Hello and welcome to the D-Backs P-HNX show here on the PHNX network.
My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX.
Happy to have you guys joining us.
Of course, this week's show is brought to you by Drafking's Sportsbook, America's top-rated sportsbook app.
It is live now in Arizona with mobile sports betting just in time for football.
Trust me, I fully took advantage of it this weekend.
To celebrate, Draft King's Sportsbook is giving all new customers a can't miss offer,
bet just $1 on any football game this weekend, and receive $200 in free bets instantly.
It happens instantly.
You can start betting right after you make that first bet, and it is a flawlessly working app
compared to some of the others that I have tried.
And to add to the excitement, Draft Kings is giving all customers an exclusive,
no-brainer offer that you don't want to miss.
Draft Kings is giving all customers who sign up now a shot to double their money if Arizona or Minnesota scores one single point during this Sunday's football game.
That is one lousy point by either team and you double your money.
Draft Kings is safe, reliable, and secure, making it easy for you to deposit and withdraw your money at your convenience.
Thank you guys again so much for checking us out here on the PHNX D-BACs podcast.
I'm pretty sure I screwed that up to start the show, but we're rolling now.
And I am rolling because I am here with my friend and co-host, Mr. Thundrstick himself,
Jesse Friedman.
There we go, Derek.
That's the one.
Yeah, Thunderstick.
Yeah, I know.
We're getting there.
We're getting there.
We're heating up.
The nicknames are getting good.
You were up there in Seattle.
Speaking of winning this weekend, I won some money using that Draft King's Sportsbook app.
I might come join you for a game shortly.
but the D-Backs, they did some win in this weekend.
It's exciting.
It was super fun to watch.
I have to say, obviously, I've been a little deprived of live Diamondbacks
baseball being out here in Seattle.
But it was just fun to watch and not just because it's been a while
since I've seen the Diamondbacks live.
This team doesn't really look like a team in the position that they are,
at least over the weekend.
Maybe a few days ago they looked exactly like the team that they're.
are against the Rangers and they lost nine out of ten. Let's not get, let's not get two starry eyed here.
But over the weekend, it was fun to watch. The Diamondbacks, to your point earlier on our past shows, Derek,
it sort of seems like they're embracing the tank or at the very least as, you know, their
management is going to tell us, they're trying to give opportunity to their young players. And those
young players are starting to play really well. Dalton Varshow had a great series. Seth Beer,
had an incredible series starting off his his career.
It was absolutely unbelievable getting to see his first at bats.
Peer me on my,
on his first at bat, Jesse.
He gets a home run in a pinch hit situation on Friday night against Diego Castillo.
The Diamondbacks still lose,
but that pinch hit home run made it awfully close.
And just what a phenomenal way to start your career?
Like I know that sometimes it's a situation where you almost,
don't want to start off too hot like Tyler Gilbert did with with a no hitter,
you know, like where do you go from there in your career?
It's all downhill from there.
It's all downhill from there, but what an encouraging sign.
I mean, it's just exciting.
And more than anything, I think it's like, what a relief it must be for that young
man to have his first at back go like that and to kind of just be able to transition right
into his major league career.
There's a lot of things that could go on that could potentially.
you know, kind of hinder your confidence as a major league ball player when you come up from
the minor leagues. We've seen it happen. We've seen minor leaguers that were just killing it at a minor
league level, much like he was, ranked first and runs scored, tied for first and extra base hits,
second and doubles. So he has been raking in AAA. Like you would say, though, it's for AAA Reno,
so we have to kind of pump our brakes on the expectations, right? Can't get too excited about any
offensive production in Reno because again, at one point, I think Josh Rojas was hitting 900 for Reno.
So it's just an encouraging sign to see someone that has those numbers come up and find the
success he did, not just in that first game pinch hitting, but he also had just a great series.
I mean, nothing crazy, but still, I mean, we're talking about going one for three with an RBI,
a walk, and two runs scored on Saturday, and then two for four on Sunday with an RBI and a run
scored. And both of those games were wins. He contributed offensively to those wins and was a big
part of it when you when you compare him to the rest of the lineup. The thing that sticks out most to me
is just that he was comfortable. He did not look at phased by the moment. You know, it's one thing to
see a guy come up and get good results. But he just kind of looks the part of a major leaguer right
off the bat. I agree. And I think and we've seen guys get called up and look a little intimidated at times,
right, especially offensive players seeing big league pitching for the first time.
It's a new experience for them.
Seth Beer looks every part of a major league already.
So I will continue to play the caution card and say, you know, it's a couple games.
We, you know, we have to see a little more of Seth Beer before I'm ready to, you know,
claim him as the next Paul Goldschmidt, but a great start for him this weekend.
Definitely.
And I agree with you 100%.
It's a small sample size.
And that's kind of what we've got out of a lot of the players this season.
And a lot of the young players, they've played.
Sometimes they've even had success.
And then they had to go back down to the minor leagues based on roster needs or
whoever Lovolo needed to kind of call up in order to have, you know,
players to finish the series or to fill a rotation.
I just think that he and some of these other guys that showed up in Seattle really deserve
to get some more playing time.
When you talk about somebody that looks like a major leaguer,
you'd have to talk about Henry Ramos because he looks like he's been playing in the league for 20 years already.
Ramos is 29 years old and this is his debut this season. He's still a rookie technically.
And at times he's been known more for that viral video of him fighting an entire baseball team.
But I mean, he's been doing well for this team. He's hitting 286 since getting called up.
He went three for eight in the series with four RBI and two runs scored.
These are good numbers. And I mean, these are guys that are contributing.
they may not be the numbers that blow you out of the water.
You know, it's not going to,
you're not going to see these guys coming up and hitting 400 or anything
that's, I guess, like, would be newsworthy
or something that would really, like, gain a lot of attention.
It's just nice to see these young guys coming up and contributing at a level
where you could even say they're doing better than some of the players
that have been on the major league roster for years.
Well, to that point, Derek, I have to wonder,
your whole tanking idea, right?
Which I know we had someone pipe in on Twitter today that they agreed with you.
I was a little bitter.
It's tank season, baby.
You're getting people's attention, Derek.
It's not good.
But one thing I will point out is that we've sort of seen the potential negative effects of that this weekend
in that the Diamondbacks did play heavily, you know, their young players this weekend.
And they won two out of three games from a pretty good team because I'm not
convinced Derek that some of those young guys are actually going to be better than the guys that
they were replacing. So sometimes you tank a season and you actually wind up, you know,
winning more games in the end. So we'll see how this works out for them. Well, I'm with you
100% on that because what I feel like we're seeing out of some of the young players is an effort,
right? I mean, they're coming out and they're doing their best to do their best. We're probably not
seeing that out of the guys that have been on the roster all years, guys that were part of that
23 game road losing street, guys that know that this team doesn't have a chance.
It kind of, it's kind of interesting to me because as far as Arizona sports goes, right?
We saw the Arizona Cardinals have an amazing first game of the season.
And one of those players is Chandler Jones that had five sacks, just came out like a beast
and absolutely destroyed the Tennessee offensive line to the point where one of their linemen
later after the game was apologizing to people on Twitter
and thanking Chandler Jones for exposing him and how bad he is.
It was an incredible thing, right?
But what I saw there was I saw somebody that was motivated by his lack of contract.
I saw someone that was motivated by not getting what he wants,
but then trying to prove on the field that he deserves it.
You don't typically get that out of players.
Sometimes what you get is the opposite.
You get them kind of being a little bit withdrawn, maybe not giving as much of an effort,
maybe not going out there and giving 100% because they're bitter inside at the situation
or they're bitter towards the organization.
I can understand in 162 game season how baseball players that have been here the whole season
can eventually just not have that same fire in their belly, not have that same motivation,
whereas these young guys are playing for an opportunity.
I also think they're listening to Tori Lovalho, who has come on several
post game, pregame, interviews, it doesn't matter, and talked about players grabbing that brass
ring, talked about players reaching for that opportunity. I think he's been disappointed at times
by the lack of players having an opportunity and not going for it. It's not like they were going to get
all of these superstars coming out of the woodworks that were going to be so much better because
that opportunity had presented itself. But I think he was disappointed that there wasn't like a
handful of guys that really made the most out of the opportunity. You can say that about some of
these young guys that have been getting an opportunity recently that they really are trying to make
the most out of it. There's some extraordinary stories in there too. I mean, you want to talk about
Henry Ramos, like a guy who is going to make the most of this opportunity. How long is he been in
the minors? Like 10 years at this point waiting for this moment. And yeah, I mean, Henry Ramos, you know,
say what you will about him as a prospect or maybe not even much of a prospect at 29 years old coming up to the big leagues.
But you know he is going to be locked in, you know, every single moment that he is on the field.
And that's not necessarily something that, you know, to your point, as much as they're never going to admit it,
that's maybe not something that we've seen from some of the veterans on this team at times who maybe seem a little bit disengaged.
Yeah, absolutely. And yes, you're right.
He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2010.
and MLB June amateur draft.
Wow.
So, yeah, he's been around for a long time.
I mean, you could say, I've talked to minor leaguers before.
I know you have to.
And you know there are guys that kind of know they're never going to make it to a major
league level or at least have that kind of idea, maybe about themselves.
Maybe that they are just a career minor leaguer.
And to be honest, it's kind of surprising how many of them are okay with that.
how many of them are like, or have the attitude, well, at least I'm playing baseball.
At least this is, you know, what I love.
This is what I'm doing.
I'm getting paid for it.
Yeah, I'm not in the show.
Yes, I am not getting called up and that might probably isn't going to happen.
But at least I get to do this, you know, I think there's a lot of us in life that do that.
I know you and I were both doing that with this exact profession, with sports and journalism.
You know, you, you kind of at times have moments where you're trying hard to, to break out.
you start questioning if it's ever going to happen.
And then you might even accept that fact that maybe this is,
this is it for me.
Maybe this is how far I'm going to get.
And you're still okay with that.
Like Henry Ramos seems like that kind of guy that he was just happy to play in,
in the minor leagues at this point,
how long he's played there.
But to finally be given this opportunity,
you have to think that a guy like him doesn't want to give it up.
You know,
a guy like him isn't going to just go back to the minor leagues in a month.
and accept that fate.
So I love stories like that.
And I love guys that are motivated to do that.
You know, I just, I love anything in baseball that actually shows the personality of,
of guys fighting with passion to play this sport.
It's funny.
Yeah.
I mean, you, what you said totally hit home for me, just for you and me personally,
in this industry, for everyone out there listening, it is not easy to work in
sports and find a job and, you know, find stability. There was a time in my life, Derek, where I
actually wanted to be a play-by-play broadcaster. That was the dream for me in this industry for a time.
And I gave up after not very long because I realized that there are, you know, there are 30 jobs
on radio, 30 jobs on TV for all 30 teams in baseball. How am I going to, you know, win the
lottery and be one of those 60 guys? So that mindset is something that even on the
journalism side of things we absolutely have experience with. Absolutely. And you're right.
I can only imagine thinking that way about yourself as, you know, being in single A or double A.
It's one thing if you're a young kid and you have, you know, the attention of the world and
everybody kind of is gassing you up. But it's another thing when you've been doing it for 10 years
and you don't know if you're ever going to even see your debut in the show. I can't say enough about how
how how special it is for me that Ramos is at this level.
And I can only imagine what it means to him.
I mean, his career could last, you know, the next two weeks.
And he could never play a big league game again.
And I still guarantee these would be some of the greatest, you know,
two or three weeks of that man's life.
And for all of us,
just to get to watch him and watch his story unfold,
regardless of if it has any ramifications whatsoever for the future of the diamond
back's on-field product,
Henry Ramos is really an incredible story.
I couldn't agree more.
I couldn't imagine what the odds would be of him making the major leagues
after how long he has been in the minors.
But Jesse, speaking of odds, go download the Draft King Sportsbook app right now
and use code PHNX to receive $200 in free bets
when you place a $1 bet on any football game.
That's our promo code, PHNX, to get your $200 and free bets instantly this week at Drafking's Sportsbook.
Remember 21 and over only, Arizona only.
Gambling problem, call 1,800 next step.
New customers only for free bet promotion, minimum $5 deposit and $1 wager required.
Eligibility restrictions apply, max $50 wager for no-brainer offer.
One per customer, see draftkings.com slash sportsbook for details.
And yes, Jesse, it says that the $50 wager is a no-brainer offer because once again, it's if the team score one point.
It's one lousy point.
And football, you get three points for just kicking it through that thing, right?
Has there ever been a game in football that is tied zero zero?
Is that a thing?
Oh, man.
That's a great question because another one of their bets that they had on opening day for the NFL was that the Tampa Bay, the line for the Tampa Bay game was
Tampa Bay to lose by 73 or more.
So if you took the under, it was if they were going to lose by 73 points or less,
which obviously, but that's because that's the biggest blowout in NFL history is 73 points.
Obviously, we weren't going to see that.
But it's another great reason to jump on to the Draft King Sportsbook app because there's
plenty of reasonable normal bets on there that are the way that you're going to find them
and they're great and all.
And I've, I, I hit on some things I never thought I'd hit.
I hit on a parlay that had like all of these crazy, you know,
like Kyler Murray needed to throw over 250 yards,
but then the Cardinals need to win by three and then the over under needed to be
under 56.
It was like, yeah, no way this is all going to happen.
And it did.
So that was fun.
But the better thing is the ridiculous bets that they have on there that, again,
just seem like no-brainers.
It's an opportunity to go on there.
have some fun, win some money, and enjoy sports more.
I'll tell you, I know I always end this show with betting makes baseball better,
but I truly have had a really fun time this weekend.
And in some cases, it was watching blowout games that I would have had zero interest in,
even if my team is like the Cardinals killed the Tennessee Titans.
I had no reason to watch the fourth quarter of that game,
but I did because I needed them to see score under 56 points.
That's what I needed to see.
But getting back to the Diamondbacks, you know, it's an exciting time in sports.
You and I have joked about how depressing it is for us to cover them during this time.
But at the same time, too, you and I both like the young players.
We like the minor league system.
And so it is exciting.
You know, I don't think that I strongly urge people to go watch this team to still invest your time in it.
I know they're not going to win.
And I know at times it's hard to do that with a team that is 40.
six games out of first place, but it's also one of those things where, you know, you can still
see some young, exciting players, and you can still see some magic happen, you know.
I know they're not in the playoffs, though, and I want to talk about the playoffs because the MLB
playoffs this year are incredibly tight. It's been just surprises across the board. So I wanted to
play a little game with you, Jesse, this week, and ask you, uh, whose stock is going up?
and whose stock is going down.
So let's talk MLB playoffs stocks.
Who do you have as a rising stock to make the playoffs and maybe, just maybe,
get a little, have a little excitement happen?
A rising team.
Well, not the Mariners.
Obviously.
Yeah, I'm going to have to go with someone else now.
A rising team, oh, it's tough to say.
The Padres, I thought would be a rising team,
but they are really limping to the finish line right now.
lost six out of ten.
And frankly, the Reds have done the exact same thing.
So really both teams that are looking at that second wildcard spot in the NL are not
really in a good position right now.
They're kind of, they're fighting each other, but neither of them is really playing
particularly well right now.
In the American League, again, the team that's sort of on the outside looking in is
playing horrible right now.
The New York Yankees have lost eight of their last 10.
So it's kind of hard to answer that question, Derek.
It seems like the teams that are sort of a lock are the.
only teams that are really surging right now.
I guess the Toronto Blue Jays are probably the clearest answer for me.
They're sitting at 80 and 63 right now.
They are in a tie with the Red Sox for the top two spots in the AL Wildcard as we speak.
And they have won nine out of ten games.
And that is unfortunately very much due to our friend, Mr. Robbie Ray.
It feels like all roads eventually lead back to a conversation about Robbie Ray.
But.
Stop it.
But yeah, I mean, a lot of those teams are sort of limping to the finish line, oddly enough.
But one thing we do know is it is going to be very, very close and very, very entertaining to see what happens here down the stretch during these last few weeks.
Yeah, it's like you said, some of those races seem like they're so far gone, obviously.
But we still have a lot of excitement when it comes to that wild card.
and I know it's like you said man it's it's kind of interesting to see how some of these teams have faded back the Padres specifically i know that they've gone through a lot of injuries but they they really drop back and they're quickly dropping out of contention for that wildcard spot yeah they've got a shot right now they're tied with the Reds for the second spot and honestly i think the Padres will probably pull it out um but have you have you noticed the giants lately Derek
the Giants just refuse to stop winning.
It's ridiculous.
It doesn't make any sense.
It delights me to see how frustrated Dodgers fans are in regards to this because it's driving
them nuts.
And I think that's the thing is in a division that's this tough that was expected to go
automatically to the Dodgers or the Padres with the improvements that they made.
It's wild to see what San Francisco's.
was doing. I honestly, I think that's probably one of my favorite parts about baseball is the star
factor, the free agency factor, the paying someone an exorbitant fee for being a good baseball player
when good baseball players almost feel like they come up out of nowhere all the time, right?
I was looking at Milwaukee's roster the other day and some of their pitchers and the numbers
that Milwaukee's pitchers are putting up are insane. Insane. And insane. And,
to be honest, these are players that
maybe like one or two of these guys I heard of
before this season, but I am not
familiar with a lot. Like, I'm familiar with
their outfield. I'm familiar with a lot of things about
the Milwaukee Brewers. I had a feeling early
on that they were going to be a good team and
had a really good chance of taking that NL
central division. But, man,
I had no idea that they were going to blow
away the rest of their division like they
like they have.
The Brewers are insane
as far as their pitching staff goes.
Did you see Corbyn Burns?
the other day.
Yes.
He threw eight innings, 14 strikeouts, didn't allow a hit.
Craig Counsel took him out of the game, which was a very controversial move.
I think he had like 115 pitches.
Yeah.
But, but yeah, Brewers, obviously, I mean, they're clearly going to win that division at this point.
The Reds have absolutely no chance.
But speaking a little more NL West here, Derek, for Diamondbacks fans, looking for a reason to keep watching this baseball team,
the diamondbacks might not have a whole lot to play for right now,
but they as of actually in about 30 minutes as we record this show,
they're about to take on the Dodgers for a three game series.
And the Dodgers need these games.
If they want a chance to win this division,
the Diamondbacks in their minds are going to be an easy target here.
And they're going to throw, you know,
everything they have at the Diamondbacks to try to win these games.
Because they're not, I mean, they're two and a half games out of the division.
There's some separation now between them.
and the Giants.
And you know the Dodgers and all the money they've spent and all the moves they've made.
The last thing they want is to lose in a fluky one-game wildcard game to the Padres of the Reds.
We've seen that happen before.
And the Diamondbacks could really put them in that position again with a big series here these next few days.
Anything can happen in a wild card game.
I still to this day can't believe that Diamondbacks, Rocky's wildcard game in 2017, right?
I mean, what was the unscored of that, like, a lot?
11 to 7 or something like that.
Like, yeah, 11 to 8. Yeah, it was such a crazy game to watch.
Like there were times where it felt like it was over.
The next thing you know, you turned back around and it was a completely different game all, you know, all over again.
Those one games, you're absolutely right, especially a deep, complete team like the Dodgers,
they absolutely want to avoid that situation, especially against the team like the Padres that could just,
they can just be explosive out of nowhere, right?
just to have one game where they put up 15 runs and no one would blink an eye about it.
And the last thing, though, Dodgers want is to see them.
I think what you're saying, though, I definitely, I love the fact that the rest of this season,
the Diamondbacks truly have the opportunity to play spoiler.
But before we go on, I did want to just let everybody know you're listening to us here on PHNX.

Thank you guys so much for checking us out.
Thank you guys so much for checking out the debacks
and supporting them as well, right?
I mean, I know it's hard to.
I know we're,
this weird new fan base where at times it seems like, you know, you go to games and obviously
the bills at Chase Field are being paid by the opposing fans at times. I know at times it feels
just hard to be there. I speak from experience because, I mean, I'm still a fan deep down inside
and walking around that concourse at Chase Field sometimes is depressing. And it's not depressing
because of any other factor then. I'm a fan of this team. I want to see other fans of this team here.
I want that chant at the seventh inning to say, you know,
debacks instead of Padres or Cubs or whatever.
And it's honestly, like at times,
I'll say it's been heartbreaking to hear the players and Lovolo talk about that as well.
Because at times they really miss having the fan support,
especially the fan support Lovolo saw of this team in the first season back in 2017, right?
But now the reason that you can go watch this team for the rest of this season is absolutely,
Absolutely to play spoiler.
This team has almost nothing but other teams that are in contention for a
playoff spot coming up on their schedule.
They take on the Dodgers twice once here at Chase Field and once at Dodgers Stadium.
That's their playing tonight.
Then they also take on the Astros, the Braves, and then they finish,
and the Giants before finishing up the season with the Rockies.
So, you know, us and the Rockies, we'll crack some beers.
We'll have some laughs in the first last series of the year.
good time jokes you know about how bad the season went but they do have that opportunity right now
to go out there and and play spoiler against these other teams and kind of ruin someone's day right
honestly i think this is the most exciting time of the year uh for the diamond backs i mean early on
i know there was a month there of good baseball we kind of wondered if the debacks might stick
around in the race for a while remember that that week that was such a good week it was like a long long time
now. But yeah, I mean, you mentioned the schedule is, honestly, it's crazy. The number of contending
teams, you know, competing in tight windows for different spots that they have the next few weeks.
And it's going to be, you know, it's going to be Dalton Varsho. It's going to be Seth Beer.
It's going to be Josh Rojas. We're going to get a really good look here over the next few weeks
at some of these guys playing in games that really do matter. Maybe not quite as much for the
Diamondbacks right now, but matter a whole lot for the team on the other side.
Yeah, and that's when the wins really feel like they matter even in a season like this, right?
I mean, I talk about tank season all the time, and I want that more than anything else.
I really do because I just don't care.
Nobody cares.
Nobody cares if this team continues to lose.
No one's going to even be mad at it.
So that's what I'm saying is like right now the team isn't going to be thought about any differently
if they go out and win these last 20 games than if they lose.
every single one of them. The only difference there is the organization, the franchise is impacted
by them winning and in a negative way, right? Because they lose out on that number one draft pick.
I hate losing for this purpose. I think that's why even the lottery kind of deters this type of
behavior. The Diamondbacks know for a fact that if they can continue to lose and have the Orioles
just forget about it for a little while, that there's a good chance they're going to end up with
the worst record in the league. Yes, you get rewarded for that, but it also comes with a stigma
about being the worst team in the league. I don't think anybody's going to think too differently of
the D-backs if they're the second worst team or the worst team. We as fans are going to forever
write this season off as one of the worst that we've ever seen. It doesn't matter if they
surpass the 2004 team for the worst record. None of that matters at this point because I feel like
this season's story is already written despite the outcome. The only thing now that they could
potentially cost themselves is the first pick or maybe even the second pick by winning too many
games. That's where I'm conflicted. And I hate being conflicted like this. It's like you said,
at times when you look at this team, this team seems too good to have lost as many games as they have.
So that's the part where you really start to question why, why am I even rooting for winning or losing?
I think at times, like, it would be nice to see them get on the right track and kind of have this hopefully carry into next season.
But I don't know.
I'm kind of, I'm stuck.
It's still tank.
It's tank season.
No, I'm got.
Forget that.
I'm dedicated.
It's tank season, baby.
I'm taking it all back.
Well, I thought I had you convinced there for a second.
I didn't even say anything.
You almost got me.
You almost got me.
But no, I'm sticking to it.
It's tank season.
I don't know.
Like you said, it's.
It's going to be fun to watch.
All I'm saying, Derek, is in these last couple weeks, as much as I'm with you, the first overall
pick sounds nice.
More than I, more than I want the first overall pick, though, I want to see Dalton Varshow just go off.
I want to see, you know, set the beer go off.
I want to see Zach Gowan, you know, show who he can be.
This team has some pieces that could be here for a while.
And more than I want the first overall pick, I want to see those guys.
really usher in this next generation of Diamondbacks players.
So that's where I'm coming from Derek.
But hey, if the Diamondbacks get the first overall pick as part of this whole deal,
I'm not going to be mad at it.
I'm not either.
And like you said, like really, at the end of the day, there's going to be great players
available.
And who knows if the Diamondbacks and the Orioles are even going after the same guy.
Right.
So it's going to be interesting to see.
One thing I can't wait to see is what.
you brought up there, though, is it's which one of these young guys, which one of these names
continues to succeed, continues to perform at a high level, and just continues to impress
us when it comes to developing as a young player into a potential superstar. So it's
going to be fun, and I can't wait to check it out. I want to thank everybody so much for
