Hello and welcome on in to another edition of the PHNX devax podcast right here on PHNX.
My name is Derek Montia.
Of course, I am your purple-haired mayor.
PHNX, this guy has normal hair.
He's still your vice mayor, though, and he's your thunderstick, Jesse Friedman.
That umpire scorecard.
That umpire's scorecard.
Have you ever seen anything that bad, Jesse?
I think I probably have.
I don't know if I've ever seen it get to two runs, like a full two runs favoring one
one team or another.
Let's just get into it.
I mean, we have a lot to talk about.
It's Mailbag Monday, but let's take a look at this umpire scorecard from yesterday's game.
The 9-8 loss to the Washington Nationals, obviously.
A lot of factors here.
Yesterday, we kind of just talked about the lack of offense,
the inability to get runners in scoring position converted into runs,
and obviously the way the bullpen kind of melted down.
But Roberto Ortiz deserves his bit of the blame here as well.
Would you say, Jesse?
I mean, yeah, I think there's about eight different people that you could blame for yesterday's Diamondbacks' loss.
And, yeah, Roberto Ortiz is probably one of them, plus 1.42 runs in favor of the Washington Nationals.
79% called strike accuracy.
That's pretty low.
Yeah, I mean, it's pretty clear if you, you know, if you're joining us here on video, you can see that the vast majority of those were pitches that were outside of the strike.
zone. So it wasn't really, he didn't really have very many instances at all of calling
pitches that were in the zone, um, out of the zone. But there were a number of pitches out
of the zone that he did call strikes. And unfortunately for the debacks, a number of them,
uh, went against them in this game. And it definitely felt like that early on. There were a few
called third strikes, especially early in this game, uh, that definitely went against,
against the diamond backs. And I don't really know honestly how they translate this into like a number
of runs.
Boo.
I'm going to just boo.
You can keep going.
You're just going to do.
Okay.
Boo.
You're corny.
You're whacked.
You should get a new job.
Boo.
I don't really know how you get from, you know, a certain number of missed calls to like, oh,
clearly the umpire favored the nationals by 1.42 runs in this game.
But, uh, but yeah, nonetheless, I mean, it was, it was pretty clear during the game
that there were a lot of missed calls and specifically against the diamondbacks.
If I'm not mistaken, the diamondbacks did lose by one run.
So that kind of does a, uh, uh,
Quite an impact in a close game.
Anytime you get an umpire scorecard that technically would have flipped the game the other direction,
I think I think that Major League Baseball should just go back and change the outcome of the game.
Absolutely, absolutely.
100%. I'm on board with that.
Clutch Canucks says Roberto O.G's.
Good call on that one.
Connor Mormon says 79% called strike accuracy.
What even is that?
We don't know.
But be better.
Be better.
And that's the point here.
The Diamondbacks relievers also could use being a little better, right?
They have dropped into the negatives and win probability added.
Do you want to explain exactly how that happened and what that means?
Yeah, yeah.
So we're hardcore nerding out here right off the top.
So, yeah, win probability added for those who don't know is basically any time a pitcher enters the game,
the outcomes of, you know, what happens while they're in the game.
and they either improve your team's chance of winning
or they decrease your chance of winning.
Or they've gotten to get up the chances of winning, yeah.
He's had a number of not great moments in the DBAX bullpen this year.
But yeah, so I've kind of been monitoring this number off and on throughout the season.
It's been positive for the vast majority of the season,
meaning that DBAX relievers have actually contributed more positively than negatively to the Dback's
chances of winning games up until, you know, that point of the season. However, given what's
happened the last two games, it is now flipped back into the negative. The Diamondbacks now rank
24th in the league and when probability added for their bullpen. So no matter what way you look at it,
Derek, you're kind of back where you were last year of like, yeah, this Diamondbacks bullpen is
clearly a weakness of the team. And it's still early, you know, there's still time for for guys to get back
on track and, you know, maybe write the ship a little bit. But what we've seen so far on the whole
is not good.
And that sucks because we were kind of excited about the direction that this bullpen was taking.
Obviously, it's still not melting down in the same way that we saw them melt down so often last season.
But with the taxed bullpen right now, the question still remains, what are the Diamondbacks going to do?
There's no moves that have been made as of yet.
We were expecting maybe to see one and we could still see one before game time, but it seems like it's pretty late.
now and we might not see any kind of moves being made, but who knows, they might not just
have made it official yet. We'll see if there's any announcements about anybody being added to the
clubhouse or the locker room here shortly. But on the minor league side of things, D-BAC's
Hillsborough-Hops, I guess you could say. High A Hillsborough-Hops manager, Ronnie Gowgenick,
again, makes history as not only one of the first female coaches in baseball, but now she's
she has actually coached in a game.
Two female coaches have coached on the field at the same time making history.
This is Ronnie from the hops and Ashley Stevenson from the Canadian.
So just still wonderful things happening within the organization.
And I mean, if you've never heard players talk about Ronnie,
it's kind of incredible the impact she has on so many of them
because everybody just has wonderful things to say about her as a coach, as a manager.
she's definitely very, very well praised in the organization.
Yeah, she really is.
And yeah, this is a pretty crazy moment.
I mean, you've got a game entirely managed by two female coaches.
It's something that, you know, not that long ago.
A lot of people probably would have thought that was just impossible
and would have laughed in your face that could ever happen.
We're told that this scoreboard is on its way to Cooperstown,
that it will be displayed in the Hall of Fame.
Absolutely, as it should.
As it should.
So congratulations to Ron.
and, of course, the hops still continue to be one of the best organizations within minor league baseball.
So proud to have them as part of the Diamondbacks organization.
Meanwhile, on the side of maybe not being so proud about your baseball team and your organization,
the Padres just decided to choose violence against the Dodgers and mostly Clayton Kershaw.
And let's be honest, Jesse, things did not go well for them.
I mean, you could make a case that they did.
You can see it on your screen here.
This is this is the...
Why did they do that to this man?
Like, that is...
They did Clayton Courtshot dirty.
That's a pretty bold move.
That's a Photoshop, right?
Like, they use the stretch feature to make his mouth.
Like, he's never looked like that in actual real life, right?
Oh, that's...
That's low class.
The only game that the Padres won in this series was this game against Clayton
Kershaw.
Clayton Kershaw did not pitch well at all on Friday.
and the Padres were able to win that game.
And then afterwards, they lost the next two.
So there's two ways to look at it.
You could make the case that, you know, they shouldn't have done this.
They wound up losing the series.
Clearly, it didn't work.
Or you could make a case that maybe they should have done it with all of the Dodgers starting pitchers
over the entire weekend because they didn't win on Saturday and Sunday.
They definitely had that one prepared beforehand, though.
That was it.
I don't know if that was the best decision.
Like we've talked about, the baseball gods are watching it all times.
You've got to make sure that you appease the baseball gods,
like the pirates sending the best story in baseball back down to the minors.
They might not win another baseball game.
I don't know.
But speaking of winning baseball games,
Zach Gowan is starting today against the Miami Marlins.
And honestly, continues to just be one of the best pitchers in the National League.
So I expect him to maintain that against his favorite team to pitch against.
which is Jazz Chisholm and his former mates over at the Miami Marlins.
He's only made two starts against the Marlins, but they've gone pretty well.
Zach Gallen has gone 2 and 0 with a 1.38 ERA.
The D-backs have, of course, won both of those games.
So, yeah, generally this has been a recipe for success for the Diamondbacks
when Zach Gallen is pitching against his former team.
Definitely seems like he pitches with a little bit of extra fire.
Oh, yeah.
Especially when Jazz is the box.
Oh, yeah.
So hopefully we get to see.
the Jazz Chisholm Zach Gallen matchup again again tonight.
But yeah, it's like Jazz traded him to the Diamondbacks.
You know what I mean?
Like the Jazz is just an instant bystander in all of this as well.
But Gallant really hasn't walked a batter since April 10th, which doesn't even seem possible.
Yeah.
How is that even something that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, he's done for that long.
That's incredible.
He's gone 30 straight innings without walking a batter.
And he has 46 strikeouts.
since his last walk.
So yeah,
I know Zach Allen wasn't quite up to par
with, you know,
the very high standard
that he set for himself in recent days.
He wasn't quite that guy in Texas.
But on the whole,
he is still,
you know,
this is still a pretty insane streak.
It's not,
it's not the scoreless inning streak
that we had going into his last start.
But,
uh,
yeah,
Zach Allen just apparently doesn't really walk guys anymore.
And that was kind of the one thing when he first came up to the big
leagues.
He was still walking guys in his first couple
years in the majors. And he was really good despite that. But this year he has a walk rate of like
3%, which is nothing. I mean, that's walking one out of every 30 batters you face, which is incredibly
just incredible. So, uh, so yeah, we'll see if Zach Allen is able to continue that tonight
against the Marlins. Some people mocked like the record he set when he started his career with three
runs, giving up three runs or less for the second street that he did, right? But that's still an
impressive stat. When the one thing you're looking for from a young
pitcher making his debut in the major leagues is consistency.
And Gallen has just been consistent.
He has rough patches like he started off the year not so, you know, not, not with everything
so tight.
But this was definitely a weird like spring training with the WBC, even though he wasn't
involved with it.
Merrill Kelly obviously got out of the gate slow due to it.
Zach Gallen just seemed to not really, he got a slow start because he didn't really get a
lot of spring training games under his belt, I don't believe.
A lot of his stretching out was done kind of in the back few.
and things like that, right?
So, I mean, once Gallen got on track,
he's just been the most consistent pitcher
for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
When we looked at the schedule ahead,
obviously, we had the Miami Marlins
at one point kind of penciled in
as one of the most more difficult opponents
that they might face in this easy month of May.
But now it's turned out that the Marlins
kind of come back down to Earth.
They have scored the fewest runs in baseball,
which is surprising at 116 runs.
Because they seem like,
that they were very exciting team, but they do have very good pitching, obviously.
Yeah, that's really what's kept them afloat. I don't really know, frankly, how they've, I mean,
yeah, they're minus 56. Like the Marlins have the worst run differential in the National League,
and somehow they're only one game under 500. So close games. Yeah, yeah, their bullpen has been,
has been good, and they have some starting pitchers who've done some good things. The debacks will
see Jesus Luzardo in game two of this series. He's been especially good for them. So, yeah,
this is no walk in the park.
If you're the D-VAC,
this is probably still a better baseball team
than the Royals and the Rockies and the Nationals.
Yeah, for sure.
But, yeah, the Marlins are still very beatable.
And I think they had a five-game losing streak
up until yesterday when they won.
So, yeah, this is still a team
that you can absolutely do some damage against.
And it's a team that on paper is very much due
to continue losing some games.
It's not often you see a team
with a minus 56 run differential,
at this point in the season somehow only one game under 500.
They're literally averaging to lose by almost two runs per game.
And somehow they're basically winning as much as they're losing despite that.
So yeah, it's weird.
Anyway, the Diamondbacks, again, need to use this as an opportunity, obviously,
to jump on an opponent that has struggled right now or struggled recently, right?
And we talked about getting greedy and, you know, especially not taking any opponents this month lightly.
despite how easy their schedule might be,
just due to the fact that this is the time that they really need to feast
and try to get as many wins as they can against,
you know,
especially a team like this,
the Marlins that did beat them the last time they played each other.
So hopefully Zach Gallen can get them off to a strong start in game one.
And they do have a very strong trio going in this series of not only Zach Gallen,
but also Brandon Fott and Merrill Kelly.
Here are the probabilities for that series.
And the big question mark, obviously being Brandon fought in game two
and how he is going to bounce back from a fairly difficult debut in Texas.
Clutch-Kinnock brings up another good point.
The debacks do get back-to-back lefties to start this series
with Braxton, Garrett, and Hesius Lozardo.
So, yeah, not ideal the debacks.
Despite all the moves they made in the off-season,
they have continued to perform better against right-handed pitchers
than against lefties.
So that doesn't necessarily bode well for them.
But yeah, you still feel pretty good about your chances in this series.
Zach Allen, Brandon fought Merrill Kelly.
That's about as good as it gets for the debacks right now as far as their starting
rotation.
And yeah, that Tuesday game with Brandon fought, that's going to be a big one.
I think that's a good opportunity for him to bounce back against, like we said before,
a team that has scored the fewest runs in all of baseball up until this point in the season.
So a very, very big contrast from Brandon Faw's last start when he was facing one of the best, you know, top five offenses in all of baseball.

Make a round, let's go.
My mailbox, always something interesting in my mailbox.
I try to get to everything in my mailbox.
And then once in a while there's a letter that makes me go, wow, wow, my mailbox.
All right, first question comes from our buddy Michael McDermott, who I had a delightful time sitting next to at the game yesterday.
He looked up Lord his stats for me based on my purple hair and when it got died.
So I thank him for that.
And he wants to know higher strikeout rate this season.
Zach Gallen or Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Jesse, take it away.
Oh, this is actually a very good question.
So up to this point in the season,
Jazz Chisholm has a 35.5% strikeout rate,
which is extremely high.
Yes.
Zach Gallen has a 35.2% strikeout rate.
Oh, my God.
It's an actual close race.
Yeah, this is very, very close.
If you look at last year, Jazz Chisholm, was it?
27.4%, which is still high, and Gallen, his strikeout rate on the amount was 26.9%.
He almost had him.
So, yeah, I mean, both last year and so far this year, I guess your answer would probably
be the Jazz Chisholm will have the higher strikeout rate of the two.
But I don't know.
It's, I mean, it really is interesting.
I think over their careers, Jazz Chisholm is like a 29.4%.
Gallon is like a 28%, something like that.
Gallin's strikeout rate has increased significantly this season.
He's gotten more whiffs on the change-up,
which has really helped him strike out more guys.
But Jazz Chisholm is also striking out way more this season than he has in the past.
Put Zach Gallen on the cover of MLB, the show, you cowards.
Do it right now.
Rectify this mistake.
All right.
What else we got, Damon?
What's your answer?
Oh, my answer?
No, I think Zach Gallin will have a higher strikeout rate.
I think Jazz has to, 35.
And a half percent.
Are you shitting me?
Like he's got to get better.
He's got to come back down more below 30.
Gallons probably will come down too because I mean 35.2 is very hard to maintain over the course of a full season.
But yeah, you could make a pretty viable case for either.
I'm going to go with Chisholm, but it's really close.
I'm sure we threw it on the screen.
But as Gabriel said, D-BACs won the trade.
That's confirmed.
At this point, it's not really that.
I mean, even if you love Chisholm and you think he's going to.
to bounce back and I'm sure there's a lot of people who do. He had a great season last year
despite the injuries. Still pretty clear that you would rather have Zach Gallen. I mean, he has been,
like we said before, arguably the best pitcher in the National League up to this point in the season.
You're going to take that over, you know, a pretty solid but kind of oft injured second baseman,
which is sort of what jazz chisholm has been so far. And you know who always has to think about this
is the St. Louis Cardinals that traded away both Sandy Alconcant. They're the real. And Zach Gallen and the
same tray for Marcel Azuna.
What do we got, Damon? What else we got?
Gabriel asked, will the offense pitching and defense ever click at the same time during
this season for a prolonged period?
Or is it just growing pains that they can't all be good at once?
I hate that because that's exactly what it feels like.
Like there hasn't, there have been maybe two complete games this season where you were like,
damn, this team, you know, the bullpen came in, they shut the door, starting pitching was
solid. A lot of times it's been on, I'd say Merrill Kelly starts, kind of where Merrill Kelly was
was good. I know there's a couple of those games, but even then, you probably couldn't say
everything was perfect. There was probably still some things that you could work on, right?
I think that's a good thing because honestly, if they were just clicking on all cylinders
and they had this record, I don't know if that'd be very good, right? Like, they have had a lot of
false. They have had a lot of things going wrong and they still haven't reached that 20 win
mark yet. And they should have gotten there yesterday, right? So I do think that they have a lot of
things to work on. But there is a lot of potential there. And I don't feel like they don't have the parts.
I feel like they just might need to move some things around. We talked yesterday about maybe, you know,
calling some of the young arms that they still have down there. Mostly Dre Jameson is
potentially being an option in the bullpen. They still have, you know, Carlos Vargas and Justin Martinez
and a few other young arms that are in the minors that could end up, you know,
somehow getting on track and helping this team win ball games.
But it doesn't feel like it's very far off.
It definitely feels like they have clicked.
All of those pieces have clicked at times.
They're just like you said, not clicking all at once.
Yeah, it does feel like they've had a lot of games that they've won with their pitching
and games that they've won with their offense.
Not necessarily games where it's like, wow, this was just a full-on, like,
just demonstration of excellence from the diamond backs across the board.
We haven't seen that many of those games.
So, yeah, I mean, I think it's part of just being a team that's kind of right in the middle right now in a lot of ways.
The debacks have been well above average offensively, but they've been sort of well below average on the pitching side, at least as a team.
Zach Allen and Merrill Kelly are very much running the show for the starting rotation.
We've talked about how the remainder of the rotation outside of those two has.
had an ERA hovering around seven for a number of weeks now.
That's something that really has to improve in order for the debacks to be able to have all
these things clicking at the same time, right?
You might get a game here or there where with Zach Gallen or Merrill Kelly on the mound,
you know, your offense happens to be on point that day and, you know, you get a couple good
bullpen inning.
So there's easy potential for you to have a few games here and there where everything is
clicking.
But over the course of a longer period of time, there are some.
flaws on this team, right? The bullpen isn't
all that great. The rest of the rotation
isn't all that great. There are some things that need to happen
for the debacks to be able to get to that point.
What else we got there, Damon?
Next question comes to tell
the journeyed into the dissent
on Twitter and asks, what do you think
the realistic chance of a major move before
deadline? We had a few questions
about moves before the deadline, who the Diamondbacks might give up and
what the chances are. I think the chance
is good. I think the chance is very
likely. I felt like Mike Hazen was aggressive about that when asked about that. When asked about
the position that he hopes the Diamondbacks are in, he's talked about not trading in major league players
anymore for minor leaguers. Like those days are behind them and they are firmly in the position of
if they are going to trade, perhaps trading some of their prospects away for major league talent
that can help this team win now. So I feel like it's likely. I just don't know the level.
of move that they're willing to make
and how much they're willing to give up.
It doesn't seem like they're willing to give up
very much from the major league roster
and kind of with the way things have gone
with injuries and such this year
and some of the guys kind of
having a recession in their offensive numbers.
I don't know if they're willing to give up
any of their major league talent at this point.
Goldie coming back at the trade deadline.
That's what Gabriel says.
There you go.
Just stop it. Don't do that to me.
Yeah, I think if the debacks are trending,
continue to trend in in the direction that they've been in so far,
which is that they are a team that's in the playoff mix,
then you will definitely see this team make a move at the trade deadline.
I don't think there's any chance they don't.
Whether it's a significant move, that's another matter.
It feels like it needs to be pitching.
Like it feels like it has to be.
Yeah, it does feel like it would need to be pitching.
A lot of people have talked about like, well, could you trade for like a number three starter right now?
Maybe you could do that at the trade deadline.
Maybe.
I don't think there's any chance of making a move like that in the near future.
And it would have to be like some sort of like honestly like probably expiring contract that you're basically going to be end up trading for some sort of rental for the rest of the season, which isn't the worst case scenario.
If the Diamondbacks are in a position to grab somebody like that maybe a bigger name at that point, that would be incredible.
I mean, but you'd have to trade a lot.
Like if it's really like a number three level starter, it's tough.
I mean, first of all, it has to, this number three starter has to be on a team that's
actually going to make a trade, right?
Especially with 12 teams going to the postseason now.
There's a lot of teams that are still in the mix, right?
Even if they're probably not going to make it, they still want to go forward and try.
So you got to find, you know, a guy who's on a team that sucks.
And you've got to find a trade package from the debunk.
standpoint that you'd actually be willing to give up the debacks farm system is very top heavy so if you
really want to make a splash it's basically are you willing to trade jordan luller or aren't you you know
like there just isn't that much depth beyond those guys there's a few there's you know there's blake walson
there's slate sikoni uh you know there's rice jarvis there's other guys that have value but if you're
really trying to make a splash those guys aren't going to you're not going to package three or four of those
guys and get it done, you would have to trade, you know, like a Drew Jones or a Jordan Lawler,
which I don't think anyone has any interest in. So making a splash, I think, is going to be
really hard for this team at the trade deadline. And it's something that I kind of doubt they would
be interested in. But do they need to make a splash? No, I don't think they do. Right. Like what,
what they need is Brandon thought to be a serviceable third man in the rotation, right? Zach Davies to
come back, Ryan Nelson or Tommy Henry to step up as their fifth starter. Right. One of those guys,
is Ryan Nelson, Dre James, and Tommy Henry in the bullpen.
Maybe at that point you add, you know, maybe a fairly good arm that you can get from another
team, but like a bullpen arm, an arm that a lot of people isn't going to be like a big name.
Yeah, you're more likely to trade.
You're definitely more likely to go get a reliever than a starter.
Yeah.
All right.
Well, that's settled.
We figured that out for the Diamondbacks.
They just follow our blueprint.
Trade Drew Jones for Sandy Alcanta.
Oh, man.
No, I don't like it.
All right.
let's go next question what else we got
Jacob at Jacob Schulte
asked if Bryce Harper pushed Ken
Kendrick in the playoffs would we
be as mad as Jokic pushing
Ishbia last night? Let's get
into it Jesse because we need
answers. First, no.
The answer is no and you knew that
and asking that question. You all
knew that, you all could read that question
and you know the answer is no we're not
going to get as mad at Matt
Ishbia. Now however, however, I will
say Ken Kendrick
can hold his own.
So I don't know if you want to go mess with Ken Kendrick,
first of all.
You might get,
Ken might have gotten thrown out of the game
because he might have jab back
if that situation happened.
I will say this, though.
Matt Ishbia is a new owner.
So there is something very much to be said
about him still not having
the ire of fans yet, right?
Like, I'm not saying,
like most owners eventually get to a point
unless they deliver multiple championships
during their tenure just completely please their fan base,
which is just almost impossible at times, right?
There is going to come a point that an owner has owned a team for so long
that you come to load them.
You don't like them anymore.
I don't know if that's necessary.
I think there are some owners that are just willing to,
willing to spend copious amounts of money.
And even if you don't go out and win a championship,
you still like that owner because the reason you're not winning is not because of them.
It's because of maybe more.
So your general manager or some of the specific moves that you've made, right?
I don't know.
Like if you go like Peter Seidler, I know he's newer in San Diego.
We saw him taking pictures with Padres fans in the stands.
Yeah, that was, I mean.
But again, if the Padres don't win a World Series in the next few years, they're still going to love that man.
I don't know.
I don't know about that.
Well, because they might not like AJ Preller, but they're going to like Peter Sidler because he's spending stupid amounts of money on his same fault.
You're like talking about like Steve Cohen, right?
but I'm just saying like there comes a point where unless that translates to winning,
you are going to eventually.
I don't know if I agree with that.
You think you think Mets fans are going to hate Steve Cohen if the Mets don't?
But it's not his problem.
I don't mean right away.
I'm not talking about like even in the next five years,
but I'm just saying there always comes a point where an owner is going to draw the ire of fans
because the owner becomes the blame, right?
As we know.
I think it's more the GM.
I think teams hate their GM before they were.
would hate their owner. As long as their owner is holding up there, the owner's job is just to put up
the money in a lot of situations. GMs come and go and if the owner has like a culture of losing,
I think people really start to have disdain for the owner. And I don't know, I don't think it matters
if the moves, because then they just go back and they talk about how the moves didn't work out,
even if it's stuff like injuries or whatever, right? You're just going to come back and question it.
And like he said, if the GMs have come and gone, you're just going to eventually blame it on the owner.
It's like the way that because Ken Kendrick has a card collection, everybody says he's using all of his money from the team on his card collection, right?
I mean, that's the way people say.
Even though it's completely not true and not the case, that's the perception that people have of Ken Kendrick, right?
So back back to this question that we were asked.
First of all, how would this altercation happen exactly?
Bryce Harper right now is limited to deaching for the Philadelphia Phillies.
I mean, I guess by the playoffs, I think they might be able to have him.
back out in the field, but he just had Tommy John's surgery.
He is not allowed to play in the field.
Also, Ken Kendrick, if he is at a Diamondbacks game,
is not going to sit like along the right field baseline.
Like, he is going to sit behind a home plate in one of the nice padded seats.
Oh, so you're not,
with a massive backstop in front of it.
You're suggesting Bryce Harper is it a monster enough to go off into the crowd
and go after him and attack him like that?
No.
You would have to run across like multiple sections at Jays Field
in order to get to Ken Kendrick.
I don't know if I see this happening.
Playoff game, right?
NLDS.
We're playing the Phillies.
Ken Kendrick comes down to the photo well
to just get a closer look of what's going on, right?
There comes an altercation between balls and strikes.
Bryce Harper isn't involved in the altercation,
but he's in the on-deck circle.
So thus now, he's close to Kendrick.
Here's Kendrick's comments and goes over there and approaches him.
Maybe an umpire gets involved.
I don't know.
There's definitely not a scenario.
where this would ever happen, but still, the point is, is that we want to build a statue of
Matt Ishbia already out front of Footprint Center.
And so he's beloved and few owners are like that, right?
I mean, it's going to take a long time for us to not feel that way about Matt Ishby.
I think Matt Ishbia really, because, like, I think Suns fans already have liked Matt Ishbia.
I mean, like, you know, going out and pulling off the Kevin Durant trade and everything,
even though I think there are some Suns fans who are a little more hesitant about that trade at this point.
He's still, Matt Ishbitt.
Ishbia, like, coming into this moment, I think, was still widely, widely liked.
Not necessarily loved, but liked by Suns fans.
That move yesterday, I think just, now I think some fans love him.
Yeah, I think Suns fans absolutely love him.
I was going to say, does an altercation like that cement an owner as, as a legend, right?
I mean, probably, yeah, especially if, especially if you are a whole five foot nothing
standing up to someone that is an absolute Frankenstein.
Is that short?
He's a little fella.
He's not.
college, right?
Yeah.
Five six, is he?
No, I don't know.
Five nine.
Five nine?
Really?
Wow.
He's a smaller dude.
The point being is that Jokic is a, is a kaiju.
He's a gigantic sea monster that came out of the ocean and learned how to play basketball, right?
So, like, the fact that he just stood up to him in any way is damn impressive.
Isaiah Thomas getting thrown out.
That's hilarious for simply, like, trying to not let himself get squished by Joghij.
Meanwhile, there was the other guy that kind of looked like.
me a little bit like a little chubbier Derek that got thrown out for putting his hand on the guy
that he had no business doing that uh that wasn't your fight you think ken kendrick can flop like uh like
mad hsb yeah i don't know i don't know matt isbia has had at least a few months of watching
all the basketball players do it right so i don't know baseball doesn't have the same flopping that
basketball does i'm not sure if he's uh if he's familiar with that but i'll tell you if you want to
check out uh his flopping skills in person you can join us for our p hnx dbacks

we do have to give a thanks to our friends at Moore Furniture
for hooking us up with furniture so comfortable
that I fall asleep in during D-Bax games.
That's like, I don't know any other confirmation
that you need other than that they're so comfortable.
that I can't keep my eyes awake while the bullpen blows a game.
But check out all of the wonderful furniture that have over at morefurniture.com.
Hook up your den.
Saul Bookman right now is over there building us a third studio right now with his bare hands.
It's just, does your GM do that?
Does your GM just build a studio with his bare hands?
I don't know.
It's kind of impressive, but he's got the whole like, you know, like he's got the tool belt on
and everything.
But he has some amazing new furniture for more furniture to go in there.
So very excited about that.
getting completed and you can save big on the best furniture in the valley when you head to more
furniture.com. Now we got some more mailbag Monday questions. Damon Welts we got. Hanley at R. Y N underscore
Hanley H&LY asked, has there been any improvement on Derek's end from dapping up Gurriel Jr.
Because he is so hot right now and maybe he has all the infinity stones. That is the part of this
agreement that I am not really thrilled with right now, Jesse, is ever since
I dodged my hair.
Guriel has had superhuman powers, right?
And then shit got crazy.
We met, we came in contact.
Damon, you got that video of us.
We actually, we dapped up in person.
And that's what he's referring to right here.
This is when this moment happened.
Purple power.
Look at all that purple.
My God.
There's just so much, so much purple in one shot, right?
It does feel like it should be a two-way street, right?
It does.
It feels like there should have been.
a transfer of power. If Lord is to sit in all these homers, like you ought to at least be pretty
decent at Wiffleball or something. Right. Right. I was terrible with Cornell the other night,
brother. I was not good. I don't know. Maybe I will be better next time now. I don't know where
I, where do I get the payoff on my end? Like, he's done nothing but hit home runs since that moment.
So I just, I want to know. And then like, he has the audacity when asked to compare our hair
to say that I need more volume.
And I mean, you can hear it from himself.
Here's what he had to say.
In your honor, it gave very well.
It fits him very well.
You're all right?
It's a bit.
It's a little bit more voluble, but it's okay.
It's okay.
I agree.
Again, telling me something I don't know,
as if I have the power, like a play.
potato factory to push more air out of my head.
I would love it to have more volume, brother.
Trust me.
When was the last time you actually like swung a bat?
Like maybe it is.
Okay.
So it probably is your baseball skills that have drastically improved and you just,
you just don't know because you haven't swung a bat in like multiple years.
We need to get you out during batting practice today at Chase Field, Derek, and see what you can do.
I am wearing the Serbientas jersey.
I'm already in the way there.
Let's go.
All right.
Here's a bigger question, though, Jesse, and it's our next question.
Damon, throw it up there.
Yes or no.
If the Diamondbacks have a winning made, Jesse should die his hair, Sedona Red.
The answer is yes.
Yes.
The answer is yes.
Correct.
Correct.
The answer is correct.
Or teal.
Think about how teal.
Imagine we had a purple fucking teal going.
That would be the most fire shit in Diamondbacks podcast history.
We had a purple and teal thing going on.
Let's go.
Jesse, you would kill red hair.
He would.
Absolutely.
We would clash so terribly.
We would.
I would.
I would all this red.
My hair doesn't,
my hair would be a little more confusing with it because like your hair kind of naturally
separates like you can do the top purple and then everything else is black and it's okay.
Like I just have like this mop of a head of hair.
Yeah.
So you would have to,
you probably just have to make the whole thing red.
And I just,
Elizabeth said no,
he needs to go teal.
So Elizabeth's already on board with it.
Everybody's trying to down my beard teal.
So we're getting your hair teal.
We're figuring something out.
So, uh, Gabriel says 20 to 5 and he dies his hair.
Look, we've thrown around 20 and 5 number a lot in May.
I'm going to say this.
Uh-oh.
I'll get a tattoo.
Okay.
I'll get a tattoo at 20 and 5.
I don't know what it's going to be of.
I mean, 20 and 5 is like, it was one thing to be over 500 in April.
20 and 5 in May.
Yeah.
They've already lost.
They've already lost.
They've already lost too.
Got to get the wagon tattooed on you.
Like just with the wagon with the D-Backs A if they go 20 and five.
The word wagon or like a little stagecoach wagon like or like a red red rider wagon with
Dax logo on it.
I don't know.
We'll figure this out.
I mean,
I should probably go the safer route.
Everybody's just wanting me to get like teal highlights or a beard.
That's that's easier.
But yeah,
two losses this month.
Yeah,
the DVACs are three and two so far in May.
25 I'll get a tattoo.
They would have to go 17 and 3.
17 and 3.
17 and 3. 20 and 5 I will get a tattoo.
I'm throwing it out there.
What?
Do we know what the tattoo is?
You're going to give some actual specifics here?
I mean, I think it will develop it as it goes along.
We'll figure out a logo.
Maybe the snake with the baseball in its mouth.
I kind of like that one.
I think I'd be willing to have that permanently stand by the
tattoo is no joke like that.
I mean, that's going to be there for a while.
Yeah, I mean, I'm putting it out there.
It's not the purple hair.
We're not cutting it out.
You know what I mean?
Like, come on.
Let's get real here.
We're getting serious.
Again, tattoo for 20 and 5.
What are we going to do when they make the playoffs?
I am going to just.
talk myself into the worst scenario.
I should just not know.
You're going to look incredible by the end of the season.
Yeah.
Elizabeth says, D-Backs win the World Series and you get Jesse's face tattooed on you.
There we go.
Never.
Never, as long as I fucking live.
Never.
All right.
What else we got, David?
Sean McNally, who we promise not to forget this time, asked, my mailback Monday question
was kind of addressed here on Twitter by Jesse Friedman.
You have a definite number one ace and a hands-down number two.
and what is your general opinion on three through five, please rank,
and is it fair to say Debacks might look to trade for a true number three?
Again, we talked about that a little bit earlier that I don't think that that's going to really
be feasible for a true number three.
And I do think it's going to come from one of these four young guys.
I mean, you have to give pitchers a time to develop.
And again, we talked about how Dre and Ryan kind of set unnecessarily high expectations
with the way they performed at the end of last season.
True.
So now when guys don't, you know, perform at that level when they, when they have their debut, it seems like there's something instantly wrong with them and they need to be sent back down.
They really just need some more time with shirtless.
No, Gabriel, no.
I was wondering why David, David's dying back here behind the back.
I'm just imagining Derek in like a firefighter outfit with like suspenders, like taking a picture.
With the Dalmatian?
Yeah.
But Dalmatian is involved.
We're doing it.
June. Okay. It's hot in June. It's fire. It's fire. So ranking those three, the three through five.
Yeah. I think fought still. Fought is still number one for me. Ryan Nelson, I think, is number two. And then
Tommy Henry is probably number three. I'm going to throw Davies in there probably at like four is what
I feel. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Oh, that's actually interesting. Yeah. Once Davies comes back, where would he fit in
there? Yeah, he would probably be after after fought for me. I would.
say. But again, we don't, I mean, we don't know that much about Brandon Fott in the big leagues.
He might continue to struggle like he did in his first outing. I personally am not expecting that. I still
think he's the third best starter on this team. All right. What else we got, Damon? What will
debacks do to fix the bullpen fast? Comes from Bill Loski, B. Loski won on Twitter. I don't know.
Fix of the bullpen fast is what they kind of need to do. I think that we talked about a potential move
being made today and that
still hasn't happened so we're not sure if it
will happen but it feels like it needs to happen
during the series because
their bullpen seems fairly taxed right now
Yeah the move would just
Be to get another bullpen arm it wouldn't
You know wouldn't necessarily be
To fix the bullpen
Yeah I don't know if it's going to fix something to call up an extra arm
From AAA it will be if you call up Dre Jameson
That is yeah that's we talked about that a little bit yesterday
I still I still do wonder if that's something to
debacks will explore at some point. If Davies gets back healthy, you know, if Fought starts to perform
well, if maybe Nelson picks things up again, you might feel good enough about your rotation depth that
you're comfortable turning Jameson back into a reliever, which would be really weird for him. I mean,
you went from starter to reliever to starter. We're talking about converting him back to a reliever again.
But the debacks could probably do that, and it is something that Jameson had a lot of success with
early in the season. So in-house, I think making that move is the clearest, you know,
the clearest move you could make that might actually move the needle. Other than that,
a lot of their relievers in AAA are struggling. Justin Martinez, Carlos Vargas, Luis Frias,
I don't know if you've really seen quite enough from those guys to believe that they're going to
be able to pitch high leverage innings for you in the big leagues right now. So it's tough. It might
have to wait until the trade deadline, which goes back to what we were talking about earlier,
about that being the most likely area of improvement for this team.
You just kind of have to hope that between now and then,
they're able to hold things down and stay competitive in these games.
The thing about Dre Jameson was he just had a different attitude about going to the bullpen.
And he liked it.
He embraced it for sure.
And I think that being on the major league roster and helping this team win is a better position,
probably for him,
I probably think he would consider a better position than being a starter for the aases.
and that's no knock.
It's just that there's three very talented young guys ahead of them.
And who knows when he's going to get another opportunity to be a starting pitcher at a big league level,
whereas he could end up being a pretty electric reliever for this team in a role that they really need,
which is a long relief role.
They don't really have anybody that's doing that.
When they do kind of have some of those guys come out,
it can mess up their bullpen from the next few games because, you know,
that is going to be one arm that they are not going to,
you know, go back to once some of the relievers have thrown over 35, 40 pitches in an outing.
Maybe, yeah, maybe not like long reliever for Jameson, but just like like multi-inning, you know,
like like an inning in two thirds, like two and a third, you know, like kind of how the debacks
use Archie Bradley a couple years ago. You could really see Jameson being valuable in that role
as he showed early in the season. All right. What else we got, Damon?
Maggie Rutherford says, I miss Jake. When will he be back? Need that no-fly zone. We miss
Jake too. I was very sad
that Jake. Jake was very excited for me to dye
my hair purple. So that
was a bummer for me that he wasn't around.
I mean, he was talking shit to me and I loved
it. And I think Jake has been
doing fairly well in the miners,
which is what they were asking him to do,
what they were seeking
from him. It was rough
go when he first got down to Reno,
but I think he's gotten things back on track
recently. Yeah, he's
at 324, 400,
529 right now in Reno. So,
Pretty good numbers.
Not quite what he did last year, last year in several different stints with Reno.
Jake McCarthy at 369, 457, 596.
So that was sort of even another level, but he has been good in Reno.
But it's kind of the prototypical thing from Jake where he goes down and kind of gets right.
And then hopefully that can transfer up to the major league level like we saw it do last year when he got called back up.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean five walks, only four strikeouts and 40 played appearances.
So a lot of good signs from McCarthy.
And I don't think it will be terribly long.
It is a little tricky, though, to figure out how to do it, right?
There's still this looming need to send down a position player in order to get that eighth
bullpen arm back up, which I do think the debacks will have to do soon.
You still got Kyle Lewis coming off.
You've got Kyle Lewis who theoretically, we don't really have a timeline on that, but he should
be able to come back to the big leagues at some point if they want him.
Dominic Fletcher is another left-handed hitting outfield.
who has been arguably the D-back's best left-handed hitting outfielder outside of Corby Carroll.
So I don't know if you can really justify sending him down to go get Jake McCarthy.
So right now it's unclear.
It's complicated.
It is pretty complicated.
But with time, I think things will work out.
I think you'll see Jake McCarthy back up before too long.
When you have an outfield consisting of Lourdes-Gariel Jr. and Pave and Smith at the same time,
that's a little alarming considering the talent that you have.
And unless that was like a late game scenario or something like that, that's not the best.
That's not what Tori wants considering the talent they have.
Jake definitely was an excellent, excellent defensive outfielder.
And that's something that's kind of overlooked here in him getting sent down because his absence has been noticeable.
He kind of, again, you just get used to Corby and Carol over there and left, Jake and right.
You know, you have a, or Jake in centerfield, you got, you know, Alec in centerfield, you got Jake and right.
whatever the case may be, but, you know, if you had all three guys out there and they were able to produce offensively at the plate and be as good as they are defensively, that outfield is so much better than any other options that they could have right now.
It's just with Alec Thomas struggling like the way he has, Jake Thomas struggling, or Jake McCarthy struggling, excuse me, they, you know, we're talking.
That's one way to fix.
That's one way to fix the problem is just turn them into one person.
They only get, it's only one roster spot that way.
That makes a lot of sense.
It fixes a lot of things.
I hope to see Jake McCarthy back very soon
because, of course, defensively, that outfield is locked in.
And I don't know if the Diamondbacks get better than that.
But we are very excited, of course, to partner with our friends in Circle K.
I don't think it gets better than their snack options.
Don't miss, don't sleep on the Circle K brand snacks because I eat them every single day now,
and I just love them so much.
Also, look out soon for our Circle K strike.
