Welcome to positivity successor episode 208.
Today's guest with me is Unchamed.
How you guys doing?
This is Unchained
In 2017
I broke the state record in Illinois
For power lifting bench press
I'm happy to be here today
With James to talk to you about the
MMA journey
That we had
After I broke the state record for power lifting
Mm-hmm
So the
The story started from when one got the first call about the fight, started to become a coach with our
Jeff, help Michael train and prepare as much as we can to get his first undefeated win at the Aragon ballroom on March 30th, 2019.
Yeah, you know, it was a pretty wild fight and a wild experience.
It was my first
MMA fight
and Kevin Serber
the guy that I fought he had
16 amateur fights under
his belt and I went in there
first fight
no experience
the day of the way ends
the
Illinois Athletic State Commission
they warned me
that, you know, it wasn't wise to fight Kevin Serber due to his experience.
But me and Fire Laser and my buddy Jeff, we took on the challenge anyway,
and we didn't let that put us down.
We went into that thing full force.
So the March 29th, 2019, 2019.
was the day of the way in and we went to the gas station nugget of a few up boosting drinks and then um
it was at amco that then we went straight downtown to to to chicago to chicago to go to the
It's called sluggers.
Yeah, the, uh, that was, uh, that was for sure a wild night at the bar, uh, during the way, uh,
way-ins, um, you know, Kevin Serber, me and him, we did face off.
And, uh, when me and Kevin Serber, when we were facing off, I ended up headbutting Kevin
server during the face-off just to get into his head and fire laser if and jeff were right there
witnessing it all it was just uh it was it was a great it was a great fun night um you know our
game plan walking in was just to get into his head intimidate him you know obviously the guy
had 16 fights under his belt so you know we had to go in there with
you know, the mind games to just intimidate them and, you know, try to bring his spirit down and
just to try to get that edge over him to see if we could break them.
And the waitress was offering everybody, Jeff, drinks?
Yeah, yeah.
So my buddy Jeff, he's a driver at UPS.
And my two coaches that day were Jeff and James.
So yeah, the waitress tried to go up to Jeff and give him, you know, an alcoholic beverage.
and Jeff said to her, oh, sorry, I don't drink poison.
And I ordered a K cocktail.
And when I went into the bar with them, I had my sunglasses on.
And then I just got to,
go through to get access to the way.
Like,
I would,
I was, it was, it was amazing.
So,
March 30th,
2019,
the fight at the Argonne Bowler.
Yeah, you guys have to,
you guys have to remember, like,
you know,
fire laser,
you were in high,
school at the time right yeah so you know most fighters they would go to a gym and they would get a coach
that trains people every day and stuff like that and i didn't want to go that route i wanted to
take my buddy here fire laser with me and have him be my coach on that day because i felt like
like that was the coolest thing to do.
Like even if the odds were in my favor,
I didn't want to go in there with a random coach,
you know, that I didn't know.
I wanted people that I knew by my side represented me
because I knew these people.
I knew Fire Laser and Jeff.
They were going to bring me the best energy
where it would just give my spirit that boost.
allow me to have that edge.
So, you know, I completely went the unorthodox, like, route, you know, for the Kevin Serber fight.
But, you know, we didn't let that, we didn't let that bring us down.
We allowed that to just give us better energy for the fight.
and I'm happy that, you know, we ended up doing things the way we did it because, you know, my buddy right here, Fire Laser,
he's an undefeated MMA coach now, and he's not just an undefeated MMA coach.
He ended up coaching his fighter against the guy with 16 amateur fights while his fighter had
Zero fights under his belt, and he led me to victory.
So, James, I want to tell you, bro.
Thanks, dude.
You're welcome.
Hell yeah.
And I was in between the rounds.
I was giving water to, to un-chained,
to stay hydrated throughout his match against Kevin.
server yeah uh kevin server lost uh second round t ko uh and we got them we finished um a few seconds
before the final buzzer and uh it was i don't know it was probably the most epic experience
that i've ever had in my life you know being
he'd able to have Fire Laser and Jeff in my corner, you know, for my first fight against
an experienced season opponent, Kevin Serber.
And I mean, Kevin Serber, he wasn't a small guy.
Kevin Serber, he was like, what, 6-2?
And I'm, you know, I'm 5'10.
And, you know, like, we went into that fight.
And Kevin Serber, he had, he had all the odds.
in his favor.
You know, but
you know, the energy that we brought
to that fight, team unchained,
you know, it was just too great and too powerful
for Kevin Serber to even
comprehend or overcome.
Like, you know,
TKO second round.
A few seconds before the buzzer, like,
that was awesome.
And
before going,
out to that fight um the the the staff member for for for for for preparing the the fight in the
whole venue and stuff was a trying to prep get give a unchained a a cup to use
yeah so so so we didn't know that we needed a cup
to fight and we ended up going downtown Chicago from Naperville, you know, to the Aragon
ballroom and we didn't have a cup and I didn't even know I needed a cup to fight.
But the room that they put us in right before the fight was on the third floor all the way
in the corner of the building at Aragon Ballroom.
And at Aragon ballroom, this is where they.
do like concerts for
Tiesto, David Geta, Deadmouse,
stuff like that. So it's a pretty big
place. So
you know, we were
in the corner on the third floor of the
Aragon ballroom.
You know, they
call my name and, you know,
they tell us that we're about to
fight. So
we go all away from the corner of
the Aragon ballroom
and go all the way down the stairs
to the center, you know, where the
stages at and they called me and kevin server out i get to the cage and the refs you know he's like
do you have a cup i'm like no i don't have a cup and the uh you know they had to have like a pause
in the event because i didn't have a cup and you know they were laughing and stuff like that and
uh you know they were also upset that you know i don't
didn't have a cup. So I went all the way back by the stage, all the way to the corner of the
building, went all the way up the stairs to the third floor. I managed to get a cup. And I had to go
all away from the third floor again, back to the center of the Aragon ballroom just to fight
Kevin Serber. So, you know, by the time I started fighting Kevin Serber,
I already basically did like two rounds of MMA.
So I didn't even go into that fight against Kevin Serber.
Yeah, I didn't even go in.
Like when I fought Kevin Serber, I wasn't 100%.
I was already gassed out just from having to go back up to the third floor to get a cup.
You know, and then I had to put the cup on and change and go all the way back down
to the center of the Aragon ballroom to fight them.
So I wasn't at 100% when I fought Kevin Serber.
I truly did feel like I could have done more and I could have finished them sooner.
But, you know, things happen, especially when you're in a situation that's new.
But at the end of the day, it's all about adapting and overcoming obstacles that are in your way.
and, you know, making the best of the situation.
And that's what we did.
We didn't let that bring us down.
We still went in there.
We fought our hearts out.
And, you know, we got the job done.
Yep.
And thank you for coming on the podcast.
Hey, dude.
I love you, bro.
