I've been with you for 20 years now. Your sheep and goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from your flocks. I had not bring you animals torn by wild beasts. I bore the loss myself.
Starting point is 00:00:39 You demand payment from me for whatever was stolen by day or night. This was my situation. He consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night and sleep fled from my eyes. It was like this for the 20 years I was in your household. I worked for you 14 years for your two daughters. and six years for your flocks. You changed my wages ten times. If the God of my father,
Starting point is 00:01:09 the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac had not been with me, you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and toil my hands. And last night he rebuked you. Boban answered Jacob, the women are my daughters, the children are my children,
Starting point is 00:01:31 and the flocks are my flocks. all you see is mine, yet what can I do today about these daughters and mine, or about the children they have born? Come now, let's make a covenant. You and die, and let it serve as a witness between us. So Jacob took a stone and said, Hope has a pillar. He said to his relatives, Gather some stones, so they took stones and piled them into a heap in the heap.
Starting point is 00:02:02 and they ate there by the heap. Abam called it Jagger Saddutha, and Jacob called it Gawid. Life in Bible Times, Jacob's tents. The tents, Jacob as well as Isaac and Abraham lived in, were made of dark cloth or animal skins. These men and their families lived in tents because they traveled back and forth across the countryside.
Starting point is 00:02:39 The tents were easy to take down and load onto a pack animal. Then when the people stopped again, they could easily unload the tent, set up, and fuel at home. Oban said, this heap is a witness between you and me today. This is why it was called Galid. It was also called Miss Pa, because he said, May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other. If you mistreat my daughters or if you take any wives beside my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness between you and me.
Starting point is 00:03:25 Abon also said to Jacob, here is a heap. Here is this heap and here is this pillar I have set up between you and me. This heap is a witness. and this pillar is a witness, that I will not go past a seat to your side to harm you, and that you will not go past the seat and pillar to my side to harm me. May the God of Abraham and the God of Nehour, the God of their father judged between us.
Starting point is 00:03:56 So Jacob took an oath in the name of the fear of his father, and the fear of his father, Isaac. He offered a sacrifice. there in the Hill County, he invited his relatives to a meal. After they have eaten, he spent the night there. Early the next morning, Lebon kissed his grandchildren and his daughters and blessed him. Then he left and returned home. Jacob prepares to meet Isalu. 32. Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him. When Jacob saw them, He said, this is the camp of God, so he named that place.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Mahanah, him. Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother, Ishaul, in the land of Syria. The country of Edom, he instructed them, This is what you were to say to my master, Ishaul. Your servant, Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban and have remained there till now. I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, men's servants, and maid servants. Now I am sending this message to my Lord, that I may find favoring your eyes.
Starting point is 00:05:23 When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, We went to your brother Isahu, and now he is coming to meet you. And 400 men are with them. In great fear and distress, Jacob invited. the divide the people who were with them into two groups, and the flocks and herds and camels as well. He thought, if Isahu comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape, then Jigab prayed,
Starting point is 00:05:56 Oh, God of my father Abraham, God of my father, Isaac, O Lord, who said to me, go back to your country and your relatives, tips, I will make you prosper. I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness. You have shown your servant. I have only my staff when I cross this Jordan, but now have become two groups. Save me, I pray from the hand of my brother Issao, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children. But you have said, I will surely make you prosper and will. make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted. He spent the night there, and from what he had with him, he selected a gift for his brother,
Starting point is 00:06:50 he saw 200 female goats and 20 male goats, 200 iwees and 20 rams, 30 female camels with their young, 40 cows, and 10 bulls. and 20 female donkeys and 10 male donkeys. He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself and said to his servants, Go ahead of me and keep some space between the herds. He instructed the one in the lead. When my brother, Osu, meets you, and asks,
Starting point is 00:07:28 To whom do you belong and where are you going? And who owns all these animals in front of you? then you are to say they belong to your servant Jacob. There are gifts sent to my Lord Isowal and he is coming behind us. He also instructed
Starting point is 00:07:46 the second, the third, and all the others who followed the herds. You are to say the same thing to Yis Alu when you meet him. And be sure to say, your servant Jacob is coming behind us
Starting point is 00:08:01 for he he thought I'll pacify him with these gifts I'm sending on ahead later when I see him perhaps he will receive me
Starting point is 00:08:14 so Jacob's gifts went on ahead of him but he himself spent the night in the camp Jacob wrestles with God that night Jacob got got up and took his two wives
Starting point is 00:08:31 his two mates' servants and his 11 sons and crossed the ford of the Jabok. After he had sent them across his stream, he sent over all his possessions. So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip,
Starting point is 00:09:01 so that his hip was wrenched. as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said, Let me go for his daybreak. But Jacob replied, I will not let you go until you bless me, unless you bless me. The man asked him,
Starting point is 00:09:20 What is your name? Jacob, he answered. Then the man said, your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because he have struggled with God and with men, and have overcome.
Starting point is 00:09:38 Jacob said, please tell me your name, but he replied, why do you ask my name? Then he blessed him there. So Jacob called the place, Penault, saying, it was because I saw God face to face,
Starting point is 00:09:55 and yet my life was spared. The sun rose above him as he passed Penault, and he was limping because of his hip. Therefore, to this day, that Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob's hip was touched near the tendon. All right, let's live it.
