Circumcision at Gilgal 5. Now, when all of the Amarites, Amurites, kings west of the Jordan and all the canaanites kings along the coast heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until we had crossed over.
Starting point is 00:00:46 Their hearts melted and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites. At that time the Lord said to Joshua, make flint knives and circumcised the Israelites. again. So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gabbath, Gabbath, Haralath. Now this is why he did so. All the, of those who came out of Egypt, all the men of the military age died in the desert on the way to, on the way after leaving Egypt, all the people that, came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the desert during the journey from Egypt had not. The Israelites had moved about in the desert 40 years until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died. Since they had not obeyed the Lord, for the Lord had sworn to them. that they would not see the land that he had solemnly promised their fathers to give us a land flowing with milk and honey.
Starting point is 00:02:12 So he raised up their sons in their place. And these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircised because they had not been circumcised on the way. And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained. where they were encamped until they were healed. Then the Lord said to Joshua, today I've rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you. So the place had been called Golgau to this day.
Starting point is 00:02:50 On the evening of the 14th day of the month, while camped at Gilgall on the plains of Jericho, there's the lights. celebrated the Passover. The day after the Passover that very day, they ate some of the produce out of the land. And leaving bread and
Starting point is 00:03:10 roasted grain, the mana stopped the day after they ate this food from the land. There was no longer any mana for the Israelites, but that year they ate of the produce of cannon.
Starting point is 00:03:26 The fall of Jericho. Now when Joshua was near Jericho. He looked up in Solomon standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, Are you for us or for our enemies? Neither, he replied.
Starting point is 00:03:47 But as commander of the army of the Lord have now come. Then Joshua fell face down to the ground, in reverence and asked him, What message does my Lord have for his servant? The commander of the Lord's army replied, Take off your sandals for the place where you are standing is holy, and Joshua did so. Six.
Starting point is 00:04:17 Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in. Then the Lord said to Joshua, see I've delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams, horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times.
Starting point is 00:04:53 With the priests blow in the trumpets, when you hear them, sound a long blast on the trumpets have all the people give a loud shout then the wall of the sea will collapse and the people will go up every man straight in so joshua's son of none called the priests and said to them take up the ark of the covenant of the lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it people advance march around the city with the armed guard going ahead of the ark of the lord when joshua had spoken to the people seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the lord went forward blowing their trumpets and the ark of the lord's covenant followed them the armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets And the rearguard followed the ark.
Starting point is 00:06:01 At this time, the trumpets were sounding, but Joshua had commanded the people. Do not give a war cry. Do not raise your voices. Do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout. Then shout. So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city,
Starting point is 00:06:24 circling it once. Then the people returned. turned to camp and spent the night day. Joshua got up early the next morning and took the priests, the next morning and the priest took up the ark of the Lord. The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them, and the rearguard followed the ark of the Lord.
Starting point is 00:06:55 while the trumpets kept sounding so on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp they did this for six days on the seventh day they got up that day day break and marched around the
Starting point is 00:07:13 city seven times in the same manner except on that day they circled the city seven times the seventh time around when the priest's the trumpet blasts. Joshua commanded the people. Shout, for the Lord has given you the city. The city and all that is in it are to be devoted to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute
Starting point is 00:07:44 and all who are with her in her house shall be spared because she hid the spies we sent, but keep away from the devoted things so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise, you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it. All the silver and gold in the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury. when the trumpets sounded the people shouted And at the sound of the trumpet When the people gave a loud shout The wall collapsed
Starting point is 00:08:30 So every man charged straight in And they took the city They devoted the city to the Lord And destroyed with the sword Every living thing in it Men and women Young and old cattle Sheep and donkeys
Starting point is 00:08:50 to the two men who had spied out the land. Go into the prostitute's house and bring her out in all who belonged to her in accordance with your oath to her. So the young men who had done the spy went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother and brothers and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel. Then they burn the whole city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold in the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the Lord's house. But Joshua spared Rahab, the prostitute with her family and all who belonged to her,
Starting point is 00:09:41 because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho, and she lives among the Israel. Israelites to this day. At that time, Joshua pronounced this solemn oath, cursed before the Lord is the man who undertakes to rebuild the city Jericho. At the cost of his first-born son, will he lay its foundations. At the cost of his youngest, he set up its gates. So the Lord was with Joshua in his famed, famous bread throughout the land. Achan, sin, seven. That's where we're going to stop and pick back up.
Starting point is 00:10:31 Pick back up at Achanan, Seven. Life in Bible Times. Jericho's wall, Jericho was not a huge city, but it sat high up on a mound. Its walls were high and thick, so thick that people built their homes in them. See Joshua 215, page 238, exclamation mark. The Israelites soldiers probably looked at Jericho and wondered how they would ever be able to scramble up that hill and then go over such huge walls, but God had an answer for the high walls of Jericho. You can read about it in Joshua 6.
