QAA Podcast - They’re Eating The Robots (Premium E355) Sample

Episode Date: September 27, 2026

Robots. First they came for our jobs, then they came for our sports, and now they’re coming to satisfy our every need (and maybe handing out death penalties). After a rise in chatter surrounding rob...ots due to this year’s robot olympics, Jake decided it was time to zoom out from our recent focus on AI to inspect the tech AI may be inhabiting in the not so distant future and the resulting conspiracies. Later, he shares a video of Jim Kardashian boxing with the Terminator only to discover the fight was put on by a real video game. That’s right folks - we’ve been swindled yet again. Starting point is 00:00:02 Well done. You found a way to connect to the internet. Welcome to the QAA podcast Premium Episode 355. They're eating the robots. As always, we are your host, Jake Rakatansky. Liv Aker. Julian Fields and Travis View. Every now and again, once in a blue moon, I come to the podcast with an update on which 80s film apocalypse we appear to be steering towards. And I'm pleased to report it's whichever movie puts a guy in the octagon with a remote-controlled Terminator.
Starting point is 00:01:07 Because this week, I came across some conspiracy theories on Reddit about the Robot Olympics held the past two years in Beijing, China, that got me thinking a lot about robots and how we don't hear enough about them. Am I right? It surprised me that it was going on for two years. I feel like I saw those clips going viral. I thought this was a brand new thing. No, this has been going on for two years. It kind of got glossed over last year a little bit.
Starting point is 00:01:33 It's not in the Olympics, but that clip of the robot kicking the child in the stomach is one of the funniest. What's that? We're going to learn about robots kicking. I've actually, it's funny that you say that because there's, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:48 But what happened? It kicks a little kid. Yeah, it does. It sure does. I had a buddy who played Wolverine at Universal Studios. Like he was like one of the, you know, like the park. characters. And one of the things that they would do is ride around on ATVs like him, Captain
Starting point is 00:02:04 America, Hulk, and some other guys. And he, one time he ran over a kid's foot. And he, like, didn't know what to do. He thought the kid had backed away from the ATV. But when he pulled away, he felt that kind of thump and he looked back at the kid. He didn't know what to do. So he was like, what would Wolverine do? And he growled at him and drove away. Okay. Well, let's not put the name of the person in here, because that is a crime for sure. Good for Wolverine Staying in character, really method. That was a perfect aside.
Starting point is 00:02:35 But, you know, back to my point, it's like everything is about artificial intelligence inside of the cyborg, but not the Bishop-flavored milk keeping its pistons pumping smoothly. What? You know, these things are kind of... You know, Bishop from aliens, you know?
Starting point is 00:02:53 Oh, yeah, it's not about the juices enough. I mean, I got the reference. I just don't understand what the fuck you're on. Well, yeah, because everybody's talking about the brain, but nobody's talking about the body, you know? The blood, the blood, the blood, the blood, the cum blood. The cum blood. The cum blood. The Ridley Scott Cumbblood. Yes, to me, and to you and Travis, I would imagine, these things are kind of impressive if you grew up in the 90s, and this was your idea of an advanced robot. And I've included a picture here of the vintage, vintage, vintage 1992 Tiger 2xel. Jake has put a little picture of a toy.
Starting point is 00:03:27 A cassette player. Little pictures of toys now. This is a new high for Jake. Did you guys have this? A little toy robot. Not this. No, it looks like, yeah, it looks like a little robo kind of like shaped cassette player. Yeah, it looks like a tape deck.
Starting point is 00:03:44 That's a tape deck, right? It's a cassette player, yeah, but I think it had its own robo cassettes, and that's how you would communicate. I'm not sure I never got one. Growing up, I did have a robot dinosaur that could like kind of walk really awkwardly and have a controller, and you could change the direction. Whoa, remote control robot? Yeah, I played with it again, like, a couple years ago, out of nostalgia, and I was like, this is the worst constructed toy. I've ever seen my life. So, clearly they've gotten better.
Starting point is 00:04:11 Clearly the technology has gotten better. It is disappointing that it's not, we don't get Terminator robots. Remember that tweet from like 10 years ago, where it's like, women will be having sex with robots more than humans by the year 2025. It's like, no, all the robots. You're always moving those goalposts. We can't, you can't fuck them. They just make slop. It's like the worst.
Starting point is 00:04:28 The worst side of artificial intelligence. Mm-hmm. Yes, which, live, you bring me exactly to my next point, which is that, like, robots kind of suck a little bit more than we would expect at this point. I mean, Travis, you said it. Like, my entire awareness of the robot Olympics in China was seeing videos of these things exploding on the track
Starting point is 00:04:46 or running after their trainer kind of scarily for a couple seconds before falling over and going to sleep. But, hey, one of them beat Usain's Bolt Records, so I'm sure CNN would say it's raising questions about what kind of award should be given a non-biological athlete. Sorry, I'm still bitter from that other episode. Yeah, you are, yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:04 Ha, my bitterness is all that can carry me through these trying years. Yeah, it is interesting, though. Like, if you had told me in the past, you know, hey, you're going to have, like, self-driving cars that, like, are, like, robo-taxies, full on. And we don't know how to make a cool robot yet. Like, we just have not really come up with it. That is true that I would have been, like,
Starting point is 00:05:27 whoa, the future feels a little out of sync. And you can't win, you can't lose with robot enthusiasts. There was a story that I chose not to include, because it wasn't actually part of the Olympics, but it was from around the same time in 2025 where this company unveiled their humanoid robot, and it looked so good that people thought that there was a human inside acting it,
Starting point is 00:05:48 and they had to bring it back on stage and cut its leg off, like in T2, when he peels his hand off to see the exos, the endoskeleton underneath. They did that on stage and then had the thing walk around again. It's just like you make one too real. People are like, eh, it's a human inside. And you make one that sucks. They're like, eh, sucks.
Starting point is 00:06:06 I feel like the accusation is that it's remote controlled usually. Like those Elon bots and stuff, it's not that they're not robots. It's just that there's somebody. Yeah, there's somebody controlling them. Well, we will also, we'll also discuss that for sure. All of Jake's disappointments. The toys are not good enough. These are the kind of episodes you're going to get from me from now on.
Starting point is 00:06:26 The tech ain't what I thought it would be. So anyways, look, let's talk about the first robot Olympics. Let's talk about the conspiracy theories surrounding them. Let's talk about the actual conspiracies by the Chinese military to acquire these robots after the Olympic Games. And let's talk about the guys who want to get into a cage and fight one with their fists for content. I mean, the Chinese are correct that that robot that kicked the child in the stomach could probably take down the average American. So if they want to invade us, the shitty robots we have is a. about all we need.
Starting point is 00:06:57 You know? I think this episode might be ever in your favor based on where we're going. Mm-hmm. I put in the notes, I was like, did you guys have any robots growing up? And Liv said she had, she had a little dinosaur robot. Julian, do you have any kind of bot? She had a little dinosaur robot. It's true.
Starting point is 00:07:15 I don't think I did. I really don't think I had a little robot that I did. I don't think I cared so, so much about robots growing up. I was into like Ninja Turtles. and like he man toys and shit. I didn't really much care if it was a little blinky, blinky, blinky robot. Travis, did you have some kind of science set where you build your own robot kit, a tinker toys?
Starting point is 00:07:40 Oh, so he's smarter than me. I wouldn't have a kit. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, you just said you weren't interested in that kind of stuff. I didn't make any kind of assumption. Is he wrong? Is he wrong? My cue is too low and I kept looking at the robot and being confused.
Starting point is 00:07:53 I'm just looking at Travis's hair right now and thinking, this might be the kind of guy who got his own kit when he was a kid. Yeah, a little robot kit. No, no, I didn't get that. I have to confess, yeah, my toys were mostly cartoon inspired too, you know. I had some teenage mutant ninja turtle stuff and like Thundercat stuff. Okay, now take that again and say you had the kit. No, yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:15 So sorry, robots weren't really part of my childhood. Me neither. I had all action. It was all action figures all the time. Wait, the whole episode hinges on you having some sort of relationship. relationship to robots? I mean, yes, but my relationship to robots is through like obscure movies and maybe my future of potentially piloting one one day. It's an adult baby obsession. It's an adult obsession with Torres. Oh, so you're like a mech? Are you more like a mech guy? You want to get in there?
Starting point is 00:08:44 Kind of. Yeah, I'm kind of more of a mech guy. You know, my dad took us to, remember those old mech warrior arcades back in the day where you could sit in those big things and pilot? I mean, it barely, It barely felt like you were doing anything because it was so complicated. That sounds cool. I've never played it though. They had one at like Navy Pier. It was like $18 for like 15 minutes. It was something crazy expensive.
Starting point is 00:09:07 I bet that little fucking shape you got to press yourself into to play the game is a sweaty, horrible little pit of child and teenage sweat. Just a little like egg crate. You got to muscle yourself in there. You've been listening to a sample of a premium. episode of the QAA podcast.
