So this story all starts with this woman.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Her name's Jennifer. And Jennifer is about 48 living in Texas. And Jennifer, she has a problem. She isn't really happy in her marriage. And she's been married for 15 years and I guess it's just not going well. But one day in 2020, she's at home and she gets a message on LinkedIn. And it's this guy that she used to date back in high school and college. The guy's name is Darren.
Starting point is 00:00:59 Now, Jennifer and Darren, they haven't talked in over 30 years. He lives in a different state now, Tennessee. But they start talking and she tells him that she's not happy with her life and he tells her that he's not happy with his life. And pretty quickly, they hit it off. And soon they connect more and they start texting and emailing and talking over the phone. And over time, they start getting closer and closer. And she starts sending him gifts and like money to support him. him. Now eventually, Jennifer wants to be with Darren. Problem is, she's still married. So she decides
Starting point is 00:01:37 not to get a divorce, but to murder her husband and collect his $629,000 life insurance policy. Oh, but she's not going to commit this murder herself. No, no, no, that's not her style. Instead, she's going to try to manipulate Darren into doing it. So she starts lying to Darren and telling him that her husband is abusive and Darren believes it. Then she decides to take it a step further and send him a message pretending to be her husband. And she makes it sound like he found out that they're having an emotional affair and now he's going to punish her for it, aka abuse her. And this of course upsets Darren. She even looks up stock photos of injuries and uses old photos of herself from a car crash several years earlier and sends them to him like look how much he injured me.
Starting point is 00:02:27 And so Darren gets even more upset when he sees this. Then Jennifer decides to escalate things even more, and she creates a fake email account under her husband's name, and she starts sending abusive emails to herself that she can then forward on to Darren. And so anyway, their long-distance emotional affair carries on. And Darren tells her that he wants to report all of this to the police. But Jennifer gives him some bullshit excuse. She tells him that she really doesn't want her daughter to find out what's happening.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Plus, if her husband finds out, it'll just make everything worse for her, and he'll get even more abusive. And so, Darren doesn't report this to the police. And all this continues to carry on for a while. Jennifer making up stories, telling them to Darren, and him getting more and more upset. But, despite how upset he gets, she wants him to come out and directly say that he wants to kill her husband. She wants him to think it's his idea. So she pretends to be her husband and she emails Darren and says that he's going to lure her into their hot tub and have like five guys essay her. And from this she would basically drown.
Starting point is 00:03:40 And Darren's like, oh shit! And he starts freaking out. I mean, he doesn't want Jennifer to die. So he hits her up and he tells her that she needs to get the police involved. And once again, she bullshuts him and she says she doesn't want her daughter to know. So finally, she and Darren start talking about how he's going to kill her husband, and they plan the whole thing out. Then one night, Darren drives from where he lives in Tennessee all the way down to Texas to Jennifer's neighborhood. And he gets to her house, and there's like a vacant house next door, so Darren hides out in that backyard, in the dark, wearing a COVID mask.
Starting point is 00:04:19 And in that backyard, he just starts watching Jennifer's house, waiting for the right. moment. And early the next morning, he sees Jennifer and her husband leave their house to take their dog for a walk. So they're out on the sidewalk. And this is the moment he's been waiting for. So boom, he runs up on them from behind and he pulls out a gun and blam, blam, blam, he shoots her husband. Then he knocks Jennifer down to like rough her up a little. And he duct tapes her hands to make her look like she wasn't a part of all this. They're trying to stage this to look like a robbery. Well, as you already know, guns are really loud, and several neighbors heard the gunshots, and one of them comes outside, and she sees Darren, who is standing over the body holding a gun.
Starting point is 00:05:07 And Darren's like, oh shit, because he knows he's been spotted and he runs away back to his truck, and he drives all the way back to Tennessee. Now eventually, police show up to the crime scene, and they talk to Jennifer, and she tells them that they were just walking their dog when this random guy in a mask, came out of nowhere and started shooting. And so police started investigating. And they are immediately suspicious of Jennifer's story. I mean, supposed robbers shot her husband in the head several times and he didn't even steal anything. But they don't have any hard evidence against her or anyone.
Starting point is 00:05:42 Then Jennifer goes and she tries to claim the life insurance money that she has on her husband, the $629,000. While she waits for it to be approved, she keeps Darren posted. And they talk about how they can use them. money to buy a house together in Tennessee and live happily ever after. Her neighbors even feel bad for her. So they start a go-fund-me. And they raise about $60,000 to support this grieving widow. And they give it to her and she uses it to buy some prepaid credit cards that she then gives to Darren. She also uses it to buy him plane tickets and a big screen TV. But what she doesn't use it for is she doesn't use it to pay for her late husband's funeral. She leaves the $6,500 bill entirely unpaid. And if that isn't bad enough, she then goes on the news and talks about the murder as if she wasn't a part of it. I heard running behind me and I turned around and all of a sudden somebody just started shooting at him.
Starting point is 00:06:42 And it turns out she's actually pretty good at playing the victim. Oh my God. If you know what happened, I need that for closure. I need to make some sense out of this. It's been horrible. Devastating, I teeter between completely heartbroken and completely devastated every day. It's been awful. Regardless, police don't really have any evidence against her, so she might actually get away with all this. Until. Until she makes a big mistake.
Starting point is 00:07:16 While she's spending all this go-fund me money, the police are still investigating her. And they ask her if she'll allow them to download the contents of her phone. And for some reason, she's like, sure. So they start looking through the contents of her phone. And while she had long deleted any messages she had with Darren, their forensic data shows that around the time of the murder, she had exchanged tens of thousands of text messages with someone in Tennessee. That someone is, of course, Darren.
Starting point is 00:07:49 So they start investigating him. And they get a search warrant and they search his phone and he had not deleted all their text messages. So now police can see that these two were in some kind of romantic relationship. They also discover that Darren drives the same kind of truck that was seen fleeing the area after the shooting. So now they know he's the killer. And so they go to Darren's house and bam, he's arrested. Here's his mugshot. Also, bam, Jennifer gets arrested too.
Starting point is 00:08:20 Here's her mugshot. And ultimately, Darren is found guilty and he's sentenced to 62 years in prison while Jennifer actually gets life in prison.
