Starting point is 00:01:10 NX GVax podcast right here on PHNX. My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX. This guy next to me is the one and only Sean DePaz, occasionally known as your MVP of PHNX. And boy, we needed an MVP tonight. But the Diamondbacks do lose game one of the 2023 season to the Los Angeles Dodgers by account of 8 to 2.
Starting point is 00:01:33 If you guys watched our watch-along party, if you guys have been with us all night, first thank you and bless you. Second, we are not very happy right now. We were happier if you were watching that watch-along party earlier, maybe around the end of the second inning, top of the third. We were kind of on cloud nine. And then things fell apart for this team very quickly.
Starting point is 00:01:56 Unfortunately, Zach Gallen, who the Diamondbacks very much need to be on point this season and for in order for them to have a postseason chance, started the game very strong, but he fizzled out as the game went on. Is that the best way to say? DFA M and Lungoria. Wow, he's, look, look, he's emotional, but he's not wrong. I promise those would be my first words. DFA, Evan Lungoria.
Starting point is 00:02:20 Yeah, I get it. Yeah, man, I mean, that was, it was. It sucked. Disappointing. I think it was ultimately disappointing because of the first two winnings being so good. Yeah. You got real excited real fast and you're like, I knew it. This is a playoff team.
Starting point is 00:02:33 Yeah. And then they did not look like a playoff team for the rest of that game. They were doing a lot of those small things right. They were driving in runs. They got an early lead. And even when they weren't able to, you know, capitalize, I'm sure the way they would want to or any baseball team would want to, but they were able to put runs up on the border. Yeah, yeah, 100%. And obviously, this is game one of 162.
Starting point is 00:02:53 So any reaction that we were having was going to be dramatic regardless. Like, you can't have, you can't take any opinions away from the first game of a season when you were playing one of the best teams of baseball. I mean, and over at CHGO, they're popping bottles of champagne and talking about winning the NL Central already. Yeah. Yeah, you got to temper your expectation. And the ALE Central. And the ALE Central. The White Sox beat the Astros.
Starting point is 00:03:14 We are sitting at the bottom of the All City Division and we aren't happy about that. Yeah, but we are not happy right now. The 8 to 2 loss also not something great, not something you want to see. There for a minute the Diamondbacks were still kind of in it. You know, they were down four to two. They were down five to two. And then things just continued to escalate the Diamondbacks. Couldn't really get things back on track.
Starting point is 00:03:35 And I mean, again, offensively, things were. great defensively. Things were pretty good. They made some good plays, but Zach Gallin, once again, not great out there. Four and two-thirds innings pitched, six hits, five earn runs, three walks, seven strikeouts, which was pretty impressive considering how short
Starting point is 00:03:52 his outing was. And those strikeouts were coming against some pretty good baseball players. He was. He was getting mokey. Bats. Freddie Freeman? Freddie Freeman, absolutely. But didn't really have the run support. The Diamondbacks as we showed you earlier on our Twitter
Starting point is 00:04:08 account and kind of discussed on on the on the watch along Kyle Lewis let off tonight for the Arizona Diamondbacks now I'll I'll preface this with saying everybody every single human being in this office wanted Kyle Lewis to have a wonderful night nobody nobody was against this nobody was really against the decision but but every other everybody in this office also was like why is he batting why is he batting lead off like we get it we get the right-handed batters going up against Julio Urius. We get that the Diamondbacks didn't have this access to right-handed batters last season.
Starting point is 00:04:41 So they were kind of just stuck having a left-handed lineup up against somebody that's so dominant against left-handers. But I really felt like Kyle Lewis leading, hitting leadoff was it didn't seem to make a whole lot of sense considering the speed on this team. Diamondbacks have a lot of speedy guys on this team. Got to have a lot of guys that can get on base. And Kyle Lewis did not have a great night. Oh, for four, three strikeouts.
Starting point is 00:05:08 Again, not as bad of a night as Max Muncie had with his platinum sombrero. But again, Kyle Lewis, not effective at all out of the leadoff position. And the Diamondbacks, honestly, like, we can say this, but I know it sounds like a bullshit thing. So I completely understand if you're watching don't really feel this way. But the Diamondbacks did have a lot of bad luck tonight because a lot of the Dodgers balls that fell into play were softly hit balls. Will Smith, who was incredible tonight, had a single with an exit velocity of 60.8 miles per hour. Are you kidding me? So tonight just seemed to be one of those situations where the Diamondbacks just the things weren't falling in their direction.
Starting point is 00:05:50 Yeah, no, it is. And like I said, and that's another reason why, like, it's a game one of 162. Like any reaction you're going to have is a little dramatic. But there was nothing like encouraging really about this. And like getting back to the Kyle Lewis thing, I can respect. Tory trying to kind of give, I guess, reward Kyle Lewis for the spring that he had and giving him a little bit of a vote of confidence. But especially when you put it in the context of Corby and Carroll batting seventh all the way that far down in the lineup, it just is a tough pill to swallow. And then it ultimately didn't turn out that well.
Starting point is 00:06:20 But like you said, the Dodgers just got some of the luck that World Series contenders tend to get. I don't know if there's much more to it than that. I mean, when you're getting Brandon Fott in the chat saying it, like when you're getting. a home run from Outman, who was their number nine prospect. Like, it's, that's tough. And I mean, Gowland got through the first two times of the lineup, relatively unscathed. And then I had mentioned it during the watch along. It's the dreaded third time for the lineup that analytics always warn you about.
Starting point is 00:06:53 And that's when things started to kind of go off the rails, which sucks. But not that I am not of the party that, or that Tori should have taken him out and should have bent the knee to analytics like we have seen. Sure, sure. Previously, shout out Blake's now. But it just is, it's tough that it turned out that way. And again, it's tough that you're getting production from the bottom of the lineup, especially when you, you more or less shut down their top two hitters in mooky beds and
Starting point is 00:07:21 Freddie Freeman. That's the most, particularly mooky bets. That's the most frustrating part. You know what I mean? You shouldn't lose to the Diamondbacks and have mooky bets go. You shouldn't lose to the Dodgers when mooky bets is going over. Right. And the Dodgers out hit the D-Backs 12 to 4.
Starting point is 00:07:32 So it wasn't exactly a close game. Yeah. the eight to two loss isn't great. Kevin Ginkle had a weird situation where he got called for not coming to a full stop or for his delivery essentially. Quick pitching, more or less. Quick pitching.
Starting point is 00:07:47 Yeah, it was a basis loaded situation and he had an 0 in one count against the batter. And he did kind of his weird like squat down motion that he does. He's done this before. Apparently he's talked to officials, umpires. about this during the spring about whether or not his squat move was still illegal. He said he was told it's not considered part of the wind-up.
Starting point is 00:08:13 Not sure why the batter has to be engaged, if that's the case when it came to this situation tonight. But Tori Lavello did say afterwards that that he felt like Kevin Ginkle was in the wrong. Yeah, more or less, yeah. I mean, as
Starting point is 00:08:29 Tori put it, you know, he at least thought that he made eye contact with him, but he wasn't paying attention to where feet were. Yeah. It wasn't in the box. Yeah. Um, and I don't know. I mean, obviously this is just, this is going to be how, this is how it's going to be for the first couple of weeks of this season. It's guys are going to, are going to take a little bit for guys to adjust. Yeah, that's very true. To these new rules. It's going to, it's going to take a matter of time for everybody to adjust. You can even say that about the umpires adjusting to the rules, right? And, and enforcing them and
Starting point is 00:09:02 Because, I mean, let's be real. Umps are, they have egos. Like, they don't like being shown up. You saw that with the J.T. Romuto, um, ejection. That was the most absurd ejection I've ever seen in my whole life. It was, it was ridiculous. But you, this is how I'm sorry. They don't like being shown up.
Starting point is 00:09:20 If you're not familiar with that, by the way, J.T. Rial Muto went to go, uh, get a ball from the umpire to throw back to the picture. Did not look back at him. I was looking forward the whole time. Now, mind you, just to give you some context, the previous play, the umpire. had thrown the ball himself back to the pitcher instead of handing it to the catcher. Real Muto held his hand back. When a ball wasn't placed in his hand fast enough,
Starting point is 00:09:41 he figured maybe the umpire was just throwing it, so he took his hand away. The umpire was about to set a ball into his hand, and Rial Muto took his hand away just as the umpire dropped it, dropping the ball on the floor. Then this umpire for some reason got all tangled up in his goddamn feelings and decided to throw him out of the game for that in a spring training exhibition game.
Starting point is 00:10:04 The fuck are we even doing anymore? Are you kidding me? Getting back to what we were actually talking about, umps clearly have a little bit of an ego. And so there's going to be some adjustment in how they enforce this stuff because they don't like being challenged by players. That's not necessarily what happened in the situation,
Starting point is 00:10:20 but my point being that players, managers, um, it's all going to be a little bit of an adjustment. So I expect there to be some, a little bit of a rough, a learning curve. Sure. Through these first couple of weeks. Sure. Understandable.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Understandable. Urius did it tonight against the Diamondbacks. He had a great night. Again, a great pitcher. Julio Urius is a fantastic pitcher. But you could say if you wanted to play devil's advocate here, he got some pretty good calls that it didn't seem like Zach Gallen was getting. Zach Gallen was pretty outstanding there for two innings.
Starting point is 00:10:54 And honestly, it seemed like not getting some of the calls may have definitely thrown him off off track a bit. Dodgers were five for 11 with runners in scoring position. Diamondbacks didn't have nearly 11 opportunities with runners in scoring position going just one for three with runners in scoring position.
Starting point is 00:11:13 So it's kind of the same old story about the Diamondbacks not really being able to generate offense and get guys on base. Yeah. No, it's tough. I mean, it goes through a lot here. He's the Sun Devils host. He produces the coyotes and now here he is here on opening day.
Starting point is 00:11:34 Did I mention I'm a Buffalo Bills fan? All I know is pain. Yikes. Yeah. And someone mentioned it during the watch alone. Like it is important to remember that this is a really young team. Like even Kyle Lewis is like not, he's not old. He hasn't been doing this very long. Obviously, Evan Ligoria has. And that's a whole other thing. And I don't understand why he is even on this roster, let alone starting over Josh Rojas, but whatever. Um, but yeah. He really, he really went with numbers against left hand pitching. Yeah, which, like he went out with here.
Starting point is 00:12:06 Like on one hand, I understand. For me, ultimately it's, it's, how do you adjust from here? Right. Like I, I, it's game one. Like I keep trying to say, it's game one. You can't overreact. I understand, again, rewarding Kyle Lewis for a strong spring. I understand, um, you know, Corbyn Carroll's struggle against lefties type thing.
Starting point is 00:12:27 But, yeah. Kyle Lewis is definitely a hard. It's a hard argument to say he didn't deserve to be in the lineup. The Elinogoria thing I don't understand at all. That's the one where I'm really scratching my head. But I feel like the bigger thing there is about him leading off. Yeah. Right.
Starting point is 00:12:43 Really what it comes down to is Kyle Lewis has shown power this spring. He hasn't shown speed. He hasn't shown, I mean, he's hit well. So he's gotten on base quite a bit. But it's been kind of more of a power position. So I don't really understand some of the lineup construction. I mean, I guess obviously it's easier to say that in retrospect looking back on it and questioning it. To be fair, we were questioning it as soon as the lineup drop.
Starting point is 00:13:08 We didn't understand Kyle Lewis being there. We didn't understand Evan LaGroarroo starting. We didn't understand Corbyn Carroll being that low in the lineup. And those were the three things that ultimately like Damienin had mentioned it. Kyle Lewis got more at bats than Corbyn Carell. We had an explanation for that because Corbyn Carroll was terrible to spring against left-handed pitching. and that really is what it comes down to. They were playing a lot of the numbers.
Starting point is 00:13:29 They weren't wrong. I mean, Corby and Carroll, yeah, he hit down lower in the lineup, but Corbyn Carroll also went Ofer 3 and didn't have great at bats. A very different offer than Kyle Lewis, I would say. Yeah, I mean, he was making contact and put the ball in play. He definitely was. And honestly, this team is at a point now. We talked to Derek Hall today.
Starting point is 00:13:49 We were out there at Chase Field, me, and this guy. We were trying all the food. We're going to talk about that here shortly. but Derek Hall had a very, very reserved attitude about going into this season. And honestly, after watching game one, he kind of seems like a genius considering that we, me and this guy heard him say it multiple times today in a forum that really didn't require it. Not a lot of people were asking him about how he thought the diamondbacks were going to do this year. But when we would bring up the team or bring up to the excitement of opening day,
Starting point is 00:14:21 he would kind of instantly go to tempering expectations due to the youth of this team and due to how basically just how erratic baseball can be, especially for a young team that doesn't have a lot of experience in baseball. When you talk about that lack of experience, that's the reason why someone like Evan Langoria is in the lineup today. If you talk about how poorly he was hitting against left-handed pitching, it's the reason why Corbyn Carroll was so low. And of course, when you got a guy hitting nearly 500, you can't wait to get him into the lineup and have him hit as high as you can. And that's the, that's the mistakes that was made today, right? But sometimes with baseball, it's a matter of going deeper than just, you know, who's hitting hot now and what the numbers are. I brought up like Snell. Like sometimes you have to just go off field.
Starting point is 00:15:09 Analytics are not going to, are not going to dictate everything because analytics are a generalization. They are a look at a trend, but the reality is is that it's a trend because it doesn't happen that way every single time. Like there's variation to it. And part of that is because of circumstance. And you have to take that into account. Yeah, fair enough. I'm not going to sit here and pretend that I'm smarter than Tori. But obviously, again, in hindsight, it's easy.
Starting point is 00:15:36 It's easy to go back in hindsight. And it's easy because it didn't work out. Had it worked out, we would have been like, fuck, Tori's a genius. Right. Like that's really what it comes down to, right? But Kyle Lewis, of course, you know, of course had to have a terrible day considering that they tried to this experiment of him hitting lead off. There's also the fact that this is still the Dodgers at Dodgers Stadium on opening day. It was already a very difficult task. And to be honest, at the very least, I feel like we saw glimpses of what the Diamondbacks can do against this lineup. and we also saw glimpses of how fast everything can fall apart for this team. You know, I mean, they were in this game, not, not for, you can't say they were in it for
Starting point is 00:16:19 the majority of it, but they were in this game at one point. And they look solid. And then, you know, you have the bottom of the fifth where things really fall apart and the Dodgers take the lead. And the Diamondbacks kind of did what they did last year, which is they don't really have an answer at times for when the offense dries up or when things turn around on them when they lose a lead. They don't have an answer for that. Yeah. These, these are all things we saw from them last year. But I will say there were some
Starting point is 00:16:47 discouraging and encouraging signs from the bullpen. Yeah. 100%. How, you know, obviously how bad this bullpen was last year and how things have turned around for them this year. The Diamondbacks only scored two earn runs. So this loss is on Gallen regardless. Gallen gave up five earn. So everything after that is just kind of extra misery on the loss, right? but Cole Solcer did not look good. He gave up two earn runs in his one inning of work. At least Kyle Nelson, the guy that they were going to send down to Reno came in, did not give up an earn run.
Starting point is 00:17:20 He gave up a couple of hits, but he also had two strikeouts and was able to hold, you know, at least the game to where it was at. Carlos Vargas had a super amp coming in and throwing 100 miles an hour right out of the gate. Yeah, that was fun. He gave up only a single earned run. And then Kevin Ginkle had two thirds of an inning pitched with one strikeout. So as much as, you know, the bullpen didn't do the thing that we wanted it to do, you know, at least there are some encouraging signs from this bullpen. And really, Cole Solcer seemed to be the one, you know, pitcher out of the pen that didn't really work for this team coming in right after Gallin exited.
Starting point is 00:17:58 Yeah, yeah. I mean, someone mentioned in the chat earlier. It was just awesome seeing someone hit triple digits first pitch out of the pen. Like I had mentioned it when it happened, like over under 99 and a half. Um, and he hit a hundred on the first place. Like that was really awesome to see. But yeah. You're a good odds maker and I took the over on that.
Starting point is 00:18:15 Yeah, you took you over. We both felt pretty good about it. Um, yeah. And I mean, right? Ginkle. No earn runs. Nelson, no earn runs. And I mean,
Starting point is 00:18:25 Solster obviously giving up the two earn runs is not great, but it's not, um, at that point, like you mentioned, it didn't matter. Yeah. And, and part, and obviously a large part of it is, um, gallon, but also you need to score more than two runs. Yeah. Like very few pitchers are going to win in today's baseball without, especially with the new rules without run support.
Starting point is 00:18:44 Run support. And so again, again, Gowan pitched really well for the first two times of the lineup. And if you're not getting any run support, like it's going to be hard to keep that. And a gallon had other things going on. I mean, he kept losing his pitch calm. Like, yeah, that was wild to us. To see that pitchcon just get tossed towards second base. Gallant was getting balls thrown back to him from, uh, Gabriel Moreno.
Starting point is 00:19:06 And, and the throwback was knocking his pitchcom. off his glove, which was, I mean, it was distracting to us. So I can only imagine how. Yeah, we, that shit got tossed. Was that just, what was this? What just happened? But we need, we need some more information on this. We need some more insider access.
Starting point is 00:19:22 And, of course, nobody is better at that than our very own Jesse Friedman, who is right now in Los Angeles. He is coming. He's just coming out of player access and talking to Tori Lobello. So we're going to have Jesse join us here. in a minute but in the meantime make sure do you guys oh there he is jesse's here jessie what not in a minute derrick don't don't you dare delay my my entry into the show come on i know i won't delay it any further but uh welcome in buddy i hope you're not as miserable uh there as we were watching this game there at
Starting point is 00:19:56 the end but how's everything going in los angeles yeah i mean christia walker was one for three with an rbi i don't know why you guys are so sad and impressed right now i think i think we need to raise He, once we get to the positives, I've got things to say. I was happy from Ketel-Mart. Oh, Jesse, who comes with the positivity right away, buddy. What are you hearing after the game about this loss? Kind of the usual stuff. Honestly, nothing too crazy stood out from the post-game interviews.
Starting point is 00:20:27 Toro Lavello talked about how, you know, this game was great through a couple of innings. Diamondbacks had a two-nothing lead. You're feeling good. Zach Gallen was really on his game. I think early on in this one. The velocity ticked up from what we saw in spring training. That was something that I was certainly looking at early on. But as the game progressed, some of that velocity did go away.
Starting point is 00:20:51 By the end of this start, Zach Allen was more in the 91, 92 range, which is something that we kind of saw in spring training a little bit, that the VILA would maybe be a little higher early in the game, but he just couldn't really maintain it. Something to continue watching, I'm not all that concerned about it. his four seamer average 93.1 in this game when all was set and done. Last year was 94.1. So at this point, you're only one mile an hour off.
Starting point is 00:21:15 I'm not really worried about that too much. But the point was, Zach Gallen just couldn't put guys away when he really needed to. There were a lot of two strike counts. And I know he had seven strikeouts. He did put a lot of guys away. But it seemed like he was struggling in some of those two strike situations to get guys to swing and miss. And also just to get some soft.
Starting point is 00:21:36 contact, you know, I think Gallen maybe was pitching a little bit too much for the strikeout at times in this game, and ultimately that didn't go very well for him. Well, and we talked about how even some of the soft contact didn't work out for him, considering that Will Smith was able to get an RBI single on a 60.8 mile per hour exit below. So things just didn't seem to go the Diamondbacks way tonight in any way. We were talking about Kyle Lewis batting leadoff and I was curious to get your thoughts about that. Obviously, before the game might have been more of a, you know, might have felt a little better about it than the results.
Starting point is 00:22:17 Yeah, that was something I asked Tori about before the game. Kyle Lewis has never hit leadoff in a major league game in his career. Obviously he hasn't played that many games at this point because of all the injuries, but he never hit lead off once with the Seattle Mariners. This was his first go at that. 0 for 4 with three strikeouts and a pop-up, not exactly what you're looking for. Tori after the game didn't sound concerned about it.
Starting point is 00:22:42 You know, he basically said it's one game. Kyle Lewis is a good hitter. You know, some of the swings weren't great, but I think that's something you have to keep in mind here, right? And I know you guys talked about that before I hopped on. This is just one game. And I know it doesn't feel like that, right?
Starting point is 00:22:59 I mean, it's opening day. We're putting this team under a magnifying glass that we will not put them under for the rest of the season, right? I need you a little bit different, Jesse. I need you here to temper my, by my, my, my, my, my, my overreaction. Hey, me and this guy, we're just overreacting together. That's all that. It's the end of the goddamn world over here right now, Jesse.
Starting point is 00:23:19 Kyle Lewis bad lead off went 0 for four with three strikeouts. Do you know who else bat lead off and went oh for four with three strikeouts? A guy named mooky bets. If Kyle Lewis wants to be like mooky bets, I'm not going to complain about that in the slightest. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, Mookie didn't have a great game. But you feel like between him, Freddie Freeman, and Will Smith at the top of that Dodger
Starting point is 00:23:42 lineup, I mean, it really is kind of a murderer's row that they have set up there. And, you know, in a game like this, you see maybe Mookie Betts doesn't have his best of games, but then you've got Will Smith, you know, going three for four, whatever it was by the end of the game. He had a really, really solid night. So, yeah, this Dodgers lineup is not as deep as it used to be, but it's still really freaking good. And I think a lot of people forgot like, oh, the Dodgers had a lackluster
Starting point is 00:24:07 off season. Like, surely this lineup is not anywhere near where it was in the past. And it's still one of the best in the game for sure. They still have like three other teams best player. I'm staring daggers through Jacob because Jacob has been shitting on this Dodgers lineup. Can we talk about the
Starting point is 00:24:23 Will Smith stuff with Jacob? Should we talk about the Will Smith stuff with Jacob? Oh, Jacob before the game was basically not charlatelotly casting Will Smith off and he's like, who else do they got? Will Smith? Listen.
Starting point is 00:24:38 Three for four. I'm listening, one of those hits was a four RBI. Check swing that went 60 miles an hour and found a spot in the outfield. Like, what do you want? That's true. He's single-handedly outscored the debacks. That's true.
Starting point is 00:24:50 But Will Smith was was toying with with Zach Allen, honestly. I mean, I mean, those like it wasn't, sometimes guys get lucky, right? Like sometimes, you know, you have a, well, excuse me, swing. It's a bloop and it falls. Will Smith, I think, knew exactly what he was doing. Maybe the last one was a little bit lucky. I know that one was kind of a half swing. But he went opposite field.
Starting point is 00:25:10 Oh, the one that was like a foot out of the strike zone, you mean? Yes, that one was a little. That is the cutter, the cutter that was a foot off the outside part of the plate. But he was going opposite field against Zach Allen every single about and it worked every single time. And when you're using that approach, you're not necessarily going to have a 110 mile an hour exit velocity or something. So I don't really think that Will Smith was, you know, know, lucky. I think he had a really, really good approach against Zach Allen. So what is in store for the debacks moving forward, Jesse?
Starting point is 00:25:40 How do they bounce back and make something of this? Or as Tori would say, flush this loss and move on tomorrow? I mean, it's one game, right? Like, it's literally one game. And it was an ugly game. I'm not going to sugarcoat it. The diamond backs looked overmatched. They looked as overmatched as they have in the past, right?
Starting point is 00:26:01 We were hoping that this Diamondbacks team, this is a new year. You know, last year they went five and 14 against the Dodgers, but this is a new year and maybe they can hold their own a little bit. They didn't show that tonight. They looked completely overmatched in honestly every single fast of the game. They got beat. But I think despite that, it is just one game. And if you come out tomorrow and, you know, find a way to get a win against Dustin May with him
Starting point is 00:26:26 on the mound, then you're feeling fine, right? the Diamondbacks don't need to sweep this series. They don't need to even win three out of four. If you're able to get out of L.A. with a series split, I think you're really, really happy with that. And even if it is,
Starting point is 00:26:40 you know, losing three out of four games. Like, even that, like, you can come back from that. There's 162 of these things, right? So you have to keep that bigger picture in mind.
Starting point is 00:26:49 No. And I like reminding people. I want to overreact. I want to overreact right now. It's, they don't have to play the Dodgers as much this year. That's right. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:26:56 it's less games against this division. And the rest of the league is not as good as the Dodgers. Most of the league is not as good as the Dodgers. So all right. One thing I do want to point out before we say farewell is, I don't know if you guys noticed this. I wasn't able to watch the TV broadcast. But we had some interesting situations with the lights at Dodgers Stadium. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:17 Yeah. We heard of this at all. They were like, they were changing them while a ball was in play. Were they not? Yeah. I don't know while a ball was in play necessarily. But yeah, both Zach Gowling. and Carlos Vargas had had their warmups interrupted at different stages of this game.
Starting point is 00:27:34 Apparently this was a new thing. This was the first time that the Dodgers have ever made a practice of doing that to the lights on a regular basis throughout the game. And they did. I mean, it happened a whole bunch throughout this game. And yeah, Tori Lavello did say after the game that he certainly plans on, you know, talking with his staff about it and, you know, letting Major League Baseball know how they feel. At one point, Tori was asked, like, do you feel like this was,
Starting point is 00:27:58 done to your guys, but not not to the Dodgers at all. And he kind of danced around that question. I get the sense that maybe Tori did feel like it was, you know, only affecting the Diamondbacks and conveniently, you know, maybe it wasn't affecting the Dodgers as much. But, I mean, at the end of the day, they lost the game 8 to 2. So we're not, we're not trying to make the case that the lights are the reason the diamondbacks lost this game. But it was interesting and it's certainly something that I think Major League Baseball will have to
Starting point is 00:28:28 take a look at and I'd be pretty surprised if they're allowed to do that at Dodger Stadium moving forward. Do you, uh, you have anything else for us in regards to this series, Jesse? How is, how has L.A. been treating you while you've been out there? I've been so worried about you. It's, it's freaking cold, man. It's way too cold. Uh, probably, uh, I did. I've got, I've got my, my coat rocking here. Uh, yeah, it was about 49 degrees. I think it's about 49 degrees right now, which is not the way it's supposed to be in Los Angeles in April. So, not on. It's pretty cool here too. Yeah, yeah, I don't know. I don't know what's what's going on in the Southwest right now. I think by Saturday it's supposed to warm up maybe a
Starting point is 00:29:15 little bit. We're supposed to get like 68 degrees or something then. So looking forward to that. But yeah, it was it was about as cold as I think you'll ever see Dodgers Stadium here tonight. That's fantastic. Well, I'm glad you could be there for it. We thank you for being out there. We will talk to you again tomorrow with more updates from game two of the year. And I promise you, I will try not to overreact about this loss. But I can only try. I can't. I can't promise you. We both know that you're not going to do that, Derek. Thank you. So I don't even try to say it at this point. All right. Well, I miss you. I miss you. And I'm glad you know me so well. Stay safe out there in L.A. And we will be back to. tomorrow with some more information from Jesse Friedman. Make sure to follow him on Twitter at Jesse and Friedman for all sorts of updates on this series.
Starting point is 00:30:03 And for more fun stuff, maybe on what he's eating. I'm still curious about what he's eating. Yeah. Yeah, I'm going to eat some tacos in your honor tomorrow there. I'll keep posted on that. Proud of you. All right, buddy. We'll talk to you tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:30:17 All right, guys. Bye, Jesse. Thanks, Jesse. Jesse actually sent us some information in regards to another thing that happened on tonight on the field, which was Kevin Ginkle, again, having a little bit of an issue with his delivery, if you will.
Starting point is 00:30:35 We actually have some video of Ginkl's response to what happened tonight. What I had known was when the guy is getting into the box, apparently both feet have to be in the box. And my knowledge was his right foot was in the box and he was looking at me, showing that he was engaged and ready to go. And I know he has an open stance. So apparently his left foot was on the chalk. And it was just
Starting point is 00:31:01 kind of, it was a weird thing. So the guy warned me, the umpire warned me. And so I think I had plenty of time on the clock still. But I think for them, they were just trying to slow it down and, you know, work the clock a little bit. So next time, kind of the same situation, he was pretty much in the box. His left foot was on the chalk, but he was looking at me. And so I think he would, look at me and then look down, tap the plate, and then go. So it was just kind of, it was a, it's a weird rule. I, I had been, I was thinking that when he was looking at me, he is ready to go. And so that was my knowledge to it.
Starting point is 00:31:42 I don't think I deserve to be bald there, but, you know, it is what it is. I fucking hate this so much. I hate that so much. Like, we talk about the things that we like about the pitch clock. including tonight's what two hour and 35 minute game time those are things that are positives but when you have a guy like kevin ginkle basically saying he has no clue what he really did wrong it's it's a bit wild yeah yeah no and like i said earlier there's going to be a bit of a learning curve but i mean there there needs to be like uh okay someone messes up they need to be able to understand
Starting point is 00:32:19 how they messed up and like be able to fix it from there and and like he said you said said the batter's looking at them there's just this there's this you know being ready in the box kind of thing and since so many batters have different stances and different you know different you know ways of of conducting themselves in the box you you can't make it out to blame the pitcher every time yeah because then what are you going to have like pitchers or batters dee exactly that's what I was about to say pitcher right there shouldn't be able to to play the clock in a way that the pitchers aren't able to like it needs to be it needs to be fair um and i'm I'm not going to say it here and be like, oh, woe is the pitcher.
Starting point is 00:32:57 Like, the poor old debats are being cheated. But, like, it does need. There needs to be a fairness to it. Like, they need to figure out how to apply this rule equitably. Yes. And I don't, it doesn't really seem like, and I don't think it's like the, I don't think the ums are trying to be unfair. And I don't think the rules unfair, but I just, again, there's a learning curve to this.
Starting point is 00:33:18 And I don't think they have figured out a way to enforce it equitably yet. And obviously, like, I mean, you talk. about it in the off season leading up to the season. Like there's going to be teams and players and managers trying to figure their way out, the way around the rules. And there's going to be an adaptation to it. How can we make this rule work in our favor? How can we find some sort of competitive advantage here to this rule, right?
Starting point is 00:33:42 And in this case, a batter coming into the box and kind of like messing with when he's ready, thus causing the pitcher to get a ball because of it. I mean, even in the grand scheme of things, even if an outs recorded, like there's no, you can't quantify how that messes with a pitcher's delivery, how they play the game, or how that's going to affect them going forward, right? Especially when they don't understand what they did wrong in that scenario, considering that a batter got in the box, they put their foot in the box, they had the bat in their hand, they looked at the pitcher.
Starting point is 00:34:17 That's the sign that they are ready to go. A pitcher, a batter absolutely shouldn't be doing any of that stuff until they're actually in the box ready to go. And I'm never going to sit here and feel bad for umpires. But like, they have a lot. They have a lot going on now. And we, we talk about like maybe Eureas getting some calls that Gellon didn't get or whatever. And like, it's obviously if the alms have a lot going on all the time. So it should still be applied equitably.
Starting point is 00:34:45 But like, they got a lot going on. Yeah. They're human beings. They're human beings. So it's like, I'm watching this guy's feet. when he gets in the box. I'm making sure that this guy, I'm looking at this clock.
Starting point is 00:34:56 And then when I get to a certain point, I can't look at the clock anymore. So I have to rely on a little buzzing device on my wrist to tell me when the clock has hit zero. And so in the back of the mind, you're always kind of waiting for that buzz. Yeah. And then you're also having to call balls and strikes on pitches going 95 miles an hour. It's just crazy.
Starting point is 00:35:13 And then everything is sped up on top of that. Right. So it's like the time that they're used to having in between this stuff. None of it, none of it seems to be fair. They'll figure it out though I'm not by no means am I sitting here being like God I need to change back the rules
Starting point is 00:35:28 Like I do think the rules are the right move Right but it's just gonna take a little bit It's a matter of making it makes sense And making it not impact the game in a grander way Where you're literally impacting the outcome Because of these rules right But rules are meant to be followed And I'm okay with that as long as they're consistently called
Starting point is 00:35:47 Yeah, but rules are also meant to be followed When it comes to fan conduct And when we say that we mean that at no point for any occasion ever should you ever go out onto the field during a baseball game can i also just say at no reason time ever should you be proposing at a professional sporting event that's my opinion and those two things come together in this next clip that we have uh that we're going to react to now to watch because apparently a fan got down the field it's not necessary it's so unnecessary it's so unnecessary it's so necessary
Starting point is 00:36:32 Did they need to do that, Sean? No. No, not at all. I'm going to counter argument, though. This is Los Angeles. This is a crazy, crazy place where crazy things happen. You kind of have to set an example on night one. It's opening day.
Starting point is 00:36:59 You can't have a bunch of gibronies running on the field proposing to their girlfriends every week. That's not going to be good for the pitch clock. That's not going to be good for time of game. So you kind of need to set the example early. I feel like that's what this was. This was a proverbial like, like leaving ahead on a on a steak kind of thing, right? Like don't ever try to come and run onto the field in Dodger Stadium. That's what I'm getting out of this.
Starting point is 00:37:24 Yeah, no. I mean, you can't, that can't be happening. Like you got like you said, you got to set an example. Here's my thing. How confident are you that you get down on one knee and think that you're not going to get leveled by security? Right. That's a different level of confidence. The problem is now is you can't even get a yes because you're going to jail.
Starting point is 00:37:43 Yeah. Like. And are you giving him a yes? Are you giving him a yes? No, I'm not. Let's let's talk about this. What kind of what what kind of like life are you going to have with this man? He obviously doesn't think things through.
Starting point is 00:37:57 Let's let's be fair. We are talking about Los Angeles Dodgers fans. This does seem on brand for them. All right. But yeah, no. I just think proposing at sporting events is a little cheesy. I just a little. Just a little bit.
Starting point is 00:38:10 Just a little bit. You know who hates proposing at sporting events? All of us. Every single person in the stadium. We all hate you. We're not rooting for you. And even if she said yes. Everyone wants her to say no.
Starting point is 00:38:22 We want her. We want you guys to break up. 100%. That's what we're hoping for. I think it's the truth. It's absolutely the truth. We are all rooting against you when you propose at a baseball game or any sporting event. I think Gurriel was was actually on the other side of that.
Starting point is 00:38:38 though. If you look at him, he looked very hopeful. Yeah, can we get a shot to that one more time? I want to see that shot one more time. Gurio was for it. And you can see down here, look it. He's like, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:48 He's like, oh, no. It's been ruined. Why did you do that? It's been ruined. He was such a nice man. He was just trying to find love. That's wild. That is wild.
Starting point is 00:39:00 And also, like, what happens if you're the woman being like, babe, I'm going to be right back. And you're like, where you're going? Are you going to the bathroom? Nah. You got to go get a hot. dog? Nah. You go give me another beer?
Starting point is 00:39:11 Nah. Just watch. This is going to be exciting. Hey, does anybody know where? Where did Steve go? Where did Steve go? Yeah, Steve's going to jail. Is that him?
Starting point is 00:39:22 That's where Steve's going to jail. You? Yeah. Anyway, don't do that. And don't do the wave either. Remember, it's going to tear your rotator cuff. But also, we thank you guys so much for being here on the PHS Sports YouTube channel. You guys, I call him the MVP.

Starting point is 00:43:09 All sorts of fun stuff happened around the league today on opening day. Some things we didn't expect, some things we did, right? One of the things that we definitely didn't expect was the Colorado Rockies coming out on top over the San Diego Padres. It's like Jesse said, it's just one game, right? I want to overreact. I know I shouldn't. But yeah, some wild stuff happened today. Adley Rushman for the Baltimore Orioles just absolutely went off today.
Starting point is 00:43:34 Dog. five for five with a bomb. Five for five with a bomb in the Orioles win over the Red Sox barely. They were up by quite a big there. They were up 10, 4, I believe, or maybe it was 9, 4. And then, yeah, the socks came back. And then they ultimately ended up losing in part because of a clock violation. Or I don't remember exactly the violation.
Starting point is 00:43:57 But it was one of the new rules screwing over Raphael Devers. Did not take long for that to happen. No, it did not. Oh, my God. I was, speaking of bombs, the bomb, bomb off the Grom, bomb going yard off. That's right. The Grom got rocked by the Phillies today. And they ultimately ended up winning still.
Starting point is 00:44:14 They did still win 11 to 7. So the Rangers had some potent offense there as well. It's just weird kind of looking at some of like some of these things around the league make a lot of sense. Braves beat up on the National 7 to 2. Yankees smoked the Giants for the first opening series. It's got to be so painful if you're a San Francisco Dodger fan to have. to have our San Francisco. Wow. San Francisco Giant fan.
Starting point is 00:44:37 He's been here for a long time. I have been here for a long time. I'm going to excuse him on that one. To have Aaron Judge go yard on his first at bat when you thought Aaron Judge was going to be a San Francisco giant. That one's got to just right in the soul. Do you think they could still call arson judge? Maybe.
Starting point is 00:44:51 I'm sure. I don't know. I'm sad that we're the only team that lost in the All City Division today. I don't know how to feel about that. Like that compounds the sadness because you know, misery loves company, right? Yeah. I'm not worried.
Starting point is 00:45:03 about the Rockies. I don't know if that's sustainable, beating the, the, the, the Padres in that fashion. 17 hits tonight for the Colorado Rockies. Did they lead like Snell in for the third time through the rotation? Is that what happened? I don't know. That's a great question. We were busy watching another game, but we were watching that score creep up and yeah, holy crap. The Cubs are better and the White Sox are solid. So those ones don't surprise me all that much. I mean, the White Sox beating the Astros. I think, of course, is surprising, but it was a great game and Dylan C pitched out of his mind. Um,
Starting point is 00:45:33 went four and a third, by the way, with three earned runs. So not a tear, I'm not hanging that one completely on him, even though the San Diego Padres only score two runs. But again, kind of a lack of offense. You can't, just like the Diamondbacks, you can't expect to really win a ball game two to one all the time. You definitely can't expect to win it on opening day, right? No, definitely not.
Starting point is 00:45:54 But the Diamondbacks, again, there's, you know, all is not lost. The Diamondbacks still have this four game series. And I think, like Jesse said, is probably the best kind of way to look at this. If the Diamondbacks can find a way to split the series to not get swept, it's not a necessity for them to win it. It's really a necessity for them to have a good show. Yeah. And I think... But today is not the...
Starting point is 00:46:18 This was not the showing that we were hoping to see. No, I think obviously you look... I mean, again, it's 1 of 62, but still, you look at around the league and you're like, okay, Rockies are 1 and 0. Everyone else the division of 1, you're an 0 and 1. But the way I look at it is, what? are all these other teams going to do against the Los Angeles Dodgers? It's probably going to be something pretty similar. Most of these teams are going to lose to Los Angeles Dodgers.
Starting point is 00:46:39 It just so happens to the deep acts are getting the Dodgers out of the way fast. Yeah. Like they do. They get eight, eight out of basically half of the game. Yeah. In the first week. In the first two weeks. We can a half.
Starting point is 00:46:48 Yeah. So it's crazy. And again, that's kind of why we talked about in the past about if they can come out of this month with a 500 record, that's actually pretty damn good. Even though in the grand scheme of things, I understand that people aren't going to be very excited about that.
Starting point is 00:47:01 If they can even be close to that. Same thing with this series. If they can get out of this, they play the Padres. Also pretty good. They got two games against the Padres. I don't know if you heard though, but they lost to the Rockies tonight.
Starting point is 00:47:12 They did. That is true. Who knows? Maybe they're terrible. Maybe they're terrible. But what's not terrible was some of the food out at Chase Field today, which we had a chance to sample. We really enjoyed.
Starting point is 00:47:25 The versus dogs are back, by the way. Back and better than ever, I would say. I would say they went extra far. Like the Cleveland Guardians, who lost today, they have a Cleveland Guardian's dog, a Guardians dog that has parogi. Parogi's on it. Surprisingly enough, not one of our favorite items because. More because it's just hard to eat. Parogis just don't belong on a hot dog.
Starting point is 00:47:47 Yeah. It's cute. You want to try it. It was the first thing we wanted to try. But Loki was not very good. No, I'm still going to go during that series. And I'm going to get it. I'm just going to eat the parogi separately.
Starting point is 00:47:59 Chris knows what's good because he's from my neck of the wood. and he knows how good parogis are. And like, they're bomb. They're amazing. But you got to take them off. He just brought this up at the same time while we were talking about. He did.
Starting point is 00:48:09 Let's go, Chris. You got to take them off and eat them separately because, again, they're really impractical to eat on a hot dog. Look, that is my best piece of advice to anybody about the churro dog.
Starting point is 00:48:18 Yeah. The churot dog. Eat the ingredients separately. The churot dog requires the churro to be separate from the dog. In fact, I found out that when you order it from the stand, you can just ask them
Starting point is 00:48:29 to not put the churro on it. And see, here's the thing. Chiro's hot, the ice cream is cold. You guys can do the math there. We don't need Jesse to help us out with that problem solving thing, right? Yeah. And churros are bad when they're cold. And ice cream is bad when it's hot. There's no reason those two things should live in the same bowl together, right? Yeah. Especially if you have a long walk back to your seat and then you plan on like chatting with people and maybe, you know, making a stop or two on your way there. Just not going to end well for you. I'm telling you that now. I will say every single item they had today. was just on paper fucking terrific. Yeah. Like it's just on paper so,
Starting point is 00:49:07 so good. But the nachos in every form and every variety that they had were incredible. There was not a nacho we had that wasn't good.
Starting point is 00:49:15 And the nachos, no structural integrity and I didn't even care. Yeah, and they all came in baseball helmets and I cared very much about that. That I cared very much about it. And we got many ones,
Starting point is 00:49:24 but some of the stuff that they were serving us like you get in big helmets. Like they have the bacon nachos, I think, or one of the things where you get in like the big helmets you used to get popcorn.
Starting point is 00:49:31 carnitas nachos fantastic the Bean Town dog I know I'm a former Sox fan No no bullshit that was incredible The Bean Town It had baked beans It had baked beans onions and bacon on top
Starting point is 00:49:44 What do you want? What more do you need? What could you ask for? But here's the thing I didn't even realize Until today that goddamn Bake Bean sauce if you will I don't know what else to call it right
Starting point is 00:49:54 The juice The juice the bean juice It makes such a good topping on a hot tub You don't need ketchup or mustard or shit else You have those baked beans on there baked beans and hot dogs were meant to go together. It's why there's a dish in the 80s. And we haven't even gotten to the best item yet.
Starting point is 00:50:10 Which was what? The bow bow, Bow, Bow, Krispy Chicken. Oh, my God, the Bao Bao Bao Krispy Chicken bun. It went so hard. It went so unnecessarily hard to pay. First of all, these are samples, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:22 They should all be much smaller than the Diamondbacks were generously giving to us. Yeah, we had to throw so much food away out. But the bow, it was a crispy chicken bow bun. and it itself was a full, like, that's what I would expect to get from the stand. Like, it was a gigantic piece of fried chicken on a bow bun. It was put in this, like, chili sauce. Oh, and the bow was soft and delicious and fresh. And the sauce was spicy.
Starting point is 00:50:47 The chicken was crispy. The sauce was spicy. There was nothing. It was perfection. It was perfection. And I'm so, like, I literally did a little dance while I was eating it based on the excitement of knowing that I get to eat that all season long. You know, when it's kind of like when a new restaurant moves.
Starting point is 00:51:01 in by your house and you're just like oh shit we get you know that fast food food place sorry max doesn't let me give out it was I will say there was one thing that did not hit what was that it was the loaded Greek fries the loaded Greek fries because I am so anti-olove olives are so divisive you could
Starting point is 00:51:17 offer me a million dollars but if it comes with an olive I'm saying now here's the thing he gave it an honest shot he really did I did I was like I'm not going to avoid these olives he was getting a little bit of feta cheese a little bit of the onion a little bit of the olive with the french fry not everything belongs on top of french fries we need to have that olives don't belong anywhere olives don't belong on shit but look i'm not gonna i'm not gonna
Starting point is 00:51:39 shame you for liking a greek salad no oh okay yeah if you like a greek salad and you seek out said greek salad because you enjoy olives that's fine olives are not a fucking thing where you can kind of get everybody on board with them by putting them on top of french fries that shit ain't happening it ain't happening now i would have to imagine you could probably order them without olives and if that's the case Then you got the pepperchinis, you know, you got the feta. I can get on board with that. But the aloes are going to ruin it for me every time.
Starting point is 00:52:09 The Diamondbacks chef, head chef is Stephen Tilder. Chef Steven Tilder. And this guy is a genius. I absolutely love this man. He one day showed me on a video I did for my previous employer. He let me make a Churot dog, by the way, which is why I'm an expert on Churotogs. But the one thing I was very excited about was that they're giving Chef Tilder his own Eurostand for euros and it's just so cool it's cool to see him getting his name on something because he has been a staple of the Diamondbacks and their entire their entire food operation that they have going on over there but you know again there was something today from Derek Hall that was very much Michael Jordan saying and and and I took that person I took that personally when it came to apparently some rankings that came out recently about ballparks around baseball and Chase Field.
Starting point is 00:52:59 was ranked very low. Now, what I will say is you can't get mad when you're not fixing your goddamn retractable rules. He said it was fair. It is fair, right? Which I didn't realize they're the fourth oldest park on baseball. In National League. Oh, in the National League.
Starting point is 00:53:14 Okay. Well, still, two of those are Wrigley Field and Dodger Stadium, which are both once over 100 and ones over 50 years old, 70 years old. I mean, it's just, it's wild, though, because now that seems to be the thing to just constantly update, find a new place, find a new stadium. And we're going to talk about that here in a minute, but it's going to be easier said than done for the areas on the Diamondbacks. But for sure, one thing you guys need to try out is our friends at OGs. We're getting tired around here.
Starting point is 00:53:39 A lot of us have been here very long today. And I'll tell you to get a good night's sleep. We all need some sleep addition gummies. The Aquaberry sleep edition gummies have a CBN, the THC ratio of two to one. The CBN helps you stay asleep. The THC gives you wonderful dreams while you're sleeping. And not to mention the fact that OGs is all about flavoring their edibles and all about flavoring life and they are absolutely delicious.
Starting point is 00:54:02 One of the biggest problems is you'll want more, but you won't need more. The sleep addition gummies are live and active now, plus tons more options, so many more options from our friends at OGGs. As always, you can check them out your local dispensary by checking out OGsbrands.com. Must be 21 or over to enjoy and enjoy responsibly.
Starting point is 00:54:19 And also speaking about enjoying responsibly, we are enjoying some Fort Beaks beers. We have all night long. We had our little beer counter. So shout out to OGs for keeping us hydrated and rational during the Arizona Diamondbacks game. Completely rational. Completely rational.
Starting point is 00:54:35 We did not overreact at any point, but make sure to check out the Four Peaks H Street Pub. We'll be there the last Wednesday of every month, but you can go there whenever you want. They have a wonderful events calendar that you can find at FourPeaks.com slash events for all your beer week entertainment needs, and they are having a huge NFL draft party on April 27th.
Starting point is 00:54:53 New coach, new GM, Cardinals have the third pick in the draft. So things are exciting. It's a big opportunity for the Airways. Arizona Cardinals, the best place to take in this pivotal moment and the rest of the NFL draft on April 27th is at the Four Peaks 8th Street Pub must be 21 years or older to enjoy and enjoy responsibly. Last thing we have to talk about was some of the discussion from Derek Hall today about Chasefield.
Starting point is 00:55:17 Again, we talked about him taking it a little personally. This is a man that really does take, you know, people's opinions about Chase Field to heart. He works very hard to make sure to provide the kind of, I guess you could say, like, fairy tale-like view that the original owners of this team set forth, which was that Chase Field was supposed to be a place that was affordable for families to go, enjoy time together, and watch this game of baseball. And Jerry Colangelo, God bless that man, knew that people weren't into that shit. They wanted to see a winner. But Derek Hall still does everything he can to provide a wonderful experience for fans. you know, they're still the lowest cost in baseball as far as ticket prices go or concession go.
Starting point is 00:56:02 It's just a matter of, you know, the Chase Field being considered to be kind of run down and old and not up to date anymore, which is a fair assessment of that airplane hanger that they plan. They haven't done much about renovating. But he did say today that the decision about where the Diamondbacks would play would be made in the next few months, meaning we should get an idea of what's going to happen in the future here by, by, I would assume by May, would be my assumption, right? So, but one thing that we kind of picked up on a little bit was they talked a lot about renovating Chase Field and what would be required to bring Chase Field up to what they see
Starting point is 00:56:43 as the standards that are being set around Major League Baseball. And it did sound a little bit like that could be the direction that they're leading. Yeah, yeah. I mean, at the very least, it sounds like they have plans, right? Like, they're, they're, they're, if, if the best option is to build a new stadium somewhere, they're going to do that. If the best option is to renovate, they're willing to do that. Like they're, it's not, I mean, again, I'm an ASU guy.
Starting point is 00:57:10 So I speak into like DFA, for example, where they're very like kind of back and forth about whether or not they want to put investment in it and like what the future is for that arena. Here, it seems like they're willing to, like, we're going to do what's best for this franchise and for the fans. And getting back to what you're talking about this being affordable. Like it's something I very much appreciate broke college kid for my first time
Starting point is 00:57:29 at first being here, still relatively broke, now employed kid. Like, I fell in love with this team because it was so easy to go to games. And I appreciated that is still a priority for this franchise.
Starting point is 00:57:40 And I appreciate that keeping a team here and making a good experience for fans is a priority for them. That's a key because he said that wherever they go, it will be in Maricopa County. So I know we've gotten some questions about that. I know there's still some people skeptical that if this whole deal doesn't work out at Chase Field,
Starting point is 00:57:57 that they could be flying off to Henderson, Nevada or some other place. And like, that's not going to happen. But some of the options that they have as far as moving aren't really great options either. We have talked extensively about how they want to move towards Salt River Fields and kind of be over by that facility. But one thing that we have kind of touched on is that that is on tribal land. and the Diamondbacks cannot have the taxes from sales at that facility go towards paying for it the same way if it is on Native American land. It's just the way that the tax situation works out. So that limits them to do like what the coyotes are trying to do in Tempe, where if they build that facility, all the taxes from the restaurants, hotels, bars, everything in that facility would go towards paying for it as far as the taxes go.
Starting point is 00:58:43 That way, the only taxes that they're infringing on are the taxes of people that choose to come to that facility and choose. to spend their money there. But, and they, the other discussion that's come up that we brought up is moving somewhere else downtown where they would like essentially, uh, you know, kind of knock down a block of,
Starting point is 00:59:02 of some of those, those factories or warehouses south of Chasefield and build a new stadium there. But how, how hard of a sell is that? Yeah. Right? Like the coyotes are already having a hard enough time selling taxpayers and people on it when they're telling them this is the,
Starting point is 00:59:16 it's going to be privately funded and then the tax revenue from, the facility is going to go towards paying for it. How are you going to get people on board with moving Chase Field just a fucking few miles south and over a little bit? 100%. Because anytime you have to build something new, like the room for like misinformation to start creeping into the minds of the public like you were clearly seeing in Tempe, like there's opponents of that arena that are just straight up lying to the public,
Starting point is 00:59:42 that's 100% going to happen here. It's crazy the way that's going. Because like the reality is whatever tax breaks or whatever the diamondbacks are getting right now, The people don't know. Like, they don't know what's going on, but all of that's going to come back to the forefront if they have to rebuild it. So I am of the, and I also don't think that Chase feels that bad.
Starting point is 00:59:58 Like, it obviously needs updates and renovations, but I still really like that stadium, personally. And so, and I just love the location of it. I would love to see them renovated. Well,
Starting point is 01:00:08 I talked to Derek Hall. We talked to Derek Hall today, and we asked them about the impact of the World Baseball Classic, the success of that on their decision. And I mean, he he didn't shy away from saying like man seeing that building that full uh is it it makes it very very much something that they want to do he also brought up the history that a lot of people a lot of fans have told them that this is the only baseball stadium they've known this is means so much
Starting point is 01:00:35 to them because of watching this team win this all the only major sports championship for the city in that building it's there's history there and that's something honestly that phoenix has a problem with history, having culture, having things that have existed because the city has been around for what feels like fucking 25 years, right? And I know this sounds ridiculous, but like, Wrigley Field has been there for 100 plus years. Dodger Stadium's been there for like 70 plus years. Like, sometimes stadiums just stick around, man. And like, you can build that history.
Starting point is 01:01:10 I know it's ridiculous to think of Chase Field in the same breath as, as. as those stadiums, but the reality is those stadiums weren't like, they're not modern. Like there was a time where they were in this very similar situation where it probably would have been in a lot of ways better to rebuild the new stadium. Yeah. But they stuck with it and then it became historic. Chasefield can become historic someday. Yeah, I agree.
Starting point is 01:01:31 Why not? Why not? AZ Sports Girl 224 in the chat asks, are they going to do roof renovation? The plan is, but the plan also, I think, is to not make any commitments to doing anything until they've made the decision on where they're going to play in the future. Which is just rational. If they're not going to play at Chase Field, they're not going to fix that roof. That's the way that I imagine that playing out. I could be absolutely wrong, and I'm just speculating on that.
Starting point is 01:01:56 But it sounds like they want to do a major renovation all at once, including fixing the roof. It sounds like they want to, if they're going to take out seats and make a party deck area or change some of the things that they're talking about, he spoke about needing a new PA system. He talked about needing new lights. That's obviously, especially with what we saw the night. We want to fuck with the Dodgers the same way. They want to blast red and turquoise lights in there. We want to get that going.
Starting point is 01:02:20 Yeah, for sure. So, but I mean, I think the thing is like selfishly, I love Chase Field myself. I have a lot of great memories there. I mean, my, my wife and I dated in our bosses season seats behind home plate up in section 300. Like that's special to me. You know what I mean? I'm a lifelong baseball fan. Today was the first time I'd ever step foot in.
Starting point is 01:02:42 a major league baseball stadium or on a baseball field and the first time i'd ever been in a major league clubhouse that happened at chase field that's never going to change for me this guy memory is never going to lose the best day today it was opening day like it's it's kind of got ruined here a little bit with this game but this morning he was on cloud not it was chase field is now for i mean it already did but for it's now forever going to have a special place in my art and i would hate to see it gone and even today man they had the roof open when we were out there for this event and it's just it's just beautiful it's just beautiful like it's not Chase Fields fault that the weather sucks here it's not Chase Fields fault that it's 150 degrees in fucking June right and it's kind of like something that Derek Hall brought up to
Starting point is 01:03:19 that I think of a lot is that like there's a water park up by me and the water park the company that used to run it was from Hawaii and like it's almost like they did not know what they were getting into when they opened a water park in Arizona because this shit ain't like Hawaii this desert sun is going to beat down on your on your water park everything's going to get faded everything fast like you gotta keep up on that right and it's kind of the same thing with chase field being out in the sun things fast things fade fast uh things get dirty they get dusty there's there's a great amount of upkeep that's that's necessary there but one thing i've always said about chase field is it's kind of like when someone covets their like neighbor's backyard only because their neighbor puts work into it to keep it nice right like covering covering your neighbor's garden or whatever when you don't even do shit to make your garden nice right yeah like good Chase Field needs to be up kept. It needs, it needs, it definitely needs some renovations. I still fall back on the fact that I never imagined footprint center being as pretty and
Starting point is 01:04:17 as welcoming as it is due to some renovations. I've been in that building since it was the America West Arena. And I never imagine that they could change it to be the experience that it is now. And I mean, I just went to a couple events there over the last two weeks and every single one of them was enjoyable. And at no point did that facility that's older than Chase Field. ever look like it was, you know, run down or or old or antiquated. It's just a matter of staying ahead of things and updating and things like that.
Starting point is 01:04:47 Azy Sports Girl asks, what park are you near? It was previously wet and wild. Now it is Hurricane Harbor. It's owned by six flags now. That's kind of my area of town.
