Pardon the interruption, but I'm Mike Welbott. Tony, Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are going to start in the new Miami Vice movie. Do you like that casting?
Tony Cornhizer, what do they have that we don't? And I don't know Austin Butler. He was Elvis.
In a movie Elvis? You know how I feel about it. Elvis was a hero to most, but he never meant to me.
So, but we know Michael B. Jordan. We were in two of his movies. We were in greed and creed to. I get residuals from these movies.
Let's call him and ask him.
This dude had than we don't, besides a white jumpsuit, and you might have one of those.
He's got 50 years on us.
Welcome to PTI, boys and girls.
In today's episode, the Niners beat the Seahawks, the Vikings stay atop, a jammed-up NFC North,
and Georgia gets a huge win at Alabama.
But we begin today with end-of-game mistakes by the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington commanders
yesterday that cost them wins and were astonishing.
changing. Philadelphia had just kicked a go-ahead field goal with eight seconds left against Jacksonville,
which had no timeouts left. The Eagles somehow decided to kick the ball off so it could be returned,
and the ensuing 53-yard return gave Jacksonville one second left and the ability to kick the game
winning 57-yard field goal. Michigan second. The commanders had the ball in easy field goal range in
overtime against the Giants and ran a play that ate up all the remaining 13 seconds, and they did not
get to the line of scrimmage to spike the ball for the field goal.
Philadelphia coach Nick Siriani and Washington coach Dan Quinn took responsibility.
Wilbon, how do you apportion the blame?
100% of it on those two guys.
And by the way, let me say this, the Washington mistake was so egregious, so historically
stupid.
I'm not going to say unprecedented in it because maybe something happened in, you know,
1938 between the Canton pros and, I don't know.
It was so bad it takes the giants off the hook for.
choking like dogs themselves in the same game in the same overtime, okay?
That's right.
So, but no, I give it to the coaches, Tony.
I mean, you've got to be everything we've heard from former coaches over the now to last,
you know, 16 hours has been you're in the ear of the quarterback.
You have got to say, and by the way, the quarterback gets some blame, but it starts with the coach.
You're saying to him multiple times, spike it, left hash, right hash, we're kicking the
field goal. What is Jason Daniels doing? I don't, is it
fireable? Is it fireable? You're asking me? Thank you. I'm going to tell you.
Okay. To me, these are different situations. Philadelphia made a mistake. Washington
went insane. Washington, I've never seen this. It's the dumbest thing I've ever seen. I've
never seen it on the NFL level. Ever. I have never seen a team so lack of days ago about
getting up to spite the ball to win the game. I've never seen anything like.
that. Now, after it was over, because I hate
the phrase, a sense of urgency,
but they needed a sense of urgency.
How about a sense of the game?
They didn't even know that. So afterwards,
Jaden Daniels said it was his fault.
It was partially his fault.
He's the leader of the squad. He's on the field
and he's sitting down
after he's stopped. He doesn't know he
doesn't have a time out. Okay, he's got to
get, he said he knew he didn't have a time.
If I were a sports columnist
at the Washington Post still, in the paper
today, I would have fired
Dan Quinn and Jaden Daniels.
And then because they were, the team was
unprepared for what
they were being asked to do.
Win a division game. Somebody would have said to me, you can't
fire Jaden Gaines because he's a player and he's good.
But Dan Quinn,
like as I sit here now,
I don't think he'll be back next year.
The Philadelphia thing is sort of
different. I don't know why you would kick off
and allow a return. You wouldn't.
Kick it out of timeout. They have no timeouts.
They have no timeouts. They have one play. They've got to go 80 yards.
The problem with
Quinn, who's the fine coach in many areas.
Tony, he had a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl.
And he blew that.
And time management was in question.
And then he just said this about Jane Daniels real quick,
who has all the physical talent, man, he went out to, he's got courage.
He went out there yesterday and put himself in harm's way and ran several times.
But here's what I don't like.
Two lack of days ago.
Get up and spike the ball?
No, no, no.
I'm talking about his entire demeanor.
As a field general, which is what I want.
Would you fire Nick Siriani?
If I wrote a column in the Philadelphia Inquirer,
I wouldn't object to it.
Here's a problem.
He's 61 and 19, and he's won a Super Bowl.
Well, they look like lately.
Oh, they're disintegrated.
Okay, then what are you waiting for?
They're disintegrated.
Let's move to some of Sunday's notable wins.
The Niners' edges of the Seahawks in Seattle with Cooper Cup,
said to have come up just shy of a lay first down
that would have kept this team in the game.
Garbage called Drake May, and the Patriots rolled over a Raiders team.
They, you know, gotten off to a pretty decent.
Three and O.
They were 3 in 0.
And then not now.
And the Ravens played with
Tyler Huntley in place of an injured
Lamar Jackson,
topped the Falcons team in overtime
that have been playing really well lately.
Which one of these stands out to you?
Okay, well, I loved the Seahawks 49ers game.
It's the best game.
I could have watched eight quarters of that.
There was a lot of stuff going on in that.
And they have looked great lately.
San Francisco's looked great,
and Mike Evans has made them even greater.
Wow.
And they really look good.
But the reason it's not the most notable for me,
because they're going to play again at least once
and maybe twice. I back
off the Ravens game
with the Falcons for this reason.
Michael Penick sits out the overtime.
He's the catalyst for everything they've done
in the last three weeks. He's in there. The difference
between Michael Pinnox's on the field
or Michael Pinnox's alterfield for Atlanta.
That's right. And Tua comes in. Two
throws a quick pick.
Tua turn the ball over below. You know,
I mean, that doesn't work. So for me, it's going to be
the Patriots for this reason. Their last
two weeks, they have beaten
Buffalo in Buffalo.
They beat a ragdog
yesterday.
It'd be nobody.
They destroyed the radar.
Wait a second.
Kansas City did not destroy them like that.
They've scored, is it 72?
74 points in last two games.
And Drake May is in turnaround.
That's important.
Get them out of here.
They're at home.
They're a Super Bowl team.
Win the damn game at home.
Don't tell me about the Raiders.
The Raiders are junk.
The Raiders are going to wind up seven and nine or seven and ten.
You come, stop it.
Stop it.
There's one game in the NFL.
yesterday that mattered, and you covered it.
Yeah.
Okay? Seattle, San Francisco.
Don't go looking under the bed covers.
I thought Cup had named the first down.
He did make the first down.
And officials should stay out of the way.
And they got in the way.
They got in the way.
Don't trust our eyes.
Cup made.
Don't tell me about around the world
and the difference between the pylon and the...
Is there any way you can yell about analytics here
or marketing people?
It was awesome.
I thought he made.
I thought he reached...
That game's going to be.
goal we're going to see. They're two even
teams. They beat the hell out of each other.
The tackling was unbelievable. Do you know what the 49ers
have done this year so far? Yeah.
They've beaten the Broncos, the Rams,
and the Seahawks. You know what their record
was last year in the regular season? Forty and 11.
They beat all three of these
teams. They look, they look
terrific at the moment. These two
teams are what you want
to see. There's some other teams that'll bubble up.
Did you see the ball that Smith and the Gigba dropped?
In his hands, that's a touchdown.
Let me ask you something.
Touch time is a great player.
We right now, if we called Jerry Rice and say, Jerry, you ever drop a big pass?
Yeah.
It's like that commercial that Michael Jordan has.
Were you stunned?
I missed more buzzer-beater than I made.
He dropped it.
Yes, of course, because he's that great.
Yes.
Because, wait a minute.
Because who made plays on a bum ankle in that game to keep his team in it or ahead?
He did.
He did.
I'll take him ahead of A.J. Brown and some of these other clowns people go on and on about.
Really?
Because A.J. Brown always open.
Yeah, please.
Let's move to your division, Wilbon.
We have to.
Your bears got throttled by Green Bay 3,1 to 7.
Your preference to start Tyson Baygent didn't work out at all.
And your boy, Ben Johnson, had to go back to Case Keenham.
The Detroit Lions scored 45 points in Arizona.
They have now scored 164 points in five games, Tops in the league.
And Minnesota remained unbeaten by beating New Orleans 2013 in a game a little closer than that.
Vikings are now 5 and 0, but the other three teams are now three and two.
Wilbon did Sunday's results make the Vikings hold on the NFC North more or less certain?
They don't have a hold on anything, and they're the best team in the division right now.
I told you during the week the Bears are going to get throttled.
And people who are a lot more football saving like me, like Rex Ryan, whose father, of course, I idolized.
We're on television that said the Bears are going to win.
No, they weren't.
You're not going to win three straight games with a backup quarterback in Green Bay when Green Bay has stunked out.
That's just not smart, okay?
So the bears were going to get throttled.
I told you it was a 20-point game, and it was more than that.
The Bears will get back to where they're supposed to be, because Caleb Williams,
based on what we saw pre-game and what we saw on Tyson-Bajit in-game,
Caleb Williams will play next week, and that division will come back
because the Packers will get better again.
So I figured you would hold the light out for Caleb Williams, because I believe...
He's coming back.
I believe that you think with Caleb Williams, the bears are better than everyone in that division.
At least it's good.
I am, I hold Minnesota in awe.
I can't believe they're 5-0.
They don't score any points.
They scored 22 points a game.
Now their defense is great.
It only gives up 13 points a game.
But here's what they got coming up, Minnesota.
They got four of the next five games,
Detroit, Buffalo, Green Bay, and San Francisco.
And to be fair, they have had a pretty easy run so far
because they've had Tampa Bay, New Orleans, and Miami.
So I think they're holding somewhat tenuous.
at Green Bay, and I look especially
at Detroit. You know the division better
than I. This is a division of
quarterbacks. Jordan Love
was tremendous yesterday.
He was tremendous. Against a
defense that people started going crazy
with praise for, which was dumb.
The Bears defense, stop it. Gough now
has 12 touchdown passes
and no interceptions.
But their defense is terrible. They're like
Cincinnati and Dallas were last year
in the NFL. Not that bad. If they had a defense,
they'd be great. I don't know that that bad, but let me
Let me just say this, Tony.
That division is going to change again because Minnesota's quarterback,
who's been terrific so far, we've seen him go eight and one.
At the beginning of years.
At the beginning of years.
At the beginning of years.
Yes.
And then not so much.
So who do you have right now to win that division?
You have the Bears, don't you?
You know, I don't know who I have to win it.
I think those four teams are even.
I think Detroit is not quite as good as they showed yesterday.
They beat the Cardinals.
That's like the Patriots beating the Raiders.
Stop.
Let me go back to Drake May for a second.
He was hot garbage for the first three weeks.
He had one touchdown and six picks.
That was overstated.
The last two games, seven touchdowns and one thing is supposed to do.
You don't get credit for doing what you're supposed to do.
Okay, so they were in the Super Bowl once.
They could be back again.
It could be, but don't the Raiders?
Come on now.
I just said they started three and oh.
Let's take a break.
Coming up, Georgia had a huge win over Alabama.
But was there even more intriguing result in college football this week?
Yeah.
You need Evanston?
And the Brewers.
No.
Evanston over Ball State, no.
Take game one.
I'll just test it to see if you're going.
Of the NLDS as the Guardians completed that notable, predictable comeback against the white side.
Do you know Detroit has in the next two weeks?
Yeah.
Green Bay, Minnesota.
So we'll know everything we need to know.
I know the whole NFC North schedule.
So we know everything we need to know in two weeks.
I think there'll be a three-way tie for that division.
At the end?
Yep.
Time to scrape around for a couple of coherency.
a couple of coherent emails.
Let me see what's...
How about a coherent question?
Mail time.
How did your NFC East do this week?
They got no wins.
Starting with Dallas on Thursday.
They got no wins and two teams played each other.
They all stink. That's not possible.
All stink.
What was the most intriguing
result of the college football weekend?
Tony, again, this is going to be like
my answer to San Francisco, Seattle.
I love Elaine Kitha Law.
You know that was reveling in that.
I would tell people what text you sent,
but it's not allowed on a family network.
Thank you.
Thank you for sparing me.
Right.
Okay, so Lane Kiffin's out for a while.
He could be out of our conversation, like, you know, the Lakers or so.
You could just be out for a while.
Okay.
The answer is Alabama, Georgia.
It was an even game, and you get what should be called a penalty, a pass interference
call, which is going to put the ball at like the 19, and it's going to give you a first down.
You know, if you're Alabama and you're playing even in this game,
and a field goal makes all the difference in the world.
Man, look, I thought Georgia was going to win that game comfortably,
10 to 13. No, no, no, no, no.
So I agree with you that's the most important game.
Right. You know, there's no question about that.
Nice to see Kirby Smart get a win in Alabama.
He worked for Nick Saban for nine years in Alabama and had never won that.
That's nice. But I find myself more intrigued by the losers.
You mentioned Lane Kiffin.
Lane Kiffin just lost at Kentucky a basketball school.
Yeah. And the coach at Kentucky, Will Stein, could be the next Cygnetti.
He could be.
Texas lost.
They were number one.
They were commanding the game in the first half.
Maybe Archmanning isn't that good.
Maybe that's too bad picks in the fourth quarter.
Maybe.
Maybe.
Maybe every network and every expert on every network.
Florida again got crushed.
I called you after that one.
Okay.
Let's go back to Kentucky.
Right?
This guy's worth watching.
Yes.
That's not saying this.
Because he walked in there and said, why are we going to win?
We're going to win because of me.
I mean, at first, you want to just look at.
look at him and say, shut up your dope.
And then, by the way, the creativity of his team.
And he goes for two-point convergence.
He goes to win.
Florida State lost again and again.
Why are you watching them?
I'm talking about losers here.
13 straight road games.
How does he still have a job, Norville?
And in your conference, what?
Oregon loses at home.
Wow.
Not to USC.
That was funny.
To UCLA.
I'm worried.
Not to USC.
I'm worried.
You know who's there soon?
Last one.
Purple is there soon.
We'll see.
A little worried about some angry feelings.
Oregon may just be a disappointment this year, period.
We'll see.
Kind of one last year.
What do you make it as Weekends developments in baseball?
Okay.
So I parked myself in front of my television set last night to watch Scoobo and the Ms.
Little did I know or think neither would be there after the fifth inning.
I did not think that.
Now, I loved what I saw, but it was.
It just didn't last as long as I would have liked.
It's fair.
I believe that the Milwaukee Brewers had to win that game.
I agree.
Not that I think they will win the series,
but I thought if they lost that game,
they would lose the series.
The Dodgers don't bring any runners in
in scoring position.
They are two of 22 in that circumstance
throughout the playoffs.
I was sort of happy.
I will admit I rooted for the White Sox,
but I was sort of happy that Cleveland won three in a row
in elimination games.
The White Sox just go out and hack
Like a Little League team
at every single pitch that leaves a pitcher's hand.
You don't want to see that in October.
Enough of that.
21 strikeouts on Saturday night.
21 out of 27.
In the three games that they lost,
they struck out 52 of 81 ounce.
How is that possible?
I told you last week,
you can't go out there and just hack it everything.
And look, they're a year ahead at least.
Oh, they're a great story.
So they still get...
But let me go back to Milwaukee for a second.
When you put the Ms. out there at home, you got to win.
Okay?
Okay.
And the Dodgers let him off the hook.
They did.
Well, there wasn't great.
There were inning-ending double plays in the first and the second.
They let him off the hook.
Yeah.
And I don't want to hear about where the Dodgers can't score any runs.
Why not?
They got 24 Hall of Famers in the damn lineup.
Don't score.
Plate a run.
I don't want to hear about this if you got Moogie Betts and Otani and Will Smith.
I don't want to hear that.
garbage. The Dodgers are
two-time chance. Yeah. Push across
a third run or get out of my life.
By the way, you quoted
the old Arizona coach, the old
Northwestern coach, let him off the hook.
Let him off the hook. Denny Green.
The Ms.
is going to be better in the next start. You know he is.
Yes. The experience of it will make him better.
Milwaukee. And stop saying I like
Milwaukee. I hate Milwaukee. Would you
say I like the Packers? Would you do that?
I would say that you must hate the Dodgers
because you're rooting for the Padres against them and you're rooting for
Milwaukee against enough female.
I win. Let's take
one last break still to come when Marvin Harrison
Jr. deliver on his promise.
Now that he's back with C.J. Stroud, what is the
deal there? Nobody can figure it out and do
the Rams or bills have the
edge tonight in Monday night? I think the Rams
have the edge. What do you think?
Yeah. But the bills are
coming off a loss. This is good stuff. This is the game you want
to see.
Happy time, people. Happy belated
65th birthday. Steve Yon.
Our man.
The Hall of Fame quarterback was on three Super Bowl champions in San Francisco
and was the MVP of the one where he threw six touchdown passes
and famously got the monkey off his back.
Young was the MVP of the NFL season twice and four times led the league in passing touchdowns.
And all that is nice.
But we celebrate Young's birthday yesterday because we love him.
We have a lot of great guests on this show, but Steve Young is the best.
Week after week, he is considerate, fearless, delightful,
empathetic. Week after week
he is simply brilliant. It is a
joy for us to talk to him and we
trust it is a joy for you to watch and listen.
Amen to everything you said and I'm going to pat
myself on the back. I would call you
from Santa Clara, California
during some downtime. And what would I say to you
about the smartest best
guy ever to talk? You said you went
right in front of his locker even if he didn't
play in the game. Yes. Yes. He was...
Got me in some trouble with the...
The other one. 16. And I don't care. Who was great?
He was great. He's the goat.
He's Mike goat the other one, but he ain't Steve Young.
Happy anniversary, Justin Verlander, around this day 14 years ago.
While in his first go-round in Detroit,
Verlander threw a complete game shutout over the Oakland A's
in an elimination playoff game.
Verlander allowed four hits and struck out 11.
Showing this allows us to show you Verlander's final appearance
of his 21-season career a couple of weeks ago.
Tiger manager, A.J. Hinch, went to get his pitcher
and sent out Verlander's seven-year-old daughter, Genevieve,
to escort him from the mound.
It was a lovely, tearful, perfect moment.
And Verlander said, quote, I was totally blindsided,
and it hit me like a ton of bricks.
I was sobbing, and I had to tell her
just to make sure she understood that I was happy
because she's never seen me cry like that, unquote.
Justin Verlander is one of my 10 favorite pictures ever.
There's one thing wrong with his career,
and I'm not going to say how I know,
but I know he was supposed to wind up with the Cubs
in 2017 or 18, I think 17.
And did not.
It didn't happen.
If it happens,
Major League Baseball history might be just a little different.
You maybe win another Rogue Series.
Happy Trails, Marvin Harrison Jr.
The Cardinal sent the number four overall pick
of the 2024 draft to the Texans
for a second rounder and a swap of late round selections.
Harrison is not produced as expected for Arizona.
He has just five catches for 85 yards this whole season.
But now he gets to reunite with quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Those two combine for 1263 yards and 14 touchdowns in 13 games at Ohio State,
just four seasons.
Duction home.
Speaking of the Texans, they're celebrating their first win after trouncing the terrible Titans.
Next up, the four-and-one Jaguars in London.
You and I, among others, are so confused about this Marvin Harrison train.
We actually put our reporter hats on this afternoon.
To call people.
And they don't know.
Nobody knows.
Nobody knows.
This is usually just one of two.
things. Either nobody likes him or he doesn't
want to be there, but they say no to them.
All right, let's go to the big finish. Let's do it.
The Dream and the Valkyrie swept
in the WNBA finalists. You had it both
wrong. Yes, you had Asia Wilson
getting swept out of the playoffs. No, you did. No.
Couldn't have that. James Madison
is leaving the Sunville Conference
for the American Conference. Who's in that?
I have no idea. The America East,
I know, because Binghamton's an app, it's not a football
conference. Look, James Madison,
these coaches, they've had, Signetti
and Stein, they ought to go to the Big Ten now.
Yeah. Flames haven't scored a point.
Flyers are 05 and 2.
Rangers lost Igor Shasturkin for the season.
Pick the worst one.
A Philly team being Ofer?
Fah!
Top-ranked Spain beat the U.S.
Women's National Team 2-0.
Your thoughts?
They played that four miles from here
and they play again tomorrow.
In Philly.
Tonight.
Near Philly.
Last one, Monday Night Football.
Bill's at Rams.
Which way you're leaning?
This is a matchup I really like.
I could make the case either way.
But you're asking me to pick
I'll take the Rams at home.
I had the wrong James Madison coach.
It's Chesney, the guy at UCLA who just beat Oregon.
Still?
They got coaches.
Sign guy came from.
A cradle of coaches now?
We're out of time.
We're trying to do better the next time.
Let me wave my flag.
I'm Tony Cornide.
I'm Mike Wilbon.
Same time tomorrow, knuckleheads.
