Starting point is 00:00:00 Just in case there are any stragglers out there in the D-Backs fan community, we are giving you all of the reasons why every single one of you should be rooting against the Los Angeles Dodgers. And maybe extends past D-Backs fan bases. Maybe we're giving everyone who isn't a Dodgers fan a reason to hate the Dodgers and root against them. Don't you go anywhere? We're going to do this in 30 seconds. We're in a happy World Series day to all who observe. Welcome in to another edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast, live.
Starting point is 00:00:41 from Studio K, presented by our friends at Circle K. It is I, your mayor of PHNX, occasionally known as Derek Montia. Got Damon Dog on the ones and twos today. Glad to have you guys here with us. Happy Friday to you all. And more importantly, happy game one of the world series to you all,
Starting point is 00:01:03 at least for those of you that are still watching baseball and still care. And if you do care, we're going to give you all of the reasons why you should be hate watching. the Dodgers in this World Series and hoping that everything, all the bad things in the world happen to just that team. But of course, this show is brought to you by our friends at Bet365 and GameTime.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Make sure to use that code of PHNX 365 when you sign up, get yourself some bonus bets over there at Bet365, and also use our code of PHNX over a game time to save $20 off your first ticket purchase on those already low last-minute ticket deals. By the way, if you're a pro wrestling fan, it is small venue weekend here. Small venue mania weekend here.
Starting point is 00:01:42 WWE is going to be out at Mullet tonight. There are still tickets available for that as well as Halloween havoc in Prescott Valley. And let me tell you, some of those wrestlers are not prepared for either how far the drive is from Tempe to Prescott Valley or how poor the accommodations
Starting point is 00:01:58 are up there in that area. But I'm not going to slam a northern Arizona city today because I have plenty of slamming to do. I'm here to slam the Los Angeles Dodgers and seek out any of you Dabx fans that might still have an ethical reason to be rooting for the Dodgers in some sort of way. We're going to snuff that out and make sure by the end of this show, you all have all of the reasons why to hate the Dodgers and root against them here in the World Series.
Starting point is 00:02:24 And it's great to have you guys, Ryan, Ski, to you, Deborah, Michael. Thanks for being here, guys. Happy Friday to you all. Of course, we know that the Dodgers starters have already been historically good this postseason. It's sickening how good the Dodgers starting pitching is. they have a 1.40 ERA as a staff in the postseason entering the World Series. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays, as we have said time and time again, they bring the bats and their bats have been good. Toronto has a deep lineup and a strong home record there with getting the home field advantage.
Starting point is 00:03:00 They were 58 and 29 at home this season and that could play big if they end up being able to force some more games there or at least take early advantage. here of this Los Angeles Dodgers team. There is obviously a mix of international interests here. Not only do we have international superstars and Shohei and Vladie Jr., but also the entire country of Japan is going to be watching. I feel like all of Canada comes together to become Toronto Blue Jays fans. Could be one of the most watched World Series internationally. Maybe ever.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Maybe in quite some time. But I guess there are some questions here. biggest question has to be while the Dodgers starting pitching has been so good that it doesn't leave much of a margin for error there for Toronto Blue Jays or much of a margin for them to not get to those starters and get them out of the game quickly. The Dodgers bullpen, once again, still continues to be their biggest weakness. They will be without Alex Vessia, it appears. Lefty reliever Alex Vescia's status for the World Series is uncertain right now due to a deeply, They're calling it, quote, a deeply personal family matter from a Dodgers statement on Thursday.
Starting point is 00:04:13 So as much as we hate the Dodgers, we don't want to see anything terrible like that happening. So I hope it's not too awful or, you know, hope Alex does not miss too much time here in the World Series. That's, you know, a big catastrophe for any athlete. However, sometimes issues in life do take precedent. But again, a lot of questions here in this series. And those can start tonight in game one, especially if the Blue Jays can force the Dodgers to use that bullpen early and, you know, steal some games here early on. It's kind of weird because it feels like Toronto is such an underdog in this, but I don't really feel like they really are. Like betting odds-wise, looking at a lot of the predictions, the Dodgers seem to very much be, you know, the underdogs in this situation.
Starting point is 00:05:05 but I, or excuse me, the Blue Jays look to be, but I don't know, man. You look at some of the things that the rosters have right now and you look at what the Toronto Blue Jays have been doing this postseason. I feel like once again, they are, if any team, one of the best teams that has a chance at preventing the Dodgers from winning their second consecutive World Series. And that's what we want the most. For the Dodgers, if their starters continue to dominate, this could be a short series. It's that easy.
Starting point is 00:05:33 but if they slip a little bit or if you start to see them not be able to go as long as they have been, then you really start to feel like the Blue Jays have a chance. Injuries, availability matters. Like I said, there with Alex Vesia, or Vesia, excuse me. And then you also have Toronto's depth here and how healthy Bo Bouchet returning to this team could impact their already potent offense, right? I mean, Boba Chet had an incredible 2025. He slashed 311, 357, 483 for 840 OPS, 18 home runs, and 94 RBI in 2025. It's quite frankly amazing that this Blue Jays, you know, starting lineup was able to be as highly powered offensively as they have been this postseason without him, right?
Starting point is 00:06:23 So the fact that Vladdy and George Springer have done such a good job, they did not miss his 3.4 B-war that he had this regular. season. But he is back now and could have an immediate impact. He could very much improve this offense and add another powerful weapon to the J's already formidable lineup, right? And again, they also have home field advantage. Toronto hasn't been here in decades. The crowd, the momentum, that could all energize them. Like there is something to be said. We've attacked Dodgers fans consistently throughout the year. But there is one thing that you could say is that perhaps with all of the success and everything that they've been given, all of the great times they've had. I can't imagine Dodgers fans having the same energy as Blue Jays fans.
Starting point is 00:07:08 They might even be complacent by this point at seeing their team be in the World Series and win championships and be as good as they are. I really do think that the Toronto fans are going to have a big impact. I mean, they're willing to do anything. We already discussed what that one man wore on his shirt, which I'm sure we still can't show on this show. but you know what he wore in retaliation to plugging up the big dumper. I guess that's the best way I could say it.
Starting point is 00:07:34 That's the best way I could say it. These fans are willing to humiliate themselves in order to get a point across, and I am here for it. That is a level of fandom that I think we should try to attain for sure. But again, the Dodgers are heavily favored here. Most experts are leaning towards picking the Dodgers to win. There was a, I think the ESPN did a poll in 36 of 56 votes in that panel, expected the Dodgers to win.
Starting point is 00:07:59 And again, it's about length, right? The longer that this series goes for some reason, I feel like it gives the Toronto Blue Jays more of a chance. I think that that means that they're able to get and stretch that Dodgers bullpen. The Dodgers do have, you know, some solutions there. Obviously, we've talked about Sasaki and how good he's been this postseason. But it doesn't feel like they still have very much depth there.
Starting point is 00:08:19 And the loss of Essia means that they could potentially even be without him and that could lead them even with less. less depth, right? So this all comes down to tonight and what Toronto can do in game one. If Toronto can go out there and steal game one, I feel like that changes the outlook of this series dramatically, despite the fact that, you know, Toronto has home field advantage, right? And again, Toronto's just got a nice mix. They've got a nice mix. And I think that they're going to give at least the Dodgers starting pitchers more of a struggle than they had against the brewers. I think the breweries.
Starting point is 00:08:57 had less hits in the CS and championship series than the, then George Springer did. I think George Springer had more hits by himself than the Brewers did. So I think that they'll do a good job there. That's a wild. That's a wild stat, right? George Springer has been incredibly good. And so as Vladdy Jr., right? So it's like you can't take anything away from how those guys have led the way.
Starting point is 00:09:20 But it was more about the Brewers' ineptitude, right? like the burrs were a potent offensive team themselves. They were pretty much a pretty powerful offensive juggernaut not only throughout the season, but they're in that first round against the Cubs, and the Dodgers snuffed that out immediately. So there is something to be said once again about how dominant starting pitching will win you championships. And there is a good chance that that might happen for the Dodgers here once again.
Starting point is 00:09:47 For sure, Derek. I think the point that you made about just kind of the series, is extending and the longer it goes, the better chance the Blue Jays have. I agree with that. I feel like if anyone's going to sweep, it's going to be the Dodgers, right? And if any, or if there's going to be a gentleman sweep, it's likely going to be the Dodgers. But if it goes six, seven games, now the pendulum starts feeling like it's a lot more even. Like the Blue Jays have a pretty good shot because anyone could win a game seven at the end of the day when a one-off scenario. So I think getting a game here early for the Blue Jays, just to ensure that this thing keeps getting
Starting point is 00:10:23 extended out is going to be massive. Well, and I mean, again, the home field advantage could play huge there for the Blue Jays. And I think that that's one reason why they have a chance. I still don't love their chances starting pitching wise, but in game one, especially in game one, right? In game one, you have quite the matchup going tonight. You have Blake Snell, 3-0, 0.86 ERA in the postseason, 28 strikeouts, going up against Trey Yassavage, rookie, made his date.
Starting point is 00:10:53 debut on September 15th, Damon for the Toronto Blue Jays. And now here he is pitching in game one of the World Series. I know he's not Mizorowski, but that was like the starting pitcher that gave the Dodgers is seemingly like the most difficulty so far in this postseason is the rookie. So maybe they can catch them off guard a little bit. Less tape, less ability to scout them and see what their tendencies are. So who knows? Who knows?
Starting point is 00:11:18 Trey had himself, I think, the only person I feel like had an equivalent year is what we've talked about with Philip Abner for the Diamondbacks, right? Started his minor league season in 2025 in low A, promoted to high A Vancouver Canadians in May, promoted to AA New Hampshire, promoted to AAA, Buffalo, and then on September 15th, he's out there making his major league debut for the Toronto Blue Jays. And again, now here he is pitching in game one of the World Series. Don't tell me baseball isn't the best. Baseball is the absolute best, right? I mean, and again, it's another reason why this Toronto Blue Jays team is a team like you feel you can get behind. You know, like it's already terrible for us in the National League West, right? It's already terrible.
Starting point is 00:12:06 It's already just an uphill battle. It causes you anxiety. It's hard to have a positive outlook being in this division with the Los Angeles. I don't know if them winning or losing is better for the Diamondbacks. I sincerely don't because perhaps they get to a point where they've won so much that they stopped caring about winning. Right. Like, ah, we've got plenty. We'll let some of these other guys get in on it.
Starting point is 00:12:31 I don't feel that's the case. I almost feel like this is, again, all of our faults because we all picked on them so much for their 2020 Mickey Mouse ring. Right? That I feel like the Dodgers are like, we're going to put together a team that's so good that none of you are ever going to to win the World Series ever again. And that's what it feels like. That's where it feels like we're at. I'll tell you what, they won't get tired of winning because when have you ever heard of a billionaire getting tired of money, Derek? That doesn't happen. Like these people are greedy. They want no, they want more, more, more, more, more. They're going to try to sign every Japanese superstar that ever walks out
Starting point is 00:13:06 of the JPL. It's like me getting tired of marijuana, Damon. It just, it doesn't happen. It doesn't happen. Fair. You know, you're right. It's a miserable thing. She's never done you wrong, Derek. Well, no, she's never let me down in the way Arizona sports has, that's for sure. But what I will say is that we covered yesterday, you know, a way that the Diamondbacks can build towards something similar to what the Mariners have. And again, the Diamondbacks do have, I feel like the pieces to build around and the ability to potentially, you know, make those moves and, you know, improve this team for the future. But 2020, 2020, 2006 looks bleak and it might be even more bleak without one of the Arizona Diamondbacks. talk executives as part of this team. We're going to talk about that in a little bit as well.
Starting point is 00:13:51 But before we do that, we are going to give you, if you already didn't have enough reasons to hate the Los Angeles Dodgers and be rooting against them, we're going to be giving you all of the reasons why tonight. And for the next week, we should all unify as baseball fans together to root against Los Angeles Dodgers and root for the Toronto Blue Jays to win the World Series. We're going to do that on the other side of this break. Don't you go anywhere. You're watching the PHA next time of that show.
Starting point is 00:14:22 Well, Damon, do you know what time it is? I'm guessing it's game time. It is game time. It's always game time over at game time, and that's because that's the best place for you to buy sports tickets, especially last minute. Like I said, we got wrestling in town. It is the season for over $80 million in prizes over at Arizona Lottery. I start
Starting point is 00:15:44 buying Arizona Lottery tickets now and just start randomly giving them out. It's my favorite thing to give out during the holiday season. And they have holiday tickets right now from Arizona lottery. And you can play those for your chance to fill your stockings with cash. There are six festive scratchers to choose from, including Cash Countdown, which has prizes up to $250,000 and candy cane cash, which smells just like peppermint. That's right. They are the best place to start and everybody loves getting scratches. But of They are for 21 and over only, so must be 21 and over to play.
Starting point is 00:16:23 Play and gift today, thanks to Arizona Lottery. Damon Dogg, this feels like a silly discussion to be having. I don't think there is any reason why I need to give you, especially of all people, any more reasons to hate the Los Angeles Dodgers. I'm always open to it, though. I know. I know. You're always willing to hear all of the details and all of the good reasons why, but.
Starting point is 00:16:51 I'll sit my white ass down and listen. for what's there. Well, maybe some D-Backs fans might think differently, right? Maybe there are some of you out here watching the show. There are dozens of you, by the way. I appreciate that. Make sure you like the show while you're here watching. We appreciate that as well.
Starting point is 00:17:07 But again, there are some people that might live by that code of, I want the team that beat me to win. Now, I know that's not the case here for the Arizona Diamondbacks because they didn't make the World Series. but perhaps there are fans of the Milwaukee Brewers or the Cincinnati Reds that feel that way. I know that's a perspective that people did have during the playoffs. I also know that the team that I'm asking everyone to root for is from the country of Canada. And while I love our Canadian brothers and sisters,
Starting point is 00:17:39 there may be some people that want to keep baseball in America, right? They might feel like my thing of saying rooting for the Toronto Blue Jays is the most American thing you can do is a joke or it's not true. It is. It is, in fact. Routing for the Toronto Blue Jays is in fact the most American thing you can do. Now, I will say this. For all intents and purposes, I understand why some people might feel like the Blue Jays are the more hateable team. First of all, Damon, they are filled with nepo babies, right? A bunch of nepo babies over there. You got these sons of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., or Vladimir Guerrero and junior, you got a Bo Bichette over there, Dante Bichette's kid. and even Dalton Varshot's dad played Major League Baseball.
Starting point is 00:18:24 None of these guys won a World Series, by the way. I don't know why that's important to just point out, but this might be their children's chance at redeeming them. That might make them even more lovable. I don't know. But you also have George the Cheater Springer over there, right? Who terrorized this Dodgers team back in 2017, played a crucial role winning the MVP in that World Series.
Starting point is 00:18:50 after hitting 379 with five home runs and an OPS of 1.471. That was clean baseball. That was clean baseball. That was good, clean fun that the Astros were having out there against the Dodgers. For sure. He also hit the game winning three run homer in game seven. And Dodgers fans, I'm sure, remember that. So there's other reasons, too, by the way.
Starting point is 00:19:10 Even some Canadians don't like Toronto. Apparently most Canadians don't. If you don't live in Toronto as a Canadian, and you most likely don't actually like Toronto. Maybe you're not hateful against their citizens, but most other Canadians don't have truly nice things to say about Toronto. They will root for the Blue Jays, though, in this case, because the Blue Jays do become Canada's team.
Starting point is 00:19:33 I was what to say. I feel like I have been thinking about that. Like when you only have one team, it feels like that they would kind of root for that team, no, if any of them care about baseball. Like they're kind of all going to get in on that, unless they're maybe Mariners fans in Vancouver. I feel like that would be the only, and that probably are extra bad.
Starting point is 00:19:53 That's just, yeah, that's a fresh wound. That's a fresh wound for them. Can you imagine being a Canadian in Vancouver rooting for the Mariners? That's your team. And then you hate the Blue Jays more than anything because that's what everybody else's team is. And, yeah, disaster. Devin makes a good point. Toronto might be Canada's L.A.
Starting point is 00:20:09 More like New York, but yeah. Sure, sure. Also, I don't love their take on bacon. they tend to slam us for bacon, like American bacon versus Canadian bacon. They slam us for the stuff we call Canadian bacon, quite frankly. They think that's garbage as well. So to be fair, they might be right. Because if you've ever seen Canadian actual Canadian bacon, it looks like a pork chop.
Starting point is 00:20:32 And I'm not ever going to be against getting more meat on my plate on breakfast. Derek, I do have a little bit of breaking news as regards to the World Series. What's that? Boba Chet in the lineup tonight for the Blue Jays. There he is. Playing second base, hitting clean up, Bo Bichet has returned. Slash 311, 357, 483 with an 840 OPS. That's a dangerous man to have back in the lineup.
Starting point is 00:20:58 But, okay, I've given you all the reasons, obviously, that you might be against Toronto. And though I don't think any of them are valid reasons. I've been unjustly called a Nepo baby, even though my dad did nothing to get me anywhere. And he did, like, let me, like, he did father me. Like, there's, he was a good dad. I'm just like saying he's not, he was a, that's a whole other thing. But anyway, I will say, though, there are plenty of reasons a mountain, a pile, if you will, for Diamondbacks fans to hate the Dodgers. And there's no reason why we shouldn't go through those and just reiterate them as we set upon the World Series.
Starting point is 00:21:29 Let's not forget that they are the bullies of the National League West. And they have been for a very long time. They're bullies both in the way that they've approached playing us as well as financially their bullies. They've made it nearly impossible for teams like the Diamondbacks to break through consistent. no matter how good of a team we put together, and their constant presence atop the standings has made them. The ultimate divisional villain. Like, I don't know of another team that bullies the rest of their division
Starting point is 00:21:55 the way the Los Angeles Dodgers do, the National League West. You could say that, oh, the NL East, the NL West, or excuse me, the L. East, the ALE East, some of those, like, oh, they have all this. No, no. No team is as dominant over the rest of their division as the Dodgers are, both literally and how much they've won and how much they spend and the talent that they're able to bring in. It's like Tori said and that we've played time and time again. I'm so tired of seeing the best players in baseball come to this division.
Starting point is 00:22:27 And again, the real thing that still sticks out in everybody's mind is the 2017, you know, the 2013 pull party, right? Excuse me, not 2017, 2013 pool party. when the Dodgers did clinch the division and I was there and they jumped in our pool, right? I will give this.
Starting point is 00:22:54 I give the Dodgers this year, at least credit, for not being the same scumbags that were part of this team in the past that would do that, right? But that's a whole other thing. Never forgive them. Never forgive them for jumping in our pool.
Starting point is 00:23:07 Never forgive them. Let's probably, like if you, we should probably compile a list of some of the most, disrespectful moves that one team pulled on another in sports history, that would have to be a top
Starting point is 00:23:19 10, I feel like. Just because it didn't involve like a fight or an on-field altercation during a game, it was just utter complete disrespect afterwards. The Brewers could probably get that for flying the L flag that they flew as well. That was probably a really dumb move, especially
Starting point is 00:23:35 considering that they still had a lot of baseball to play after that. But again, it goes without saying the outspending by the Dodgers. That's like the outspending, the breaking of baseball is the one reason why every fan in baseball should hate the Dodgers. It's ruined the game. The Dodgers and what they've done is the reason why we won't have baseball in 2027. And the closer we get to that, the more realistic that becomes, the more we should all hate the Dodgers. And it's wild that it wasn't the Otani signing or the Freddie Freeman signing that really broke.
Starting point is 00:24:11 you know, the backs of GMs across baseball, including the New York Yankees. It was Tanner Scott somehow being the straw, the straw that broke the camels back. And it was the one move too much where most across the league have said something needs to change. That is the ultimate reason why we should all hate the Dodgers. The fact that they have done this to baseball. Like, it is baseball's fault. They allowed it. Right? So it's not like the Dodgers have done anything that are against the rules, but my God, the way they have structured it makes it impossible for anybody to compete and keep up without doing the same stuff.
Starting point is 00:24:55 Like you can't play it in a straightforward, honest way as a franchise any longer and still, you know, expect to hang and compete with the Dodgers. there was a time where Bobby Bonilla's contract was a thing of and still is, right, like a joke in baseball. Happy Bobby Bonilla day. This man got a deferred deal where he basically gets paid like $1.5 million. I know it's not the number, but it's somewhere in the neighborhood that like every year. Could you imagine any of us regular normal people getting paid that much as every year and how much we would look forward to that day? Right. It's a move that didn't necessarily work out for the Mets, but it became a known thing across baseball.
Starting point is 00:25:37 Hopefully one day we can celebrate Shohei Otani Day. And hopefully that when that comes, it breaks the bank of the Dodgers every time it comes around. But I have a feeling it's not going to. Financially, they were savvy enough to figure out a way to make money off of the money that they eventually have to pick show aeotani. And that right there is the most criminal part of this whole situation. But again, it's within the confines of Major League Baseball's rules. What they've done, though, is going to cause changes to need to be made. and that is where we're at.
Starting point is 00:26:08 Because, again, it's not that they did anything wrong, but the damage has been done, and that team is going to be set up to be good for a very long time. Not to mention that they put themselves in a position to be one of the most desirable landing spots for international free agents for years to come, and it's all because of the way they've set themselves up financially. And I mean, again, what was the old owner?
Starting point is 00:26:32 You know, Frank, was it Frank McCord or whoever the old owner? Like that Dodgers franchise, for years was a disaster, right? And it all had to do with the best. It all had to do with who was in charge, right? So it just goes to show how important executives, general managers, people running teams properly are compared to someone that was wrapped up in a messy divorce trial and had a lot of other personal things going on, right?
Starting point is 00:26:56 But I don't know, man. I mean, there are a lot of messy things. You could hate the Dodgers for the Trevor Bauer era and how they handled that. And again, just leaving. fans, you know, wanting some accountability there. And I mean, I guess the Dodgers did take some action, but not what people felt was enough, right? You also have, of course, our playoff matchups destroying us when we thought we had a chance there after beating Colorado Rockies in a wildcard game. That 2017 NLDS sweep was embarrassing.
Starting point is 00:27:30 It doesn't hurt for the right kind of reasons. It hurts because it once again just showed how outclassed we were at the time. time, but the Diamondbacks got themselves back to a place where they got their revenge in 2023. And again, that revenge, just like the poking fun at the Dodgers for their Mickey Mouse ring in 2020, feels like the reasons why this organization was like, we're never letting any of you win another championship as long as we're alive, right? Plus, you have the arrogant fan energy, the taking over. Like, we experience that here because you have a lot of L.A. transplants and a lot of people that just naturally live here that have kept their allegiance.
Starting point is 00:28:06 to Los Angeles. So there's plenty of reasons for Diamondbacked fans to hate the Dodgers. But I am sure many of you have seen these takeovers where they were like marching down the streets of Chicago to Wrigley Field to like take over Wrigley Field. And they were like taking over stadiums across baseball. It's quite frankly, loser energy from a fan base that has won entirely too much. And I don't understand it. I guess from their perspective, it's fun to find your people and unite together.
Starting point is 00:28:35 we do takeovers, we do fun things, right? But again, if Dodgers fans behave themselves and treated others with respect the way that we see like Toronto Blue Jays fans, for instance, do so, even though I'd never expect a Canadian to ever be a mean sports fan, but unless it's hockey, hockey's, we bleed and we sweat and hockey. I mean, like Maple Leafs fans are like the meanest of the fans. Yeah, that's true. I mean, it's just the way that they, the second class citizen treatment, right,
Starting point is 00:29:04 where even the Diamondbacks themselves were a cute little story in 2023 when they beat the Dodgers and went on to the World Series. And maybe they were, you know, but the Dodgers, meanwhile, are treated like the gods of baseball. And it's all because they found a way to evade the, essentially the rules put in place to try to prevent teams from overspending and outspending everyone else. And now they're just paying more, they're paying more in taxes than most teams. are paying in their payroll. And that's where we're at in baseball. And that's okay. Right.
Starting point is 00:29:39 And also, I mean, again, it's the, if you want to get to the grittiness of it, right, for those of you that might not want to root for a Canadian team, can I offer you, you can be against the Hollywood elites? I'm just throwing it out there. I'm trying to get anybody that I can that might be stragglers left. But there are plenty of reasons they hate the Dodgers. And I shouldn't have even had to list them for you guys. But of course, again, at the very time.
Starting point is 00:30:04 is the reason why the Dodgers are structured this way. Michael Dixon says a salary floor would be better than a salary cap, correct? But it's just weird to me that every other sport understands the importance of making sure that the sport remains fair. And there's something about baseball that is just still broken in that way. And it's broken in many ways. It's not just what the Dodgers have done. And I've said time and time again that I feel like the minor league system in baseball. is very broken. They've made steps to fix it. They provided housing to minor leaguers. They've done other
Starting point is 00:30:40 things that have helped correct what they've done. But at the same time, it still feels like baseball has a lot of things to fix. And I don't know, man. I mean, I don't know if a salary cap is the answer, but it definitely feels like something needs to be done in order to, you know, make baseball have some parity here. You know, have some sort of sense of equal and fair across baseball. I will say, though, that many teams do not spend the amount of money that they should. And that's a big problem, and that's part of the problem as well. So that goes to what Michael Dixon is saying. When you start seeing the list of percentage of income made versus what is reinvested back in the team, the Dodgers, who make a ton of money reinvest the majority of it back into the team. The Diamondbacks don't make nearly as much,
Starting point is 00:31:28 they reinvest a lot of it back in the team. So again, a salary cap would definitely help or a salary floor would help, but I feel like a cap would help as well. And that would make us hate these Dodgers less. You can't sometimes hate like somebody for their hustle and having it go in their favor, right? This is, I mean, speaking as someone on YouTube, I shouldn't start throwing stones at other YouTubers. But this is like when you see the YouTuber that does nothing but stream have the
Starting point is 00:31:58 four cars in the driveway and the mansion, right? Doesn't seem fair. But at the same time, you know, hey, it's, uh, that found a, found a way to make it work for them and they're living that life, right? So the Dodgers definitely found a way overall to make the system work in their favor and they've done nothing to circumvent the rules in any way other than, you know, making so much money that they don't really mind how much they're being taxed. And that money goes back in the baseball and is supposed to be redistributed to help. make baseball more fair. That doesn't seem to be working though. So anyway, open the books. Let's see how much of money everybody's making. Let's figure it out. And then we'll talk about a salary cap or a salary
Starting point is 00:32:38 floor being needed or not needed. But what is needed for the Arizona Diamondbacks is helping their front office. We have no idea what 2026 going badly means for the front office. But we do know that the Diamondbacks are in danger of losing one of their top executives, one of Mike Hazen's right-hand man, men and that could have a big impact on what Hazen is able to do this offseason without one of his top advisors. We know that they are looking not only for a new general manager, but they are also looking for a new manager for their baseball team. And per a report from the athletic,
Starting point is 00:35:40 Arizona Diamondback Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager Amiel Saude has been identified as a finalist for the Rockies General Manager opening. And that sucks. Saude has had a huge influence on this team. He has been, he is a great eye for talent, and he has been a loyal advisor to Mike Hazen throughout the years. Meanwhile, the Rockies parted ways with their general manager, Bill Schmidt at the end of 2025 season, which saw the Rockies go 43 and 119, which is the second worst national league and third worst overall record in the modern era of baseball. And they've typically promoted from within, but it does feel like the Colorado Rockies have a problem there internally.
Starting point is 00:36:24 We have talked to people. We have talked to our guy, Christian Sides, from DNVR Rockies, and he has filled us in at how big of a mess this team is and this organization is internally, and that seems to be where all of the problems really are at this point. It makes sense that they wouldn't have internal candidates to promote from within the way they have their last two general managers. But Rockies owner, Dick Monfort, and they made it clear that they are looking for voices from out. side of the organization to lead a revamp. And it makes sense considering right now how, uh, what, what a position this team currently is. And quite frankly, it makes sense to go after
Starting point is 00:37:06 someone, uh, like Amiel's, like Amiel Saaday and with someone with that track record. Uh, and it could be a disaster for the Diamondbacks if this man leaves, especially for Mike Hazen. Saaday has worked along, uh, Diamondbacks man, GM Mike Hazen, uh, for the better part of 10 years. He began his career in Boston with the Red Sox alongside of Mike Hazen, where he was eventually promoted to director of amateur scouting. And now Saudey has followed Hazen over here to the D-backs as assistant GM prior to the 2017 season and basically has been, again, Mike Hazen's right-hand man ever since. He filled in as interim GM in the 2021 season when Hazen had to take a leave of absence. So, of course, this one hurts. And I don't, obviously, nothing is for sure.
Starting point is 00:37:53 This report from the athletic has stated that there are others within the organization that have, or there are other candidates, there are other finalists besides Saaday. So there's a good chance that maybe they go after someone else. But this to me, and Damon, I wanted to get your thoughts on this, this to me feels like a disaster. Just because I feel like Mike Hazen right now at this point has a lot riding. on 2026. And I think the loss of somebody that's this close to him that has had this much input on the talent that they have brought to this team.
Starting point is 00:38:33 And quite frankly, has seemingly nailed all the suggestions, all the talent that, Amiel Saade has been a big proponent of, have all been guys that have really worked out for this team. So it just feels like now is a terrible time for Hayes to lose, you know, one of his not only closest
Starting point is 00:38:56 allies, but, but biggest, I guess, biggest people he trusts. Yeah, no doubt about it. I mean, I think Amiel is clearly Mike's like second guy when it comes to decision-making processes. And it feels like the Diamondbacks
Starting point is 00:39:13 and Tori has kind of displayed this. It's a collective group that is making these decisions. This is not a Mike Hazen has the power at the top. And he tells, tells Tori what to do. It's like this everybody has almost an equal voice at the table and it feels like Amiel is one of those guys that. And when I say everybody, like obviously everyone can't have an equal voice, but it feels like he's one of those guys that has the most influence. So to lose a guy like that would would obviously be devastating. And I think you're 100% right. I think that might be the misinterpretation of what's going on with the, you know, Tori doesn't have the final say. The front office has a say in it. Tori saying he has a seat at the table. I don't think it's coming down from Mike. I think it's the fact that they are a collective. And I think that they do have a lot of voices that are heard,
Starting point is 00:40:02 a lot of opinions that are valued within the organization. And I think he is definitely one of them. But it makes it sound definitely when, you know, when Tori said that and we started speculating on it, it basically sounded like Tori had no power at all and everything that he was being, you know, told to do was coming from up top, right? Yeah. You're right about that.
Starting point is 00:40:20 I don't feel like Mike Hazen runs things that way. I do feel like this, though, when we talk about promoting from within and the Colorado Rockies wanting out an external voice, I feel like the other problem with this is that Saaday could technically be like a successor to my case and should the Diamondbacks go in a different direction. So losing him as a potential successor to another team that gives him that GM promotion beforehand really also feels like it's the Diamondbacks losing another part of their future. I'm not saying that that's what was going to happen, but I mean, he's the assistant GM.
Starting point is 00:40:55 He's been here for a while. His knowledge is very valued within the organization. So I just have a hard time not believing that he would be deemed the top candidate should Mike Hazen step down or should the Diamondbacks, you know, part ways with Mike Hazen in one way or another. For me, it's the same combo as like the Jeff Bannister's idea. Sure. It's like, oh, my God, we got to get off of Tori Lovolo immediately. Who should we hire? The guy that Tori Lavolo has entrusted to be his vice president.
Starting point is 00:41:26 And you're like, so we shouldn't even have fired Tori Lavolo then is what you're trying to tell me. That's a good point. I think if you move off of Mike Hazen who's been here for so long and probably been the best GM in franchise history, wouldn't you say? I mean, if he's not one, he's two. But I don't know if you would give Calangelo like the GM moniker, I guess, necessarily. That was weird. That was also a group running thing. Yeah, it was kind of a weird thing to rank.
Starting point is 00:41:54 But I do just think that Mike Hayes, like if we're getting rid of Mike Hazen, you're going in a different direction. So. Yeah, no, that's a good point. That's a good point. Because I don't know if you're not happy with the way Hayeson has been running things. I don't feel like Amiel is going to run things differently. He and Mike are very close for a reason. And that's because they see eye to eye on things.
Starting point is 00:42:16 And they obviously have similar opinions about a lot of this stuff. Also, again, I think that to be a good GM, you do have to be able to value the input from people like Amio Sadei, right? So, like, again, that his voice could have a big impact on things Mike Hazen has done. But overall, it just feels like this is another devastating loss to the Diamondbacks should it happen, right? And I think that, again, it's hard. It would be another hole that this team would need to fill this offseason, which would be crazy. And not only that, but like, this is the, it's similar to a player leaving because not only would he be leaving to another team that we might see him thrive with, but it's a division rival, right? He's going to the Colorado Rockies.
Starting point is 00:43:04 You want to do everything you can to put a stop to this. Obviously, it's not a supremely desirable landing spot, but as far as the opportunity, it's an amazing opportunity for him. And as much as I hate to talk about not wanting to lose him, I do understand. wanting to support him and the organization wanting to support him and going out and trying for it. And if he does get that job being happy for him that he was able to, I guess, you know, make that huge step up in his career. But it would be a huge loss for the Diamondbacks. Meanwhile, I believe Amiel runs our drafts primarily.
Starting point is 00:43:36 Correct. That is his like almost designated role as being like the guy who does the college, runs the college in international and high school scouting in a sort of way. He's a big reason why the. And backs have been able to find the players that they have in the draft so far. And again, he's, you know, I don't want to give him full credit, but I've heard him be given credit for, you know, Corby and Carol being here and being a big, you know, a big proponent behind extending him.
Starting point is 00:44:04 I think everybody probably felt that way once Corbyn Carroll was part of this organization. So I don't think that that's, or once we started seeing him play baseball, but again, it could be a huge loss for this team. So we'll be keeping an eye on that. Meanwhile, Tori LaBolo won a golf tournament. I say that jokingly for the Tori LaBolo haters, Damon, in the chat, of course. But the Arizona Diamondbacks manager was the winner of the 2025 Fiesta Sports Foundation par three challenge this week. And that victory is a little bit bigger.
Starting point is 00:44:34 Let's go. Let's go. That's my manager. That's my manager right there. It does go a little bit bigger, though, than just winning a golf tournament because this was in honor of his lifelong friend, Dean Singer. who has been battling stage four cancer for three and a half years. And that was after a routine visit found a six-pound tumor on his kidney. I can only imagine.
Starting point is 00:44:56 I don't take good care of myself, Damon. And I feel like one of the reasons why a lot of people don't is because we have this fear that one day we're going to go to our doctor and be told something like this. And this is something awful to go through. He's gone through chemotherapy. He's gone through treatment. And Tori has been at his side the entire time. Tori and Dean have been friends since first grade. And they came together to start a foundation called the No One Fights Alone,
Starting point is 00:45:22 which is a non-profit to benefit the UCLA Johnson Cancer Center Foundation. So great cause. And of course, Tori's win, as much as it's a little bit of a bragging rights for him as a much bigger impact here. So the prize money, the charity money from that event will go to their No One Fights Alone charity. So again. Shout out, Tori. Tori's also clean-shaven.
Starting point is 00:45:47 I saw that. That was a little shocking to see. Yeah. Definitely, he shaved like 10 years off. He looks like a younger, much younger, Tori LaBalo. Yeah. Definitely. Less wise, too.
Starting point is 00:45:57 Yeah, less wise, but also ready to say the F word, quite a lot more. So that I'm here for. But I will probably be saying the F word a lot tonight because I'm going to be out there at Mullet Arena watching pro wrestling. And it's just what I do. But we're also going to be out at Mollett Arena. having a great time for our PHNX Mullet takeover.
Starting point is 00:46:18 We are taking over Mullet Arena and we are sitting in game, or section 107 for Sun Devils versus the Tigers. It's Colorado College Tigers. This is happening on Friday, November 7th. You can join Leah Merrill and the PHNX hockey crew as ASU takes
Starting point is 00:46:35 on those tigers. Again, that package includes a pre-game meetup to be determined with food and drink in Tempe. There is also game tickets in Section 107. And then, of course, the Immaculate hangs. The Immaculate hangs with your favorite Valley hockey crew. So make sure. That sounds like an electric time, Derek.
Starting point is 00:46:52 I mean, I, listen, I'm not the biggest hockey guy in the world. I'm absolutely not the biggest ASU guy in the world. But I do think it's, I do think it's funny when all ASU people come and try to talk mess to me about ASU hockey. It's like, it's like, listen, dude, you're talking to probably the guy who cares the least in the entire world. we do not have a hockey team we're not competing it's like you guys do your thing that seems like so much fun if you like hockey if you live in the valley it is head on over to mull it go watch a game and and take in some some puck man hockey is like an electric live sport it really is i miss it i miss it i need more of it my life and it's a good chance to go see some great hockey being played that when the
Starting point is 00:47:37 yotes are back i'm back that's what i see yeah all right well we got to get those yotes back first Thank God for Shane Dohn and Andrea Dohn for being our pack leaders there and trying to bring those hockey team back here. I don't know if it's going to happen, Damon, but everything is progressing towards expansion, right? We got baseball expanding Portland and Salt Lake City are fighting over a team, I think, or something weird's going on. Go Portland. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:03 Never been a bigger Portland fan in my entire life. Portland Pickles. Yep, that's right. Well, speaking of what, minor league baseball? it's time, Damon. It's time for us to once again be fall guys. And, of course, I have to put on the costume, right? That's part of this whole gig.
Starting point is 00:48:20 I think so. All right, well, let's do that. Let's get this bad boy on, of course. Let's be fall guys. Of course, Arizona Fall League Baseball has been a whole heck of a lot of fun. And Jack Hurley had himself a whole lot of fun the other day. That's for sure. Jack Hurley had himself a day for the raft.
Starting point is 00:48:40 Damon's laughing. at me because this costume isn't easy to get on and I still look like Baby Shark, but I'm going to stick out of it. It's coming apart. All right. Well, it looks so good on you, Derek. It looks great. I'm ready to be pushed over off of a hill. I think that's your color. I know. Well, ooh, I don't know. It's blue. It might be too blue. But the Salt River Rafters, ride the raft. They beat the brakes off the Glendale Desert Dogs, those chumps. The rafters won. Damon get this by a score of 16 to 6. So they improved to 8 and 6 And a big reason why the rafters are 16 and 6
Starting point is 00:49:16 Or they won 16 to 6 Was Jack Hurley Jack Hurley have yourself a day sir Jack Hurley came one single shy of the cycle Maybe he should have just pulled it back a little bit Damon I think we have some video Of his triple from the day
Starting point is 00:49:37 But Jack Hurley went four for five yesterday for the river rafters. He had two home runs. He almost had three, but I think one of them bounced off the top wall and bounced back into play. I think that's the one that we have the video of. Still hit seven homers, 11 doubles to one. And Hurley cranks a ball high into the air in the right center field. Cloacy's going back onto the warning track at the wall.
Starting point is 00:50:04 It kicks off the top of the wall and this ball is in play. rolling into straightaway center. Everybody's going to score and Hurley launches. I think he thought it was a home run, right? That was a little bit of a trot there. He almost had three. You watch him pimp it.
Starting point is 00:50:24 And he, I mean, he is jogging around the bases, but clearly hitting the ball while. You know what I mean? He definitely was. He had eight RBI yesterday in that win, Damon. He also went four for five. Two home runs, a triple, a double. and just a single shy of the cycle.
Starting point is 00:50:41 Imagine just having that be the one hit that you didn't get. That's pretty incredible. Also, Jansel Luis, infielder, Diamondbacks Prospect, he was two for four with a pair of singles and a walk for the rafters out there. And of course, yeah, they beat the crap out of the Glendale Desert Dogs who only have three wins on the season. It's hard to get excited about the win-loss record in Arizona Falle. because I don't know if you once again remember the changes we discussed on this program,
Starting point is 00:51:12 but every single team makes the playoffs in Arizona Fall League. So this is just about seating primarily. And I don't know if I love that. I think at least two teams need to not make the playoffs. I know that it's not a very big league, but I feel like at least two teams in order for the playoffs to be a playoff, Damon, I feel like somebody has to not make it in the playoffs. Am I wrong there? I don't think so
Starting point is 00:51:38 I mean there has to be like a playoff You know yeah You can't just make it the championship Well I know but I also don't know if I feel like every league Every team in the league should make the playoffs Oh absolutely yeah that's it's like the NBA Yeah somebody's got to not make it right It feels like in the NBA with the play in these days
Starting point is 00:51:56 That 20 I think it's 20 of 30 teams make the playoffs in some capacity And it's ridiculous yeah Well David Hagamon is starting today there at Salt River for the Salt River Rafters. So if you are so inclined to go check out some baseball, that is starting in about 35 minutes. So that's a great time for you to go out for. Run. Go run now. But I feel like we gave you all the reasons why to hate the Dodgers, but that World Series game starts today. And I love the World Series. I know I feel like baseball doesn't get the same love for its championship series that any other league gets.
Starting point is 00:52:35 right I maybe part of it is and and Damon I'd love to hear your thoughts on this maybe it's the time of the year it takes place right like all the other sports are kind of just starting or getting going and meanwhile the the baseball once again is like the odd man out where they are playing their championship game while all the other seasons are in the middle of starting but it just feels like you know again even for basketball I feel like the country is watching you know the basketball especially the NBA finals more than this maybe not hockey. Hockey probably gets, doesn't get as much love as it should in the Stanley Cup, but it definitely feels like the World Series is not like a must-see TV like it should be.
Starting point is 00:53:16 Yeah, I mean, I think it definitely has something to do with the time of year. The other three major sports just all started up literally last week. Right. And again. The NFL has been going for a little bit longer, but the NFL is always king. A regular season NFL game draws better than a World Series MLB game. So that's almost an incomparable. thing. But yeah, I think it's just the nature of when in the sports calendar things are happening.
Starting point is 00:53:39 But I also feel like, and maybe this is not backed up by ratings, but to me, it feels like baseball has gotten more popular over the last couple years. To me, it feels like people are locking a little bit more back in on baseball, are caring more about what's happening. And the playoffs in particular are a big reason why. I think another big reason why is that the NBA is getting less popular. That, you know, there's a little bit more of market share fans available because the NBA just continues to do worse and worse ratings-wise on every individual game basis. Obviously, their highlights, their TikToks, their social numbers continue to skyrocket. But Adam Silver goes into, they ask him about it.
Starting point is 00:54:18 And he says things like, yeah, well, it's a highlight consumed sport these days. Like he doesn't even care about the actual games. Oh, yeah. So that's where I have five different streaming apps in order to watch the games that we want to watch. Yeah, I think that's where baseball can take some advantages. Like you're never going to beat the NFL, but you can definitely try to beat them. NBA. And so, yeah, this is, this is going to be an important World Series just in terms of, like, trying to get more people watching it over, like, the start of NBA season. That's such a good point. That's such a good point. Not to mention the fact that NBA does have a, you know, a coach being arrested by the FBI for a poker scandal, a scam. Not even a scandal. Poker scam. Pulling a poker game scam. That professional poker players, what?
Starting point is 00:55:02 No idea what you're talking about, Derek. I don't believe that. happened, but we should talk about Terry Rozier and his big scandal that he had. You're never not loyal. You're never not loyal. And I respect it. But what I will say in not naming names is that. No, God, no. Why would we do that, Terry Rozier?
Starting point is 00:55:20 Why would we have video from 2019 of some professional poker player talking about what is scam going to play poker with Chonsie Billups is? That's a whole other thing. Whoa. Whoa. Allegedly. Allegedly. Allegedly. He was allegedly,
Starting point is 00:55:36 the scamming people. But I mean, what you said is right. And the MLB, MLB has some steam behind it. They have some, you know, growing, especially with the changes they made and the pace of game being something that people are much more in favor watching baseball games now.
Starting point is 00:55:53 And I feel like they're going to throw it all away in 2027 for a lockout. And it's just crazy to me. And I hope that they don't. I hope they understand the importance of avoiding that at all costs. But I feel like these two sides are too far apart. And again, this is all to blame the Dodgers. It's all the Dodgers fault.
Starting point is 00:56:09 And they're the reasons why we are careening towards this awful, awful inevitability of baseball being locked out. But anyway, we'll get to that then. We're going to have plenty of time to talk about how much the Dodgers broke baseball when we're not actually watching baseball being played. But go out, watch yourself some Arizona Fall League baseball tonight or this weekend. It's a great time. Make sure to tune into the World Series. it's going to be a great time to root for the Toronto Blue Jays. This is kind of a Blue Jays outfit. So I'm going with this. This is my Blue Jays outfit as well.
Starting point is 00:56:42 But in the meantime, we thank you guys so much. We'll be back on Monday with another Mailbag Monday episode. So please join us for that. Until then, you can follow us on Twitter. One second, Derek. I'm sorry to cut you off. If that's your Blue Jays outfit in the Blue Jays win tonight, I think for the remainder of the World Series,
Starting point is 00:56:58 you have to wear your Blue Jays outfit on the show every single day. I'm willing to make that sacrifice for our Jays. Yeah, I know you are. I think that sacrifice. So that's what we'll do. Derek, it all resides on tonight. Is it your Blue Jays outfit? We're going to find out.
Starting point is 00:57:11 We'll find out. I'll be, I don't know, singing, chirping, whatever I need to be doing. But of course, until then, we guys hope you have a wonderful weekend. We appreciate you guys stopping by. Like I said, have yourselves an absolutely wonderful weekend. Make sure to watch the World Series. It's going to be a lot of fun. I know it hurts.
Starting point is 00:57:47 But again, you have a villain to root for in the Los Angeles Dodgers. So let's all do that. Let's have a good time. Did I say Route 4? Yeah, you did. That's another damning piece of evidence, Damon. It's a really... You can't help himself, guys.
Starting point is 00:58:00 I guess I can't. I guess I can't help myself. But root against the Dodgers. That's the whole moral of the story today. So, of course, make sure to do that. And until then, like I said, make sure you guys all have yourselves a wonderful weekend. Thank you so much for your time. As you know, your time is your most valuable commodity.
Starting point is 00:58:18 And we always appreciate you sharing it with us. Cardinals are off this week. So at least that team can't hurt us for once. That's true. Something for sure. What a weekend. Again, R.A is right. I'm never beating the allegations.
Starting point is 00:58:32 No U of A, no Cardinals. What a weekend for your boy. What a weekend for Damon. He might just go to sleep after this show and not wake up until Monday. But, of course, until then, you guys have yourselves a wonderful weekend. Behave yourselves, R.A., mostly. Ryan says Dodger Derek is back. Again, I have made mistakes.
Starting point is 00:58:51 I definitely, that was probably one of the most egregious ones I've made. But thank you guys again for your time. We'll see you on Monday until then. go Blue Jays and remember kids baseball is fun but it's so much more fun when you keep your top executives in house
