So are the Arizona Diamondbacks bringing back an old friend?
Starting point is 00:00:27 I brought in the mayor, the expert, Derek Montia, to talk about this. And Derek, there is a rumor out there. that a new city connect jersey is on the way. Yes. Which has been confirmed that much that there is a New Jersey coming, but there is a rumor that purple is coming back with it. Have you heard this rumor and are excited? I'm very excited for purple coming back, and I have heard this rumor.
Starting point is 00:00:52 I think the one downside to it is that I think what a lot of people want with the purple isn't necessarily just the purple, right? Like, it's great to know that the color scheme is kind of going away from the black and sand that the Serpientas jersey kind of had. I mean, the burlap sacs. Yeah, right. I mean, let's be, let's call it. Like, even the, you know, giveaway jerseys looked better. And they were like an opposite color scheme of going with the black and the beige riding in the middle, right? So I don't know.
Starting point is 00:01:25 I mean, I know a lot of people aren't big fans of the Serpientis jersey and are looking forward to them moving on. I think I would prefer if the Diamondbacks do this, that they obviously do some sort of nod to the history of this team because everybody loves the old color scheme. But beyond the color scheme, people love the jerseys themselves and the way that they were designed, the way that the old jerseys of the 1999 team and the 2001 team looked.
Starting point is 00:01:52 And I think people want that more than just the purple. It just depends on how they do it. Yeah, I don't think they're going to get a throwback. I like the Serpientes branding and I could see where they try to evolve that. I hope they don't. I hope the City Connect program they evolve it each time. And it's not just kind of a rewash of what it is. That's what I'm concerned about is that it's just basically a rebranding of the current jersey in different colors, which probably would still look great.
Starting point is 00:02:22 Right. Like if you have it in different colors and you kind of make it pop more than the, you know, honestly the drab sand color, which I've never been really a huge fan of them having as any kind of primary color in their jersey scheme. But you also have the fact that this, you know, is what fans want. I think we've seen a lot of merchandise produced from the team that is like a combination of the old colors and the new colors. One of our guys here in the studios wearing a pinstripe hat with the Serpientis logo in teal, right? Like so I think it could look sharp depending on what it ends up looking like.
Starting point is 00:02:58 And I don't think we're going to have to wait too long. Derek Hall did say that the new City Connect jersey would be unveiled during spring training at some point. My guess is that since they were one of the first to get the City Connect and they're one of the first to get the second generation, they're probably going to wear them earlier in the year because didn't they tear roll them out throughout the league the first time? Yeah, there were like certain teams that got them and they were in certain groupings. I just, I think I'm jealous of certain teams and the way that they have something like that's really kind of out there, right? Like I'm a huge fan of the Tampa Bay, yeah, Tampa Bay Ray is City Connect, right?
Starting point is 00:03:34 I even really like what the Rangers, even though it's kind of odd and I'm like, it's like, it's not like I, I like it a lot. I just, I like the idea of what they did. And I like the fact that they went in such a different direction rather than something that kind of, again, just could,
Starting point is 00:03:51 like the Serpientis kind of just was a rebranding of almost like the Diamondbacks thing, you know, so like, I don't know. You don't want to go as far as San Diego, though, right? Like not that. Do you want to go that far? No, I mean, that's the one danger here is that they do a city connect jersey that now we're stuck with for the next, what, four years. And it's bad and we don't like it.
Starting point is 00:04:10 I mean, I don't know. Like even San Diego's eventually grew on me. I think that's one thing about these kind of wild jersey combinations is even if you don't like them at first. I think eventually you get to a point of liking it. My fear is that they, because they're not just going to do a three. That's it. They would just call it a throwback jersey and it wouldn't be considered city connect, right? So there's going to be some uniqueness to this.
Starting point is 00:04:41 But when I hear they're going to bring purple back, I don't think it's going to be a purple jersey. I think it's going to be like a purple will be an accent. Okay. All right. That's just my read on it because having been with the sons during the disgrace former owners, tenure and seeing how they tried to completely move away from purple, which the dimebacks did. And it was very much a, it was tied to former ownership and everything. I just don't see them going back to a fully purple jersey.
Starting point is 00:05:15 I mean, it's one thing to have a throwback Thursday where you bring back, you know, one of the old jerseys. It's another thing to have a primarily purple, you know, kit that you're wearing, a full uniform that you're wearing out there. I think it's probably going to be some kind of black, purple, teal mixture. Which has always looked really good together. I mean, I know that we could sit here and, like,
Starting point is 00:05:39 there's a lot of things. I think if you're going to do it, you got to do it. You got to go fully with it. You want to go full grimace in honor of the match last year? Yeah, see, that's awful to think about. That's a good point. That's probably maybe, but what you need is some of that grimace luck, right?
Starting point is 00:05:52 You get on board with the grimace, you know? I mean, I've suggested that we bring in hamburger to throw out a first pitch year. Maybe the fry guys. But then that's a black and white striped with like a red tie kind of uniform. I don't know that that one. But the hamburger is all about stealing things. And this team steals a lot of bases.
Starting point is 00:06:09 It's true. And they go together hand and end. I mean, an all purple uniform would be chaos. So it would be chaos. And I mean, I wonder what like what the pants would look like. I want to see the whole fit like together.
Starting point is 00:06:19 What are you going to do for a hat? If you go full Barney, right? Which I don't even know of kids these days get that reference anymore. But if you go full Barney. I mean, that might be too much purple, you know. I'll say this. I do think that they're going to go purple. I think that they're going to go like full.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Bold. Because if they don't, if they don't, then it's one of their current designs almost, right? Like this jersey I'm wearing right now is black teal and all it's missing is this being purple instead. If you do something that's a whole jersey with a purple A. I don't hate that. Like I think I got to see it. I got to see it. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:06:55 I mean, it's it's all about how. radical it is. I mean, I do think that, again, the nature of these city connectors is to represent the community. Right. So, and like a big, a big complaint from Diamondbacks fans has been the lack of the original colors. From some players. Right. Like even some players. Right. Yeah. So like, that would be, I think, the biggest thing to take into account. But you also have to make it look sharp. And it has to look different. It has to look different from what these jerseys and their jerseys over the past couple of years have looked like. Well, and let's be fair, it has to be something that the average fan would wear, too,
Starting point is 00:07:30 because that's what this is about, is selling merch, right? Absolutely. I think the hat's an important factor to it as well, because that's what more the average fan will wear is they'll gravitate towards a hat, sometimes a jersey, obviously never the pants. But they could bring back like the ice cream man hat maybe with the purple brim, right? I have that bad boy in my closet. Right. White hat.
Starting point is 00:07:52 Yeah, white hat, purple brim, maybe the teal, you know, Serpientis S if they keep Zerpientis. I mean, there's a lot of things to consider, but I think, you know, again, the purple is probably the biggest thing. I miss like the teal copper accents. I miss some of the things I used to have on the sleeve. I mean, we should, we have stuff to talk about besides just. I need to ask, though. And forgive me, I do not know everybody that's on the coaching staff this year.
Starting point is 00:08:20 Okay. I have not studied up yet. Sure. Mike Federer still on the coach. He is not. Not a longer part. That's probably good because if they went all purple, he would have looked like goodness. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:30 He's got my kind of body type, and that is not a forgiving body type and purple. I understand. Look, enough about my body type. We're going to talk about our favorite Diamondbacks uniforms of all time on the other side. Got to tell you about our friends at Phoenix Raceway. Last year, Derek and I got an opportunity to go out there. We rode in a pace car. And I had never been out to Phoenix Raceway, and I got to tell you, that's on me because it's an unbelievable venue.
Starting point is 00:09:01 It really was. It was incredible. And I have been a fan ever since. I just watched the Daytona 500, and I'm very mad about the crash that happened late in the race. But that's a whole other thing. And the only reason why I care is because if you go out, you have yourself a great time out at Phoenix Raceway. Yeah, you got the Shriner's Children's 500 at Phoenix Raceway, March 7th through the 9th. You can head out there and have to have. have a great weekend. Fun for the whole family. This isn't, you know, just, oh, mom and dad get to go out there. No, it is fun for the whole family. And it's unbelievable what these guys do. 200 miles an hour around the track.
Starting point is 00:09:37 We went 100 in a pace car, and I thought I was going to lose my lunch. So I can only imagine what 200's like in that one-mile oval track that they go. You're going to see some of the best racers from across NASCAR. Denny Hamlin's going to be out there. Bubba Wallace. and the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series champion, Joey Lugano. So get your tickets at phoenix raceway.com.
Starting point is 00:10:01 And you were talking about you're going to have to go out to a wrestling show, right? Yes, sir. And you're looking for a safe way to get there. And our friends at Waymo can take care of you. Oh, that's the way I want to go. I don't want to talk to someone. I just want to get to the event. Yeah, I know you own a Jaguar already.
Starting point is 00:10:17 I did. So riding in one of these electric Jaguar Eye pace, cars is not that different for you, but it's an autonomous vehicle. I have to drive mine. So, I mean, yeah, the fact that this one doesn't require that is great. You don't have to talk to anybody and put your music on and you can, you know, tweet like you like to do or me too. You can do whatever you want, within reason. In a way, Mo on your way to do your next event, you know, you want to go out to spring training, they got you covered. You want to go to a wrestling event that can take you there too, or you want to just have a nice dinner with your wife and be able to
Starting point is 00:10:49 joy, a glass of Kianti. You can go there too with Waymo. Over 150,000 trips per week across San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. Waymo was the first company to serve a fully autonomous ride with no human behind the wheel, and they started in 2015, so they know what they're doing. So download the Waymo One app today and ride today. So we were talking about it on the other side of the break,
Starting point is 00:11:15 that we were going to discuss our favorite dime back to you. We talked about what the future duration may be, but I want to know what are your favorite Diamondbacks uniforms ever? I have definitely a love for the old design with the vest. I think that some of my favorite jersey designs always included the best. You had this one, the away jersey with the gray, with Arizona across it. You had the original, you know, white one. This one is the one I'm obviously wearing right now. I love this jersey.
Starting point is 00:11:48 This the Diamondback's current jersey is honestly one of the best I think they've ever had. This black jersey is by far my favorite. I think there's a lot of fans that agree with that. So it's not to say that they can't have a modern design that's cool and appeases the fan base. But I still go back to like this guy, the vest with the white stripes. This is probably still. The ice cream man. The ice cream man.
Starting point is 00:12:10 This is probably my favorite. A lot of iconic things happen in this jersey. I know like when they do do a throwback Thursday or a, you know, wear old jerseys typically. It's this one. But I also love the old black one. This is the one that was talking about with the accents on the sleeve
Starting point is 00:12:25 that had the teal and the purple and the copper. When I see people walking around Chase Field wearing this one, it still looks gorgeous. It is like eye-catching. All the accents, everything, it looks. I've said at times there's this transition that teams make after they win a championship where their jersey can have little things added to it
Starting point is 00:12:47 that make them look like champions, right? Little gold, little copper, things like that. And that jersey always reminds me of that great period. Okay. You and I differ greatly in part because I do not like the A logo. Oh, that is crazy. On a uniform. I love it on a hat.
Starting point is 00:13:04 I don't like it on a uniform. All right. What do you got? I have the red Diamondbacks jersey that just came out. At first, I was not sure about this, and I have fallen in love with this uniform. It's one of the few red uniforms that you don't feel like you look like the Kool-Aid man when you're out there. That's for sure. It's that Sedona Red.
Starting point is 00:13:24 But you're right. I mean, this is one that when we saw it last year, I was like, wow, that's a lot of letters on the front there. That is a lot to take in. But on the guys, it looks great. And yeah, it ended up being like, this is what I was saying with the City Connect, where even if it's radical on at first, you might not like it, seeing it on the players, seeing what it looks like, you know, playing baseball. It's a whole different feel. And I always hated the D-backs on the jersey. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:50 I never liked it. I love the full dime back name. That I can understand. The next one I love is the black Arizona with the teal and purple outline on the sleeves, the Arizona and purple with that A with the fang. This was one. I always loved the touch of gray in the pants, you know, and that D logo on the cap. I love those.
Starting point is 00:14:12 But the next one, I don't think anybody would ever pick. But this was actually kind of a batting practice uniform that they wore that said diamondbacks in that old script with it. And there was something I liked about this and always kind of wished I had seen it on the field in this iteration outside of BP. Yeah, because I think I have like a white pinstripe jersey that they wore right in the first season that had that logo across the front. And I felt like they never tried to use that logo very, very much. No, I can see why. It's a lot going on there, but I always like it. I still like it.
Starting point is 00:14:47 I think especially like, again, with time, you're like, I really like that one, but it's because it didn't get used very much. Yeah, the coup de grace, though, my favorite of all time, bringing back the purple conversation. It was the all purple with Arizona and teal across the chest. It had that like, it was almost a gold or copper outline there with the purple A hat and the pinstriped white pants. Look at how magnificent. a scent that looks. I actually, you know, I was joking about the grimmest thing, but I actually hope that this is kind of what they do with the teal instead of, instead of the green that they had back in the day. Something like this could be a unique way to do a city connect. Give me this. Give me the sleeves because that, again, there's stuff like that, the little accents. Those are the things that like, even the Serpiantish jersey that they have now, that's what it's missing. Like those other teams have these little like, like, oh, hey, the Mets use like the, you know, subway line behind it. And like, there's just little nods to the city that I appreciate as a guy that buys very busy shirts, as most people know.
Starting point is 00:15:54 And I love like, I love the little, like just those little pieces that give it that flare and make it a little different. Give me that, maybe that purple. Give me the, you know, hat and the pants that match. They're both pinstriped or something like that. Like, I'm on board with that and I don't miss that. I don't hate that at all. No, like, I think there's a way to do purple right if it's the primary color in a jersey. Sure.
Starting point is 00:16:19 And I hope that they go with the darker, not a light or too bright of a purple, but I hope they bring it back in a unique way. And I think, like you mentioned, we're going to find out soon enough, as Derek Call said, it'll come up in spring training. So we want to know what your favorite dime back's jersey of all time is. And if you want purple back with these new city connect uniforms, tell us in the comments. He is Derek Monti to follow him at Cap Caveman, right, on the X? Cap underscore Caveman on the X. All right. I always forget the underscore.
Starting point is 00:16:54 The underscore is there because, you know, the mayor always needs to make it special. And then you can follow me at Espo. And we'll talk to you next time here on Southwest Bias.
