Starting point is 00:00:09 Taking an up a notch. It's the Leaf Hour edition that just finished, Sammy, and now we go national. Did I make you nervous, Sammy? Well, people get really pissed when they start talking about that. Nick Caprio, it's Justin Bourne. Sammy McKee, we are live on Sportsnet. Sportsnet, no, not SportsCen of the fan.
Starting point is 00:00:31 Yeah. We are Sportsnet. Oh, it is 590 to the fan. See, last year we didn't do 590 the fan in Toronto on our national. hour. Did we? Yep, we did. We did? Oh, yeah. I don't know nothing on nothing. I just sit here until it's my turn to top. All right. You're good. Spotify, Apple. I, I butchered this thing. Listen, you've been having a great year so far. They all can't be cost those. You know where I'm not going to screw up? This hour of Real Kippenborn brought to you by Bet365. That's the important one.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Yeah. I will say, I put up the Jets jersey today. Big one for them tonight, hosting Colorado on Amazon on tonight. But they announced their heritage jersey. Yeah, what do you think? I think they're spectacular. And I put up this jersey in studio if you're watching on SportsA Plus or on YouTube or wherever you're watching this on TV and for the exact reason
Starting point is 00:01:23 that... To shame them? Yeah. The downgrade from what they announced today to that is just it's out of this, it's one of the most classic jerseys you could possibly have. That is it's like Bobby Hall Anders Heatherg? No, way before.
Starting point is 00:01:42 Pre-Hawruch? Pre-Hawr-Chuck. I'm going back. See, I'm old. Well, you've just got to be more context. That was a cool jersey. Was it always beloved? Was it always like, hey, people like this jersey?
Starting point is 00:01:57 Because I don't, like, seeing it now, I'm like, oh my God, that thing is gorgeous. I don't remember as a kid being like the jets. I do remember it standing out for me. Okay. I do. But you also wore those white Capitol sweats. which were the best ever.
Starting point is 00:02:10 And the Navy Whaler's sweater, which was a sweater. Leaves wasn't bad either. Rangers wasn't bad either. God, you were doing an all-time jersey collection. Should I bring a couple in? Well, probably. Yeah, they might disappear, though.
Starting point is 00:02:21 Yeah, I know. Somebody's got some sticky fingers around here. Dicey. Gary Galley, Gary Galley, former NHLer, color analyst for sports says will join us as we go around the National Hockey League.
Starting point is 00:02:34 Gary, once again, thanks for joining us. looking forward to a spectacular season, especially with you as a guest. How are you? I'm doing great. You guys look in shape. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:02:45 No, no. Short and training camp, buddy. Yeah, you're here. We're not even close to game shape. What are you seeing out of a shortened training camp? You don't strike me as a guy that loved our training caps in our era, the six-week one. I remember my first training camp, in L.A. in 1984
Starting point is 00:03:08 and I was coming out of college so we were used to like we did a lot of biking, a lot of working out in the gym. I mean, we were, you know, it was the college way doing things. And I got to L.A. and we were going down for a workout and we got down there and this girl comes out in spandex and a headband, the headband,
Starting point is 00:03:27 the whole bit with her ghetto blaster, and they start doing aerobics. And I was like, I was like, what the hell just happened? And it was like, here you see Marcel Dion, and he's going and doing all this aerobic stuff. And I couldn't believe it. So it's come a long way since then. And players now are in fantastic shape.
Starting point is 00:03:50 They stay in shape all year round. I remember Russ Kippert. I don't know if you were like this too, but I used to, when the season ended, I would take the first month off completely. I just would take it off, spend time with the family, try to heal some bangs and bruises. and then I'd slowly get into it. And then the last month of the summer, with a bunch of us used to skate here in Ottawa, all the local NHL guys,
Starting point is 00:04:11 and that kind of was my preparation to get to camp. And it always seemed to work. And the testing always went well. And so I'd never really concerned myself. But the players today certainly way more streamlined, more focused in on specific things that are hockey related. You know, guys like us,
Starting point is 00:04:27 we didn't fit in European suits, you know what I mean? Yeah, it does feel like it's a 12-month-old. month business right now for the players. Yeah, it's a little different. So coming out of the gates here, we've been, you know, we're going to talk about our Canadian teams and we know that you know them all so well. Who have you been most impressed with out of the gates here up in Canada? Probably not Calgary, but I'll let you pick from the rest.
Starting point is 00:04:52 You know what? I think everybody's been kind of thinking that Winnipeg was going to have a real sluggish start, you know, obviously with no hellabuck and a lot of changes that I've gone on there in Winnipeg and just the way, you know, it's hard to deal when your, when your best player isn't there and doesn't want to be there, right? And Ottawa dealing with the same sort of thing. And I think I tip my hat to both those teams for coming out and having the starts that they've had. You know, I think Toronto was a wait and see. I think they're a team that, you know, that is going to find their way with a new coach and a new young star player. They're introducing into the lineup.
Starting point is 00:05:26 So, and some new players. Montreal is a team that has made very few changes. really, I think one addition of Crider, they would have liked to have probably gotten Marchenko. They didn't, but they're kind of going along with the same group of guys. So sometimes, you know, the start for them, I don't think is looked as good as I thought. But Ottawa and Winnipeg for what they're going through, I tip my hat that they've had a pretty good start. Ottawa looked really good in the first two games. Last night against Detroit, I don't think they looked as good as they looked in Boston the night before, but certainly I think they're a team that I feel like is ready to step up.
Starting point is 00:06:06 I'm one of those people that doesn't believe. I know Kachuk's gone. I know he's a big loss. I know he's a good player. I said in the broadcasts the other night, I think they've got plenty of leadership. I think they have guys who can score. They have a good coach that teach them systems and they know how to defend. They're getting better and better at it.
Starting point is 00:06:23 And Allmark, if he can play like he started the season and like he, you know, fraction, like three quarters of how he played in the first round. If he could stay like that for the year, I think this team has a really good chance of being in a playoff spot and maybe getting through a round. And I think that's something that
Starting point is 00:06:42 a lot of people felt like when Kachuk left wouldn't happen. But have they lost a bit of their grit, little sandpaper? Yeah, certainly, right? He was a lot big part of that. But I think Ottawa's going to be fine. And I do like the way Winnipeg has kind of started without Hellebuck. You're watching and listening to Gary
Starting point is 00:06:59 Galli, former national hockey leaguer, color analyst, does a great job for sports net. So, gals, players asking to be traded, players holding out for contracts, nothing new. We saw it. We lived it. We had teammates do the same thing. You know, I'm not sure if you did throughout your career have moments like that. But it's been around forever. Yet the feeling today, whether we're talking about scenarios in Detroit or Winnipeg with Helibuck,
Starting point is 00:07:29 It's taken on a whole new level, and it starts with, I guess, the fans and voicing their displeasure over guys changing their minds. What do you make of it back then compared to today and what we're seeing in social media per se? What I liked about last night was they booed larkin on the introductions and when he touched the puck. But once he started to play and he had, you know, the game that he, had, they were actually cheering him. And when he was picked as a star, they cheered him. So good on the Detroit fans. You know, you have the right to voice your displeasure and they're not happy with him for
Starting point is 00:08:10 sure and the fact that he wants out. But at the end of the day, they do recognize that he's playing hard and he's trying to help his team win. And I think they respect that. So that's good to see it that way. But nonetheless, you know, we were part of the game kipper when things were so much in the owner's favor that we were fighting. and fighting and fighting and fighting.
Starting point is 00:08:30 I feel like a lot of my career was spent fighting to try to get things better for the players and the players association. And, you know, obviously with the help of Bod Goodnoe and some of the guys that were part of the NHLPA, you know, group that were helping to improve things, we had to fight and we lost some games with lockouts and strikes. But at the end of the day, we found our way
Starting point is 00:08:52 and we found a deal we thought was fair. And I just feel like maybe it swung a bit. bit too far in some areas where it's starting to go the other way where I certainly don't I never worry about what a player makes you know the player makes good money makes makes way more than we did that's okay I have no problem with that but I don't think the no trade clause the way it was put into these deals was meant to to work the way it's working a no trade clause was meant for a player to want to be in the place stay in the place and and not have to move family and be around.
Starting point is 00:09:31 And then all of a sudden now the no trade clause is being used as a vehicle to move to a better team or a Stanley Cup contending team because you don't feel like your team is strong enough or moving in the right direction. Now, there could be other things that happen that, you know, that I'm not aware of, that why a player wants out of a certain team or whatever. But I just feel like in some areas, things have swung a little too far. And I think we're going to have to get a grip back on it. because I don't think it's good for the game to have players just wanting to leave
Starting point is 00:10:03 because you just feel like they want to win a Stanley Cup. I mean, heck, I wanted to win a Stanley Cup too. It would have been nice to leave and go to a team and win, but it wasn't that easy then now because a team can't afford to have a guy making that kind of money and not showing up or not being happy or not wanting to play on a team, there's nothing you can do about it. Now, all the conspiracy theorists that these guys all met at the Olympics and decided they were going to do this and leave their teams.
Starting point is 00:10:31 And I don't know. I don't know if I buy into all that. I just think that everybody wants to win a Stanley Cup. And I think now there's a lot of people in these guys' heads that are telling them, hey, you don't have to stay here. You can move. You can get to a better situation. But, yeah, I think the no trade clause was not made for that.
Starting point is 00:10:48 It was made for showing loyalty to an organization and the organization showing loyalty to you. And I think that's kind of not worked out that way. recent anyway. It is pretty twisted. That's a great way to look at it. You know, the main players in the spotlight this NHL season are a lot of guys who are off the ice that we're talking about here, but also in Toronto this year, Gavin McKenna comes to a pretty big media market and, you know, slow first few games has a great night last night. What have you seen over the course of your career for first overall picks and the pressure they face and maybe how that's changed with today's young players?
Starting point is 00:11:26 You know, I think so much of it is how they're handled. I mean, some of them are can't miss. They're just can't miss. You know, you look at, you know, the Gretzky, or not a first round pick, he came from the WHOA, but, you know, Mary Lemieux, you look at Sidney Crosby, you look at Connor McDavid. These are can't miss guys.
Starting point is 00:11:44 Celebrini may eventually fall into that. But a lot of first overall picks, maybe art of that cloth, but they're going to be really good players, super talented, and they're going to make a difference on their teams, but maybe they're not going to be generational. And sometimes it takes time to know if a player is going to be generational or not.
Starting point is 00:12:02 We can talk about Sydney and we can talk about Mario and we can talk about Connor and the likes of those guys and say, yes, they're definitely generational players. Celebrini's got some work to do. But for a guy, you know, coming in like McKenna into a market like Toronto, it's a real beast. And it's up to the Toronto Maple Leafs and the people to make sure that they give him the right direction. break him in the proper way, protect him from some of the noise. The most important thing is that he keeps his confidence.
Starting point is 00:12:33 He trusts himself and his talent. And sometimes when you get on a team and you're a first round pick and we know about the Lottons and the guys that are picked high and then get on teams and it just kind of, it's a disaster and the player just disappears. And it's amazing. Such a talented person just couldn't find success. But it does matter who's around you.
Starting point is 00:12:53 you know, you know, you look at the teams that are now boarding these players with players, with veteran ex-players and guys who have just retired, or maybe a guy who's an older statesman on the team, because they trust him to make sure they keep the kid, you know, in the right place, in the right place mentally, you know, don't get too high, don't get too low, stay focused on what we're doing, you know, it's never that bad. And I'm sure McKenna was thinking, man, I might never see. score and it's only been two games, you know, but he's putting that kind of pressure on himself.
Starting point is 00:13:27 So you need somebody to take that pressure off him. And it was nice to see him get the first goal last night and a goal score's goal too. I mean, he just stopped, turn, pivot, boom, in the back of the net. So it was a pretty goal. And he gets a helper too, you know, kind of one of those helpers where you give it to a guy early, he does all the work. But still, he gets some production. He feels good about himself. And then hopefully that helps moving forward. But it's really important that you have people surrounding a guy like that to protect him from himself. Gals, is there anyone, any name that you either played with throughout your career or even a name that, you know, you've covered as a broadcaster that you could say, maybe if they did a
Starting point is 00:14:12 better job insulating him or talking about the things that you just mentioned that they didn't do and maybe it stunted their developments. somewhat, you know, because it's not, there's no guarantees on any of them, including Sid, when you're playing such a physical game and, you know, you're taking an 18-year-old teenager putting up against men. Yeah, I mean, you look at Bedard. He's a good example of a player that comes in and how many coaching, yeah, how many coaching changes already, player changes, leadership changes, all those changes.
Starting point is 00:14:52 he is the leader, right? All those changes that are going on affect him and affect how he prepares, how he gets, you know, and the Chicago Blackhawks, I'm sure, had a plan for him and in order for him to become the player they want him to be or they need him to be. Now, strapping a sea on a sweater doesn't make a person a good captain. That's something that a player learns, and it's something that sometimes just organically comes from who he is. But not every person, who wears the sea in the league is a good captain. And I'm sure you know that guys. Like some guys get to see because it's supposed to be on the sweater of that person.
Starting point is 00:15:30 But you rely on three or four other guys as your leaders, more maybe so. So I'm not saying that's the case in Chicago. I'm saying the plan has always been for probably him to eventually wear the sea and step forward and be the leader of that team for a long, long time. But I know there's just been a lot of stuff happening there. And again, that's just something off the time. top of my head. I don't really have any like factual information of things that, why things aren't going as good as maybe they thought or I thought they might be for him. But I know he's
Starting point is 00:16:03 injured now and I'm not talking about that. But I mean, it's not been like something that's been awful, but I'm saying, you know, I expected, I think when I watch him, I expected a bit more. And I wonder if just all the changes that have happened in Chicago as they're trying to find their way has maybe been hard on him too, right? Yeah. That's a, that's a, that's a, Yeah, that's an interesting look at Connor Bardard for sure. And so this is kind of related to what the Calgary Flames are doing right now, where to me, you know, you just can't strip a team down to the studs anymore. It's too hard to get talent in this league to rebuild it back up.
Starting point is 00:16:39 Like you can try to win and still lose a whole lot of hockey games. The Flames have really torn it down. They've committed to it. You know, is the hole too deep here? Like, what kind of rebuild timeline are you looking at? I know that they're not as bad as their first three games look, maybe. But gals, they're pretty limited right now. Yeah, I would agree.
Starting point is 00:17:00 I think they certainly look like they're going to be a team that's going to struggle to compete. And that doesn't mean they don't have real good players on their team. It's just sometimes the mechanics of a team or just the talent that the team has as a whole just isn't strong enough. It's not strong enough four lines deep. Because as you know, you've got to play four lines now. It's not strong enough to defend. And the goal tending is inadequate enough. So when you look at all those three things, it's a recipe for disaster, right?
Starting point is 00:17:35 And it's kind of started out that way. So it's not to say that it can't turn. It can't get things turned around. Obviously, when things start like that, I think you have to look at how you defend and how you try to keep pucks out of your net and let the offense just come on its own. but you can't you can't keep chasing down goals.
Starting point is 00:17:53 If you're giving up too many and you're giving up goals at bad times, it really deflates the balloon quickly, and especially if things don't start out well. I look at Montreal, and I look at the, they've allowed 15 goals in three games. And, you know, and I look at how they're playing, and they're not playing terrible,
Starting point is 00:18:11 but they're not playing as good as I thought they should or would have come out of the gate. So that's a team that I go, okay, is this just a rough start after a real good solid year last year where they took a really good run at it? But, you know, it might take them a bit of time to get moving, but they got all the pieces. And to me, is that the last team that has taken it down to the studs kind of and has rebuilt? I mean, if you look back at what they did, they had a plan. Maybe it didn't go all the way back to the studs, but it certainly went pretty deep to the foundation.
Starting point is 00:18:45 And they started rebuilding that team. and now they're just starting to see the benefits of that in the last couple of years. And now this year, the expectation level is through the roof. So for Calgary, I don't think there was a huge expectation level. So there might be disappointment to how they're playing, but they don't have that heavy expectation level sitting on top of them. So hopefully they can get back. Like you said, it's never as bad as it seems,
Starting point is 00:19:09 and it's never as good as sometimes it seems. So hopefully they could find a way to get a win under their belt and get some wins. kind of just forget about the start and get some, the goal tender there, I think, is going to be a big part of it. Gals, I would imagine you'd substitute Calgary for Vancouver and pretty much
Starting point is 00:19:27 say the same thing. But, you know, they found a way to get a couple of wins early here. Lost a one goal game to Vegas and Mani Mahaltra's got Patterson finishing checks, man. I mean, it's not a bad start.
Starting point is 00:19:44 Yeah, it's how you lose too, right? Like, it's like I know it's hard to convince a team. When you get on a bus or a plane at the end of a night and you've lost, it's hard to convince a team. There's no such thing as a good loss. You know what I mean? There's just not.
Starting point is 00:19:56 Players aren't wired that way. But you could be losing games and still playing well. And that's where it's up to the coach to make sure he maintains, whether it's in the video, whether it's in his personal chit-chats with players or his leadership guys. Hey, guys, we were doing a lot of good things here. Hey, we haven't got the bounces. But if we keep playing this way,
Starting point is 00:20:17 come and we'll get them. So you got, you know, your coach and your leadership group is a big part of that. So, I mean, hey, look, if you're going to start out against Edmonton, you want to play them in the first few games, because normally they're not good in the first few games this season. So they played Edmonton in game one. They got the win.
Starting point is 00:20:33 Didn't go so well in game two, but I think for Vancouver, they're going to be in the same kind of spot as Calgary. And I had somebody asked me last year that if the question was very simple, will a Canadian team ever win a Stanley Cup again? That's how simple and the question was,
Starting point is 00:20:50 and direct it was. Do you believe a Canadian team can win a Stanley Cup? And I was like, I had to think about it. I'm thinking, well, yeah, I mean, look how good Montreal's coming along and Edmonton's got two of the top five best players, you know. But when you start to dissect through the teams in Canada and what they're up against with the U.S. dollar and players wanting to go to places where the tax situation,
Starting point is 00:21:15 situations are better and the weather is better and all the, you know, you start to really look at the burden that the Canadian teams have to build and get good players that want to stay and play and try to get to it, you know, to the Stanley Cup level. And, you know, it was a question I never even thought about, but someone broached me with it and I really didn't really have a good answer. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how hard it is for Canadian teams in the league now to, to vie for a Stanley Cup. It's going to be very difficult. It is. And there's just this, like, crazy amount of parity in the league that, you know, you kind of hope that there's one team has a good year where the luck goes their way.
Starting point is 00:21:57 But, you know, I think yesterday, Kip, you were like, you know, who's like the favorite this year? We were just kind of like joking about it. It's like, this is the first year. I can't even give you one name who I think is the favorite in the league. You have five or six that are good teams, right? Like, Dallas to me is a team that I have picked. for a while to be right there in the hunt
Starting point is 00:22:18 and they've disappointed me. Not that they, I'm sure they're disappointed too, but I'm saying like they just never really could get to the level to take it and take a run at it. Colorado has these incredible seasons, but then don't look at all like themselves. And last year, obviously they ran into some injuries and that really nailed them down.
Starting point is 00:22:37 But, you know, there's just so many teams that in a seven game series, I'm not sure I look at one team and say, I see this team rolling right through. Like Carolina really rolled right through. And I said this the other night, if you asked Carolina who was the toughest of the four teams they played, they might say Ottawa in the first round. And that's crazy that the team they played in the first round, they felt was the tougher match than anyone they played after. And that's, that's, I mean, I did that series with Ottawa, and Allmark was fantastic.
Starting point is 00:23:14 The senators played extremely hard, and the games were really close, and they were physical and nasty. And at the end of the day, Carolina won four straight. That's how good they were. So when you look at Carolina, you say, okay, what's the template? The template is four lines that are relentless. That's the template if you want to win or guarantee yourself a chance to win. Good goaltending, solid D, and four relentless lines. and Montreal got a flavor of that in the semifinals.
Starting point is 00:23:45 They know now. They know how far they're away when they see Carolina. They go, okay, we're a good team and we're in the semifinals. But this team, when you look at it, we know the difference now, what we need and how far we need to go. Florida is a team that has got a ton of talent on it, and they know the recipe and they know the Klinco to get to the Stanley Cup and win it. But can they stay healthy? Now Barkoff and Marchand and these are serious injuries to key components on their team. You know, their goaltender is not there anymore.
Starting point is 00:24:18 So there's a lot of changes there. So how are they going to handle all those things? I agree with you. I think this is a year where we're going to need maybe 40 games before we get a look at, you know, which teams are for real and which teams are just going to be, you know, moving up and down like a roller coaster. I want to stay on Ottawa for a second because you have a really good pulse on on that team. Good start.
Starting point is 00:24:41 Two division wins right off the bat and lose to the team that probably you shouldn't have. But overall, your sense of them coming together post Brady Kachuk and, you know, Allmark's right on schedule
Starting point is 00:24:54 with tweaking something, you know, in the first week as well. I like, like the leadership of this team still, even though Brady's gone. I think Shabbat is a good choice. I think Sanderson would have been. been a good choice.
Starting point is 00:25:11 You know, I, you know, I, I just feel like they've got good leadership. I think Timmy Stutzler is a guy that is so coachable. He wants to play on both sides of the puck. He wants to be an efficient 200-foot player. And if you watch some of the goals, the centers are scoring and watching him, I mean, he's really coming into a very, a star player. And when you take some of the oxygen out of the room that Brady would have had there, the oxygen now gets spread out among some other guys
Starting point is 00:25:41 and now going to be leaders. They have to be leaders on and off the ice. And they're a very close-knit team. We heard Shabbat talk about that, how much fun they have and how much they enjoy being around one another. I think last year it got off the rails a little bit. Whatever happened, I mean, I don't know what, but whatever went on, really scuttled the ship there for a period of time.
Starting point is 00:26:06 Allmark got it together after the Olympics, played incredible, and the senators were able to get in. Now, when they got in, you know, Allmark continued to play, like, at a very high level, but they just couldn't seem to find a way to score enough goals in that first round against the eventual Stanley Cup winner. So, hey, they did it to a lot of teams, right? But I do believe this is a confident team.
Starting point is 00:26:29 I think it's a team that could score. And I think on the back end, when you look at their top guys, Sanderson's going to get back and get playing. He's such a great player. Zub isn't playing. So they don't even have those two guys. And they're two and one.
Starting point is 00:26:47 So that's not a bad start for not having those guys. Youchemichuk is going to have to come in and find his way, but I think he's ready. And I think Spence has been a real great, pleasant surprise for them. And then you got the Clevens and the Motten Polos. They've got some depth on the back end. and I do believe that they're good enough defense corps that they can be a playoff team.
Starting point is 00:27:11 I think it's going to come down to, at the end of the day, if their goal-tending stays true and their systematic stuff stays in place, this is a team that will be hard to play against. For the gold-tending, I come through, Gals, Omerk's got to be in the net. Like, at some point, like, what... Oh, for sure.
Starting point is 00:27:26 Are the teammates rolling their eyes every time this guy leaves the net? You know, the thing that threw me off, and the other night I was doing the game, and we got the call down saying that Allmark wasn't coming back out, right? That Erson was going to come in the net. Okay. There was a bit of a collision at the net.
Starting point is 00:27:47 You know, I can't recall the player that slid into him, but there was somebody driving to the net. I think it was Hagen's maybe, I don't sure. And he got taken down into him. So maybe something there happened. He got into the locker room, and maybe because of Sanderson coming back, and trying to play and then re-aggravating something.
Starting point is 00:28:07 They thought, let's not mess with this. Let's just take you out. We got a 4-0-0 lead. We don't need to mess around. Let's be smart about this. But then all of a sudden, he was sitting on the bench. So I'm thinking, well, if he's hurt, why is he on the bench? If Erson gets hurt, is he going back in or can he go back in?
Starting point is 00:28:27 So there was a bit, that's something I haven't seen very often before, but I don't want to read too much into it. Maybe it was simple as if he had to go in, he, could, but they were just going to be careful about it. So definitely he's a guy that's battled the injury bug. You know, he's also had some mental health issues along his career as well that have affected him. So these are things that obviously are not controllable. So, you know, the senators certainly support him. They always have. And so he's in a good spot that way. Yes, he has to stay healthy, Kipper. That's, that's, I mean, that's the bottom line. I mean, this is a guy
Starting point is 00:29:03 that, you know, when he is on his game and he's playing, I mean, he is a very, very good goal tenor. And if they can get him, keep him healthy, it certainly makes their chances a lot better of being where they want to be at the end of the season. And it's a comfort thing too, right? Knowing that your goalie's in the net, on the nights, you need them there. When he's in and out of the lineup, it is a bit frustrating,
Starting point is 00:29:27 but sometimes you just can't help it. But it is something that's followed him for sure. Gals, great job, as always. I appreciate you starting a great season off for us today. Welcome back, Gals. I know. Good to be back, guys. Thanks for having me, as always.
Starting point is 00:29:41 Gary Galley. Appreciate it, Bud. Sporescent. There's no way Ottawa feels comfortable with Allmark because he is a great goalie, but we've seen it time and time again. Like, who can you count on and who you can't? You know, there is a sensitivity there over last year's conversation. around mental health and he did the sit-down interview.
Starting point is 00:30:04 And, you know, I think it's sort of an awkward situation. I don't know what this one is, but I think they don't really know how to handle him. And they just want him to be in the net and play goal. And I'm sure he would like to as well. Same a little that Harrison's got it. He'll be fine. It's probably not a long-term answer.
Starting point is 00:30:21 That is interesting about him going back on the bench, right? Mm-hmm. Strange. You're hurt. Probably stay in the room. Yeah, straight. But anyways. Game time?
Starting point is 00:30:31 Game time. All right. Get my read ready here because, you know me. It's game time. Is that I bet 365? Home of the three goal, early payout, and an official partner of the NHL. USB 19 plus, Ontario and Alberta only.
Starting point is 00:30:46 Please play responsibly. So three games on the ice tonight. Cid and OVie facing off tonight for the first time. And this is, they've been playing. They should fight. They should have a classic fight. 22 years, boys. Does that not make you feel ancient?
Starting point is 00:31:03 22 years is a lot of years. I was, it would have been, yeah, that's crazy. I like that you couldn't do that. Or he didn't want to reveal. Yeah, you know, I'm young, a young man. It's crazy. No, I was young man. You were when we started the show.
Starting point is 00:31:16 Oh, okay. When they, it's, I mean, you guys are. Yeah, 22 years. So in that vein, you know, it's their first time. It feels like it'll be a special year for Ovi, I guess. I don't know if he's going to score many goals. How many does he need to pass Wayne for all the? 16.
Starting point is 00:31:30 Something like that, yeah. For all the tucks that we started only caring about this when OV's, like, I mean, this was never a conversation. Well, we created a new record that OV didn't have. They're not giving you much value on an OV any time goal. But how about both of them to score tonight parlayed if I could do that quickly here? I think it's going to be a real juggle for them to kind of manage his minutes, his power play, make him happy, not make them happy, make the rest of the team happy. It's been noted by the teammates as well. Has it?
Starting point is 00:31:59 Yeah. Give me both Sid and Ovi to score in the final first matchup of the year for these two guys at plus 850. I like that. So I try to stay hot. Hold on the Ovi thing, or do you want to... No, go ahead. Talk. The Ovi thing is fascinating.
Starting point is 00:32:12 It almost reminds me of like when Gordy Howe played a shift to say that he played in six decades or whatever it was. And it was like, you know, ceremonial. Like Ovi played 12 minutes in a game this year. Yeah. And he looks not fit. But he's Ovi and he can shoot it in the net. But like, how weird is that as a teammate? You're like, there's better bods on the zigzags.
Starting point is 00:32:31 Let's just say that, which is not saying a lot. Not stronger, I can tell you that. Oh, no. No, but. He's got that Dustin Bufflin build slash strength combo right now. Is he going to want to, like, are we, you know, I don't know if you guys follow the NFL at all, but Lane Johnson just retired. It's like, he was played four games. He's one of the most famous left tackles or right tackles.
Starting point is 00:32:51 Could you just leave midseason be like, I can't do this anymore? I just can't imagine being. He wants to collect the gifts first, doesn't he? Oh, yeah. But like you're, Alex. Alex Tucker or whatever and you're on the bench during the power play. Ovi's just out there for two minutes going, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know where I am, boy, yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:08 I can't get that. I have no idea what it's going to look like. And let's try to stay hot with the anytime goal scores. Colorado in Winnipeg, taking on the Jets. Big one for the Jets after a nice little start here. Give me a Kyle Connor anytime goal tonight against the Colorado Avalanche, plus 165 on the bet 365. That was game time.
Starting point is 00:33:29 He's ended by Bet365, home of the three goal, early payout, and an official partner of the NHL must have a team plus, Ontario and Alberta only. Please play responsibly. Okay, let's take a quick break when we return, sights and sounds a little bit from around the National Hockey League, including Paul Maurice on losing Admarchen. Are you kidding me?
Starting point is 00:33:53 And Dylan Larkin makes his return. I don't know if you guys caught any of the clips. But gals talked about it a little bit, and we'll get into it more when we return to Real Kipper and Born. Diving deep into Leaps, Raptors, Jays, and NFL. The Jady Bunk is podcast. Subscribe and download the show on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. A reminder, Real Kippenborn brought to by Bet365. Nick Kippe is J.B. Sammy.
Starting point is 00:34:29 Hey, that last segment. Yeah. You gave me a bit of a look as if you thought I sneezed. Correct? No, I did not. I coughed. I thought it was a stee. No.
Starting point is 00:34:38 No, it was a cough. Gals of the middle of a great answer. I hit the COF button and I coughed. Okay. Okay. And I just wanted on record, my consecutive streak of not sneezing on air remains at 26 years. See, I think you could just say that. That's like Josh Allen going in for one snap to keep his streak going.
Starting point is 00:35:01 Like, it feels like a little fabricated to me. Could have been a sneeze. Not a chance. I want to say something. Oh, I don't believe. When I sneeze, you'll know it's a sneeze. All right? I'm telling you right now.
Starting point is 00:35:14 Dad sneeze, tongues, 10. Trivia question. Five guys in the NHL have four or more goals already. Who are the five guys? Jack Eichol. Incorrect. Dylan. Incorrect.
Starting point is 00:35:30 No, Dylan, Gunther, no. No, you got the... Three. Schmaltz. There it is. Nick Schmaltz leads a league with five goals. Kyle Connor? No.
Starting point is 00:35:39 Four goals. I'm saying it because it's weird. Who is it? Paul Cotter. Oh, yeah. All right. All right. I love Cotter.
Starting point is 00:35:45 Victor Ollifson. Welcome back. Codder. Ollifson and Vegas has four. And Evan Bouchard and Edmonton, Sebastian Otto. Bouchard is going to keep shooting him in. Bushard is Haman. They're going to win 10, 9.
Starting point is 00:35:59 Looking forward to that game tonight. They, going back, they lost their last night, last year. in that building. So going back there to play the ducks tonight. So should be good for the Oilers. Didn't give up a touch. Did you guys, did you guys watch L.A., Florida?
Starting point is 00:36:13 Did you see Marcian go down? No, I saw I did see him go down. I saw the highlight. My first thought is, when I watch a guy get carried off the ice, like Marchand is usually like five feet away from him, not the guy. Right.
Starting point is 00:36:33 It was really strange seeing him leave the ice like that, which he almost never does. The reaction is really bad in that the other leg is riving around in pain. He's just holding the one leg. He just kind of, it'll look like a guy in some real trouble here. Quite frankly, frankly, like, made me sick. I just, Marshan, at least had battles with him over the years or whatever, but he's like, 10 out of 10 legend for this era, like, Hall of Famer. They're ripped his knee out or he broke his leg, something.
Starting point is 00:37:05 Just seeing him sit. Like he's just not, he's not, that guy. Like you said, he's just never. Not that guy. He gets up. He's always a badler. He plays all the time. He's the guy that caused it.
Starting point is 00:37:13 Or that too. Right. That too. But you know what I mean? Like, he just, I don't know, it just was not. So no Barker for two months. No Marchand for, let's assume at least that long. And they still found a way to win against L.A.
Starting point is 00:37:25 Hell, he's not going to be any good, man. Okay. We can go through a dozen teams and say that. Yeah. But they still found a way to win. Yeah. Right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:37 Two o'est last night against a team that's no good. But they took a piece off, a point off San Jose. They, who else did they be? They had a brutal start to the season. Their schedule, Florida, their first team was in Carolina. And then they went and played a Western road swing against good teams. All right. We got Paul Marie sound?
Starting point is 00:37:57 We do. Because he was asked sort of about them losing guys. And, you know. and kind of comparing it back to last year. And you gave, you know, a pretty good answer, if I do say so. Okay. So let's play it. Paul Maurice Clip 1 on the team acquiring depth.
Starting point is 00:38:10 In those situations, particularly. You know, credit to Bill Zito and our pro-scouting staff for the people that they brought in. Lars Eller has been incredible for us. Huge on the 5-on-3. He's on the ice at the end of the game. Half-away. I thought that whole line early in the game when I could get him out before. the penalties kicked in, really physical and stylistically perfect for the way that we want to play.
Starting point is 00:38:38 I guess maybe, I don't know if we, I would say we learned a lesson, but we suffered so badly with our injuries last year. We went, our main team got injured, then our depth got injured, and we were into the third layer. So did a great job acquiring depth for us so that we have good players that can come in and help. It's interesting seeing a team like them go to such old players. I feel like Tampa Bay has done this in the past and teams that win. They recognize you need men who've gone, you know, to the dance and been there before the Kings when they won a bunch of old guys. I forgot Eller went to Florida. And I've always liked Eller as like a guy.
Starting point is 00:39:16 It was so good in Washington. But even now at an older age, like he's, you know what you're going to get with him? I've just always liked him as a player. Hathaway is just such a mean guy. Hate that he's a panther. Yeah. Hate that he's a panther. So there you go, boys.
Starting point is 00:39:30 There's some nicer third line can look like a number one line. Well, without Marchand, it hurts, but loose-ter-ran. They can roll. They can roll. They can roll those forwards still, though, to Paul Marisa's point. They're paid, too, right? Like, their top guys make still little. Their third line, those guys make $5 million, right?
Starting point is 00:39:47 There are quality hockey players, no doubt about that. So with Parkov. Brady still on bagels after four games. So is that eight straight games without a point, dating back to the playoffs last year? You're out closer than me. He's, in Ottawa, he was one of the stars. Yep. I'm not sure he's going to be that in Florida.
Starting point is 00:40:06 I don't agree with your framing here. Yeah, he was the face of the organization. He was the captain. He was the face. He's a captain. And the face of your team. He's in his 20s. He's been a guy who's been near 40 goals before.
Starting point is 00:40:18 Yeah. He just won a gold medal. You can't call that a complimentary player. I'm not, uh, I think, but on Florida, he takes a back seat to. To who? When they're healthy, Barkov, Reinhardt. All right. You know, he's, for Hage, he's a complimentary player, but Bennett, he takes a backseat to Bennett.
Starting point is 00:40:42 No, he doesn't. On that team? Well, maybe. On that team. Well, maybe, but. Bennett is a face and a consmite winner, my friend. He is, he, listen, he's been that, but I would say that if you ask people who's a bigger star in the league, who's expected to do, produce more. Because he came from Ottawa and he had a podcast.
Starting point is 00:41:01 He's put up bigger numbers than Bennett's whole career and he's been a captain in the league. He was just a, to me, he was a superstar by circumstance in terms of playing there, being the face of it, making him be the high. Well, then that's the conversation here is that this guy was maybe made it to be more than he is. Agreed. I just thinking, like, he's, he'll never be seen in Florida like he was in Ottawa. In a game last night where they lost Marchant. He'll never be seen in Florida.
Starting point is 00:41:29 He was 17, 12 in Ice Time. So the game before that, 16-0-2, 19, like, three of the, or four of the five games, he's been under. He'll get hot. He'll get hot. I think he's a good hockey player for years. But is he a star, a superstar in the league? Overrated.
Starting point is 00:41:45 Yeah, I'll call him a star, but. Okay. Super. We're in the ballpark. Super's in now. Do you want to talk about Larkin? Yes. Okay.
Starting point is 00:41:55 We've got a few clips. Okay. Let's start with. Do people need contact? He scored last night, right? He came back first game. Shot in the net, had an assist at least. Are the crowds as bad as people made out?
Starting point is 00:42:08 Do you see it? Do you see this? They're passing around the Red Wings flag before the game, the giant one you passed? There weren't enough bodies to propel it around. Give Detroit fans credit. When they got mad about the way things are being run, they just tapped out.
Starting point is 00:42:23 $6 tickets, I think, last night to get in, I saw. Yeah. Got to sell a lot of little Cs. These are pizzas to cover that cost. A lot of pizza. A lot of pizza pizzas up the middle. That's a hot readdies. That's 1980s, Detroit Red Wings Bad.
Starting point is 00:42:39 Yeah. I grew up with them making 25 straight playoffs. They were nothing but the picture of respect and perfection. I grew up when they were opposite of that, and they were the laughing stock before the Illich family came on board. And then in my era when we played, it was the Rangers, the Leafs,
Starting point is 00:43:03 and the Red Wings as your horses of the league. They ran the league. Yeah. And it's funny because when I, you know, because we're 10 years apart, whatever we are, 15 years, the Rangers and the Leafs struggled when I was young by and large,
Starting point is 00:43:21 but the Red Wings were just like... Unstoppable. Yeah. I always just looking at them being like... But I, It's so cool. It is so sad right now to see where the Detroit Red Wings are today. And like what's in the hopper?
Starting point is 00:43:35 What's coming? Let's listen to Dylan Larkin on the Red Wing fan reaction last night. You got booed when he touched the puck a few times. Let's play that. Clip one. Yeah. I mean, I was ready for it on the home opener. And, you know, it's part of it.
Starting point is 00:43:52 And I'm trying to be a man and face it. and you know, I understand why that's happening. But again, like I said to you guys at the start of the season, I was going to try and show up with my play. And it was nice to be out there with the guys and get a win. I liked everything but with the guys. With the guys I don't want to be with. Yeah, like, what is it?
Starting point is 00:44:17 That's a very weird dynamic. Do you think there's guys in the room who are like, I'd rather not have his goal in an assist and just tell them to not. He doesn't want to be here. What are we doing? Yeah. I think it's, yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:29 There would be some guys like that for sure. Yeah. Do you think they have a non-Murican group chat? Oh, I love that question. Because yeah. Yeah. I think some guys do. I don't think it's a team-wide group chat, but I bet there's.
Starting point is 00:44:42 The no-dillon club? So if it's... If it's... No dillans. We've got similar scenarios, but two different cases. one is he plays and then we go to Winnipeg and one he doesn't play so if you were to pick one that's right and the other one's wrong which one would you say I think playing playing is right yeah
Starting point is 00:45:09 playing is the right thing to do but it's from a team perspective they kind of puts the on us on them should you allow him to play if he has publicly stated he does not want to play for your team don't you think the, like, the perception of a guy that's like, I know what, hey, the trade request wasn't good. The way I handled it, not good. But I'm willing to get introduced and get booed. I'm willing to go out there and eat it. I'm willing to go out there. It's a way better perception.
Starting point is 00:45:37 The man comment he made. Yeah. That's what the man comment. Yeah. And I think he, I think there's a lot of people saying, it's a pretty good quote on his part. It was a great everything up until being out there with a guy. Yeah. But still.
Starting point is 00:45:50 You have to say the right thing when you're doing the wrong thing. And Halibok just looks brutal. Like you just look like the... The one thing... Yeah, exactly. So when he gets traded, he gets to slide right in. He's game shape. Yep.
Starting point is 00:46:06 The guy in Winnipeg, if you're listening, go back to work. I don't care. Bood. Would they take them? Go back to work. They have no choice. Would they take them? I think so.
Starting point is 00:46:18 They have no choice. Stu Skinner's their starter. Go back to work. It probably is too Skinner. Take the Dylan Larkin bullets and go back to work. This is actually the problem that we had complained about previous years of the Leafs PR stuff where we felt like you just kind of got to go out there and own it a bit, right? You just eat it.
Starting point is 00:46:40 Every gets it out of their system, says they're pieced, and then you've eaten it. And you get to move on. Do not go to December and then think you're going to get traded and then go and have a great season. I wouldn't want to trade for a good point. No. No. Not been on the ice. Wouldn't you have way more,
Starting point is 00:46:57 I guess he's probably got a ton of value anyway, but if he comes back, looks like himself, gets back in with his teammates, do you have more value? I don't know if that makes a difference, but. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:05 Yes. Yeah? Well, it makes the decision easier to trade for him. How's that? That's a big if he plays well. If he comes out and he's garbage, who knows? Minor trade oil traded for Philip Hollander. They can't help themselves with the Leafs.
Starting point is 00:47:21 former leaf. Well, Dubus has traded that kid three times, I think. He traded for him, traded him away, and now traded him away on a different team. Oilers need, they just put Colton on IR. What is going on with the Oilers? They need hockey players. No, they need to smudge the dressing room. They need a healer.
Starting point is 00:47:43 It's the curse of Babs. Oh, that's the curse pubs. Oh, he came in, and all of a sudden they got no R&H, no Dickinson. now Doc. No Hyman. No Hyman. Yeah. They are.
Starting point is 00:47:55 It's a hurting crew. Yeah. Okay. How many games on Taps, Sammy? Three tonight. Just three. Three. Wednesdays is really quiet.
Starting point is 00:48:04 Yeah. Quiet. Well, Amazon Prime Night. Yep. Is that a thing? Yeah. Clear the stage. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:11 Celebrity missed practice. He's still day-to-day. Patrick Kane went home and played in Chicago. Yeah. Jonathan Taves. That's pretty cool. Really cool. I got to say, them signing him is the most like, please don't be mad at us. So true.
Starting point is 00:48:28 Shield. Please. Kane. Please like him. No, no. You remember those years? How about the fact that they gave him $8 million when no one else would give him half that? Have you been following the Blackhawks?
Starting point is 00:48:38 They gave him eight million. Dude, the Blackhawks have been doing this for years. Two years. It's crazy. They gave Corey Perry four million. They gave Nick Falino four years. Or sorry, four million to both of them. Didn't they?
Starting point is 00:48:48 Like, they've been given depth guys. to be there. They're giving away money. Like money like it's candy and Baltimore Orioles are laying off their mascot. Is that real? Did you see the goal of Kane scored against Vegas though the other night? It was vintage. Like cut in off the off the off wing, put it upstairs.
Starting point is 00:49:07 So they still got some game. Blackhawks, man. I mean, that's just, hey, check it out. Hey, listen, Pat Kane's good hockey player, one of the best Americans of all time. He's Vladdy right now. They are paying for what he's done. what I did. Blackhawks have three firsts.
Starting point is 00:49:23 The Blackhawks have seven picks in the first three rounds of the next draft. Can you go get some players? Trade them. Get some players. All right. Go get Edmondson. All right. Our thanks to Gary Galley. Did we have anybody in the first year?
Starting point is 00:49:39 Mailbag. Thank the listeners. Mailbag. We thank the listeners. Boy, Nick Richard. Okay. Enjoy your Wednesday night hockey. And we're back tomorrow to do it all over again on The Real Kipper and Boren Show.
