do you have any concerns with Zach Gallen?
Starting point is 00:26:49 Like, and I guess going back to my question, people questioning Tory, they're going to do that all year. They already want them fired. They want to know, you know, obviously, now you could say like Corbyn should have started, right? Like in hindsight, we'll never know what a Corbyn burn start in 2025 on opening day would look like because that's come and gone, right? but it's going to be easy for people to say Corbyn Byrne should have started here on opening day. What was your thought about that when you did see that Zach Gallen got the nod? I was totally cool at Zach Gallen getting a nod. I think it was more of a respecting than anything else. Gallin and Corbyn, in my opinion, are very similar caliber pitchers.
Starting point is 00:27:29 I do believe Corbyn Burns is the better pitcher and he does have the accolades to stand for it. That said, I give more Tori a little bit more flack in terms of how he handled the Burns timeline pushing him now back with being sick. That's my bigger view because it would have been nice to see Corbyn have his first game in Chase Field start game two right after Gallen, get him a little bit more acclimated with the desert in Chase Field and whatnot. Instead, with making this decision very late in the process, it now pushes him to game five. He's going to be starting in Yankee Stadium, which I will say not that upset about because
Starting point is 00:28:04 I will be seeing him in person, which is going to be kind of fun. You selfish, man. I'm being all selfish. I'm sorry. I don't, I don't get to see my snakes that much out here. We're in a selfish period of time. We're allowed to be selfish.
Starting point is 00:28:16 Everybody's being selfish. It's fine. But yeah, I don't blame Tori with starting gallon. I think it's more of the result of an, oh, you know, after he gives up four runs and four innings
Starting point is 00:28:26 and he doesn't look great. That's where we're in this way. If he goes seven innings one run and they win this game, everyone's going to say, Tori's a genius. What a great choice to start gallon over the $210 million man. Yeah. So I don't hate the choice.
Starting point is 00:28:40 I just think my bigger gripe is with how we handle Corbyn's scheduling. I want to say this on a personal note, and I hate the fact that it's hard not to for it. It's hard as a, do I want to call myself a journalist? I don't know, whatever you want to label me as. But as a person that's in the clubhouse around the guys, like I don't want to ever feel emotions for them, but they're human beings. And I'm a human being. And it's hard not to, right? So like the first thing that happened with me when Zach was struggling in the second inning was I was already thinking about like how is this going to impact, you know, his contract year.
Starting point is 00:29:15 And we're like, you talk about fans being too dramatic. I'm literally two innings in. I'm like, is he going to get less money because of this? This sucks. I'm sad for him. Right. So like there's that. But I will say that like overall, I feel things are going to calm down.
Starting point is 00:29:31 You know, opening day is such a chaotic day. It's easy for guys to have. a lot of high emotions, but again, it's the fact that I think Corbyn Burns has a track record of being an ace. It's not to say Zach Gallen doesn't, right? Zach is just the fifth Diamondbacks pitcher to start three consecutive opening days, and he's the first right-handed starter to start consecutive days since Zach Granky did it back in 16 and 17, right? So like, you know, Zach earned this, and it's not just because this is his potentially the end of his time with the Diamondbacks, I can understand how maybe a little of that went into the decision
Starting point is 00:30:09 and also the fact that he has been the man here. I'm sure Corbyn Burns is probably amicable to not starting on opening day over Zach Gallen and probably was okay with stepping aside for it. It's just, again, it's going to be a narrative and until the Diamondbacks figure out a way to win games and start winning games, right? There's going to be at least a thought in people's minds about how this season might have started differently if Corbyn Burns was on the mound today. I will say with Gallin, I think the biggest care, there is not much concern I have from this game as an overall standpoint for the dimebacks in 2025. I guess my like orange flag, not my red flag, but my orange flag is Zach Gallen with that fastball. He was in the zone of
Starting point is 00:30:54 43-forcing fastballs he threw. He was in the zone 35% of the time. It's crazy. I've never seen him like that. I've really never seen him like that unless we was like medical problem like a cramp or something like when he was cramping last year. Right. Or he had the hamstring issue where it was like physically in like limiting his ability to pitch. It was not to say it was the yips, but like he was there was some misses where he's missing inside to the right hand of batters and he was just missing that zone and Dean Bolino was not calling that pitch. He wasn't calling that side of the zone and that's fine because they were those weren't over the plate. But then there are pitches that he was just missing high. And I don't know if that was a mechanical thing. He was releasing too early.
Starting point is 00:31:32 You're talking about him speeding up his movement in his windup. Something wasn't right with his fastball. And hopefully that gets fixed because he had that problem late in last year too. Let's take a look. We showed it earlier, but his baseball savant, you know, page here kind of tells the tale about how all over the place he was. Like, I have not seen a pitch chart like this from Zach gallon honestly maybe maybe ever like where he was throwing so many uncompetitive pitches his knuckle curve is basically irrelevant if he's not able to land his four seam or his change up in the zone right so it's like you can see that i mean he was he was throwing the knuckle curve but he wasn't having much success with it and uh man some of those misses they're they're pretty bad yeah and i and i'm trying
Starting point is 00:32:21 to think if my sequencing was right with the hap double to give the Cubs the lead. Yeah. This is the second inning where his fastball is struggling. The first pitch he throws the hap is the knuckle curve because that was the only pitch he really had a feel for. Yeah. And Haps early on it.
Starting point is 00:32:35 He's sitting on it and he yanks it foul. He gives him another couple fast balls, not close, sets him behind an account, has to throw over that knuckle curve again. Hap sitting on it again for a second time, hits the ball down the right field line for a double. So when you don't have your fastball and even his change up wasn't looking great today either in specifically in that second inning, and it's only the knuckle curve working, hitters are going to be sitting on it and ready to feast.
Starting point is 00:33:00 So hopefully, Zach can bounce back and get that four seam back over to zone and nibble that corner a little bit better than he did today. Yeah, he definitely wasn't hitting any of those low, low zone, the corners, the edges, any of that. But again, it's one day, right? I mean, it's just hard to tell that to a fan base that just came off of a season where we missed the post-season.
Starting point is 00:33:24 season by one game, right? So the one game, zero games, it doesn't matter. We're broken, we're sad. And yeah, I can understand how people want to overreact. But I do appreciate you, as always, my friend. And I know we're going to be hanging out a lot more this season. In fact, we're going to have like Dalton Tuesday is what we're going to have. I mean, we're going to have to think of a better name than that, but we're going to get you in here. Last thing I wanted to ask you about. Opening day. We know it should be a national holiday. I'm not going to, I'm not going to say that. But do you compare opening day more to the playoffs or an All-Star game? Or do you compare it more to an actual holiday game like the Fourth of July Games of Memorial Day? Ooh, that's really interesting. I think if I'm power ranking this, I think I would put All-Star game last in comparison to it.
Starting point is 00:34:22 Okay. I think it's a playoff. Like it gives me playoff vibes because it's a game you really want to win. You set the tone of your season. Yeah. You're excited. You're back. It's like, okay, the seasons were here.
Starting point is 00:34:34 It's game time. It's not spring training anymore. Let's go. It should be some sort of holiday. But I think it really gives semi-playoff vibes. Yeah. I don't know if that's crazy. No, I think you're right because that's, I mean, at least it Chase Field, right?
Starting point is 00:34:48 I have to compete in the scrum, you know, like it's the playoffs. I have to fight for my life trying to get these videos. I have to, you know, it's not, I don't even want to go down to the concourse because it's so packed with people. Though I do, I go visit Chris and my friends and all these guys. But yeah, I mean, it's, it definitely has a different vibe than a holiday game or whatever. Like, I think the only reason why I compare it to the All-Star game is because playoffs, I feel like everybody that's in the building is like locked in. But an All-Star game, people are just there to be there. because of the vibes and the, you know, the situation, right?
Starting point is 00:35:27 So it's like sometimes on opening day, it does feel like it's a little 50-50 mix of people dialed in and the people there for the vibes. But I always bring you here for the vibes, my friends. So thank you again for your takes. And I appreciate you stopping by. Can you tell everybody, I know you're at D. Feely 14 on Twitter. Is there anybody, any place else you want people to find you?
Starting point is 00:35:48 If you want to go to the IG, it's just my name, Dalton Feely. Why not? John Boy Media talking baseball. We're not just talking snakes. Though we should talk snakes a little bit more. I know. I'll get my influence in there a little bit. Yeah, you got to get it out there.
Starting point is 00:36:03 But yeah, I always, I love talking ball with you guys. I love talking snakes. Always appreciate you guys having me on. So thank you very much. I appreciate you stopping by. Like I said, I know it's extremely late for you, but you're the best. And yeah, we'll get this back on track tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:36:17 One in one tomorrow. All right, man. I'll see you. Thank you again for stopping by. All right. Well, make sure to go not only follow Dalton, but make sure to check out his
Starting point is 00:36:28 incredible career, once again, as an athlete in the warehouse games, because I think I've seen more Dalton-feely highlight reels than I've seen of most Major League ball players. But appreciate Dalton stopping by. And of course, you guys know,
Starting point is 00:36:45 we used to dig into the numbers around here. I'm going to take a whack at it myself on the other side of this break. We got a little behind the numbers coming up here shortly on the other side of this quick break. We thank you guys for watching. Watching the PHNXD Beck Show. I have no idea what's going to happen with the Diamondbacks, but I have less of an idea of what's going to happen with the Suns.
Starting point is 00:37:11 They are an enigma, but you can go watch them at Spanados. You don't even have to have a Suns game on. Just go to Spanados Pizzeria. Order yourself any one of their specialty pizzas, and it's going to be a good time. but might even be a better time watching the suns try to make the playoffs so check out spinoos pizzeria which is the place for sun's fans come out and watch uh check out the official watch parties throughout the season where you can watch the game with the phoenix suns dancers and my friend uh go the gorilla which by the way i just found out today his name is go and we need to have a talk about that but
Starting point is 00:37:43 if you have a decent jump shot you can enter the sponados pizza competition where we play horse on a basketball court. And at Spanados, of course, they don't spell it that way. They spell it pizza. But play pizza, win free pizza for a year and tickets to the Suns game coming up on April 9th. That's a very important game. So do not miss that. Do not miss your chance to be part of the action.
Starting point is 00:38:04 Mark your calendar, Suns fans. The excitement starts at Spanados. Get all the info on the watch parties and pizza basketball contest at Spanadospizzeria.com. Spanados, the official pizza of the Phoenix Suns. And speaking of official things, we got game time, the official ticketing partner of the PHNX Diamondback show, the official ticketing partner of Derek Montia, because why? Kyle, what time is it? Game time?
Starting point is 00:39:28 Yes. Oh, see, he does it better than everybody else. I didn't hit him up. All right, well, let's take a look here at the numbers presented by Desert Financial Credit Union, of course, they always get you a home. They got me and my home, they can help you get started on your home ownership journey. Wish things were
Starting point is 00:39:46 a little bit more friendly at their home for the Diamondbacks tonight, losing to the Cubs by a score of 10 to 6. They get out hit by the Cubs 12 to 9. And like Dalton said, man, you got to respect what the Cubs did tonight. They played solid defense. They didn't, I mean, they had a big home run, but they didn't have a lot of extra base hits. Diamondbacks and the Cubs both had four extra base hits.
Starting point is 00:40:06 But one thing that they did an excellent job of here was taking care of getting those runners in that were in scoring position and creating those opportunities. Diamondbacks were two for 10 with runners in scoring position while the Cubs were five. for 10. And then here, the expected batting average, you can see the Diamondbacks, 331 to the Cubs, 274, a stat that's just infuriating because at times it'll show you what they should have done, but didn't do. But overall here, I think the key was that, you know, the Diamondbacks sometimes in order to win games, need to play nearly perfect baseball. And that's probably cliche to say. That's probably something you could say about every single baseball game that or baseball team that exists, right?
Starting point is 00:40:50 But the Diamondbacks pride themselves on their defense. Tonight you can see that they hung with the Cubs outside of the final score being a bit of a blowout there of 10 to 6. I mean, not really a blowout, but I think anything in baseball above three runs you can consider a blowout. 12 hits 12 to 9, runners in scoring position. They had 10 opportunities, just like the Cubs had 10 opportunities. and even, you know, they had the same amount of extra base hits. Both teams had a home run. Really, it came down to those opportunities.
Starting point is 00:41:21 It came down to having, you know, runners on when they were able to get some of those big hits, which the Cubs were able to do and the Diamondbacks weren't. And honestly, those mistakes. You saw the Cubs, they had a couple of close plays, right? They had a double play there that they turned on Corbyn Carroll and Josh Naylor. That was, it looked like it was. going to go bad the entire time, yet they still somehow pulled it off. And it was very reminiscent of something you would see the Diamondbacks do, right? Especially with the Speedy Corby and Carol on base
Starting point is 00:41:53 able to get him. And then Josh Naylor was not even close there. But, you know, they did a great job of turning two in that situation. And they just outplayed the Diamondbacks tonight, frankly. They made less mistakes. Honestly, the Diamondbacks should probably have more errors than just, I believe they just had the one error. And it did not occur. They did, and it occurred in the first inning, right? So a lot of those mistakes that were made there by the Diamondbacks defensively, they weren't actually errors. So, you know, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:42:27 I don't know. I don't really believe that much. But anyway, going over these numbers, though, you can see that the Diamondbacks offensively were able to hang in there to a degree, really at the end of the day. It was just those backbreaking extensions of innings, right? especially with two outs that just allowed the Cubs to keep putting their thumb on the Diamondbacks tonight, right? But there was still a lot of good vibes out there at Chase Field. And I mean, I know we don't want this to end on a completely negative note.
Starting point is 00:42:58 So, you know, I know a lot of you had a good time out there. Charles Woodall Pike. It was great to see you. He brought us donuts to the office, like the baby angel that he is. But here's Tori, at least trying to put a little bit of a bow on it tonight. and talk about opening night being a little special. It's a great opening night. The fans were here.
Starting point is 00:43:18 There was a ton of energy. You just wish you can go out there and play a little bit better game, play Diamondback Baseball. We will. We're going to get there. And we're going to be fine. It's one game.
Starting point is 00:43:26 You know, we've just got to turn the page without. I want us to feel what we did. And I want us to feel we did right and wrong. And then come out tomorrow and do what we do best. Tori talked about that yesterday in the final, I guess, spring media availability before we got to opening day that you know that day one mentality right and a and a bit of it is the fact that tory and he's changed his ways a little bit he did say to all of the people that do want him fired already especially on day one uh that he has become a little
Starting point is 00:44:02 he's changed he's become a little bit more fluid in his approach he said he won't he won't sit David Peralta anymore after a five hit night, which he's not on this team anymore, but I get what he means in sentiment, right? But, you know, again, the Tory has a good way of now, at least, I mean, because before it felt like he wanted guys to just forget the good or the bad. Now he wants it to sting a little bit. And I think that is a bit of what happened last year. Like last year there was maybe too much of the, let's just move on. Let's just move on. flush it, let's just forget it, when sometimes you want it, you want to not flush it. Sometimes, I don't really like this analogy, but you want to smell it some?
Starting point is 00:44:49 I don't know. That's probably a bad direction to go with it, but you want it to sting, right? You want to feel it. You want to make sure that you remember, you know, that even the smallest mistake that was made. And in this case, you could say that that mistake Geraldo, you know, Geraldo Perdomo made was fairly small. It wasn't the, I mean, it really wasn't as big in the moment. And that's the reason why I think the Jake McCarthy misplay feels bigger because three runs scored on that, whereas the Pardomo mistake was just an extension that furthered the inning.
Starting point is 00:45:24 So, but again, when you assess it, sometimes you look at, you know, the thing that was more of a sure play. In Tories mind, Perdomo making that throw at a first base was the short play. So, yeah, I don't know. But I will say this. Who's asking what was even that reference? I don't know. Was it the smell reference? It was probably a bad reference.
Starting point is 00:45:45 But I don't know. I will say that we got a chance tomorrow to see the Diamondbacks come out here. In fact, they have four games with the Cubs, for those of you that may not know that. So we will take a look here at the probable pitchers for the remaining three games, see how things stack up for the Diamondbacks. And, of course, you know, have some final thoughts here on the opening day. of the 2025 season. We thank you guys so much for being here.
Starting point is 00:46:10 You're watching the PHNX Diamondback Show. I always got to thank all pro-shade concepts for their commercials because as someone that does ads, I find them to be wildly entertaining. They do a much better job than I do, that's for sure. But they also do a better job of helping you extend your outdoor living space than most companies do with a custom fit awning that they can come out to your home. They have hundreds of designs and colors to choose from.
Starting point is 00:46:35 They have ones that retract, motorized. They have LED lighting in them, all sorts of cool stuff. They also can help you with roll down patio shades that block the sun and can keep your patio up to 20 degrees cooler during this hot, hot time of the year here in Arizona. They can also replace and fix most older outdated shades and motorized awnings. So you can look to them for that. They are a most trusted local shade company voted number one by ranking Arizona for patio shades. In 2024, they have a BBBB. A plus rating with over 1,000 5 star reviews on Google.
Starting point is 00:47:09 So you can trust them and you can know that you're going to get a quality product. They've been in business in the Valley for 20 years. They started making window shades by hand for friends and family right here in Phoenix. Now they do it a little more efficiently. They are one of the largest installers of patio roll down shades and motorized awnings in the valley. So call them at 6232041476. Visit all pro shadeconcepts.com now to schedule your free estimate. And I'm not looking forward to driving home.
Starting point is 00:47:38 I know that Kyle's not looking forward to driving home. And I bet we both wish we could just leave our car here and take a Waymo. But you have the option to do that. And of course, Arizona is one of the only places where you can do that. Right here in Arizona, San Francisco and Los Angeles, not even Arizona, just the Phoenix area. Waymo was the first company to serve a fully autonomous ride with no human guy in the wheel in 2015. And that's what you will get. When you order yourself a Waymo, you also get yourself an all-elected Jaguar iPase,
Starting point is 00:48:04 which is way more fun. than when that, you know, other company shows up in an old Tersell or whatever. But, okay, Waymo has over 40 million miles of real world driving experience. That's enough to drive to the moon and back 80 times. So let Waymo get you home safely. Download the Waymo one app right now and ride today. All right. Chuckie Bladwin comes in here.
Starting point is 00:48:28 Chunky Bladwin comes in here to say live at midnight. Yes, I thank you for the reminder of that. I've had myself a very long day, you guys. By the way, if you don't know, I don't have another person I do this show with anymore. So I'm the one that has to go do all the postgame show stuff. I didn't really think that I was going to be doing two jobs. And I really underestimated how much that kid did around here. But, hey, we're here.
Starting point is 00:48:55 We're giving you a preview of what's still to come. And you know what? The Diamondbacks have three more games to make things right against the Chicago Cubs. They could still come out and win this. series and honestly credit to the cubs they already played two games they had a chance to get swept by the dodgers already so they do have their own uh they have to save their own season right so this is definitely uh this is definitely something that that is important to them as well but the diamondbacks will send merrill kelly on uh to the to the mound uh to face off against james and tyone on uh game two
Starting point is 00:49:33 got brandon fought versus mike A Shoda Imanaga there in game three, and Eduardo Rodriguez will finish up the series against Matthew Boyd there in game four. Interesting stuff here that Brandon fought and Eduardo Rodriguez got swapped. I'm not sure if that was, I mean, maybe it was always the case. I don't really know. Things seem to change quite a bit with Tori Lavello's lineup when it comes to basically the Corbyn-Burn situation. I will go back and I just want to echo there what I said earlier and echo what Dalton said. I think overall, you can question a lot of things, especially about, you know,
Starting point is 00:50:16 Tori Lovalho going with Zach Gallen or Corbin Burns on day one and making this decision. But I think ultimately the biggest mistake here that was made was not understanding, you know, your brand new players routine and their schedule and not being able to get them out there for game two. Now, one father overlord Jacob is here in the chat, and he said, Main State W tomorrow, and we've gotten used to that, right? We've seen Merrill Kelly come in here, especially when Zach Gallant has a rough outing and settle us all down, bring us all back, you know, make us all feel good again. And I think that that's what we'll get out of Merrill Kelly.
Starting point is 00:50:55 Hopefully what we'll also get from the Arizona Diamondbacks is much better defense, the defense that we've come to know out of this team. I do want to point out. I don't think we've talked about it yet. But did you see Corbyn Carroll's arm? Did you see Corbyn Carroll throwing the ball into the infield tonight? That's something that's very encouraging. We know that our outfielder's haven't had the strongest arms at times.
Starting point is 00:51:19 So I don't know what that. Corbyn Carroll made some outrageous changes this offseason. I mean, to his batting stance, to the way he throws a baseball, you would think that you can't really improve it. And I mean, we were convinced as media that this was never about Corbyn's strength, right? Corbyn is a strong, very strong person. He's, you know, he's not, that's not a question. It's more about maybe technique.
Starting point is 00:51:46 Maybe it's about something that someone does that limits their ability to have a bit more of a powerful arm. It's exciting, though. And it's exciting to see Corbin making these changes in an effort to improve, you know, everything about him. I am a bit concerned about the batting stance though. I'll say, I'll just throw that out there. I do think that the batting stance is dramatically different.
Starting point is 00:52:08 And I'm interested to see if it leads to the results that we're all hoping Corbyn Carroll will have. He had a great second half last year and he really didn't need to drastically change his batting stance in order to achieve that. So yeah, I
Starting point is 00:52:24 think that there's a right to be a little concerned. I know Damon's sad, Kyle, but can we see if we can get Damon in here because I don't, you know, we bark. We're all Damon's dogs. I want to console him a little bit. I know some of you are sad. I know it's game one. Damon, get in here.
Starting point is 00:52:48 It's 12, 10 at night. I'm not ready to sit here and struggle through being sad all by myself. And I know you have plenty to be sad about. out, but I want you to come in here. I want you to grab a chair. Or you want to come over here? Yeah, just come over here. Wheel yourself in, bud.
Starting point is 00:53:11 You guys had a good run. You guys had a fun time. You did like four shows today. You'll get in here eventually. Come on, come on, pal. Here, let me get, I'm going to get this one. Mike check one, two, one two. What do you want to talk about, Derek?
Starting point is 00:53:31 I want to talk about losing game one of 162, and I know you're sad about it. I know you're also sad about some other things that happened with your basketball team. But it's nothing good in my life, nothing in my life to smile about. No? No. Not even co-opete. I mean, it's the only thing that's keeping me like. Alive, right?
Starting point is 00:53:53 Breathing right now. Yeah, I think it's a good way of quitting it. It's give me a reason to live and that's the reason to live. Yeah. Overall, though, Diamondbacks, I mean, do you overreact too much to Gallen having a bad outing here on day one? I told that's actually the only overreaction I had about day one, actually. Is it really? I'm not joking.
Starting point is 00:54:12 Yeah, I told Kevin, I was like, guy can't throw a strike to save his life. I just checked the box score. I saw that he threw 40 balls. Yeah. And I was like, oh, unbelievable. I guess we got last year's gallon. 40 balls. So over.
Starting point is 00:54:26 Four innings. Four earn runs. Okay. Four hits. Four walk. Fox 4 strikeouts. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:32 No, not great. Not great at all, Derek. Not great. Not great. Not great. It's a contract year, Zach. Regardless if you're going to be here next year or not, we need you to put in effort for your future.
Starting point is 00:54:45 For yourself. God damn it for yourself. Yeah. You're not going to do it for us. Do it for you, Zach. Please, I'm, I'm begging you, Zach. Your family is begging you. But Derek, why don't you explain what happened to me?
Starting point is 00:54:56 Explain it because I didn't get to see like what happened in the game. So I want you to explain to me. Explain baseball to Damon. Basically, then this should be a new segment, right? Explain baseball to Damon. Yeah, because I'm an idiot. I know we have some new friends on Twitter that have joined us that want to be explaining. I have been dingo, man.
Starting point is 00:55:11 It's got emotional. We didn't play sharp. I think that, like, Tori talked about, like, mistakes being the overall theme, which there were. Our guy, Jerry P made a big one. I heard. Made a big one, pal. But he took ownership of it. He came back.
Starting point is 00:55:26 He accepted it. It was just an overall disaster. I'm saying like what a disaster for me. If co-opied had committed to ASU, I don't know that you could have culminated a worse sports day for me. Yeah, yeah. But thank God. It might have been the anger.
Starting point is 00:55:41 People are like, we lost because of Pardomo and his incompetence. And I'm sitting here like, well, that's great. At least, you know, Duke killed us. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:50 I don't know, Derek. Yeah. We're off. See, and this comes back to the playoff thing from last year, right? I still like, you don't feel good right now just because they made it to the Sweet 16, do you? No. You might.
Starting point is 00:56:02 I've notoriously said that Sweet 16s do not make me feel good. Right. Yeah. Right. So it's like elite eights do. That's like winning in the wild card round, but then immediately getting smashed by the- But there, I'll stop you there. If you do beat the Dodgers, like if that season ended, I would have won my World Series before
Starting point is 00:56:19 we won the National League, which was ultimately my other world series. Well, are you going to join me to watch some more baseball this year? I would love to join you to watch more baseball this year. Eric, I do have a little more time with my hands now. I don't know how consistent we'll make it. We'll probably figure that out as we go. But I definitely think that, you know, I'd love to be a part of what we got going on here when it comes to debacks coverage. So, you know, you'll see me on post games from time to time when I can get the job done and when I can get it in here.
Starting point is 00:56:45 We're all Damon's dogs. Of course. Derek, I appreciate you. I appreciate you. Thank you for letting me. Appreciate you. Group therapy session. That's what we all need it here, right?
Starting point is 00:56:54 This is why we're up at 12. You're a nasty guy, BC. He did like your hat, though. He likes your hat very much. So there's that. It just likes all my fucking. We're allowing all curse words on this show at this point. And I,
Starting point is 00:57:08 and Jacob can't stop us. But yes, PHNXPort says hit the like button for the dog and hit the like button for us coming back tomorrow. We're down, but we're not out. Let me tell you. So we'll be back tomorrow. And I mean the Diamondbacks will and we'll be back.
Starting point is 00:57:23 I'm going to have to figure out a way to do this again tomorrow where I go do all of the game coverage all by myself. I'm so lonely. I'm so sad. I did sit next to Jesse in the press box tonight, so I can't lie about that. It was great. It felt like old times. So we appreciate you guys being here. This feels like old times. Commiserating together, being sad together after a loss. Appreciate you guys stopping by. Of course, we will be back, like I said, tomorrow with another postgame show. So make sure to join us one hour after the final out. We'll be back here in this room, sweating and maybe at least celebrating and being a little bit happier. But in the meantime, you can follow me on Twitter.
