I'm your host, Bushy Martin,
and each week I go deep with the best investors, experts, leaders and founders to find out what
it takes to break free from the grind, discover freedom and to live by design. Subscribe now and
join me and get invested in the life that you really want. Let's get started. Hi Friend Fighters,
are you relying on motivation to build your investment success? Are you waiting for the
right time the right market the right mood before you take your next step or are you training
yourself to act even when every bone in your body and every instinct says stop because here's the
hard truth my friend when it comes to achieving lasting financial freedom through property
investing motivations a myth success doesn't show up for the most talented the most inspired
or even the most well-resourced, it shows up for those who are relentlessly consistent,
even, especially, when they don't feel like it.
Following on from Eddie the Frenchman on the Run's awesome inspiration in last week's episode,
today we're diving into a powerful truth backed by neuroscience, reinforced by real-life investing
results, and forged in the fire of discomfort. Supported by scientific facts that I've drawn
from Dr. Andrew Huberman, and in the spirit of my strong belief that sustainable success
lies at the intersection of the three L's, of self, health, and wealth, where self is
capturing your mindset, health enshrines your habits, which combine to allow you to achieve
your version of wealth. We're going to unpack why motivation is overrated, why your nervous
system doesn't care about your goals, but it absolutely responds to your actions.
And most importantly, we'll explore how building the habit of forced consistency is the one superpower that separates those who dabble in property from those who achieve genuine passive income for life.
Now, if your eyes are already glazing over or your ears are shutting down because you're just not interested in all of this mindset nonsense and you're just after hot property tips, tricks and tactics, then you're the one who actually needs to listen to this episode the most.
because if you action what I'm about to share,
it will absolutely transform your investing and your life.
So listen up or ignore my message at your peril.
Now, exploring why most investors fail, let me start with a story.
Years ago, I sat down with a high-income earner, let's call him Dave.
He earned north of $300,000 a year.
He was smart, analytical, and a spreadsheet samurai.
He'd read all the books, attended every seminar,
and had plans for a 10-property portfolio in a decade.
Fast forward five years, and he still hadn't secured a single property.
Why?
He was always waiting for the right time, waiting for motivation,
waiting for certainty, waiting for the dopamine hit of excitement
to match his spreadsheet goals.
But here's what neuroscience now confirms.
Motivation is a neurochemical illusion.
It rises with novelty and fades whenever it becomes routine.
When dopamine drops, so does your drive.
And if you're relying on it to move,
you'll stop at the very moment that you need to push the hardest.
You see, your brain doesn't change because you wish it to.
It doesn't care about your goals.
It doesn't wake you up at the vision board.
It rewires based on what you do repeatedly, consistently.
We're talking about patterns, repetition, behaviour.
Because your nervous system is shaped by action, not intention, not emotion, but action.
Do you want to know how elite performers get ahead?
they build a relationship with boredom with fatigue with discomfort they don't run from
the hard days they anticipate them because they understand the brain's plasticity window
the idea that what you do when it's hardest is what actually gets carved deepest into your
neural architecture so what i mean by this it means that you need to force yourself force
yourself to be consistent. Not once, not twice, but every single time. And here's what most people
miss. Forcing yourself doesn't make you rigid. It makes you resilient. It doesn't limit your
freedom. It builds it. Because if you can do the hard thing when it doesn't feel good,
when no one's clapping, when everything in your biology says stop, then you become
untouchable. You become unbreakable. Your goals don't care how you feel. Your neurochemistry
doesn't care about your excuses. You either show up or you don't. And when you do it over and over
and over without permission from your emotions, you begin to change neurobiologically,
psychologically and physically. You become the kind of person who finishes what they start.
So stop waiting for a perfect condition, stop hoping it's going to get easier, force it again and again and again because consistency under duress is where real transformation lives and your brain is listening every single time.
Many of us are still chasing motivation like it's a resource that we can summon on demand.
Like if you just read the right quote, you listen to the right podcast or you feel the right burst of energy.
You suddenly become unstoppable, apparently.
But here's what neuroscience actually tells us, and it's critical.
Motivation is unreliable.
It's what Hugh Cubanman describes as neuromodular dependent,
which means it fluctuates based on internal states.
Our sleep, nutrition, social connection, hormonal cycles, and external cues.
That means it's volatile.
it's not something that you can build a high performing life on what is reliable what actually
reshapes the neural circuitry of your brain is consistency specifically forced consistency
that means showing up and doing the thing even when motivation is at zero because here's the
biology every time you act without the chemical incentive without dopamine pushing you you're
training your prefrontal cortex to take control.
That's executive function.
That's top-down regulation.
That's what separates people who wish from people who execute.
And the beauty of this is that over time,
this act of forcing consistency creates its own feedback loop.
You show up even when you don't want to,
and eventually your brain starts to anticipate the reward,
not from the result, but from the process.
You become chemically reinforced by the habit of discipline itself.
That's when the nervous system really starts to shift.
That's when it's no longer about whether you feel like it, it's about who you are.
Your brain doesn't change just because you want it to.
It changes when you give it evidence, repeatedly.
The nervous system is governed by principles of adaptation, and it's incredibly efficient.
it doesn't remodel itself based on potential it rewires itself based on patterns on what you do
again and again and again now every single behavior you repeat sends a signal through a
neural pathway and with each repetition that signal gets stronger faster and more automatic
it's what huberman calls long-term potentiation each time you act you strengthen a neural pathway
The more often you repeat a behaviour, especially under stress or discomfort, the more automatic it becomes.
Think of it this way, you don't build resilience by reading about it, you build it when you do the hard thing over and over until it becomes your default setting.
For property investors, this looks a bit like turning up to research deals when the media is actually screaming doom.
sticking to your strategy when others panic saving your surplus even when friends are splashing cash
and making your monthly contributions to buffers and offsets by brushing your teeth non-negotiable
because it's all about neuroplasticity not intention let me share a quick analogy picture
two investors investor a follows through only when he feels like it investor b shows up every day
rain, hail or shine. Investor A is driven by emotion. Investor B is driven by identity.
And who wins in the long run? Investor B every time. Because she's not waiting for the stars
to align. She becomes the type of person who acts. This is the power of forced consistency.
Even when it feels like nothing's actually happening, even when you're grinding with
no visible result, you're casting votes for your future self. You're becoming someone that your
nervous system recognizes as, I'm a finisher. I do what I said I'd do, no matter what. Now,
that's not woo-woo, that's biology. It's the compound effect of consistency in action.
Now, let's get honest. Sustainable success in property investing just isn't sexy. It's like
watching grass grow. It's not flashy and it's not fast. It's boring, uninspiring routine.
But that's exactly where the magic happens. When you feel like nothing's actually working,
when it's repetitive, hard or slow, your brain is entering what neuroscientists call a plasticity
window. That's when your nervous system is most receptive to change. So when you stay the course
through that grind, you're actually building mental calluses. And just like an elite athlete
trains their body to perform under pain, just like Eddie the Frenchman on the run demonstrated
last week, you're training your brain to execute under pressure. That's what separates investors
who thrive long-term from those who burn out after one hot cycle. They get comfortable being
very uncomfortable. So you need to reframe resistance as a signal. I want you to remember
this. Discomfort's not a sign to stop. It's a signal to go deeper. When you hit the wall,
whether it's fatigue, boredom, fear, or doubt, that's not failure. That's your cue. That's your
brain saying, I'm paying attention. This matters. Let's lock it in. So do you want to be a high
performance investor and join the ranks of the 5% who live their ideal lifestyle by achieving
their version of sustainable success? Then train your nervous system to interpret stress not as a
threat, but as a signpost of growth. That's how you develop friction tolerance, which is the holy
grail of sustainable success. Now, let's bring this home to your property portfolio. How do you
trained consistency as an investor? Well, firstly, you systemize your strategy. Start with the end
in mind, remove emotion, follow a repeatable process through the triad of surplus structure
and strategy always. Secondly, set non-negotiables like reviewing markets, like the daily habits of
Reading, saving and securing property every time you can, which all of this needs to be identity-based, not motivation-based.
Thirdly, track behaviour, not outcomes.
Focus on what you can control, your inputs, your effort, your execution.
And lastly, normalise discomfort.
Expect delays, downturns, even mistakes.
That's not a detour, it's actually the pathway to prosperity.
now let's jump into our normal ambush bushfire lightning round with some rapid fire bushfire
takeaways and i'll do it in the normal question format what's the number one mindset for long-term
success decide commit repeat and what's the most powerful investment habit daily action
not daily excitement what do you say to someone waiting to feel ready start before you're ready
because the doing creates the feeling.
And lastly, what's the best investing quote that you need to live by?
Jim Rohn once said,
Motivation gets you going, habit keeps you growing.
Now, as I concluded last week,
to go the distance, you've got to fall in love with the grind.
Be willing to do what others won't
and stay the course when others fall away.
In property, in endurance, in life,
it's not the fastest who wins,
it's the one who starts regardless and who refuses to stop now many of you will have heard all of
this before but what have you done about it so take some action right now that will get you
started on the road to your version of relentless consistency by clicking the link in the show notes
now to frenchmanontherun.com where eddie's preparing his daily exercise for his mammoth
across the country run of 3,900 kilometers covering about 112 kilometers a day for 34 days
straight. Now that's the equivalent of two and a half marathons a day for over a month.
Now his mission is to push his physical and mental limits to new levels in order to raise funds and
awareness for Red Kite who support kids with cancer and their families. So make sure you also
make a donation to this life-changing cause and use it as the milestone beginning of your journey
to force consistency by clicking the link in the show notes to his website and then share his
awesome endeavor with friends and family so they can then spread the word and get motivated to move
mountains one consistent non-negotiable step at a time and to keep your newfound habit of
consistency moving click the link in the show notes to join us on the property hub collective
Facebook community where we can help each other to reach our lifestyle goals through property
and you guessed it, consistently. And if you'd like some personal support to help you overcome
any of your very specific property obstacles, feel free to book in with me for a personal
solution session. I'll say that again, for a personal solution session by clicking on the
show note links. And I look forward to spending some dedicated one-on-one time with you soon.
in closing here's your challenge this week don't wait for motivation don't seek permission don't
chase or wait for perfect conditions force yourself to be consistent even when it's hard
especially when it's hard because every time you show up you're sculpting a stronger investor
one decision at a time one habit at a time one identity at a time and that my friend
is how you get invested for life.
I'll leave you with this gem from James Clear.
You don't rise to the level of your goals.
You fall to the level of your systems.
So build systems consistently.
Show up consistently.
Take action consistently.
And stay the course.
Yes, you guessed it, consistently.
And as always, live by design, not by default.
Until next time, get invested, stay consistent and keep climbing.
I'll see you next time.
