PHNX Arizona Diamondbacks Podcast - Should D-backs AIM to Replicate the Mariners’ Winning Formula in Arizona?

The Mariners' blend of homegrown talent, strategic trades, and pitching depth propelled them to the ALCs, where they fell just one game short of reaching their first World Series in franchise history. With the D-backs’ front office needing to make bold moves this offseason to compete in 2026, can they mirror the Mariners' approach to transform their franchise? An ALLCITY Network ProductionSUBSCRIBE to our YouTube: https://bit.ly/phnx_youtubeALL THINGS PHNX: http://linktr.ee/phnxsportsMERCH https://store.allcitynetwork.com/collections/phnx-lockerALLCITY Network, Inc. aka PHNX and PHNX Sports is in no way affiliated with or endorsed by the City of PhoenixPHNX Events: Get your tickets to PHNX events and takeovers here: https://gophnx.com/events/ALLCITY — including us here at PHNX — is teaming up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America for an exciting three-year partnership. damondog on the ones and twos once again today and he is fired up not only about otani
fleeing the country right in the middle.
Off to Canada, he goes for no reason at all,
just while the middle of an FBI investigation
into professional athletes
and their sports gambling is happening.
Damon found that to be a little curious.
A little, just something that makes you think.
It's fishy, Derek.
I mean, that's all you need to say about it is it's fishy.
You know, all this stuff is alleged, obviously,
but I think we all know his true character
when it comes to the, you know, sports gambling stuff
at the end of the day.
Well, Damon, we have lots to talk about today, including our guy Dalton Feeley from John Boy Media.
We'll be joining us shortly as well as, and we're going to preview the World Series and everything that's happened.
We're also going to take a look at the Seattle Mariners team.
I know we did this with the Brewers, right when they kind of got bounced from the playoffs and people are like, why are you doing this?
Why are we talking about being like a team that didn't make the World Series?
Why are we talking about a team that got bounced from playoffs?
Well, guess what?
We're going to do it again.
We're going to take a look at the Seattle Mariners, and we are going to discuss.
if the Arizona Diamondbacks can find a path to success
that mirrors what Jerry DePoto has done
with his mountain of trades up there in Seattle.
But like I said,
we are thrilled to be joined by our guy,
the one, the only Dalton Feely for John Boy Media.
Dalton, how you doing, sir?
Great to have you here.
Happy World Series Week to you.
Happy World Series Week.
It's going to be interesting.
I wish we had our snakes in there,
but, you know, baseball, baseball.
excited to see two competitive teams going at it.
I know you, I know where your heart lies.
I don't even have to ask you this, but I know that you are in a contentious position
there at the John Boy Media offices.
So I do have to ask, who is the true villain here in this world series?
Is it possible for these guys to get on board with rooting for the Blue Jays?
Or is that just asking entirely too much of fans of an ALE's team at this point?
I think that's asking too much, right?
I thought so.
I thought so.
I think for any fan of a team, like, it's hard to root for a division rival in the World Series.
For sure.
The ALE East, D.N.L. West, AL Central, I'll Central, like, whatever.
So I think it'd be really hard to get any, these guys on board for Blue Jays.
Well, this is a PHNX Blue Jays podcast now. That's where we are.
We have all of our Canadian wares out.
I got the fight. I have the hockey gloves ready to go at any time.
JJ is wearing a Blue Jay's hat, so we want to make sure we're very clear on where we stand here.
But the Blue Jays made it clear where they stand.
John Schneider made some funny comments.
If you want to call them funny, I think that his comments were very true.
I think they came from the heart.
And that was when he was asked about Otani and the possibility of him landing in Toronto in that alternate universe,
instead of landing in L.A.
He did make some nice comments,
said that Otani made some nice comments about the organization,
but then he proceeded to say,
we want the hat back,
and we want the jacket that we gave decoy back.
And I'm going to tell you right now,
this is a level of pettiness that I am so on board for.
Give us back the dog jacket.
We want the dog jacket back now.
That's so funny.
I didn't even, I'll be honest,
I didn't know John Schneider said that.
And listen, when you're going to have to free agents, like, you're going to give everything
you got for this sales pitch, right?
So I guess he didn't, you know, you gave him what you had and you just never got it back.
That's very funny.
Well, we got, we, I'm glad you haven't seen it because I think we have the clip of it here.
Here was what John Schneider had to say, wait, you got it yet?
Yes.
Yeah, let's take a look at that.
This is what John Schneider had to say about getting that hat jacket back.
to feel at Otani, how close do you think two years ago you guys were in your mind to possibly
having him in a white uniform tomorrow? You never know. I think when we met with him,
you felt good about it, you know, and you felt you felt good about the feedback he was giving
about our organization and opportunity here. But you never really know what a player is feeling
in free agency. And there's got, there's a lot of things that have to line up for them personally
too. So you can't really think about what if. You know, you think about the 26 that we have. He's a
great player. I'll say it again. I hope he brought his hat, the Blue Jay hat that he took from us
in our meeting. I hope he brought it back, finally. And the jacket for decoy. It's like,
give us our stuff back already. But he's a great player. You know what I mean? But that aside,
I think that we have a great team and just an unbelievable cast of characters. And, you know,
and players.
And I think things worked out the way they meant to work out.
It is wild, the universe that they live in, right?
Where this happened, right?
This was something where the Blue Jays were, in fact, at least a favorite to land
Otani at one point.
We discussed yesterday the entire flight tracking and everything that happened, you know,
during that one, one faithful day.
But now, you know, the Blue Jays have done an excellent job.
putting together this team, despite the fact that they've missed out on so many big free agents,
you could argue that not Otani, because he's obviously a very special player, but you could
argue that the Blue Jays came together in a, in the way that they were meant to, especially with, you
know, signing Vladita to that long-term deal and having him be such a beast for them in the postseason
and just everything that they've put together up there in Toronto.
Oh, I don't know, he's muted on the time.
I think you're muted.
I might not be.
Who knows?
I was.
being completely honest, coughed, and just forgot to turn it back on.
I don't want to hear my germs.
That's disgusting.
No, I will say for the Blue Jays lineup, they go, like, their lineup is interesting because it's like a throwback approach, right?
Yeah.
They don't strike out a lot.
They put the ball in play.
They still score a lot of runs.
They still out of home runs.
But their approach to play, especially with two strikes, is very interesting.
And they might not have like the superstars that some other teams may have in terms of quantity,
because Vladdy, of course, is one of the league's biggest stars.
But, like, this lineup, they just produced.
Like, you have a guy like Ernie Clement, who's batting over 400 in this postseason.
Like, that is a special performance so far.
And that's one of the reasons why they're here.
And it's cool to see this because another guy, they signed this all of the season,
Anthony Santander, a big ticket free agent in his own right,
who got over $100 million this off season.
That hasn't really been a big contributor to this Blue Jay season with the injuries and performance.
and they still have come together.
You know, Addison Barger having a standout year.
It's been impeccable what Toronto's done.
And I guess now we're going to see can they do it against arguably the best team of baseball and the Dodgers.
What do you, I mean, obviously for me, pitching takes precedent here.
And the Dodgers have incredible starting pitching, right?
But this is, I've been calling it, you know, the irresistible force versus the immovable object, right?
Like it's these two things, unstoppable.
force versus a movable object. But like these two things are are coming to a head here. And I know that
the Dodgers have not only gotten some great starting pitching, but some, you know,
great relief pitching from Roki Sasaki and a few other guys after they struggled all year long,
essentially to figure out their bullpen situation. Is this a situation where the Dodgers in your
mind are a clear favorite? Or do you think that this is going to be a good series between one of the
best offenses and essentially one of the best pitching staffs.
I think you nailed it perfectly in terms of like what we should be looking for is
this Blue Jays lineup versus this Dodgers rotation.
And like, sure, we might have our natural biases against the Dodgers making our jokes
or whatever because they're in our division.
But the pitching, a one four year a way that's incredible.
It's incredible.
It's 64 in a third inning, 81Ks.
Like they've gotten big time performances from everyone, all four guys.
Yeah.
So I'm super excited.
Like you want it not to work.
for them so bad, right? Like, so much has gone wrong for us in our franchise, right? Like,
you just want them to have, like, one pitcher not work out. And I never root for guys to not do well
unless they're on the Dodgers, because that's the only situation where I truly want them
to be handicapped by a move they made. But everything seems to work out for them. And, like,
even here we have Roki Sasaki emerging as this, you know, filling this needed role for this team
coming out of the bullpen like he has. And even he was,
you know, a guy that you might have deemed a little bit of a failure.
Maybe that was a case where they finally made a mistake in signing a guy that was a
phenom that wasn't going to work out.
Yet here we are in the most crucial games of the year.
And he is pitching high leverage situations for them.
And he has been lights out.
So it's like, again, you can't, you do got to tip your cap because they went out and
they got the right guys.
And those guys have delivered for them in the biggest moments so far this off season or this
postseason.
Absolutely.
And like the thing with the Dodgers, too, is like we, a lot of people,
including myself. I thought this is going to be the greatest team that ever play baseball this season
in terms of regular season wins. They didn't have that season and they finished third in the National
League. This is the first year since 21 where they didn't have a buy. But this is now, the postseason
has been in the time where they've really clicked and have looked like this dominant team. But
the only thing I'll counter to myself here is the rotation has been amazing. The lineup has been
producing. They've been playing well, not like super great that we've seen in the past. But the lineup has
done their job. The bullpen is shaky. So I think where the games are going to really be decided
is can Toronto get to the Dodgers bullpen? Because a lot of teams so far, the Reds, you know,
we see in the wildcard series, we saw the Reds get to the bullpen late in the game, have some crazy
eighth innings. The Phillies had a couple crazy games. Brewers not as much because they didn't get
into the bullpen. So I think it can be a series. I think the Dodgers should 100% be the favorite.
But if the Bullerjays can get a force a short outing from Snell or Yamamoto to start the series,
that changes the narrative for sure.
It's funny because it's not even a short outing they need, right?
They need to force a quality start out of Blake Snell and Yamamoto, right?
Where they give up like two runs and only go six innings.
And if that's the case, then you feel pretty good about what the Blue Jays can do against the bullpen,
especially if they're able to do that in multiple games and wear this bullpen out a little bit.
You also have the Rust versus Rest kind of situation here.
If the Dodgers had more than enough time,
it feels like even since the Blue Jays played their last game,
it's been in eternity.
But the Dodgers have been off for even longer than that.
So, I mean, I know baseball is a game that you tend to stay in a rhythm.
It tends to be better.
I just feel like once again, even though the Dodgers have had a longer layoff,
I still feel like this is advantage for the Dodgers,
because the rest seems to impact more.
of the bats, I think, than the pitching staff.
So you're just allowing the Blue Jays bats to get a little bit cold while the Dodgers
pitching staff has had a chance to rest up.
That's totally fair.
But you know, it's really funny.
Do you know the stat about Russ versus Rustin, especially in this instance?
No, let's hear.
So a team to force a sweep in the seven game LCS versus a team that's forced all seven games in
LCS.
It's going back to 1985.
There has been four other instances where this is, which where they're,
this has happened, all four times the team that forced seven games in the LCS went on the win
the world series.
So, though I, so right.
So though I believe and you believe it, we hope that the rest really helps the Dodgers.
History is shown that's not the case.
And maybe you're right.
Maybe this is going to be an outlier for this stat because it's helping the Dodgers pitching,
which has been dominant.
It's hurting Blue Jay's lineup, which has been dominant.
And that could be a factor.
But if there's any glimmer of hope for Blue Jay's fan,
and Toronto fans are non-Dodger people out there.
That history has shown the rust and the rest,
like it leans towards Blue Jays and favoring them.
Let's hope that's the case, my man.
Let's hope that's the case.
Overall, though, again, it's a fun matchup.
We were rooting for our sea backs here,
aka the sea snakes, aka the Mariners.
That ends sadly.
I am heartbroken for that fan base,
especially like this is one of those situations
that it's like,
would it have just been better to lose
in the division series round
than to get this close
to get one game away
from your first world series
and franchise history
and to fall short?
I don't know.
I tend to want things to just be over
faster if it's going to break my heart anyway.
So that's just me.
But I mean,
you got to tip your cap overall
to what the Mariners did.
However, it's hard to feel like
they had a better chance
of beating the Dodgers.
than the Toronto Blue Jays.
I do feel like the Blue Jays are built a little bit more
for this situation.
I think that they have been, you know,
obviously been able to put up a lot of runs this postseason.
I think that's gonna be helpful against the Dodgers lineup
or against that Dodgers pitching staff.
And I also think that Bo Bichette returning
is gonna be a big lift for Toronto in the World Series,
even if he doesn't, you know, come back and necessarily perform,
you know, like at a high level,
or come back and immediately contribute to the offense.
I think that just him being back is going to be a huge lift for this team.
And that's something that can really propel you during, you know,
this kind of rigorous stretch that these teams have gone through over the postseason.
I will say, I think when you look at these rosters in the ALCS,
with the Blue Jays and Mariners going to rewinding for a second,
the Mariners big advantage was pitching.
I think you look at these two rotations and the Mariners had the advantage.
But in reality, the Blue Jays lineup was so good.
It forced the Mariners starting pitching to not go deep into games,
which is what the Blue Jays are going to have to do in the World Series to have a shot.
So you did it once for Seattle versus one of the best rotations in baseball.
You're now playing the best rotation in the postseason this year by far.
Can you force these guys to not go more than six innings?
And I think another factor here is Dave Roberts as a manager, right?
Like he's had it pretty easy, right?
like he hasn't had to make very many tough decisions and so far the starting especially those starting
pitchers have you know have given him that through this playoff run but i i also still feel like
managing could become a huge factor here and uh i give the advantage there to the blue jays over
dave roberts for sure but with with all due respect dave roberts does have the experience he's
been here quite quite a few times and kind of knows how to how to manage in a world series
I think I do lean Dodgers actually for that exact reason.
Being there, he's had it easy, but like there's been just not nearly as much stress on this Dodgers roster.
I think ultimately just having the success that the Dodgers have had recently and being in the postseason so much,
an advantage to Roberts to like feeling out and like having the experience of what a World Series.
Because this is obviously the biggest series.
Like John Schneider has not managed a World Series team yet.
So it's going to be, I don't know if there's a learning curve or,
if you make a move too early or too late.
I just lean, I think experience does play a role here.
So advantage to Dodgers.
I often say when I came online as a baseball fan was when I was around like eight,
nine, 10 years old.
And that was a very long time ago, Dalton.
I'm not going to pretend like it wasn't.
But when I did come online as a baseball fan and started paying attention to things,
I remember one Don Mattingly being one of the greatest baseball.
baseball players that played the game at that time.
Not only that, but he looked like the MLB logo to me, just in general.
But, you know, here he has finally his first chance to go to a World Series as a coach.
And I just feel like that's a real cool thing.
But again, I just, I wonder if that can impact any of those Yankees fans around the office
that might not find a way for themselves to find it in their hearts to root for the Blue Jays,
that maybe they can do that.
Maybe I don't know.
I'm trying.
I'm trying here.
I just want to get some people on board with hating the Dodgers.
We need to get as many folks together.
It's the most American thing you can do is root for Toronto right now.
That's how we feel.
Well, Dalton, I appreciate you, buddy.
We thank you for your time.
Make sure to follow everything those guys are doing over there at John Boy Media.
And, of course, it's going to be exciting.
What's your prediction here?
I know I put you in a tough spot,
but do you have a number of games that's going to go
and who you think is going to win?
Yeah, I give a lot of credit to the Blue Jays,
but it's Dodgers and five for me.
You're a bad person.
You're a bad person.
We shouldn't have a, we should have had a lot of the show.
This was a terrible idea.
I'm sorry.
I'm kind of silly.
Always serious.
Yeah, all right.
Well, we know where you look.
We know what you feel in your heart, Dalton.
We know that for sure.
But again, make sure to follow our guy,
Dalton Feely.
He is at D. Feeley 14.
And also check out everything John Boy Media is doing, of course.
And he's also not only head researcher over there, but like the warehouse games MVP too many times.
So we thank you again for your expertise, sir.
We'll see you next time.
Appreciate it, Derek.
Get a man.
Later, buddy.
I knew it was going to be hard to try to get those folks over at John Boy on board with hating the Toronto Blue Jays.
Or rooting for the Toronto Blue Jays.
but I just had to see.
I had to see.
I had to test the waters.
When we come back,
we are going to talk
about how this Seattle Mariners team
got built
and how the Arizona Diamondbacks
can get to the position
that they currently are in
with what appears to be a solid lineup
and solid pitching staff
that is going to be, you know,
competing for the next couple of years for sure.
But we're going to do that
on the other side of this break.

Well, Ski to you all, great to have you guys here.
R.A., Ryan, Debra.
You guys are all amazing.
and it's great to see you guys here during the off season.
Of course, we know that the Diamondbacks have a lot of moves to make.
And moves are a big thing that made the Seattle Mariners team what they are.
In fact, I've probably said something stupid on their show before
where I said that they had homegrown talent.
Well, not much of it.
I mean, when you look at their starting lineup, the Diamondbacks, the Seabacks,
the Sea Snakes, they have two guys in their lineup.
two of the biggest most important pieces,
but nonetheless, two guys that are homegrown talent.
And again, the biggest thing that made the Mariners what they are
was their ability to make moves when they weren't competitive
and take advantage of other teams.
Now, in our history, we know that we make jokes about the Diamondbacks
often getting whatever we want from Jerry to Poto.
That tends to be because those moves that the Mariners make look very,
I say, I guess advantageous for one team.
and maybe the opposite team, maybe the team the Mariners are doing the deal with initially.
However, with time, you see those moves work out for the Mariners,
and eventually it culminated in this particular starting lineup that we see
falling one game short of the World Series.
Now, the question here is much like we posed with the Brewers,
where is this enough considering this is a franchise that has never even made it to the World Series,
and the Diamondbacks at least have two appearances there with one trophy to show
for it that should we be emulating a franchise like this? Well, I will say when it comes to the
Mariners and the Diamondbacks, they do share, you know, some similarities here. They are both
what are considered small market teams, even though neither team is an actual small market team.
Bless you to Damon.
Thanks, Derek. Small market teams in baseball are stupid, Damon, right? Because small market teams
basically just means teams that aren't in the biggest area spending the most money. They're not
from New York or California or, you know, whatever right.
I think what it truly means, and we see it on the, those charts all the time,
like the revenue to payroll charts is that, you know, you have the worst TV deal.
I think what it really actually means at its heart of heart is these teams are the teams with
the worst television deals.
And in large part, that's due to market share and fans in their city and, you know,
Miami and Phoenix.
Like, we struggle with that obviously.
But other sports don't have to put up with that, do they?
Like, I know one time as a as a, as a, as a.
as a Cardinals fan, my life was hell when I was a kid, right?
Here in Arizona, you couldn't watch Cardinals games locally unless they sold out.
They would be blacked out otherwise.
And do you know how often Cardinals games sold out when they sucked?
Sometimes zero times in a season.
Maybe the first game of the year, right?
So we had weird, like, I don't know, we had weird rules like that.
I know at one point that felt like it impacted being able to enjoy our local team.
But I really don't feel like that.
and again each organization has ran in the way it is and how you run that organization impacts the team you're able to put out on the field right so we've talked about how much the diamondbacks reinvest back into their team they're definitely not one of those teams that don't spend the money they make they just don't make enough money like you were saying well i mean and to answer your question derrick i i just i want to just make this very clear you ask do other sports do this no yeah other sports do not do this the dodgers do not get to sign their own television deal and then use all that money on their
payroll and defer all these contracts because they have it in the bank versus the Diamondbacks
who make a TV deal that is, I don't know, one-tenth of what the Dodgers are making annually.
And it's, I mean, it's just not even equal playing grounds.
Whereas the NFL and the NBA, they do equal revenue sharing, Derek.
Yeah.
That's crazy.
What an idea.
Oh, my goodness.
It's just like having a salary cap and making it that teams have to spend so much money on
their teams and have to can only spend so much on max deals for their players so that they're not
just restructuring the money and paying a guy $2 million a year and then paying them the rest
of the billion that they owe them at a later time right so yeah it's it's insane and it's the
reason why we often accuse the dodgers of breaking baseball right yeah yeah i mean again it's why
their role most likely be a lockout is because of that exact reason because of the
because of tanner scott danner scott broke baseball and because of that now here we sit at this position
But the Mariners, right?
Like, they are a team that's been a savvy team.
In fact, this is crazy, Damon, in 10 seasons, eight years as the, I don't know what he, he's not,
I don't know, the title isn't GM, I don't think.
Like, lead executive is what they call Jerry DePoto for the Mariners, but regardless.
Like the decision maker.
The decision maker.
He has made 190 trades.
190 trades.
Not 190 moves.
Not 190 acquisitions trades and otherwise.
No, he has made 100.
190 trades. The man wheels and deals. And I think my favorite part about Jerry Depoto is that when he
brings in talent that he likes and he trades for them, he extends them and keeps them as part of this
team. And he does that fairly quickly. He shows these guys that he wants them to be a long-term
part of their deal. And that's where the majority of these other pieces that aren't Cal
Raleigh and aren't Julio Rodriguez came from, right? And again, this is why this is, this is the only way
with the Diamondbacks relying so heavily on their farm system,
this is the only way at times that they can actually get better, you know?
And part of that, again, now I'm not suggesting that they trade Cotel Marte
or anybody else that's really good on this team.
But at times, it does take trading away veteran players that are seen as bigger stars in the
moment for younger pieces that will help you, right?
That's something the Diamondbacks very much did at the trade deadline.
Their situation was more of their hand being forced because,
The team record was bad.
The team sucked at the time, and these guys were all on expiring contracts.
So trading them made all the sense in the world.
However, again, it is about making those moves at the right time and bringing in young pieces, right?
In fact, they did that with J.P. Crawford.
You and I were talking about it before the show, right?
J.P. Crawford sucked at the time in like 2018.
He was struggling to get playing time, and they traded him for Gene Seguera,
who the Mariners got through one of the trade.
You could argue that they lost.
the trade with the Diamondbacks that sent Catelle Marte to the Diamondbacks, right? But again,
eventually they turned Gene Seguer into J.P. Crawford, and Gene Seguer is not even playing
baseball anymore. And now you have J.P. Crawford being, you know, a big part, obviously what the
Mariners did this season and a big part of their postseason run. So it's like you have things like
that. But a lot of their other trades are crazy. Jorge Polanco being acquired via trade with
the twins back in 2024. And like one of the main pieces of that deal was
Anthony Disclofani.
Make it make sense, Damon.
We just DFAed that man, didn't we?
And this man was just a part of the trade that brought them Horei Polanco.
It's just, it's one move after the next.
And aside from, all jokes aside, aside from trades with the Diamondbacks,
it feels like the Mariners just make moves and win the trades eventually.
It takes time for them to play out, but it feels like they always win the trades.
It feels like Mike Hazen, this offseason, to your point, Derek, is going to need to wheel and deal.
a lot to find a way to fill all the holes on this roster with the limited resources that the
Diamondbacks have. So truly it's going to need to be a Mike Hayes and masterclass of all masterclasses this offseason from a transactional standpoint.
And I think that a lot of that is farm system and the I think the Mariners have done a better job developing their farm system in recent years in the D-backs.
Especially pitching.
Yes. Well, I mean, no question about it.
But you look at the, you know, Diamondbacks farm guys recently, the big.
names, right? Pretty much only Corby and Carroll has worked out. Like, out of the largest names,
I mean, you could say Gabby Moreno, but he was a trade piece, and that's kind of what I think
we're asking for, is more of that this offseason, fill multiple holes trading one guy,
one guy like a Dalton Varshow for a Lorda Sanna, Gabby Moreno, right? Like, that's the kind of
model, I think, that Mike Hazen needs to follow here, to your point. But yeah, yeah, it's going to be a big
off season and yeah the like the alec thomas is the drew joneses those didn't work out as much as i think
think you want them to right but like the the the wald schmits and the the slayed cowls and stuff i
think those guys that next crop like it's going to be a big crop of of prospects for mike hazen in order
to take this team and franchise to the next level whether that's trading them or those guys
developing and being staples of the team well like kevin concaeos says once upon a time we got rid of
goldie and that kind of felt like one of these kind of moves right unfortunately
Unfortunately, that didn't work out for the Diamondbacks really in any way.
Carson Kelly was a decent catcher while he was here, right?
But outside of that, you couldn't really.
And he couldn't hit.
I'm not, I'm not even going to.
I said decent.
And I said catcher.
I didn't say decent hitter.
I said decent catcher.
What does that entail then?
I mean, I guess whenever you say, if you say decent first baseman, I'm thinking of his value,
according to other first baseman across baseball.
Was he decent or below average?
Catcher is a little different, though, because I feel like he did a great job.
with the pitching staff and a lot of the pitchers that were here during, you know, when he was
behind the plate kind of flourished, right? Like, I felt like he helped guys, you know, look pretty good
back there. But at the same time, I'm not, I'm not arguing with you. I'm definitely not saying,
you know, in that case that things worked out for the Diamondbacks, you know, you, Goldschmidt
went off to be an MVP for the St. Louis Carlin. I mean, if Carson Kelly was what he was this year for
the D-backs, then the Diamondbacks, it wouldn't even have been that bad of a trade. You'd be sitting there
and you'd be like, ah, I mean, you're probably not going to get back an MVP caliber player with, you know, when you trade one away anyways. That's the name of the game.
Same thing with Luke Weaver, right? Luke Weaver looked unhittable for a period of time.
Like a month.
Yeah.
If we got that Luke Weaver, then yeah, it would be hard to argue that they lost the trade.
But that one's a loss, period.
There's no way to equate it.
The only one, the only thing you can say with that one is much like the guys that the Diamondbacks got rid of at this trade deadline, that there was no chance to Goldschmidt resigned.
here anyway at the end of that season.
And the MVP year that he was, that he had with the Cardinals was still probably going to
happen with the Cardinals just as a free agent instead of being acquired.
Because the Cardinals did do what Jerry Depoto does.
They traded for Goldschmidt and then they extended him.
And that's what DePoto is very good at.
And that not only makes guys feel like very welcomed and appreciated, but it also gives
you that loyalty.
So that perhaps beyond the extension, if you're a real stud that we want for even longer
than that, much like Catele Marte.
That's why Catea is so loyal
to this team. I'm not sure if that loyalty
is there any longer after this dispute
over his availability and the way
that he spent that time that he did, but
I still think it's there, and I think a big part of it
is the fact that they showed so much
trust and appreciation that Cotel
by extending him. Also,
it doesn't hurt that Cotel gave them
a pretty good deal
on extending him, whereas he could
have probably made more money elsewhere,
right? But again, the pitching
staff for Mariners was outstanding this year. Luis Castillo acquired via a trade in 2022 and he signed
a five-year extension. Andres Munoz acquired in 2020 and a deal with the Padres, right? And then
I believe they extended him as well. So, you know, the Mariners, again, they have an emphasis on,
you know, the player development pipeline, which the Diamondbacks have had some faults with, right?
Their player development pipeline is not strong, especially when it comes to pitching.
You could say at times, though, like there's still some guys that have come out,
Ryan Nelson, right?
He's a guy that emerged out of their farm system that was developed here and became what he has become here.
So it's not fought.
But it's, yeah, but I mean, again, it's a very small amount of guys.
Like there's not like this huge track record of guys being developed and making it at a major league level, right?
In fact, it's, there was a track record of the Diamondbacks having the number one pitching prospect.
in baseball, like, for like three years running and every, all three of the guys that they brought up were
not good.
Yeah.
Like, it's, it's like the Diamondbacks have clear, you know, clearly have talent at the pitcher position at times and they still can't develop them.
And then you have a guy, you know, one of those guys was Archie Bradley, to be fair, who was,
ended up being a very productive MLB player, but was he wasn't the starting pitcher like ace that,
you know, you maybe thought he was going to be at one point in his career.
So.
Well, and I mean, overall, I think, I don't know.
I mean, the Diamondbacks have gotten screwed,
especially due to injury in so many cases when it comes to pitching.
So you can't 100% fault them,
but you can say that they don't really focus on developing young guys.
Like they have Daniel Egan right now in the minors who will probably see Major League playing time in 2026.
And he looks like an absolute stud.
But again, you got to develop that.
And it seems like the Diamondbacks in this front office, they're too focused at times on making, you're committing that money to these splashy, big ticket, you know, names that you bring in and don't work out.
And the Diamondbacks, once again, aren't the Dodgers where financially, if that doesn't work out, we'll be able to overcome it.
We can't. We cannot do that.
We can't overcome it.
So from that perspective, they need to focus on extending those guys.
that they've developed once they've shown that they are becoming, you know,
quality major league players and keeping them here on this team long term, you know,
and that's the biggest difference here between the Mariners and the Diamondbacks.
It's not to say that the Mariners still don't trade even their young guys away.
They've done that and they did that this season with the Diamondbacks for Josh Naler
and for Ehuenios-Weres.
One of those guys absolutely worked out for them.
And then the other guy, Gino, who struggled this season,
still hit one of the biggest home runs of their entire post-season.
run for them as well. Both guys were very valuable for them and both guys are the reason that they
got as far, or a big part, not the reason. That's strong, but at least a part of why they went as far as
they did. It just also makes me think that like, again, the Diamondbacks have so many things to
fix that at this point, I know we're going to, we're going to get crazy with free agency this offseason
on this show because it's all we can really talk about and it's all we can hope for. But in reality,
the Diamondbacks have so many things to fix
that they should probably be focusing on,
you know,
I guess making some trades
for younger talent rather than necessarily
going out there and trying to land
some of the big names that even we've been discussing.
Yeah, I mean, do you think the Diamondbacks don't extend their players?
I feel like this current...
No, no, I think they try to.
But I'm saying like, I will say that
going after guys like Jordan Montgomery and Corbyn Burns
and stuff limits their ability
to extend everybody that they want to extend, right?
I mean, other than Gabby, who even could they possibly be looking to extend on this team at this point?
Corbyn, Jerry, Cattell, all done.
Right.
The pitchers are, I mean, I thought got extended, right?
So, like, he's...
Justin Martinez?
I mean, I got it.
No, he got...
Justin Martinez was extended at the beginning of this season.
Yeah, you're right.
That's fair.
They've extended everybody that they want to extend, I think, on this roster, except for maybe a Gabby Moreno, who has a ton of injury things, in my opinion that you disagree with.
His value is, to be fair, his value has never been lower since he's been with this franchise as it is right now.
Probably, yeah.
And that probably doesn't mean that he is less likely to want to sign the extension than the Diamondbacks maybe off putting something on the table and saying we would like you to maybe consider this offer.
And I'm sure it's like lower than what he was expecting prior to this season.
Right.
You know, that's all speculation, obviously.
I feel that yes, like the Diamondbacks are doing a good job of keeping their best players in house, in my opinion.
They're doing a good job of being aggressive in the off season and trying to make additions.
But this year-
Too aggressive, though.
I mean, like landing the highest, again, Corbyn Burns fell in their lap.
Yeah, I don't think that was too much.
I don't feel like that was them pursuing it.
But still, at the same time, decisions need to be made.
I know Corbin Burns is one of the best pitchers in baseball, so it's hard to say no to that.
At the same time, though.
And how often do you get a guy like that that wants to come here and wants to be a part of this?
It's just...
Well, they knew they were losing Zach Gowan and or Merrill Kelly.
So I think that's part of the reason that they were like comfortable going after
Robert Burns is because they were like, we're going to have to resign one of these guys anyways
and we think this dude is better than them, which he is.
I mean, obviously the injury is what it is.
But I just think that there's such a limited amount of resources this year that
Hazen is going to have to just
pull some things out of his hat
and make some moves that just
kind of shock the world, right?
I mean, it's going to shock
the fan base if he makes the moves
that you and I think that he might make because it's either
going to be again
just to put it out there.
It's going to have to be either a
Cattel Marte, right? And
receiving an absolute haul
in return and not just prospects
or it would have to be
some top prospects, including
someone like a Ryan Walschmidt.
Perhaps even some of the guys that they acquired.
The Diamondbacks can't really afford to trade off
their pitching talent.
So, you know, outfielders make a lot of sense
considering that their outfielder's are young
and they have a lot of them.
It's just, you know, who.
Who wants those guys? That's the other thing.
Well, I mean, I'll tell you, a lot of
teams like Ryan Walshman.
Oh, well, absolutely. Sorry, not Walshman.
You dangle that out there. But you're, yeah,
you're talking about like an Alex.
Alec. I'll give you Jake McCarthy and a
Walschmidt and I feel like that only makes it less of a deal it's that yeah I
have to say that that's that's less valuable than just like when we made the
brewers take Jordan Montgomery along with Shelby Miller if they wanted him but
but yeah no I mean looking back at what the Mariners have done right they made those
smart trades with the Diamondbacks when the time was right but not making those
big moves until they were comfortable with their roster and what they had built
right so I don't know man I'll tell you it's looking
at the blueprint, we did this, the brew print with the, you know, with the brewers. We got the
blueprint here with the Mariners. But, you know, again, committing to the youth development seems to be a big
thing that, that they have done that the Diamondbacks, not to say they haven't followed in those
footsteps, but they definitely need to do a better job with the development and building their pitching
depth. Like the Mariners have an incredible amount of pitching depth that the Diamondbacks just
don't have. And that goes into their minor league system. And Mike Hazen admitted that. That was one of
the first things Hayeson said. Haysen said that even though this team looked deep, it really wasn't.
And once you got past those front line guys, there wasn't enough support beyond that.
I will say, though, that even the next guys up would have been like a Tommy Henry or, you know,
some other, like other guys that also got injured. So I don't, I don't truly fault them for not having
that next line of pitchers, you know, there. But making those strategic trades that prioritized long
term team control over short term fixes.
That needs to be something this team commits to.
Patience.
Patience is a virtue, right?
That is something for sure, as well as defining, you know, what D-back's baseball is.
Because that's still something I think that is lacking here and what exactly that means.
I think they got back around to it at the, you know, at the end of the season.
And I do think that J.R. House is going to help them over at third base get back to that quite a bit.
But we'll see.
We'll see if they can do that.
Avoid spending on aging stars, by the way.
Let's stop doing that.
Just saying, that's, that's got to be something the Diamondbacks just completely,
unless it's a guy that's past his prime and just needs a shot,
like a one Paul Goldschmidt, who I do not hate, by the way,
we'll need to get into that.
But we're going to take a quick break.
On the other side of this break,
we have more unfortunate news to discuss in the wrongful death trial of former Arizona
Diamondbacks pitcher Tyler Skaggs.
We're going to do that here in a moment.

Well, this is always a bummer to talk about,
especially considering that in my years of covering this team,
one of the more exciting Diamondbacks players I covered at one point was Tyler Skaggs.
And as many of you know, Tyler Skaggs did die due to a very awful situation
where he was given a fentanyl-laced pill that led to his death at the age of 27.
And this pill was given to him by former Los Angeles Angels communication director Eric Kay.
The other day, on Tuesday, Mike Trout testified in the wrongful death trial
and gave his thoughts on Tyler Skagg suffering a fatal overdose back in 2019.
This is a $118 million civil trial against the.
the Angels organization to determine whether they are responsible for K giving Skaggs that fentanyl-l-laced pill.
And I don't really feel like Trout held back.
He talked about his friendship with Skaggs from the time they roomed together to playing for the Angels.
They were both drafted out of high school as teenagers and were very close friends.
He also discussed confronting Eric Kay.
And I'll tell you, this whole situation is so weird to me because this,
this person, this communications director job, is very similar to the people, the really good,
great people I work with over at the Diamondbacks, you know, PR staff over there. And I mean,
these people are amazing. They're the reasons why we are set up with some of these wonderful,
fun interviews that we do with the players. And it's the reason why, for some inexplicable reason,
I'm allowed to roam around with a press credential. But I just can't imagine someone with the team
being directly involved like this in a player's death, being the one to supply that player
with the drug, a drug that not only wasn't the pill that he expected it to be, but killed him.
And I still find myself almost ignoring this situation as a whole because of how tragic it is.
People often blame scags and people say things like, you know, when something like this happens,
like you know, you as the person that was seeking out the drugs are responsible.
But I will say this.
Like professional athletes oftentimes are far too busy for this kind of thing.
And they don't really have the time nor the connections to go find like a drug dealer or someone that's going to supply them.
Many of them do.
I'm not going to act like it's not out there.
There's plenty of properly situations like that.
I don't know about that exists.
But to have it happen in the organization, have it be an employee of the team that was providing him with,
these drugs and essentially the drug that eventually killed them is just crazy. It's just crazy. And that's
the point where you can't help but wonder, you know, how complicit the angels here are considering
that they knew, they seemed to know about this and seemed to know that this was a problem. I mean,
in the trial, Mike Trout testified that at one point he confronted Kay and went up to him,
apparently telling him, you have two boys at home, you have to get this right, meaning he knew
what Eric Kay was doing in the clubhouse and what he was supplying at least Tyler Skaggs with,
let alone who knows what other players. But, you know, this wrongful death lawsuit filed by Skaggs'
widow Carly basically seeks damages after accusing the franchise of violating its own rules by
allowing this man to remain on staff despite the dangers of drug abuse that he was posing to the
clubhouse. And again, this is a man that was responsible for setting up interviews with players
and giving them kind of a preparation on how they could, you know, how, how this whole situation,
or, you know, how they can answer certain interview questions or what to expect. But like the weird part
here is that Mike Trout also testified that there was some crazy,
crazy stuff going on with this man and the players. In fact, the players used to pay him for stunts,
according to his testimony, like taking a fastball to the leg, shaving off his eyebrows,
and even at one point eating a pimple off of Mike Trout's back. You heard that right. I didn't
misread that. I didn't misspeak. Eating a pimple off of this man's back. So, uh,
That's not safe for work, Derek.
That should have had a disclaimer on the front of it.
I just need people to know how weird this situation with this man was.
And at one point, even the money he was being paid by players to do such disgusting stunts was questioned.
Like, there was people that said, like, maybe we shouldn't be paying this man because we think that he's using this money for a bad purpose.
And that bad purpose was apparently supplying at least one baseball player we for sure know of.
with drugs in the clubhouse.
So this is, and again, when you hear that stuff,
the first thing I think, honestly, as stupid as it is,
is I'm like, I bet the players loved him.
This man, I mean, coming as a guy that dyed his hair purple
and what other dumb crap did I do,
I took off my shirt just because somebody on the clubhouse
took off his shirt and all sorts of crap.
But I get it.
I mean, there's a chance that these players love this guy
because of these outrageous stunts.
And again, that's the reason why between that
and apparently being good at his job that he was not terminated due to these allegations
that were apparently being, you know, levied against him before all of this took place.
But you can't help but wonder if this, if action was taken, if Tyler Skaggs would still be
alive to this day.
And that's the reason for this lawsuit.
So it's unfortunate.
It's terrible.
And I hate it.
As a person, like I said, that at one point cover Tyler.
I thought the world of him.
And I thought he was going to be along with Patrick.
Patrick Corbyn and sane as it is to say, Trevor Power.
I thought those guys were all going to be crazy good for this Diamondbacks team.
Boy, was I wrong?
At least about two out of three of them, but at least in the situation of Skaggs,
it wasn't about him not being good at baseball.
It was about, you know, bad decisions being made and, you know, again, being supplied
with something he didn't know he was being supplied with.
And I agree with what you guys are saying, too.
I think this goes beyond Eric Kay.
I think this goes to who he got the drugs from.
And I think that there, you know, obviously needs to be a lot of people held accountable here for what happened to Tyler Skaggs.
But I don't know.
It all sucks.
Life can suck sometimes.
And this definitely is one of those instances.
But we're going to take a quick break.
On the other side of this break, we're going to get a little bit more positive.
And we were going to talk about that time back in 2023 where Alec Thomas turned the bank into a snake pit.
We're going to do that.

Damon, today is a very important day in Arizona.
Diamondbacks history.
And I will say it's a day that, quite frankly, I guess not today.
Today is not the actual day.
It was October 24, 2023, a day that will live in infamy when the Arizona Diamondbacks
went on to beat the Philadelphia Phillies, win the NLCS, and become the seventh team in Major
League postseason history to lose both games.
one and two on the road in a best of seven series and come back to win the series.
The Diamondbacks played that second game seven in franchise history previously.
The only game seven we've ever played, Damon, was World Series 2001 on November 4th versus the New York Yankees.
And you remember how that went.
So the Diamondbacks went on to beat the Phillies.
This was the Phillies that's played their first ever game seven.
That was their first ever game seven in any post-season series.
And they came back to win that game.
Cotell Marte was named NLCS MVP after batting 387.
The man went 12 for 31 with a 406 on-base percentage of 581 slug,
3 RBI, 4 doubles, a triple, two runs, one walk and one stolen base.
He became the second Diamondbacks player in history to win the MVP NLCS MVP award.
previously it was Craig Counsel back in 2001.
He also became the sixth Dominican-born player
to win MVP of the LCS,
joining David Ortiz, Albert Pujols,
Placito Polanco, Nelson Cruz, and Jeremy Pena.
So again, big day, but nothing about this day
is any better than the day when
Alec Thomas planted the flag at the bank.
And I mean, that is a moment that makes me,
as a fan of the Arizona Diamondbacks,
wants to extend Alec Thomas to a hundred-year contract worth $9 billion.
I know his play and his performance doesn't really match that deal,
but I don't care because this man planted an Arizona Diamondbacks flag
right in the middle of Philadelphia and then walked out unscathed.
Not one fight.
Not one fight.
It's amazing.
It was amazing.
So what an incredible feat.
And, of course, what an incredible feat.
and, of course, what an incredible day in this team's history.
Like, that was something, I think, that forever changed the high watermark for this franchise
during the stretch that we're currently on.
If the Diamondbacks don't win that game, I think everybody would be fine with it.
I don't think anybody would be clamoring that they were screwed out of it or that they
were better than the Phillies.
Like, quite frankly, a lot of people believe if the Phillies go on to that World Series
that they beat the Rangers and win.
And I don't know if I believe that or can argue with it.
But I will say that overall, you know, again, it was an amazing thing to accomplish
that gave so many players on this team a taste of what they can do,
a taste of what that getting to that mountaintop is like.
And I'm sure that that's something that Corbyn Carroll, Cotel Marte,
and Geraldo Pardomo all want back in their lives desperately.
I don't know how they get there.
I don't know what 2026 holds for this team.
I'm confident that if they can find a way once again to do what they've done over the past few seasons and be surprising,
especially in an underdog role and survive the first half of 2026 that when those reinforcements come at the All-Star Break,
this team might be magical once again.
But they have to figure out how the hell they're going to have a starting rotation, a bullpen,
and a full starting lineup with a shoestring budget going into 2026.
So we'll be here to cover it every moment of the way.
We're not going anywhere.
We'll be here every day at 12 p.m.
Though we do have a fun day scheduled for you guys next Tuesday.
We're going to do a watch-along of Game 4 of the World Series
and then do a post-game show after that game.
So make sure to join us for that.
Hopefully it is not a sweep scenario for the Los Angeles Dodgers at that point.
God, let's hope not.
But hey, we thank you guys for joining us.

Baseball is fun, but it's so much more fun when you really question why Shohayotani is fleeing the United States when FBI is investigating athletes.
