What would make a doctor go crazy and start trying to kill other doctors?
So this all starts with this guy, Garcia.
And Garcia is around 28 during this time, living in Omaha, Nebraska,
and he's a resident at Crichton University Med School.
And here's the thing about him.
He's not a very good resident.
Like he likes to harass the other students there,
and he's adversarial and aggressive towards them and his supervisors.
He's basically just kind of an asshole.
In fact, one attending doctor gives him a poor performance review, and he gets all mad and he threatens to sewer.
So he's that kind of guy.
But then, one day, in 2001, he takes things way too far, because he finds out that one of his fellow residents has taken two days off to go take some important exam.
And Garcia, he doesn't like that he has to pick up the extra workload in this resident's absence.
So he calls the guy's home phone, and the guy's wife picks up.
Garcia tells her that the hospital needs her husband to come back to work immediately.
So then the resident's wife gets really worried, and she goes and she tells her husband
that the hospital needs him to come in.
And later, she ends up calling the department he works in to confirm what's happening.
And the department tells her, no, that isn't true.
The hospital doesn't need him back.
And eventually, the department in charge of the residency finds out what a department.
Garcia did, and they decide they've had enough of his shenanigans. And boom, they terminate his residency.
But Garcia, he isn't going to let that stop him. He just goes and he applies for residency somewhere else
at the University of Illinois Medical Hospital. And he gets accepted there, and so he does his residency
there, and he applies for a state medical license, and of course he doesn't disclose that he was
fired from Crichton Med School. So he lies on his application and it works. The state of Illinois
actually grants him the medical license. And so he continues working at the hospital for the next two,
three years. Until, according to the Chicago Tribune, the school ends his contract in 2004 for
substandard behavior, whatever that means. Then in 2007, he moves down to Louisiana. And there,
he starts a psychiatry residency at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center.
And after a bit of time, he applies for Louisiana medical license, and once again, he leaves out the part
about getting fired from previous residency programs. But this time, things don't go as smoothly.
Because the Louisiana State Medical Board actually looks into his background, and I guess they
contact the pathology department at Crichton Med School, and the pathology residency director
is this guy, Dr. William. And so, Dr. William somehow lets them know that during Garcia's time
at Crichton, his residency was terminated due to his shoddy behavior. And so the state
medical board of Louisiana decides to reject Garcia's application. And because his application
got rejected, he gets kicked out of the residency because he couldn't get his medical license.
So now Garcia is pissed off. He feels like this isn't fair. And he knows Dr. William is the one
who gave him a bad reference. And now he wants to get revenge. And here is where the story gets
dark. So Garcia goes online and he's somehow able to get Dr. Williams' home address. Then he gets in
his car and he drives from Louisiana all the way to Omaha. And he gets to Dr. Williams' house,
but Dr. William isn't home. Instead, it's his son and a housekeeper who are inside. So Garcia
knocks on the door and someone, likely Dr. Williams' 11-year-old son, answers it. And that is when
suddenly Garcia pulls out a knife and boom, he stabs him. And the boy unfortunately dies from this.
Then Garcia attacks the housekeeper, and the housekeeper unfortunately dies as well.
After that, he gets back into his car and he flees the scene.
And pretty quickly, police start investigating these two stabbings,
and they question everyone, including the neighbors.
And one neighbor tells them that he saw someone in a silver Honda CRV around Dr. Williams' house.
Along with that, a couple of neighbors are able to give police a dog.
description of what Garcia looks like. And from that, they're able to put together a composite
sketch of the suspect. This is actually the sketch. However, the sketch ultimately doesn't help,
and they don't get any information that they can use. And from here, the case goes cold,
and Garcia gets away with double murder. And so, some time passes, and it's now 2009, and he moves to
Terra Hote, Indiana. And because he somehow still has his medical license from the state of Illinois,
he's able to get contract work at a federal prison as a physician. And that's fine in all,
but this is just a contracted position, and Garcia wants something more permanent. So he applies
for a full medical license through the Indiana State Medical Licensing Board, and they grant him
a brief temporary license while he applies for his permanent one. So in 2000,
He applies again for his permanent one.
And the Indiana State Medical Licensing Board contacts Crichton for references, and they
communicate with this guy, Dr. Roger.
Dr. Roger is the chair of the Department of Pathology at Crichton.
And Dr. Roger not only co-signed Garcia's bad reference letter, but he's the one who
detailed everything that happened.
So of course, Garcia gets rejected again.
And this is where he gets so mad that he comes.
completely loses it.
And he decides he's going to kill everyone involved
in sending those reference letters
because he believes they're the ones ruining his life.
And so he targets one of the faculty members at Crichton,
a doctor, a doctor who had written him up while he was there.
Same doctor he threatened to sue for writing him up, by the way.
So he gets on the internet and he gets this woman's home address.
And in 2013, he drives all the way back to Omar.
to her house. And lucky for her, she's not at home. But he starts trying to force his way through
the back door, and her burglar alarm starts going off. So he leaves. Then he drives to the home
address of Dr. Roger, the guy who gave him a bad reference last time. And he knocks on Dr. Rogers'
door. And Dr. Roger answers. And that is when Garcia pulls out a gun and blam, blam,
He shoots him.
Then he pulls out a knife and he starts stabbing him.
And obviously, Dr. Roger doesn't survive.
And along with that, Dr. Rogers' wife is there.
And he also stabs her multiple times.
And she doesn't survive either.
Then he flees the scene.
Later, police come to the house and they investigate these two murders.
And coincidentally, investigating this is the same officers
who responded to the murders at Dr. Williams' house years before.
And when they see the way that Dr. Roger and his wife were killed,
they notice that it's similar to those two previous murders.
Then they find out that minutes before Dr. Roger and his wife were attacked,
someone had also tried to break into the house of the other Crichton doctor.
And they believe it's all related,
and whoever is behind these attacks has some kind of connection
to the Crichton Pathology Department.
So they start asking around about residents from the department who might have had issues with Dr. Roger and Dr. William, and eventually Garcia's name comes up.
And so they investigate him.
And that is when they discover that he drives a Honda CRV, the same type of small SUV that was spotted around the scene of the first murders back in 2008.
Then they investigate his cell phone records and his credit card purchases, and this places him in Omaha, a
around the time of the murders.
And so, bam, they arrest Garcia.
Here's his mugshot.
And later, he goes to trial, he's found guilty,
and he gets sentenced to death.
