Joseph's Dreams, 37. Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of canon. This is the account of Jacob. Joseph, a young man of 17, was tending the flocks with his brothers,
Starting point is 00:00:41 the sons of Belha and the sons of Zopa, his father's wives, and he brought their father a bad rapport about them. Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other, than any of his other sons, because he had been born. him in his old age and he made a richly ornamented robe for him when he hit when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them they hated him and could not speak to a speak a kind word to him joseph had a dream and when he told it to his brothers they hated him all the more he said to them listen to this dream i had
Starting point is 00:01:31 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it. His brothers said to him, do you intend to rain over us? Will you actually rule us? And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said. then he had another dream and he told it to his brothers listen he said i had another dream and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing it down to me when he told his father as well as his brothers his father rebuked him and said what is this dream you had well your mother and i and your brothers actually come and bowed down to the ground before you. His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Joseph sold by his brothers. Now his brothers had gone to graze their father's flocks near Shicham. And Israel said to Joseph, as you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near the Shicham. Come, I am going to send you to them. Very well, he replied. So he said to him, Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flags, and bring word back to me. Then he sent him off from the valley of Hebron.
Starting point is 00:03:20 When Joseph arrived at Chichem, a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, What are you looking for? He replied, I'm looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are great? their flocks. They have moved on from here, the man answered.
Starting point is 00:03:40 I heard them say, let's go to Dothan. So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached him, they plied to kill him. Here comes that dreamer, they said to each other. Come now. Let's kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns. And I say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we'll see what comes of his dreams. When Ruben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands.
Starting point is 00:04:29 Family favoritism. Let's live it. Genesis 37, 1 through 11. Read Genesis. 37.1 through 11. Jacob showed that he loved his son Joseph the most by giving him a beautiful coat. The story says that Joseph's brothers hated him. Joseph didn't help the situation by being proud about his dream.
Starting point is 00:04:55 Do you ever feel like your parents love one of your brothers or sisters more than they love you? Ask your parents if they ever felt that way when they were young. Read this Bible story about some time, allowed sometime, and have your family talk about how Joseph and his father could have helped the family feel closer and happier. Let's not take his life, he said. Don't shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the desert, but don't lay a hand on him. Ruben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father. So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe.
Starting point is 00:05:50 The richly ornamented robe he was wearing, and they took him and threw him into the cistern. Now the cistern was empty. There was no water in it. As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan. of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myr, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt. Trila said to his brothers,
Starting point is 00:06:27 what will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? Come, let's sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him. After all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood. His brothers agreed. So when the Medianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for 20 shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him in Egypt.
Starting point is 00:07:00 When Rubin returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes. He went back to his brothers and said, The boy is in here. Where can I turn now? Then they got Joseph's rule, slaughtered a goat, and dipped the robe in the blood. They took the ornamented robe back to their father and said,
Starting point is 00:07:29 We found this. Examined it to see whether it's your son's robe. He recognized it and said, it is my son's robe. Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces. Then Jacob tore his clothes and put on sack cloth and mourned for his son many days.
Starting point is 00:07:58 All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. No, he said. In the morning will I go down to the grave to my son, so his father wept for him. Meanwhile, the many of the men, I sold Joseph in Egypt to Potipar, one of the pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard. Why is Joseph important? 3736. Joseph is important because this young son, Jacob saved his family from famine and brought the Israelites to Egypt to live.
Starting point is 00:08:50 Joseph was not treated fairly by his brothers or by others, but God helped him to become the second most powerful person in Egypt, which at that time was a great country. Life in Bible Times. Joseph's Roeb. People in Bible times liked beautiful clothes. Beautiful clothes. They made their clothes out of black or white cloth,
Starting point is 00:09:20 as well as from cloth of brighter colors like purple, red, blue, and yellow. Joseph's robe was probably embroidered, brood. by working colored threads into patterns in the cloth. The cloth itself could be woven with patterns too. This robe was not only a beautiful gift that Jacob gave Joseph, it probably showed his position in the family as well, placing Joseph ahead of his older brothers. This picture shows,
Starting point is 00:10:06 ornamented clothes worn by Egyptians in Joseph's time. Joseph's robe probably looked something like this. So this is where we're going to stop.
