And he wants one so bad that he's willing to do evil things to get it. Now, the guy's name is Joe, and Joe is 29 when all this starts, and he's living in Tennessee.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Now, here's the thing about him. Joe loves cars, and he really wants his own car collection. But there's a problem. Joe works as a manager at a local shoe store, which means he doesn't get paid enough to buy himself a whole collection of cars. So one day in the 90s, Joe decides to change careers, and he becomes an insurance agent. Maybe this will be the job that will finally let him make enough money to buy whatever cars he wants. So he starts selling insurance, and he does okay at it, and he learns everything there is to know about the business. And then around 1997, he opens his own insurance business.
Starting point is 00:01:27 Nothing big, just, you know, helping other people set up their life insurance and annuities and stuff like that. Now, it doesn't take too long for Joe to realize that he's still not making enough money from all this to buy the car collection that he really wants. So I guess he decides that the only thing left to do is start scamming people. So when a client comes to him wanting to set up an annuity, he will take their money and instead of sending it to the insurance company like he's supposed to, He sends it straight into his own bank account. And then he'll lie to the client and tell them their whole annuity has been set up. And this works. And it works well.
Starting point is 00:02:08 So he keeps doing it with client after client after client, scamming them out of their funds. And over time, all this stolen money he's sending to his own account starts to add up. So he begins spending it on himself. And this dude is living the life. He's going out to expensive dinners, he's hitting up the casinos all the time, he's going on nice cruises, he's buying himself all kinds of expensive antiques. But most importantly, Joe is finally able to buy a bunch of cars and start building the car collection he's always wanted. And pretty quickly, he gets himself eight cars, including three corvettes and some hummers and some Porsches.
Starting point is 00:02:52 Meanwhile, he continues to scam his clients through his insurance company. At one point, he turns the whole thing into sort of a Ponzi scheme. When his clients ask for their money back, Joe simply pays them using money from other clients. And so, he just keeps all this going. And eight years go by. And it's now around 2008. And by this point, he's stolen around $780,000 from his clients. But it's around this time that things start to get complicated.
Starting point is 00:03:27 for him. Because Joe actually has a wife, this woman, Tina. And Tina has no idea that Joe's been scamming people all these years. She just thinks his insurance business is doing really well. So it's no surprise when she starts thinking that Joe could maybe use some of this money to buy them a new house. She's wanted one for a long time. I guess she just doesn't like where they're living. But unfortunately, every time she brings it up to him, he shuts her name. immediately. And he's like making up excuses. He's telling her that they can't get a new house. They have other things they need to spend the money on. But the thing is, Joe knows that they could get a new house if they wanted. He doesn't want to get a new house because he doesn't want to
Starting point is 00:04:12 apply for a loan. He knows that applying for a loan would mean that they have to allow lenders to dig through their finances. And the second anyone digs through their finances, his entire insurance scheme will get exposed. And he's not about to let that happen. However, Tina doesn't want to give up on this idea. She's determined to get a new house. So she keeps pushing him. And that same year, 2008, she finally decides that she's done waiting. Whether Joe agrees or not, she's going to get a new house somehow. And that is where the story gets dark. See, Joe understands that. Tina really wants a new house and that he can't get one without risking getting caught. And so he starts to panic. I mean, he doesn't want to go to prison? Who would?
Starting point is 00:05:03 He then comes up with this insane plan. He decides he's gonna murder his wife Tina. That way she'll no longer push him into getting a new house and all his secrets will stay buried. So he gets to work on this plan. He starts pretending that he also wants a new house. He's like, sure, honey, let's go get one. And they go house hunting together. And eventually, Tina finds the place that she loves. And Joe tells her that good news, he's already found a buyer for their current house, and that he'll handle everything and close the deal himself.
Starting point is 00:05:38 And Tina's like, great, thanks, dear. But in reality, Joe isn't talking to any other buyers. That's not part of his plan. He's just trying to keep her placated. Then, one day, Tina's at home, and she and Joe, get into some kind of argument. And this argument gets heated, like really heated.
Starting point is 00:05:58 And that is when Tina decides that she's had enough, and that she's going to leave to go cool off and run an errand. So she heads to her truck, and just as she's about to get in, suddenly Joe appears behind her, and pow, he places a plastic
Starting point is 00:06:14 bag over her head, and she struggles, but using all his strength, he holds her there, until he suffocates her, and she dies. After that, he wraps her body in a blanket and he places it in the back seat of her truck. Then he drives it to a street
Starting point is 00:06:33 that's a few miles away from their house and he parks. Then he immediately goes over to a friend's house to do some work on a car. That way, he has an alibi. Later that night, he goes home and he starts calling several of Tina's friends and he asks if they've seen her,
Starting point is 00:06:51 because, you know, she's missing, and he's like pretending to be all worried and stuff. Now, these friends, they've obviously not heard from Tina, and she's not the type to just disappear on everyone, so immediately they know something's wrong. And so they begin searching for her. And of course, the police are now involved. Two days later, police find Tina in the backseat of her truck, and she apparently still has all her jewelry on,
Starting point is 00:07:18 so police know this wasn't just a robbery gone wrong, this was a planned murder. Meanwhile, Tina's friends and family start noticing that Joe, he's been acting strange lately. Like, he's not acting like someone who just lost his wife. First, he starts getting rid of all of Tina's belongings, her clothes, her shoes, her Bible. Then, at the funeral, he's just way too happy.
Starting point is 00:07:42 Like, he's giving people thumbs up, and he's playing inappropriate music, and it seems like he just can't wait for the funeral to be over. Regardless of how guilty, he's acting, police don't have any real evidence against him, so they can't arrest him. And it's starting to look like Joe might actually get away with all this.
