Starting point is 00:00:03 Let's go! Welcome in to another edition of the PHNX D-Backs podcast right here on PHNX. My name is Jared Montia. Inexplicably, I am known as the mayor of the city of Phoenix. For all the right reasons, it's known as Mr. Electric himself. Wait, do I? Do I still get that? Justin Martinez wasn't good enough tonight.
Starting point is 00:00:30 Yeah. I mean, I'm taking it. And they want, they want to start calling him wild. thing, which might be a little appropriate, but I think you deserve it more right now. But we are still riding high on a Diamondback sweep over the Texas Rangers. And yes, that Alec Thomas catch that was absolutely insane and fairly critical with the way Paul Seawald was pitching there in the ninth inning. But let's give credit where credit is due.
Starting point is 00:00:54 The Arizona Diamondbacks offense took an early lead, scoring three runs in the second game. And this win against the Rangers, they put them up early. and they put themselves up pretty much for good for the entire game. And it was, you know, a nice, I felt like this was a nice performance by the offense against a Texas Rangers team that honestly has. They haven't been very good lately, but they have been good this season. Yeah. And I mean, yeah, we were talking at points this year. I think it was one of the shows that you missed.
Starting point is 00:01:26 But Jesse and I talked about like the best duos in baseball, right? Pitching duos in baseball. And one of the teams that came up were the Rangers, and one of the reasons were because of John Gray. He's been, especially in the first half of the year, it was incredible. So for them to get some runs off of this team in general, but to get off John Gray, like, that's very encouraging. It was a nice balanced offensive attack, too. Nobody, it was a bit hard. I know some of you are going to be mad.
Starting point is 00:01:54 I'm just going to tell you now, Alec Thomas is not our king's tank, but he probably deserves to be with that catch that he made. But balanced effort from the team. Seven players had at least one hit. Four players had RBI. So this was one of those situations where nobody particularly stands out. But the team did a good job, I think, of kind of small-balling it in this one, right? Like just getting those singles, getting those hits, loading the bases. The bases felt loaded like quite a bit tonight, which is something that we really haven't seen from this team.
Starting point is 00:02:22 Have that many runners in scoring position. Shout out Tommy Fam for the biggest joke single of all time. That cashed me a parlay. Yeah. Love to see that. Big, big betting night for this game. Huge betting night. The strikeouts. Gallant 5 and a half strikeouts was downright disrespectful. Disrespectful at home, at Chase Field, the audacity. I don't understand how it's so low. But the offense again, runners in scoring position four for eight tonight.
Starting point is 00:02:46 So a great night offensively for them. But none of that matters because really they just needed one run with the way Zach Gallen was pitching at times. He did a lot one run, but Zach Gallen was just incredible. He remains incredible at Chase Field. Tonight he went six innings, which some people argued maybe, maybe Zach Gallen could have gone another inning, but he was at 90 pitches. Yeah, I mean, you kind of want, you wanted to go another inning because of, I mean, just the bullpen situation, right? You don't necessarily know, are capable of trusting anyone in the bullpen. So, or you don't know on a daily basis who you're going to get to trust in the bullpen. So when you got a guy like Gallen pitching the way Gallen was pitching, you kind of want to see him just keep doing that. But I understand.
Starting point is 00:03:29 why he didn't, right? He was at about 90 pitches or close to it. So, and ultimately they won. So I'm not going to sit here and nitpick for his choices in that sense. I think it would probably, I mean, in hindsight, if they won, it was the right decision.
Starting point is 00:03:41 So I'm going to take it. Yeah, absolutely. Gallin now has five, 10 or more strikeout games this season, 10 plus strikeout game, which sets a new career high. And he also is 11 and 1 at Chase Field in 12 starts. Pretty good. With six home runs allowed,
Starting point is 00:03:57 a 1.79 ER. and 103 strikeouts. Pretty good. Pretty damn good. Your 2003 National League's Cy Young winner. He really should be. I mean,
Starting point is 00:04:10 the only person that has more 10 plus strikeout gate, or there's a couple of guys that, I mean, he's tied for four. But really, Spencer Strider is the one guy running away with the strikeout race,
Starting point is 00:04:18 but his ERA and some of his other numbers don't really match Gallant's. Yeah, I mean, assuming that no one does anything crazy over the next month, whether that includes that Gellon falling off for, I don't know, Spencer Strider
Starting point is 00:04:29 throwing like three perfect games. Like, I feel like that's got to be Gown's award. I feel like it do. I feel like it do. Zach Gowlin, maybe we get Corbyn Carroll in here for a rookie of the year. Corbyn Carol, he's back, just like the Diamondbacks are back. But again, I'm just going to rip the band-aid off. Corbyn Carol is our King Snake for tonight.
Starting point is 00:04:49 Giselle, I'm sorry. Giselle. The whole chat is anti. Everybody is anti this. But Corby Carroll, two for three tonight. He had a run scored an RBI and one stolen base. And again, Corbin very much seems like he is back. You know, I mean, it feels like he's at least, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:06 he's at least being much more productive offensively than he was while he was in that scene. And that's good. I mean, it's definitely not a beggars. It's definitely like a beggars can't be choosing anything. I would like to see him start putting the ball over the fence again. Sure. That would be really nice. Sure.
Starting point is 00:05:17 I'm not going to say that he's back until that starts happening again. But it is nice to see him actually like he was kind of a bad baseball player there for a little bit, offensively at the very least. Like he was just not really much. of a contributor. So to see him actually be like not just a positive, but like a pretty significant contributor in a good offensive performance for this team. That is an encouraging sign.
Starting point is 00:05:38 I'm going to, wait, I'm going to push back against the chat here. I'm going to ride against the chat. So because Alec Thomas has one incredible catch that makes him the king snake, am I wrong here? I mean, it kind of saved the game. Okay, well, then fuck it. I'm going to say you're going to say you're wrong. Let's change it.
Starting point is 00:05:56 Let's change it. T.M. There you go. This is the Kingsman. The catch. The catch. There you go. You guys did it.
Starting point is 00:06:02 You got it. You got your way. That's how it should be. I agree. I agree. Alec Thomas saved the game. He's the best defensive center fielder in all baseball. I mean,
Starting point is 00:06:09 let's talk about it. Alec Thomas with probably the defensive play of the year. Yeah. The ninth inning, right? I mean, there was just something incredible about watching him actually catch that ball. That looked like it was going to be a double. Well,
Starting point is 00:06:24 yeah. It's incredible because you're watching it. And it's like you're kind of simute. being like, oh, this is a triple, a double, whatever, and also like, ah, but it's, it's, Alex Thomas, he'll get there. Like, as he was getting there, I was just like, oh, if he gets there, he's going to catch it. Like, I just felt good. Like, it just, it felt like it was good.
Starting point is 00:06:43 Michael had said it earlier in the chat, 70% of the earth is covered by water. The rest is covered by Alec Thomas. That's a bar, first off. Secondly, like, yeah, I think we need to start having a conversation. And I know it's not going to happen on a national scale. What conversation? He's one of the best, if not the best defensive center fielders in baseball. Yeah, he's incredibly good.
Starting point is 00:07:01 I think he's firmly in that conversation. Just the plays he makes are incredible. We are all witnesses, right? We are all witnesses. We're all witnesses. The king. Throw it up there. The greatness that is.
Starting point is 00:07:12 Alec Thomas. This is the, this needs to be up in downtown Phoenix. I don't know how it's not. I'm also very concerned. I wish we had unlimited money. I am very concerned about giving into the chat like this. I feel like it sets a bad precedent.
Starting point is 00:07:24 I mean, we gave in the, no, I guess we're giving it. We made cogs. Damon was in motion. to be making that graphic before. Yeah, I mean, I had sent a message to.
Starting point is 00:07:32 I was changing it. I mean, you're really pulling the curtain back here. I mean, we looked cool there for a second that we got it up there that fast, but now here you are just ruining it. I just wanted to say that... You just want to take credit for it. He wanted your credit.
Starting point is 00:07:48 I want to say that he deserved it. And I'm also writing you. All right. An announcement to make. I will take credit. An announcement to make, Alex Thomas has officially been added to the international sex symbols list. Oh, yes.
Starting point is 00:08:01 Do you have the list? Should we update the people on what the list is? I don't want to know what the list. Are you sure they don't want to know what the list? It's an great list. You have Gerald on there three times? Again, I think you're, go ahead. That's fucking wild. Read the list from top to bottom. Read his got that list. G. Juan Bay, Baxter, Gerald Borgay.
Starting point is 00:08:20 Baxter. Julio Rodriguez, Gabe Kapler, Tori Lovolo, Jalen Hertz, Joe Perra. Cho Hay O'Tonni, J. Rod, again. Gerald again. Gerald three times. That's fucking ridiculous. One Gera who's right. I can't, I can't.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Yeah. Where's the lies on the list? I can't even do this. There's not a lie to be seen. Oh, man. You're just mad, you're not on it. I am mad. I'm not on it.
Starting point is 00:08:42 But Alex Thomas. Fucking wear a speedo like Baxter and we can talk. Fine. We'll fucking make that happen tomorrow. Alec Thomas, though, definitely deserves to be on that list. Not only is he really sexy, but that catch, very sexy. And it ended up being fairly critical considering that Paul Seawald. struggled there in the ninth inning to close uh close things down thomas covered a hundred feet
Starting point is 00:09:03 in five point three seconds 100 feet yeah and steve said on the broadcast and we were kind of joking about it like you can't put value on defense and we're like yeah you can't it's amazing it's awesome i want it all i'll pay anything for but like seriously like it's it is hard to kind of put into to like numbers into like real concrete value what alec thomas provides for this team the runs he has prevented by just being a better athlete than most people playing in the outfield of Major League Baseball. How about forget in Major League Baseball on this team, right? Well, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:37 They've tried a lot of guys out there. And Corbyn Carroll, who's an excellent athlete, would not have made this play. Even with his speed and everything. Jake McCarthy wouldn't have made this play with him. Well, that's the thing. Because everyone talks about like this outfield in the speed, Alec Thomas is the slow one. Like based on baseball, Savant, just on top. Yeah, like he is the slow one out of.
Starting point is 00:09:57 those three, which makes it even more impressive. It goes like it's not just about being fast, right? Like it is he is capable of reading a ball off of that off the bat in ways that I have seen very few major league players do. It is not an easy thing to do, especially when it's kind of hit right at you, which obviously this catch wasn't, but like it's not easy. And it's that playing at a field at this park is not necessarily easy. No, it's a nightmare. It's weird with that overhang. Overhang, right? Like so. And he does it better than I think damn near anyone. baseball would. Yeah, he really does. He just, he judges the ball well. I mean, even when he doesn't make those catches, the way he plays it when it careens off the wall or bounces somewhere in there.
Starting point is 00:10:35 It's not easy. He does an excellent job with that. But like I said, Paul Seawall did make things very exciting in the ninth inning and not in a fun way for us. But he got a cute smile. He loaded the bases. He smiled. That smile was worth a million dollars. The team's reaction to Alex Thomas's catch. Yeah, the Lordis's reaction. Kevin Eagle, like the tip of the cap, Right. But Paul Seawald, yeah. Unbelievably has not allowed a run in seven games.
Starting point is 00:11:05 Despite his best efforts today. Right. He tried. Tried to mess that up. He does get his sixth save as a Diamondback. And just to put that in a perspective for you, the Arizona Diamondbacks have a team, as a team, have 35 saves total. And the person with the most saves on the team is Scott McGovern.
Starting point is 00:11:23 It doesn't feel like he's been here enough to have six. Yeah, Seawald is going to have. nine before we know it like he's gonna have nine after this weekend me he might use him damn near every day right it's it's yeah i mean it's really nice to have them yeah because the thing is it's like a joke about it being despite his best efforts but like you know it also takes a special kind of picture to get into that situation and work your way out of it and i don't know how many people would be able to do that it really does yeah because once you start getting into that situation you panic you can't get the you can't get any out you can't do anything productive
Starting point is 00:11:57 Yeah, it goes back to what we've talked about with kind of the mindset of a closer, right, knowing that like there's no one to save you. Tori's not going to his bullpen. Right. You need to get out of this. But like pitching around Corey Seeger there seems smart in the moment, right? But then it seemed, it went from it seeming smart to him not really having good command today.
Starting point is 00:12:16 And then you had a Brentstrom mound visit. And Brentstrom, like he somehow magically seems to do, was able to get Seawald back on track and he was able to get out of that. But it was bases loaded. Again, that catch by Thomas at least saved one run, if not maybe multiple, depending, because that out would have been another out. Yeah, who knows how, I mean, the momentum shifts in that situation, too. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:12:40 It just becomes a, because, I mean, that's probably a triple. And, I mean, at the very least, it's a double. So that definitely changes how that ninth inning looks. But it was, it's an exciting win. The Diamondbacks, like I said, they complete the two games sweep over the Texas Rangers. Fairly unlikely. I know the two of us were just in here on Monday saying you're probably going to lose this series to the Rangers,
Starting point is 00:13:01 probably going to lose both games. They didn't. They somehow found a way to win. And this team, once again, like Jesse and I talked about after last night's victory, this team is feeling a bit more like that team we saw in April and May. And you made some great points about it really does. The actual performance falls somewhere in the middle
Starting point is 00:13:19 between how bad they were in July and how good they were in May. However, we still don't know how good this team could be. We still don't know what their potential, at least for this season. Yeah. And I mean, right? Like the Rangers are really good, but also the Rangers have not been playing good. Exactly. Right.
Starting point is 00:13:34 Like they've lost, what, seven straight or six straight? They got, yeah, they got swept. I don't know how many games with the brewer. I think they got swept in four. Was it four? Yeah. It's either five or six.
Starting point is 00:13:44 And like Dave, I kept bringing it up when I was talking about the, the gallon strikeouts. But like, they've struck out. There's only been six teams that have struck out more than them over the last six, or the last 30 days. They have not been playing the best baseball. They're about to lose the, they're about to lose the divisional lead to the Mariners. That's true.
Starting point is 00:14:03 Which is seemed kind of infatheavalable a month ago. So who, I mean, if you got to take these wins with a grand assault too, right, in the Padres. But again, all you can do is win is just beat your opponents. And that's what they're doing right now. And I'm not going to complain about it. Exactly. Tommy Fam did extend his hitting streak to 13 games and he continues. And he wants me some money.
Starting point is 00:14:24 an absolute beast for this baseball team. I also got into some trouble today with Tori Lovelo, as most of you may have seen, where apparently I have not been coming to enough baseball games. Here's how Tori started off his press conference before the game today. Where you've been? I've seen you in about in like three weeks. I had to do stuff for the show back at the office. That's what Jesse's here for.
Starting point is 00:14:52 You keep it really busy. this guy's up he's everywhere and you're just doing whatever you want it sounds like that's okay I don't know what the show works
Starting point is 00:15:02 fucking he saw right through me he heard that fucking bullshit that I was putting out there I had to do things at the office I got stuff to do at the office I'm so foolish shit anyway
Starting point is 00:15:16 tip of the cap to Tori for that one by the way speaking and that's just Tori's a good fucking guy not every manager is he's the best is noticing
Starting point is 00:15:23 let alone saying something about. As Jesse said, I'm not as invisible as I think I have in time. But I will tell you this much, one interesting race that's coming down to, coming to a head here at the end of the season is a National League MVP race. We had fun joking that Corbyn Carroll was going to be in this race. But I wanted to give you guys my draft king's pick of the week because I just, I don't know why. I think this is a fun one to bet on. They have right now, as far as a future bet is concerned, National League MVP race,
Starting point is 00:15:53 They have Ronald Acuna at minus 400, and they have any other player at plus 300. That's an option. Any other player plus 300. I'm taking the field. That's what I'm doing. I know that's, I know, trust me, I know. It's not a great bet. But at the same time, I will say that there is a slight chance that something, you know, goes haywire here.
Starting point is 00:16:14 Oh, yeah, but what does that mean? I'm not, I'm not, I'm not rooting for the Dodgers, nor am I rooting for an injury to Ronald Ocunia Jr. I'm just. It kind of sounds like you're rooting for at least one of those. I'm just rooting for the field is what I'm rooting for but that you can do that over at the draft Kings I'm putting my money on the I don't know the king oh man minus 400 I don't know there's better things to put your money on than that but you have waited all year and the time has

Starting point is 00:19:18 Let's take a look at this two-game series in some of the numbers in regards to the Diamondbacks sweeping the Texas Rangers. Ends up with 10 runs to 6. Hits extremely close, errors, push on both sides. Really, what it came down to in this series
Starting point is 00:19:33 was the Diamondbacks pitching. Yeah. Diamondbacks pitching did the job. Then Diamondbacks offense got the job done with runners in scoring position. And so, you know, right here tells the story of how this team ended up taking these two games from the Rangers. Yeah, I mean, this is kind of like you were saying earlier, this team feeling
Starting point is 00:19:48 like the old teams. Like this was, these were just wins. They were well, like everyone kind did their job. Obviously, you know, the bullpen was iffy today. But by and large, like everyone did what they needed to do. And in just about every facet of the game, the Arizona Diamondbacks were better than the Texas Rangers over these two games. And it's been a while since you, I mean, you could say that about the Padre series, but before these two series, it's been a while since you could say that even games that they were winning that they were truly like wholly the better team in that game yeah um but it has felt like that over the last couple of of games couple of series so podra the last game of the podre series they won really right as jess he was saying like we want to see
Starting point is 00:20:29 i got to see them blow somebody out right and they they went and did it um and i think that was kind of where a lot of fans were at like they really did the wins were were cool but they needed they needed to feel good. They needed to feel convincing. And I think these last few have felt, have felt like this is a team that can, like they were in the first half of season, be dangerous and surprise teams and win baseball games. To be fair, that starting pitching ERA is fairly deceptive considering that, yeah, that bullpen game just had two-thirds of an inning and, you know, Joe Matsby. But, I mean, the replaying the replay is really good too. So, yeah. And that's kind of the opposite, right where you had 10 i think over 10 innings innings innings in that second game you had 10.1
Starting point is 00:21:11 uh innings pitch by the by the bullpen essentially in that in that second game and they were able to do some tremendous work so that came last that was awesome yeah i know maria's a dodgers fan is she being condescending right now or i think she's like super nice but it feels bad it feels condescending it feels like hey little kids oh like congrats guys we love you maria you're the best so unthreatened by you that we also, we ruin you, we refere success. Good job, squirt. Yeah. I don't think it's like that at all, you guys.
Starting point is 00:21:43 No, I believe Maria's being genuine and she's being nice, but it still doesn't feel good. I think so, too. It just feels bad. If it was Moe, then it would be different. Yeah, if it was Moe would be. Fuck that guy. He's just doing it to be an asshole. I believe that Maria is a really nice person.
Starting point is 00:21:58 And that makes it almost worse. It makes it hard on us, Maria. We really does. We're not supposed to like Dodgers. We want to just fight with you, but speaking of that, speaking of that, I think we have, do we have the wild card standings available? Because this beautiful graphic looks even more beautiful. Now that the boys are back in town, baby.
Starting point is 00:22:19 The boys are back in town. Let's go. And Gabby's, or excuse me, Mr. Diamondback, Gabriele Moreno's bat flip. Mr. Diamondback, Gabriele Moreno. He just feels like a diamond back dog. It feels like there's going to be a statue outside of the renovated. to Chase Field in 20 years and it's going to say Mr. Diamondback and it's going to have
Starting point is 00:22:39 Gabriel Marino on it. I also want to point out this is not going to mean a lot to many people but I have since updated my shit talk to Jack Loder and I've told them that we are here after saying earlier that we are coming for the giant wild card spot. We are here. We have taken that wild card spot so that's nice but I mean this looks good. I just want to say
Starting point is 00:22:59 as a baseball guy I fucking told everybody the Phillies would not be denied. I told you all, the Phillies were a-coming, and the Cubs were a-coming, and look where they are. They're here. The Cubs need to win that division, though. But it's really good to say the Diamondbacks back in that middle pack of teams there. You know, like, it never felt, I mean, throughout this whole, even the bad win and stuff like that, or the bad loss, losing stretch. They were obviously never out of it.
Starting point is 00:23:26 Like, everyone was losing. They were still very much in it. But it does feel different. And obviously, you know, this can change tomorrow, right? This can change and it can be back out of it, but it does just feel nice for them to be in that section, for them to be in the wild card spot. It's nice to know that after all of the losing, they're winning games again and they're in the playoffs right now. It's just a really good place to be. It's fantastic.
Starting point is 00:23:51 And I think the biggest thing is they still have a lot of games against these teams that are also in the hunt or like the Chicago Cubs above them. So they really have a chance to solidify their position if they continue to play as well as. as they're playing right now. And I mean, things aren't going to get tougher. These other teams aren't playing as poorly as, you know, some of the teams that we have played. And there's Shane right there, of course. I want to take a moment and we didn't acknowledge Jacelle's SuperChap.
Starting point is 00:24:18 Oh, yeah, yeah. Even though she asked for a refund, which she rightfully should have. I mean, that's, I probably would have asked for one too. But we got you, Alec, freaking Thomas is the king snake, Jusel. So we thank you and we love you. And it's so great to see you in the chat tonight. piece of Yoshi with the $2 super chat. He says,
Starting point is 00:24:36 the pool has scared everyone off. Maria, sorry. Yeah. We appreciate you, Marie. Appreciate that you keep coming back. Yeah, you're the real MVP.
Starting point is 00:24:44 You're giving Dodgers fans and a slightly less shitty name than they had. Since Shane is here in the, in the chat, let's do we on do a little spying on our exes for Shane? Yeah, why not? Can we get the spying on our exes up there because it's time to spy on our exes?
Starting point is 00:25:00 And when we're going to spy on our exes, We're going to take, we don't, things, things got crazy tonight with Paul Seawald. But let's, let's give our boy Josh Rojas some love because Josh Rojas hit a very crucial home run for the Seattle Mariners tonight. I believe that's his second home run of the year and his second home run as a Seattle mariner. Who predicted that he would hit his second home run of the year. I don't want to do this.
Starting point is 00:25:26 For no damn good reason. I don't want to give him this credit. D.Gen that is Shane Diefenbach for no damn good reason. on Josh Rojas. He did. Rojas to hit all the road. That's my favorite Steve. The favorite thing about Steve is how he says Rojas.
Starting point is 00:25:40 Yeah. But, really? Shane is a psychopath and it worked. So props. I also love the way that Steve says contrerez every time. Oh, Jesse hates it. I mean, pronounce it right. Can I just say that I hate Jace Peterson, just on the subject of Josh Rojas?
Starting point is 00:25:57 I just want to throw that out there. Josh Rojas, it feels like, we traded Jace Peterson for Josh Rojas. Or we traded Josh Rojas for Jason. It feels like it's not at all what happened. Yeah. And it feels like it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:10 And it feels like we're losing the trade. Even though we're really not, like we're really not. Every time Josh does something, I'm the Wolverine meme looking at the picture of Josh Rojas and I just think about Jase Peters. We traded Canzone who at the time was not on the, or he was up at the time wasn't. He was up. And then Rojas, who had not been up for a while, but had been up for a couple of days and was terrible for a closer who has closed his last six or whatever. He hasn't given up a run in seven games. But Panzone, meanwhile, also had, like, a game-tying home run, I believe, for the Mariners.
Starting point is 00:26:39 So, I mean, it's working out. But the Jace makes it hard. Yeah, I get it. Someone said it earlier, Manuel Rivera sitting down in AAA. We're, since we're angry about stuff, how do the Padres have better playoff odds than the Diamondbacks? I mean, I don't know. I couldn't tell you that. Explain that to me.
Starting point is 00:26:55 They've been losing games all year. I really can't explain that. No. I get that the roster is the roster, but at a certain point, they like, they're, they're There are eight games out, man. I don't like this. Now people are sending Damon to take out Diamondbacks players.
Starting point is 00:27:06 David, you have a bad reputation now, man. I don't like this at all. At a certain point, one bit. We got, no, a hired hand is a hired hand.
Starting point is 00:27:17 Got rid of Carson Kelly, W, got rid of Madison, Bobgarner early. Haven Smith. Paving. Paving's still alive. We're just,
Starting point is 00:27:24 we're just going to move along. Thumb knob. It's the best I could do it with your name. It says strength of schedule. Yeah, that probably has something to do with it. But no,
Starting point is 00:27:31 no, fuck off. Because the Rangers are division leaders. No, no, no, no, they're talking about the Padres. Oh. Podres. Why the Padres have better playoff changes. I was about that. I got sorry.
Starting point is 00:27:41 No, no, no, straight. The schedule just as far as the Diamondbacks still, they have a very tough schedule ahead. And I'm sure the Padres also have a tough schedule ahead. But before we get on to Jesse Friedman joining us, let's take a look at the probable pitchers for this upcoming series with the Cincinnati Reds that is also going to be very crucial. They're all going to be crucial going forward. These are all going to be big series, every single one of them until the end of the season. But here we have Brandon Fott going for that elusive first victory, but he absolutely deserves.
Starting point is 00:28:12 I feel it. He absolutely deserves it. And then we have Merrill Kelly going in game two against Green. We have a matchup right now. Yeah, that's a hell of a matchup in game two. We have Zach Davies returning, according to Tori Lovolo today. And he will be starting in that third game in that series. so feel how you want to about that.
Starting point is 00:28:34 And then we have Sacconi here in the final game, but Jesse feels like this might end up being Zach Gallen considering. No, he told you missed the message. Oh, did. No, no longer. He told us that our thing was correct. Oh, he did confirm it. Yeah, because Zach Gowan with the day off tomorrow
Starting point is 00:28:51 could have technically pitched on Sunday just as far as everything lining up. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, pitching has not been great for Cincinnati as of late. Yeah, no, it has not. You see all those DRIs over four, right? So like, especially since the offense seems like it's been trucking again, like this is a series that you should win, especially when you consider out of the last time we saw this team went,
Starting point is 00:29:15 especially for Brennan Fott. Like, this is a series you should, I feel like you can, you should feel good about. Obviously, you know, that third day, that's a big question mark. That's a huge question. It's a very big question mark. Especially the way we don't know who they're having and be because. Zach Davies.
Starting point is 00:29:30 We see how he's been pitching in Reno, and it's not very encouraging as far early. I can't believe they keep letting Zach Davies get away with these like sold out games as the start. Yeah, that's crazy. That's Bobblehead Night, which is insane. The Corby and Carroll Bobblehead Night. Yeah. That's tough one. He seems to pitch a lot on the giveaway night.
Starting point is 00:29:45 I said earlier, Corbin's probably going to end up getting benched on Saturday. Why not? That's about the make all the sense of the world. He got benched on his birthday, so why would be benched on his bobblehead night? But Slate's a Coney there. That's interesting because that could still be another one of those bullpets. type games so I really feel like the Tori's kind of embracing that you know and and if that's the way that those starts are going to go yeah I feel like he feels comfortable with going with that route right
Starting point is 00:30:13 I mean I mean you get into the postseason you're trying to get to the postseason with a bunch of guys who don't have a whole lot of postseason experience I mean if you are able to win games without using those pitchers that's a good thing like they're going to be that much fresher once the postseason comes along and you've seen plenty of pitchers who get to the postseason and that's when they start fizzling out. So. Yep. Interesting. Interesting to see how this plays out for the Diamondbacks, but they need help at starting
Starting point is 00:30:38 pitching. And I think Zach Davies is... Maria just said some bad words in the chat. Yeah. Oh, no. Oh, no. Maria. Maria, you're going to set Damon off. Damon? Maria.
Starting point is 00:30:49 I'm going to give you one chance and... Damon only. Next time you say James Outman, you're banned. James Out is not even number two. This is the agenda that Damon is pushing. Yeah. Matt McLean said. that guy. I mean, Kodai Senga is probably up there above James Outman. James Outman wasn't even
Starting point is 00:31:05 in the top 10 as far as Rick as a guy too, but, but anyway, well, what we do have is we have a love for OG's brands. Jesse's here, but Jesse doesn't want to talk about OGs. You know what I mean, but you and I could take care of that because if you are stuck on what kind of gummies to enjoy from our friends at OG's brands, we're the guys to ask, right? Or just buy them all. Or just buy them all. Try them all. That's one thing you can. can do. The decision is 420 times easier, according to OG's brands, because now you have the mixed bags of fruits and creams, which you can try a variety of flavors, doses, strains, all of that in the mixed bags. They have fruits, they have creams, and you can try all of them.

Starting point is 00:32:50 It's the official craft beer of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Also, the official craft beer of Derek Montia, even though we don't have any kind of official deal in place. and there's still maybe some debate up. I'm going to start doing that more. I'm going to be like Nike is the official sneaker of Sean DePaz. Because I've decided that it is. It's the only thing I wear.
Starting point is 00:33:09 Right. I only wear Nike. I'm actually Adidas Ultra Boots. I am a Nike athlete. Yeah. But I don't know. Does that work that way? And I'm a four peaks drinker.
Starting point is 00:33:18 Yeah. Officially. I'm sponsored by Mac or Apple. I don't know. Not Mac. Definitely not Michaela. I don't want to associate with her because those people from Missouri will come from me. But if you want to check out the official crappier of the Arizona Diamondbacks,
Starting point is 00:33:32 check out our friends of Four Peaks. It's the worst for a movie of all time. Oh, man, it's terrifying. We are now joined by the wizard himself, the Thunderstake himself. Jesse Friedman. Jesse. It's Jesse. It's Jesse. What's up, buddy? Welcome in. Hey, how we doing? Fantastic. After watching Alec Thomas catch that
Starting point is 00:34:27 baseball we're riding on a high i don't know how i've never done like the new girl thing for jesse before yeah it works so well it's it works really good um what what's the mood like there i imagine there was a lot of loud music playing in the clubhouse there was some loud music uh yeah we uh we talked to alec thomas uh about the catch of course he was the first guy we talked to in the clubhouse uh and the thing that really stood out there we'll we'll definitely post this on twitter and and maybe on youtube as well uh but he said it was funny that was that was was like maybe the quote of the entire interview is Alec Thomas saying that he just thought it was funny that he was able to get to that ball with as far as he had to go. I believe he covered 98 feet,
Starting point is 00:35:09 something like that, which is pretty crazy. But yeah, you saw him chuckle. Like after he made the catch, his reaction was that he was actually chuckling and Paul Seawald on the mound was actually chuckling. And so yeah, I guess Alec Thomas just thinks it's hilarious that he's one of the better centerfielder's in baseball. And he made a really incredible catch. And yeah, obviously an incredible play. Paul Seawald, unfortunately, since coming over, has made some of these ninth innings a little bit more intense than he has wanted or maybe anyone has wanted, frankly.
Starting point is 00:35:47 But at the end of the day, all that really matters is that you convert the save opportunity. And since that first really rough day in Minnesota, Seewald has been perfect in that regard every game that he's coming to save. He is locked down and the Diamondbacks have come away with a win. So, yeah, he got a little help from his defense today and Alec Thomas, but still a big day for him. They just loaded one out, you know, getting the last two outs of the inning. It seems like, you know, he's put himself in some situations
Starting point is 00:36:13 where he was very close to potentially, you know, potentially things really going south, even in a game where the debacks had a three-run lead. But you look up at the end of the day and he preserved that three-run lead. He actually didn't give up any runs at all. So he continues to bend but not break in the ninth inning. And, you know, he got obviously some help from Alec Thomas in this one. Has not allowed a run in seven straight games now, Jesse. That's Paul Seawald.
Starting point is 00:36:39 And he gets his sixth save as a Diamondback with Scott McGuff currently holding the record with nine saves for this team. So it feels like Seawald might just pass Scott. It seems like hopefully that's the case. But overall, I think. thought that yeah I mean the the fact that Seawald is able to get himself into trouble and still find a way out is the one difference from the other guys in the pen that that we've seen kind of get the same opportunity it feels very much like he doesn't get rattled that same way by getting himself into a jam and and you know tonight kind of showed that it wasn't pretty but he still
Starting point is 00:37:22 manages to not only lock down the save but do it without even allowing a run. So it's fairly impressive compared to what we've seen throughout the season from the rest of the pen. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, I mean, you know, he's loading the bases in the same way that maybe some of the other Debex closers this year have loaded the bases, but he's not giving up the grand slam. You know, he's not giving up the three-run homer. He's not giving up, you know, that killer hit that actually winds up bearing you in the game. And we talked to him as well, uh, after. You know, he's not giving up. after the game. And it's no secret. He's not particularly happy with how interesting these ninth innings have been since he came over to Arizona. He talked about how it is not at all his goal to
Starting point is 00:38:03 load the bases every single time he pitches in the ninth inning. But yeah, yeah, shocking. But yeah, you know, again, all that really matters for a closer is that you're able to shut the door and you're able to preserve the win for your team. And in that regard, Paul Seawald has continued to be excellent, even if, you know, there's a lot more traffic on the bases than anyone would like. Earlier today, we talked to Tori about another arm in the bullpen, and that was Dre Jameson. And I was kind of surprised by his answer there, Jesse, that Dre is out to throwing, what, 90 feet, he said,
Starting point is 00:38:40 and then has a chance to maybe return to the team this season? Yeah, he didn't rule it out. Tori said the next steps for for Dre would be to get out to 120 feet, you know, and then they could, they could look at, you know, having him actually face hitters and do all that stuff. So he's still a ways away. I don't know if I would be super optimistic, to be honest. There's only, you know, a month and a half, a little less than that at this point remaining in the season. So, yeah, I think it would, I think it's a little far-fetched that we see Dre Jameson this year.
Starting point is 00:39:15 But one thing that Tori did also say that I think is encouraging is he was asked, you know, do you have more confidence now that Dre can avoid Tommy John surgery than you did at the beginning of this process? And to that his answer was yes. And that's obviously big news. You know, even if, even if Dre is not able to find his way back to the majors this season, you know, there's still, at least as of right now, it still seems like he'll be fine and be able to head into next year and, you know, hopefully have a normal 20.
Starting point is 00:39:45 24 season. So that's obviously a big development here as well. Another injured pitcher that is going to be returning here very soon was Zach Davies. And we have our concerns, especially considering his numbers in Reno. But what are your thoughts on what Zach Davies can give this team at a major league level? And do you think he'll still have a normal outing or do you think that he might be on a fairly short leash like we've seen Slade Sacconi for him? instance beyond. I don't know. That's a good question. I mean, he's built up to, I think, like, mid-80s as far as his pitch count goes in AAA. So from a workload perspective, there's no reason to necessarily hold him back. But that was also, I guess, the case for Slate Cicconi,
Starting point is 00:40:32 where the devax have just kind of decided, like, we don't really want Slate Cicconi to face opposing lineups three times through. We're going to let him face twice, you know, and maybe we're even going to do a bullpen game kind of a thing where we're open with somebody else, maybe a lefty if the opposing team has some good left-hand hitters at the top of their lineup. We'll use an opener and then we'll have Slade B, kind of the bulk guy to follow that. As far as we know, that's not really the plan with Zach Davies. I think the debacks just view him as being a normal member of the rotation. That's not to say that the leash couldn't be shorter.
Starting point is 00:41:06 You know, if he goes out there and struggles for two or three innings, the debacks do have some options, especially with the day off tomorrow, you know, Bryce Jarvis figures to potentially be available in a situation like that where he could provide some length. So, yeah, I think it's possible that you're not necessarily looking at Zach Davies pitching four or five innings. But yeah, if, you know, for people who have questions, I'm not necessarily, I'm kind of right there with you, frankly. I mean, Zach Davies has faced 65 hitters in Triple Ace and starting his rehab assignment. He's only struck out six of them.
Starting point is 00:41:42 That's a strikeout rate less than 10%. That's around a third of the major league average. There's just not a lot of swing and miss here for Zach Davies. And that's a concern. His change up just is not getting the whiffs that we've seen it get in years past. And that's really the pitch that's always made Zach Davies a major league caliber pitcher. He's a guy who doesn't really have a lot of compelling weapons, but he has this really, really good change up that's good enough to make him a number
Starting point is 00:42:07 four-starter almost in and of itself and he hasn't really had that pitch to the same degree as we've seen in past years so we'll see what it looks like the other thing that i should mention is the debacks in a sense don't have a choice here you can only have a guy on a rehab assignment for 20 days he's running into that deadline so the debacks basically had to either bring him back up um or just move on from him frankly or you know try to explore some some other options so they didn't have an option to just let him continue his rehab assignment in reno he was he was out of time if davies continues to struggle do you do you think that this could be another quick hard decision that the diamondbacks make where they do maybe part ways with him if if if he continues to have the same
Starting point is 00:42:52 problems that he had uh and and honestly put even puts up the same numbers he's putting up in reno i would i would think so um i mean it it's tough though the i mean right now what options The debacks have, yeah, they have Zach Allen, Merrill Kelly, Brandon fought in like two bullpen days is sort of what they've been doing. So in a sense, you feel like you kind of have to plug in, you know, a starter into that rotation just to kind of bring a little bit more stability. But yeah, we'll see. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the debacks had a short leash, not only in the game, but if things don't go well after the game, I think they're aware enough to know that they're in the middle. of a pennant race here and if Zach Davies is going to continue to pitch to a seven or eight ERA in the majors, you just can't have that in your rotation at this point. I think they're well aware of that.
Starting point is 00:43:45 Jesse, Maria G. in the chat are one of our favorite Dodgers fans wants to know. You guys play us in a four game series next week. If we win game one, am I not welcomed here? And we'll let you decide that one. We're going to let you handle this one. Is Maria welcomed if the Diamondbacks lose to the Dodgers in game one? I mean, I would say so, right? Right? She's been very nice. She's been very kind. We're not going to let that bastard Moe in here,
Starting point is 00:44:09 but Maria for sure is okay. No, Mo's going to be here. Yeah, I know. Well, Mo's, yeah, Moes probably. He already hasn't set in his calendar, I'm sure. No matter what. But we were talking before you got on about the probabilities for this series. And Damon, if we could put those back up,
Starting point is 00:44:26 we still, you know, it's not awful. It's not, you know, something that the Diamondbacks really have a bad pitching match. matchup here, but it is very interesting, especially considering the Slate's Coney start there at the end, Zach Davies. And obviously, Brandon fought going for still his first win in the first game of the series. Yeah, I'm a little surprised here, to be honest. I kind of thought the Diamondbacks were going to start Zach Allen in this series. I think you guys touched on this already.
Starting point is 00:45:00 With the off day tomorrow, they could have pitched Zach on on normal rest. on Sunday. And this is obviously a very pivotal series. Cincinnati Reds, Diamondbacks are now ahead of them in the standings, but it's by half a game, right? It's really close. This series, it's a four-game set between two teams that are neck and neck in the postseason race. These are about as important to games as you're going to have the rest of the way. And you'd think that you would want your best starting pitcher pitching in the series if you had that option. Now, granted, the debacks are playing the Dodgers on the road after this.
Starting point is 00:45:35 So, you know, you kind of want Zach Gallen in that series too. You want Zach Gallen in all the series. Unfortunately, that's not realistic. But I am a little surprised that they didn't, you know, maybe use Slate Cicconi as, you know, maybe an extra bullpen arm for the time being. And use Zach Gallen on Sunday. But that is not the decision that's being made.
Starting point is 00:45:55 Tori Lavello just told us after this game that Cicconi will start on Sunday. Well, all around the topic is starting pitching, I have to ask because we saw a report earlier that the Diamondbacks might potentially be interested in one Yoshinobu Yamamoto. All right? Yeah, Yoshinobu Monomoto. That's fun.
Starting point is 00:46:15 Very fun. But apparently it's going to cost a lot of money and the competitor, other named competitor in that tweet, Zanieric Mets. Yeah, that's not great. Notably have a very rich owner who likes to spend money. That's not great at all. So, Jesse, I guess, reactions to that?
Starting point is 00:46:31 Do you have any of the Diamondbacks to actually stand any chance of making a signing, whether it is actually this guy or any other guy like this. Like, is that something that's actually in the Diamondbacks bag? Can I first say how weird it is to ever see the Diamondbacks like in? Yeah. Like as one of two teams that are in for like a player like this, like this, this just seems really pretty good.
Starting point is 00:46:52 He pitched for a pitching, pitchers triple crown in Japan. And the ERA he had, the second best ERA was his teammate who it was like a point 1.22, behind him in ERA. Pretty good in Japan. So, yeah, Jesse, thoughts? Yeah, I mean, the man has a career 1.89 ERA.
Starting point is 00:47:13 That's dumb. That'll play. That'll play. That'll be families, Jesse. But, yeah, I mean, like you guys were just saying, you know, any time there's a report where, you know, the Diamondbacks are interested in such and such a player, it's like, okay, you know, Diamondbacks are interested,
Starting point is 00:47:32 Interesting. Anytime you see a report where the Mets and the Diamondbacks are interested in a particular player, yeah, maybe you don't feel so great about your chances of signing said player, especially as Michael Marino, the source on this tweet here, as he points out, you know, you're looking at probably a contract exceeding $200 million. There's also going to be a posting fee with Yamamoto as well. So, yeah, realistically, do I see the Diamondbacks point? this off. I guess I have to be the party pooper and say I'm not sure I necessarily see that happening.
Starting point is 00:48:09 The devs financially are just in it honestly kind of a precarious position going into the offseason. They've lost a decent amount of revenue because of their TV deal. We still don't have an update on their stadium situation. If they are renovating Chase Field, which I think is the most likely outcome, that's going to be a significant investment of money over a long period of time. They're in a situation right now where financially they're worse off than we're used to them being rather than being better. So I don't know if I see a $200 million investment being in the cards this off season, especially if a team like the New York Mets are also are also interested. I don't mean to do a blind side attack on Sean next to me, but it's like saying Sean has a strong interest in a 2003 Ford Big Ben Bronco as you be.
Starting point is 00:49:00 I can have as much interest as I want. We know that. He talks about it all the time, but does he mean he's actually close to buying one? I don't know about that. I don't know how accurate that is. That's very. Now I feel like I, like that wasn't a necessary attack. I mean, none of y'all are any closer to getting enough 20, 23, 4, Big Ben Broncos.
Starting point is 00:49:19 I mean, it's an accurate matter for. Okay. But Jesse might get that new RAV sick RAV for sooner than we expect. I don't know what he's got. He's got a lot of side deals going on and stuff. But Jesse, day off tomorrow. for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Were you surprised to not see
Starting point is 00:49:34 like the rotation shuffled around so that Zach Gowan could possibly start there in that finale against the Reds versus Slade? Yeah, yeah, I was. Yeah, like I was saying, this is a really important series for the Diamondbacks in the grand scheme of this season.
Starting point is 00:49:51 Maybe not quite as important as it could be given that the Reds already swept the Diamondbacks. And frankly, the only way that the Diamondbacks would win a tiebreaker against Cincinnati is if they sweep this four-game series, which is obviously a lot to ask. So from that standpoint, you know, the odds are certainly stacked against you in terms of flipping that tiebreaker in your favor.
Starting point is 00:50:14 So I guess from that standpoint, it's, you know, maybe not quite as pivotal. But yeah, I mean, this is still a team that you're right in the thick of this race with. So, yeah, we'll see. I mean, Slate Sikone has pitched well. So I want to make that clear as well. This, you know, it's not like you're putting some guy out there who has an ERA of seven or anything like that in his first few major league appearances.
