Well, we are firing up the trade machine today.
And of course, we're getting opinions from all over the place.
Baseball is broke.
Get out of here, Craig.
Get out of here.
You'll go cover your own broken sport.
Well, it is.
He's not wrong.
But we got more on how the Diamondbacks could make some moves that make this team better in 2025 and beyond.
But at what cost?
Don't go anywhere.
We'll be live in 30 seconds.
To go into another edition of the PHNX devax podcast right here on PHNX.
My name is Derek Montia.
occasionally know as your mayor, PHNX is my vice mayor and your thunderstick, Jesse Friedman.
And Jesse, let me tell you, I sent out a tweet today that I very much meant.
And that tweet was, if the Diamondbacks don't make some sort of move today, I'm going to call the police.
I don't know what they'll do, if anything.
But I feel like I should get the authorities or FBI involved somebody to investigate what exactly is going on.
We know the Diamondbacks are being much more patient than I am being, right?
And we know for good reason they could end up on top here.
And in a lot of these situations, especially when it comes to Christian Walker.
However, as I say that, Jesse, we actually have breaking news about the Diamondbacks signing someone.
Am I right?
Let's go.
What do we got going on?
Yeah, you spoke it into existence, Derek.
I did.
It happened.
It happened right now.
on your part. I feel like this maybe isn't the type of move that you were envisioning.
No, but you were maybe hoping for. Let's get it on. Let's come on. What do we got?
The Diamondbacks have agreed to a minor league contract with one Ealdemarro Vargas,
who is a familiar name around here. Ealdemar Vargas was a member of the Diamondbacks
for for quite some time on two separate occasions from 2015 through 2020.
And then again in 2021, the Diamondbacks acquired Vargas via trade.
And he's back, Derek.
And we now know it is not just Sergio Alcantara, who is a favorite utility player
among the Diamondbacks front office people right now.
It is also Ildemara Vargas, who is back for a third time.
Yeah, not the kind of move I was looking for them to make.
But welcome back, Ildemar Vargas.
And again, Mike Hazen can't quit you.
Find someone that looks at you the way that Mike Hazen looks at Ildemarovar Vargas.
And Sergio Alcichael.
You're doing that right about that.
It does make sense though.
I mean, the Diamondbacks, we've talked about it, right?
Like they don't have a ton of middle infield depth right now, really just infield depth
in general.
It's true.
So this is the kind of move that they definitely needed to make.
Vargas actually played quite a bit in the majors in 2024.
He played 97 games.
games for the Washington Nationals was basically like a full-time player for them,
had around 300 played appearances, a 611 OPS, one homer 30 RBI.
But, you know, he's a solid, solid defender can hit, can hit lefties, even if you don't
really want him taking a bats against right east.
He's someone who can step up and fill in if you need him to the kind of player that the
diamondbacks need, even though, yeah, he's not exactly the headliner that some people are
looking forward to.
Elizabeth says we did it every one time for the rest of the league to pack it up.
We got this.
She's not wrong.
Brian says print the world series tickets, friends.
Vargas, he brings back team friendship.
Andrew says, watch out.
League team friendship is back.
No, you know who could bring team friendship back, though.
That could be Christian Walker, Jesse.
And Jim Bowden in a story today suggested that the debacks re-sign Christian Walker.
However, with a caveat because Jim Bowden said it will take.
It will probably take four years and $100 million to land Walker, who will turn 34 in March, Aegis.
Now, what are we doing here?
Are we giving Christian Walker four years and $100 million?
Obviously, we know that the Diamondbacks were prepared to offer him this year.
Basically, $22 million, right?
I mean, that's kind of the cost of Christian Walker.
So, 25 million per year on an, you know, when you talk about AAV,
isn't much more than they were willing to offer them for or offer them in the qualifying offer.
But then you have Christian Walker for four years at $100 million.
Is that something that you guys in the chat would want to do?
Because that seems when you put it that way, like a lot of money for a guy who's going to be 38 years old in that final year of his contract.
It is.
That is a heavy investment, a hefty investment for Christian Walker, four years, $100 million.
I don't know if I don't know if this is ultimately where Walker's market is is really going to land
But this is what Jim Bowden said when he wrote today and it was in the context of arguing that the diamond back should
Resign him. It was a story of like seven moves that would be contenders should be these would be contenders should make something along those lines and for the diamond backs the suggestion was to resign Christian Walker
And that is where Jim Bowden said that he thinks it will take four years and a hundred million dollars to get
get this done. A lot of money. That's a lot of time. Yeah, that is a lot. I don't think that it will
take this much. But, you know, if Bowden is floating this out there, you know, maybe, maybe there is
something to this. And I think we also should be realistic about the fact that basically everyone
who has signed up to this point has signed for well above what we expected them to, right? And
realistically, there's no reason to think that wouldn't apply to Christian Walker as well.
If we were thinking it was going to be 3 and 60 around there at the beginning of the off season,
it feels like it's going to be more than that to get it done.
Whether that actually stretches it out to 4 and 100, though, that still feels like a lot to me.
Ryan says just defer the rest of the contract.
Everyone else is doing it.
I would love to see some deferrals.
Let's start getting ourselves into debt in the future because why not?
Yeah, I mean, I don't think it's out of the question that there could be some deferrals.
But again, like if you defer a contract, you have to start funding that money within, you know, around the, around the time that you would normally be paying that money out.
It's not like the Dodgers are deferring money to 2035 and not actually setting aside any of that money in 2035.
So, you know, deferrals, it does lower the present day value of the deal.
It allows you to literally give someone more money.
But, you know, it sort of feels like it's less than that because.
because of how much time elapses until they get that money.
But I don't think the debaques,
I don't think deferrals are going to be like a huge factor in the diamond bags bringing
Walker back.
They could structure it in a way where it's not necessarily $25 million per year,
where maybe this year he gets a little less and then going forward.
Sure.
It's more, you know, it could be backloaded to the final three years just to help them out
with financial flexibility this offseason.
I also think that it's weird, but Groundhog Mama's kind of.
kind of right. She says, I'd do three years, 75 million, right? And like, that's no different.
It's just one less year at one, at the exact same AAV off for that year. Yet it does feel like
three years, 75 million is a little bit more feasible, maybe a little bit more easy to swallow for
a franchise that doesn't necessarily have the money these other franchises do. I don't know. I mean,
there's, there is something to be said about if you maybe start talking about Christian Walker at four years,
90 million now we're now we're talking you know and again these are all like it feels like you're
splitting hairs with some of this stuff the big the big thing is is it feels like at three year 75
that's the most i would want to go and that's might be the most the diamondbacks are willing to go
i don't really know what's going to happen here but i mean i agree with him in the in the idea that
signing christian walker should be the diamond backs priority and they really should be
attempting to do everything they can to bring him back however it
It sucks when you start getting into a point where a single player is potentially causing your franchise, you know, problems to make other moves, to continue to improve the team.
And that's what Christian Walker's contract could essentially be, especially if he starts to decline.
If he starts to, you know, I mean, we didn't see him put up the greatest numbers this year, although he was on pace to have a really good season at one point until he got injured.
But I mean, again, it's it's about staying healthy and it's about his ability to continue to be productive in, I guess, later years of his career.
Again, he's going to be theoretically on this four-year deal.
He would be 38 in the final year of his season.
Yeah, it'd be like his age 37 season.
But, yeah, yeah, he would, you would just, it would just be through age 37.
Well, wouldn't he be, he's turning 34 before 2025.
Right, right, right.
Yeah, he'll turn 30.
34 in March. Yeah. So, so next year will be his age 34 season and then age 35, age 36. So that would be a
three year deal takes it through age 36. A four year deal would go through age 37. But we're also sitting here
talking about signing a 39 year old Carlos Santana or what, like a 37 year old Paul Golchman, right?
Right. So it's not like. But those are like one year one year deals most likely. Right.
I think my point being is that it's, I guess a part of the reason not to do a four year deal is to think that he's not
going to be as productive at that age of 37, but we are talking about signing guys that are
that age and older right now to replace him. That is, that's a totally fair point. And maybe that is
what it ultimately takes to get Christian Walker. Maybe it is a matter of giving him that fourth year,
even without the dollar figure going up that much higher. Like when the Yankees gave Max Fried
8 and 218, I think part of the calculus there was we would rather give this dollar value over more
years. That's something that we're seeing a lot in baseball right now. And it applies more so to the teams
that are trying to stay under the competitive under the tax threshold. Because if you're able to
lower the AV, then it lowers the CBT hit. So it certainly makes sense for those teams. But even for
a team like the Diamondbacks that isn't so concerned about any of the tax thresholds, I think it also
could make sense for them. The reality, at least what we think we're looking at this offseason is
a team that only has about $30 million of wiggle room, right?
And so if you're talking about on an AAV basis,
giving 25 million of that to Christian Walker,
that doesn't leave you with a whole lot of leeway
to accomplish some of the other things
that you'd like to this off-season.
So that is the reason why on today's episode,
we are taking a page out of the Sun's book
and we are firing up trade machine Tuesday
to figure out maybe some of the ways
that the Diamondbacks can improve this off-season.
This guy grabbed a bunch of crazy trades
that I... Some of them will be crazy.
Some of them will be at least somewhat reasonable.
He's going to surprise me with all of them.
Yeah, Derek hasn't seen any of them yet.
I've seen any, and I legitimately can't wait to see my instant reaction to some of these terrible trades.
But more importantly, there's a trade I very much do like.
And that would be if the Diamondbacks could get one Johan Duran from the Minnesota Twins, Jesse.
Yeah, Yohan Duran and name people maybe have heard before, a guy who was once traded from the
Arizona Diamondbacks. He was part of the Eduardo Escobar trade to the Minnesota Twins back in 2018.
He was in, I believe, single A at the time, not really a guy who clearly had potential at the time.
His stuff was impressive at that point, but he was like such a steal at the time.
He was pretty far away from really harnessing that stuff. But boy, did he manage to do that.
He has emerged as one of the best relievers in all of baseball. And we're going to talk about him as a
potential target for the diamondbacks in a trade. We look at Duran's numbers from
the 2024 season, 3.64 ERA and 54 in a third innings, a one one six whip,
strikeout rate just under 30% at 28.9, a walk percentage of 6.6. And he was 23 of 25 in save
opportunities. The 364 ERA here, Derek, maybe doesn't jump off the page, but you look at some of
the underlying numbers with Yohan Duran. He has been one of the best relievers in the sport for a while.
here's his savant page and there's a lot of a lot of bright red here a lot of bright red uh the other thing
that you like about uh duran is the fact that he is under team control until 2027 he is not a free
agent until 2028 so there is a lot of time left there so if you do have to give up a lot of
prospects if you do have to sacrifice parts of the future you are getting a guy that's going to be a
part of this team for quite a while this is just the beginning of his career so that's the
beautiful part about this is like he could still get better you could pair him together with justin
martinez and those two guys right could be the back end i mean and you could factor a j puck in there as well
but those those two guys could be the back end of your bullpen for some time and man that could be
quite the duo i think that it again going back to when they made that trade was hard to deny how
important edwardo eskabar was to this team when he came on and how much the fans adored him so i i don't think
This is like one of those trades like worked out for everybody.
It worked out the diamondbacks in the time.
And it was kind of an instant addition that made the team better at a major league level.
And now you're seeing, you know, obviously what Duran's doing for the Minnesota Twins.
And it's impressive.
And it would be great.
It would be great to bring him back home.
Yeah.
Again, some of the, you know, a 3.6 for ERA, that's not like, doesn't scream, you know, excellent closer necessarily.
but the underlying numbers here really haven't changed from past seasons when Duran has been awesome,
like really one of the best closers in the league.
His fastball averaged 100.5 miles per hour in 2024.
So you have to you have to like that.
Actually down somewhat considerably from the year before, it averaged 101.8 in 2023.
So I'm guessing people probably aren't too concerned about his VLO dropping when it's still over 100 miles an hour.
He has some similarities to Justin Martinez, really, a guy who throws 100 miles an hour who has a wipeout splitter.
He has a curve ball as well.
But yeah, there's a lot to like here, as you said, three years of club control, someone who could really lock down the ninth inning here through, yeah, I mean, through the 2027 season.
And if at some point you do feel like you don't necessarily need a closer of his caliber, you could obviously move him to another team.
and he would remain a valuable trade asset here for quite some time.
Tim in the chat says Duran and Buxton for McCarthy.
We can't do that because if so, get me, give me someone on the phone.
I'd pull that trigger, right?
Yeah.
Even taking on Buxton's contract.
I'd have to double check on Buxton's contract.
I don't think the twins would be very likely to do that.
And this is where this is where this gets a little bit tricky of even if the trade is just for Yoan Duran.
exactly how do you work this out.
Right.
I don't think the Diamondbacks and twins are necessarily great matches for each other in
terms of a trade.
I think the twins probably would be interested in acquiring an outfielder, but they
more so right-handed hitting than left-handed hitting.
And the Diamondbacks don't really have a right-handed hitting outfielder that they
could trade outside of L. Lourdes-Curiel Jr.
And I think that would be sort of counterproductive for the twins.
They're trying to shed salary this offseason.
Not take on a new contract.
Yeah, like $14 million for Gurreal.
I'm not sure that makes a ton of sense for them.
So, yeah, Buxden is on a seven-year, $100 million deal that goes through 2028.
The ceiling with Byron Buxton, you have to love.
He was pretty good when healthy in 2024.
Yeah.
Had a problem staying healthy.
Yeah, has had issues staying healthy for quite some time.
Yeah, I don't think the twins would have much of any interest if the return is just Jake
McCarthy. Can I offer you one pre-loved Jordan Montgomery? I tried. I tried you guys. Well,
if taking on the Jordan Montgomery contract doesn't make sense for any team in the league,
it is, it is probably the Minnesota Twins. They, if anything, I think, might be looking to unload
a starter on their end. So yes, large intimate Kevin Thomas. Yeah. So I have an update on the question
you posed to the chat of if they would sign Christian Walker for four years,
$100 million.
$62% say no.
They would not do Christian Walker for years, $100 million contract.
Yeah.
38% saying yes is still like feels almost high.
Like $4 and $100 million for Christian Walker.
I mean, I don't want to downplay how valuable a player he's been these last three years.
But you don't see guys entering their age 34 season signed for $100 plus million
dollars very often.
You know, position player, pitcher, anything.
Like that's just not something that we see hardly at all in Major League Baseball.
So but maybe that's where the price tag goes.
I mean, you know, with the Juan Soto situation, like I don't think he was worth $765 million.
But if the demand is there and the teams that are vying for that player have the money to spend,
then there isn't necessarily a cap on how high that dollar value can go.
So, yeah, who knows, who knows where the price tag wants.
Cam says newly upgraded Montgomery.
I like that.
That sounds good.
I think we could get,
I think we shop them around
on the Facebook marketplace
for that amount.
I did want to remind you guys

I'm sure he has a bow guy for sure.
Don't they have him at the dealership?
You think they'd have like a bow closet.
That would be smart.
Like a bow stock closet.
I'm sure they do.
Sanderson Ford with their customer satisfaction rate, definitely have bows in stock over there.

all right well it's it's tuesday uh diamond back still haven't done anything and we're going to fire they did
something today did something today yeah i shouldn't say that uh just like our guy nicholas uh who we were worried
was never going to come back from japan but we're glad that he did uh he dropped us to super chat 20
thank you so much nicholas he said thank you to everyone here for making this community elite uh nicholas
you're a big part of that in doing so and honestly it's every time i go in the discord i i realize how
great our community is right it's like uh i don't know i maybe this isn't the best comparison but it was
like it's like a little garden we started that's like grown so out of control that like we can't even
we we don't even do anything now there's garden gnomes that take care of it we don't have to do anything
but thank you for your super chat we appreciate that uh and definitely uh operation santa claus
thanks you so much jesse we are going to fire up the trade machine today and see what it spits out in regards
to potential trades for the Arizona Diamondbacks,
ways to make this team better in 2025,
or maybe ways to make this team better beyond 2025.
And I will preface this by saying that all of these trades came from
baseball tradevalues.com,
which is a bit of a controversial website.
I'm not going to say that I necessarily agree with their evaluations of players,
which is really what people base these trades on.
These are all just trades that were put out into the public,
They have a trade board over on the website and so basically I just searched for diamondbacks and scrolled through every single diamond backs every single trade that people have proposed involving the diamond backs here in the last month or so
and I I took out pretty much all of the super crazy ones, but there are a couple of crazy ones along the way
So we'll yeah, we'll we'll see where this goes. Let's get to it. I can't wait. All right. What do we got? Let's fire one up. What do we got trade machine?
All right.
So the first trade that we have, very simple, something that I think we might have discussed
this exact trade actually on the show or something very similar to this.
Josh Naylor going to the Diamondbacks in exchange for Gilbert Diaz going to the Cleveland
Guardians, according to baseball trade values, which again, the methodology behind these trade
values, I think conceptually it is accurate whether or not the actual numbers that they spit out
are accurate.
I don't really think so.
So I always take these trade values with a grain of salt,
but they have Diaz for Naylor actually being advantage diamond backs,
or being advantage Guardian, sorry,
with Yolbert Diaz having a slightly higher trade value than Naylor,
according to this system.
At the end of the day, it really comes down to how do the guardians feel about
Gilbert Diaz?
Do they think he's going to be able to stay as a starting pitcher?
Or would he maybe be a big time weapon in the bullpen for them for a number of years?
So Derek, how do we feel about this one?
I'm approving that trade.
I'm taking that phone call and I'm agreeing to that trade.
I think the idea here is that Gilbert Diaz has proven that he's major league ready this season.
I think he's still as, you know, obviously some growth there.
But I do think that he is not only capable of playing at a major league level,
but I think he can have success at a major league level.
So I do fear that honestly would taking that deal,
the biggest downside would be.
to see Diaz's success elsewhere, I'm sure I'd maybe feel a little bit differently.
However, Josh Naylor is a really good first baseman.
And I think the addition solves a lot of problems for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
So I think I'm accepting that one.
Josh Naylor, we've talked about him in the past, but just as a refresher, he has just one year of club control remaining.
So it would just be a one year rental, which I think is why baseball, the website thinks that that's actually an advantage.
advantage guardians trade.
But yeah, Nailer was pretty good.
He's been a solid, steady performer for a number of years.
And 2024 was no different for him.
He had a 776 OPS, a 118 OPS plus, pretty similar to Christian Walker.
Walker was at 121, I believe.
He had 31 homers and 108 RBI.
So he has power.
He would sort of replace Walker offensively.
I think it's a fairly close match.
defensively, of course, is a different story.
Neeler, not a terrible
first base defender, but he is
not as good as Christian Walker.
I think the
one thing there that I started thinking is
what is the rotation going to look like
after 2025? What is the starting
rotation going to look like, right? So you know
who's here, you know that you obviously
were going to have Ryan Nelson, Brandon
fought, Eduardo Rodriguez,
but who fills out those other two spots?
Gilbert Diaz feels like he could be
a fifth man in the rotation
at that point, which that's the one thing that makes me hesitate about the Josh Naylor trade here.
Also, I would hope that the Diamondbacks go out and spend some money on if they're going to lose both Merrill Kelly and Zach Allen.
I hope they go and find somebody to replace those guys and bring in a new, you know, starting pitcher to the rotation next season.
But I'm just saying as far as the future goes, I mean, Gilbert Diaz could be a big part of the Diamondbacks future.
So I don't know.
I think I do think that the idea of the, you know, only one year of Nailer definitely gives me pause.
there and makes me you know maybe maybe rethink that a little bit however again if you're going
all in on this season then you can't really care about things like oh you know a player being a rental
right i mean you kind of got to pull the trigger and you got to make uh make the team better for
2025 and i don't know if he makes the team better than christian walker but he definitely fills
that gap left by christian walker's absence right it wouldn't be uh it wouldn't be a devastating
loss it wouldn't be a huge setback you'd feel like you you weren't exactly
replacing Christian Walker, but you were getting pretty close.
Naylor, I know someone asked in the chat, his arbitration estimate is $12 million for
2025, according to MLB trade rumors.
So expect him to make about 12.
And then someone also made a good point in the chat about how he's someone, you figure
you could give a qualifying offer to next offseason.
So even if you just have Naylor for the one season, then you let him walk, you have a pretty
good chance of being able to get a draft pick in return.
Very true.
Just as the debacks would probably do this offseason with Christian Walker.
And that's something that, you know, if they can continue to do that, that's going to be vital to the, you know, the improvement of this team going forward.
It's that's, that's, those are the kind of moves that they have to make and think about those qualifying offers and how those additional draft picks can benefit the franchise.
All right.
What else do we have?
Hold up.
Hold up.
Trade machine got jammed with a super chat from Transonic.
Oh.
Oh, yeah.
Let's drop it.
This one's a pretty iconic one than these trades.
This one's pretty cool.
This super chat is for Operation Crampus.
Derek is the heat mizer.
and Jesse is a snow miser
If you know you know Jesse might do you know
I don't know but but but
But I still appreciate the
The creativity you know
It's it's it's the $10 super chat that I appreciate
But I also be also appreciate being called the heat miser
I like that all right what else do we have
Can we get the trade machine back on on track
Okay here's another so that was pretty reasonable right like maybe the guardians don't want to
to do that. Maybe the debacks don't want to do that. But I think I think the nailer for Diaz swap on
paper makes sense. This one I think is also sort of in that category of like, okay, like you can
sort of understand how this could make sense for both sides. This is quite simple. This is the Astros
receiving Tommy Henry and the Diamondbacks receiving Ryan Presley and Cash from the Houston Astros.
Presley for those who don't know, like Josh Naylor, has one year of club control remaining.
Presley, I believe, is slated to make $14 million next year.
So that's why we have the Astros kicking in $1 million in cash, which wouldn't be super
significant, but I guess helps things out a little bit.
And of course, not a, I don't want to say Tommy Henry is, you know, no chance to have a
significant role in the rotation this next season.
Mike Hazen very much talked him up during the winter meetings, but not an enormous price
to pay in terms of prospect capital in exchange for.
Ryan Presley, who's been one of the better back-end relievers in the sport here for the last few years.
We got a huge super chat.
Yeah.
Can you hit any, do we have any noises?
I don't, I need more than just that.
What, you got something over there?
Like, make some noise.
I mean, we could play, we could play some, we can play the theme song.
This is theme song.
Yeah, no, for sure.
Hit it.
I mean, that's definitely worth it.
S.F, you beautiful human being with a hundred dollar super chat.
Let's go.
SF, this wonderful, wonderful human beings,
is the best, especially Derek Jesse and the D-BACs team.
Looking forward to your great podcast and stories in 2025.
Thank you so much.
My goodness.
We appreciate it so much.
Oh, it's Roadrunner.
Let's go, Roadrunner.
Thank you so much from our Discord.
That's incredible.
Thank you so much.
We appreciate you.
My goodness.
I'm going to have to, I don't know.
I'll do something special in the Discord just for you guys.
you and elizabeth are are incredible and all of our all of the super chats i don't mean to undermine any of them
all of you guys are amazing this is uh all going to a great cause so we appreciate you guys uh doing that
and of course yeah let's uh beat some of these other beats now now now we got a chance jessi
now we got some money can we i'm i mean i know we said we're going to put it towards operation
santa claus but can we put it towards christian walker at all i'm sure people would be fine with that right
i know it's not a lot of money but we'll put whatever we can towards helping them out um
If it is four years and $100 million, that's a lot.
We're on our way.
We're making progress.
Let's go back to this trade.
I want to accept immediately because we're trading away Tommy Henry for Ryan, Ryan,
Ryan, right, Ryan Presley here plus cash.
Why is this, what's going on here with the trade value on this one?
Jesse, can you explain this to me?
Yeah, yeah.
So they, yeah, and again, I don't put a ton of stock in these numbers.
But they have Tommy Henry is just straight zero, which I don't really know exactly how.
how they get there.
You know,
granted Tommy Henry when he was on the field
was a below replacement level player
in 2024.
So I guess they're saying that the projection moving forward
is that Tommy Henry is basically just going to be
pretty close to replacement level
such that the, you know,
the money that he makes, he would be worth that money,
but no more, no less, basically just a,
just a blank zero.
Okay. And then on the Astro side of this,
you can see Ryan Presley there.
I think he was a minus 1.4 or something like that.
And so that's just coming from the fact that Presley is going to make $14 million next season.
And at this stage in his career, I'm not sure that Ryan Presley is necessarily worth that.
I know some people in the chat were wondering, like, would you rather just pay a Tanner Scott or a Jeff Hoffman or a Kirby Yates?
Would you rather just pay one of those top arms, one of those top back end relievers in free agency as opposed to making a trade like this with the Astros?
Well, I don't hate this.
I don't hate this at all.
And again, I think when I see more value in Gilbert Diaz's future with the Diamondbacks than I do in Tommy Henry, despite the fact that Tommy Henry gives them the depth this season.
But if we can retain, you know, Diaz, I think Diaz could fill that role that Henry kind of did where he gives them depth.
Plus, I don't know if you know this, but we do currently have six starting pitchers.
So the depth is kind of there.
I'm pulling the trigger on this deal.
So Ryan Presley, it's a $14 million mutual option.
So yeah, he would make $14 million in 2025.
And yeah, I think this is pretty reasonable.
Like if the Diamondbacks do trade for Ryan Presley,
which I think could make sense.
They need a back-end reliever.
I think Presley is someone,
the Astros could be willing to trade,
especially as they look to stay under the competitive balance tax as well.
But yeah, I wonder if the Diamondback
would want the Astros to eat a little bit more money here.
Make it so that the discount from Presley compared to some of the other guys that they could
just sign on the open market is larger.
Because I do think that if you can get Kirby Yates for one year and $14 million,
would you rather just go sign Kirby Yates than trade for Ryan Presley and basically spend
the exact same amount of money and give up some of your pitching depth than Tommy Henry.
So, yeah, I think if you're the debacks, you'd maybe want the Astros to eat a little bit more
money here. I'm not totally sure if they'd be willing to do that. Presley had an ERA in the mid
three's in 2024. Some of the underlying metrics have have taken quite a step off in the in the last
few years. So I don't know for sure if the Astros would be willing to go there. But if you're the
debacks, I think that's what you would want given some of the other options on the market.
All right. What else do we got? Kevin, what? Hit that hit that go button.
Next we have this this one is we've officially ventured into crazy tarry.
Yes. The answer is yes. We did it. We finally did it. Yes. Jesse, no, don't even read it. Just yes. Accept the offer. Do it. Get Reese Hoskins here immediately. This is yes. This is an absolute affirmative.
So this is two bad contracts being exchanged, right? The Diamondbacks sending Jordan Montgomery to the Milwaukee Brewers and the brewer's sending back Reese Hoskins, a first basement that they signed last off season. His first year, Milwaukee.
did not go so well.
He was just below replacement level, according to baseball reference.
He had a 722 OPS.
Did hit 26 homers, but he walked a decent amount,
but there wasn't a ton of power to speak of outside of those,
outside of those 26 homers.
His OPS plus was just 98.
So he was a below average hitter,
and the defense metrics here are especially rough.
I don't know if you want Reese Hoskins playing first base for you.
However, he is a viable first base option.
And now that he is another year removed from the ACL injury, you could talk yourself into Reese
Hoskins really bouncing back in potentially a big way.
We saw this with Ronald Acuna Jr.
When he heard his ACL for the first time, his first year back, he was not the same player.
But the year after that, he was outstanding, right?
So you can talk yourself into some upside on Hoskins.
You can talk yourself.
Maybe the Brewers could talk themselves into some upside with Jordan Montgomery.
ultimately I think the brewers would love to get off reese Hoskins contracts but I don't think that they want to take back another bad contract in exchange well they have to that's part of the deal they genuinely might I mean I don't I don't know if if getting off the Reese Hoskins contract is doable for them in any way other than something like this where they take back another another player in return Tim says no thanks Reese was awful unplayable I'm going to say you're right however I'm also going to
to say, give me him.
He slashed an abysmal 214-19 with a 98 OPS plus.
Not good at all.
However, I need a guy like Reese Hoskins on the Arizona Diamondbacks.
I needed, you need an Evan Longoria, you need a Jock Peterson, you need a Tommy Fam, you need
these guys.
Not only do they provide veteran leadership, but Reese Hoskins in his current state is so agitated.
he's such an angry old man that he brings a different kind of energy.
The Diamondbacks, they're powered by team friendship, right?
And the problem with team friendship is sometimes that just let you kind of go around
with like, you know, rainbows and unicorns and stuff,
just having a good time making friends with everybody.
I need somebody on this team that is going to do the opposite.
I need someone that's going to make lifelong enemies for this team.
I need rivalries.
And Reese Hoskins will fight every single person in the N.O. West all by himself.
So give me Reese Hoskins, get me off this soft Jordan Montgomery contract and let's move on with our lives.
I think both players can be better if they went elsewhere.
So let's do it.
If any team can figure out Jordan Montgomery, like the Milwaukee Brewers are a pretty good candidate for that, right?
Oh, he would love it there too.
I think it's possible.
I don't want to say why, but he'll love it there.
I think the reasons are obvious, but I don't want to say why.
I think it's just mean.
I think it's possible that the Brewers could get Montgomery.
back on track.
But yeah, again, I think most likely they want to move off the Reese Hoskins contract
as much as they can and shed some salary in the process.
In this case, the money is basically a wash.
Hoskins is set to make $18 million in 2025.
Montgomery is set to make 22 and a half in 2025.
But Hoskins also has an $18 million mutual option for 2026 that has a $4 million buyout.
So even if even if the diamondbacks were to decline that option for 2026, they would still owe them four more million dollars, in which case the money is pretty much exactly the same.
So yeah, maybe a change of scenery for both guys, you know, gets them back on track.
You can kind of talk yourself into this one, but I don't think the brewers could talk themselves into this one.
And I don't know if the diamondbacks necessarily would want to do this either.
The diamondbacks also might prefer to just shed as much of the Montgomery money as they can.
And not take on another bad content.
Yeah, it just spend that money doing something else.
So probably doesn't make sense for either team.
But on paper, it's like reasonably fair.
It's wild that I slander Jordan Montgomery the way I do,
considering how often I have actually defended him and said,
I feel like the biggest mistake would be parting ways with him because I know that,
like, honestly, I still feel like the only way to make this entire deal look good.
In order to make this entire deal seem like it wasn't a disaster.
isn't to trade him because it still looks like a disaster,
especially if you're doing it just to shed contract.
The only way it looks good is if he stays with the Diamondbacks
and then bounces back in 2025
and makes you forget about how bad he was in 2024.
So I feel like that's still the route to go,
but we'll see what happens with the Diamondbacks.
We have more trades to discuss.
We have a lot more.
A lot more trades to discuss on the other side of this break.
Don't you guys go anywhere?
All right.

I'm waiting for confirmation on that.
Jesse, give me some more.
trades because I can't get enough and I'm ready to reject some trades and accept some more.
All righty.
I guess have you you've rejected all of them so far.
Have I?
I mean, no, I did I?
Did I?
I don't know.
I'm looking at the trade machine guys and it's stuck again.
We have another super chat.
This time from R.A.
$50 from R.A.
Much love to the best Ph.
and X.
We appreciate you.
I love you R.A.
Thank you so much for the love.
And we appreciate you and your wonderful super chat.
My goodness, $50.
You guys are bringing it today.
We thank you guys all for your amazing super chats.
And again, if you were just joining us, those super chats are all going to Operation Santa Claus 100% proceeds to help out this holiday season.
So make sure you keep them coming.
And again, no matter how big or small, we appreciate you guys so much.
Thank you so much to each and every one of you for you guys helping us out with that.
Jesse, what do we got?
Did we get the trade machine going here?
I mean, you're going to keep feeding me Jordan Montgomery trades.
I'm going to say, yes, that's not my fault.
That's your fault.
So this one, kind of a similar makeup, but with a wrinkle added as well.
This is Jordan Montgomery going to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for two players, one of them, a name that is fairly recognizable.
I think Masataka Yoshita, has been outfielder designated hitter for the Red Sox for the last couple of years, as well as Luis Perales, who is a...
Nice, Jesse, let's go.
And I did my best.
who is a pitching prospect in the Red Sox organization,
someone who's still a couple years away,
I believe in AA right now,
or that's where he finished the 2024 season.
One of the better prospects in the Red Sox system.
So, you know,
he's not,
he's not Marcello Mayor necessarily,
but I believe he is ranked,
I want to say number seven.
Yeah, number seven on MLB Pipeline
in a very, very good Boston Red Sox system.
So they give his fastball a 70 grade on the 2080 scale, his slider of 55 on the 20 to 80 scale.
It seems like there's a decent amount of relief pitcher risk there.
But someone who could potentially be a back end starter or a high leverage reliever for the debacks for a number of years.
Is the big negative impact there as far as the trade value is concerned is the size of Yoshita's contract?
Yes.
He signed a five-year $90 million deal to start the 23 season.
So he would still have three years of that $90 million, which is quite a bit of money.
Close to close to $20 million a year.
Yeah.
So I think you would definitely want, you would much prefer to have Montgomery's contract than Yoshita,
I think, in a vacuum because Montgomery is just one more season, whereas Yoshita is three more seasons.
And I guess we should talk a little bit about like who Yoshita is as a player.
He has by no means been terrible since the Red Sox signed him.
But he's not really, has not really been worth the amount of money that they've given him.
His defense in left field was very poor.
He's more of a designated hitter type, really, at this stage in his career.
But he can hit, he hit 10 home runs, 56 RBI, 108 games played in 2024, an OPS plus of 112.
So he's an above average bat that you can plug into your DH slot and I think feel pretty good about.
But again, this is someone that you're paying $18 million to for three,
for three more seasons compared to, you know, Jordan Montgomery where even if you're not so bullish
on him bouncing back in 2025, it's just the one more season and then you're done with that contract.
I mean, the answer is yes.
I know that continues a trend.
I guess I just want the Diamondbacks to do something so bad.
No, I'm saying yes to this one.
I'm saying yes because I don't care about the size of Yoshida's contract.
I feel like there is at least the opportunities.
there to grow and get better.
I don't know if you could say the same about the bad contract of Jordan Montgomery.
However, I mean, are the Diamondbacks right now financially able to take on the contract
like $18 million per year for a DH?
Well, I mean, his numbers are hovering close to 300.
It's not there, but in his career, he's hitting 285, 343, 433 with a 775 OPS.
So again, not even the strongest numbers for a DH.
Right.
today's money however is not tomorrow's money as jesse would say it's not the future money and i i even
though like 18 million seems like a lot for a d h now i mean i don't know how much that's going to seem
after next you know next off season and beyond so i i think that there is uh at least some uh a little bit
higher reward versus risk with him whereas jordan montgomery i'm i'm feeling a little bit more
negative about you know at times about the idea of him bouncing back however uh you know this
So this helps build towards the future.
And that's the reason why I like this the most is,
even though this doesn't go all in in 2025,
like the Diamondbacks intend to do,
this helps them,
you know,
start building what that team is going to look like after 2025.
I think you really have to be very bought in on Perales as a,
as a pitching prospect to want to want to do this.
If you're the Diamondbacks,
I just think Yoshida's value is a little bit capped.
He played,
he played one inning in left field in 2024.
But other than that,
the Red Sox used him exclusively as a DH.
And as you said, he's a little bit above average as a hitter, but not so far.
Like he's not Jack Peterson up there, right?
He's not getting anywhere close to like what the Jack Peterson, Randall Grishik,
Platoon gave the Diamondbacks this past season.
So my guess is if the debacks do trade Montgomery for, you know, a bad contract of some sort,
which I think they're open to.
They'd probably prefer it to be someone who didn't have three more seasons as Yoshita does.
All right, Jesse.
Give me one more trade that I can.
approve because we we I'm just I'm in an approving mood so well I didn't set the order so I don't
if you'll approve this or not but uh this one is fascinating this one is this one is bold this is a
little bit more complicated this is a deal with the Pittsburgh pirates apparently the pirates are
in are willing to listen on their young pitcher Jared Jones who's one of the best young pitchers in
all of baseball made his big league debut in 2024 and he had a 4.14 ERA.
but his underlying numbers were pretty dang impressive.
So the Diamondbacks here acquiring David Bednar,
who once upon a time was a big name target that we discussed on the show,
less so after a 2024 season.
That was pretty brutal.
But the Diamondbacks getting both Bednar and Jared Jones.
Jared Jones has five more seasons of control,
2025 through 2029.
But the Diamondbacks would pay a hefty price in order to get this.
If we can pull up the trade graphic.
one more time. I hate this. The Diamondbacks would give the pirates. It would send to Pittsburgh,
Jake McCarthy, Adrian Del Castillo, and Tommy Troy. This feels like a hefty price to pay, maybe Derek,
but honestly, I don't think the pirates would consider this. I think if you could get Jared Jones
at this price, I think you would do it. I think this deal would have been done a long time ago if the
diamondbacks were able to pull this off. My guess is that Pittsburgh is not, would want more,
some bigger names included in a deal for Jared Jones.
He's not a free agent until 2030.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like the odds aren't even in my favor that I'm going to be still alive in 2030,
let alone, you know, able to watch Jared Jones pitch for the Arizona Diamondbacks up until
that point.
But I don't know.
I mean, it's funny how this is the trade that people in the chat are like, do this one
instantly.
And meanwhile, I'm like, hmm, I hate all that that we're giving up.
but Jared Jones has a chance to be, you know, he has a chance to be really good.
Right.
And the only problem is the only thing that gives me pause is that he did pitch in 24
in the major league level, right?
He made his debut.
And in 121 and two thirds innings, he had a 4.14 ERA.
And I'm not putting a whole lot of stock into that.
But still, it's like, I don't know.
I mean, that's not a number right now that blows me away.
However, the promise is there, right?
the yeah the that's a guy that's going to get better and my god can you only imagine uh what phone calls
he is going to get from um one one brent strom in the middle of the night telling him how to
improve so can only imagine how much better he's going to be once brett strom lose his sleep
over which side of the mound he's going to pitch from but uh yeah i mean i guess the one thing
that the diamondbacks need is an ace of the future right and that's what jared jones absolutely
would be for this team. So I will keep my trend of approving every trade and I will give my stamp
of approval on this one. May oral stamp approved. Let's get this trade done. We haven't gotten rid of any
components of this trade and other trade. So we can maybe make a lot of these trades. Yeah, you can just do,
I guess there's some overlap with the Montgomery ones. You have to pick between those, but all the other
ones. Can I offer you three pre-owned Jordan Montgomery. We'll figure it out somehow, some way.
But on the other side of this break, we're going to talk about altering Chase Field to attract some more free agents, much like the Orioles did with Tyler O'Neill.
Don't you guys go anywhere?
We'll be right back.

All right, Jesse.
Well, Tyler O'Neill signed with the Baltimore Orioles, and he did maybe in jest.
Maybe he actually meant it.
I don't know, but he did say that the Orioles moving the left field wall back to where it was,
was a factor in him wanting to sign there.
Right?
Yeah, yeah.
And I mean, I think it's just common sense.
Like we've talked about Ryan Mountcastle as a potential target for the Diamondbacks.
this off season.
Correct.
And one of the biggest factors there is his numbers don't look all that great because
they move the fence way back.
Yeah.
It became,
uh,
it became just a,
a brutal situation.
Like a lot of,
a lot of batted balls throughout the year where you're like,
oh,
this would be a home run in 29 out of 30 ballparks.
I wonder what the one ballpark where it wouldn't be a home run is.
And the answer every single time.
Every single time.
So yeah,
I think they've,
they've gotten,
they're bringing it back to a to a,
to a reasonable, a reasonable place.
The dimensions are going to be more in line
with what you see around the league.
And if you're a right-handed slugger
like Tyler O'Neill, of course that's going to factor in.
You don't want to sign with a team
whose ballpark is going to steal a bunch of home runs
from you over the course of the season.
So, yeah, no real surprises on that for me.
See, what's weird is that they moved it in the first place, right?
Like, I know that they were trying,
uh, they changed the dimensions of the left field wall,
which earned the nickname Mount
Baltimore by right, by the way,
which I really loved when they moved
at 30 feet back.
And they did that in an effort to pursue
a more neutral and pitcher friendly
array at Camden Yards. It's wild.
Everybody in Major League Baseball was trying
to create more offense. And meanwhile,
the Orioles are like, no, no,
no more left field home runs,
basically, is what they were going for.
But it's back. And it just makes me
wonder, Jesse, what kind of changes
can we make to chase field?
to lure more free agents.
I know the obvious thing is air conditioning
because the last thing they want to hear is about
Monty and Merrill Kelly
talking about cramping and not wanting to pitch there.
So super cold,
revolutionary air conditioning,
just blasts ice cold air into there.
That's already been done.
We're moving on past that.
That's an easy answer.
I say,
how far out can we move the foul poles?
How much fair space can we give them?
Can we move the foul poles out?
Is that unfair?
We've been wanting to reduce
the number of seats in Chase Field.
Can we just make it a wider area of play to make it a more hitter-friendly ballpark?
You know, I hadn't really thought about that.
That's a good idea.
Just got to shave some things down the line.
I don't know.
I mean, we can get rid of the bullpens.
Like the San Francisco didn't care about where the bullpen had to go when they were putting
their ballpark together.
We don't have to either.
But that in fact, just like knock out tons of seats in order to make the field of play
wider.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I like that.
I don't hate that at all.
See, you think they're going to get rid of the upper deck seats?
No, no, no, they're going to get rid of the closer seats is what they're going to do.
But yeah, no, I mean, I like, again, pool, right?
Like the slide, would the slide attract anybody?
I still want the Bernie, the Brewer slide added to the Chasefield pool.
Maybe it can go from the upper deck area, kind of where that porch is to the down.
And again, if you're a free agent, you get a lifetime.
No, not lifetime.
You get a limited time, you know, pass.
You can ride the slide as many times as you want to.
Does Baxter go down the slide and jump into the pool?
Every time someone hits a home run.
Yeah.
I mean, that's a like that's pretty marketable, right?
If I'm a free agent, like I'm a big time slugger and I want I want the in stadium vibes to just be totally electric every time I go yard.
Then yeah, Baxter going down the slide and jumping into the pool.
I mean, I don't know how you get better.
Here's how it gets better.
Baxter is a Bobcat.
right and cats have a natural aversion to water so every time baxter goes down the slide he does it
unwillingly someone has to shove him down the slide and he scratches and claws his way down the whole time
like he doesn't want to go and then he freaks out once he's in the pool like a cat would i'm just i mean
whatever we're bring back the pool cannons for the home runs if we're going to have him slide down
can we bring back the water shooting out of the pool maybe i don't know maybe it hits opposing outfielders
Maybe it sprays on the field to play.
That's a big time in your face, right?
We know where they stand.
There's worn spots on the field.
But I don't know.
That's all the ideas I have.
If you guys have some ideas, make sure to drop them in the chat.
We also need some more trade suggestions.
So make sure you do that as well.
Most importantly, make sure you follow all of us on Twitter.
I'm at cap underscore Kman with a K.

I don't know those things.
I don't know how to give you that information.
But I'm at cap underscore Kman with K.
They don't allow underscores over there, so it's weird for me.
He's at Jesse and Friedman.
