Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello and good whatever time of day you are listening to this. For me, it's a beautiful morning. The sun is shining in under some dark clouds. It's just, they're all just sort of strolling over the ridges, like on these little fingertips of rain. And it's always a good day when it rains in Los Angeles. So I am happy. My name is Soren Bui.
Starting point is 00:00:19 I'm a writer for American Dad. I'm the strongest man in my family. I am a camping equipment collector at this point. At some point, I will do camping again. And I'm joined by my co-host, Daniel. Don't call me Dan O'Brien. Daniel, please make your presence known. Don't call me Dan. You know, like the Beatles. That's pretty fun, right? That was good. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:00:40 Thanks, buddy. Thanks for having me. Yeah. It's just a pleasure to finally get you to the show. I'm never on this side of the intro and it's a lot of pressure. I didn't know I was doing this to you all this time. Yeah. You got to think of things the same. Yeah. Thanks to Postmates for supporting Quick Question.
Starting point is 00:01:00 With Postmates, I get all of my favorite foods from the local restaurants in my neighborhood delivered. No leaving the house. Starting point is 00:01:42 purchase. Well, these episodes are a little bit different, so you don't actually have to think of anything to say. We are doing our mailbag episodes. This is number two of two. So really all we're going to be doing today is turning to our audience and saying, you do the fucking work this time. And you all ask us questions and we look through them and we say, okay, yes, I can answer that. And then we come up with some really great, beautiful answers that you will all enjoy
Starting point is 00:02:11 listening to. Trust me. Yeah. And we've already recorded the question and answer part. I think a fun game you could play at home. I've randomly screened some of these in advance and some of them i haven't try to guess when listening which ones are brand new to me i was surprised data is a real moving target because some of the ones that he told me he was going to screen he didn't all right this next one is from uh jerf a jerf type uh if you had to what are three albums oh fuck what are three albums released this year you'd recommend to someone regardless of if the albums are actually top tier material maybe you want to leave someone confused and left in musical thought i don't know that's your decision um that's tough because i am keenly unaware of new music as it comes out, even from the bands I like the very most.
Starting point is 00:03:06 But I have been looking into this a little bit to answer this question. There are two that I have not listened to at all, but these are bands that I absolutely love. And I think that there's no way that these are going to be bad. And I'm now excited to go listen to them, honestly. One of them is Run the Jewels, came out with an album this year rt rtj4 and i would be happily go listen to that run the jewels album and think yeah i will recommend that to you sight unseen i think that'll probably be great another one that i really like is a islands and islands have an album out this year called ilomania uh spelled i s l ol-o-m-a-n-i-a so i think it's ilomania not islomania or islamomania i don't think it's that either but i guarantee that this album will be good
Starting point is 00:03:53 um and then three man i just don't know i'm not aware of music as it comes out yeah i even if i knew music that was coming out i i feel like i absolutely don't know albums like what albums came out in 2021 i don't i i the only album that i i can in good faith say i listened to as an album and was excited about was the the Billie Eilish Happier Than Ever that's a good choice yeah so that's one uh and now I've googled music albums 2021 Silk Sonic that seems pretty cool oh I mean and Taylor Swift I mean I always like Taylor Swift you love Taylor Swift yeah I mean, I always liked Taylor Swift. You love Taylor Swift, yeah. Oh, I could do Open Door Policy.
Starting point is 00:04:48 That came out in 2021. That's the Hold Steady. I love Hold Steady. Well, I'm going to add Red as my third one. Okay. I would do those two albums. I would do Happier Than Ever and Open Door Policy. And then I would make a Spotify playlist of songs that are new to me in 2021.
Starting point is 00:05:06 And I would lie to the person and tell them it was an album and see how confused they get. Okay. When they were like, this is like an instrumental funk. And then this is definitely Raul Esparza from the original Broadway cast of Company. That's one album together? And it would be. Good. All right. Well, then done. All all right this next one is from jacks frost jacks frost says what is something someone could say was a hobby or interest of theirs that would be an immediate indicator that you are not likely to become
Starting point is 00:05:36 friends with that person i love this part i love this question yes as daniel note yeah fantastic question yeah yeah what are what are their red flag interests uh adult disney world fans i would say that too but the problem is that then i have friends who are legitimately are like that like people in my life who i really like that i like who are like crazy into Disneyland. Scott Gardner is one of them. Oh yeah, shit. That's the only bad thing about him. It is a weird thing.
Starting point is 00:06:16 It's a weird thing also because why Disneyland? I've been to Legoland before and I'm like, this should be the place. This is where those weirdos should come. I think the other, one other like friendship red flag uh and i don't i can't make a connection to why exactly um but if someone told me they were like really into um old planes okay uh. Like aircrafts. Yeah. And had like specific knowledge of different planes. I wouldn't like that.
Starting point is 00:06:50 And it's tough because usually if someone's passionate about anything, I love it. Yeah. Woodworking, basket weaving, whatever. If you really care about it, I find it interesting and attractive. It must just be because I met one guy in my life who was super into planes and he sucked.
Starting point is 00:07:05 So now I'm like, oh, that's a type of guy. Plane guy. Yeah. I would say anybody who's super interested in guns. Oh, yeah. And when I say super interested, that's superfluous. Because anyone who's interested in guns is super interested in guns. They're like, it becomes this pissing contest where the minute
Starting point is 00:07:25 you start talking about a gun or anything they have to let you know how much they know about guns yeah it's this weird thing that they it's like part it's a prerequisite to being part of it um also people who love sports cars people who have like a car poster in their room um i don't get you it doesn't mean that you're a bad person um or anything it just we are on such different wavelengths i have no idea what would you see a a car and we have to like pull over and you're like oh my god oh oh i haven't seen this ghost and this ghost hasn't been around since like 2014 i'm like i don't know what that yeah which is the front which is the back i don't know what that, which is the front, which is the back. I don't know what we're looking at.
Starting point is 00:08:07 And then there's one more that's maybe a little bit more of a dark horse, which is the Civil War. People who are really into the Civil War, at some point, I think you'd have to have a conversation with them about why they are romanticizing the South. Because people who are into the Civil War are into it because of both sides. They're not like they just chose the Union and they're like,
Starting point is 00:08:28 and fuck the Confederates, I don't care about them. They're like, no, they had these great generals and they suffered through so much while they were there. Most of the best letters coming home are from the South.
Starting point is 00:08:37 And I'm like, okay. That's true. It's rarely someone who's like, I'm really into the Civil War. I love that the North won. It's never that. No, it's not. There's this romanticized ideal about
Starting point is 00:08:47 both sides, and I would say it tilts towards the South a little bit. Also, you're not going to find somebody who's not a white dude who's into the Civil War. That should be a red flag that nobody else is interested in this thing except for white guys. There's some
Starting point is 00:09:03 privilege there that I think is probably dangerous. oh i love postmates listeners know that i have a trip coming up and so i am not cooking tonight i'm going to use postmates and i am going to get i can tell i'm going to get panda express i'm going to get it tonight because soren mentioned panda express earlier and i haven't stopped thinking about it since I heard those words. That's betterhelp.com slash qq for 10% off your first month. Thanks, BetterHelp. slash qq for 10 off your first month thanks better help all right great question this next one is from uh ava soren do you have a pinterest where you have pictures of some of the projects that you have talked about on the show daniel did dune fans get to you before it came out and now you won't see it i do like that much these people know us yeah i don't have a pinterest but that is really enticing to me because i hate the idea of instagram but i love the idea of showing off the things i made uh pinterest might be just the place to do it yeah uh i did see dune i never
Starting point is 00:12:58 read the book i saw it uh and my reaction to it makes me feel like I'm a child. Because no one was having fun in this movie. And that shouldn't be the thing that makes me like a movie. But like Jason Momoa was having fun. His character had some jokes. And sometimes he smiled. And I was like, Jason Momoa is great. He's having fun in this movie.
Starting point is 00:13:31 Everyone else was so fucking serious and and like i know that there are many parts of the movie other than the time timothy chalamet is having while making it like it's it's definitely big and loud and beautiful and i and i i can recognize ambition uh when i i it. And it's a lot of ambition. And it seems like the director did an impossible thing in making this unmakeable movie. I was just not into it. And I think it was because everyone was so serious the whole time. And that feels like such a childish complaint of mine. But I also, I believe it.
Starting point is 00:14:06 I was talking to my friend Kelsey about this movie with this very specific problem. I was like, everyone's so serious. Everyone is like, Timothy, I know he's like space sand Jesus, but he still feels like too much weight and responsibility on his shoulders. And like, everyone sees everything is so important and high stakes in life or death. And Kelsey was like, well, it and high stakes in life or death. And Kelsey was like, well, it is high stakes in life or death. It is like the fate of the universe. And he is space Jesus.
Starting point is 00:14:32 And there is weight to that. And you have to understand the circumstances. And I feel like we are in a global pandemic. we are in a global pandemic. And for a while, we were in a global pandemic with a president who was an unhinged game show host with authoritarian tendencies and a failing brain. And we still make jokes. We still have fun in the world.
Starting point is 00:15:00 It's my biggest gripe with any big epic sci-fi or fantasy or even not sci-fi or fantasy thing uh even like walking dead apocalyptic thing where where we're supposed to understand that that that things are very serious now and they're and and and they're very bad we're really we're really in hell now i i i can't connect with it i can't connect with the walking dead even though i'm the only person in the world who still watches that show i can't connect with it i can't connect with the walking dead even though i'm the only person in the world who still watches that show i can't connect with it because everyone's so serious and so sad all the time and that doesn't seem realistic to me because again we we live in bad times i famously celebrate the birthday riots there are bad things happening around us and you still make jokes about them or you still even if you don't i'm not saying everyone in dune needs to be cracking jokes but like it is
Starting point is 00:15:53 human to to to find enjoyment in the little pockets where you can find it yes so i think a great example of this is there's a movie that came out recently i don't i won't judge make judgment on whether it's a good movie or not but there's a movie called the king did you see that another timothy timothy camelot movie yeah uh and it is where i think it's about henry the fourth or something like that but it's it's the story of a man who becomes king who then overtakes France and unites France and England under one banner. So this is a very serious movie, a lot of seriousness.
Starting point is 00:16:35 But then there's also one character who is Falstaff, if you're familiar with Shakespeare. Is it actually Falstaff? Yeah, it's Falstaff in it. He's so great in it and he's so funny in a way that like is still it doesn't it doesn't betray the movie in any way but it just adds an extra element of like look not everyone's going to handle this the exact same way yeah and
Starting point is 00:16:57 that having that extra dimension really helps a movie because and certainly the rewatch ability there are movies that I will accept are good movies, but because they're so goddamn serious, I will never watch them again. The Road being one of them. Homesman. Homesman is relentless. And I think it's a good movie. Is that Tommy Lee Jones? Yeah. Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank. I'll never watch that movie again. Those are just the movies he makes now. It's just brutal in a way where I'm like, I can't, I can't sit through that again. That's not a release for me. Here's a scoop for all you listeners. I love socks. They're a
Starting point is 00:17:32 huge part of my life. Bombas makes socks that are comfortable and look great with a wide variety of options. Yeah, I'm punching my recommendation card and we've got one more,
Starting point is 00:19:12 one more little stamp and then this show's never getting watched. This is bad. This is looking bad. Okay, this next one is from Fergus. It says, Dear Soren and Daniel, I hope this email finds you well.
Starting point is 00:19:22 Thank you. It has, Fergus. My partner, I don't know if I should even Thank you. It has, Fergus. My partner, I don't know if I should even try her name. Sangeeta? Sangeeta? Sangeeta. I bet you're right. Sangeeta. And I are both big fans of the podcast and your other work,
Starting point is 00:19:36 particularly After Hours. A few months ago, Daniel mentioned on one of the episodes that he'd been watching old episodes of the British quiz show, Only Connect. This was very exciting to us because when that episode aired, we'd just been accepted as contestants for the next season of the show. The new season started, uh,
Starting point is 00:19:52 started airing a few weeks ago. I don't know if either of you are still actively watching the show, but I just wanted to let you know that if you are, there's a team of quick question fans for you to root for or against, depending on how you feel about your listeners at the moment. Uh, thank you for that out our team our team is the muppets and our first episode just aired last week here's a link to the oh we could watch it our second episode will be the one that releases on monday the 18th of october uh anyway not sure whether this will be of interest to you or not but we wanted to tell
Starting point is 00:20:22 you because we enjoyed the coincidence that daniel was getting into the show around the same time that we were recording our episodes weird synchronicity cool the show is somehow somewhat obscure even here in the uk so we like knowing that there was a chance some of our favorite writers and podcasters might see us wishing you both all the best fergus that's so cool i will absolutely watch that and i'm i'm already humbled because uh i can't answer any of the questions on that show i love it so much and you are on it and you're gonna be answering questions i can't wait to root for the muppets this is very exciting i also i don't want this to sound insulting to our audience it is but i don't want it to sound that way okay i'm always surprised and excited when i
Starting point is 00:21:09 i hear what our audience does in real life because if i'm walking around thinking about them i uh i i forgive me all i think you do is is listen to our podcast and wait for new episodes of the podcast. So when I hear about you like out in the world doing stuff, it's thrilling to me. And I'm sure you all have rich, active lives like Fergus and Sangeeta. And I guess I want to hear about them. It is really nice to, whenever you find out that somebody else is very good at something, you're immediately like, oh, I like that person now. Oh, you're good at something. Oh, great.
Starting point is 00:21:49 You put and you've invested yourself and you've shown an interest in something enough that you've gotten good at it. I like you already. Why? Yeah, I think I would love to watch this. i have not watched a single episode of the show in fact i somehow conflated in my mind thinking that the show that daniel recommended to me was countdown which is not it no is that why you uh yep okay why sean when sean died i messaged you yeah um countdown is a great show You were very sad about that. And I was like, I don't know who this guy is.
Starting point is 00:22:26 And you're like, he's on Countdown. Well, that's the end of this conversation. Yeah, you went silent. Either that meant that you were so aggrieved by what you had learned or it didn't mean anything to you. Yeah. So Countdown is another show, a British show, that's a math show that's really, really great. It's also a show that makes me feel like a fucking idiot. It's a math show?
Starting point is 00:22:51 A math show. There's another one called 9 Out of 10 Cats, I think is what it's called, but it's just the celebrity version of Countdown. It's a bunch of comedians. It's all the same people from Taskmaster throughout the years competing, or the ones that are slightly better at math than everybody else, all competing in this math show.
Starting point is 00:23:10 And it's so good. It's so, so funny and well done. And everybody on it is very good and knows their position they're supposed to play. And I highly recommend it. So if you get a chance, Fergus, go on that show, please. Yeah. Yeah, you're going to have to go on a show. Go on Taskmaster 2.
Starting point is 00:23:33 I know that you can't. I know that it's for comedians. But like I was really into Only Connect for a while and now I'm into taskmaster and, uh, inside job and succession. So go on one of those, please. I couldn't agree more. All right.
Starting point is 00:23:51 That about does it for our mailbag episode. Thank you all so much for, uh, submitting those questions. Uh, we really, we look forward to the mailbag episodes, uh, every year because it's, uh, really genuinely fun for us to, to us to find out what you guys think are interesting. And sometimes when we ask questions that really show that you've been listening to the podcast, it's a nice reminder that people are paying attention and we're not just, this isn't just a phone call with a lot of ad breaks. So thank you again for sending questions. We hope you have a great New Year's and a safe holiday sales event.
Starting point is 00:24:38 We look forward to talking to you again in 2022. Fun fact, 22 is my lucky and favorite number. So it's going to be a good year for me, which means it's going to be a good year for you, the listener. Two is my favorite number. So it's going to be doubly good for me. This is huge because two is your birthday. Yeah. Nice. All right. Later. Bye.
