We got a WBC rematch today between Eduardo Rodriguez and Nolan McLean
and the finale between the DBAX and the Mets.
But more importantly, you know what we have?
We have Corbyn Carroll.
And we're going to talk about his first 500 major league games.
Let's do it right.
To another edition of the PHNX Dback podcast,
presented by our good friends in Circle K.
Welcome in you guys.
My name is Derek Montia occasionally as your mayor of PHN.
We'll have you guys here and thrilled to be.
talking about this Arizona Diamondbacks team. I am not alone. I'm joined here by all my toys
and Jesse Jr. And of course, we got your dog and my dog, Damon Dog, aka Damon Farrell.
On the ones and twos today, bark, bark to you, Damon. And I know you guys have some exciting
things, what seems like always going on over there in the Wildcats world. But things are pretty
good over here. I mean, they could be better. Don't get me wrong. We are tied with the Colorado
Rockies for second place.
the National League West. So that doesn't feel great. However, I will say, you know, credit to that
Rockies team for taking care of business against a tough Astros team and sweeping them. Again, that's
going to be a tough matchup when the Diamondbacks eventually lock up with the Rockies. But the Diamondbacks
have one more game today against the New York Mets and hopefully they can close out the series
strong in the finale and take the series here two out of three. But this isn't just a regular April
pitching matchup.
Boys and Girls. This is a rematch of the
2026 World Baseball Classic Final, of course.
But this show, this is the PHNXDBAC show.
This is brought to you by our friends at Bet365.

We got Eduardo Rodriguez here.
again, on the mound, and ever since that championship game in the World Baseball Classic,
it's been pretty damn good. In fact, Erod has not allowed a single earned run since that championship
game. The game against Dominican Republic didn't go as well for him, but again, in that championship
matchup, Erod went four in a third innings pitched, gave up one single hit, no earned runs,
he walked one, and struck out four. And on the other side of the mound from him, on the other side of
of this matchup was won Nolan McLean.
And of course, Erod got the better of him in that game.
Venezuela won three to two to take the Crown WBC Championship.
Nolan McLean, though, had a very similar day to Erod.
I mean, you know, he did have a few more mistakes and a few more runs allowed.
But four and two-thirds innings in that game for Nolan, four hits, two earn runs, one walk, 4K.
Still a fine outing, but overall, a very, very close game between those two teams.
and Eduardo Rodriguez just seems to be riding the WBC momentum, right?
It felt like he stepped up big for that game.
He even discussed it in the clubhouse, I think, after his last start.
But, you know, he basically said that the game against the Dominican Republic made him learn that he needed to maybe stop going to his fastball so much.
And, you know, Eduardo Rodriguez's fastball definitely is not his strongest.
pitch by any stretch of the imagination.
So it feels like the fact that he's kind of gone away from it a bit here and kind of leaning more on his breaking pitches has been a big part of his success.
He has a zero ERA through two starts so far in 12 innings pitched.
He has one run allowed, but no earn runs charged to him.
And he has a 0.917 whip.
Fairly incredible.
He's only allowed eight hits total in those two starts.
And again, he basically picked right up.
where he left off in the WBC.
And it's kind of wild to me because, you know,
that that's a very erratic beginning to the season for a pitcher overall.
And instead, I feel like it's sharpened the sword a bit there for Erod.
Let's take a look here.
We have his baseball savonk page for 2026 so far.
And, of course, it's a very small sample size.
We're not going to get crazy.
But through two games, it's a lot of red damon.
That is a lot of red.
And in fact, the areas that aren't red are areas that we know that the diamondbacks have somewhat,
um,
are not focusing on as much.
His whiff rate isn't great.
It's in the 30th percentile.
His strikeout rate is not great.
It's in the 27th percentile.
But his walk rate is good.
Uh, 6.5 percent walks, uh, 0.0 barrels.
He's in the 77th percentile for barrels.
72nd percentile for walks, but expected ERA there outstanding, all things considered.
I mean, I know his actual ERA is 0.00, but even his expected stats put him in the 86th percentile there for, you know, expected ERA at 2.27.
So he has been better than his expected stats.
He's got, he's had some good defense behind him.
And, you know, you can tell that in the two games that he's started,
he and the team stepped up defensively.
I mean, it's two starts against the Dodgers and the Braves,
two of the best teams right now in the National League.
And Erod was able to hold both of those teams scoreless.
So, I mean, he's been doing some great stuff.
I think the biggest thing here in regards to that baseball savant page
is his average exit velocity is in the 83rd percentile.
Right.
So what Erod has been doing this year has been getting,
a lot of soft contact. His command has been leading the soft contact and that has been elite early on.
And again, he's dominated strong lineups. So you feel like he's kind of becoming that big, big game
arm that the Diamondbacks went out and acquired in the 2023 off season, that big game arm that we
really have not seen at any point from Erod in his tenure with the Diamondbacks. But I will also defend
to Rod because of the fact that, you know, we've known he's injured.
We've known he's kind of been playing hurt.
It's been for, you know, his entire tenure here as a Diamondback, essentially.
So he's had some nagging injuries, some sort of thing that kept him, you know, missing time.
The Diamondbacks tried to do their best to give him, you know, a full recovery period.
But let's be honest.
2024 and 2025 both were awful seasons for this team, considering how close they came to the postseason
and didn't make it.
You could definitely see a sense of urgency to get Erod back in both of those seasons as soon as possible,
considering how short-handed they were on starting pitching.
But it would appear that this version of E-Rod, this healthy version of E-Rod,
is the one that we thought we were getting when we paid $80 million for them over four seasons.
Now the Diamondbacks, again, we have another big game here,
chance to, you know, avoid getting, avoid a losing series and essentially winning or tying every
series that they've played except that opening series against the Dodgers.
But Noel McLean has been electric for the Mets.
And he has a 2.61 ERA this year, 12 strikeouts in 10 and a third innings pitched, and he has a 0.871
whip.
So he's had himself a great season as well.
over his career he has a 2.16 ERA across his first 10 MLB starts and just a real strong strikeout
percentage. So the Diamondbacks have to be careful of that. I'm not sure exactly how to combat that.
He does have a powerful arsenal and a high strikeout floor. So the Diamondbacks basically have to
do their best in today's game to go out there and make him work, drive up that pitch count,
do everything they can to get him out of the game as soon as possible because he is going to be a guy
that's going to go for a lot of strikeouts.
Meanwhile, like we said,
overall here with the Diamondbacks pitching staff,
it feels like Erod's success is trending in the direction
that a lot of their pitchers are trending,
which is not putting up these huge strikeout numbers
and not putting up overpowering numbers,
however, putting up a lot of zeros
and a lot of innings pitched.
So, I mean, again, hopefully we'll see more of that today from EROD,
but this is a statement spot overall,
I feel like for both of these teams.
The Mets are very short-handed.
So the Mets have their own share of injury concerns to deal with, as do the Diamondbacks.
But again, this is as far as a National League matchup and, you know, just again, what this could do for the confidence of the snakes here in this month where they have a very, very difficult schedule ahead of them, feels like this is important.
And today's game could, you know, be that thing that pushes them a little further there.
but another thing that might push them a little further is heraldo prodomo's production it would be
great to see prodomo getting some hits he has been very productive regardless he's still being he's been
getting on base he's been doing a lot of the things you know of course that um perdomo does but we're just
not seeing much success as far as the power is concerned and just really not getting a ton of hits
overall. His on-base percentage is 277. His slug is 308 and his OPS is 584. But on the good news,
Perdomo now has 43 consecutive plate appearances without a strikeout, which that dates back to
March 27th against the Dodgers in the third inning. And that is the longest active streak in
Major League Baseball. You believe that? Perdomo, our special guy, longest active streak in baseball.
Damon. Shocker. I'm not. It's not a shocker, but it is the second time he's done that,
did it last year between April 3rd and April 13th. And if he gets one more plate appearance,
he will have the most in team history, early since 2015, not in team history, but
Ender in Ciarte back in 2015 had 44 plate appearances in a row without a strikeout.
So Pardomo is gunning for that.
But again, the lineup overall today for the Diamondbacks isn't their strongest.
And I'm sure some of you have already seen that won Corbyn Carroll, not in the lineup today.
We got Marte leading off.
We got Ildemarovar Vargas playing first base and batting second in place of Carroll,
which that seems like a good move with the way Vargy's been hitting the ball lately.
So I don't hate Bargis being put into the second slot,
but I do hate Corbyn Carroll after playing his 500th career game
at a major league level being set.
But we got Perdomo in the three hole.
We got Del Castillo, D.Hing.
He'll be hitting fourth.
We got Jose Fernandez, Damon, playing third base today,
and he will be hitting fifth overall.
We got James McCann behind the plate hitting sixth.
We got Alec Thomas in center field,
Tim Tawa in left field,
Verosa and right field.
So there's that.
Interesting lineup today.
Definitely something different.
Hopefully this is the kind of thing that can get things going.
I kind of love Vargas and Fernandez hitting earlier up in the lineup like that,
considering what those guys have been doing and what they did just yesterday.
So we will, of course, have another show for you guys tomorrow.
No post game show tonight.
But I will be recording an audio-only podcast, a version of DeBacks Recap.
So I will be giving my thoughts after this game.
So make sure you're subscribed to our audio channel for that.
And of course, like I said, we'll be back tomorrow with our Friday postgame show.
But we're going to take a quick break.
And on the other side of this break, we are going to talk about the guy who's not in the lineup today,
but a guy who has given us so many memories and so many moments already in his young career,
Corbyn Carroll and his 500 major league games.
We're going to do that on the other side of this break.
Don't you go anywhere.
You're watching the PHA next time in Back show.

Well, Zabe in our chat, the legend, Zabe asks, how many layers do I need to wear to
tonight's game?
By the way, Zabe and I were wearing the same Cite National League All-Star Jersey on
the same day the other day.
So we are kindred spirits.
We are locked.
We are locked in.
but I'm going to say based on the weather report,
tonight's game at first pitch, Damon,
looks like it's going to be 44 degrees Fahrenheit.
And I am going to go out on a limb and say
that you're going to need four layers of clothing,
how many layers you're going to need,
three upon entry to the stadium
and one additional one that you will need to apply
as the evening goes on
and you reach a low temperature eventually of like 34 degrees.
My God.
Summer.
I mean, we could have a long discussion about,
would you rather be trapped at a baseball game during a 110 degree day outside?
Or would you rather be trapped at a baseball game during a 40 degree day outside?
I mean, a lot of people are going to think we're crazy for saying that, Derek,
because a lot of people, that's a no-brainer.
Give them the 40-degree day over the 100.
I don't know.
Ours is inside.
I don't love it.
I don't love the idea.
I know people get mad about the air conditioning.
Our stadium is inside.
It's still like 80 something degrees in there.
That's fair.
It's way more comfortable.
Except on opening day.
Damon, it was so hot I had to go stand in the stairwell.
I have a secret stairwell spot that now is not so secret.
Now I'm telling everybody.
Air conditioning flows like it flows like a river back there.
It's amazing.
It's ice cold.
I don't know why.
it's not getting into the rest of the building,
but I know that when I need to cool off
because I'm crammed into the press box
like some sardines, right in between two Alexes,
what are the odds of that?
It's like the odds of me and Espo wearing
the same goddamn shirt on the same day.
Espo and I collectively have 9,000 pieces of clothing
between the two of us,
and we somehow wore the same shirt on the same day?
That's outrageous.
It's outrageous.
Anyway, it's very cold there.
I don't love it.
And I will say that when it comes to the heat,
I did experience an opening day,
like a suffocating kind of heat.
But that was, again, I think that was more due to bodies in the stadium.
It was a pack day.
You're not going to get that unless it's a Dodgers game
or a bobblehead giveaway.
By the way, we are going to talk about in this episode,
the best giveaways from around Major League Baseball.
And Diamondbacks have a well-rounded lineup,
but I might disagree with MLB's assessment of what the best giveaway item for the Diamondbacks this year is.
But first, we have to talk about our homegrown Wonderboy.
We have now experienced 500 Major League games of Corbyn Carroll.
Corbyn Carroll is the fifth Major League Baseball player this season with three or more
extra base hits in a game and was the last Arizona Diamondback to do so after yesterday's
two double and one triple output.
Again, he's off today, which sucks.
That sucks.
It sucks for this narrative that I'm going into here, but maybe he deserves it with how he's
played over the last 500 games.
That was the 13th time in franchise history that a deback has collected two or more
doubles and one or more triple in a game, and it was the first time a Diamondback has done
it since Jake Lamb accomplished that feat back in 2017.
But Corby and Carroll, it makes history.
He has made a lot of history in these 500 games.
He now has 46 career triples in those 500 games,
which is tied with David Peralta for second most in franchise history
and is six back from Stephen Drew,
who has 56 or 52 triples in his story.
career. Crazy thing is it took Stephen Drew 773 games to do that. It took David Peralta
9161 games to get 46, which is nearly double of the 500 games that Corbyn Carroll. It's
taking Corby and Carol to get here. Catele-Marté has 38 triples and he's played 166 games.
And then you had Tony Womack rounding out the list at fifth in franchise history with 37
triple. So Corby and Carroll is going to blow past Stephen Drew. He's going to do it this season.
And he's going to set the all-time franchise record for most triples in a career. He's probably
going to set the all-time franchise record for triples in a season. And it's just one of the
pile of accolades that Corby and Carroll has already racked up in his career. I mean,
his resume is stacked. National League rookie of the year in 20,
Unanimous winner and the first Diamondback in history to win the Rookie of the Year award.
He's a two-time All-Star, and he got to appear in front of his home city of Seattle in his first All-Star appearance.
Like, it's storybook almost for Corbyn Carroll, the way things have gone.
You know, even the injuries somehow just add to his legacy and his legend, especially this Haymate Bone thing.
Like, it's crazy.
By the way, I did confirm with Corbyn Care, I'll know if I said it on here, but I'd asked him if he had used that axe handle bat in any actual regular season games.
And he said he didn't.
He said he stopped using it beforehand.
But it was something that helped him get his swing back and got back to, you know, the hitter that we know he can be far earlier than we expected him to be that coming back from that injury.
Not to mention the fact that he was back in record time as far as recovery is concerned.
and has a relentless work ethic that I feel like I saw more this past offseason than I've ever seen from Corbyn.
It's easy to go out to spring training and see these guys working hard.
That's not the question.
Everybody's working hard.
Everybody's doing drills.
Everybody's doing the little fundamentals that gets you right for the season.
But you're typically doing it in groups with your teammates, with coaches, participating with a lot of other people.
Corbyn due to his injury was not part of really of any of that.
And what I saw from him was him doing it independently out there at Salt River Fields.
And I mean, again, based on his injury and what he was able to do, he never stopped.
He never stopped working at something.
Whether it was base running, whether it was him throwing with his non-injured hand, it didn't matter.
Like, Corbyn was just out there every single day putting in that work.
and you just saw a different level of commitment and frustration, honestly, too,
because he had already been putting in this work prior to camp beginning.
He wanted to be ahead of the curve, you know, when players reported.
And instead he experiences this injury and it proved to be at least at the time a big setback,
but not necessarily, you know, a huge stepback for his season.
You know, Debra asks a great question.
says how many would have done what he has. And I don't know. I really don't know. I feel like it's,
I don't feel like it's super unique. But I also think that sometimes players experience an injury and
and, you know, again, they're told what they want them to do. And maybe not every single player is
going to maybe fire back with, okay, fine, I can't do anything with that hand. What can't I do? And then
find out what you can do or at least have a fundamental understanding of what you can do.
It's not like it's that hard.
Can't do anything with this hand, right?
But again, it's just a small example of the kind of machine that Corbyn Carol is, the legend that he's already become for this Diamondbacks team.
Cotell Marte is probably going to quickly here become one of the greatest Diamondbacks of all time.
But Damon and I were talking about it before the show.
And you could argue that that might be true for a small period,
but it feels like Corbyn Carroll is going to soar past him.
And by the end of his career will be by far one of the greatest position players,
if not the greatest position player, to ever put on a Diamondbacks uniform.
He was all MLB first team in 2023.
He won a Silver Slugger Award yesterday.
He's the first rookie in MLB history with a 20 home run, 50 stolen base season.
He's the only player ever with a 25 plus home run, 50-plus stolen plus, 50-plus stolen base, 10-plus-triple, and 25-plus double season.
And he's the first Diamondbacks in franchise history to have a 30-30 season.
And one of very few players to have 20, 10, and 30 in a season as well.
He has three straight 20-plus home-run seasons from 23 to 25, and he has 100-plus runs scored in those three.
seasons as well. He was the NL triples leader multiple years and will be probably again this year
and you know career best home run numbers last year in 2025. This one comes from our guys over
at Dback stats and info, but here is Corbyn ranked in the National League amongst qualified players
just this season. He's tied for 10th for runs. He's tied for ninth for hits. He's tied for second for
extra base hits with eight. He's tied for seventh overall with RBI. He has 11 RBI. He has a 333
batting average, which is tied for eighth best. He has a 338 expected batting average, which is
third best in Major League Baseball, a 408 on base percentage, which is 10th best, a 690 slug,
which is the best in Major League Baseball. He has a 439 XWOBA. He has a 1098 OPS, which is third
best, the XWOBA with sixth best. It's tied.
For third or fourth overall total bases with 29 total bases and his sprint speed at 29.7 miles.
What was?
Did we just have a squeak?
The squeaking for Corbyn.
His sprint speeds tied or his third best in Major League Baseball.
Corbyn is just one of the most incredible baseball players we've ever seen.
And it has been how he kind of has evolved throughout his career.
That's been the most impressive thing.
I mean, I actually disagree with that.
I think that he, it's the most impressive thing is how nuts he was from the get-go.
Yeah, no, that's true.
He was insane from the moment that he joined the Diamondbacks.
And it was very, very clear and obvious how much of a superstar we had on our hands.
I just mean, Corbyn Carol from the jump.
Corbyn has always had this thing where even back then, right?
He had that injury that he experienced with his shoulder that prevented, that kept him, you know,
that made him miss time as a minor leaguer.
And somehow even during that time, he found a way to get better by sitting with scouts
and learning more about the game of baseball.
He had a...
So you're just, you're just, you're getting flowery is basically what you're saying.
What's that?
You're trying to be a little flowery about it.
Well, you know, he's, he's always, he's always working on his craft.
He's always, he's throwing the ball against the brick wall when his hands hurt.
Playa wall.
Okay.
Go ahead.
That was all I had.
No, no, no.
Well, no.
What I'm saying is, is that, like, again, there was, there, there, there wasn't this
big of expectations for Corbyn Carroll as a player.
It's the reason why he wasn't drafted higher.
He was a top 10 pick and a first rounder, brother.
He was not a top 10 pick.
Or a top 10 prospect and a first rounder.
He was a first rounder.
Correct.
I'm just talking about in general when he was drafted.
I'm talking about when he was drafted by this team.
And overall, Corbyn has, why are you?
you guys should see the look he's giving me.
I just don't really understand what you're saying.
Oh my God.
Yeah, like what was he like 17th overall pick in the draft?
No one believed in him.
I'm not saying no one believed in it.
I'm just saying no one expected him to be this level of a baseball player.
I remember when the Diamondbacks drafted him.
This was like yet again another fast, small, scrappy player,
not a guy that was going to come in and have the power that Corby has had and had it from
right away.
Like you said, his rookie season, he was already kind of,
showing numbers that are or putting up numbers that were above expectations because again
there was like kind of like a smaller lead off hitter kind of expectation that was going to be
fast on the base path and get a lot of stolen bases.
I don't think anybody expected Corby and Carroll to be this well-rounded of a player.
Yeah, he has more power than maybe people would have expected going into his career.
But he clearly had a ton of pop in his game given that he was a first round pick, I guess.
That was more my...
Yeah, no, I'm not trying to act like a first-round pick isn't a first, you know, isn't a player that a lot of people see it.
That it was, that was being presented to me.
I was like, I don't know, man.
I thought Corbyn Carroll is kind of the most hype prospect that we've had from a position player standpoint since I can really remember.
I would disagree about that just based on covering this team at that time.
But there was excitement around him.
Don't get me wrong.
What other top 10 prospect position player have we had?
Jordan Lawler?
Stephen Drew, Jordan Lawler.
But Jordan Lawler didn't have Corbyn Carroll expectations, I don't think at least.
I don't know.
People are very excited about them, but people have been excited about their graphics for a while now.
You know, but again, Corbyn is the one that helps to make that, you know, that excitement, that expectation.
I mean, even right now, we expect, like, our young players to come up and make that same leap that Corbyn Carroll has.
and we are kind of seeing that.
It's just not Corbyn Carroll.
You know, Corbyn Carroll is a very,
he's a very unique player when it comes to how quickly he adapted to major league baseball,
how quickly he moved through the minor league system
considering that injury that he experienced,
and just everything he's done to continue getting better year after year, right?
And especially there in the minor league system,
he didn't need much time to prove,
to everyone that he could play at a major league level.
Jose Fernandez might be something similar.
I would also say Geraldo Pardomo,
considering that there's one guy in this room
that believed in him and his ability to be what he was last year
the whole time, but not a lot of people did.
And there's others in this chat that are willing to give up on him, Derek.
Oh, yeah, there's people, there's, uh, what, I won't name names, but I-
Snitchamist Rex.
It's just, I've just been told that like we were all out on Catea when we were like,
you know, it's not exactly chill, taking vacations in the middle of the MLB regular season.
But then 11 games into an MLB season, you're trying to get rid of the captain of the team because he hasn't been great.
I mean, he's still been okay.
Yeah.
He hasn't been terrible.
He just hasn't been what he was last year so far.
And there's a lot of baseball left.
100%.
But you could argue so have a lot of people offensively on this team.
Corbyn Carroll has had a fast start, though.
again, he's already hitting 333, which is tied for the eighth best batting average in baseball.
But I think that, you know, again, I don't know, you know, maybe it's just baseball prospects and all of that, Damon.
But like, I don't know if anybody even considered Corbyn Carroll to be a potential Hall of Famer.
And that's what he's turning into, you know.
Yeah.
But with prospects, it's almost like those guys that you do think are going to.
going to have that career. Don't, you know, and then it's somebody that you don't expect to have
that career. In fact, yeah, like, you're right. This isn't a Paul Goldschmidt situation where the
Diamondbacks drafted him, you know, way late. And then he ends up becoming the best player on the team.
True. This is very different than that. But it does feel like, like there are, you know, there are
guys that are, you know, kind of hyped up to be these big time players. And a lot of times they just end up
being pretty decent players. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Which is, which is funny because it's like,
That's still good.
It's still hard to be an average major league player, right?
No doubt.
But you do see those guys that become just an average major league player.
I'm not saying Corbyn didn't have a hype behind him,
but I will say that Corbyn was definitely viewed as being more of a, again,
I don't know a good comp.
I guess Ender Enciarte is kind of a good comp.
Just like one of those guys that in general gets a lot of hits,
gets a lot of base hits, has a good on-base percentage,
A lot of stolen bases shows that speed, right?
I'm sure the goal for Corbyn was like, we want him to hit like 15 to 20 home runs a year.
Oh, yeah, that would have been great.
He came here and surpassed that and smashed the expectation on that.
Obviously, he's more of a 2530 home run a year guy, which is, you know, makes Corbyn Carroll the player that he is.
But I do think that there was, it was very early on in his, you know, minor league career where you were like, oh, he just has it.
Like where he's hitting the baseball.
and you're seeing all the home run and all the power numbers and you're like, and he's how tall and he's that fast.
And that was kind of what I was talking about of like once he got to the miners and started playing baseball tangibly on the field, it seems like his rise as a prospect was fast.
It was.
It was.
He's going to be a superstar.
And he's shown up and he's met those expectations and exceeded them even, which is pretty special to see.
because it's not often you get to see that.
Like, you talk about the Hall of Fame type of, you know,
players that they have that expectation put on them.
That's what makes like a Bryce Harper so impressive is that he was given that.
Very true.
And then he lived up to it.
And then he lived up to it.
And he has been overrated at times because of that in his career.
But he's still a Hall of Fame caliber player.
And that's pretty special to have that expectation placed on you and become that.
And I think Corbyn Carroll, like, not to the same extent, but like, he was a top 10 prospect.
And he's shown up and he's become.
a top 10 hitter in the sport.
Yeah.
And that is special.
Groundhog Mama brings up he did get a contract very early.
And yeah, even when he got that contract extension, it felt good that the Diamondbacks
did that.
And it didn't feel like it was an overspend.
No.
It felt like a great deal, a great contract.
Yeah.
It felt like you're getting out ahead of it.
It did.
But it did also feel a little bit like what some people might feel about like this
Connor Griffin contract where like it's early.
You're really giving this, this.
this early and again that's the reason why is because they saw everything yeah damon's talking about they're
there every day yeah and i mean how he works they know they know the person like all of that stuff and if
you believe in the person and the player then it makes given a contract like that that much easier yeah
i mean i i think corbin's longest tenure was with the sod poodles and it wasn't even that long
it was just you know a lot of good memories especially for our guys stephen and chris carey
of being there and calling him when he was there.
But again,
Corman's just such an incredibly important player,
and we should be very thankful that he is a member of the Diamondbacks.
I mean, it does feel a little bit like, you know,
we're spoiled with the caliber player that the debacks do have.
He's not the only guy like this.
I mean, he's very prototypical,
but you also have Cotel Marte and Geraldo Pardomo,
and on all three of these guys share very similar traits
when it comes to what makes them a success.
Ability to get on base, ability to still hit for power, speed, stolen bases, you know, all of that.
And I think that, again, if these three guys can get right, this offense will be fine.
Right now, they're not all right.
It tells Midland, Perdomo's underperforming, but Corbyn is still getting the job done.
So if we can get, let's get these other two guys up here contributing, and hopefully we can see this team have more success.
than just being a 500 baseball club.
You've got to be very encouraged about what the pitching has done for this team so far.
So that is one thing that we can at least be excited about.
But we're going to take a quick break.
And on the other side of this break, we're going to talk about some of those youngsters
that remind me very much of Corby and Carroll,
guys that we are excited to see make their debut, perhaps even this season.
We're going to do it on the other side of this break.

Well, the Reno Aces had a comeback last night that was reminiscent of some things the
Diamondbacks did last season.
They were down by a score of eight to three at the most.
I believe that was in the fifth inning when the Aces roared back to beat the Salt
Lake Bs by a score of 14 to 8.
and a big catalyst in that comeback was one.
Lou James Gruver, who had himself a big night.
Four aces, in fact, closed the night with multiple hits,
led by Grover, who was three for five with six RBI on the night.
In the eighth inning,
Grover crushed a two-two pitch out to left field
for a grand slam representing the first AAA home run of his young career.
He was three for four with two runs scored,
a double, a grand slam and six RBI.
D.H. Jack Hurley was two for four with two runs, a double, a triple, and a strikeout.
And then Christian Robinson continues to be good, very good at a AAA level.
Two for three, a triple, an RBI, and two walks.
But let's take a look at some of our favorite youngsters there on another edition here of Snake Farm.
Damon, if we would mind, let's take a look at what our guys are doing.
And, of course, we got probably our three.
most important players, you would argue, outside of any pitchers.
Lou James Groover, Tommy Troy, and Ryan Walschmidt.
Grover is continuing to just do amazing things at the plate.
Currently has a 375 batting average, a 434 on base percentage, a 913 OPS, and he has
12 RBI this season.
Tommy Troy, meanwhile, still has a great batting average, 326.
Not great on base percentage at 388.
I guess he's doing the majority of his hit or on-base activity through hits.
760 OPS for him and 4 RBI.
Meanwhile, Walschmidt there, he has been struggling a little bit with his batting average.
He's hitting 238, but I found this really interesting that his on-base percentage and his OPS both higher than Tommy Troyes.
He has a 396 on-base percentage and a 777 OPS.
He has 10 walks in 11 games.
Just showing some real good plate discipline there for a youngster and eight RBI this season.
But these are the guys who are going to perhaps be the next line of defense for the Diamondbacks.
Should they need to call anybody up similar to what's happened with Jose Fernandez?
But man, you can't say enough about Jose.
It's great stuff.
By the way, there's one combined home run between these three guys.
and it was Lou James
Grand Slam last night.
That's not so great, considering that it's AAA Reno,
Damon. You would love to see a little bit more power
from those guys. However, again,
just kind of like what I was saying with Corbyn.
I don't really feel like any of those guys
are the guys that you necessarily expect
to see a lot of power from.
But in the PCL, I feel like you can just flick your wrist
a little extra hard and you'll hit one out.
I mean, definitely not Tommy Troy. That's not a power bat.
For sure.
But I think you want to.
want to see some power out of Walschman and Lou James Gruver just given, like you said,
that it's in Reno and that like if they're projectable major league hitters,
they should be hypothetically putting the ball over the fence and triple at.
Yeah, I mean, and this almost kind of reminds me a little bit.
It's early in the season, so I'm not going to freak out about it, right?
Yeah.
And it also reminds me a little bit of what we've been talking about with, you know,
with some of these pitchers for the Diamondbacks on the major league roster.
Perhaps the focus is just more about making contact and getting hits,
getting on base rather than it is about the power.
And I mean,
like you said,
sometimes you flick it and it flies over the fence.
Like I'm actually,
I was actually surprised to see that when I was looking up their stats,
that those guys only have one home run collectively between the two of them, right?
Or the three of them,
excuse me.
Meanwhile,
our guy Jose Fernandez had two home runs in a single game.
And that's why we love him.
And he is already a Diamondbacks legend himself.
It's funny because you brought up Corbyn Carroll's like,
stature, his size and things like that.
Jose Fernandez is probably as opposite from that as, as you can get.
Just looking at him that he looks like, even at just 22 years old,
he looks like a full-on major leaguer ready to be here and looks like a grown ass man.
But he's putting up grown ass man numbers right now for the time being in 20 played appearances.
He has four RBI, those two home runs.
He struck out five times.
He's slashing 300, 300, 300.
Slugging's great.
Batting average is great.
On base percentage, not so great.
He has not walked one time this year.
He has a 900 OPS and he has an OPS plus of 148.
Make sure Jose Fernandez is in the lineup.
Start him every day.
Start that man.
I start that man.
I mean, until it doesn't work, until the wheels fall off, start him.
I am starting him every day.
every day until his batting average drops down to 150.
And it's not going to because he's an elite player.
And this is just the beginning of yet another youngster for the Diamondbacks that's going
to prosper at a major league level, blossom and look amazing.
I might be getting a little ahead of myself.
But it's hard not to get excited about him.
We were sitting around in the office yesterday just singing, Jose, Jose, Jose, Jose, Jose.
and then there was like, what was it, Damon?
A hip, hip Jose in there, I think.
We were getting crazy in this office.
We were very excited about Jose Fernandez.
Oh, yeah, we were doing both, all of the above.
All of the Jose puns you could come up with.
Every single one of them.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But, hey.
It was honestly moments that I don't know if I'm too proud of, Derek.
It's not like we were really reaching into the bag on those ones.
We were going right off the cuff.
Meanwhile, I commended us so much and said, we're just the best.
I was so excited about what it was that we were putting together there.
I'm excited about what he's putting together.
And again, I don't care if he has an O for four day because it still feels like defensively he's able to make some great plays.
We've seen him lay down a bunt.
We've seen him do a lot of different things.
And I think most importantly, he is a guy that puts pressure on the defense because even a groundout can turn into a hit with his speed.
So Jose Fernandez, again, he is one of the guys that we would still be talking about being a snake farm participant.
but we're not because already he's made a big impression on this organization, on this front office, on this coaching staff, and should be starting in more games than he is starting in right now, quite frankly.
So great stuff from Jose Fernandez and hopefully he can have a big impact on today's game there in New York.
So we are going to take a quick break and on the other side of this break, we have one more thing to talk about and I can't wait to get to it.
we are going to talk about the best giveaway items across baseball.
MLB put together a list of the best items for each team.
I have a lot of disagreements there when it comes to it because I was cycling through
some of the team's giveaway ads.
There's some pretty awesome crap out there.
I'm shocked that Derek has thoughts and opinions on this.
Oh, I have thoughts and opinions on giveaways.
I mean, come on, I rank the Diamondbacks best five giveaways in team history.
So we're going to do that on the other side of this break.
Don't you guys go anywhere.
watching the pH next diamond back show.
Well, here's hoping that you never need the husband and wife law team services and hoping
you're never involved in the serious accident or injury.
But if you are, you need to contact the husband and wife law team first.
The lawyer you hire does matter and you want to ensure that the lawyer that you hire is
thinking of your best needs, not the how much the firm is going to make or their best interests.
This team brings hundreds of years of combined trial experience and they have multiple
certified specialists and personal injury and wrongful death.
And in the state of Arizona, the state bar is certified less than 1% of all lawyers as specialists in injury and wrongful death litigation, making them experts in the field.
They also go to trial.
They know what needs to be done in a courtroom to prevail in front of a jury, and they are ready to go to trial for you if they need to.
They also can't guarantee the outcome of any case, but they can make promises to you as their client, including that you can cancel your fee agreement with them at any time for any reason.
you'll receive as much in pocket as they receive for their fee,
even if they have to reduce their attorney fees to do so.
And you may speak with one of their lawyers as often as you choose
about anything you want to discuss,
especially if it's the Arizona Diamondback.
So if you've had a serious injury,
call the husband and wife law team first at 602-783-8841
or visit their website at the link in our show notes
and tell them the mayor of PHNX sent you.

Michael Dixon in the chat says, I've gone to a few other stadiums and gotten some cool giveaways, always fun.
I don't think there's anything that makes a trip to a game more fun than giving a giveaway item for free, no matter how preposterous it is.
Could be a dumb thing, and I'm still going to be excited about it.
In fact, I still to this day, remember how magical of an afternoon Megaran and I had when we went to Wrigley Field.
And afterwards, like it was a giveaway day.
They were giving away bobbleheads for their announcers, JD and Boo.
for the Marquis Network.
And I didn't know what it was,
but I saw people had one, and I was jealous.
And then after the game, we were leaving,
and after I, oddly enough, walked and chatted with Sarah Spain,
I ran into this family who had like a half a dozen of the bobbleheads.
And I simply just asked him because I hadn't had a chance to see what it was up to that point.
What was the bobblehead?
The guy didn't hesitate.
He just grabbed one out of his bag and gave it to me and said,
here and a tear fell from my eye and I have loved the city of Chicago ever since for the
kindness that they exhibited to me but that's what a giveaway item will do to you giveaway item
will change you as a person and there are some great MLB giveaway items around the league of course
we know there's always going to be a very repetitive amount of things right like MLB.com
put together their list of the best items for each team and
of course a ton of them were bobbleheads of some shape or form. And I love a good bobblehead. You know that.
I want an entire case of the Gabby Moreno Mandalorian bobbleheads, an entire case. And I will give them to friends and family for gifts.
I think that's the greatest bobblehead that I'm back to have all season long. But I will say that there's some very cool giveaways around baseball.
And I did just want to highlight a few of them before we wrapped up today.
One thing I've seen, Damon, statues.
There are a lot of commemorative statues being given out based on a statue thing being put up.
I think there's a Todd Hilton statue by the Rockies.
But I thought this was pretty cool.
The Tigers to celebrate the 125th anniversary of their inaugural season in the American League back in 1901.
They're offering special ticket packages that include miniature replicas of the statues that they have outside of the stadium honoring Tiger Greats,
such as Hank Greenberg, Ty Cobb, Willie Horton, Hal Neuhauser, Charlie, Garenger, and Al Kalene.
So they have a lot of legends from that organization over their number of years of history.
And that's, I think that's pretty cool.
I just think it's different as far as a bobblehead is concerned.
I think that having a little statue replica of a statue at the stadium, I find that to be awesome.
But another thing I find to be awesome is the salmon run.
from the Seattle Mariners.
Now, most of you may or may not know what the salmon run is.
The salmon, it's similar to our legends race.
It's similar to the hot dog race.
But it's four salmon of different kind.
There's Coho, there's King.
Of course, there's the legend.
Humpty.
Humpey's a legend.
And now you can get all of these amazing salmon on a Aloha-style salmon-run shirt.
I think we have a shot of that, Damon, a little picture action.
A couple of other giveaway items, I think, are on there as well.
But we got here, this, this, this, this, this is that beauty.
Colors are great.
The Mariners logo.
That's up to you to decide if you like that.
But having, you know me, you know print shirts.
You know I love me, a good print shirt.
This isn't even, this isn't even like, they say Aloha style.
This is just a button up shirt, man.
This is just something I would wear.
If I was a Mariners fan, one day of the week, every single week for the rest of my life until the day I died.
This is just my Sunday best, man.
They also have a humpy shoulder buddy, magnetic shoulder buddy.
Love it.
Electric.
I need both of those things.
If anybody from Seattle is listening, I need your help.
Damon, one of my other favorite items that any team is giving away, on May 29th, the New York
Mets are giving away or well this one that one we'll get to that one but let's come back to me the
Mets.
Okay.
So something you didn't send me.
You're throwing me.
I'm throwing a lot of place.
We got all sorts of stuff.
Yeah, I sent you pictures of certain things.
This one there was no picture of because the picture on the website was simply a picture of Bobby
Valentine from that infamous day where he was thrown out of a baseball game and came back to
sit in the dugout wearing a fake mustache and hat thinking.
that the umpires wouldn't see them and they did and they threw him out of the game again
and the Mets have a Bobby Valentine disguise that they're giving out on May 29th.
This is from June 9th, 1999.
Look it up.
It's one of the greatest things to ever happen in baseball history.
He was ejected from the game but returned to the dugout wearing sunglasses and a fake
mustache.
And now we can all be Bobby Valentine because the Mets are paying homage to that ridiculousness
with a mustache and hat giveaway at City Field.
on May 29th.
Freaking love it.
Love it.
But I have to admit that the greatest giveaway item that is out there that exists this season
in Major League Baseball comes courtesy of the Chicago White Sox.
And I think-
Was there ever any doubt, Derek?
I mean, Chicago White Sox, they know how to do these things because they have to get
people, they have to get butts in the stands.
And this is Damon's White Sox team, by the way.
But it's also God's White Sox team.
Because look at this thing.
A Pope hat.
They are, they have a Pope hat.
Oh, this makes me so jealous.
Because that's so specific to their thing.
So not only does it make me jealous that they have a Pope hat,
but it makes me jealous that the Pope is on their side too, right?
Like for this to validate giving away a Pope hat.
It's a lecture.
I need the Pope hat, Damon.
I might need it more than the Salmon Run shirt.
I don't know.
But meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks,
they had their item that apparently was elected by Steve Gilbert
and me and Steve might need to have a talk because Steve said
that the best giveaway item this year is the Serpientes replica jersey.
Come on, Steve.
And Steve went on to say that it's a loaded promotional giveaway calendar for the debacks.
It also features the mystery Corbyn Carroll 30-30 Bobblehead.
But this giveaway is the best, he says.
But the best giveaway is the purple and teal Serpientis replica jersey.
That will be given away on May 23rd to the first 25,000 fans.
Now, I would disagree, Damon.
It's a cool giveaway.
It's a cool giveaway.
I would argue, in my opinion, that the 2001 throwback jersey, the gray pinstriped jersey that they are giving away, it says Arizona across the front on September 19th, and it's being given away against the Yankees.
like that is the best jersey that's being given away in my opinion as far as any of this is concerned
but i would argue i would argue too that another really great giveaway item by the diamondbacks
that involves a jersey is they're coming out with a diamondbacks ASU which i know this guy hates
maryl kelly jersey and like again i i like promotional items and giveaway items that are unique
to the team, to the city, and I think that's just great.
I really do think it's great to have that.
I mean, I already said that I thought that that was pretty cool.
The only thing I took offense to it is that there's not a Kevin Ginkle version.
Yeah, I get it.
On U of A, that I get.
No, that's very true.
I think that it's a really cool giveaway item, and I love that they're trying to, you know,
that they always do a good job of getting ASU and U of A involved.
Now, the one item that I still reserve judgment on, but I think could end up being the
best item is also similar to the item I voted number one overall in Diamondbacks
history and that is on August 22nd they are coming out with the Serpientis
Haboob globe and this Serpientez Habo globe could be awesome I don't know what we've
seen is like a rendering of it and not the actual item similar to the
Geraldo Pardomo talking bobblehead that we still have no idea what it actually
looks like because the only thing we've seen is a little image of Heraldo
Perdomo kind of put onto a bobblehead bottom but
The Serbientes globe, interesting, got a lot of teal, got a lot of purple.
Has Chase Field in it.
And I feel like it's going to have a lot of sparkly purple and teal like sand inside of it.
So it could be very cool.
But I will reiterate that one of the reasons why the original Habib Globe Globe was so good was simply because it represented a Haboob.
That's it.
That's why it was so good.
Because we in this town have experienced that.
We had a great moment with the legendary Pedro Gomez.
May he rest in peace, where he called it a baboon.
running around through downtown Phoenix, right?
So, like, there was a lot of things that made that giveaway special when it came to coming out
with it being a Hibu, but I think the biggest thing is, like, that's an actual meteorological
thing that we experience.
And, like, it's just, it is what it is.
It's kind of funny, and it was cool.
And it's, once again, very unique to us here in Arizona and very unique to Chase Field.
So I still love the original one where it's just the stadium and a bunch of sand in it.
And I think it was so clever and still stands out.
But again, this one with all of the purple and teal could be very pretty.
I don't love the S logo like being on a thing sticking up out of the stadium.
I'll reserve judgment though until we see the real thing, right?
I still think that could be awesome.
But I will say I agree with the kind of Steve in the aspect that the Diamondbacks have like a lot of cool items throughout the year.
A lot of great things that I would want.
But I will also say that not there's not one thing that really particularly sticks.
out. I will say that the Diamondbacks have some amazing giveaways for the kids club, and maybe
they should consider giving those away as giveaway items instead of kids club members, because
a little magnetic baxter on your shoulder would go hard and any adult or child would want one,
so I don't understand why we're just giving them the children. I want one right now on my shoulder.
This is like, I want this guy sitting here. This is where I want that. Also, same thing with the
perdomo chain. You mean to tell me only children want a Geraldo Perdomo fake gold chain?
Damon would let his neck turn four shades of green to wear that.
And he'd still rock it.
He still wouldn't take it off.
He'd wear it in the shower.
And you know he's not supposed to do that.
But yeah, cool, cool items there for the kids.
Might have to just lie about my age and go over there and get them.
But Serpienti's replica jersey is still very cool.
It's no pop hat, though.
Let's be honest.
And nothing is the pop hat.
So Chicago White Sox, you guys win this round.
But of course, we thank you guys so much for being here.
We got a baseball game starting at 410 that we all get to watch.
Like I said, I'm going to be doing a debacks recap after the game.
So make sure you're subscribed to our audio feed and you will get that.
But also, of course, make sure you follow us on social media.
I am at cap underscore caveman with a K.
Damon is at Damon Dog with a D-A-W-G.
And we're all damask.
Our show is at PHNX underscore D-Backs,
but all roads do lead to at PHNX underscore Sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
Appreciate you guys being here today.
Thank you guys so much for your time.
We'll be back tomorrow with another post-game show after that first matchup with the Philadelphia Phillies.
And you know Damon's going to be fired up about taking on the Phillies at Alec Thomas's Bank.
So there's that.
So make sure to come back here for that.
What's the status of Garrett Stubbs right now?
Oh, I don't know.
I think he's the mascot for their AAA squad right now.
He's the backup Philly fanatic right now.
Yeah, yeah.
He's got to work his way back up to the Major League Ross to be the actual Philly fanatic.
Apparently he's in the.
the Phillies organization here.
Do you hold on for one second, Derek.
Let's get an update on this for the people.
This is an article by the morning call.
Breaking down Zach Wheeler's last start.
Plus plans for Garrett Stubbs.
Plans for Garrett Stubbs.
What could that possibly entail, Derek?
Weaponizing him once again, weaponizing Gary Stubbs.
Genuinely, again, plans to make him the mascot of the team, I'm pretty sure.
Garrett Stubbs played third base for Team.
Israel and the World Baseball Classic.
And he's played left field for the Phillies.
He's also played first, second, and right in the Astro System.
And so, yeah, I mean, I guess they're trying to increase his value in any way we can
expand his resume and add another position, apparently.
It's going to help, apparently, according to some guy in the organization.
Yeah, things are going good for Garrett Stepp.
trying to find a way to get him on the field in AAA, it sounds like.
Scrup.
We don't want that.
Garrett Scrubs.
Yeah, there you go.
You nailed it.
You finally got his ass.
You finally got his ass.
But anyway, thank you guys so much for your time.
We'll be back here, like I said, tomorrow with another postgame show.
So make sure join us for that.
In the meantime, I hope you guys all have a wonderful evening.
And I hope we all get to experience a Diamondbacks game win and series win against the Mets.
But of course, like I said, we appreciate you stopping by.
you tomorrow. Until then, have yourselves a wonderful evening and remember kids. Baseball is fun,
but it's so much more fun when, once again, you get 500 games with Corby and Carroll on your
baseball team.
