That pumping of the arms today, welcome in to another edition of the PHS podcast.
Right here, I'm PHNX.
My name is Derek Montia, officially known as your mayor of the city of Phoenix.
This man next to me is my vice mayor near Thunderstake, Jesse Friedman.
We sent Mr. Electric to Las Vegas so that Sean DePaz could power that city for a little while
with the heat waves going on right now all across this country.
They need all the power they can get from him.
But the Diamondbacks could have used a little bit more power in this series.
It's still a series win over the Atlanta Braves, which, let's be honest, you hypocrites,
we should all be surprised and shocked and happy about because after what happened in Toronto,
we definitely didn't think that this was going to go the way it did.
The Diamondbacks absolutely had a chance to win today's game in a pitcher's duel between Zach Gallen and Spencer's strategy.
and what a pitcher's duel it turned out to be.
We were worried about Zach Gallen being on the road.
We were worried about it being 920 in the morning local time.
And Gallen was absolutely outstanding.
You could even say he was perfect until the sixth inning.
Yeah, you could.
Which we weren't.
We did not say that.
I swear to God we both screamed at each other,
not even to bring up any topics about that until Max Gallivance in
and starts questioning if saying stuff about things like that even matter.
and then of course he gives up a solo home run right as the words are coming out of Max's mouth.
But he was very good today.
Yeah, there was a hot moment in this game where it was like, are we going to see like Spencer Strider throw?
Strikeout 20 strikeouts and Zach Gallen throw a no hitter.
Like is that what's going to happen?
And yeah, Gallen did have a perfect game going into the sixth inning.
He did hit a little bit of a wall.
It seemed like the command kind of fell off for him in the sixth and seventh.
He also frankly gave up quite a bit of hard contact early in this game.
were some line shots that were right at some debacks defenders.
So I don't honestly even think that this was like that great of a performance by Gallin
through the first five innings.
But I mean, that's just a testament.
Yeah, that's just a testament to how good he can be when he's at his best.
And we've seen this before where even when Gallin doesn't have his best stuff,
he can go out there and throw five perfect innings.
And you don't really bat in eye at this point.
Strider was insane through the front five innings.
It was wild to watch.
I mean, we, it was crazy.
We saw that moment what could tell Marte hit that triple.
It was a lead-off triple.
We were sure that we were going to see the Diamondbacks score their first run of the game.
Instead, Spencer Strider just strikes out the heart of the order and the next three guys up.
And, of course, yeah, that's the way today went for the Diamondbacks.
Like Jesse said, there was one point where we were throwing around if Spencer Strider was potentially going to cross the 15 strikeout mark or even maybe the 20 strikeout mark.
I mean, he had 12 strikeouts through five innings, and his pitch count wasn't even that high at that point.
game and it's i mean it's crazy watching spencer strider pitch continues to just absolutely amaze me it's
it's two pitches basically he's pretty much only throwing four seamers and sliders there's an occasional
change up in there's wild but he just has this insane ability to execute pitch after pitch four
seamers up sliders down getting swing and miss after swing and miss he had 26 whiffs in this game
98 99 wherever he wanted it to be in the zone like it was incredible but he also hit a wall in this
game. The Diamondbacks got to him because, of course, as everyone, as everyone expected,
the two guys to break Spencer Strider shut out and get him out of the game or Dominic Canzone
and Emmanuel Rivera.
He's Daniel Rivera. Get it right. But yes, absolutely. Dominic Canzone with his first big league
home run and it couldn't have come at a better time when the Arizona Diamondbacks actually
absolutely needed it. It was 100 and 100.6 miles an hour off the bat, went 371 feet. Then Emmanuel
Rivera gives a back-to-back
Dinger situation. Like, after, I couldn't
imagine you telling me the Diamondbacks were going to hit
back-to-back home runs off of Strider based on
the way he was pitching in the fifth inning
just two innings later.
But yeah, that's what happened. And Emmanuel
Rivera's solo home run ended Strider's
day. He ends up striking out
13 in six innings pitched,
giving up four hits and four earned runs.
So the Diamondbacks really made him
look a little worse. Corby and Carroll was
on base, I believe when that happened. He got
the team's 100th stole.
and base of the season in the seventh, not in the game.
That would be some sort of record if it happened in the game.
That would be some sort of record.
It feels like they steal 100 bases a game, but it was this 100 stolen base,
and I believe they are third in Major League Baseball in stolen bases now.
But yeah, man, I mean, Gowan was just absolutely perfect until that sixth inning when he gives
up the solo home run to Orlando, Garcia.
And then, like Jesse said, he struggled again in the seventh.
He just gave up really hard contact in that inning.
everything looked like it was going to be a home run
even the balls that didn't go for a home run.
There were, yeah, three straight fly balls that were pretty much right at the fence.
One of them went over the fence and fortunately the other two did not.
Gives up a triple to Austin Riley and that home run to Matt Olson.
Gallin's line, he ends up seven innings, three earned, zero walks, five K's.
I think we'll all take that from Zach Gallen, especially on the road when we know he struggled the way he has.
Yeah, this is a very good Braves team that we have seen absolutely pummel the ball in the series.
we're going to get to the numbers here at a minute that proved that fact.
But the Braves got to the Diamondbacks bullpen.
And unfortunately, it was with two outs left in the eighth.
And of course, it was once again, Matt Olson and Austin Riley that did it to this team.
And they've been doing it to this team all series long.
There's some history here, too.
I mean, right, it was Miguel Castro, gave up the big three-run homer to Austin Riley.
That was Austin Riley's fourth home run in this series, which is bonkers.
He had two on Tuesday.
He had one yesterday.
He had one today.
He also had a double in that game on Tuesday.
Day, just an insane display of offense from Austin Riley in the series.
But yeah, Miguel Castro was the one who gave up that big blow.
And it was tough.
I mean, he got ahead.
Oh, and two, he threw an uncompetitive pitch out of the zone.
And then he just hangs a slider right over the middle.
And, you know, in a one-two count, I think Austin Riley knew that a slider is what was coming.
And he got it.
And it was not well-placed.
It was right over the heart of the plate.
And he did what Austin Riley's been doing to those kinds of pitches in this.
series which just smack them, you know, 20 rows over the left field fence. And yeah, as I was talking
about earlier, there's a little bit of history here. The Diamondbacks had an opportunity to take
two out of three from the Atlanta Braves back in early June here in Arizona. And the Diamondbacks
gave up four runs in the ninth inning and ultimately lost that game eight to five. And it was Miguel
Castro who gave up the grand slam to Eddie Rosario. Yes, it was. Yes, it was. In that game. So, yeah,
Yeah, Castro against the Braves has not been a winning combination for the Diamondbacks this season.
And on the year, I mean, taking this series, the debacks are three and three against the Braves this year.
That's pretty darn good against the team as good as Atlanta.
But the devax also have had really good chances to win two out of those, two out of those games that they lost.
They very well could be five and one against the Braves if, you know, the bullpen hadn't melted down quite like it did in those games.
You're absolutely right. You're absolutely right. And it's, I think that's the most frustrating part, especially when, I don't know. Miguel Castro, like you said, does have that history of doing this against Atlanta. I sometimes think that there's things going on with Tori managing games that really just involve him trying to increase guys confidence and maybe trying to the old, you know, adage of getting back on the horse or whatever, like trying to battle your demons and overcome them. Okay, so you blew it. So let's put you back out there. And then you just blew it again. So what does that?
do with your confidence when you just go out there and absolutely blow it again in the same
situation against the same team. I don't know. There's a lot to be said there about this bullpen
because this bullpen right now continues to, you know, be one thing one day and another thing
the next day, right? Like, I mean, they're just so inconsistent. You don't even know what you're
going to get sometimes out of the same guys. I don't want to, by any stretch of the imagination,
attack Kevin Ginkle, but we saw him be absolutely dominant in the first game when he
came in and closed out the game one in the series for the Diamondbacks and then just struggle
yesterday in the same kind of role. So it feels like it's a frustrating thing for Tori LaBolo.
You start to think you can count on a guy. You start to think maybe this guy's emerging as one
of my high leverage situation guys. And then that guy just immediately buckles in that situation.
We talked a lot about what caused Kevin Ginkle to buckle yesterday and how that might, I don't know.
I don't know. There were some people that love the fact that Ginkle went over and walked.
Yeah, that was that was polarizing. Some people on Twitter were talking about how they,
they love just kind of the fire that it would take in a guy to just like walk, walk over to someone
causing that much trouble over there at third base and just kind of stare him down as Kevin Gingle did
with Ronald Acuna yesterday. And had the Braves manager come out and like talk to the umpire about it.
Like as if Ginkl did something wrong. Like Gingles, I mean, what are you doing? You're halfway
to home. It's an active play. We can get you right now, right? And he could absolutely go over
and just tap him with the ball if Acuna didn't move fast enough. I mean, that's what I would have
liked to see. You talk about what would have made me happy. Is Ginkled doing that slow walk over there
and then sprinting to go get Acuna? Maybe he doesn't get him, but that's the kind of fire.
Lying out? Like diving like Superman? Yeah. I'm surprised.
Trying to get him. Jacob's sad about that. But the Diamondbacks won the series. That's the biggest thing
to remember here. A lot of things
for them to still work on. And of course, we have some more
trade candidates to talk about trade targets
for the Arizona Diamondbacks, but
we got to give some flowers out.
We're going to accentuate the positives
here. Corbyn Carroll hit his 19th home run
of the season. This man is easily
on pace for a potentially
30-40 season, which
even with how good we thought he could be,
I don't know if we really thought
he could be that year. 30 homers, 40
stolen base. That's a pretty sick rookie season.
And 40 stolen bases might be kind of
I mean, that was his 29.
We're being conservative.
Yeah, it was his 29th stolen base in the game is 19th home run.
So he's on pace to exceed 3040 slightly at this point.
Alex in the comment said, if I could diagnose our bullpen with a medical condition,
it would be a severe bipolar disorder.
Well said.
Yeah, I mean, I feel like in a sense we've kind of already known this about the Diamondbacks bullpen.
Like, just think through all the guys who have pitched in high leverage situations this year, right?
Miguel Castro.
a guy that debacks have relied on a lot in some big moments this year.
The eye had like kind of a career 4 ERA coming in, right?
Like he hasn't really been that guy for teams that he's pitched with before coming over here.
Scott McGuff is as great as he's been at times for the Diamondbacks.
He came over from Japan and you didn't really know exactly what you were going to get there coming
into the season.
Andrew Chafin, a guy who's had a lot of success in the majors,
but never really like a true elite back-end arm.
I don't think.
And we're just kind of seeing the results of that at this point.
Sorry to cut you off.
Andrew Chafin, we did want to send out our congratulations to him.
He was placed on the paternity leave list.
So he's going to be a daddy.
That child is going to be a major trouble.
He's not wrong.
He's not wrong.
Or it's going to be just the most angelic child you've ever seen in your life because they're just going to be so the opposite of their father.
I wouldn't count on that.
Yeah, I wouldn't count on that either.
I mean, if I was Chafin's son,
I would absolutely just be a troublemaker and be involved in all the hijinks.
But Diamondbacks don't have a lot of options in this scenario.
And, you know, Lavello is doing what he can with what he has.
I just don't know if you do want to criticize Lbello.
Again, I don't know if this entire closer by committee thing is, you know, even a good idea anymore at this point.
I don't have a problem with it.
I don't know who the closer would be.
Yeah.
There's no, there's nobody that's emerged on that.
If there's anything we've learned, it's that there is no one guy on this team.
It's like, oh, that's the guy you want in that big spot.
It was kind of all cycle through.
For a little while.
For a while.
It was Andrew Chafin for a while.
It was Miguel Castro for a while.
But at the end of the day, the debacks from the beginning of the season have been trying to get
more out of these guys than was probably realistic to expect from them.
And that's why this next 10 days or so is big for this team, because they very much
could use some help at the.
back end of the bullpen. Mo says irritable bullpen disorder and that that yeah yeah that might be
IBD. Coggs wants to congratulate Jafin on the sex so congratulations to shape it on the sex I guess
but we do have to give out our king stank and of course there is one man that absolutely deserves it
not just for his smile but for his career achievements in this series and that is one and only
dominant can zone I mean we should have like world class smile on this list as well
But he did get his first career hit as well as his first career home run today.
And God bless this kid.
I mean, you know, it's not been an easy go at the plate, but I feel like, you know, that's,
he's having the more realistic, like, call up.
Like some of these players of the Diamondbacks have called up just get so hot so fast that it's not even,
it doesn't even feel real.
But he struggled a bit like you expect to see minor leaguers at time.
He just, you know, he just needs some reps.
He needs some time up there.
but man, that was great to see him get that first career home run.
I think Connor in the chat said that you could hear him screaming
as he rounded the base path the whole time and that's just, that's just magic.
Yeah, his emotion on the field has been like, I mean, that's been like the best part of it.
The smile after his first career hit a couple days ago, which also came in a huge spot, right?
That was the game tying two-out RBI single and the eighth inning in that insane 16-13 game on Tuesday.
And then today, I mean, if the Diamondbacks had won this game,
that would have been the thing that, I mean, that would have been the big thing.
That would have been the reason that they won the game.
A big three run home run was Spencer Strider pitching the way that he was.
And it was a high fastball.
I mean, I guess it was high and inside.
Maybe it wasn't a perfect location, but it wasn't a terrible pitch.
I mean, Spencer Strider has insane level stuff.
And Dominic Canzon just, you know, yanked this pitch down the right field line over the fence.
It was his hits have been a few and far between, but they have been extraordinary.
narrowly timely early in his career.
We have a lot to discuss when it comes to this home run because first, we won't go into detail,
but one of us doubted Dominic Canzone in this spot very much.
Somebody here in this show doubted Dominant Canzone.
And then set things out loud.
I'll just say it because it was honestly one of the most hilarious moments that happened in our office.
Dominic Canzone comes up, too on nobody out.
And I'll be honest here, which I think is somewhat defensible.
A lot of you get it too, you hypocrites.
Canzone has, you know, outside of that single, hasn't looked great at the play early in his career.
And I was like, man, I don't know if I love Dominic Canzone in this spot too on.
Nobody out.
I don't even think the words were out of his mouth yet before he was hitting a home run.
No sooner had I said that had Dominic Canzone hit a go-ahead three-run home run that gave the diamond back.
Which just sent all of us into a spiral.
There was a lot of running and screaming and yelling.
I believe Damon turned around and started saying fuck you to Jess.
I believe that is the words that were said.
There were a lot of fingers pointing at Jesse, but they were more like this.
And then PD came up with the idea that because of that moment,
we need to just install a camera in the office that, you know, I don't know.
Those kinds of moments happen.
I don't know if it's like, it happened later.
I was writing the stupid headline for this show as a win.
And Espo comes over and he's like, what the hell are you doing?
Why are you writing a win?
And he starts talking about how I would have been kicked out of the press box at what,
a Wranglers game or something. I don't know. He's old. He's been around in sports.
Sidewinder. I think it was sidewriters. Come on. Come on. Espo. Anyway, he says I would have been kicked out
the press box for writing a headline like that beforehand. And with that, with that,
Miguel Castro gives up about 30 seconds. Austin Riley hit a three-run home run. I don't want to believe
the stuff that we do in this office actually impacts baseball games, but I'm starting to not be able to
believe that. But first, I want to give, before we go on, I want to give a shout out to some of our
super chats that we got. We've freaking love.
you guys. Nicholas Gruders says
this team is 20 games over
500 with a good bullpen. He's
absolutely right. He is absolutely right about
that. With a good bullpen, yeah
that might be realistic.
Like with a really good bullpen.
We haven't seen that many blowout losses,
really when it comes down to it. We've probably
seen, in my opinion. We've seen a few
plot losses. No, I'm not saying we haven't
seen any. I'm just saying
like, I feel like, and maybe
again, this might be just, you know, the way
that these losses stick with you. I
feel like the close losses that a good bullpen might have locked down outnumber the blowout losses
this season, right?
So yeah, they have lost a lot of games like they lost today.
Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah, you had to lead late and you just weren't able to hold it.
So many series where it felt like they felt like they could have completed the sweep and they
just lose that one game.
The Diamondbacks are still going to be happy about it, right?
Like we still go on to say, okay, at least they won the series.
But, man, how many games could they really have polished off the opponent?
and just put their foot down aggressively and completed that three-game sweep.
The Diamondbacks are 3-8 this year when going for a sweep.
They have really, really struggled.
Which, I mean, like, that's a pretty good problem to have.
Like, if you're going to have a problem, like, man, this team just sucks when it's going for a sweep, right?
Like, that's a pretty fun conversation to be having relative to the past couple of years.
But, yeah, the debacks have had some trouble finishing the job.
It feels like the run differentials.
in those games have been really, really close as well.
Like they've been like, we blew it pretty much in a lot of them.
Yeah, like by one or two runs or something like that.
Nicholas also said did like to see Carol hit a homer with two-hand swing look good.
I know he has been very big on Corby and Carroll.
We even saw a moment where he swung with a one-handed swing.
We saw him make a face.
And me and this guy, we didn't like that.
We didn't like that face one bit.
Tyrannical Goat 12.
Also sent a super chat.
Thank you.
We love you too.
He said, good series, dub.
would have loved the suite but also love the answerbacks graphic the broadcast had
ballet all had all year to do that and MLB did it in less than a week oh love the new broadcast
on the Cincinnati love that attitude and I love the new broadcast I just want to put that out
there Saul hit the nail on the head when it came to the people at valley sports Arizona and
placing blame here when it comes to Diamond Sports Group and you know ballet and all that I just
want to reaffirm what he said and say how much we also really love the people of
Valley Sports, Arizona. We work with them all the time. We've become friends with a lot of them.
There are some tremendous people over there. We have talked about how we hope that MLB picks them up
because I don't know if they have like freelance people ready to go or what, but there are some
quality people that absolutely should be picked up by MLB and help produce these broadcast.
With that being said, I've loved the broadcast. Jesse and I, I was telling Jesse at my TV,
my TV at home, I can really see a difference in the camera. It really feels like they have like a
higher definition camera than we've been watching all year.
I like the scorebug, not being on the bottom, like so many of you.
The scorebug is a big way.
The scorebug is a huge way.
But yeah, I think I've even really liked, I mean, honestly,
Gonzo and Steve have been really good together.
And so far, these first couple of games in Atlanta have been really enjoyable to watch.
They've made them free available if you've been curious on MLB.com or MLBTV.com.
So I don't know.
I think that's just going to persist through Sunday.
Yeah, through this weekend, you can watch all these games for free.
Right.
And then after that, you'll be able to still watch them.
If you're on direct TV, you'll still be able to get them on direct TV on Cox.
They're on some weird channel, Your 7.
Yeah, it said like your HD, like Y.R. HD or something.
It's pretty bizarre.
But yeah, I just wanted to say in regards to that, because I know so many people have brought it up, the MLB.
It's just, it's been faster.
There's just everything has been better about it so far.
And the only thing that sucks in this entire situation is the collateral damage of the people that are impacted by this decision and by Diamond Sports Groups and ability to kind of live up to this situation that they've kind of connected themselves to contractually.
I still have to point that out because, you know, sometimes in life you make these decisions and you got to try to live them out.
It's sad now to see Ballet Sports Arizona now just as the home of just the coyotes because they also.
no longer have Suns or Mercury games over there.
So of the big four, just coyotes over there.
But you guys can keep it locked right here.

Max.
No, I'm sorry.
You're a child.
I am a child sometimes.
But let's take a look at the numbers for this series
because we know Mack wants to drive the bullpen away.
And, of course, she might be right this time.
A lot of runs scored, a lot of hits, a lot of errors for the Braves,
which led to them losing this.
the series you can't you can't help but feel like that yeah also whole lot of dingers hit a whole lot
yeah 15 home runs in a three game series that's that's pretty crazy uh the dbacks allowed nine home
runs in a three game set and somehow it took two out of three games which feels like that's that's
pretty crazy in and of itself uh the debacks bounced back with runners in scoring position they hit
400 in those situations in the series uh the braves were seven for 11 with runners in scoring position
if you just count Tuesday's game and today's game.
They were ridiculous.
But they were 0 for 5 yesterday and the D-Baks were able to win.
I don't believe what we said earlier that a pitcher's duel took place at any point in this series
with the starting pitching ERA being 7.13 for one team and 8.16 for another team.
Yeah, I mean, the D-Backs got seven innings two runs from Ryan Nelson yesterday
and seven innings three runs from Zach Gallen today.
But their starting pitching ERA for the series was over seven because Zach Davies didn't have such a great
night on Tuesday.
So Ryan,
Ryan would like to point out that the home runs were six to nine,
and that's a very nice ratio.
Batting average runners in scoring position,
there was no problem with scoring runs in this one.
As a matter of fact,
it was just stopping the team from scoring runs.
But the Diamondbacks still take two out of three here,
and I think that's the big thing to take away,
especially considering that the two games that they won
were the two games that we thought they would absolutely lose.
And we weren't super confident about,
Zach Gallen being on the mound, obviously, in an early game on the road.
But man, Ryan Nelson was outstanding and Zach Davies was there.
He pitched.
He threw the ball.
I'm not going to say anything more than that about him,
but the Diamondback still somehow won that absolute monster of a game that was like,
it was the talk of the internet.
It felt like for a little bit there.
And I couldn't stop getting notifications on my phone about it.
This Braves lineup is ridiculous.
It is absolutely.
Like, Sean Murphy didn't even play today.
And it still feels, it's like they don't have, they literally don't have a single hitter
who is a below average hitter in this lineup.
Like, how does Austin Riley have a below 800 OPS?
Because it feels like he did nothing.
Yeah, he got off to a pretty rough start this season, but he's been insane over the last
couple weeks.
It wasn't just like this one series.
He's been on kind of a tear the last few weeks overall.
But yeah, I go back to kind of what I was talking about yesterday where I just think this
Braves team is is just ridiculously talented.
They haven't even had Max Freed for most of the season.
He finished top five in Sigh-Hung voting last year.
This lineup, one through nine, has just an absurd amount of depth to it.
And yeah, I mean, in the National League right now, Derek, it's kind of like the Atlanta Braves
and then everyone else.
Yeah.
There was a little while where it was like, all right, D-Back's second best record in the National
League.
They were kind of up there, maybe in the conversation a little bit.
but the Braves have far separated themselves from all the other teams in the National League.
And that's even after losing four in a row.
They had lost four games in a row coming into this one.
And their record is still just far in a way the best.
Not only in the National League, there's still the best team in baseball by a pretty wide margin at this point.
Let me ask you this with the Diamondbacks having a 500 record against them and with what we talked about earlier that basically they could have won two of those games that we lost.
Is that encouraging to you about this Diamondbacks team and their ability to maybe,
do something if they could
make it into the playoffs one way or another?
You feel like if, yeah, I mean a Diamondbacks
Braves playoff series, like it seems like
it would be kind of fun to watch.
I mean, I think it'd probably
be advantage Braves on paper, but
the debacks have absolutely shown that they can hang
with this team. You're absolutely right.
I still think the debacks
need to make some trade deadline
additions to really feel
good about them in that series,
but they've absolutely held their own
and that's something we can't say about
the debacks with some of the other good teams around the league. They have struggled recently
against the better teams in baseball and that's why this series was so huge, right? Yeah, yeah.
You come in, you take two out of three from the best team in baseball on the road. This is still
an enormous win for the debacks in this series, even though they lost today. Diamondbacks still
have a one and a half game lead in the West wild card standings. They are tied currently with the San
Francisco Giants at a 54 and 43 record and they are two games back from the Dodgers in the NL. West.
So a lot of baseball to be played.
And I think that this team, you know, I mean, you can say, you can say this guy is falling.
You can feel the way you want to about it.
And I would not fault you for that.
This team had a very good run.
And when you start seeing them come into the All Star Break and post All Star Break, try to start to trip up like they have.
You know, I mean, this was a team that hadn't suffered a sweep all season long.
This is a team that had not suffered a shutout all season long.
And then all of a sudden things started falling apart.
And this team couldn't find a way to win.
It felt like there for a while.
And especially after that series with the Blue Jays,
I too was in the thought process of, man, are we even looking at a playoff team any longer?
But remember, like I said, there's a lot of games to be played,
a lot of opponents that the Diamondbacks still kind of have an advantage over.
A lot of teams that the Diamondbacks, like,
because they've taken care of business against the opponents,
they should this season.
So if the Diamondbacks can find a way to maybe gain experience,
from series like this one and even experience from the series like the one against the Blue Jays,
this young team can perhaps find a way to be very disruptive when the playoffs come around.
Yeah.
And this is this worst part of the schedule to start the second half is now over.
The Blue Jays were playing really well.
And D-BACs obviously got their teeth kicked in in Toronto.
This series, even though the Braves came in having lost two in a row, they're the Braves.
This is good.
This was a really, really tough series for the D-Backs.
Now you're going into Cincinnati.
That is still a tough matchup.
But the Reds have really slowed down.
They've lost seven of their last 10 games.
I know they've taken a couple now against the Giants.
I believe they just closed out a series win there.
But the Reds aren't, the Reds are not the Braves.
And I would also argue the Reds are not the Blue Jays.
I mean, their records are not that far apart.
But the Blue Jays play in the most brutal division in baseball.
And the Reds play in probably the worst division,
maybe the second worst division in baseball.
So, yeah, I mean, you've got, you've got the Reds next and then you come home.
You've got the Cardinals who are obviously struggling.
The Yankees are three games over 500 and they're in dead last place.
They're in dead last.
What kind of, what division?
What does this, how does division even make sense?
Yeah, the debat, like, this second half of the debacks is still very difficult.
I don't want to make it sound like they're not playing the Royals this weekend or something.
Sure.
But they're not, they're not playing like these top tier teams anymore for a couple of weeks.
They've got the Cardinals.
like I was saying to start that homestand next week.
Then they have the Mariners, who are another solid team.
These are not teams that you just feel like you can roll over.
They're solid teams, but they're not the Braves.
And I think the Diamondbacks are probably excited to not be playing teams like the Blue Jays
and the Braves anymore for the next couple weeks.
Then they got the Giants and the Twins on the road, which again, pretty winnable series until that.
Yeah, good teams, but also winnable series.
You got two games against the Dodgers, August 8th and August 9th here.
Chase Field, but Diamondbacks have a lot of road games in between there. If you have any road

With 10.
All right.
Then 10, but they're going to call it 12.
There's 10 teams and they're calling it the pack.
Get the fuck out of here.
What are we even doing anymore?
It changed the number.
But anyway.
The Big 12 was like the big 12 for 10 years with 18s or 10 teams.
Yeah, that's true.
That's true.

But of course.
Wouldn't be the first time.
Yeah, for sure.
To keep it locked right here because Jesse will be holding it down with the one and only Fosh in studio tomorrow.
But the Diamondbacks do have some more trade deadline decisions to make.
Obviously, we'd have no idea.
what decision they're going to go or even if they're going to be able to make a move at the trade deadline.
One name that the Arizona Diamondbacks have been connected to through reports and through rumors,
and including yesterday a tweet that said that they had a scout at the game scouting this particular pitcher.
The Arizona Diamondbacks do have an interest in Detroit Tigers left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez,
somebody who I am a huge fan of and have been hoping that they would target.
Hearing that they had scouts out there, especially at one of his better starts of the year,
was very encouraging.
So take it with a grain of salt.
I'm not adding variables or caveats here.
But I'd also say the Diamondbacks, as was reported,
we're not the only team interested in Eduardo Rodriguez.
So the interest seems to be high in the pitcher
from a lot of teams around Major League Baseball.
And there are some very good reasons why.
Yeah.
If we look at Erod's numbers for the season,
you can see why teams would be interested in this guy.
A 267 ERA this year is 0.97 Whip.
83 and 2 thirds innings.
He did miss a little bit of time, but when he has been on the field, he's averaging
pretty much right at six innings per start.
9.5 strikeouts per 9, 1.9 walks per 9.
A FIP of 315, maybe overperforming a little bit with that 267 ERA,
but he has been really good this year for the Detroit Tigers.
And I know we said Marcus Stroman is probably the best starting pitcher
available yesterday.
You can make a case.
It's actually this guy.
I would probably take Stroman's track record over Rodriguez's,
but he's had a really excellent season this year.
I think the idea here is that Eduardo Rodriguez is on a much less competitive team
that might be willing to negotiate.
He's going to get moved.
Yeah, for sure.
That's a fact of the matter.
I mean, unless I guess the tigers are still,
I mean,
the tigers are oddly enough,
like not that far out of the playoff race because they play in the AL Central.
He should get moved.
If the tigers buy it, the trade deadline,
It's going to be really bizarre.
I guess that's still a possibility, but I don't expect that.
They're currently six games out of first place in their division.
And they're not winning the wild card.
They are nine games below 500.
In fact, there's only one team with a winning record in that division right now.
It's the twins at 50 and 47.
So, yeah, not a very competitive division when it comes to that.
But let's take a look at the pros and cons that Erod has.
Of course, he's a lefty, and we talked about how that would be.
We have Tommy Henry in there.
but man, it would be a welcome site to have another lefty in the rotation.
And he's absolutely a clear number two or number three.
He just, he immediately,
he immediately joins the fold with Merrill Kelly and Zach Gallen is the best pitchers in this rotation
and immediately improves the Diamondbacks rotation.
He also has playoff experience.
Yeah, he does.
Not a ton.
Just a few different years that the Red Sox have been in the playoffs.
He pitched a little bit in those spots.
numbers weren't great, but he's at least been to the postseason and, you know, that stage is
not unfamiliar to him. The biggest thing on the con side is he does have an interesting contract
situation. Everyone's talking about Eduardo Rodriguez being a rental for the rest of the season,
which is most likely the case. However, he technically is under contract through 2026. He actually
has three more seasons on his deal after this one. He just has an opt out at the end of 2023 that
people are widely expecting him to take. Given the season he's had, it makes sense, right?
He can make more money than what's left on his deal based on the season that he's had this
year. But there is some risk here. If he were to get hurt, if there were, you know, God forbid,
some sort of significant injury down the stretch, he probably would opt in. And whatever team
traded for him would be on the hook for, I believe it's about $49 million over the next three
years pretty reasonable for a mid-rotation starter but depending on the severity of the injury yeah if
there was a significant injury somehow then you know maybe you wouldn't maybe you wouldn't want that so
yeah from the diamondbacks perspective there's a little bit of financial risk here and I think that's
probably the biggest obstacle for them whether they'd be willing to take that on or not his peripherals
aren't great and what what what do you mean when you say that specifically yeah I we mentioned his
FIP is a little bit higher than his ERA at 3.15.
Looking at some of the other numbers for him, it all points to a guy who's overperforming a little
bit.
Like I don't, I don't think anyone, frankly, really believes that Eduardo Rodriguez is like a mid-2
ERA guy.
Looking at some of the others, his ex-fip is 3.41.
His expected ERA from stat cast is 3.45.
They're all kind of like mid-3-ERA type stuff.
I don't really see him maintaining this level.
of performance the rest of the season.
And in some ways, it's a little unclear,
like how exactly is Eduardo Rodriguez suddenly taking this big step forward?
He's had good seasons in the majors before,
but he's never had a season with an ERA below 3.81 coming into this year.
And it's not, he's still throwing about 92, 93.
There aren't any, I'd have to dig deeper,
but to my knowledge, there aren't any obvious reasons why Eduardo Rodriguez,
you know, suddenly is taking this drastic step.
forward. So if you trade
for him and you're expecting him to be like
an ace caliber pitcher, which is what
his numbers suggest he is,
you might be a little disappointed.
You don't think he's quite as good as some of those
numbers would say. That's an interesting perspective
and I just can't help but think if other
teams, I'm not suggesting
the Diamondbacks would potentially package
Geraldo Perdomo in a trade
at this point. I feel like he's too valuable to their
future for now, right? But I wonder
if he wouldn't be that valuable anyway
because based on what he did last year,
versus what he did this year.
I have a feeling teams might have that kind of approach.
Like, hey, I don't know who the real Geraldo Perdomo is yet.
Yeah, it'd be a little weird for the debacks to trade him too,
because, like, not just for the future.
Like, they kind of need Perdomo this season.
No, absolutely.
Unless you're comfortable with Nick Ahmed, you know,
being your everyday shortstop moving forward,
she did come through in a couple big spots yesterday.
He did.
But I kind of doubt that Perdomo would be on the table,
unless the debacks were getting another shortstop,
maybe like as a rental or something in return.
coming up maybe i don't feel like any of the guys in the minor league system are anywhere close
to that point i don't think you're i don't think you're relying on yeah yeah right like blaze
alexander i don't think you necessarily want to totally rely on him the rest of the way either so yeah
but yeah Connor makes a good point his strikeout rate of 26.8% is walk rate of 5.5% those are both
really good like he has been better this year than he's been in the past another starting
pitcher that the a Arizona diamondbacks may end up targeting is a guy from the cleveland guardians but not
the one you think we're going to talk about.
We're talking about Aaron Savali, who happens to be one of the better pitchers right now
on this team this season.
And kind of, I guess you would say for the most part, but at least for a lot of baseball
fans kind of flying under the radar as far as a big name, but a guy that's been putting
up pretty impressive numbers this season.
Yeah, this is a guy.
I think it was John Morosi, who does some stuff for MLB Network and whatnot, an MLB insider.
He pointed to Aaron Savali as being one of the.
lesser known, maybe not quite talked about enough guys who could be available at the trade
deadline. If we look at his numbers this season, you can see why teams would be interested in him
in much the same way as they'd be interested in Eduardo Rodriguez, a 2.71 ERA this year,
a 1.08 whip. He has missed some time. I believe he had an oblique strain earlier in the season,
so he's only thrown 63 innings. Seven strikeouts per nine, 2.6 walks per nine. The peripherals here
are not as shiny as they are with Rodriguez.
He has a 372 FIP, as you see here.
But still a guy who would be an upgrade for the D-backs in their rotation.
They clearly have a spot to fill.
He's had a good defense playing behind him up there in Cleveland and the FIPP shows it.
But when you look at his numbers in his time in Cleveland, not great overall.
He has a 3.87 career ERA.
Yeah.
But still, again, what we were talking about when it comes to the Diamondbacks targeting someone,
I like things about Svali that kind of line up with the Diamondbacks timeline,
like their core that they currently have that they're building around.
Let's take a look at his pros and cons.
He's obviously a clear upgrade for them right now when it comes to the starting rotation.
And it's these other two factors.
The fact that he doesn't, his contract isn't very big and he's controllable through 2026.
So, I mean, it gives the Diamondbacks somebody that isn't just the rental.
and that for me is my biggest concern with a lot of these guys that they're pursuing.
It's what the cost is going to be to get them in a trade and how long they're going to be a part of this team going forward.
Yeah, I think it's through 2025.
I think we've got two more seasons.
Yeah, he's a free agent.
He'll be a free agent.
Yeah, in 2026.
So you'd have two more years after this one if you were to acquire him, which is I think the primary reason that teams would be interested in Savali that year.
It's not just a rental down the stretch.
He's, I think the first starting picture we've talked about, who's not just a rental down the stretch.
So there are some things to like here.
He's only making $2.6 million this year.
So his cost for the remainder of the season would be probably less than a million dollars.
So from a financial standpoint, he's not going to cost you much, and he's just arbitration eligible for the next couple of seasons.
There are some on the con side.
It would probably cost a lot to get him still because the Cleveland Guardians tend to kind of set
their price high and not really come off it.
They're very smart about it.
Yeah.
And they get what they want.
That's how that team was so young last year and did what they did in the playoffs.
He also bizarrely in his most recent start, I don't know if people have looked into this
or kind of figured out what exactly happened.
But his stuff was down in his last start at the Pittsburgh Pirates.
He still pitched pretty well overall, but his four seamer was down to 88.7 in that start.
and it averaged 93.3 just two weeks ago.
So pretty decent drop off there.
I don't know if there's an easy explanation to that.
I would guess there probably isn't.
So I'm sure that any teams looking at him
are probably going to do their homework
and try to figure out what's going on there.
And that brings us to the last thing here,
which is durability as a con of trading for Savali.
He has never thrown more than 124 in a third innings
in a season in the majors,
which is not that big of a number.
He had, I believe it was forearm tightness at one point last year,
which of course is always a red flag.
I mentioned the oblique thing earlier this season.
He's just had a hard time really staying on the field for a full season.
So if you do trade for him and you get those two more seasons after this one,
you kind of have to know that you're probably not getting 180 innings out of this guy
over the next two years.
You're probably getting 20 starts or so,
and then you're going to have to piece it together with some depth options from there.
So there are some risk factors here, but he would be an upgrade for the debacks.
He's more of a mid-rotation guy than at top of the rotation guy,
but the debacks could use a mid-rotation guy for sure.
So this definitely could make sense for that reason.
His consistency over his last few starts has been fairly good too.
He's given up five earned.
The results have been good.
Yeah, five earned runs in his last four starts.
So that's something, especially from a,
a team that's lacked consistency
even from their top starters, right?
I mean, even from Merrill Kelly and Zach,
Merrill Kelly has probably been more consistent
this year than Zach Gallen,
but we still have a lot of like, again,
like Gallons, home road splits
and a lot of things that are kind of odd with these guys.
And again, I think stability is something
that Diamondbacks definitely need.
Even if you know, you know,
like what we said at one point about Zach Davies,
like I would happily take Zach Davies back
that you know you're going to get five innings
and three earn runs out of it.
of every time out there.
At least you know what you're going to get out of them
and at least it's consistent.
And Zach Davies, again, this sounds weird to say.
I wish him the best on the MRI.
I mean, I hope that there's, I hope Zach Davy,
like it really does feel like one of those situations
where we did see Zach Davies kind of turn
and go from being a guy that they could kind of rely on
as a back end starting pitcher to a guy that you just really
had no clue what you were going to get out of him out there.
So maybe this injury is something,
that's been bothering him.
And when you're a professional athlete, sometimes you can find yourself like sincerely, like,
putting it off and not thinking it's actually impacting you when it is at the end of the day.
But the look from this guy has given me is a lot of skepticism still, so I'm not going to say anything more.
But what we will say.
We don't know.
I mean, yeah, as far as we're aware, Zach Davies is having an MRI and this is a real injury
that's been bothering him and we'll see where it goes.
I'm still not ready to just move on, though, from the game one performance.
So I'm just going to slap the label on there.
Zach Davies in Game One, he gets our OG's performance to forget.

Lastly, of course, we know football seasons around the corner.
And we know not only do you have to get ready for that, but with this Arizona Diamondbacks team,
you have to get ready for playoff season, right?
You got to get ready for October.
Got to be comfortable.
Go grab yourself a new lounge, chair, a new couch, whatever you need from our friends at more furniture.
This guy, of course, he's going to recommend the chase lounges.
but I'm going to try to steer you in other directions.
Maybe a nice seven-piece living room set.
Maybe something a little bit more advanced.
You can't always be sexy all the time,
just lounging around on a chase lounge with your arm out like that.
Like, get out of here.
He does it, but he's different.
He's built different.
Right.

Got anything else for me, Friedman?
I think that's all I got.
Series win for the debacks, right?
Yeah.
At the end of the day, maybe that's not what people want to hear right now.
They were very close to a sweep once again.
And once again, they were not able to convert on that.
But taking two out of three from this series in this series is huge for the Diamondbacks.
It was a big bounce back from what happened in Toronto.
Someone in the chat earlier asked who was coming to San Diego Comic Con or like, what am I going?
Look, I know all this.
the actors are on strike. And if I'm being
honest, there's a good chance. The reason why I got
a pass is because all the actors are going on
strike and one just ended up becoming available
for me. But what I will say is
I'm a comic books fan. So I'm
going for the actual comic books, not for movies,
not for TV shows. I'm going there
for toys and I'm going there for comic books.
So if I can grab you anything, let
me know. But you don't get any of my freebies.
So I'm just telling you that right now.
Mo Schubert, I miss you. I hope you're having
a wonderful afternoon wherever in the world
you're at because he's very elusive, much
like Jesse Friedman.
But you can keep track of this man over on Twitter at Jesse N. Friedman.
That's F-R-I-E-D-M-A-N, by the way, because apparently I never spell it.
I am at K-U-N-A-R-M-A-W-R-N-E-R-W-A-N.
You can figure out how to spell that.
I do spell Damon Dogg, so I understand his jealousy.
Yeah.
You can get Damon on Twitter at Damon, DA-W-G.
I spell it every time.
I even make you bark.
You got to do a little ro-r-r-r-r- before you follow them because we are Damon's dogs.
But, of course, you guys are awesome for being here.
Our show is at PHNX underscore Dbacks, but all roads lead to at PHNX underscore sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
We appreciate you guys so much for stopping by.
We thank you for your time.
And remember, kids, baseball is fun, but it's really, it really is so much more fun when you can complete the sweep.
