Starting point is 00:00:00 The Arizona Diamondbacks are actually in on Alex Breggman? Apparently so, according to reports. We're going to talk about all of the rumors and how the Diamondbacks could actually afford it. We feel like it involves a Cotel Marte trade. We're talking about this in 30 seconds with our guy, Jesse Friedman. Don't you go anywhere. Ski-Y and welcome in to another edition of the PHNX Keybacks podcast. Live from my house,
Starting point is 00:00:37 It is your mayor of PHAX, occasionally known as Derek Montia. Thrilled to have you guys here and thrilled to be talking about some more crazy rumors. Of course, got our guy, Jesse Friedman from Snake's territory joining us today. Got our guy Noah on the ones and twos.
Starting point is 00:00:59 And this show, of course, is brought to you by our friends at Game Time. To go download that GameTime app right now, create an account and use our code of PHNX for 20. off your first purchase, terms do apply. And maybe, just maybe you want to wait on that to get yourself some tickets to watch the Arizona Diamondbacks play baseball if they make yet again one of the biggest
Starting point is 00:01:20 free agent moves of the off season. Let's go three for three in three consecutive years. Here to talk about it is our guy, the Thunderstick himself, the one and only, Jesse Friedman. Jesse, crazy stuff. Didn't want to believe it. couldn't believe it still don't really believe it but after i mean according to multiple reports that we have here apparently the diamondbacks are the mystery team that are in all in on free agent
Starting point is 00:01:53 third baseman um don't really know how uh and again don't really know how to process it we feel i feel like we've been through this in the past though uh over the last few off seasons where the Diamondbacks added a player to their team that we were shocked to find out that they were in on. And suddenly they land one of the biggest free agents of the offseason. This is kind of what it's looked like when the devaks do actually land a big name free agent, which granted doesn't happen a whole whole lot in this organization. But generally, this is the model. Like there's not much chatter.
Starting point is 00:02:34 The expectations are fairly low. And then all of a sudden, the debacks sign a Zach Ranky, or they sign a Jordan Montgomery, or they sign a Corbyn Burns, just sort of out of nowhere without much reporting leading up to that. And I guess, I mean, there was definitely a lot of reporting that happened today. I mean, I saw a number of different reporters going out there and saying something along these lines,
Starting point is 00:02:59 that the debacks are interested in Alex Bregman. So there's already more smoke here than there's probably been on a lot of the other moves that I referenced. But yeah, it's interesting and very, very unexpected for sure. Well, in our guys from Yahoo Sports, the Cessbitist family barbecue boys, they made a great point. Like Mike Hazen plays his cards close to his vest. We've talked about that so often on this show.
Starting point is 00:03:25 You know, so typically you don't hear about this move. as you're alluding to until the move is done, until the deal is done. And we might not be there yet. And I still don't know how the hell we can get there, Jesse. But like you said, we have multiple reports. We have tweets here from Bob Nightingale. Bob Nightingale tweeted this out today. He said the Arizona Diamondbacks, or this was yesterday, excuse me,
Starting point is 00:03:48 the Arizona Diamondbacks have become a surprise entrant in the Alex Brigman sweepstakes and are kicking the tires on the possibility. The debacks would certainly have the financial flexibility if they move second baseman in Cotel Marte and could move third baseman Jordan Lawler to second base. That part, obviously interesting, something we've talked about, that the Diamondbacks would not have a huge problem finding a replacement for Cotel Marte over there at second, right here within the organization. Not to say that that option would be as good as Cotel,
Starting point is 00:04:20 but when you talk about a player of Alex Bregman's caliber, you have to be interested in the idea here that the Diamondbacks could get at Bregman and also this hall that some are saying that they could get from the Boston Red Sox. And Bob Nightingale isn't the only one reporting that, Jesse. We have John Heyman here backing up Bob Nightingale's reporting. John Heyman tweeted out yesterday, the Diamondbacks have interest in Alex Brighman. It'll be interesting to see how this could affect the Tell Marte trade talks, especially with Red Sox. Bob Nightingale first mentioned Brigman AZ Link.
Starting point is 00:04:53 We also had our guy Jared Corobus, who went on MLB. or went on the MLB network today and discussed this and then did reveal that he said go read the tea leaves on my Twitter page and then just said yes it was the debacks so he Jared Krovis is saying someone very close to the Boston Red Sox that the diamondbacks are in fact very very in on Breggman and all of this is incredible Jesse because obviously we know Alex Breggman's pedigree. We know how instrumental he has been to the success of the Astros and the World Series Championships that they won and just overall has been one of the best third baseman in the
Starting point is 00:05:40 league. We've talked about so many deals, so many packages, so many teams interested in Catell and none of it has made any sense until you start hearing this series of moves that would result in Alex Breggman essentially being picked up by the Diamondbacks on what sounds like is a longer term deal than other teams are offering. Maybe not more money on an annual value salary basis, but overall, it sounds like the Diamondbacks could be getting ready to pay Alex Breggman a lot of money for a long time if this is the case with this deal. I think we've known for a while that if you trade Catelle Marte, you know, yes, your pitching staff could maybe take
Starting point is 00:06:27 a big step forward from what you could get back. And I think that would pretty clearly be the primary reason to do a trade like that. D-BACs pitching staff certainly needs help even still. But at the same time, you know, I think there's been a sense that your offense is going to take a step back. I mean, sure the debacks have internal options in the infield, as you said, but there is a pretty big gap between Cotel Marte and, you know, whatever you think Jordan Lawler is going to be capable of in 2026, or even someone who's a little more established like Blaze Alexander. I'm not sure he's, he's necessarily proven himself as an everyday player in the big leagues at this point, especially, I don't know if second base ever makes sense for, for Blaze Alexander, given that he has a cannon of an arm
Starting point is 00:07:17 and it just feels like it's kind of wasted if you have them on the right side of the infield. So yeah, I honestly hadn't really considered this possibility somehow. I guess I should have where the diamondbacks go through and they do trade Ketel, but then they sort of try to backfill in kind of a more significant way where they go out and get someone like an Alex Bregman. I guess the underlying assumption all along has just been that, you know, sure, it'd be great if the debats get Alex Breckman, but they're not going to spend that kind of money this offseason. Yeah. And I still am not sure that they're going to, but it at least sounds like it's something that they're willing
Starting point is 00:07:58 to consider. There's mutual interest according to a report. He trains here in Scottsdale, Arizona, more than trains, has like a training team and a facility, likes it here like many players do, you know, and wants to spend more time in Arizona. It's one of our biggest recruiting tactics for this team, Jesse. I make a joke about that. And you know, based on our time together, that I've made plenty of jokes about that in the past. But it's not really a joke. It's a wonderful place to live. We love Arizona. And also for a baseball player, it's just so convenient to not have to be away from your family and away from your home
Starting point is 00:08:40 for any significant period of time other than for a road trip. You're just here all year. And in some cases players choose to make their homes here, even when they play for another team. Even when they play in Chicago and play here or play in Florida or play wherever, right? So Alex Brighman very much likes Arizona. That's at least what we're being told. And we like Alex Brighman. I mean, let's take a look here at his 20, 25 stats. As you can see, no rust here on this guy.
Starting point is 00:09:08 Average 273. I mean, this was kind of a down season there for him a little bit with the Red Sox, 18 home run, 62 RBI. still an 821 OPS, still a 3.5 baseball war. And I mean, this is just last season. But overall, I mean, he's had some notable seasons in the past. He hit 31 home runs in 2018 with 103 RBI. In 2019, he had the best offensive season of his career.
Starting point is 00:09:34 He hit nearly 300, hitting 296 with 41 home runs in 112 RBI. 201, he did hit 300. He hit 307 with 31 RBI. He was the American League Championship Series MVP back in 2019. He has multiple Silver Slugger Awards and multiple All-Star appearances. He is definitely on the back end of his career. I mean, he's not young. He's not exactly what the Diamondback said that they were going out to get.
Starting point is 00:10:06 But there is a maneuver that we're going to talk about here involving a Cattel Marte trade that would definitely feel like the kind of move that makes you feel a lot better about trading Cattel and you feel like this team did just not make baby steps forward advancing towards being a contender, but made some serious leaps and bounds forward and have controllable young talent that could be the future of our starting rotation. Right. But back to Brickman. The bigger question here is we know what you're getting out of him, right? you're getting a great balance at the plate of power and contact.
Starting point is 00:10:45 He's known for a high OPS. He has that clutch factor with what we've seen time and time again in the past. Plus he's versatile. Third baseman can also, you know, play shortstop as well. That's right, throws right. And just overall, a guy that would be an absolute clubhouse leader, not just a veteran that's there offering his experience. It's no offense to James McCann, but like the Diamondbacks having someone like McCann, right?
Starting point is 00:11:14 This is a guy that would go out and lead on the field, would lead, by example, would lead in the clubhouse, would just embody the championship competitive culture that the Astros put out there for years and would bring that to the Diamondbacks and hopefully have it spread throughout, you know, the clubhouse. And like, again, aside from age being a factor and a long-term deal being concerned, I don't see a reason why, you know, I don't see how there is a potential there for Bregman to at least provide us with that all-star caliber player that in the infield that would replace Catele-Marté. He's been really consistent. I mean, this past year, you showed the numbers. I mean, an 821 OPS pretty, pretty close to his career norms.
Starting point is 00:12:05 I know Alex Bregman did have a couple of insane seasons. but way back in 2018 and 2019, where he was arguably the best player in baseball, certainly one of the best players in baseball at that point. He's not that guy anymore. I don't know if he's going to finish top three or top five for you and MVP voting, but he's still a very good player, just year in and year out. He missed about a month and a half this year with a quad injury, and he still went out there and put up three and a half war,
Starting point is 00:12:36 which is a pretty big number. And he just kind of does that every year. It was 4.1 last year on baseball reference. It was 4.9 the year before that, 4.5 the year before that. You know, these are not MVP caliber numbers, but they're really solid. I mean, a four-war player is basically a borderline all-star. And with Bregman, you feel really confident that he's just going to be able to deliver that for you year in and year out.
Starting point is 00:13:05 So, you know, regardless of the price. tag, which I imagine we'll get to here in a second. He's a really good player and he fits the diamond backs very well, whether they have Catelle Marte or they don't. This team still has some fairly big questions at third base in the long run and bringing in Alex Breggman to be an anchor over there at that position. I mean, that would be a huge benefit to this team. How do we afford Alex Bregman, Jesse? No, seriously. How do we afford Alex? How are we even in talks here? What even is this? I don't even understand. Like, I understand this, once again, from the perspective that a long-term contract here for Alex Bregman could be structured in so many
Starting point is 00:13:56 different ways. And perhaps, perhaps he even gives the Diamondbacks a little bit of a discount. but I imagine it's not going to be much off of the projected amount of somewhere in the neighborhood of what, $155 to $170 million over six years, seven years. He's old. I'm old. I shouldn't be casting shade at him. He's not that old. He's not Derek Montia old, but he's still one of those guys that do you really want to stretch that contract out that far? Perhaps deferrals are involved.
Starting point is 00:14:31 perhaps other things allow the diamond backs a bit more flexible financial or excuse me financial flexibility here i mean i do feel like if bregman is coming here he doesn't just want to come here and ride off into the sunset because of how great siddona is for its healing powers i think jesse he wants to come here and win and again a big part of that would have to be him somehow helping the team out in a way to figure this out financially if the diamond backs do trade kutel which we're going to talk about all those scenarios here in a little bit but if they do trade could tell kattel's contract is coming off of their you know payroll so there is that right that could definitely help with a bregman deal but 150 million dollars to 170 million dollars jessie i mean uncle ken has been so kind i think i'm starting to think we're asking too much of this man
Starting point is 00:15:25 Yeah, it's a, it's a reasonable, a reasonable thought for sure. I really have no idea where, where Ken Kendrick stands on this. And what we, what we heard from from Nick Picoro last night in his story was that this is probably unlikely for the Diamondbacks, according to, to one of his, one of Nick sources, but they said the way that it happens is if Ken Kendrick decides that there's more spending power than what the team originally had in mind. It would have to be in that kind of special circumstance that we've seen Ken operate in at times. And who knows? I mean, Alex Bregman is also a Scott Boris client. We know what happened when Scott Boris called Ken Kendrick last year about Corbyn Burns and that obviously did turn into something. Maybe Scott
Starting point is 00:16:21 Boris has has a way of convincing Ken Kendrick to spend in a way that maybe other agents are not as successful at doing. But yeah, I mean, it's going to be significant. The estimates are anywhere from about five years to maybe somehow it gets up to seven, I think most likely five or six years and you're probably looking at about 28 to you know 32 34 million per year something like that which is which is a lot of money i mean it's it's a lot of money for anyone and it is a lot of money for someone like alex bregman who again is a very good player but is not at least on paper he's not your prototypical middle of the lineup run producer you know 40 homers he's he's not that guy he's very valuable. He does. He's a good defender at third base. He won a gold glove in
Starting point is 00:17:15 24, and he's an above, a well above average hitter, but it's, you know, it's not elite, elite, level stuff. He's, he's kind of a tier below that. Well, and we know that the Boston Red Sox are all in on trying to bring him back. It feels like they are far closer to striking a deal with Breggamint, and, you know, the Red Sox just have more money to spend overall. I talked about this on Monday's show because we got a question in the mailbag, Jesse, where someone was like, do you see us spending any money on a high dollar player? And I laughed the idea off. Like, no, not in a million years did I see the Diamondbacks being all in on any kind of high dollar player once again. I feel like they've kind of been burned in the past on the past two seasons. So it would
Starting point is 00:18:05 be a hard sell on Mr. Kendrick. And I also think that, you know, again, And they have needs that go far beyond one guy, you know, as he once said about Otani. He's just one player. He's not the second coming. Maybe he was. But maybe he was wrong about that. But he, again, they just have so many needs, right? Like if they're going to spend a lot of money, great.
Starting point is 00:18:29 But spread it around some and go out and address all of your needs. Get yourself with Pete Fairbanks. Get yourself maybe even one of these more elite guys that, unfortunately, are no longer on the market. like go go spend your money in that kind of way and spread it around i will also say though that high song kim just got paid what 20 million dollars for one season by the braves so when you talk about outrageous not outrageous yeah so when you talk about bragman's value being 28 to 32 i'm like fine you could convince me on that easily if you're talking about him getting that much of money but um
Starting point is 00:19:00 yeah i just i think that uh it's it's just odd that it's come up it's odd that there's suddenly so much to this story and it just still feels so unlikely unless mike hazen as someone alluded to on twitter is in fact playing four d chess here with the boston red socks and we're going to talk about that on the other side of this break don't you guys go anywhere you're watching the p h and x diamondback show well got to see our guys from branded bills and i got to express to them how proud i am of that company for their growth branded bills has just become a staple in the hat community. And let me tell you, here I am, like many years later, I don't want to reveal once again how old I am,
Starting point is 00:21:02 but many years later, I'm sitting here and still very grateful for the fine folks at Desert Financial for getting me started on owning this beautiful place. Of course, you can look to Desert Financial for whatever financial goal you're trying to reach. You can all use a little extra money during this time of the year. All right, Jesse.
Starting point is 00:21:35 Well, we talked about it and we got to really get into it here because there's probably a lot of people that are listening saying, what are you guys talking about? He's a free agent. Why do we have to trade Catell? Why can we not just keep Catell and add Alex Bregment? Well, we definitely don't have the money for that. That's that's one thing. Like I said earlier, trading Cotel Marte would take his contract off the books. His contract is not substantial, but it's not nothing.
Starting point is 00:22:05 right so the diamondbacks would have more money to offer to someone like bregman but more importantly the boston red socks want alex bregman back probably more than they want to trade for catele marty maybe it's a push maybe it's maybe i don't know i don't know marty kidelmarty is an MVP caliber player as you said earlier you definitely can't say the same thing about Bregman any longer, right? He was at one point in his career, but now at this point, you're definitely not seeing him put up MVP caliber numbers. However, Citell is that, and he could be more. He could absolutely thrive and hit 50 home runs at Fenway, right? Like, there's so many things there that would be so alluring to Cotel Marte being in a Boston Red Sox
Starting point is 00:22:54 jersey. Plus, we saw his no trade clause the other day, Jesse. It had five, teams and the most significant team on there was the New York Yankees. So you know there's nothing that Boston Red Sox fans already love about Gatel more than he, the fact he hates the Yankees as much as they do, maybe even more. I don't know. But it's an interesting thing here. The Red Sox do have a tremendous interest in Bregman. That seems to be a priority for them, not to say they're not trying to also make that move
Starting point is 00:23:24 for Cotel. But if the Diamondbacks are somehow able to just come in here and swoop in and make a move for Bregman and take him off the market, the Red Sox would desperately be seeking a star of Cotel Marte's caliber. And Mike Hazen might have Craig Breslow right where he wants him at that point. That might be the point where these trades that have been out there that have been kind of infuriating Red Sox fans might come to fruition, where the Red Sox give up entirely too much for Cotel Marte. And they do it kind of out of desperate. in order to keep up with the other teams in the ALE,
Starting point is 00:24:02 specifically what the Orioles are building over there and trying to put together. So again, I mean, we, and this isn't my idea. I can't take credit for this. We have this tweet here from Bergeron, under Sean Bergeron here. He said the Diamondback signing Gregman to force the Red Sox hand into making a S word, Cotel Marte trade would be next level 4D chess.
Starting point is 00:24:26 Mike Hazen shoving Craig Breslo into a locker. Jesse, I don't know if all of this would come to fruition or if this would necessarily be the case, but you have to admit here that we definitely have a case where this is true. And if the negotiations and talks are happening, there's a good chance that, you know, the Diamondbacks are not only able to add a veteran in, you know, in Breggman, but also get some of the Red Sox not just pitching prospects, but someone like Peyton, Toll, who kind of took the world by storm a bit last year and making his debut at a major league level and could very well be the future of a team's starting rotation.
Starting point is 00:25:10 I do think the debaX could maybe, I mean, this is pure speculation, but maybe the devax could kind of drive up the market for Alex Breggman. I mean, certainly the, any time another interest or another team shows interest and is serious about it is willing to really talk numbers, then I imagine that could only make things more difficult for the Red Sox. The more I've thought about it, though, I think that while the debacks just going out and signing Alex Bregman today, you know, while we think like that pushes the Red Sox back against the wall, like maybe they really have to pony up and give the debacks what they want for Cotel Marte. I'm not sure it necessarily works that way because I think,
Starting point is 00:25:56 the debacks would lose some leverage if if everybody around the leak knows that the only way the debacks can get bregman is if they trade kattel then if they if they go out there and they get bregman first then everyone at that point's going to be like all right now they got to trade kettle so there isn't a reason for me to pony up and meet their offer like they're kind of back they're the ones backed against the wall at that point sure that's a great point well and i mean again um The trade packages out there have also been really lofty, you know, and that's the reason why I say that when it comes to Red Sox fans. I mean, they have a guy like Peyton Toll or Connolly Early as a part of it. They also have will you or bray you.
Starting point is 00:26:40 There's also some untouchables. They have so many assets. Yeah, they have so many assets. Right. And they're all exactly what the Diamondbacks are looking for and need. They're guys that would fit in with the core that they currently have. And that's kind of what they're trying to build around is even if 2026 isn't the season that they're going to contend, they want to add the future of this team to Perdomo and Corbin and the rest of the young core.
Starting point is 00:27:08 Maybe, you know, extend Gabriel Moreno. I still don't know if we even want to see that based on the performances that we've seen out of him. But, you know, again, just figure out who the core is. Plus, you can start building towards the future of this starting pitching rotation. You have some aging guys in there. You have guys that you know you're probably not going to bring back after their contracts are over almost indefinitely. And you kind of have a wild card there in Mike Soroka,
Starting point is 00:27:35 who still has plenty of years ahead of him, right? Like he's 28 years old. So he could definitely find his way back to being a good to even great pitcher in major league baseball based on what we've seen out of him at one time in his career. But gamble there. We don't know what we're going to get out of Soroka. We don't know what we're going to get out of this rotation. at all.
Starting point is 00:27:56 Trading Cotel for a young guy is great. But, you know, again, even some of the trade packages, even if the D-BACs were able to pull all of this off masterfully, it's still, you know, it's still going to make people question if we got enough for a Catell, even if it infuriates and drives the Red Sox fan base insane. Right. So, but I still just, I get relocating the money to Bregman. maybe you're right maybe the trade for kutel marty asked to happen out of necessity first before any
Starting point is 00:28:29 further moves are made and again we know a lot of these deals happen behind the scene so it's very plausible that they could kind of get a loose handshake agreement with brigman and then once they kind of have him on board they can figure out you know what they're what what deal they're going to take for kattel or whatever overall though this feels like um the kind the kind the kind of the kind of thing that could shift the franchise significantly. It also could be a complete disaster. You know what I mean? And also true. It's going to hurt so much more to see Cotel go be like, like almost like what Mookie Betts was moving from the Red Sox to the Dodgers and moving from us to the Red Sox. And I know that I know that the Red Sox have been looking for that guy, that replacement essentially
Starting point is 00:29:21 for Mooky Betts and Catel Mark. would absolutely be that. They've had some disasters with some of these things with what happened last year with Devers and other things, right? So, I mean, the Red Sox are in the most competitive division in baseball. They have to try to do what they can to keep up, you know, with those other teams. I don't know if they're going to be desperate enough to even consider anything like this. And in the end, I think that they would feel pretty, you know, like, It would be pretty bad because not only would they lose the players they traded to the Diamondbacks for Cotel, but they would also essentially lose Bregman to the Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:30:01 And it would almost feel overall like they also traded Bregman to the Diamondbacks. And if I was Craig Breslo, I would die before I let that happen. I would not in a million years have it look like at the end of the day, I also traded not only all these great young players, but Alex Bregman, too, to the D-Backs. I mean, I think from the D-BACs perspective, like if you trade Ketel but you sign Alex Gregman, I mean, I'm not going to say D-BACs fans are going to be universally happy about that. I mean, there are people out there who think Ketel-Marté is probably their favorite player and understandably so.
Starting point is 00:30:38 He's very, very good at baseball and has been around this organization for a very long time. And, I mean, it sucks as a fan of any team in sports when your team trades. away a guy who's still, I don't know if we would say in his prime with Catelle, but like not far off as prime, even though he's 32 years old. I mean, he's still putting out MVP caliber type numbers. But I mean, if you go, if you turn around, you sign Alex Bregman as a fan, you'd be like, all right, like, hey, you know, maybe this is just sort of what made sense. As long as the return for Cattel, it is strong, right? I mean, as long as as you can, you can land a young starting pitcher that maybe already has some experience in the majors
Starting point is 00:31:24 and has a lot of promise. You know, especially if you can also land a position player in that trade that has at least some value. That's where I think it could tell trade becomes a lot more possible is if the debacks can acquire a position player in there that is solid. You know, you mentioned Willier-A-U earlier or the Redstocks also have Jaron-Duran. If there's a way to somehow get one of those guys in addition to maybe that young starter, like a Connolly early or a Peyton Toley, I think that that just suddenly looks a whole lot better.
Starting point is 00:32:03 And if you're also signing Alex Breggman, then you could talk yourself into the DeBax lineup getting better, right? I mean, it's like, yes, you track Coutel Marte, but if you add Willier-Abreu and Alex Breggman, I think your offense is at least, it's probably better. I mean, it's probably better on paper than it would have been with Catea and that would make it a whole lot easier for the D-BACs to sell that move to the fan base. I'm going to take a step back because I did raise my hand there during what you were saying. And that's because, yes, I am a Catele-Marte fan. Cotel-Marte is my favorite player.
Starting point is 00:32:40 And it goes far beyond just how good he is on the field. Catel Monte is a joy to watch play the game because he has so much joy for the game. And he's just out there playing this game that so many people take so seriously and millions upon millions of dollars is made on. And Catel's just out there joking around with the opposing players, having a good time playing this game that he's played since he was a kid. and he just looks like that every time he goes out there. It's something I wish every player could do. And again, that's to me what one of the things that makes him, you know, enjoyable.
Starting point is 00:33:24 He just plays it like he plays it like nobody's watching. You know the phrase like dance like nobody's watching. Kattel-Marte plays baseball like nobody's watching. Like he just out there having a good time, you know? and he has been an incredible employee of the Diamondbacks. He has accepted a lot of things from this team, from moving to center field to very friendly team contracts over the years. And, you know, again, just expressing a love for being here,
Starting point is 00:34:01 a love for living in Arizona, a love for this team, wanting to play here and end his career here. He said that several times before. It's something players say. I mean, I'm not going to act like it's not lip service because it's something players say to pump the fan base up and everything like that. But, yeah, man, it's just something for me that I've always enjoyed
Starting point is 00:34:24 Cotel Marte. I don't love the idea of trading them away. I just, I do understand that at times someone like Mike Hazen has to make some drastic moves in order for us, to keep up with the competition in this division. Like what I was saying about the Red Sox. Like it's, it feels hopeless,
Starting point is 00:34:43 you know, and, you know, again, you have the other teams in the division kind of, I don't know, not really doing much. The Red Sox,
Starting point is 00:34:52 or excuse me, the Red Sox, the Dodgers, they obviously got better. They didn't even need to get better and they got better. The Padres might be a bit of a mess. The Giants, you know,
Starting point is 00:35:02 are going to try. They're not going to stop trying. They're just a bit limited. on their resources as well, right? And the Rockies, even though they're kind of the, the runt of the litter here, they have some excellent people in place over there, managing that team now.
Starting point is 00:35:19 And I'm not worried about them, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them turn things around. And that's just yet another team that we have to deal with here in this division. So I don't know. I mean, I can definitely understand or trade, especially something of this magnitude, right, where they're able to pull off this trade and also bring in someone like Bregman.
Starting point is 00:35:41 It's one of very few things I've heard that actually make a Cotel Marte trade appealing to me. And again, as I proclaimed earlier and probably shouldn't ever do as someone that's supposed to be unbiased journalist covering this team, I love Ctele Marte and I'm a huge fan of the guy. Yeah, I think that the, I mean, I guess the alternative that you can have and you can have in your your head. If you're a Debex fan and you really want to hold on to Catelle Marte, which is totally understandable. I mean, I imagine that's probably where most people land. You know, you don't, you don't have to do this thing with Bregman. I mean, what you could also do is keep Catele, Marte. And then instead of spending a bunch of money on Alex Bregman that you maybe weren't
Starting point is 00:36:24 expecting to spend, you could spend a bunch of money on like a Framber Valdez or, you know, you could go out there and be aggressive in a similar way, but maybe you invest in a pitcher instead. I guess the challenge, though, is you're not, you know, here that you're only adding about maybe $10, 15 million onto the books theoretically, you know, because you're a moving Cattel's salary and then adding Bregman's, whereas in that world, if you go sign a Framber Valdez, you're just straight up adding 30 million or whatever it is to your payroll. So, but I mean, it depends on how, you know, how willing is Ken Kendrick to to kind of up the spending. something I just read here, as we've been recording, Derek, is this from Ken Rosenthal story.
Starting point is 00:37:14 This is how his story starts. On Monday, a rival executive summed up the Arizona Diamondbacks offseason messaging thusly. Here's the quote. We have no money. We have no money. We have no money. Dot, dot, dot. Oh, Ken got aggressive.
Starting point is 00:37:31 End quote. that is how another executive is describing oh oh oh oh jesse i'm pumped out i am pumped now let's go ken shots on me ken let's go i'm like let's get somebody and then let's go to the bar i know it's not the winter meetings but we'll find a hotel bar to hang out at and shots on me because I know you're going to be broke after being aggressive once again. I honestly, can you imagine being Mike Hazen and trying to go to Ken Kendrick once again and be like, hey, so Scott called. See, but I think Scott just calls Ken.
Starting point is 00:38:18 Scott just, he just goes directly to this point, right? Probably. You're probably right there. But I just, could you imagine being Mike and trying to go to Ken Kendrick after the two objective failures that were the Jordan Montgomery signing and no offense to Corbin Burns because I really like him a lot. I'm not trying to say he's a failure, but it's hard to say it's the success considering the injury, right?
Starting point is 00:38:43 So it would just be like different reasons that both of those signings could be considered like failures for this team and not working out and then having to go to him again and try to convince him to once again spend more than he wanted to. like that that that feels like a thankless task that feels like like you know again just just the worst kind of having to go to your parents and ask them for money after you told them off and said you were going to live your life on your own or whatever but we're going to take a quick break on the other side of this break we're going to go to talk a little bit about some music because jesse's a big music guy we're going to talk about michael sarokas comments about music that jack
Starting point is 00:39:21 summers he knows how to ask some questions that are definitely off the path and i love it for him so Where it gets it out on the other side of this break, don't you go anywhere? Jesse, we got a chance to talk to Michael
Starting point is 00:41:44 Seroca yesterday. It was great. I really like him. I like his attitude. I like a lot of the stuff he talked about. More importantly, you know, he addressed, you know, some of the injury concerns. he was very understanding about teams having concerns with his past and with the unfortunate string of injuries that he's experienced over his career. It did sound like he's figured some things out to kind of help him stay healthy. And it did seem like that was a focus of his. But a focus of Jack Summers, your pal, your co-host over there at Snake's territory, was to ask him about his musical taste. That's because Michael or Mike, we still haven't figured that out. He was Mike before and he's Michael now, according to reports.
Starting point is 00:42:29 But Michael had a very lovely setup. We have been very, we have been very, we've criticized at times. Athletes setups when they join us via Zoom. We all were stranded in our homes during the pandemic. I thought we all figured out how to have a decent, you know, home background or at least a wall to be in front of. But that's not the case all the time. Michael set up very aesthetically pleasing.
Starting point is 00:42:52 We're talking about the GameTime app being aesthetically pleasing. his background right here right he had uh guitars on the wall he had all sorts of stuff uh and he had some great answers here about all of that behind him i think we have video here's what michael had to say about uh jack's question asking you about his musical tastes his musical interests yeah no i i um i guess uh really i mean my dad and mom played music a ton my mom dragged me to the symphony when i was a little kid and I wasn't that thrilled about it, but I can appreciate it now. And I think that's kind of something that always been a part of my life. And obviously my dad chose what we were listening to in the car. And it started with, you know, 90s, early 2000s country. And then I got into guitar hero. My sister
Starting point is 00:43:40 bought me guitar hero when I was probably about 10 years old and fell in love with that and fell in love with the music in that game. And that's when kind of started to get into the old classical rock. And and then a little more of the 80s, 90s, you know, mainstream rock alternative. And then kind of moved into naturally the next level, which was hard rock metal. I don't go too deep into the metal stuff. But again, playing the guitar is where that all took me. And obviously it was, you know, I see that this guitar right here was a gift from the All-Star game in Cleveland, which is the Rock and Roll of Fame.
Starting point is 00:44:20 So obviously a pretty fitting one for me to be at. But yeah, I enjoy a lot of music. I've got, it's the first thing I did when I got this house, was get it set up with audio. And you guys can't see here, but I got studio speakers here as well. And a few guitars on the wall over here. But yeah, it's definitely something that I love and kind of pass my time with. But, you know, it's always going to be a part of me.
Starting point is 00:44:47 Have you had any chance to get together with other folks and jam? Not a ton, no. I mean, it's Trevor Williams, actually this past year. I mean, he plays the drums a little bit as hard too, I think. But there's occasionally people you run into that are other metal heads and still like the rock. And, you know, we obviously bond over that stuff. But having got a chance to, I think when he's coming here for his charity golf tournament, I think he's going to come over and we'll see.
Starting point is 00:45:15 But I don't have a drum set for him. But, yeah, everyone's so I like there's some acoustics in the club. house in San Diego and then there's some the clubhouse manager in Seattle also has a guitar and a little amp that I always mess around with when I get a chance to. First of all, Jack asking if he jams with anybody
Starting point is 00:45:40 sent me and Damon into a tizzy. It was amazing question. And I could not wait to hear what his answer was. But a musical guy here, Jesse, we got ourselves a music. I know you are you are very musical. You're very talented when it comes to music. And I know your family is very musical. So again, it's just kind of cool to have a guy like that here. And also, you know, a guy who seems to have other interests and stuff. I just, I really like, I really like him. And I think we got ourselves potentially, you know, a tremendous player here, tremendous guy. Yeah. I mean, he, he comes across as as being just so. personable and and he's clearly is willing to to share a lot about his yes personal interests and whatnot that's not exactly normal stuff for your intro presser with a new
Starting point is 00:46:35 team but but yeah i mean you love the the detail that he provided there i think the intro presser i know you were there it was like 23 minutes long or something right yeah it was pretty long you guys you guys got a pretty good a pretty good idea of of the whole background and and life story with Michael Soroka, which is, which is cool. But yeah, I mean, I think he is a, he's clearly somebody the Diamondbacks targeted like at the beginning of the off season. That was something that stood out to me about his interview is he mentioned that. Like the debacks made their interest known early on. And we just figured it didn't make sense to wait. I mean, it's clear the debacks were interested early on here. And,
Starting point is 00:47:17 and Soroka, he called it a dream scenario, I believe, landing in Arizona where he's lived for the past year and a half and for all the for all the people out there who love who love music like what i mean what's not to like about this yeah yeah we're going to have to get him out to innings fest at least for sure or something like that you'll have a great time but um i will say you're you're absolutely right about that and about that with him like overall it felt like there was an enthusiasm there and i mean again that enthusiasm sometimes displays itself in in the way of how excited he was to speak to us and have this introductory press conference. Mike Hazen said that he was a priority of theirs this offseason when the offseason started.
Starting point is 00:48:02 And not only that, but he also said that they've been trying to get Soroka in the past. Like, Hayzen talked about that. And when Mike was told that, he was kind of surprised. He actually seemed to not know that until we brought it up in the press conference that this team has been interested in him, not just this off season, but in the past. So it makes sense because sometimes there's just something a guy has that you believe in. And you know that once they get healthy and once they kind of get back on track, that they could absolutely be that picture that they were in the past for sure.
Starting point is 00:48:36 You know, but again, I've never felt older than when he talked about learning from music and learning how to play the guitar through guitar hero. Now, I learned how to play the guitar through guitar hero, but I did that at age 32. He meanwhile was 10 years old apparently when he did that. And it makes me feel ancient, ancient, ancient, ancient. But hey, any way that you can get started on music, right? Like, that's the point of stuff like that is it is a gateway to you enjoying playing enough that you actually do become a musician. Megan Plain from Fox 10 did follow up because she needed to know more about his, I believe his records that were on the wall.
Starting point is 00:49:19 and I think we have his answer for that, if you don't mind, Noah. Yeah, so I saw those. I was looking for stuff to fill the studio, and I still have a bunch left. I actually have a metallic one that I need to get up there. I need to get framed. But, yeah, those were two of my favorite albums from those two bands, respectively.
Starting point is 00:49:38 But, yeah, there's a ton. I mean, the Eagles, especially, are a band that I grew up listening to Aton. I got to see them with my dad a few years ago. And they're a bit. band that I can put on and no matter what I'm doing, I have a good time listening to them. So yeah, there's a pretty wide range of things that I'll listen to. But again, I got a whole bunch of records down here that I got to get probably framed. That way I can fill this place.
Starting point is 00:50:05 So when it comes to picking a walkout song, like what's your goal when you're picking that? It depends. I went a little heavier when I was out of the bullpen last year in Chicago. The, it's all about feel for me. I think I got a pitching playlist that I'll listen to on Start Day that I think gets me to a, to a, you know, a good place where I'm, I'm feeling good, I'm happy, I'm ready to get after it, but I'm not, you know, I'm not a raging bull at that point. You know, I don't want to blow it all in the first inning. And I feel like that's something you can do a little bit as a reliever. So when I relieved last year, I switched it to a sad man's tongue by Vol.
Starting point is 00:50:46 is the band who aren't that big over here. People that know them know, but they open for Metallica when they come over here, but they're pretty massive in Europe. So, yeah, that was a pretty good one to hear over the system at Wrigley. First of all, the two albums are Queen and Eagles, incredible albums, incredible bands, right? Again, making me feel old, but appreciated. Also, Jesse, I had never really thought. And this seems so stupid of me, I guess, but I had never really thought of what he said there,
Starting point is 00:51:21 that like a starting pitcher wants to kind of be calm and just like listen to music that kind of gets them mentally prepared and ready. Whereas a reliever wants something that's going to pump them up because, again, a starter can't go out there and just be completely amped in the first inning and be throwing gas and then be gassed after one inning. So it's just something that makes a ton of sense and it seems so logical, but not something I've given much thought to. So I kind of like the insight there. Yeah, that's a great point. I also have not thought about that all that much. I mean, it would be very bizarre if a reliever had like music that was just very toned down and, you know, pretty low key. Like that would be a little strange, especially for a closer.
Starting point is 00:52:10 It would almost be comical, actually. Like now I kind of want to see it. Right. I got to get you pumped. I got to get pumped up as a fan. We all got to get excited here. We got to do the thing. You know, like what are we doing?
Starting point is 00:52:21 We need to be more excited about this. But 100%. 100%. Great guy, though. Looking forward to speaking to him more and looking forward to hopefully, you know, him being that gamble that really pays off for the Diamondbacks as far as finding someone in the starting pitching rotation. We'll see how this whole other situation develops to see if they add another starter.
Starting point is 00:52:42 somehow and then how roles might change. But speaking of roles, we appreciate your guys's role as supporters club members. You guys are awesome. Visit chicken and pickle.com to plan your visit today. And Jesse, before we get out of here, we got to talk about the ballpark pass and the Arizona Diamondbacks, once again, giving fans the best present.
Starting point is 00:56:40 that they can give someone, especially procrastinators like you. It's such an easy gift to grab someone. I know the ad break is over. I know I sound like a shill right now. I promise the Diamondbacks are not paying me for this. But it's just an overall thought, right? Like sometimes especially, I feel like we have a lot of wonderful women who watch this show, who love baseball, and they also have a husband in their life that might be very hard to shop for.
Starting point is 00:57:06 And the more I think about it, the more I look at how much things are cost, you know, cost around this world right now. Things are so expensive. I was trying to buy a vacuum and it was going to cost me like $579. It was unbelievable, Jesse. I'm not spending that much on something to pick up dog hair around my home. I refuse to. But then I thought, like, you can't even really get maybe a video game system these days for the low, low cost of the ballpark pass. Like, it's just such a great value. And I feel like in this life of. consumers and shopping and products and buying people, useless things that they don't really need.
Starting point is 00:57:45 There really is no better gift you can give, like a sports fan or a baseball fan than the gift of being able to just casually go watch baseball at Chase Field anytime because they have the ballpark pass. And, I mean, not really feel guilty about not going when they don't feel like going because overall it didn't cost that much. And it's just one of the best deals in all of sports. I mean, especially for procrastinators like me, Derek.
Starting point is 00:58:08 100%. said it, you know, there aren't. You choose to be a procrastinator, though, and that's the most special part about you. That's what I enjoy the most. You love the thrill of the last minute shopping. And something like this, if you need to buy that big gift for someone in your life, it does give you the safety net of shopping last minute,
Starting point is 00:58:26 maybe not finding the thing, perfect thing for your loved one that you need and being like, you know, you get using tickets to watch baseball. It's not bad. I mean, if that's the fallback, I mean, They're got to be pretty happy with that, right? Yeah, it's not a bad deal. It's not a bad deal. And again, it's just, I think sometimes the thought of getting season tickets is so daunting, you know, like playing fantasy baseball.
Starting point is 00:58:53 It's the worst thing ever. I'd never want to play fantasy baseball ever again. And I probably shouldn't be saying that on this show that I host that's about baseball. But I'll be okay with being honest and saying, I hate fantasy baseball because of the commitment. And some people might feel the same way about a very long baseball season. you know, 81 games over, you know, that stretch and like just not wanting to pay that much money and and in parking and food and all of that stuff. But man, when you're getting it for $300 for an entire season, it's hard to, it's hard to be too mad about the parking and stuff. It works out to like something
Starting point is 00:59:27 like what, like, I mean, it's, it's not very much per game, not very much per game. You're probably better at the math there than I am. Yeah, I, uh, you know, I, uh, you know, I, I mean, so it's truly all, it's truly all 81 home games for $300. I do, I think there might be some blackouts. But for the most part, yeah, I do think that it's, it's all home games. And it's just a matter of like, I think you just, your seat changes or you have to kind of like check in to get your seat or whatever the case may be. But I think it works out like, I think it works out to like $4 a game. No matter where you're sitting, like just getting in the building for four.
Starting point is 01:00:08 $4 is that's that's that's granted you're gonna find some place one but yeah it's no matter where you are it's a pretty that's a pretty pretty solid deal well the diamondbacks are have one more stop on their giving tour as well their holiday giving tour they've been doing a lot of charitable events and they have they have their last one of their holiday season before they let these guys go on on a break and be with their families uh and it's my favorite one jesse i've covered this as press before I might be out there tomorrow to just to hang out and see the guys and and get to you know kind of watch all of this joy spreading but it's it's where they kind of go out with I believe it's 40 underserved teens and they they give them a small budget to do some
Starting point is 01:00:57 holiday shopping and then they get to go do it with current Diamondbacks players Corby and even some former Diamondbacks players like I think Miguel Montero and Augie O'Heda are going to be out there and i i don't know man it's just it's one of those moments that for me seeing all of that seeing uh this organization hold this every year where they have a dinner for for these teens and and help them you know uh find some find some gifts for their loved ones and and pay for it's uh it's it's really cool and it's really what uh this this season this time of year is all about right and especially them helping you know teens right in this community man, Agio Heda, that's a, it's a good, it's a good former D-back name.
Starting point is 01:01:40 Yeah. I've thought about Agio Heda in way too long. I'm just glad to have all of those memories coming back. I feel that way every time I bring up a guy that I haven't talked about in a long time. I'm like, oh, Michael Owings, you know, and Ryan Roberts and stuff like that. But yeah, no, I mean, again, just a cool event here. And let's see who's going to be out there. It's going to be Corbyn. Brandon Garcia is going to be out there. Jordan Lawler, Andrew Salfrank, our guy, Ryan Thompson.
Starting point is 01:02:09 So it should be a great time for those kids. And again, it's just another thing. I've actually been doing a lot of this stuff. And I don't know. I don't really feel like they do it with a ton of attention or a ton of fanfare. They just kind of have these consistent charity events that they do, especially during this time of the year. And you always see so many players involved. Most importantly, though, you always see Corby and Carroll involved. like Corbyn is so is always part of these of these things and again it's cool to see them once again part of this this year. Aghi Ojeda is listed on baseball reference as being five foot nine and I feel like there's just no way that's true.
Starting point is 01:02:48 Were you covering the team at that point, Derek? I guess that'd be a little bit more. I don't think so. I think that's a little bit before my time. Okay. Okay. Yeah. Yeah, my recollection of Augio Heda is that, you know, maybe, maybe more like 5-5, 5-6 would be accurate.
Starting point is 01:03:06 Some of the kids will probably be taller than Agiaheda. That's got to feel good, right? Yeah, for sure, for sure. Well, my internet has forsaken me now, Jesse, so we're going to go ahead and wrap things up. But I will appreciate you stopping by. I appreciate everybody for being here.
