The interruption, but I'm Mike Wilbon. Tony, and a highway robbery, thieves reportedly stole 24,000 bottles of Guy Fierry's tequila. And Tony Kornheiser, shh.
Starting point is 00:00:44 What are you talking about this? I told you to lay low. Yeah, but I know it's too good. Got to talk about it. I met Guy Fierry on an elevator once. Really? Yeah, not too long ago. Did he know who you were?
Starting point is 00:00:53 I don't want to brag. But he knew who you were. Yeah. Did you know who he was? Of course. No, you did not. No, you did not. How could I not know the world-famous guy for years?
Starting point is 00:01:03 Because you don't watch cooking shows. You didn't know. Welcome to PTI, boys and girls. In today's episode, the Ravens Fall to 1 and 4, a Cardinal makes a cardinal error, and the Yankees are in a hole. But we begin today with the NFL and the last two unbeaten teams,
Starting point is 00:01:18 Buffalo and Philadelphia, going down to defeat. Wilbon, I am incredulous. You actually have this. Ding, ding, ding. The Eagles lost to Denver, which scored the last 18 points of the game, and the bills lost to New England, who got a terrific performance out of Drake May.
Starting point is 00:01:31 Well, Bon, what do these results say about any of the teams involved? Well, the first two teams, the teams that people presumed were going to win these games, the Eagles and Buffalo, nobody's going undefeated. There's no 72 dolphins in this group. You don't look at any team that has played through four weeks of this season and go, aha, they're the 85 bears or the 72 dolphins or the one lost 49ist teams with Joe Montana. You don't. They're not that great. So people need to stop. Or the Patriots some years back with the Patriots.
Starting point is 00:02:00 that went 18 or 17 or lost. They're not that. So they're going to lose, not only going to lose yesterday, they're all going to lose two or three more times at least, even the best teams. And I still think the Eagles are among that. The Eagles, though, I will say this. So let's narrow this down.
Starting point is 00:02:18 What does this say about any one of the teams specifically? The Eagles, what are they doing? Throwing the ball every down, dropping back 40 times while calling 11 running plays. Like one design. rushing play in the second half while throwing the ball 20 or more. No, no, no, what are
Starting point is 00:02:36 they doing? And so coaches get so fancy and sometimes you get a new play caller and I wonder if Siriani just as I say to this guy in the middle of the week, step over, I'll call the plays. So the Eagles, do I think something major is wrong with the Eagles or say, Kwokley? No, it's being overstated by
Starting point is 00:02:52 everybody who talks about football today is being overstated. What's wrong with the Eagles? They're not on the same page. They'll be fine. Okay. So both of these teams lost at home, which really surprised me. And I will add, parenthetically here, did not surprise me as much as Washington going to Los Angeles and falling behind 10-0 to the charges. Yeah, and then scoring the last 27 points in the game and winning 27.10. I was stunned because I thought after the chargers have lost to the Giants, they go back
Starting point is 00:03:25 home and they win this game comfortably. So that surprised me the most. But, But let me get to the bills. Billy and the Bills. Yeah, bills and the Eagles right here. Look, I agree with you that no team is going through undefeated, not through 17 games. That's not going to happen. So the takeaway for me is that we don't have a great team out there right now. Maybe we do, and that team has yet to unveil itself to us, because this is really only like the end of Act 1 in the season so far.
Starting point is 00:03:58 But I will say this. the teams that beat them, Denver and New England, they are in a resurgent mode now because they hired very good coaches. They hired Sean Payton and Mike Vrable. And they have, right now, Bo Nix is learning how to be a good quarterback. Drake May is learning how to be a good quarterback. Jaden Daniels is learning how to be a great quarterback. You don't have a good quarterback. You cannot win in this league.
Starting point is 00:04:24 The Saints, the Giants, the Jets right now, the Bengals, the Brue. rounds. They can't win in this league. So, Mike, if you ask me who's the MVP right now, it's only five weeks, who's the MVP right now? My list is three. My list is Baker Mayfield, Daniel Jones, Jack, Jack, Jack. Jack, is I just watched
Starting point is 00:04:44 Dak in person throw three picks in a game two weeks ago. He's got to score 40 for them a week. It's overstated his, he beat the Jets yesterday. I understand, and they stink. But I think those guys have been really good. He's been really good. I just watched him throw three picks in a game to lose. to get crushed.
Starting point is 00:05:00 So, you know, but just let's calm. Let's slow it down a little bit. We have other losses to discuss. Real bad ones. The Ravens field of one in four, one and four. After getting blasted by the Texans, the Cardinals had a win over the Titans in the bag until dude just tosses the game away.
Starting point is 00:05:22 The Raiders barely showed a pulse against the Colts, the Dolphers blue of 17, nothing lead to the Panthers. and the Giants turn the ball over five straight times while falling to the Saints. Meanwhile, your jets are now 0 and 5 after losing two those cabas. Worst loss yesterday was what? Okay, so I'm tempted because you have a house in Scottsdale
Starting point is 00:05:42 to say that it's the Arizona car. That's what I'm saying. Because they are at home, they are up, let's see, 21 to 3 against a winless team and they lose 22 to 21, all because you're running back. Demericado, I think, is his name, a 72-yard run on a, scrimmage, but he doesn't hold the ball, going across the goal line, he flips it.
Starting point is 00:06:02 They lose that. They'd have been up 22 in the fourth, and they would not have lost that. And as a result, they lost that, they lost that game. The fault of two and three, as opposed to being three and two on a week that the 49ers win and probably, you need to keep pace. That's right. They just go away. But I'm not, I'm not going to say that because I honestly believe that the worst loss by far
Starting point is 00:06:21 is the Baltimore Ravens. The Baltimore Ravens are one and four. In the four losses. I'll get to that. He doesn't play defense, does he? No, he doesn't. So that's what I'll end up saying. So in those four losses, they've given up 160 points at 40 points a game.
Starting point is 00:06:38 That defense, that great historic defense, that's down the drain at the moment. Not here. They have imploded, all right? They gave up 44 points to the Texans who were averaging 16 a game. They gave up 44. So as we say in French at the moment, the Ravens, Se mort. Okay? It's not happening for them.
Starting point is 00:07:00 It's not happening for them. Look, the Ravens was, that's bad, right? And that, that defense is non-existent for a franchise. What's worse? What's worse? The Cardinals. The game's over. The game's won.
Starting point is 00:07:11 You're playing a winless team. You're at home. The game's over. Dude, just, because everybody's got to do this now. Let me, let me, let me go cut him. Let me go straight to that. Last night. Starting.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Look, I saw this the first time it happened in modern memory. Deshawn Jackson. Yeah, Philadelphia. Texas Stadium. I was there watching it. I think I was. And it was so stunning, you couldn't believe in real time. And Deshawn Jackson went on to have a great career.
Starting point is 00:07:33 Yeah. Okay. But then we just saw this last week. We see it last week when a dude on the Colts, he just sort of gives it up. He's playing with the balls. He crosses the goes to playing with his food. I would cut people. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:48 You are so self, if you're not selfish, you're so self-centered, the celebration is more important to you than winning the damn game. get out. I would throw people out. The other games were fairly predictable. The giant stink. Jackson Dart is a work and progress. He's not as great as they had to be. He's not a work in progress.
Starting point is 00:08:08 Like J.J. McCarthy. Everything is a work in progress. So they lost to a winless team, but nobody is surprised. Not really surprised on that. The Jets are even worse. The Jets are irrelevant. Again. Their rookie coach is now,
Starting point is 00:08:21 no jet coach has ever been 0 in 5 before. I don't know if he gets another year. No. No. The guy in Miami is, Montgomery, McDaniel, they stink right now. That's a terrible loss. The sands in the hourglass are running out on him.
Starting point is 00:08:34 And the Raiders, they're not any good. At least they lost to a fairly decent team. The culture are fairly decent team. Not used to be in one before. Let's move to playoff baseball. The Yankees who had given up 10 runs to Toronto in the first game, gave up 13 runs in the second game. They are limping back to New York.
Starting point is 00:08:50 Now, the Detroit Tigers were beaten late by Seattle yesterday. That series now tied at one. Wilbon, what was your biggest takeaway from the first four? games in the American League Division series? Max Fried getting bounced. That's it. That's all. I don't want to overstate this because I think the Yankees, I don't want to sound like Aaron Boone's twin,
Starting point is 00:09:08 but I believe the Yankees can come back and win game three in Roots' house, and they can be fine. We've got a series. It's the best three out of five. So I believe that can happen. I sort of believe it will happen. I'm not saying I got the Yankees winning the series. I'm saying the Yankees are going to win game three,
Starting point is 00:09:24 and then we'll see. But free getting, you know, Nick? That's what, because if that doesn't happen, if that game goes according to form, that series is also one-one,
Starting point is 00:09:37 just like Detroit, Seattle, which was a tremendous game. So I watched, I watched that game, the Yankee game. There was a look on Freed's face. He was forlorn. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:46 He did not know what was happening to him. Nothing he threw was reaching its intended target. I thought, I have to be honest here, I thought the Tigers were going to win yesterday. I did too. had Tarrick Scuba on the mound. The last time we saw him...
Starting point is 00:10:00 Scuba only gave up four or five hits. The last time we saw him, he had 14 strikeouts. He ends up seven innings. He has two solo home runs to Polanco, right? Yeah. But still, he only gives up two. And he strikes out seven, he strikes out nine, something like that. Very credible performance.
Starting point is 00:10:17 But the pitching staff on the other side limits the tigers to just three hits. And then when the tigers need relief and they go to the bullpen, they bring out Kyle Finningin, who I watched for years in Washington, And it doesn't surprise me at all that three hits later that game was over. Didn't surprise me. Yeah. But at least that's a competitive series. Yankee series is not yet competitive.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Not yet. Not yet. I just think there's a lot of drama to go in both those series. And by the way, the Yankees have given up over 20 runs. You think they get back home because why? Because they're four and two against Toronto in Yankee Stadium? They're going to win game three. Okay.
Starting point is 00:10:53 But if it goes back to Toronto, where it's rain and runs, what are you? thing's going to happen. Okay, but let's see how it does if it does. I just think that the Yankees can sell us. I like Boone's approach. I like him by the way. Saying so. Have you ever heard of this guy, you're savage? Had you heard of him? I'd heard of him,
Starting point is 00:11:12 but I didn't know he was that good. Five and a third of no hits and 11 K's. I had not heard of Schlitler before and I had not heard of West Savage. They're going to have to deal with Schlittler. Oh yeah, he's got easy. He's going to come back and pitch. He gave four, right? Okay, but you, okay, so you don't compare him to Jackson Dart. In other words, you don't think
Starting point is 00:11:30 that was a one shot, and then he regressive. What he did, when you're a pitcher and you've got the ball in your case, you're in control of that game. I guess a quarterback is as well. No, I don't have him being Jackson Dart going four turnovers. Let's take a break. Coming up, Penn State fell to UCLA,
Starting point is 00:11:46 but was that the most compelling result of the college football weekend? Spoiler alert. Wow. Phil's Cubs. Who's going to even their divisional series tonight of either one of them? Why, one on better. They both better.
Starting point is 00:12:00 The Yankees were down 12-0 in the fifth yesterday. Doesn't even matter. Doesn't matter. You don't think there's momentum here. Parton the Interruption is presented by the refreshing taste of twisted tea, hard-ice tea. Please drink responsibly, part of happy hour. Welcome back to Pardon the Interruption, presented by Twisted Tea, hard-ice tea. Part of Happy Hour.
Starting point is 00:12:26 Time to find out. What is vexing our viewers in mail time. Let me see what's first. Mealtime. How about that? A little iteration. Here we go. Go to the glasses.
Starting point is 00:12:41 All right. Which team is more likely to even their series tonight? The Phillies are the Cubs? I mean, the Phillies in that lineup. You know, and they led three. Better than San Diego's lineup, isn't it? And they're home. They're home.
Starting point is 00:12:57 Home field in baseball is not like home field in football or the NBA. It isn't. I guess my natural inclination with Lazzardo pitching is to say Philadelphia. What about your team? Well, wait a minute. You've ruined your whole life for the Cubs. The Cubs are going to win tonight. Okay, well. In the last two seasons,
Starting point is 00:13:17 we have had the edge on the cheese heads, including 7-6 this year, even though they won the division by five games. Yeah. Craig Counsel made a big mistake trotting our All-Star out there on short rest to pitch game one. Matthew Boy, there's no point in doing that. Just own it. He didn't own it. I don't like that, but I'm a council guy. I believe the play.
Starting point is 00:13:36 against this old team. There's a trick at least a couple of aces up his sleeve. I believe the Cubs with Imanaga will bounce back tonight even though I'ma
Starting point is 00:13:44 giving up a lot of runs in Milwaukee. I believe the Cubs and Phillies will even their series. So I wish you luck tonight. You've been talking about I'ma
Starting point is 00:13:54 all year. Yes, I have. Yes, the Brewers have been a better team. They won five more games. But we all root for a competitive series. I just want to talk
Starting point is 00:14:03 briefly about the Phillies who I think will win the Phillies and the Dodgers. I actually want to talk about Shoahatani and pitching. Now, the Phillies got to him in one inning. Their right-handed batters took him to right field. They got three runs off him. But his line at the end was six innings with nine strikeouts.
Starting point is 00:14:19 And to me, I haven't seen him pitch really for the Dodgers. It's been years since I've seen him pitch. I think of him as a hitter and just a hitter. And when I saw him pitch, I was actually amazed at how good he was. How much of the ball breaks? A sweeper. Yeah. And you know what I'd like to see as well?
Starting point is 00:14:36 Well, who did they go to? They went to Glasnow out of the bullpen. I'd like to see them go to Kirshow. Out of the bullpen. They can't do it. You know why? No. I'm convinced.
Starting point is 00:14:44 I told you this. Why? Because I believe Kirschel is going to start. Maybe game four. Oh, okay. I believe that. Last one. I mean, who would you rather have start for you if you had to go to that game?
Starting point is 00:14:52 He finished 11 and 2 this year, so I'd rather have to start. Okay. We agree on that. College football time. Yeah. What was the most compelling result of the college football weekend? Okay. The most compelling result was Penn State losing to a.
Starting point is 00:15:06 a winless UCLA team, a team that fired its coach two weeks ago, a team that had gotten to this point in four games, 57 points, and they got 42 on Penn State. Penn State was number two in the country a couple of weeks ago, and now they are MIA. You don't know where they are. We knew that James Franklin's... Well, I don't get to them in a second.
Starting point is 00:15:26 We knew James Franklin would lose the good teams, didn't know he'd also lose the bad teams. And yes, let's make room for Texas. The preseason number one, also MIA, send out a search party. They lose the Florida, the most disappointing team in the country until this game had one win against L.I.U. I grew up on Long Island. I didn't know that LU even had a football team.
Starting point is 00:15:47 And one... Are they the blackbirds? They were the blackbirds. And one small... Only basketball. One small other thing. Bill Belichick down to Clemson. It's small.
Starting point is 00:15:56 Wait, 35 to 3 in the second quarter. Is it Chapel Bill or is it Chapel Swill? And that's the end of my routine. It's bad. Carolina's bad, but okay, they're irrelevant. How about Penn State? Pin State. Ding, ding, ding. That is the answer to your question.
Starting point is 00:16:13 Yeah, about that. I mean, I feel bad for my friend Heather Dinnish right now who said they were going to win the national championship this year. It looks unlikely. Because they're not going to win the national championship. It looked like. Here's a question. And you and I started to discuss this right away like everybody else.
Starting point is 00:16:26 I'm sitting in Chicago having the score, and I'm sitting at the Northwestern game, what are you doing with them? Having the score relayed to me. What do you do with them? Don't you think, and you are watching it, I couldn't see it. I called you. Didn't you think Penn State was going to rally and win that game? Sure.
Starting point is 00:16:38 We both did. Sure. Now, what do you do with Franklin? A guy who's been a worthy coach at a place where football matters. Matters. They've won an national championship. You're not going to fire him during the season. No, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:16:49 But at the end of the year, how much further do they go with him? Right? How much further do they go? This is a stunning result. UCLA is unthinkably bad. Really? I saw them last week. I'm glad they were bad.
Starting point is 00:17:03 They beat him by 20. Devinston. You're beaten by 20? Well, the final wasn't 20, but we handled. Enough female. Let's take one last break. Still to come. Connor McDavid decides whether he'll be staying and playing in Edmonton.
Starting point is 00:17:14 And the Las Vegas Aces, excuse me, take the first two from Phoenix in the desert, which end of the desert. Maybe UCLA wasn't that bad. Maybe we just put it on. Oh, stop it. Oh, stop it. Fifty four points in four games. They were probably better than we thought. Do you like this jacket?
Starting point is 00:17:28 I like that jacket. I like that jacket. It's pretty nice jacket. It's very nice. It's got the white buttons. Pardon me. Interruption is presented by the refreshing taste of twisted tea, hard ice tea. Please drink responsibly, part of Happy Hour.
Starting point is 00:17:46 Happy time, people. Happy 26th birthday, Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence will be on center stage tonight as his Jaguars play Kansas City on Monday night football. Lawrence was widely considered a can't miss prospect when he came out of Clemson, having won one national championship and gotten to another. Lawrence lost only two games in college. Wilbonne used said he was the best question. quarterback prospect you ever saw.
Starting point is 00:18:08 After Elway. But so far, Lawrence has kind of sort of missed. He was a pro bowler in 2022 when the Jaguars went to the playoffs and won a game, but since then, nothing much. So far this season, Lawrence has 845 yards passing, five touchdowns, four interceptions, and a 49.2 quarterback rating. Isn't this kind of a big game for him? I don't want to overstate it, but big season, sort of he can have that transition.
Starting point is 00:18:34 And I'm not going to say he's a bus because I don't believe. that. But if he can win this game and get some momentum. I agree with that. Happy anniversary, Stephen, Vote. Around this day, three years ago in the final game of his playing career, the veteran age patcher was introduced over the PA system at Oakland Coliseum by
Starting point is 00:18:50 his young children. Innings later, vote would send the last pitch he ever saw as a major leaguer over the right field fence. Surprisingly, vote was named Manager of the Cleveland Guardians for the 2014 season, led them to first place in the AL Central, winning manager of the year honors.
Starting point is 00:19:06 Vote followed that up this season with a scorching and historic September. Cleveland passed the Tigers for the AL Central Crown after being down 15 and a half games in July, the largest deficit a team has ever overcome to win a division or a league. Catcher. They see the whole field. Catcher. By the way, you don't need a PA system in Oakland. That old Oakland ballpark is so empty.
Starting point is 00:19:28 You could just walk around and do an individual introduction back then. It's too bad. He became the manager in him. He's done a hell of a job. A lot of time. Happy trails to leaving Edmonton for Connor McDavid. The biggest star in the game has decided to stay with the Oilers after an offseason of deliberating his options.
Starting point is 00:19:45 The deal is a team-friendly two years, $25 million, which get tacked on to this season. So the three-time league MVP will continue his quest for his first Stanley Cup with the only NHL franchise for which he has played. The Oilers have made the final the last two seasons falling to the Panthers both times. By the way, the Panthers begin their quest
Starting point is 00:20:05 for a three-peat-t tomorrow night. at 5 p.m. on this very channel, bumping us to the deuce. The Panthers is going against that other Connor, my Connor, Baderden, the Blackhawks. I'm rooting again for McDavid. And by the way, his salary, $12 million a year?
Starting point is 00:20:20 Do you know what the average salary last year in the NBA was? Average. $17.1.1.1 million dollars average. Joe L&B makes that in a single game. Right? He makes that in a single game. One correction. L.I.U. R now or is now?
Starting point is 00:20:35 L-I-U-R now? The sharks, though they were once the blackbirds. Why would you change from the blackboards? Birds. And it's a great nickname. You don't like that. Chances are you're fool. Blackbirds, great nickname.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Such a good basketball team in the like 50s. They never had football, right? No, not to my knowledge. Not to my note. Let's go to the big finish. Let's do it. Colorado coach Dion Sanders believes he has more blood clots in his leg, your thoughts. I read all about this Saturday.
Starting point is 00:20:59 Heard Dion's comments, worried and hoped the best for Coach Prime. Bengals coach, Zach Taylor, says the team will evaluate its options at quarterback. What does that mean? What it means is that Browning has eight interceptions in the four games that he has played. They don't win the games. So they're looking around to see what they can do. John Moran, week to week. If the spraining his left ankle in practice, is that significant?
Starting point is 00:21:22 It's where Memphis just left off. Yes, it's significant. They don't seem to be able to get around this portion of the program. Rangers hire Skip Schumacher to replace Bruce Bochie. Is he a good hire? He managed a couple of years at the Marlins and brought him to the playoffs one year and was manager of the EA. I think he's pretty good. I think he's pretty good.
Starting point is 00:21:40 Last one, the aaces are up 2-0 on the Mercury in the WNBA finals. Is that a big deal? Yes, but we swing to the southern end of the desert now. It's an all-desert final, isn't it? It's a best of seven, I believe the best, first best of seven WNBA final. But all desert. It's a long series. All-desert final.
Starting point is 00:21:58 You've got to love that. Huh? Weather's getting good out there right now. It's great. We're out of time. We'll try to do better than next. time I'm Tony Cornynheim. I'm Mike Robine. We're bumped to the deuce by hockey tomorrow.
