Well, the N-Hell-West just got hellier.
This drunken origin of violence has now become a bigger drunken orgy of violence
with the addition of Raphael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.
We have more on what that means for the Diamondbacks,
including Mike Hazen's comments on this team being buyers at the trade deadline.
All of this in 30 seconds, don't you go anywhere.
Welcome in to another edition of the PHNXD Back podcast live from right here in Studio K,
presented by our friends at Circle King.
My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known that as your mayor of PHNX.
Welcome in to another edition of this show.
And of course, welcome in to another edition of the NL West being a nightmare.
Of course, I got my guy Damon Dogg, the one and only Damon Farrell on the ones and twos.
He's still recovering from some losses to his Arizona team in the game of baseball this weekend.
We're going there off the jump.
I didn't mean to attack you off the jump.
That's very, it's, yeah, that was unnecessary.
I apologize.
I'm a little upset, Damon, so you're going to have to excuse me because Raphael Devers
was traded to the San Francisco Giants.
I'm, honestly, I'm unleashing on everybody.
You know, I'm just retaliating against people that don't deserve it.
My cat got yelled at this morning.
My kid, it was an unpleasant morning with my kid.
And it's all the Boston Red Sox fault.
It's all the Boston Red Sox fault.
Of course, welcome in to Spirit Week, though, here at PHNX as your mayor of PHNX as your mayor of
P-HNX, I'm proud to announce that we are doing the thing, right?
It's, come on, it's Spirit Week.
We love Spirit.
We have Spirit.
We have Spirit.
How about you, right?
Today is wear your favorite all-city slash P-HNX shirts.
And today I'm wearing this gem, our Seth Cervesa shirt, which is my favorite shirt.
I'm going to tell you why it's my favorite shirt, partially because I currently control
all of the remaining stock of the Sess Sermesa shirt.
So if you want one of these limited edition of beauties,
you got to DM me personally,
and I'm telling you, the cost is very, very high.
They are very limited addition.
It's basically six shirts I have left in a drawer in my house.
But the reason why I love this Setserbases shirt
is because this stupid shirt was all my idea.
In fact, I think our guy, Eric, is still mad at me for it
because the Diamondbacks had a wonderful walkoff on opening day
when we had just started doing this podcast back in 2002.
Obviously, we started during the tail end of one of the worst seasons in baseball.
However, started off with a walk-off on opening day, which happened to also be National Beer Day.
And it was by this man, Seth Beer.
The nickname Sethservesa, that's not mine.
I cannot claim credit for that.
That is all David Peralta.
He would call Seth Beer, Sethservesa, around the clubhouse.
And I immediately needed a shirt that said that.
So this little beauty was created and it's still, still one of my favorite shirts of all time.
Of course, you can get lots of your favorite shirts over at our merchandise store right now, by the way, which for today only got merch over at the PHNX shop for 30% off as part of Spirit Week.
That is today only.
So make sure to go check that out.
And that's not the only thing we're cooking up around here.
We are also, I don't know if you noticed down there, we got our little fundraiser going on right now.
and as part of all city spirit week,
we're teaming up with Big Brother Big Sisters of America,
an incredible group that creates life-changing mentorship opportunities
for kids across this country.
We've set a goal of $10,000, but quite frankly,
we'd like to smash right through that.
And we can, hopefully, with your help.
Of course, this is not a super chat situation.
There's a fun razor link at the bottom there in YouTube that you can see, I believe.
You can donate using the link in the video or in the description.
And if you want to make an even bigger impact,
You can also sign up to become a big by visiting BBBS.org slash all city.
And all we want to do is do something meaningful together, especially this week.
This is a program that's very near and dear to my heart.
I've been part of mentorship programs in the past.
In fact, I mentored at one point a small child that went on to become DBAX broadcaster.
In fact, he was my co-host at one point on the show.
It was Jesse Friedman.
So mentorship programs do a lot for a lot of people.
But no, all jokes aside, I did for a different company, I did dual mentorship program.
And let me tell you, it was for me personally, it was one of the most uplifting things I ever did.
And again, it can really change, you know, directly impact a young person's life.
So get out there and do something positive for your society, for your community, not what the Red Sox did.
Don't do what the Red Sox keep doing to the National League West and making this a tougher division.
Can we stop?
When do the Diamondbacks get a player from the NLS?
I have so much shade to throw at the Boston Red Sox.
But as many of you know, they did make what will probably be considered the greatest trade of this trade deadline already.
Like we haven't even gotten close to the trade deadline already.
And the most impactful trade has already probably been made.
The Boston Red Sox have traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.
You might know them.
They're our division rival.
They're above us right now in the standings.
Boston, meanwhile, received four dudes.
That's what they got.
They got left-handed starter, Kyle Harrison, who has already been optioned to their
AAA team.
They got right-hander Jordan Hicks, which will, I'm assuming, be moved to their bullpen,
back where Hicks was, I believe, for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Outfield prospect James Tibbs III and rookie league right-hander Jose Bello.
Now, I was talking with the guys today, and I don't want to discredit any of these players
because what the Boston Red Sox got in return was young talent for their farm system.
And these guys could one day be, you know, this could be a trade where we're laughing
about what the, you know, giants gave up in regards to what they received from Boston Red Sox.
I just have a feeling that that is not the case here.
If you remember, if you haven't been paying attention at all to the Raphael Debr's saga,
it's a fairly unfair situation that was thrust upon their superstar.
This all kind of stems from the Boston Red Sox suddenly acquiring Alex Brighman
during the offseason, right?
So Raphael Devers plays third base.
Alex Brighman also plays third base.
According to reports, Devers was told that he was not going to be moved from third base
and that Brighman would in fact be playing second.
According to members of the media, they never saw Braggman.
Regman take one ground ball at second base.
It was all,
it was all him preparing to play third.
So nothing in regards to that.
But this is a wild,
wild situation, by the way.
And of course, in reality,
what you could look at here is Rafael Devers was a third baseman,
who then had another all-star third baseman acquired to his team.
Again, told that he wasn't going to be moved.
Then he was moved to DH.
So Breggman could play third.
They asked Devers to play first base, which he refused.
And then suddenly now he became a problem.
He was the diva here.
He was the guy that was not being a team player, right?
I don't know what to say in regards to that.
In listening to the situation that I just described,
I feel like the Boston Red Sox put him in an unfair position, right?
And perhaps a position not to succeed.
And I can understand his frustration with the situation.
I can understand the Boston Red Sox being a bit frustrated with one of their players not essentially doing what they ask of them.
However, that's why you ask it of them, right?
Tori has said many times in many, many post-game scrums, pre-game.
I'm just in talking to Tori.
He's talked about how he's asked players about their feelings on things and what they would like to do and what this and that, right?
one of the things that comes to mind is Cotel Marte.
Just the other day, Tori told us that Cotel Marte didn't really want to hit anywhere in the starting
lineup besides first or second.
Now, to be honest, Damon, right?
That sounds like if you wanted to frame that in a certain way, that could sound like Diva
behavior.
Like, oh, the guy refuses to hit anywhere besides where he wants to in the lineup.
And quite frankly, it could fit the narrative and people might run with it.
Right.
Like that's one thing to me that again, sometimes you ask players to do things.
And when they say no, it's the reason why you ask them and you respect their wishes as a member of your franchise, especially an all-star like Raphael Devers.
Instead, they made this guy to kind of be the toxic one in this relationship.
And I don't know if I view it that way.
I do.
You do.
Yeah, I don't know.
Maybe people don't agree with me.
But I don't know.
Jacob kind of says it here.
And I mean, I think he's being tongue in cheek, obviously.
And like, I'm not just speaking about Pernomo here.
But, like, I think that this organization has a locked in team that is willing to do whatever it takes to win.
That's fair.
Rafael Devers, I'm looking at his baseball savant the last two years, minus six about outs above average, eighth percentile range in 2024.
Fourth percentile range minus eight outs above average in 2023.
Right.
He's an awful defensive third baseman.
Right.
Why wouldn't you put somebody of Alex Brigman's caliber over there at third base and put him
I think the Red Sox screw up in terms of, you know, miscommunicating.
But in terms of what they're asking him to do, I think it's completely fair.
Like the guy doesn't belong out on the field.
He should be DH or first base 100%.
It's based on the way you handle it, right?
And yeah, like sometimes you do get benched when you don't want to.
Sometimes you get moved to a position you don't want to get moved to.
Sometimes you have to platoon and you'd rather play every day, right?
Like that's a factor of the game.
maybe Devers is in the wrong, but the Boston Red Sox, I think, made a huge mistake here,
just like they did with Mooky Betts.
They moved on from a guy that they are going to be sorry about moving on from.
And I think that this is all kind of petty, to be honest.
But I also am not in that clubhouse.
I don't know the kind of impact that Devers is having there.
This all happened on the heels of the Boston Red Sox sweeping the New York Yankees.
many Red Sox podcasts and shows wanted to be happy today
and having a great show,
having a great time talking about that.
Instead,
what they're talking about is losing one of their best players
to the San Francisco Giants for what many consider to be,
you know,
prospects besides Jordan Hicks there.
And I mean,
they are pretty much all prospects with Kyle Harrison being sent to AAA.
I just,
I don't know why the Red Sox keep doing that to this division.
I think,
Damon,
we might have the best,
Tori may have said it best,
and he said it in spring training when the,
when Blake Snell was acquired.
Here's what Tori had to say.
Oh, okay.
Well, we'll get that here,
but what does this mean for the Diamondbacks chances overall?
This is not great for the Diamondbacks chances overall in the NL West.
It doesn't mean that they should stop trying to play,
considering the Giants are just one team.
And you don't know how the impact of this trade is going to,
affect the Giants and what they have going on. Right now, they're very successful this year.
The addition of Devers makes the Giants a very dangerous team. So far this year, the Giants' strengths
has been their pitching. Their bullpen is one of, if not the best in all of, in all of Major
League Baseball. And really what they needed was a bat, a power bat like this to be added to
their lineup to make them more dangerous. And they got it. Not only did they get it, but they get
it significantly before the trade deadline, which allows them to still continue to make additional
moves to improve that team and kind of go all in on this season. And that's going to impact,
I feel going to impact what the Diamondbacks do here, right? But I mean, you know, the biggest
thing here is, again, the NOS gets better. Do we have Tori? And this was a while ago, but it's an
evergreen comment.
Yeah, I wish the best players would quit coming to the NOS.
That's what the first thing is, right?
Me too, Tori.
Me too.
Well, I guess what this means overall in a surprising statement from Mike Hazen is that
the Diamondbacks are in fact going to be buyers at the trade deadline.
And I know that this probably surprised a lot of people.
Of course, there's still a lot of time for the Diamondbacks to screw this up.
So I don't think anything that Mike Hazen says.
is written in stone here, but Hazen had some very encouraging comments about what the
Diamondbacks are going to be trying to do here at the trade deadline.
Here's what Mike had to say.
I bring around that line of thought.
I get it.
Yes, it probably objectively makes a lot of sense to want to, you know, load up for some
imaginable future.
You know, I would have thought I'd have Corbyn Byrds and Justin Martinez and AJ
Park for the entirety of this season.
That didn't know that great for us.
So, you know, me planning for acquiring 10 prospects that may or may not make us a good team.
It's just hard for me to wrap my brain around that.
It's hard for me to watch out hard.
These guys are grinding every day and then take the trap door and rip it out from underneath them, honestly.
And we kind of do these jobs to take shots and win.
Those four guys that you mentioned, I built the team with those four guys knowing they were going to be three agents at the end of the year.
And we had every intention of going for it with that same collection of guys.
And so, look, as long as we're playing well, and I believe that this team has the gas in the tank to go get it, we're going to try to add to this team.
I don't really find it all that fun to sit there in August and September and go to the ballpark every day knowing you're going to get your butt kicked.
Like, that's not really exciting for me, to be honest with you.
I've done that for a few seasons.
And that stinks.
And I have no real intention to go and do that in all honesty.
Now, I'm not an idiot.
I'm not going to sit there and just, you know, throw bad money after bad.
If, you know, we're not in a position, we take on more injuries, our depth gets thinned out to the point where it's going to be very hard for us to cobble something together to chase into a wild card race where we're down behind five different clubs.
And let me just say this, the National League is what it is.
It's a really tough league.
And we know that, but I think we're tough too.
And I'm not sure that when we walk into town, teams are celebrating either.
when we walk in for three games.
So hopefully we give those teams a lot to think about and a lot to handle.
And hopefully by the end of July, we're one of those teams that's clawing at those five teams,
six teams maybe, to go by.
And that's what my intention is to be on.
Those comments were from the MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM,
and they were prior to the trade of Raphael Devers to the Giants.
So I wonder how that would impact Mike's thinking here on this.
but I do like how he phrased that, right?
Obviously, there's things that could impact his decisions between now and the end of July,
which could definitely change his decision on that,
kind of force his hand a bit on what the Diamondbacks do there at the trade deadline.
But he doesn't want that.
None of us want that.
The Diamondbacks don't want that.
The guys that are here are here for a reason, and they've been contributing.
What we saw out of this team, I mean, there's, there's,
only been two other baseball teams in the entire history of major league baseball that have three
victories like the diamondbacks had on on saturday right three victories where they've come back for
four runs or more in the ninth inning to win a baseball game and the diamondbacks have three
by their 70th game of the season or 71st game of the season right so this team is special
and the one thing about them is they don't quit the offense doesn't quit it's inconsistent
The pitching is inconsistent.
There's a lot of inconsistencies about this team,
but the consistency and confidence is growing,
and it feels like once again the situation,
and I've said this probably far too many times on this show,
but it seems to be galvanizing this team
and bringing them together.
They're playing some of their best baseball of the season right now,
and it just feels like what Mike's saying
is the right attitude to kind of have, right?
Again, the Diamondbacks know deep down inside
that they're still playing for this.
team to stay together beyond the trade deadline. They know that. So it's it, but it's got,
it has to be encouraging to the players to hear Mike Hazen say something like that publicly. Like how,
how much he wants to be a buyer at the deadline, this team kind of has to go out there and do
everything they can to, to, to make him that. They can't worry about what the giants do,
because essentially, you know, the giants are just one team in this division. And,
and they're just one of the tough teams in this division. They did get better. Uh, and the diamond
backs do play them. Like, really?
We couldn't wait until after the Diamondbacks play them.
There was plenty of time between the series at the end of this month and the trade deadline.
But we will get to see Rafael Devers right here at Chase Field with Diamondbacks take on the Giants.
And we do still have tickets available to our pool party takeover.
So make sure to check that out over at go phtonx.com slash merch or not merch, event slash events.
So make sure to check that out.
Speaking of the NL West or the N hell West or the drunken orgy of violence getting tougher,
showing Otani will pitch tonight for the first time versus the San Diego Padres, right?
And again, it's caused ticket sales for that game to spike through the roof.
I believe the cheapest ticket now is somewhere in the neighborhood of like $185 or $200 for that game.
But it's going to be interesting to see how Otani now pitching will play into the Dodgers plan, right?
Yeah, like Otani's an incredible pitcher, and that's not good for us.
the rest of the division that Otani is back, but it does feel like, you know, that with, with the
amount of injuries we've seen in baseball this season and the amount of, I guess, playing time,
they're asking from Otani. It feels inevitably like this has to end in disaster, right? I mean,
I'm not hoping for that. But, hey, you know, whatever. But it's going to be interesting to see how
Otani pitches returning to the game. It feels like the Dodgers are confident that he's going to be back
at full strength.
So R.A. in the comment says
Dodgers fans won't arrive in time to see him pitch.
You're right about that.
They definitely won't.
It'll probably be gone by the fourth inning for sure.
Maybe that's the...
I'm a hater today.
I'm full of hate.
My hate is pretty much aimed.
It's funny, I should be mad at the Giants, right?
I should be mad at the Giants for getting better and being a tougher opponent.
But I'm not.
I'm not.
I'm angry at the Boston Red Sox.
And I think I know why they do.
did that to us, but in order for me to reveal that, David, I need some shade throwing music.
So if you wouldn't mind, give me something extra angry and spicy today.
Austin Red Sox, what in the actual hell are you doing?
Why do you keep trading your best players to this division?
Why do you keep mortgaging your future?
What are you doing?
What, you are a big market team.
You are supposed to keep guys like this and add more guys to it.
You're not supposed to trade Raphael Devers for what many have classified as four guys?
What the hell are you doing?
Not only that, but didn't you learn your lesson from Muky Betts?
Was Muky Betz not enough?
Did you not regret what Muky Betts did?
I know it wasn't even this regime that did that.
But my God, you didn't even learn your lessons from the history?
This is why we can't go out there and get rid of these history books.
People don't learn as it is.
It's not even long-term history.
It's the short-term history.
You get to watch and play for the Dodgers every day.
And I know what this is about because you refuse to trade any of your good players for the Diamondbacks.
This is all about Mike Hazen, isn't it?
Oh, boy, you wanted Mike Hazen back so bad.
You were like, oh, Mike, call me.
You were sending him flowers.
You were being like, hey, what's up?
You up?
Like text messages at 2 o'clock in the morning?
We saw him because he's with us now.
And you are just mad about it.
And you'll never let it go.
And you know it.
This is the exact reason why you keep doing this to us.
our division. I don't know what to tell you. He's happier with us now. He's staying here. He prefers
the dry climate than the warm weather. And I don't know what to tell you, but you can't have
him back and trading all of your players to this division so that we lose is a crafty way to go
about it, but it's not going to work. All right, David, that's all I got. Kevin's out here
watching it. Looks good work. It looks like I'm a bear in a zoo over here. Get out of here. Scram,
you guys. All right, but, uh, yeah, Jay Cuddy's.
says it best imagine being a red sox fan to me i'd call out i'd call out of work dude literally imagine
being a red sox fan we were talking about this right before the show derrick like you're a red sox
fan you're a big market franchise you've been good you're basically at least from my age like if you're
around my age you've been good your whole life oh yeah your whole life a contender if not like maybe not
playoff team every year but still a team that you would expect to be good every single and then you
win a world series with mookie bets with this core you immediately try
trade him to the team you beat in the World Series for Jeter Downs.
I'm sorry?
And Alex Verdugo?
I mean, Alex Verdugo is a Tucson guy.
Everyone knows I rep the Tucson guy.
I got the Sidewinder's hat on.
Alex Verdugo is the most mid-baseball player in the league.
That's who you traded for mooky bets.
And then now you give Raphael Devers to the Giants for a ham sandwich and a packet of peanuts, Derek?
This is disgusting.
Yeah.
It's disgusting.
Yeah, you should be bad.
You should be mad.
And another bone I want to pick, and I'm sure we'll get into this
because someone's probably going to ask a question in mailbag about it.
But I just have to say, like, dude, the amount of debacks fans that are like trying to be like, you know, let's sell, let's just sell.
Let's give up on this.
It's punt.
It's like you have an elite lineup in place.
Yeah.
Regardless of how Zach has pitched this season, how inconsistent he is, I know everybody is frustrated by him.
He is still a top of the line starting pitcher.
he'll be paid like so.
Merrill Kelly is one of the best number two is probably in the entire league.
You have two good starting pitchers, right?
You need three for a playoff rotation, okay?
You have an elite lineup.
You have an awful bullpen with a couple of decent pieces.
That's not a team that you give up on, in my opinion, Derek.
I just don't know why everyone is so like everyone wants to quit.
And it's just loser behavior to me.
I think it's taken so long for Mike Hazen and Tori Lovolo to,
build this culture around this franchise that we're not losers we we're going for it we're trying
to win and everybody is so quick to just be like oh they got raphael devers let's just quit we're the
red sox some unbelievable team with raphael devers he's i mean he's proven he could hurt their
chemistry no no so like i don't i don't i just don't understand the idea that like we all let's
just it's it's over you know it's mid june we're above 500 we should just sell the entire team off
Crazy.
Yeah.
I mean, when you look at Raphael Devers numbers, they're good, but he's batting 272, 401 with a 504 slug for 905 OPS.
He has 15 home runs and 58 RBI.
And like, I think the big thing there is, is that he's a really good hitter that you know is moving from a bad environment to a good one.
There's a good chance that he's going to be even more productive than he was as a member of the Red Sox.
However, that is not the team that we have basically 100 more games against.
the Diamondbacks have their own internal battle to worry about,
but if they can get that figured out,
then this team is a playoff contender,
and they don't need to necessarily beat the Giants
in order to make that happen, right?
But again, it's-
You need to beat the Padres probably with how things are going, and they did.
That's very true.
They just beat them in a series.
They sure did.
And we're going to talk about that on the other side of this break.
So don't you go anywhere?
You're watching the P.H. Next Diamondback show.
I'm going to keep these on,
because all pro-shade concepts keeps things shady around here.
And of course, you can extend your outdoor living space with a custom fit awning.
Or you can also get some roll-down patio shades that block the sun and keep your patio up to 20 degrees cool here.
Damon, not only are they roll-down patio shades, which sounds, it almost takes away from how cool they are.
They have rolled-down patio shades that will basically turn your outdoor living space, your patio, into a room.
Like they come all the way down to the ground.
It's like you just had four walls come down.
It's to me, I don't know, I'm an old guy.
I'm jealous of espos.
Oh, yeah, he likes to rub it in our face all the time with how cool his are.
And his are on the inside, right?

Some people wanted Sean to pause's thoughts
on the whole Red Sox trade situation.
I'm sure Sean is not taking any phone calls today.
I imagine Sean has called out of work.
He's not doing what chaos.
He's not going to do anything.
He's not going to be on the internet.
I mean, or he is going to be on the new internet.
I don't know.
Wherever he is, he's screaming.
Like, I know, Sean.
I know how he would come into this office.
And someone right now is listening to Sean Deppar's scream about Raphael Devers or Jordan Hicks or the organization.
And that's the thing.
You say like he's not he's not honest.
I guarantee you he's on his phone.
Oh yeah.
He'll never log off.
Yeah, no, that's true.
Me and him are very much cut from the same cloth.
He's off there just looking for an altercation.
If something fires us up, we have to let everyone know about it, you know?
You're right.
Well, you know, it fired me up.
The Diamondbacks come back on Saturday.
What the hell did we see, Damon?
What the hell did this Diamondbacks team do?
Again, just the third team in MLB history to have four comeback, or three comebacks, excuse me,
of four runs or more in the ninth inning.
And they did it again to walk off the Padres and take the series there.
And I just don't even know what this team is.
But I know the engine is Raldo Pardomo.
I know the engine, the motor of this team is Roldo Pardoma.
You can call it the captain.
You can call it the heart.
I don't care what you call it.
But the man that makes this team go is Roldo Pardom.
Domo. Not only did he score the game tying triple, but that electric, that, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the
on a, on a, on a fielder's choice was maybe more electric than the home run. I don't know. I mean, especially hearing afterwards that he was told not to go, just fires me up in ways that I can't even, uh, express. But, uh, that's what's exciting about this team is, no matter how out of it they seem, they're able to find a way to claw back into it and put together a decent run. We saw it.
We saw it last year.
And like I said, as it stands right now,
the Diamondbacks still have a better record than they did last year when they won 89 games.
So I don't know if that means they're on pace to win 90 games plus.
I have no idea how things are going to go for this team going forward.
They went on a ridiculous run last year,
so I'm sure they're not on pace for 90 wins just yet.
But still doesn't mean that there's not in a very similar spot that they were last year.
I know how things ended, which Damon, honestly,
that goes back to what you were saying.
earlier. The reason why I think our fan base at times has this attitude and wants them to be a seller
is because of what they witnessed last year. Many people have PTSD from the 2024 season and
understandably so. That was a devastating direction for that year to go considering how special
this team seemed from like July 1st beyond, right? Like, but every time you looked over your
shoulder, there were the Padres winning as many games. There were the Mets with grimace going
on a run. It was just absurd
and it never seemed like they could really
distance themselves or do anything to
you know, really
be by themselves in those
standings and, you know, it was
a tough year. Maybe that was it. Maybe the
competition around them made them
go on that run, but they
again, they have to do it again this year. They have to
keep winning games. They did snap their
five game winning streak on Sunday with the loss.
Diamondbacks pitching, by the way.
They are 17 and 0 this season
when allowing two runs or fewer. I know
that sounds like of course but there was a time where this team would give up two runs and still
lose games so i remember that but the offense has been doing their thing of course uh gnos
warres five home runs in his last eight games he now has 20 home runs this season yeah there he is
21 excuse me he's up to 21 there there's that little idiot in the corner i'm gonna look so bad with
that teal beard you guys i'm gonna have to walk around to the grocery store looking like that oh my god well
Well, here's the thing.
I'm not to go to wrestling shows like that.
I have a wrestling show.
Well, that seems like that fits.
That seems like that's a good.
The teal beard for a wrestling show kind of gives you an extra added umph.
No, that's the problem is then people are going to expect it.
I'm going to have to keep the teal beard.
It's going to be like, oh, that's just look now.
Oh, that's his gimmick.
That's still beard guy.
It's all, it's all, look, it's Ocean Havry and old teal beard.
Yeah, I mean, I guess based off of Hayeson's comments, like, you should be written for the opposite, really.
If your priority is the beard here.
Well, yeah.
Like, I don't want to root against this team, but I might just be rooting for Gino to get traded.
Because that still nullifies that.
Michael, I can promise you that when this happens, we will, in fact, make content out of it.
That is a fact.
Just like the hair.
Boy, boy.
Well, the Diamondbacks have homered in 10 straight games.
They have 18 home runs over that stretch.
So the offense has been getting it done.
But Merrill Kelly on Sunday had probably his second worst outing.
of the years since that really bad outing against the Yankees.
He went in. He gave up seven hits, four earned runs.
He only lasted five innings, walked one, struck out seven.
Not a terrible day, not a disaster like you would consider that Yankees performance.
So still, like the Yankees is way up here and then way down here and second is this Sunday.
But again, it was just a bit disappointing.
I think with Merrill on the mound, we all thought that had a good chance to go out there on Father's Day and complete the sweep.
but Dimack still win the series against the Padres
and that's what you need to take away right now.
The Diamondbacks really do need at this point to win series.
They can't sweep everything.
We can't expect them to sweep,
but they can win series.
And they have a very tough series coming up here in Toronto
against the Blue Jays that starts tomorrow.
Let's take a look at the Toronto Blue Jays at a glance.
They have been playing some very good baseball as of late.
They are 38 and 33 this season.
They do have a minus 12 run differential.
Their starting pitching has not been very good.
I think that's a chance to jump all over that,
especially with how good the Diamondbacks offense has been this year.
They are 6 and 4 in their last 10.
Like I said, that starting pitching ERA, 4.65, good for 26th in Major League Baseball.
Damon, guess who's 25th?
The Diamondbacks.
Yeah, they sure are, buddy.
They sure are.
Meanwhile, really pitching, not bad for the Blue Jays.
3.65 ERA, which is good for 11th.
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks, no, I'd kill for 11.
Nowhere near that.
Nowhere near that.
I'd commit crimes for 11th.
And then outs above average, this team very good defensively.
You know that because Dalton Varsho is over there.
Yeah, that's all Dalton Varshow.
They actually have a negative outs above average if Dalton Varshow wasn't in left field.
15 outs above average.
They're good enough for fourth in baseball.
I will say that, you know, again, this is the Blue Jays.
they have been they've been playing unexpectedly good baseball they were one of the teams that were
apparently in on the debors thing there was a couple of other teams trying to get devors away from
red sox i knew they'd never trade them to a division rival but uh the other teams included
the podrays so it very much felt it very much felt like no matter what the red sox
are going to make sure that devors ended up in the nl west uh let's take a look though at
the probable pitchers for this series i think the diamondbacks again have uh i don't know i mean
this is weird this is probably the the three-man group that i have the least confidence in by far right now
right but again edwardo rodriguez has not been bad in his two outings since returning
to the lineup he has a sub three five a r a he's two and oh in those two games i mean not not bad
ryan nelson was excellent his last time out if the diamondbacks can get more of that ryan
nelson then i feel a little bit confident here you know but again these eras are ugly for the diamondbacks
actually have going in game one, Brandon Fod, who's 8 and 4 with a 5.50 ERA, which is just preposterous.
It's preposterous how fast his ERA got this bad, mostly because of that yes hitter.
But it's the story of Brandon Fod, I feel like.
Like, if you, I bet you in his last, his previous two seasons, if you, like, erased his, like, three worst outings,
his ERA would drop, like, an entire one.
Yeah, like two, two, two.
You know what I mean?
Like, like, right now, this 5-5 ERA is.
because of a two, three-start stretch where he just blew it.
I mean, there was basically one game, like he didn't pitch, but he got eight earned runs added to his ERA, basically.
It's like he didn't even go out there pitch, but eight earned runs were just randomly.
And that's where, like, honestly, I'd rather have that than a consistent 5-5-ERA guy, right?
Because at least he's, like, keeping you in games.
That's probably why he has an eight and four record is because those eight wins, he's been great.
He has been great.
And then those four losses, he's putrid.
It kind of doesn't make any sense.
but goes up against Chris Bassett for the Toronto Blue Jays,
who's 7 and 3.7 and 3.70 ERA and 78 strikeouts this year.
Meanwhile, Erod there in game two, he's 2 and 3 with an ugly 6.27 array.
He's going up against the elusive TBD.
Always a hard guy to predict.
Always a hard guy to predict what he's going to do in an outing.
And then Ryan Nelson finishes things up here in game three.
He is 3 and 2 with a 4.14 ERA.
He goes up against Kevin Gassman, who's 5 and 5 with a 4.08 ERA.
And again, the Blue J's starting pitchers are pretty good,
but the ERAs don't really reflect it,
and they're still kind of figuring things out,
just like the Diamondbacks are as well.
It's like the talent on that team is better than the ERA indicates,
and you could definitely say the same thing about the Diamondbacks.
This is their toughest series between now and the end of the month,
and then I'm not going to call them trap games or trap series,
but the Diamondbacks have some business to take care of.
And again, Tori, Tori has said at time again about doing your job.
The Diamondbacks have a job to do against the next teams they play after this Blue Jays team.
But first, they have to focus on taking care of business against a good team.
Each series that they have against a team with a winning record who's contending in their division
moves them a little bit closer to that end goal of Mike Hazen being a buyer.
You might have those freak losses.
You might have those sweeps in Cincinnati where the weather,
was against us and so was MLB and the umpires.
But what you have is those series where they play a good team that's playing good baseball,
they proved here at least in this Padres series that they're never out of it.
I don't know if you could even say, like they played a great game in game one, quite frankly.
The Diamondbacks were dominant in game one against the Padres.
Game two, it may be called a fluke.
But how many times can the Diamondbacks come back late and it not be a fluke?
it be considered more about the fact that these guys are the comeback kids
and they don't really say die just because they're down three plus four plus runs late
in the game, right?
The majority of the season,
their scoring has been done in the seventh inning and beyond.
They're first in baseball in regards to that.
Yeah, some things have gone sideways on them,
including that Cubs series that I really think that game where they came back and
still ended up losing really just screwed things up for this team and made them,
made it worse.
You know, like really, really cause them to lose that confidence in themselves.
But I don't know.
I still think that I agree with Mike and I think that this team is worth investing in and moving forward.
You don't need to wave the white flag on this season as long as the team is within shouting distance of a wildcard spot.
And that includes having Rafael Devers in this division.
So screw the Giants and screw the Boston Red Sox.
Let's go out there and win us some games.
And win us a pennant.
What do you say?
Win us a World Series.
Who says no? Damon? I know Damon doesn't say no to that, but we I just believe in this lineup so much, Derek.
I do to your point. It's just like, how can't pitching win you championships.
Totally. And this team sucks. And this team needs pitching. Well, this organization can't figure out pitching. We know that. But the lineup, you can't give up on this lineup, man. You can't give up on the heart that this team has. And like you, you, you sit down, Corby and Cajal Marte, Heraldo Perdomo, Gino Suarez. Sit them down in a room and tell them we're giving up on you guys and see how that goes.
that's just not, that's not how you build an organization.
I imagine 90% of those guys would probably tell you to your face that they're not giving up on them.
You know what I mean?
So, uh, they, El Gaios right.
They have an elite offense and they've proven that this season.
They just need the pitching to step up and be average.
Get us to average.
Get us to get us to be in 13th in the league, 14, 15th, 16th in the league.
This team will win a lot of baseball games.
You know what I don't blame it on is Brian Kaplan, believe it or not.
And we're going to talk about that on the other side of this break.

And Jacob says he's hot, but is Jacob in this building right now?
Does Jacob know what it's like to have to walk across this quad, Damon, from our parking garage here?
I'm not even sure Jacob's even stepped outside today.
I don't think he stepped outside this week.
Happy Father's Day, by the way, Jacob.
Yeah, we love you.
Big, big Jake.
Speaking of Big Jake, he's a staple around here.
And Mondays are a staple around here.
You know why?
Because every year is our year.
this show every year is the year of the snake every month on this show is black history month
every month on this show is women's history month and every month on this show is black women's
history month every single week is shark week every single day is earth day but monday mondays are
special on monday we go the mailbag damon all right what do we got something interesting in my mailbox
i'm trying to get to everything in my mailbox and then once in a while there's a letter that makes me go
All right.
Sorry if I blew anyone's ears.
No, that's fine.
That's how loud it should be.
It was because of my screaming.
It just made it extra loud today.
What do you got in the mailbag for us today?
First question comes from Michael Rokicke.
Should Corbin and Perdomo flip in the lineup?
Corbyn seems too aggressive to lead off with power better suited for hitting third.
Meanwhile, Jerry's approach makes more sense for the leadoff.
Michael, I believe that this is exactly what Derek and I were talking about, like, last week regarding how Ketel doesn't want to hit third.
And we were like, cool, he can hit second.
And Jerry can hit first.
Corbin can hit third.
It sounds like we perfectly made exactly what we want with this lineup.
I mean, the only thing here is the idea of Geraldo Perdomo being a risk king, right?
And I think that's the thinking here on Tori.
Is that Corbyn-Carrul-Carrick gets on base, Ketel-Marté gets on base, and Jerry just gets the job done with runners in scoring position.
So if you can get a guy on third, guy in scoring position, and you have Jerry come up third, then boom.
But I think, unfortunately, the numbers don't really reflect that he has been doing well.
in that third spot, even though logically it makes all the sense in the world to put him there, right?
So I love this idea because I think Pardomo has the ability to be a great leadoff hitter.
And quite frankly, once the lineup turns around, it's not like he's always going to be the lead off hitter in every inning.
You're going to have chances where maybe an Alec Thomas, who's been much better at the plate gets on base.
And then you have Pudomo have a chance for runners in scoring position.
You also have guys like Herrera or Gabby Moreno hitting down there at the bottom end.
lined up Tim Tawa who's been doing all right offensively.
So there's a lot of reasons why Pardomo hitting there works.
I think the only thing I'd like logically I would say keep it this way.
And maybe that's the idea is maybe Tori's mom is right because Tori's mom is who wanted
Perdomo to hit third and she's a very smart lady.
So maybe you let Prudomo kind of get through this and get over that mental hump of whatever's
causing him to not hit as well there.
So you just imagine how angry the Tory haters were when they heard about.
Tori's mom suggesting lineup changes.
You know, it's funny because I think that's the difference between me and some of those people.
Tori is a very open person.
So there are certain things I think that Tori has said in his past that has caused people to kind of get fed up with him.
And it's people that like the macho tough guy manager, right?
Tori's not that.
Tori's he's a guy that loves his players and openly talks about it.
He's a pretty sensitive guy.
And he talks about his feelings, you know, when he told people that he went to go suck his thumb,
and eat chocolate peanut butter ice cream.
People didn't like that.
You know,
people were like,
that's weak.
That's,
you know,
that's beta.
That's,
uh,
all this stupid crap that they said about it.
And I mean,
similar to this,
right?
I like that my manager is a human being.
I love that my manager is a human being.
I love that his mom knows more about baseball than most of us will ever know.
She has more knowledge about baseball in her little pinky than most of us will
ever know about baseball.
And,
uh,
she's,
I mean,
she's,
she's,
she's basically part of the UCLA program.
You know what I mean? Like this lady knows her stuff. So the fact that Tori is open-minded enough to listen to this and also once again
Willing to give his mom credit in a press conference and say like yeah, I did it because my mom told me to
I love that I love that about him and I'm sorry that people don't I understand that people don't but I think that that's kind of the reason
You're either a person that like someone being open like that or you don't so I don't know I'm a fan I'm a fan
Well else we got there Damon oh by the way going back to that I do think that that's a good idea and I would totally be
down for the Diamondbacks to do that.
It would just be interesting to see how Perdomo, the opportunities Perdomo gets with runners
in scoring position hitting leadoff versus hitting later in the lineup.
And I think that's my biggest concern is, you know, he leads all short stops.
And I believe he's fifth or sixth in Major League Baseball with runners in scoring position with
the amount of RBI he has.
So I don't know.
It's one of those like if it's not broke.
It's insane, man.
But I do understand 100% wanting to get Geraldo Perdomo more at bats.
Imagine if I told Jesse that like two years ago, like, hey, by the way, like, we're going to be like at the All-Star break and Pardomo is going to have more RBI than Bobby Witt and Francisco Lindor.
Yeah.
He'd be like, the hell are you talking about.
You are drunk again, Damon, obviously.
Yeah, no, for sure.
No, this is real life.
Yeah, this is real life.
This is real life.
All right.
Let's do one more, Damon.
And then we got to go to a quick break.
Next question comes from Flea Ball says Corbin has more strikeouts than Gino.
He actually leads the team in strikeouts.
That has to be a concern, right?
especially for a leadoff hitter, which, funny enough, big Jake just said that in the chat.
No way a guy like him should be top 15 in the league in case.
Yeah, no, I know.
I think that the big problem here is the power, right?
Corbin has 20 home runs.
And I think, again, if you heard Corbyn had 20 home runs, you would think that this would be in August or September, not Corbyn coming out of, you know, May, early June with 20 home runs, right?
So I feel like that's been a little bit of the problem.
He sacrificed a bit of his power.
and that's why what Michael Rokickey makes a lot of sense, right?
You kind of lean into it.
The reason why you have Corbyn hitting lead off
was because of his on-base percentage
and his ability to not only get on-base,
but to turn a single into a double,
to turn a double into a triple,
to steal bases, to cause havoc and cause chaos, right?
So I think that it made sense at one time.
However, Corbyn's kind of stepped into this power-hitter role.
And it's not even just a power hitter.
Once again, his slugging percentage is,
crazy because he's the amount of bases he gets and that's because he turns your average double into a triple.
He turns, you know, normal hits into that, but he's just not getting on basis frequently.
He's striking out a lot and a bet.
And it's because of that power.
You know, again, he's swinging for the fences more and you're seeing it reflected in his on base percentage and his ability to get walks and other things.
But I don't know.
It's like what I guess I turn it around and say, what would you sacrifice him not hitting home runs and not having the season he's having power?
wise for him to go back to more singles and more on base percentage? I don't know. Maybe I've talked about
it before and I've heard pitchers say it many times, but that that crap bothers them way more than
getting a home run that clears the bases. So it's interesting and I do think Michael is definitely
on to something there with at least giving it a shot and seeing how it works, you know, just seeing
if Corbyn hitting third and Perdomo getting on as the lead off hitter can, you know, help this offense
even more. I just don't think it's the offense. I think the offense is running fine and I really
don't think that we need to make changes to it. I think we really need to figure out what the hell is going
on with this pitching staff and, you know, specifically, you know, the starting pitching. Like the
bullpen is kind of coming into its own just a little bit, but the starting pitch is still very
inconsistent. But we have so many more questions to answer. We just got started. But we are going to
get to those questions on the other side of this break. Don't you go anywhere. You're watching the
PHNX Diamond Back Show. I blame Raphael Devers for how far we're behind. No, you know what?
I blame the Boston Red Sox, but you know who I don't blame Wendy's and their delicious
Frosty Shop? Because even though Wendy's took a classic and decided to change it up, they did a good
job, unlike what the hell the Boston Red Sox are doing with their team. The Frosty now comes in
some wonderful flavors, including the Frosty Swirl and Frosty Fusion lineup, where you can, of course,
have your base flavor still in chocolate or vanilla. And it's still the same creamy,
treat you boys love but now with a flavor refresh we have of course some frosty swirls that
now include a swirl of strawberry brownie batter or caramel so make sure to check those delicious
flavors out and they also have they're thoroughly blended and mixed frosty fusions which it
feature oreo brownie with some oreo pieces in there you got caramel crunch and of course my favorite
the pop-tarts strawberry would just that's right whole chunks of straw pop tarts in there with
strawberry uh of course you can still get vanilla not going to blame you for getting your basic vanilla
basic chocolate, but definitely try out
these delicious new flavors from
Frosty, from Wendy's.
Whether flavor, whatever flavor you're
craving, odds are they've got a frosty
for it right now. So clock in for a sweet treat
anytime, including midnight or later,
with Wendy's all new frosty flavors.
A refresh on a classic, got to be Wendy's
at participating U.S. Wendy's. Hours may vary
by location. Definitely not
a refresh on the Boston Red Sox.

Well, I think I can foretell the future and I foresee us going into overtime on this one,
Damon, because we still have a lot of questions in the mailbag.
So I guess I'll just give you the heads up now.
If you're watching it over on GoPHNX.com, just come on over over.
Or watch it on your favorite app, I should say.
Come on over to go phtonx.com.
We're going to keep the action going on over here.
But Damon, what's the next question we got in the mailbag?
Next question comes from Tech Tony G says,
assuming that right now we're in buy mode,
what should we shop for and what assets are movable and have value?
That's a great question.
I feel like, unfortunately, outfielders are a commodity for this Diamondbacks team,
which means there's a good chance that an outfielder could be part of a trade,
perhaps a Jake McCarthy, perhaps or Jorge Barrosa.
It seems like those guys are maybe potential assets that this team can part with.
I can't really foresee them parting ways with any pitching assets because they don't have any of those.
And the ones that they do, they need at this point, for depth considering the amount of pitchers that they've lost.
So I do know that there are some guys within the organization that have been doing well.
We talked about three of those first round picks that are all at Hillsborough right now.
I mean, not to say that you'd want to lose a Slade Caldwell or a Ryan Waldschmidt, but perhaps someone's high on Drew Jones still, despite his performance.
you know, recently. And I know a lot of people would probably consider that to be maybe a
Dansby-Swanson-level mistake to make, but I just, I don't know if Drew Jones at this point
is a guy that's going to turn things around. But some other team might still very much believe,
Damon, that he could, that he could be an asset for them. He was a second overall pick. So
I'm sure maybe some other organizations might, you know, feel that, and I feel bad saying this,
because Andrew Jones was out there on Sunday for Father's Day with him.
And, of course, Andrew Jones and his success is a big reason why, you know, everybody believes in Drew, right?
But I don't know.
I think that his value isn't great right now.
So there's probably a good chance that, you know, they don't, they don't trade him.
But Robbie Curiel says, let you trade Lawler and a couple of ball prospects for Emmanuel Claisse.
I don't hate that at all.
But I don't know if that's going to happen.
I would trade anything for Emmanuel Claisei.
I would trade you.
Yeah, no, I would trade me.
But see, that would be, no, that'd be a mistake.
No, but that's what I can't trade you.
We've already, we've already seen what happens.
And I know what you mean, but I'm telling you, I want to tell the people at home that I'm willing to do that for you guys.
If you need me to move to Cleveland for Emmanuel Class A to come here.
Cleveland, guys.
Dude, it's a, that's a sacrifice.
That's a freaking sacrifice, guys.
The entire town just smokes stacks.
I don't know if you've ever driven through it, but it's just all smokestacks.
It's one big factor.
The lake caught on fire.
It's not fire.
The lake, the water.
But yeah, I mean, here's where on that.
With regarding Lawler and Drew Jones, they're at their lowest possible value right now.
I don't think that you could get rid of either of those guys because of that specifically.
Yeah.
I, this organization doesn't have a good farm system.
But I'd be willing to trade them.
I just, I need the return.
I think that, you know, it feels good.
And I'm not sure that any team is like, yeah, we'll take Jordan Lawler.
Yeah.
We love it. We want Jordan Lawler.
Well, I don't know, man. I mean, Jordan Lawler goes back down to Reno and immediately just hits one walkoff home run and one game tying home run after the next.
He's the ACE's goat. We've talked about this.
He makes me sick.
He's going to be the all-time leading MLB home run leader.
He's got to get it figured out at a major league level. I believe in that still.
But anyway, I still think he's a third baseman of the future.
I don't know, though. I mean, honestly, like, again, that might be one that hurts, right?
It might be like an Alec Thomas.
It might be someone even on the major league roster in order for the Diamondbacks to be able to upgrade what they feel their needs are.
I feel like bullpen help is the number one target, right?
So they might, adding a closure to this team might have that Paul Seawald effect where all of the bullpen pieces kind of fall in line.
You can have Shelby Miller available as a setup guy that moves some more valuable high leverage pieces up earlier.
So you have, you know, that support there.
And, you know, I don't know, maybe everything falls in the place.
but what else we got damon next question comes from serpient his magic and says he says a do i have
or they say do i have to admit that now giants might be legit team with acquiring devors and how
that move will impact hazin's thoughts b do you think kaplan's biomechanics didn't don't fit well
to our pitchers and ultimately hurt them if not why everyone on this team blows out their elbow okay
i have a definite answer for that second one but for the first one i would say the giants already had a
fairly legitimate team before acquiring Devers.
They were.
It felt a tiny bit fraudulent though, though, right?
They did.
Because their lineup when we played them and the Diamondbacks beat them, right?
In a series, like their lineup is not good.
No.
Devers changes that lineup significantly, right?
Because Devers is that guy in the middle of the lineup that's going to rake with guys on base.
And honestly, the Giants are one of those teams that maybe didn't have any significant power hitters,
but we're still able to generate runs,
kind of in a similar fashion,
in which the Diamondbacks did it for the last few years, right?
Like, we had Jack Peterson and Christian Walker
mashing last year a bit,
but for the most part,
ninembaks have done it these last two years
with the generating bases or generating runs,
you know, on the base path and such.
Now they have that threat.
So yes, they are a threat.
And I do hope that Mike Hazen just doubles down.
Like I said,
those comments were made prior to the Devers,
trade, but I hope this just makes Mike Hayes and go out there and be even more aggressive to
try to improve this team. I don't know if the outlook for the future of the Diamondbacks is great
right now, right? I don't know. But what I do know is that this team's willing to go out there,
spend money to continue making this team good. And I don't doubt that they will continue to do that
in the future, right? And the biggest hope, obviously, is that all of that happens while they are
still here in Arizona playing in Chesa Field.
All of that right now is very still much of in the year, including the future of this team.
Talent-wise, the future of this team for, you know, the city of Phoenix and beyond.
So there's a lot, but that's kind of why winning right now is even more important.
Yeah, they're playing to not trade guys at the trade deadline, but they're also playing
legitimately to make legislators here in the state realize how important this team is to
their constituents, right?
So I understand that.
I'm a mayor.
I know what I'm talking about when it comes to political stuff.
But these people are short-sighted.
And often-
We're going to do these remaining questions in overtime, Derek.
Oh, I already said overtime thing.
You can't call for overtime at 454 minutes.
I can absolutely do that.
That's not a thing.
That's not how that works at all.
It's not overtime on this show.
It's extra innings.
I don't care.
That's a hockey thing.
It's, look at this graphic.
This doesn't go with baseball at all.
Yeah, well, we're going overtime.
So make sure, like I said, join us over here at go phtonx.com.
The second part of that question was the part I wanted to address because I do think that
Brian Kaplan, the pitching coach of this team gets far too much flack for everything that's going
on with it.
Now, from a game planning perspective, there might be things that Kaplan is accountable for or
responsible for.
But at the end of the day, I do not think that this.
has anything to do with Brian Kaplan, at least the injuries.
Brian Kaplan, it's, I guess it's ironic.
It's unfortunate that Brian Kaplan is a guy who really does specialize in the health of athletes
and wasn't able to do anything to prevent these injuries from happening.
But I think we far too often want to find someone to place blame on.
And I don't know if it's because I came from a different time where we didn't blame the
coaches for injuries that happened to the players.
But, I mean, if you want to really blame something, you can blame it on the fact that
guys now are expected to throw a 99 mile per hour sinker.
You can blame it on the fact the guys need to throw a 95 mile per hour slider.
You can blame it on, I think someone else asked earlier in the comments.
I think it was a great, great point.
It was one of the first questions we got or first comments we got.
And it was, does the pitch clock and the speed of the game now impact pitchers getting
injured. All of this very much could impact the the epidemic of pitching injuries that we're
seeing across baseball. The Diamondbacks aren't the only team to have this happen to them,
but they are a team. They are one of the teams that has some of their best players now lost
due to needing Tommy John surgery and having some sort of elbow inflammation, you know,
and they're throwing arm. So I don't necessarily believe that this is the fault of coaches
or the pitching staff or anybody.
I think, I don't think when Brian Kaplan goes out there to the mound to talk to a guy who just let two runners get on,
I don't think he's going out there going, you need to throw the slider harder.
Like, it's not like that, man.
It's not like they're demanding that this breaking stuff gets, you know, harder and harder.
It's the evolution of the game.
You know, we've talked about this when I was a young man.
If you threw 95 miles an hour, you threw gas.
That's average now.
You have to throw like 105 to impress people.
in 2025.
And it's just kind of, it's crazy.
It's,
it's,
it's,
it's,
it's,
it's,
it's things like this that do end up resulting in pitchers
blowing out their arms.
And it's the reason why this is, again,
something that's happening across baseball.
There are some people that can do it, right?
And again,
it's,
uh,
El Gayao says,
uh,
Chapman throws a hundred like it's nothing.
Uh,
he says it's luck and genetics could be mechanics.
Look at Chapman.
Yeah.
And I mean,
again, though,
yeah,
there's,
there's,
there are guys that are going to be able to do it.
Unfortunately,
the rest of the guys like, I mean, it's like everything in life.
There are 10% of people that are going to have abs effortlessly, right?
That's never me.
I'm going to have to work so hard to have abs and maintain abs.
Are you kidding me?
To maintain them once I get them to keep them?
Oh my God.
I'm not going to want to put that much work in.
But I'll tell you this much.
If I did have abs, I would do this show without a shirt every single day.
And that's just me as a person.
The reason why is because I can't acquire abs.
Just like if I could throw 105 miles per hour by working to get there, I would do it all the time, right?
But then that's going to result in me getting injured.
And me doing this show without my shirt on probably would also result in me getting injured in some way.
But it did result in me getting drunk one time.
But that's a whole other story.
I do think that it's kind of I'm a little bit to blame for this because at one point I felt like I kind of was like, Brian Kaplan, you specialize in biomechanics.
Right.
So like I think that really at the end of the day, it kind of.
comes down to this being unfortunate.
I think it's part of the game,
but I don't think that there's anything the Diamondbacks organization did.
And that seems to be the narrative that a lot of people run with.
Like, it's the fault of so-and-so that these pitchers are getting injured.
I don't know if that's the case.
But again, what it should be chalked up to is just unfortunate.
And, you know, really the Diamondbacks have to do their best to kind of,
adapt. And again, they're not the only team in baseball. A lot of baseball teams have gone through
this, and they're figuring out ways to adapt as well. So, uh, but I, I, I implore you. Stop, stop,
blaming the pitching coach. He really is not the reason why these injuries are occurring. I don't
think he's asking anything new or different of these pitchers that is causing them to, you know,
blow out, blow out their, their arm. What else we got, Damon?
Next question comes from Ryan Hanley. He says, I signed the petition to keep Gino on the debacks
yesterday. Mayor, do you care to comment on his team leading 21 bombs?
I do not. I have no comment.
I guess my comment would be sometimes in life you make mistakes. You have regrets.
Sometimes you open your big stupid mouth and you take a bet that was like never going to hit.
And then you're like, well, it could be 40 home runs. And then you regret everything.
I do like the fact that Faj is not only endorsing, but further suggesting that all I need to do is shave off my face hair.
and then I won't have to do that.
But I feel like then that exposes me,
and I don't know if I want to do that, Damon.
It's not a good look under here without the beard.
So it's going to be a sacrifice one way or another.
Do I want to walk around with a dumb teal beard
or do I want to walk around with my stupid fat face out there
with nothing covering it up, nothing to hide behind?
I don't think so.
But what else we got?
Next question comes from PCOcean.
And he says, are you guys disappointed as I am that Zach Allen will miss what might be his final chance to pitch on the East Coast in Toronto?
So much.
If you want to talk about managerial mistakes, it's this.
How did Zach Gallen start not somehow line up with the Toronto Blue Jays?
Zach Gallen remains incredible against East Coast teams, especially.
Does it change in Canada, though?
I mean, because that's a little bit different.
It's a good question.
You know, is he as good up north?
Internationally.
I don't know.
Against New York Yankees in New York, he went six and two-thirds innings.
He allowed three hits, zero earn runs, struck out 13.
Pretty good.
At the Chicago Cubs, however, I don't know, is that East Coast?
Chicago Cubs, he went six innings.
He allowed seven hits, six earn runs.
At the Mets, six innings, two hits allowed, one earn run, eight strikeouts.
Meanwhile, at Atlanta, seven innings, four hits.
One run, three runs, a lot of total, one run, four strikeouts.
And then I guess, I don't know, Cincinnati and the St. Louis, that's Midwest.
We take those out.
Those aren't.
Those don't count.
But yeah, no, maybe.
Peace of Yoshi says, I go by time zones.
All right.
Well, then good.
Yeah, the East Coast time zones for sure.
Good stuff there in the East Coast time zones, also playing against East Coast teams.
So, yeah, a bit disappointed there.
I wish that could just pitch like this all the time and not just when he's playing those teams.
That's all I have to say about that.
Zach's been an anomaly this year, and I don't really know what to expect out of him at any given time.
But I think we have another question about Zach.
So I'll wait to give my thoughts on what's happening with him late in games in a little bit.
But what else we got there, Damon?
Next question comes from basketball and football guy.
In his last three starts, Zach Allen has pitched into the seventh inning in those three starts before.
The seventh he went 18 innings pitch, given up four earned runs, ERA of 2.0.
But in the seventh inning, he has pitched two innings.
and given up five earned runs, ERA of 22 and a half.
What do you attribute his seventh inning struggles to?
Aggressiveness in the strike zone, his fastball,
lack of using his fastball at that point.
Maybe a big part of it is just seeing the lineup for the third time through,
maybe at that point.
Maybe that's it.
Maybe you just need to pull gallon after two times through the lineup.
I believe that was Tori's game plan with Brandon fought when he was in the playoffs, right?
Like, so I don't know.
I mean, obviously, there is something to that.
The problem, see, Mark says Gallencott, Fautitis.
The problem here is the bullpen, right?
And I've seen it recently.
I think we've all seen it.
Tori's been trying his best to get as much out of these guys as possible.
And maybe he's asking too much.
It's not necessarily the length or the pitch count.
It's just how long he's asking them to go.
Like you said, yeah, I mean, Zach Gallen, again,
he had that one outing against Atlanta.
of where he went seven innings, but in his last two starts,
six and two-thirds innings, four earned runs to San Diego Padres,
six and a third, four run runs there.
Prior to that, to the pirates, he went five and gave up five earn runs.
I mean, I don't know.
Zach had this stretch where he gave up 15 earned runs, shoot, 19 earned runs over the course
of four straight starts.
And again, it's just, he's been mid more than he's been elite.
You know, he still has those elite performances,
but there are far more mediocre performances in here than there are good ones.
I mean, in the month of April,
Zach Gowan only had two starts where he allowed two earn runs or less.
The other ones were five run runs, six earn runs,
and then three earn runs in five innings against the brave.
So, yeah, and Gowens had a lot of, like, losses and no decisions this year as well.
So in his 15 games started, he's four and eight.
That's just not what we're used to seeing out of the Diamondbacks wins.
Zach Gallen is on the mound.
I would suggest maybe taking him out earlier.
I don't care.
What the bullpen, I mean, let the bullpen handle it.
Get him out there.
Get him out of there once you've gone through the rotation two times.
All right.
What else we got?
I know that's an easy fix.
That one's probably too easy.
That was right.
That was a little too easy to just announce it that way.
But yeah, I do think that once Zach kind of loses confidence in his fastball there,
everything else kind of tapers off.
Let's get one more in, Damon, and then we got to get out of here.
The last question comes from Nick Ben.
Benjamin says, I wish we had permission to say, puck, yeah, but Tommy John has denied us.
Not really a question.
More of a statement.
More of a statement.
For those of you that may not know, AJ Puck was well on his way to returning.
He was throwing, he was doing the throwing from 90 feet, throwing from 120 feet thing.
And then apparently he had some sort of sensation in his arm that caused him to shut down and go see Dr.
Ella Trache in person, apparently, because before, I guess, the second.
opinion was via, you know, just imagery, imaging being sent over. But not good, not good to hear
this about A.J. Puck. I think Tori Lavello was asked about his concern level and he said it was
moderate. It sounds like there's a good chance that this might not result necessarily in A.J.
puck needing Tommy John surgery, but I don't know. There might have been an update since then.
I was, again, disconnected being a pro wrestling manager this weekend. And sometimes I just fall out of
fall out of the game a little bit there. But I will say that
even in the best case scenario, it sounds like AJ Puck's going to be
shut down and then we'll resume his throwing program, which is
again, is going to result in him missing more time and not being available to the
Diamondbacks as soon as we had hoped for. We were really hoping that by the end of that
60 day L stint that Puck would be returning to the bullpen. As it stands, what the
diamondbacks are going to have to do is just go forward with the pieces that they've got.
They added Anthony Descalfini, Descalfini.
I'm bad at saying names.
You guys know that.
And he didn't have a good debut, but the Diamondbacks, of course, as a whole,
didn't have a great game there on Sunday.
So the Diamondbacks, again, need to figure some things out with their bullpen.
And it looks like they might have to proceed without AJ Puck,
which makes those moves that Mike Hazen was talking about at the trade deadline even more important.
Will they be able to add an arm and what is?
Is that arm going to cost?
Do they add a starting pitcher?
I mean, that's not out of the question.
And if they do, they could potentially move Ryan Nelson back to the bullpen.
So I don't know how everything's going to work out.
But hopefully, much like many of you, I hope to continue to see this team play baseball at a high level and win baseball games and add to this team.
Next in this series, though, against Toronto that starts tomorrow is going to be very important to see how they perform in Toronto against the Blue Jays, who once again,
have been playing some great baseball themselves.
So we will be back tomorrow with another postgame show.
So make sure to join us for that.
We have post game shows scheduled, I believe, for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week.
And then we'll be back at noon on Friday.
So join us for all of that.
Until then, you can follow us on Twitter.
I'm at cap underscore caveman with a K.

Russell Smith says, Derek, do my question.
Did I miss a question from Russell Smith there?
Damon, do we have one still?
That was it in the chat?
No, those were all eight that you gave me.
Oh, I think, no, I think he meant in the chat, but I didn't see it.
So anyway, well, we'll get, we'll get it out there next time, Russell, my apologies.
Let me see if he, if you typed in something.
Oh, okay, please.

Have yourself a great day off.
Go do something non-Baseball related and non-Raphael Devers related.
And then come back here tomorrow for more baseball.
And remember, kids, baseball is more fun.
But man, it's more fun if you don't play in the NOS.
It really, really is.
