Starting point is 00:00:00 I was ranked number one. You were ranked. I don't know. Ooh, Austin Rivers. Austin versus Draymond. The clip. Unload the clip. Versus Draymond versus everybody.
Starting point is 00:00:11 He was right, though. Austin or Draymond? Austin. They were both right. I just, my thing with Draymond is if this is your last time with your coach that helped get you in the Hall of Fame, why do that on the way out? I think the person who knows the best regarding that is probably, Steve Kerr himself. That is the voice of Russ Dorsey Marci already is here too. Marshall Harris is in.
Starting point is 00:00:35 Let us thank our guests, Julia Poe, who we had on Mike Floreo. We're happy to have him on as well. And thanks to CHSN for the use of the audio of the introductory press conference for Bryson Graham. Thanks to the birthday boy, Tyler Beaterbaugh, Tyler Birthday Baer, Ray Diaz, Bradiezer for helping us out. Thanks to Max Curtis, Jacob Stutz, and Connor O'Donnell. and Cody Westruland. And our transition is brought to you by Torque Codings, high-performance coatings for your home or business. Torc, T-O-R-Q-Codings.com.
Starting point is 00:01:12 Hi, Mark. Fancy seeing you here. It is very odd what is happening here right now. And let's get the audience up the day down. What is happening right here? So I woke up and I was like, hey, everybody has to tell me what's going on today. What is my life? No, I'm kidding.
Starting point is 00:01:25 That's not what happened. I never demand anything of anybody to wake up except myself to get out of bed. Maybe you should. But I woke up and then all of a sudden it was like, do-da-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d. Like some sort of wacky theme music that isn't been here. Mark's not on your show. I'm like, wait, what's happening? It was like, Spiegs is sick.
Starting point is 00:01:42 And I was like, oh, no. And then Gabe lost his voice. Oh, no. Right. Gabe already, by the way, filling in for Lawrence Holmes, who is enjoying his vacation. So that is how we have come up with this manifestation of Spiegel and Holmes today as Russ Dorsey and me, me, Mark Grody, fill in for technically, technically, or I should say not technically, but for Gabe Ramirez and Matt Spiegel, technically for Spiegel and Holmes. So, and then another layer to this is that if we are doing this by occupational history,
Starting point is 00:02:13 you would play the role of Lawrence Holmes because you guys are both Bears reporters, and you would be playing the role of Matt Spiegel because you guys are both baseball people. Okay. And there's a fitness challenge that also is part of this transition. Marshall's looking at it right now. This fitness challenge has been a big part of my life. So I think it's time we update the people. So we had a 30-day fitness challenge with Russell Dorsey
Starting point is 00:02:36 was kind enough to invite me because he knows I care about my fitness. And the last time I did this, I didn't win because I got hurt. We all know how it went down. It was not good. He was really excited at the beginning. And then I got hurt. But now I'm not hurt. So I'm good.
Starting point is 00:02:50 I'm clean. I'm out here running like Russ runs on the leg front. I'm surprised I haven't seen you recently. These in the Oakley sunglasses. I was out there the other day. Yeah, but you go now when I'm at work, so that's probably why. Yeah. Yeah, but today was the last day of the challenge.
Starting point is 00:03:04 You get 98 points based on three factors. Exercise, 90 minutes. Calories burn, six times your weight. That's the max. And then 14 standing hours. I just completed my 14th standing hour. I sent a little message to the group, and I said I'll holl it shot later. Good for him.
Starting point is 00:03:22 Russ said he was on a plane so he couldn't. Yeah. No, that's great. I'm glad Marshall is fulfilled right now. Made it through a full challenge healthy. When I introduced him to, it's a fitness group chat, and the challenge happens with the people within the chat. And I said, you know what?
Starting point is 00:03:42 You know who would be great for this? My guy, Marshall. And so how long have you been in the group now? Six months? Maybe five months? Yeah. Five or six months? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:51 Half a year. Yeah. And so, yeah, he, the injury that he sustained, and I know I make fun of Marshall a lot when it comes to his injuries. But I'm glad he made it through this one. Like he looks spry. He's running eight miles on the river. It's good that Marshall is out and healthy and getting his fitness. I feel great.
Starting point is 00:04:10 I feel as good as I felt in a long time. I've enjoyed keeping up as a fan as a spectator of the fitness challenge. You know, we see Marshall walk and take his laps and take his steps every break. And then I'm like, well, what about jumping jacks? How do those count toward the fitness challenge? And then what are the benchmarks that you have to have? You know, what are the numerical values? So I have spent time with you all with this fitness challenge as a fan, as a supporter.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Hey, I saw Russ coming in hot today, man. We practically walked in together. Why do you always do this with your show co-hosts? I'm walking close. We're getting close to the building and I'm walking. And all of a sudden, in my peripheral vision, I just see somebody come up and stay. at me on the side. And so I have to make the decision, do I keep walking or do I turn? And so I said, I'm going to keep walking. And the person was still there.
Starting point is 00:05:00 So I'm like, now I have to look at the front. And it was grody. Yeah. So I was a groaning move. I should give like, and I was keeping up pace with him. He was. I was, I had the brisk walk too. Were you staring walking? I got low. I'm trying to do this. I'm trying to describe it as best I can. This is for the Twitch audience too. I kind of got like this. I kind of crouched down and I'm just looking up at it. I'm like a creepy person. I'm like, I'm like, sir. I'm like, sir, and he was holding his peripheral. You are right.
Starting point is 00:05:25 I'm like, I had the AirPods in. I did not want to look at Grody. He was City Russ is what he was. He was a man who has spent time outside in Chicago. Oh, yeah. I'd have done the same thing. Can I tell you guys, I was walking fast. Mark can attest to that.
Starting point is 00:05:40 I've been told I am a very fast walker. Oh, sure. And I think I didn't, I just think of it as walk. Aren't we all, if you live in the city and you walk to most places you go, you're going to naturally become a brisk walker. Yeah, because winter exists. That's why. I have a test.
Starting point is 00:05:57 Is that where that starts? Yeah, because in the winter, you're trying to get wherever you're trying to go as quickly as possible. And that just carries over into your normal walking at that point. Here's your test as to whether or not you are a fast walker. Are you annoyed by people at airports? Yes. If the answer is yes, you are a fast walker. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:16 I was just at the airport over the weekend a couple of times. You're right there. The etiquette is there is no etiquette. There is no standardized rules. And listen, I don't know who needs to hear this. But you can tell. You can tell who doesn't walk a lot at an airport. Oh, because they're just sort of looking around.
Starting point is 00:06:36 Or they just have no understanding of the flow. Yeah. You know, they don't walk on the right side. God forbid you just stop. Oh, that's it. That's it. That's my middle. That's my one. That's my one.
Starting point is 00:06:47 You can't just, it's like stopping your car in the middle of traffic. That's the one rule. it is just like traffic. Just veer off the road slightly, hold to the shoulder, and then stop. That's my only rule. Like walking down like a state street or Michigan Avenue, I get it.
Starting point is 00:06:59 There's tourists. There's people from the suburbs of people. There's really stubborn people who just walk on the left side and then look at you like you're crazy. And I'm like, you're going to have a not fun walk, sir. You can walk slowly. I have to deal with that unfortunately.
Starting point is 00:07:10 I don't like it. But if you walk slowly, it's okay. You cannot stop. That's the only rule I feel entitled to. It's bad. Here's why that doesn't work here specifically. we're at Prudential Plaza, we're close to
Starting point is 00:07:24 Millenium Park, Grand Park. There's too many tourists looking up. A lot of tourists. And I can't be mad at the tourists who've never been to Chicago looking up. I get mad at them. You can get mad if they stop, though.
Starting point is 00:07:36 The city I get... In the middle of the sidewalk? No, no, no, no, no, you can't stop. Outside of the ridiculously ignorant, indignant people who walk on the left side and think it's everybody else's problem. Y'all are just stupid and annoying. But the rest of the people,
Starting point is 00:07:48 and I never call people stupid like that. But then, But in the meantime, at the airport, just veer over a little bit and then stop. The airport. That specific problem with the airport, that's just about people being from all over the place. And if you don't live in a metro area and you're not used to walking, if you're used to be in your car and you don't walk, you're just never walking amongst a lot of people, you don't understand that. I don't like the leisurely stroll unless I'm on, if I don't have anything to do and I'm on the lakefront or something like that. What do you even have a leisurely stroll?
Starting point is 00:08:20 We have them. They're just faster. After my runs, I usually walk back to my house. Okay. And so that's when I get my leisurely strolling. But you're on the side. You're in the walking lane, right? Because there are a lot of runners out there.
Starting point is 00:08:35 But I'm very much a walk or move with a purpose. Right? And I think that's being a former athlete, too, of my coaches always say, hey, on a hop, let's go. And so that's how I think of, like, movement, like. Yeah, football practice. Basketball practice, you get in trouble for walking. You're supposed to run to the next whatever. Move the purpose.
Starting point is 00:08:54 So you guys are probably like me then. So I think we've established that we're all frequent city walkers. We all walk with a certain amount of pace. When you guys walk with people who are not like that, do you find yourself all having to hold back a little bit or whoever you're with saying, hey, slow down a little bit. Yes, that's how I found out I was a fast walkers. People are like, why are you walking so fast? I'm like, I'm just walking.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Do you know what I do? I walk toward the middle because then they can't veer to the left. Oh, the veer. Hearing is back. I hold the line. Word of the day. I try to give an appropriate amount of sidewalk space on the other side because I know I am probably the best at walking in a straight line.
Starting point is 00:09:29 A text says, what about the people that walk four wide on the sidewalk? Straight to jail. Straight to jail. That's a felony. You have to allow to be passed both coming towards you and going by you if you're leisurely. To answer your question, if I'm walking with a long of boys, you better keep up. You better man up and keep up.
Starting point is 00:09:48 Now, if I'm walking with a young lady, I'm going to go in her face. And see, that's when you find out that Why are you walking so fast? Yeah, I adjust because I already know what they're going to say. You know what I had a girlfriend that was from out of town and I knew she wasn't going to be down for the, she's going to be wanting to leisurely stroll everywhere we go. Yes.
Starting point is 00:10:06 Ah, okay, so we have another texter who asks, do you complain about people on the moving walkway at the airport as well? You got to go to the right. No, you know, you know what I do? I walk faster on the non-moving walkway. try to beat the people. Yeah. And then I'm like,
Starting point is 00:10:20 yes, it's not my fault, you're slow. And I lift my suitcase and go up the stairs and then I just like get up there while all the lazy people are watching me move on the stairs.
Starting point is 00:10:29 That was a good question, Texer. If you're at O'Hare, and people know when you're going from Terminal B to Terminal C and you have the long walkway with the pretty lights above. The etiquette is you move to the right
Starting point is 00:10:41 if you're not walking on the moving pedway. Escalators too. And then you keep going. Yeah. Like to just stand in the, middle or to the left. It's like the highway. If this is the passing lane, move over.
Starting point is 00:10:53 Oh, I hit him with the Steve Rogers. On your left. Like straight up. It's like a biker. That's what a biker does. I got to assume that most people have headphones and stuff in. Oh, I say it loud. I'm ignorant.
Starting point is 00:11:07 I'm that dude. On your left. I do think, though, I don't complain about the moving walkway as much of it because there's other space to walk. Like, it's not like you're taking up the entire space. Like there's space on the left of the moving walkway that's just space that's not moving. If I'm coming up on the walkway and I know there's people. Yes, you can see it up before you get there.
Starting point is 00:11:25 I'm going to go around. Yeah. As long as there's space, I'm good. But when there's no space, what are you all doing? Textor, this is probably a question for Layla, since she's using the great word, veering, by the way. Thoughts on walking slash veering at a festival. At a festival for 200, Layla.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Your thoughts on that. I give a little more leniency to a festival. Yeah, festival's not the same. Yeah, you kind of, unfortunately, it can be annoying depending on how intoxicated somebody is. Yeah, I try to always give space for people to move. But no, it's, a festival is not really a thoroughfare. And yeah, here's the difference between a festival and what we're talking about. Festival, if you're going to be going from point A to point B, you're going to find the edge of the festival.
Starting point is 00:12:08 You're not going to be trying to walk straight through a group of people who are at like a concert stage or in line or something. That's your fault then, right. looking for the edge at that point to get by everybody. Oh, now we've got another one. What about people who pull their shopping carts in the grocery store, like they're walking their dogs straight to Jane? That's more of an aesthetic, right? What about the people who bring their dogs to the grocery store,
Starting point is 00:12:29 even though it says, don't bring your dog in? We've lost that. We've lost the dog. Trust me, I love dogs, but we have, it's on. And I'm not talking about licensed service dogs. I'm talking about people who think they're more important than everybody and that their dog is clean. No, it's not.
Starting point is 00:12:44 It's shut. Shout out to 3-1-2. Veer to Lear, people. Yes. Veer to Lear. Ooh, that's good. Some of you guys come up with really good phrases. It sounds like basic etiquette, but it's not basic.
Starting point is 00:12:59 I hate to tell you this. It's just not. I wish, but it's not. Right. That's the whole point. Like, it should be. That's what etiquette is. Do you silently give props to people with good walking etiquette?
Starting point is 00:13:12 I always, internally, you don't say anything. but yeah, in your head, you're like, oh, thank you. There's an agreement in the city. Sharing is caring. Share. I think it's just like a look. One city guy knows another city guy or gal. You just kind of give the look.
Starting point is 00:13:24 Like, yeah. Like, I know when to follow a certain. Like, if traffic is tough and I see somebody who's in the same sort of mode as I'm like, I'm following that guy. You know who that guy is? That guy is Marshall Harris sometimes because this is, by the way. I've walked home from, because we both live in the same area, Marshall and I've walked home probably a dozen times. It's a clinic every single time. Every light, every proper side of the street.
Starting point is 00:13:47 No, no, no, no, no, no, come on, Groddy, come on. Trust me, trust me. He's a bossy walker. He takes, he takes like three minutes off every walk. Marshall's like, let's go this way. And you're crossing diagonally across Michigan and I'm like, hey, I don't know. Nobody's coming until somebody is.
Starting point is 00:14:05 He's a violating. I know. I've gotten hit by CCA. No, no, I know which turn lanes are on and everything else. and more importantly, the runner's etiquette when you're on the lakefront, do you avoid or give eye contact to a fellow running and running towards you?
Starting point is 00:14:20 I always try to give eye contact, give them the nod. Hey, you're out here. Somebody out here. Locked in, though. And if they're locked in, that's fine. I wear the reflective shades. And so you can't always see my eyes,
Starting point is 00:14:33 but like I usually like to give up, but you can see somebody if they're super locked in or if they're like catching the scenery. But if they're catching the scene, I'm like, yeah, let's go. Do you run this sunglasses? on?
Starting point is 00:14:43 I can. If it's sunny, it's just it's never sunny when I run. Anytime I've seen Marshall out there, he's always has
Starting point is 00:14:50 just his face, yeah, his hat and his face. He's the only person and God bless you like that you can work out without music. That blows my mind. Oh yeah, I can't.
Starting point is 00:14:58 I got no problem with that. I can't work out without the music. Why don't you step away from the? Well, actually, you know what, let's do this. Lela, I heard you,
Starting point is 00:15:05 and I was playing along with you guys earlier today when you were talking about Marshall's words. Now, my words get criticized a lot, but really Marshall's words are his... Oh, when I said talking feces?
Starting point is 00:15:17 Yeah, yeah, feces. And then, of course, what's your other one? We had somebody say them. Deficate. The words that he uses to disguise the actual words are worse than the actual words. A hundred percent. I feel like I'm in front of a nurse. And then something bad has happened.
Starting point is 00:15:32 And I'm in the doctor's office atoning for something that, like, occurred in my body or my life or something like that. I'm using the scientific words. That's because your mom is a doctor. Yeah. Like, I'm using the scientific words. when I was a kid and I was at my grandmother's house now my grandmother, grandfather,
Starting point is 00:15:48 dad's parents, they are both teachers and my cousin punched me in the man region which at that time was the boy region because I was a kid
Starting point is 00:15:59 right in the gym and I was like he hit me in the balls he's like oh we don't say that we don't say that he hit you in the scrotum that was a kick in the nards
Starting point is 00:16:08 hit you in the scrotum I was like oh okay that's actually technically correct I got it. I was like maybe eight years old. Sounds worse. Hit him in the ding ding. So ever since then, I'll just take the scientific term. Do you know where I think that comes from actually? And you guys may or may not be able to back me up on that.
Starting point is 00:16:24 I think hit him in the ding ding comes from. Eddie Murphy? Thank you. It's like the little skit. Yes. They see Eddie at the age of like nine being hilarious. And then the crowd opens up and there's, I'm getting goosebumps talking about this because I love Eddie.
Starting point is 00:16:42 Like the crowd opens up, and there he is in his purple. Yeah. Doing wrong. Why do I picture Eddie always having a mustache even as a small child? There's like one with him. It's great mustache. Really? It is.
Starting point is 00:16:54 It is. You have a great goatee. I know you were fishing for a compliment. Yes, you do. You do have a solid goatee. You know, I have no connectors. That's why I can't go full Russell Dorsey on the people. It took me.
Starting point is 00:17:06 I was 30 before my beard connected. So it took a long time. Maybe I'll try. It took a long time. I don't have family members who talk about no facial hair growing in. That's not a thing. Fair. That's fair.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Some of us are genetically advantaged. When I grew up, that wasn't an advantage as a woman. When I grew up learning about this, I was like, you're a guy and you can't grow all your facial hair, and then I just stared because I was in shock and awe. Shock and awe is a good place to be. Sometimes. Sometimes it's... The cups are shocking awe.
Starting point is 00:17:40 Comebacks 17 out of 20 Shock and all I love the Although I'm not as shocked As I used to be What was it 5 on it You guys were saying
Starting point is 00:17:49 Like what is what is a lead That is not safe For the Cubs to come back from You could settle that 6 I think Maybe a little carried away But I feel you A touchdown I'm sorry
Starting point is 00:17:58 Were you not with me When it was 6 to 1 And they came back from a 5 run deficit To start this whole thing That's 5 That's 5 all it Oh so you took Oh is you set the overruner
Starting point is 00:18:07 Got you So 6 is the number I would be concerned Five, I'm good with you. I saw it. Okay. Okay. They were down six one.
Starting point is 00:18:13 It does the fire. I did understand the spirit in which you guys were. There was no second during that game last night where I didn't think the Cubs were going to win. Do you know what else is all our yelling at the TV paid off? You know, when we were yelling at the TV, destroying our lovely time at Circa with being serious about a baseball game. Being serious in a command of must have looked hilarious. In front of clients yelling at the TV rather than enjoying the pool and the sunshine outside. You're eating fresh pineapple and whatever you wanted to drink.
Starting point is 00:18:43 They wasted on that trip. They wasted the solid, extraordinary effort of the second best starting pitcher in town. And to see that happen to Shoda, that made me upset. We had Davis Martin right now as tops. Don't let anybody tell you that yelling at the TV doesn't pay off. I mean, David, like, he, I don't know if he's maxed out now, like with the 10 strikeout zero walk game or if it continued. Like, it's kind of a crucial point for him.
Starting point is 00:19:09 He can just stay here. It's either going to start to come down or he's like having some crazy, unbelievable year. He's stirring the pot. I want to know if it's, don't we all want to know if this stuff is sustainable? Do you think Davis Martin is sustainable like that? I just call that the Mark Grotty question. Is it sustainable? I do like to talk about sustainability.
Starting point is 00:19:26 I'm a big sustainability guy. Isn't that what we all want from Chicago sports? I'm a sustainability guy and a sample size guy. We're starting to see more than enough sample size from Davis Martin saying, hey, he's pretty solid. How dare you talk to me this way about Davis Martin? I can't believe you, groie. No, I'm just asking.
Starting point is 00:19:45 And I also said it could go either way from here. Like, is this, is he having a magical year, or does he start to come back down to Earth? And I don't, I'm not saying he's going to come down to Earth. It's unfair to expect somebody to have a 167 ERA. You know what I mean? What's a duration? Okay, like, is he going to have a 260 ERA this year? Forget the one something.
Starting point is 00:20:06 260 would be great. If he finishes with a three ERA. That's a really good year. But that's what I'm asking. Is that what we are heading towards with Davis Martin? Or is it like he's the guy who's having the fast start that comes down to Earth? If you want to set the ERA at 3 for the over-under, I'll take the under on this season. I love hearing that.
Starting point is 00:20:22 And I'm not even pushing back. I'm asking the question. Why do I feel like this show is going to be a lot of that type of discussion? We are going to have some of that discussion. We do. Yeah, I have a fun baseball segment where I'll just list teams until Groats thinks there's a team better than the Cubs. That is at 3 o'clock on the show today. That's a lot of teams.
Starting point is 00:20:38 Yeah. Are you going to start with the bottom? I'm not going to do all 30, but I'll do like 12. My first team will be the New York mess. Well, I know what he's going to say on that. She should do it by payroll. And so I'm not allowed to say anything, right, until there is a team. It's the social media IG.
Starting point is 00:20:55 Talk when you hear a team that's better in the Cubs. I'm going to list as many teams as possible and see when Groot says, okay, I think this team's better in the time. So I can't do the whole, like, figuring it out out loud in my head. Like, well, I'm not sure, but the Padres might be a little bit better in the Cubs. but I'm not. He has to go with his gut. You don't believe the Cubs are worse than the Padres. No, the Cubs are better than the Padres right now.
Starting point is 00:21:14 For sure. It's a preview. No, there's no doubt. There's three teams that's going to say. We're going to talk Cubs and play Russ's game. I'm looking forward to that and scared about that as well. Just to keep the baseball theme going today, we're going to have John Morosi on at 4 o'clock. Yay.
Starting point is 00:21:28 From MLB Network, talk Cubs and socks and obviously baseball at large. So we'll talk to him. Cody Westerland was at the Bryson Graham press conference today. That is the new Bulls boss for people who are not used to hearing that name, Bryce and Graham. So Cody will give us his insights on that. Check this out at 525. I will perform with Russ Dorsey a Bears hit.
Starting point is 00:21:52 There will be a Bears hit at 525 on this show. We are in a safe two-word zone right now with the Chicago Bears. So there will be a full Bears hit at 525. When we return, though, to get this show starting, something happened at the Bryson Graham Presser today that we believe to be unprecedented in Chicago press conference history. So we will talk about that right away here on this edition of Spiegel and Holmes featuring Russ Dorsey and Mark Grody on the score.
