So why did this priest suddenly flip out and kill a nun?
So the priest's name is Father Gerald.
And Father Gerald is 41 when the story starts, and he's living in Toledo, Ohio.
Father Gerald is a chaplain at a Catholic hospital, and he's very popular.
People in the community love him.
And one day, in 1980, he's giving a Good Friday sermon in the Hospital Chapel,
and since Good Friday is an important day of the year for Catholics,
one would assume that he would give this big sermon.
But, for whatever reason, Father Gerald cuts this service a little short.
Now, most people in the chapel probably don't even notice.
But one person definitely does.
Her name is Sister Margaret.
And Sister Margaret also works at the hospital chapel, and technically she's not a nun,
she's a sister, whatever, regardless, she and Father Gerald do not get along.
They never have.
So Father Gerald cutting the sermon short pisses her off.
And it makes her sad.
Like, she's crying and visibly shaking from this.
This is a big deal to her.
So eventually, she goes and she confronts him.
And she says how she's disappointed and how he handled the service.
And this turns into a pretty heated argument.
Now, this confrontation is the last straw for Father Gerald.
He is tired of Sister Margaret's bullshed.
He's tired of her questioning him.
He's tired of her second guessing him.
leadership skills, and he decides it's time to finally get rid of her. So he waits. He waits for her
to be alone. The next morning, Sister Margaret is in the sacristy, and she's preparing the space for
mass the next day, which will be Easter Sunday, which will be a big day. Meanwhile, Father Gerald
grabs his novelty letter opener that he has. It looks like a small sword. Here's actually what it
looks like. So Father Gerald goes to the sacristy where Sister Margaret is, and he quietly
sneaks up behind her while she's setting up. And suddenly, boom, he grabs her by the neck,
and he starts strangling her. And he strangles her until she stops moving. But Father Gerald
isn't done yet, because it seems he actually wants to humiliate her as well. So he starts staging
the scene to make it look like someone essayed her. Then he takes that sword letter opener he
has, and suddenly he starts stabbing her with it. And he stabs her in the shape of an upside-down
cross. Because he wants this whole murder to look satanic, I guess. That way when people ultimately
find her body, they'll think a bunch of random Satanists did it and not the local priest. I don't know.
Anyway, after that, Father Gerald leaves. Then a different sister walks into the room and she finds
Sister Margaret's body and she freaks out. And she goes and finds two police officers in the hospital,
so they come over and they start investigating. Now, the detectives who are investigating,
this, they're not dumb. I mean, they immediately suspect Father Gerald. I mean, he did have a well-known
contentious work relationship with Sister Margaret. Plus, they search his living quarters, and they find
the sword letter opener, and they're like, yep, this must be the murder weapon. So the detectives
bring Father Gerald in for questioning. And during this session, Father Gerald, he starts bullshitting
them and saying, some random guy came into confession, and he was confessing that he was the one
who committed the murder. And the police, they start pressing him on this. Like, who? And Father Gerald
suddenly like, uh, never mind, I just made all that up. So this is not going well for him. And the
detectives are like, okay, this Father Gerald guy, he definitely did it. The next day, they
bring him back in to question him again. And they question him for hours. And at this point,
they feel like they're about to make a breakthrough. Father Gerald is definitely about to confess.
But then suddenly, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, they hear a knock on the door, and the interrogation is interrupted.
And in walks the deputy police chief, who is a devout Catholic and a high-ranking Monsignor of the church.
And these guys immediately shut the whole interrogation down.
And the Monsignor escorts Father Gerald right out of the police headquarters and lets him go.
Not only that, but the deputy police chief confiscates all the detectives' notes.
from their interviews with Father Gerald.
So now the detectives have nothing.
And of course, these detectives working on this case,
they are super pissed.
But it's 1980 in Toledo, Ohio,
and the Catholic Church there is essentially untouchable.
I mean, they're not going to let you make them look bad
by arresting one of their priests.
And so ultimately, they end up transferring Father Gerald
to another church in Toledo,
where there are no consequences for him.
And after that, the investigation is shown.
shut down, and the case goes completely cold.
Until something crazy happens.
22 years pass, and it's now 2002,
and a daily newspaper called the Boston Globe
starts publishing stories exposing a bunch of petos in the Catholic Church,
and they discover that a lot of repeat kitty didlers had long been protected by the church.
And so within about a year, this scandal blows the fuck up.
nationwide and thousands of people start coming forward basically saying yeah I was abused by
church clergy too and the church covered it up and this ends up damaging the reputation of the
Catholic Church like permanently and people go on to affiliate the Catholic Church with this
for years but also in 2003 specifically a 41 year old woman in Toledo comes forward
and she testifies in front of a Catholic Diocese review board and she tells them that when
she was young, she had been sexually abused by a few of their priests, and one of the priests
she names is Father Gerald. And so this Catholic diocese is like, oh my God, that's terrible,
we'll look into this. But then they debate about it, and they have a little back and forth,
and they decide that this woman isn't credible and that their priests did nothing wrong.
However, at some point during all this, that woman had written a letter detailing all of the
horrible things those priests did to her. And someone involved with the Catholic Diocese
forwards that letter to the county prosecutor's office. From there, the county prosecutor's office
starts looking into all of these priests and they find that one of them, Father Gerald, had
been suspected of murder all the way back in 1980. And so the cold case unit starts looking into all
of this. And they go over all the evidence and they start questioning why their main suspect at the time
was just allowed to walk away right before he was about to confess.
Now, it's 2004 at this point, and Father Gerald is still living in Toledo.
And he's still a priest for local parishes.
He's still a chaplain for local hospitals and nursing homes,
despite all the horrible things he's been accused of.
So police find him, and they bring him in, and they question him about this murder that happened 24 years earlier.
So Father Gerald starts yapping, but a lot of his responses are inconsistent.
He also admits, again, that he lied back in 1980 about someone confessing to him about committing
the murder.
But he says he only lied because the detectives back then were pressuring him.
And so all of this seems very suspicious.
But they don't have enough evidence to convict him of a murder that happened more than two
decades ago.
So it looks like he's going to get away with all of it a second time.

Until they decide to exhume Sister Margaret's body.
And so they dig up her grave and they perform an autopsy on it.
And this time they're able to match
a stab wound that punctured one of Sister Margaret's bones to the sword letter opener thing
that they found in Father Gerald's living quarters back in 1980.
And so, bam, Father Gerald is arrested.
Here's his mugshot.
And so ultimately, he goes to trial, and he's found guilty, and he gets sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
