and my friend, it's Thunderstick, Jesse Friedman.
Happy Friday indeed, Derek.
How are you, sir?
I'm doing great.
I'm doing great.
We have baseball every day, baseball games that matters.
We're getting down to the World Series,
but it's looking a little bit like these Houston Astros
that we're on again, off again, on again about
might be making their way in,
possibly sealing the deal today.
We'll see.
We'll see.
Yeah, I mean, I guess by the time people listen to this, we may know for sure.
But yeah, I mean, this Houston Astros team has been an absolute load throughout the playoffs.
And I don't think anyone's going to be super surprised if, you know, if they wind up being the team in the World Series.
I personally had the raise.
I've said this earlier.
And I also had the Brewers coming out of the National League.
So my predictions were dead and gone.
on long ago, Derek.
I've, I've given up on,
on really predicting anything at this point because my real
was so far off.
But I know that I wasn't the only one because the Brewers were kind of
trendy.
You know, their pitching staff was,
was pretty likable.
The offense was maybe a little sketchy there.
But, you know, our man,
Eduardo Escobar is over with the Brewers,
which, you know, maybe gave me some hope.
But obviously, you know, we're sitting here where we are.
And it's, you know, it's going to be either the Astros of the Red Sox coming
out of the American League.
and this Dodgers Braves thing continues to be crazy with the Dodgers just torching the Braves last night, 11 to 2.
These games suddenly are no longer close.
It's just it's completely one-sided.
At least it has been like last couple times out.
So we'll see.
It's crazy, right?
And, you know, especially in that game, we thought we, we thought it had a bit, they had a big lead.
I think when they were up six to do, seven to two.
And they did not take their foot off the pedal.
It was two nothing brave.
It was 2-0 Braves in the first inning.
We were all like, all right, this might be it.
Let's see.
Maybe they can pull this off.
Eddie, Eddie Rosario got me my two hits.
That was important.
There you go.
The Dodgers.
That was the only good thing to happen for the brief.
That's the only good thing.
Yeah, exactly.
The Dodgers definitely, I, I don't know.
I see this criticism sometimes of playoff teams blowing another playoff team out.
And it's ridiculous to me.
It's the playoffs.
At this point, you want to get your guys.
in whatever groove you can.
Yes,
momentum does not carry over
from one game to another,
but you can definitely get in a groove
at the right time and stay there for a while.
You want to use every opportunity you can
to just stay focused and stay dialed in at the plate.
I think it's a great move to keep piling on the runs
in some of these games,
and I do not feel bad for whatever team is losing.
I think we talked about it with the rest of,
socks, you know, and what the Astros have been able to do.
That ninth inning that they almost got out of, you know, might have started something
disastrous as far as getting, you know, just those wheels turning for the Astros offense.
On the Dodgers side, I have to make a quick comment here.
I think we can stop Dodgers fans with the whole AJ Pollock can't hit in the postseason thing
because he hit two home runs in the previous game of this series.
And Derek now for the entire postseason, he is hitting 353 with an OPS over 1100.
So I think we could put that to bed for the moment, right?
And I feel like that's like isn't this kind of always the situation when it comes to guys
who have poor postseason numbers?
Like almost every time we say, you know, so and so chokes in the playoffs.
I feel like at least for me, Derek, as a numbers guy, I feel like playoff postseason samples are
just so small that you really can't make any kind of.
declaration like that over a player. Like even the very best players go through stages of 40 or 50
at bats where they're just not themselves. And, you know, if that happens in the postseason,
you know, that's, that's especially unfortunate. Obviously, the level of competition is a little
bit higher. So, you know, maybe there are some, some reasons for that connected to the postseason.
But a lot of times, I think it's just that guys go through, you know, a rough patch at a not ideal time,
right? Like Moogie Bet still has an OPS around 600 in the series. And,
And I don't think Dodgers fans are clamoring about how Mooky Betts can't hit in the playoffs, right?
Like in the end, I think these guys just kind of are who they are.
And the Dodgers have a lot of very good hitters.
And my goodness, we saw that on display last night.
I think you make a great point.
But I think what people see sometimes is players step up in the playoffs and become this other thing, right?
There is some clutch factor.
I will totally acknowledge.
There absolutely is.
as much as there is probably numbers that contradict me saying this,
this is just my opinion.
But when Paul Goldschmidt was here,
I always felt Paul Goldschmidt lacked a clutch factor.
The only reason why is because-
I don't think you're the only one.
I think a lot of diamondbacks fans do that way.
Okay.
And like I don't know sometimes if I'm just fabricating it or not.
A lot of times you base it on your experience and how much you saw.
So if you have, again,
a limited sample size,
like seeing a player, you know, like sometimes a national audience only sees a certain player in the playoffs because that's only when they're paying attention to baseball and that's when it's on that stage that's big enough for people to pay attention, right?
I'd feel a little guilty of that, but I always saw Paul Goldschmidt have monster games on nights where the offense didn't necessarily need it.
You know, the things were loose, the debacks were already up.
maybe in some cases, you know, he contributed to them being up.
It just seemed like when you put him in the opposite situation,
when the game was on the line, when it was the bottom of the ninth,
he was at the plate,
I don't remember a lot of big Paul Goldschmidt moments
as far as him coming through in the clutch, right?
Again, it might be the sample size.
It might just be my own personal perspective of the games I saw
and those moments that I tried to pay attention to.
I just remember after a while paying very strong attention to that.
And even kind of making a little joke of it in the press box,
like every time he'd strike out in those big moments just being like,
yeah, there you are again.
I knew it.
And again, nothing against the guy.
He was an amazing hitter and one of the best players that Diamondbacks ever had,
just an amazing draft pick when you think about how low in the draft he was
and everything that he,
everything he contributed to this team,
even how team friendly his contract was for a long period of time.
So I hold nothing bad against Paul Goldschman.
I just think that he definitely lacked for him being this bit larger than life legend
here in Arizona.
I felt like he always lacked that, that clutch factor.
I think that's sometimes what makes players into those legends quickly.
You know, big moments, big spots that they came up big.
I know Goldschmidt situation is different.
That was more just consistent numbers and being good throughout the year.
I do think, though, that there is something to be said about, you know,
those few players that are able to seize the moment in the playoffs and step up, right?
Altuve is somebody we've talked about doing that.
The Astros as a team seem to be able to step up in the playoffs
with how this being their fifth consecutive CS that they've,
you know, participated in, right?
That's, that's not easy in this sport.
It's not easy to stay that good for that long, that consistently, you know,
to make the playoffs alone for five years straight is an impressive feat in,
in baseball, you know.
Usually that's about the lifespan of your team, you know, five years is probably
the most that you can expect a team to be good enough to make the playoffs for
before you start to see them, you know, have a little, you know, resists.
you know, going back, you know, recession, going back down a little bit.
I just think that, you know, right now what we're seeing is,
I feel like we're still seeing the Dodgers and Astros on this course for the World Series, right?
Yeah.
Like deep down in my heart, as much as I don't want it to happen, as much as I want to root for the Braves,
as much as the Braves have a have a two-game lead still technically, right?
Because the Braves, I know that just one.
Technically they do.
But they have that, you know, they have that lead right now.
So I just, it still, regardless of what's set up right now, it feels like we're on a collision course for those two teams to meet up.
And, you know, those are as much as we hate both of them for their own reasons, you know, for baseball fans to hate both of those teams.
it's it really comes down to them being the two best teams right now of our current generation
the Astros and the Dodgers.
Unfortunately, you're right.
I mean, those, I mean, the Astros, like you said, I mean, have just been insane for a long time.
And, you know, the Dodgers blew your, you know, five year expectation of a playoff run out of the water.
I mean, they've been to the playoffs for nine straight seasons now, if I'm not mistaken.
So, but I do want to say that I don't think that, I mean, I guess I'm not, I'm not exactly shocking
anyone when I say this, but that doesn't sound like a very compelling world series to me,
Derek.
If this is what it comes down to, if it ultimately comes down to Dodgers Astros, when we've seen it
before, it is intriguing because of obviously the history between these two teams and the,
and the cheating scandal and all of those things.
So, you know, it's, I guess there's some intrigue there, but I don't think that would be
the type of world series that is really going to.
capture, you know, a significant audience from, from fans outside of L.A. and Houston, right?
There are other matchups that might be more compelling. I don't know if the Braves necessarily making
it is going to capture this huge audience either just with the Braves being a smaller market team.
But I do want to take a moment and just appreciate that, you know, the Braves, even as they're here
in an interesting spot, you know, they're up three games to two in the series. Really, anything can
happen right now. The Braves lost their best player.
like three months ago.
And we're sitting here talking about them even having a chance to play in the
one game.
One game away.
They are one game away.
And whether they do this or they don't, like the Atlanta Braves are, I mean, what a story.
What a story this is of a team that lost an incredible player several months ago.
I think in the NL East, you naturally don't get a whole lot of respect for your record
because the NL East just isn't as good as the other two divisions in the National League,
especially the NL West.
And so, you know, Braves win 88 games.
It's like, all right, they probably don't really deserve to be where they are.
But they've really fought to get to this point.
I mean, to overcome the adversity of losing Ronald Lacunae and still be here,
I am a huge Braves fan right now.
And I know we've talked about that over the last couple weeks.
And one more, Derek, one more.
They are so close right now.
I think the wrestling dynamic here is that they,
and I'm going to make you a wrestling fan slowly over time, Jesse.
But they call the good guys baby faces and the bad guy heels, right?
And the dynamic in any match when they're trying to book it is to have,
obviously, a good guy versus a bad guy, no matter what way they can make it.
They want a baby face versus a heel.
This, that World Series is, is, is, is,
a heel versus a heel. It's a bad guy versus a bad guy. Right. What we, what we need is we need the
Braves in there, right? We need the Braves because the Braves kind of are the last good guy team
left in this in this playoffs that can't be. I don't hate the Red Sox. People, my point is,
people can find the faults in the Red Sox. The Red Sox have been accused of their own cheating
scandal that was completely overshadowed by what the Astros did.
And, you know, it just, to me, feels like the Braves are our last hope to at least have somebody that everybody that isn't an Astros fan can get behind, you know.
When it's the Dodgers versus the Astros, it's hard to get behind the Dodgers if you hate the Astros.
And it's hard to get behind the Astros if you ate the Dodgers.
That makes the World Series just a little indifferent to you.
You know, that makes you not care, which is probably MLB's worst case scenario, frankly, you know.
I don't know if they can push the narrative of these two teams being hated rivals
and the Astros having supposedly stole a World Series away from the Dodgers.
I don't know if they can push that story hard enough to make people care about those two teams facing off in the World Series.
You know, but I know.
No, go ahead, sir.
Please.
I just, I just want to point out the pitching matchup because I think it's important for game six here.
Dodgers and Braves.
We've got Max Scherzer going for the Dodgers.
And this time, Derek, he's on regular rest,
which hasn't been able to say for a while.
And then on the Brave side, we have Ian Anderson,
who I believe is also pitching on regular rest here.
And he's a good pitcher.
I mean, not a household name, not like Max Scherzer.
But he's been very good this season.
Yeah, yeah.
And this is the other thing I want to point out real quick
is just that, I mean, both of these teams have had bullpen games
in these last couple games of the series.
The Dodgers had a bullpen game, this most recent game,
and the Braves had a bullpen game right before that.
And that is pretty crazy in the MLB postseason that like,
like, could you imagine Derek a decade ago,
teams using like an opener?
Like that was not,
that was completely unheard of.
So we're getting back to more of a traditional setup here for game six
with Scher going against Ian Anderson.
Well, and if the series took long enough,
it was,
You know, both of these teams got off track as far as their starting rotation is concerned.
But, you know, if it went long enough, they were going to both have an opportunity to kind of get things right.
And that's what I want.
You know, I don't, I don't want any of these teams at this point to be so gassed as far as what, you know,
someone like Dave Roberts had to do to get here to not really be seeing the best out of their team,
even if it means that the Dodgers are at 100 percent, right?
I know they're not going to be.
I know the Braves aren't going to be.
All of these teams have lost key players that helped get them there.
So it's, you know, at this point, it is a matter of, you know, it's a war of attrition and seeing how long you can last and all the other cliches.
Marathon, blah, blah, blah, right?
It's, it is true, though.
It's all a factor, especially when you get to the postseason, that, you know, it's kind of who can last longest and who can have the most able-bodied.
athletes, you know, still standing at the end, right?
Yeah, no, you're absolutely right.
It is a dog fight, and we're getting to the end here.
We're getting close.

Talking about whether or not we've seen the last of David Peralta, again,
like we clarified last night.
This isn't the last of him as a human being,
just the last of him as an Arizona Diamondback.
You can watch that over there.
Well, I'm got to clarify, Jesse.
You're the reason we had to clarify that.
We got talking mafia families and people getting whacked and stuff.

Jesse, writing beautiful articles.
I had something out there, some words, some blah, blah, blah.
Alec Thomas is an incredible, uh, individual, by the way.
And I really look forward to seeing him next season.
I did have a piece on the website about putting some respect on his name.
But Jesse, let's talk real quick.
about some memorable D-BACs playoff moments.
You got to say real quick, Derek.
You trying to apply there aren't that many?
You said it and I responded with there were.
I don't know.
You said we should talk about the non-2001 related.
Since 2001.
Since 2001.
Because everyone, everyone, I mean, we've, everyone's heard about the 2001 World Series.
You know, listening to this podcast.
It's so weird because there was a period of time probably in the mid-2000s when I kind of had this attitude.
Late 2000, like close to 2009, 2010, after we had been to the playoffs again, where I was like,
I am done hearing about this World Series team.
Let's move on.
Let's get another one.
Let's focus on the next thing that we're doing.
I just realized sometimes, though, how special that year was.
And now that we are 20 years away from that.
it kind of makes sense why people couldn't stop talking about it, right?
When you look at the history of this team in the playoffs,
there are not a lot of memorable playoff moments for us to sit here and wax about, right?
I mean, one of the first things I thought of was how excited we were in 2007 after we swept the Cubs.
I felt like that was an exciting moment.
It felt like the team was strong.
It felt like we were rejuvenated and were, you know,
after several years of being really, really bad
throughout the mid-2000.
It felt good again.
And man, we were just smacked right back down to earth
by the Colorado Rockies in the following series.
We did go on to their, was that their first world series?
I think so.
I think if you're talking about the Rockies
and making, like, trying to make guesses
about what they've done in the playoffs,
air on the side of they haven't done much.
Gotcha.
Because the Rockies have never won the division, Derek.
I don't know if you know this.
I don't know if our listeners know this.
The Rockies have not once won the NL West Division,
and they've been around longer than the Diamondbacks have.
So they're, I mean, if our friends over at DNVR Rockies were tried to record,
try to recording, if they tried to record the podcast that we are right now
talking about memorable playoff moments, they'd probably have even fewer than we have.
It'd be even shorter, right?
Yeah.
It'd be even shorter, yeah.
But there was a short of run.
Troy to the Whiskey memories.
Yeah, yeah.
And I mean, it's pretty much that 07 run.
I mean, there wasn't really anything else to it for them.
But that series with the Cubs was pretty fun.
I mean, you talk about the Diamondbacks didn't use that many pitchers in that series.
It was only a three-game series because they swept the Cubs.
But they got really pretty solid outings from their starting pitchers.
Of course, Brandon Webb was their starter in game one.
And he was a stud per usual.
He went seven innings, allowed just one run with nine strives.
rickouts. And the Diamondbacks pitching staff as a whole was really pretty incredible in this
game. I mean, they only allowed six earned runs total over the course of the three games.
And do you remember the, do you remember the D-backs closer in 2007, Derek? You remember,
you remember Papa Grande? Oh, my God, Papa Grande? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, Jose Valverde.
Jose Valverde threw the last pitch of that series that sealed the deal. It was at Wrigley Field.
One of one of two pitches he could throw.
Yeah, yep.
And Jose Valverde got to fly out from someone to right field.
And the man catching it was none other.
And this is a question I won't ask you because there's no way you would ever guess.
And there's no way I would ever guess if you would ask me.
Jeff Salazar caught the last out of that series.
Yeah, everyone's probably like, who the heck is Jeff Salazar?
He was a right fielder that the diamondbacks had for.
maybe a year. He was not on the roster for very long, but he was in the game. He was,
he entered the game as a replacement off the bench and he's the one who caught the final out of that
series. But those are the anybody anytime days, Derek. That's when that saying was,
was really making waves around the valley. And, you know, it was true. It was very true. I mean,
they did not have like one central superstar. It was Eric Burns and it was Orlando Hudson
and it was this team of a bunch of like pretty good players,
but somehow you put them together and you got a team that won 90 games
and made it to the NLCS.
Tatman.
Yeah, that was a good.
Yeah, that was a good year.
Was that man 07?
Tapman might not have been until 2011.
I think it was 11.
Yeah, he was 11.
Yeah, he was 11.
Both those teams had similar like mantras,
didn't they about the anytime anyone kind of stuff?
Well, they were both kind of misfit, like, how are you here sort of teams.
Yeah.
Right.
Yeah.
The 2017, even worse.
Yeah.
Well, I was.
That one, at least, that was some memorable moments in that game.
That game was one I could never forget.
But obviously, that was because I attended it.
That was the game where Schaffin poured beer on my head, like all super on purpose.
Oh, okay.
So the 2011 one means a lot to you then.
No, no, no, I'm talking about 2017.
Not 2011, 2011, 2007.
Oh, 2017.
Yeah, the wild card.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Chafin was not, he would not have been there in 2000.
No, yeah, 2017, the wild card was, uh, well, no.
Like, Archie's triple.
Like, that was like the loudest moment.
I ever remember being present for in that ballpark ever, you know?
Yeah.
And it was wild, too, because I wasn't in the press box at the time.
Uh, the press box was so full.
that I got bumped to an auxiliary press box,
which was located kind of over in the left field area behind the stands, right?
Like basically where they have the, you know, like the bark at the park at the park seats.
Those really aren't great seats.
No, it was not.
You're pretty far away from the action.
So I wasn't, that was like where I was keeping my stuff, but I wasn't like,
staying there. I stayed mobile, much like I did that day when you and I were together and I was
showing you all the places I take pictures from and whatnot, whatnot, you know, so I think that's,
and maybe that's part of it. Like the press box of Chase Field isn't, they don't keep the windows
closed. So it's not like other press boxes here in the valley that I've been to where it can
be quiet. But I just felt like maybe there was something about being out there in the outfield that
made it seem even louder than it would have been had I been sitting in the press box. You know what I
mean, I was out there in the crowd, you know, and that was, that was a great moment.
I've heard a lot of stories from people who've been at Chase Field or Bank One Ballpark
for like the most memorable moments of the franchise's history.
And a lot of people point to 2017 and that Archie Bradley Triple is like the loudest that they've ever heard the building.
The only thing that obviously might compare is the Gonzo single.
I mean, I would assume that that moment was probably as loud or maybe a little bit loud.
I mean, they won the whole thing at that point.
They won the whole goddamn world series.
Yeah.
Yes.
Yeah.
But I do want to say real quick about the 07 team, Derek, what makes that team special
to me and why I call them like really the misfit of all misfits is they got outscored as a team that year.
I believe their run differential was right around minus 50.
So they got to the playoffs and won the division and won 90 games with their opponents scoring like
50 more runs against them than they scored.
So that team for me is just like this wild story of like they're kind of similar to
the Mariners of 2021 actually, this team that unfortunately didn't end the same way for the
Mariners.
They had the Astros in front of them is a pretty major roadblock in the ALS.
But teams that their run differential says they're not a very good team and you look at
the roster and you kind of think they're probably not a very good team.
But they just have like this it factor where somehow they're,
They're winning all these games.
They shouldn't be winning.
They have all these clutch moments that you just can't really explain.
And that was a really, really fun season of Diamondbacks baseball.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
Well, Jesse, it's not baseball season.
It's almost over, right?
It's not baseball season anymore.

you will get the $500 or excuse me, $200 in free bets,
as long as you bet $5 on any team to win and that team wins, right?
Simple, easy.
Cardinals are playing this.
Texans. I don't need to tell you anymore.
I think you get what's going on there.
17 point favorites.
17 point favorites. That's right.
So of course that means with the Cardinals being undefeated and all of our hopes up,
something terrible is going to happen and they're going to lose.
Oh, God.
This is just, see, this is what this is a covering sports fan in our names.
This is what covering the Diamondbacks will do to you.
Real quick, Jesse, you and I yesterday, we,
decided to select mafia families. Oh man, I haven't looked at the poll. I'm scared. I think,
I think you should be. I think you should be. I should be. Right. We went to the people.
We wanted to know which family you were joining. Are you joining the freedmans or the Montillas
with your leaders? I'm not going to say Josh Rojas is. I'm not taking your order. Obviously,
here the boss of the freedmen's is Mike Faron. That's obviously what's going on here. He really was my first
overall pick. I know that. And then Dave McKay. Dave McKay is like the like I envision him on your squad being like,
uh, the mentor to Mike Farron, right? You know, it's like in it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's like,
uh, young Tony Soprano being taken under the wing by, uh, some of his elders in the family,
as well as, of course, Josh Rojas, who's just Jesse's ice cold murderer in the alley that you don't want to
Me, mine being Caleb Smith.
I'd love to see Josh Rojas and Caleb Smith in a knife fight.
I got Salvatore Lavallo leading my squad with his number two, Madison Bumgarner,
just cracking knuckles, you know, behind Sal while he's talking the whole time.
According to the people, Jesse, by a whopping 52% to 48%.
Oh, my gosh.
More people want to join the Montias.
That's the way this stacked up.
46 bullets, 52% of the vote.
We each shared it.
You have more Twitter followers than me, Derek.
I blame that.
I'm going to say that your Twitter follows like you more.
I think that's been proven.
That's fair.
All right.
Now I'm okay with it.
There's a higher percentage of people to follow you that like you than me.
I've come to terms with that and I'm fine with it.
But again, at the end of the day, there's a winner and there's a loser.
And I think we determined which one you are and which one I am.
in this scenario.
I will see you on the
on the battlefield when our two gangs
fight each other inevitably
sometime soon. You guys
can find out what the results of that
is by following us on Twitter.
I'm at cap underscore caveman
with a K. Jesse is at Jesse N.
Friedman. Our podcast is at
PHNX underscore D-BACs
but of course all roads lead to
at PHNX underscore
sports and that is on Twitter.
Giveaway season there. You got to make sure we tell
the people that it's giveaway season on
PHNX debacks right now.
That's absolutely right.
Because we love you guys so much for the love you
have shown us, we are giving away
a free PHNX sports
t-shirt of your choosing
to anybody that
follows our account at PHNX
underscore debacks,
likes or comments on our
post about the giveaway and
retweets it. That's it. It's that simple.
I'll tell you what. I'm even going to make it easier
for you if you quote tweet it,
I'll just count that as both things.
So if you quote, tweet it with a comment, there, you're done.
I appreciate you guys doing it.
And it's the least that Jesse and I can do to give back to you guys.
We look forward to doing more stuff like this.
I have a, my wife was like, are you going to give away your gonzo?
Because I have a gonzo from the muffins.
You remember that giveaway at Chase Field.
They gave away little stuffed animal gonzoes dressed in the gonzo.
Wow.
My wife was like, are you going to give it away?
I said, I will die.
before I give away.
My little baby gonzo.
Understand me when I say that.
We better get a lot of new followers if we if we give to that level.
She starts talking about my bobbleheads and stuff.
I have a bat autographed by Willie Bloomquist.
She wants me to give away.
I think my wife just wants me to clean out my office.
So she's like,
if you're going to start giving stuff away.
She has a hidden agenda for sure.
She really does.
Alterier motives are abound, Jesse.
But we appreciate you guys following us and checking out the show as always.
And again,
and it's the least we can do.

If you are an Arizona sports fan,
I think you'll be a fan of what we're doing over here.
Come join our family, sign up for a membership,
do all of that stuff.
Because, you know, we exist because you guys.
want us to exist. We're trying to bring you different content and we're trying to be here for you all
the time. We know of all the markets that Arizona is probably the one that gets the least love
when it comes to regular content covering your teams. And that's what we want to be for you guys.
Thank you so much again for joining us on behalf of Jesse and myself. We can't thank you enough for
being a part of this with us. And remember kids, baseball is fun, but it's so much more fun when you bet on it.
