Starting point is 00:00:04 The wagon rolls on. The Arizona Diamondbacks win again and are in fact confirmed as a wagon, Jesse. Welcome into the PHNXD-Backs podcast. My name is Derek Montia. Of course, I am your mayor of this wagon. He is your vice mayor of the wagon, also known as Thunderstick, Jesse Friedman. They just had to do some wagon maintenance in the ninth inning. You change the oil, change the tires.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Tighten up the, tight. You don't, I don't think there's oil, but. Yeah, yeah, I don't know. This wagon has an engine. Yeah, it really does. That's what I'm trying to say. But of course, welcome in to the show. We are so thankful to have you guys here.
Starting point is 00:00:51 What a game. What a game. It wouldn't be an Arizona Diamondbacks win if it wasn't exciting in some way, Jesse. Even when we think we can count on the bullpen, things fell apart a bit tonight. It was very shaky. But thanks to a pretty substantial offensive output from this team, the Diamondbacks were able to overcome a seven run game by the St. Louis Cardinals and win 8 to 7.
Starting point is 00:01:15 Dre Jameson, it was another Drey Day, was on the mound, didn't have a chance to go very long and got himself into quite the jam there. That, you know, really weird inning. But he bent but did not break in his outing. That's kind of the theme of the night for the devax. Yeah, they've got close. in a whole lot of ways, but they did not break in this one. And yeah, an 8-3 win or an 8-7 win counts the same as an 8-3 win, right?
Starting point is 00:01:43 At the end of the day. So, yeah, Drey Jameson did not have his best stuff today. I think his command was very much not there for him. He wasn't throwing first pitch strikes. His slider was just not really there for him in this start. Obviously, that's a huge pitch for him. So when he's not able to bury the slider, get swings and misses, put that pitch where he wants to, it's really tough for him and he wasn't really able to command either of his fastball super well either.
Starting point is 00:02:10 But good Andre Jameson, right, for coming out three and two thirds innings. He didn't go that deep, 71 pitches. He's still obviously a little limited from a pitch count standpoint. But he only gave up two runs, right? He kept the diamond backs in this game and you saw that offense respond in a big way in the fourth inning, just kind of setting up this game. Gigantic game. I mean, offensively, there were.
Starting point is 00:02:34 just things all across the board. Lourdes-Guriel had a great day. He once again is trying to ensure single-handedly that I have to dye my hair like his. He went three for four with three singles. He just continues to be very good for this team. Another nice day for Evan Ligoria. Just several guys across the board.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Up until that ninth inning, the Diamondbacks offense had really kind of pummeled the Cardinals offense comparatively. But things got exciting there. in the ninth inning, the Cardinals did make it a much closer game than it was much earlier. But a lot of weird stuff in this game. Like in the second inning, the Cardinals scored a run on an overturned safe call at second base that was, I think, the first thing we complained about on our Twitter account today.
Starting point is 00:03:22 But it was basically a situation where Motter from the St. Louis Cardinals came in. It was kind of a bang, bang play where it was really close. it would appear that he may have beat out Kattel getting to the bag before him it was basically looked like right at the same time but Mauder overran the bag and then clearly wasn't on the base anymore
Starting point is 00:03:47 and Kattel tagged him and after going back and reviewing the play they called Mauder safe and that didn't make any goddamn sense at all Jesse did not make any safe why why was he safe And what world was he safe?
Starting point is 00:04:03 You over, like we heard the broadcast team discussed that they might have been reviewing to see it the run hit scored before he'd applied the tag. Because had the run crossed home plate before this tag was applied, that run would count. But they sounded fairly confident that the inning was over based on moderate over running second base. And, you know, again, even if it wasn't a force out at second, still could tell, applied the tag. And it should have been a tagged out, right? Yeah, well, I want to back up first and just say, Nick Ahmed made an eye. outstanding play on that ball. Two incredible plays, by the way.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Like right away, Nick Ahmed had like some gold glove plays. And ironically enough, I don't think either one of them were actually with his glove. I think he barehanded both of them. But yeah, Nick Ahmed looked great defensively. And yeah, to make that play, it wasn't easy play. Yeah, I mean, if that gets through, like it looked like it was going to, you know, would have scored two runs, eating, you know, obviously would have continued. Maybe it gets into the gap.
Starting point is 00:04:57 I don't know. But, yeah, you know, you have this bang, bang, play. at second base on a force out, it sure looked in the moment that Modder was safe. I was not at all surprised that that part of the play was going to be overturned. But yes, as you said, it did look like Modder overran the second base bag and Kattel was smart to keep the tag on him during that. Right. My theory is that they're not going to punish a base runner who was originally called
Starting point is 00:05:28 out for overrunning the bag. Right. Like if you're a base runner and you were and someone says the umpire says you're out at second base, right? If you overrun that base at that point, it doesn't really mean anything because you're already out. Like in your head, you're not going to be thinking about like, oh, I need to make sure I stay on the base because you were already called out. Sure. So I do, I do understand how at least in this replay universe that we live in, it wouldn't make sense. He could step off the bag and be talking to the umpire and the second baseman could casually tag him and it would just be kind of. It's kind of silly, right?
Starting point is 00:06:02 Like every time you're called out on a bang, bang, play, you would have to be very vigilant to make sure you stay on the base, even though you were called out. I don't know if you can punish players for that. I don't agree with that in this instance, because I don't know if, okay, if he was called safe, I still feel like Bonner would have overran the bag. Like, I don't know how he would have stopped himself. Yeah, that is very true.
Starting point is 00:06:22 He did not slide for no good reason at all. No, no, he just ran through it like it was first base, so I don't feel like he would, would have. That is a very valid point. There was no way with the way that he went into second base. There was no way for him to stop his momentum anyway. No, no at all. It was just weird.
Starting point is 00:06:40 But I do understand where you're coming from on that. And that actually makes a lot of sense when it comes to both the replay system and some of the rules, the pitch, clock, all this other stuff. But Diamondbacks offense really has woken up in this series. And we're going to talk about their win in game one, obviously. but today they scored six runs in the fourth inning before an out was even recorded. Lourdes-Guriel got to bat twice in the inning. He did. Yeah, he single twice.
Starting point is 00:07:09 Single twice. He was three-fice. He was three-for-five, by the way, not three for four. But just a lot of wacky stuff in this game, including Nick Ahmed golfing a two-run double that bounced off the ground. I mean, when you talk about things going to Diamondbacks way today, that was it. Because we were talking about how silly he would have. looked had he swung at this and missed because the ball as you can see here bounced a decent amount
Starting point is 00:07:37 I mean he went full cricket on this you did he absolutely went full cricket I just love this picture like I just love this picture you literally have the ball hitting the dirt probably a good I don't know like six feet or so from where Nick Ahmed's bat is and and somehow Nick Ahmed turned this into a double he should never have swung at this pitch right it was kind of an agreed just mistake on his part. Not at all. And yet, you also have to credit him
Starting point is 00:08:04 for having the mad skill that it takes to actually golf this ball into the outfield. You're right. But yeah, Nick continues to do good things for the debacks, really on both sides of the ball. I think he's had a strong start
Starting point is 00:08:16 to the season all the way around. But yeah, I've never seen this before. Have you ever seen this? Not really. Not to that success. Not to that level of success because it was such a well-hit ball after that.
Starting point is 00:08:27 It was, yeah. And I heard a rumor. I didn't check this from myself, but I saw on Twitter, some people were saying that it kind of broke like the stat cast system. Like they don't have an exit velo reading because because the ball bounces in the dirt. It's like, no, once the ball bounces in the dirt, we don't, we don't check for that anymore. Yeah, we don't. So that shouldn't register. Speaking of guys having a good season, Lourdes Correel, again, that we talked about him. Uh, his average is now at 279, uh, with an on base percentage of 297 and an OPS of 723.
Starting point is 00:08:57 Thunder in the comment says the Varschio deal looks pretty good right now, and you aren't wrong because the other side of that is actually our Kingsnake, which is the one and only, yo Gabby Gabby, Gabrielle Moreno, going two for three today with a home run, three RBI, and a walk, his first home run of the season. And man, I mean, if this guy continues to put it together, like he's put it together recently, I think that we're going to be okay without Carson Kelly for a little while.
Starting point is 00:09:27 Yeah, I like what I've seen from Gabby Moreno at the plate overall. I know it hasn't looked great for him in certain moments. He's gotten into four double plays, I believe. He's had some not great moments at the plate for sure. He's not very patient at the plate. He feels like he can hit everything, including balls like the one that Nick just hit. And I think that that will, I think you'll start to see him show a little bit more discipline at the plate over time. If you look at his numbers and the minors, he walked a pretty decent amount.
Starting point is 00:09:55 So, you know, first few moments here in the big leagues. I know he had a cup of coffee in the majors last year with the Blue Jays, but, you know, he still doesn't have 200 of bats in the big leagues. He's still getting new to this thing. We've seen something somewhat similar with Corbyn Carroll, where he's kind of been swinging a lot, right, not taking a whole lot of walks. I think over time you'll start to see those things. But Moreno's quality of contact has been pretty decent throughout the season up until today,
Starting point is 00:10:22 despite what the numbers have said up to this point. And after today, you know, you're starting to see those numbers come up. So good to see him knockout as his first career home run with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The offense today really did carry the load pitching, had a lot of pressure put on it. And again, it bent pretty significantly, but it did not break. Corby and Carroll was scratched from the lineup, and you said that that ended up not being anything. Yeah, yeah, this was, yeah, apparently the Dback social media team, just they, they, just come up with the lineup card every day.
Starting point is 00:10:54 And then I guess Tori Lavello either says that they did it right or he says they did it wrong. Basically what happened is I don't know where they got this lineup from Derek, but apparently the lineup that they released on Twitter today was not the actual Diamondbacks lineup. Tori said that that was never an official lineup that they tweeted out. So what appeared as Corbyn Carroll being scratched was actually Corbyn Carroll never, he was never supposed to be in the lineup to begin with. So no injury, nothing happening on that front. Thunder says Marino's arm has been great.
Starting point is 00:11:26 It really has. He's just been a force back there. Do not run on Gabby Marino. But on the mound, the Diamondbacks definitely had a lot go wrong for them today, even though they were able to get the win. Drey Jameson goes three and two thirds inning, three hits, two earn runs, two runs total, four walks, three strikeouts, got to seven. 71 pitches in those three and two-thirds innings, which was just too much.
Starting point is 00:11:55 And even though he was able to get himself out of some of the jams he did get himself into, he just didn't have his best stuff today. He did not. But the Diamondbacks have now played nine games over the last two years that Dre Jameson is pitched in, and they have won eight of them. They're eight and one over the last two years in games that Dre Jameson has pitched in. So they, yeah, I guess the only reason of all. two-thirds of an inning every single game.
Starting point is 00:12:21 He, I mean, he has had a knack for, even on days where he hasn't had his best stuff for limiting the damage, right? And you certainly saw that again today. His ERA is still 2.25, even though those peripherals definitely took a hit today and don't necessarily look great. I think he's given up three home runs on the season now in about 12 innings. So you definitely want to see him pitch better, you know, next time out. But I think in a lot of ways, it says, like,
Starting point is 00:12:48 a lot about a pitcher. What do they do? How do they handle it when they don't have their best stuff? Because those days happened to every single pitcher in the league. And Drey Jamison hasn't had many of those days. He's really had pretty good stuff just about every time out. Today he had to fight through that. And I think he did it reasonably well.
Starting point is 00:13:06 However, the Diamondbacks had to use seven pitchers today. Not good. This is true. They got Madison Bumgarner starting tomorrow. Not great. Peter Solomon is going to be on speed dial. Peter Solomon, you're getting the call. And guess what?
Starting point is 00:13:21 You're pitching three innings regardless of how well you do. But, yeah, Drey Jameson, Kyle Nelson, who was very good in this game. Kevin Ginkle, everybody else kind of struggled. Joe Mantiply return. Scott McGuff actually did pretty damn well. He went one in a third innings, struck out two, no hits, no runs. So that was good. The bad, Andrew Chafin, not very good after being used yesterday.
Starting point is 00:13:48 Jesse immediately said, I don't like this when Andrew Chafin get a game into the game. It was just weird. I mean, the D-backs have, I know they haven't named a closer, so in no way am I saying like, oh, Andrew Chafin's the closer, this is a non-save situation. I'm not really thinking in that way. But it really wasn't, and it's ironic to say this with how the game turned out, but it really wasn't a close game. It was not a close game.
Starting point is 00:14:10 Why would you put him in there, especially after he pitched yesterday? After he pitched yesterday, yeah. I mean, I guess the D-backs were just kind of shorthand. They'd already used, as you said, they'd already use Nelson, Ginkle, Mani, McGuff. So they didn't have that many options. They probably didn't want to use Peter Solomon in this game. But they did have to use Miguel Castro again. That's another guy that they had two days in a row.
Starting point is 00:14:31 So tomorrow's going to be a little tough because you're not going to have either Chafin or Castro most likely. So tomorrow you need Madbun to come out or Peter Solomon to come out and really give you some length in that game potentially because the debacks are going to be short-handed in the bullpen. But yeah, it was an ugly game all the way around for the bullpen, Derek. Andrew Chafin, not throwing strikes. There was a violation, his first pitch after coming out. I think that might have frazzled him a little bit. But this is the first time that we've seen Andrew Chafin give up runs of his own this year. And you knew that was going to happen eventually, but he really was pretty all over the place in this one.
Starting point is 00:15:13 The Diamondbacks bullpen looks a bit better with Manseapply in the mix. And of course, when we talk about some of the names that we've seen so far that we can trust, nobody's flawless, right? Like, Andrew Chaffin was probably the most trusted arm in the bullpen. And tonight, he was probably the worst of the relief pitchers that came in in this game, at least as far as the results go, right? But now you have Joe Mantyply, Kyle Nelson, Andrew Chaffin, Miguel Castro. Those four fairly solid at the top of the pen, right?
Starting point is 00:15:44 I mean, fairly reliable guys that I feel like will be great options for Tori Lovelo. Yeah. However, if he doesn't get support from the other end of the bullpen, Kevin Ginkle, Scott McGuff, Ruiz for now and Peter Solomon, that is going to put a lot of stress on those guys kind of like what we saw tonight over the last two days, right? Yeah, yeah, it is a little shaky after those guys. And of course, I wrote about earlier today how, you know, how great the Debex higher leverage relievers have been this. season and then of course Andrew Chafin goes out and you know that just felt like it was inevitable when you want to know
Starting point is 00:16:20 the reason why you can fully blame me for that but the D-backs still got the win so it could have it could have ended worse for me but yeah there has been this enormous disparity this year between how their higher leverage relievers have pitched and how those other guys
Starting point is 00:16:36 have pitched the guys who have come in in the not as important situations and the D-backs have had some games where they've had huge leads and it hasn't really mattered if Jose Ruiz comes in and gives up a home run, right? Or if Peter Solomon comes in and struggles. They've been able to weather that storm so far and it not really affect the outcomes of these games. That's not going to be the case for the whole year.
Starting point is 00:16:58 Eventually, you're going to get to the point where you need Kevin Ginkle to give you, you know, a big inning late in a game, an inning that really matters or one of those other guys that I mentioned. You can't just be Castro and Chafin every single night, right? Like tomorrow, DBAX, they can't go to those guys. So, yeah, there's certainly a lot of room for some of those other arms to come in and prove themselves. We haven't really seen that happen yet. Still also some room for some young guys to get an opportunity should those arms not perform for the Diamond Bag. So yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:29 Justin, I will say Justin Martinez, his numbers in AAA, they ain't great, Derek. They are, he is walking more than a batter an inning and it has been not great. We don't want to look at the AAA numbers too much or the double A. Like there's not a lot of good numbers right now going on. Yeah. Jordan Lawler is doing well, right? Yeah, he is. That's one thing we'll hang our hat on.

We're not really here to talk about the Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:21:17 We're here to talk about the fact that Derek Montia is four wins away from doing what? What was it again? What did you say you were going to do? I am going to dye my hair like Lord of Scorial, like that right there. Hey, there he is. That's perfect.
Starting point is 00:21:32 Just like that. Let me match it up a little. Let me. Oh, oh, I'm elusive. I'm elusive. So there we go. All right, we're just going to do the rest of the show like this just as a preview now for what, what's to come inevitably. I can't wait for when you look like that.
Starting point is 00:21:47 Enough of these hats, Derek. Yeah. Well, what's funny is I have a friend's bachelor party next month in Las Vegas. Oh, that's even better. So there's going to be good times to be had with that hair. Let me tell you. But the downbacks win another series, Jesse. And with the winning game two, game one was kind of more of the same.
Starting point is 00:22:07 actually it was a little less nerve-wracking. It was a little bit more in control. Starting pitching much. It was just boring compared to this game. No excitement. No excitement. This show is officially sponsored by my purple hair now. Meryl Kelly was outstanding. And I mean, it's again, much like Zach Gallen,
Starting point is 00:22:25 I reserve judgment until we can see him do it a few games like Zach Gallen has done. Yeah. But man, to think of this one-two punch of Gallen and Merrill Kelly both pitching like this, that's very, very good for business. Jesse. Merrill Kelly's line, six innings pitched, five hits, one earn run, zero walks, three strikeouts. Yeah, he was great. He was really great in that game. I mean, just kept that Cardinals offense, just absolutely quiet throughout the game. It didn't hurt that Paul Goldschmidt was out of the lineup yesterday for Cardinals. And Nolan Aronado was out of the lineup today. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:58 He did pinch it. He did pinch it. Yes, he did pinch it. Yes, he did pinch it. He gave us a little scare and that was not great. But Goldschmidt did a home run in tonight's game though right away. This is true. First at bat because of course but uh yeah I just want to get to a point where he can't hurt us anymore jesse. Offensively the diamondbacks were tight yesterday two for two with runners in scoring position took advantage of those opportunities. You tell marty was two for four with a home run and two rbi so it was great to see marty uh you know kind of getting back on track this this team just keeps popping like in different ways right like you keep seeing little little ways that they're getting back on track and like they're just it's not all at once but they're still finding a way
Starting point is 00:23:41 to win right so like the encouraging part is that they still have a lot of flaws and that there's a lot that they can improve on that would allow them to be even better than they are it is very true yeah it feels like a lot of their hitters got off to slow starts and you're kind of seeing slowly but surely some of those guys start to kind of recover from that yeah um so yeah i could tell how to had a nice game yesterday with the home run, a couple of RBIs in that one. The biggest story of yesterday's game, of course, was Pavin Smith, right? Palm Beach Garden Zone, as Derek likes to say. A grand slam, the first grand slam of Pavin Smith's career.
Starting point is 00:24:20 We were literally asked in our Mailbag Monday show, like, is Pavan Smith for real? Like, is this actually going to keep happening? I said, Jesse doubted him. I know. I said he's been good. Like, it was legit. His first few games where he was good. He was genuinely crushing the ball, and he sure crushed the ball yesterday, and I believe it was the seventh inning.
Starting point is 00:24:41 At the right time. At the right time. Yeah. It's just, the offense has just been on fire in this series. And again, it's very encouraging that they're getting the, you know, the output from different sources. Gabriel Moreno getting his first home run today, Pave and Smith's Grand Slam yesterday. Marte, with the dinger. There's just.
Starting point is 00:25:00 There's so many guys that can beat you, right? Yeah. Well, what we've talked about is the biggest thing the debacks have going for them is just the depth of their offense. Right. That you can have Guriel beat you. You can have Cotel beat you. You can have, you know, Corbyn Carroll, obviously Christian Walker, 36 homers last year. And of course, there's all this speed up and down the lineup as well.
Starting point is 00:25:21 There's a lot of different ways that this team can beat you, a lot of different guys who can come out and have big games. And if Pavin Smith is another addition to that, it's like, Like, man, there's kind of a lot of hitters on this team that you start to feel pretty good about. I'm going to blow your mind a bit, Jesse. Okay. There are three hitters in today's lineup hitting above 300. Nick Ahmed at 316. Okay.
Starting point is 00:25:46 Yep. Everyone expected that he would be one of them. Evan LaGoria at 303. And Josh freaking Rojas hitting 352. What? He's had a heck of a. a season. Josh, Josh Roas has been, he has been hands down the Diamondback's most consistent offensive producer this season and maybe even defensive producer. Josh Rojas, we talked about it
Starting point is 00:26:13 the other day. He's playing a very, very good third base. He is very well on track to have maybe the best season of his career if he's able to keep up what he's done so far. I don't know he's getting at 352 for the whole season, but you really like what you've seen from Rojas this year. 360. There you go, right. That's an underestimate. I never thought. I mean, I honestly didn't think that we would see Rojas DH. Right? Like, it's not to say we didn't think we'd see
Starting point is 00:26:39 him ever DH, but I just didn't think this early in the season with the other options that Tori Lavello has that we would see Josh Rojas, you know, deaching, but he deserves it, to be honest. He absolutely deserves it. And it's just a really incredible turnaround for this team that the offense was slow.
Starting point is 00:26:55 We thought we might see another slow start like we saw last April. Yeah, April was a slog for this offense, at least the first couple weeks there, yeah. Now the offense is on fire. And I guess the only question is, are you jealous of the D-BAC's long balls? Wow. Do you need help getting your offense back on track? Oh, gosh, here we go.
Starting point is 00:27:21 Are you having a hard time scoring on sack flies? You know what I mean. Roman is here to help. Roman is the digital health clinic for men addressing a variety of sales. sexual health needs and offering genuine medication that helps achieve and maintain a strong erection. Roman offers discreet wipes that help you
Starting point is 00:27:37 last four times longer in bed much like tonight's game. We're really doing over three hour games again? I thought we were past that. Yeah, this wasn't over three hour baseball game. I don't like that, Jesse. I don't like that, but I'll tell you what who does long nights like that
Starting point is 00:27:53 your partner and give your partner a long night with Roman and their discrete wipes. No waiting room, no hassle, straightforward digital experience from the comfort of your home. If medication or testing is appropriate, Roman will send it directly right to your door like Tony Peres Chica giving them the green light. You know what I mean? Starting point is 00:28:17 achieve your personal sexual health goals. Go to RO.co slash PHNX to get 20% off your entire first order. That's R.O.c.co slash P.NX. And if you want more from me I have no more for you When it comes to that ad read But I do have more furniture Jesse
Starting point is 00:28:34 I knew I knew that's for you Anytime Derek drops the word more And he kind of emphasizes Like he kind of drags out the R sound a little bit It's like it's not war It's a war right like you got to emphasize it differently It's a different name and this is more More furniture
Starting point is 00:28:51 Where you can absolutely get the best furniture in the valley I love the fact that They have these reclining couches that have all of these secret cubby holes for like your cell phone to charge in and stuff. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Wireless chargers now on the on the couch where you just set your phone down on a thing and then it's just charge them. It's great. I'm just trying to picture like our sun's crews, you know, has been out there watching the sun's game on our more furniture recliners here in the office.
Starting point is 00:29:18 They were pretty angry at some different points there, Derek. And that was while they were sunken in the just lovely hug-like chair. been, but kind of having little tantrums over, you know, Devin Booker not boxing out and CP3's offense. How much worse would those tantrums have been if they weren't sitting in the more furniture chairs? Oh, man. At least they respect the furniture. They respect the furniture because it's so damn comfortable. So you get furniture you respect over at morefurniture.com.
Starting point is 00:29:48 And of course, when people deliver it with the white gloves, again, that makes you feel bad about kicking it during a basketball game. So have the white glove delivery service that way you'll treat your furniture better. And you can say big on the best furniture in the valley when you head to more furniture.com. Jesse, Diamondbacks way on top on the NL West. What the hell is going on with everybody else? Because I was noticing. Just as everyone I suspected, Derek. Everyone knew that the NL West was terrible.
Starting point is 00:30:16 Meanwhile, the Padres didn't have a chance. The Dodgers didn't have a chance. The NOS is just a crapshoot. The Diamondbacks would be in third place in the NL Central right now. Meanwhile, right? Because that division is going wild. Pirates. Pirates are a juggernaut.
Starting point is 00:30:30 We all like we all mean. Andrew McCutcheon returns home and there you go. But yeah, not not a great start for the N.L. West, which is very good for the Arizona Diamondbacks. San Francisco Giants just kind of flat out bad. Their bullpen had a 5.82 ERA heading into today's games. Yeah. Not very good.
Starting point is 00:30:49 Their pitching has been awful all across the board. Yeah. Yeah. The Giants have not been the team that a lot of people expected them to be, which is not necessarily. Of course they're not. Yeah, right, right. No, I mean, I don't think people expected the Giants to win, you know, 90 games or anything. But there were like actual projection systems that, you know, had the Giants like an 85, 88 win team, something in that range.
Starting point is 00:31:15 Yeah. I don't think they've been as bad as their record would suggest. They're kind of middle of the road offensively and middle of the road from a run prevent. standpoint if you look at the numbers. But yeah, their bullpen has been a big issue for them. Their bullpen ERA almost six entering today. And that's kept them from, you know, a lot of those 50-50 games haven't gone their way. Even though they've basically scored the same number of runs as their opponents, they haven't
Starting point is 00:31:40 been able to turn that many of those games into wins. I love the fact that the Padres are struggling. It's been rough. It's not great that Xander Bogart's the new edition has been the really good part of the team. They'd be completely lost without him. That bothers me. It really bothers me because they were so close to like, or like they fucking pulled him out of nowhere, right?
Starting point is 00:31:58 So it was like, man, without him, they would be really bad. But unfortunately, they're getting someone that's been very, very good back just in time for their series with the debacks. And that's Fernando Tatis Jr. Who's just been hitting the goddamn cover off the ball in AAA. Yeah, I think it was like six home runs and tenet bats or something at one point. It's just absolutely ridiculous production from Fernando Tatis. I hate the fact that the only reason why he's able to come back right now is because the Padres went so deep into the playoffs. I hate that. That's the only reason why his suspension is lifted early. A lot of people have been angry about the fact that he is allowed to participate in AAA games even like while he's serving his suspension. Like the suspension keeps him from Bigley games. It doesn't keep him from AAA games. I do understand that. I mean, it is like I mean, you could you could make a case that, you know, starting the year with a couple weeks in AAA to. you know, hit 14 homers or something in two weeks.
Starting point is 00:32:54 It's not necessarily the worst way to start your season, right? You go from there to the big leagues. Obviously, he's going to have to adjust to what big league pitching looks like again. But, yeah, I mean, I don't know if this suspension has necessarily affected him that much. It's obviously kept him away from being able to impact games for the Padres. But this weekend's going to be big with Tatis coming back. I believe it's the 21st, I want to say. I think it's the Friday game, not the Thursday game, if I'm not mistaken.
Starting point is 00:33:21 But we will see Fernando Tatis playing games this weekend for the Padres. And they desperately need him right now because somehow Derek Juan Soto has just not figured out how to hit as a member of the Padres. Hitting 164-34-34-361. He always draws his walks. But man, he's just not impacting the baseball the same way he did in D.C. Let's just hope it continues. At least let's hope it continues until the end of the month. If he's going to figure it out, figure it out in May, and then we don't play the Padres again until August.
Starting point is 00:33:55 So, I mean, I don't want them to get on a tear when we're not playing them either, but it would be way better if he continued to struggle. Much like Michael Waka and Nick Martinez have struggled against everybody. Yeah, the Padres rotation has not been that good. Waka and Martinez both have ERAs over five. The other three guys have kind of held things down. The top of their rotation's been all right. They do have some injuries that have crept up. Like Snell is missed time for them.
Starting point is 00:34:21 But yeah, that was kind of a weakness that we pinpointed heading into the season for the Padres. The rotation wasn't that good. And they've had to dig into their depth a little bit. Joe Musgrove has also been out. But it hasn't really worked for them. Waka and Martinez had both really struggled. Speaking of pitching, struggling, that's kind of the story of the Dodgers season so far. Struggling starting pitching, struggling relief pitching.
Starting point is 00:34:46 And their offense hasn't really been great either. But most of them. Their offense has been all right because James Outman has been like the best player in the National League so far. I don't understand. It just felt inevitable after. He really should be a pitcher with the name like Outman. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:02 Yeah. Well, he shouldn't be a pitcher with numbers that he's putting up right now offensively, Derek. I don't think they're about to do that. But yeah, Noah Senior Guard has just not been good for the Dodgers. He's got an ERA over five. Michael Grove is in their rotation to start the year. He has an ERA of nine and three starts.
Starting point is 00:35:19 The other guys in their rotation have been good. Dustin May, Julio Eurias, Clayton Kershaw, all those guys have been fine. Yeah, Dustin May did get, I think the Mets got to Dustin May a little bit last night. But overall, their rotation's been all right, with the exception of those two last guys. Their bullpen hasn't been very good either. That's also been an issue for the Dodgers. Their team ERA right now combining starters and relievers is 4.41. Seems like the Dodgers are always in the low, maybe mid-threes at worst
Starting point is 00:35:52 from what we've seen in the last few years. So their pitching staff has really taken a step back. And then I guess we have the Rockies. Yeah, I mean, do you want to talk about why the Rockies aren't good? No, no. I don't think we should waste the people's time with that. They're just the Rockies. That's good enough.
Starting point is 00:36:13 We said that the D-Backs were a wagon, right? You guys know that. The D-Backs are a wagon. That's what the sign says. Don't make me tap the sign again. That's the sign, the devax or a wagon. Our friends from the DNVR Rockies crew, they wanted to know what word they could make that would sum up the Rockies with their CR logo.
Starting point is 00:36:31 And I tried to do scrappy, but the S got cut off. Oh, is that what happened? That's what happened, Jesse. I was cropping on Photoshop, but sometimes it's just all over the place. So it ended up saying crappy. which by definition, I mean, I know, I know there's going to, I know Ruth is going to think I'm being crass on that. But the actual definition of crappy is of extremely poor quality. And based on the fact that they have seven position players with a negative war, I think that that's an accurate definition of that team right now.
Starting point is 00:37:08 Yeah, I mean, Elias Diaz is knocking the cover off the ball, throwing out all the base runners from behind the dish for the Rockies, Chris Bryant's. been okay. But the rest of that team has really struggled out of the gate. I think Kyle Freeland has had some good starts on the pitching side. Hermann Marquez had a bit of an injury scare the other day. I think he's going to be okay. But the rest of that rotation, man, is just, it's just brutal. Jose Urania, honestly, maybe not really a majorly quality starter at this point. And pitching in course field, I don't think does many favors. Austin Gomber is also in there. or a guy that most people probably haven't heard of has also been a member of the Rockies rotation this year.
Starting point is 00:37:51 So yeah, this is the one team out of the list that they're struggling and we are not at all surprised. The Colorado Rockies did not look like a good team coming into this season and they have not been that so far. No. Ryan asked, how is the All City standings? I promise we will give you an update on the All City Standings. Derek's just afraid to because the Cubs are a little too good right now.
Starting point is 00:38:12 So. I don't know if I can deal with that. But the White Sox and the Rocky is not good. Yeah, we feel confident about that. So we'll bring that back for tomorrow's post-series show because we have a 1015 a.m. start. So breakfast with the Arizona Diamondbacks and your guys over here, maybe lunch, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:38:30 We'll be here probably around hopefully 1230, but the way this fucking baseball game knows, who knows? Maybe 2 o'clock is when we'll be seeing you. Looking at the probable pitchers, we have Madison Bumgarner on the mound for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Woodford on the mound for the Cardinals Take the over in this one
Starting point is 00:38:48 That's my big suggestion Based especially on the Diamondbacks Bullpen being taxed I'm not going to say That the Diamondbacks are sure thing To sweep this game with how taxed they are And to be honest It might be a good game to just let Bumgarner
Starting point is 00:39:02 Stay out there and figure things out for a while Even if he does end up struggling Yeah the D-backs might That's a great point They really might go to Bumgarner and say like You're pitching a hundred pitches You might have to give us a little more length than you'd want to. Although Tori Lavello was apologetic for having Madbum throw too many pitches in his second start,
Starting point is 00:39:23 I do think the Debecks are a little wary of pushing him too far. So be interesting to see what happens there. Jake Woodford on the mound for the Cardinals, he's given up 20 hits and 14 in the third innings this year, posing teams batting 345 off of him. Last year he was a reliever, primarily a reliever for the Cardinals. had a 223 ERA. So he put up some decent numbers there.
Starting point is 00:39:46 But he's always been kind of a pitch to contact sort of a guy only has 101 strikeouts in over 150 innings in his career. So another guy, you feel like you can jump on a little bit tomorrow if you're the D-backs and a rightie on the mound, which I think is also a welcome change for them. Today was one of the first days we've seen the debacks have some success against a left-handed starter. Tomorrow you'll see a rightie back on the man.
Starting point is 00:40:11 for the Cardinals. The due backs do get a sweep. That means just three more games till purple hair Derek makes an appearance. The Diamondbacks have four games. More wins, more wins. What did I say? Games. I think you said games.
Starting point is 00:40:22 Oh, yeah. Yeah. They have to win. Three more wins. Three more after tomorrow, assuming they win tomorrow. We are assuming they're winning tomorrow. But four wins total for the rest of the month. They have four games against the Padres.
Starting point is 00:40:35 Three against the Kansas City Royals. And then three to close out the month against the Rocky. So we talked about two of those teams not being very good so far. Plenty of opportunities for the Diamondbacks to make me eat my words about them not having a winning record after the first month. And I'm happy to have doubted them. If I can be bulletin board material for them to have a look at that guy. I mean, I think he's cute. I think he looks cute.
Starting point is 00:41:00 Pretty soon we're going to have to talk about what you're going to do if they go over 500 in May. We're going to have a whole other thing set up. By the end of the season, you're just going to look ridiculous. It's good. absurd. It just looks like a circus clown after everything. It's the hair in April. It's the beard in May.
Starting point is 00:41:18 Oh, no. No, I can't with my beard. It's the big shoes in June. Clown nose. Clown knows after May. Every episode. But I'll tell you, tomorrow's game is a great time for awake and bake with our friends from OGs.
Starting point is 00:41:33 Get some OGs, edibles. Get up early. Clear your schedule. You know, play hooky from work or whatever you have to do. Have some OGs, watch some baseball. And it was great because we were there for a very, very long time. And I can't do shows that are five, six hours anymore, Jesse.
Starting point is 00:42:17 My legs, my feet, my body, they can't take that. I'm too old for that. But thanks to OGs, they all had me feeling good. And they had me relaxed and taken care of myself by sitting on big comfy couches. So shout out to OGs. And shout out to everybody that stopped by our booth. We got sold a lot of shirts, which was just great to see so many people interested in our wonderful shirts, especially this shirt, which was just brum.
