Starting point is 00:00:00 This is one of the craziest stories I've ever told. Now, this all starts with this woman, Candy. And Candy is 23 years old, living in a very small town in Canada called Kipling. And Candy, she likes to party. She likes to have fun. In fact, she has a bit of a reputation around town for it. But one night, in 1992, Candy gets into a fight with her boyfriend. And she's so upset over this fight that she goes to the local hospital where her friend works
Starting point is 00:00:28 so that she can like vent about it to this friend. But when she gets there, her friend happens to not be working that night. However, that is when she runs into this guy, Schneeberger. And Schneeberger, he's a doctor there. The whole town knows him and they love him. He's delivered nearly everyone's baby in town, including candies, because Candy has a kid. So she trusts Sneberger and she respects him just like everyone else there does. So Candy, she tells him,
Starting point is 00:00:58 got into a fight with my boyfriend and I'm all shaking up. And Schneeberger, he says, well, let me give you something that'll calm you down. So he takes her to an exam room and he gives her a shot, a drug called Versed, which is a strong sedative that also happens to cause amnesia. And immediately, this sedative hits her and candy goes numb and she starts losing all control of her muscles, like she can't move, she can't even speak. And she starts going in and out of consciousness. But then she feels like something horrible is being done to her. The next morning she wakes up and she's still in the hospital and she's not sure what happened and she confronts Sneeberger. What the hell was that drug you gave me?
Starting point is 00:01:43 And Sneeberger says, why? Did it give you crazy dreams? And this is when Candy realizes something is very wrong. Like maybe while she was unconscious, she was essayed by Sneeberger. So she drives to a neighboring town, to the RCMP office, to report this crime to the police. And she undergoes a medical examination, and they also test her underwear, and they find a man's DNA on it. And so, Candy, she starts telling people around town that Schneeberger drugged her and assaulted her. The problem with that is that Schneeberger is the most respected doctor around. Well, she is a party girl who works at a local gas station, so people aren't really really.
Starting point is 00:02:28 believing her. But Schneeberger, he wants to clear his name. So he willingly agrees to do a DNA test. And he goes and he gets blood drawn from his arm and there are like police witnesses there. So everything is legit. Then they test his DNA against the DNA found in Candy's underwear. And it's not a match. And when Candy finds this out, she is shocked. Like how could she have been wrong? This must have been some mistake. Like someone must have had tamper. with the blood sample and a year goes by and it's now 1993. And Candy, she's still adamant that this happened, like she's still going around town telling everyone that Schneeberger essayed her and that his blood test was likely falsified and she keeps pushing for police to force him to do another test. But again, Schneeberger, he wants to clear his name, so he happily agrees to do another DNA test.
Starting point is 00:03:25 So he goes in to do another DNA test and he goes in to do another DNA test and he's He gets more blood drawn from his arm, and police are there to monitor the whole thing, from the needle going into his arm to the sample going to the forensic unit. So there is no way someone could tamper with it this time. And again, they test his DNA against the DNA found in Candy's underwear, and again, it's not a match. So now, poor Candy has accused a beloved doctor of SA and was proven wrong, not once, but twice. And so another year goes by. And it's now 1994. And by this point, police have essentially
Starting point is 00:04:06 closed this case. Like, there's nothing more for them to investigate. And poor Candy, she's gotten a bit of a bad reputation over this in some circles. Like when certain people see her around town, they like glare at her and they mean mug her. And when she's standing in line at the grocery store, well, people will point at her and say, well, that's the liar who tried to destroy Dr. Schneeberger's life. Some people even come into her job at the gas station that she works at, and they yell, Sle-Sle- and all kinds of stuff. Not only that, but Schneeberger's wife, this woman, her name's Lisa.
Starting point is 00:04:39 Lisa obviously lives in that town, too, and she is super pissed about the accusation. And when she sees Candy around town, she glares at her as well. And she'll tell people that Candy made the whole thing up to try and get money out of us. And so at this point, poor Candy does the only thing that she's. she can really do. She moves. I mean, she was born in Kipling. Her home is in Kipling, and everything she's ever known is in Kipling, and yet she has to relocate. So she moves to a different city, but she hasn't completely given up. She goes and she hires a private investigator to help her out. And so one night, kaboom, this private investigator breaks into Schneeberger's
Starting point is 00:05:24 car to see if he can find something else with his DNA on it. And he looks under the seat and he finds an old used chapstick. Then Candy takes the chapstick to a private lab and pays to have it tested for Schneeberger's DNA. And sure enough, they find Schneeberger's DNA on it and this time it's a match for the DNA found on Candy's underwear. However, there's a problem. This evidence can never be used in court because the private investigator broke into Schneeberger's car without a warrant. So now Candy knows that he's guilty. She knows what he did to her that night, but she still has no way to prove it and the case has already been closed. But then something crazy happens. A few years go by and it's now 1997. And one night Schneeberger's wife, Lisa, is at their home and she's there with her
Starting point is 00:06:21 teenage daughter, who is Schneeberger's stepdaughter. And the daughter is, she's acting kind of sad and a little weird that night. And she walks over to Lisa and she tells her that her stepdad, Schneeberger, has been essaying her. Apparently he had been sneaking into her room at night, drugging her, and then assaulting her. So Lisa goes and she searches Sneberger's home office and there she finds a box and she opens it and it's filled with condoms and sedatives. including Verset, the same drug he used on candy. And so immediately, Lisa goes to the police, and she reports this, and they start investigating. And once again, Schneeberger has to take a blood test to see if they can match his DNA.
Starting point is 00:07:07 But this time, he doesn't volunteer. He's forced to. And by now, police suspect that he's been manipulating his blood tests. So during this test, they don't take a blood sample from his arm. They take it from his finger. And boom, his DNA sample matches the DNA found in his stepdaughter's case, and it matches the DNA found on Candy's underwear from years earlier. So how did Sneeberger pass those two earlier blood tests, even while the police were monitoring him the whole time? Well, remember, the guy, he's a family doctor, so he always has easy access to patient's blood. So what he did was he took some blood from a random male patient, then he's,
Starting point is 00:07:51 took a small plastic tube and he filled it with the other man's blood and he surgically implanted that tube inside his own arm. So every time a technician came to draw his blood, Schneeberger guided them to the exact spot where the tube was planted. The needle went into the tube, pulled out someone else's blood, the technicians sent it to the lab and the lab said, there's no match. Regardless, now police have caught him and so bam, Schneeberger is arrested. And I don't have a mugshot, but here is a picture of him.
Starting point is 00:08:25 And so ultimately, he goes to trial, and he's found guilty, and he gets sentenced to six years in prison, and he is stripped of his medical license.
