Welcome back to the fastest hour in hockey. It's the real kipper and born show. We are
live on sports net sports net five 90, the fan sports net nine 60 in Calgary, six 50
in Vancouver and sports net plus Derek Brandale.
No Derek Brandale.
No.
Jake DeSane Schultz. Austin Mackey.
Austin Mackey.
And Austin Mackey.
Yeah. I found out when he said his voice.
That's okay, Sammy.
It's Friday, boys.
No problem.
At all, as always, this hour of Real Kipper and Born
brought to you by Beth 365.
Here we go.
Game day once again for our show and hockey fans everywhere.
Game two Florida Panthers, Edmonton Oilers.
In a few minutes we'll have Doug McLean for his abbreviated version of Off the Rails Friday.
It's abbreviated? Well, we're only an hour today. We're abbreviated version of Off the Rails Friday.
Is it abbreviated?
Well, we're only an hour today.
We're abbreviated.
We are.
Doug is full sentence.
He'll go all day long though still.
In fact, we'll say goodbye to him
and he'll stay on the call just in case we come back to him.
Never know.
He stands, you know, I hear from people
about the Doug segment and I gotta say Doug talks about people liking the Doug same
Segment he's right. Yeah, they do. They really like the Doug's unfortunately very
It's like it's maybe the most pop. Yeah, maybe the number one. Okay, I give them that
But we do have an occasional one that
Give them that but we do have an occasional one that
Says, you know, oh sure get him off Valley segment is extremely popular It's very popular like anything though. Nothing pleases everyone. Yeah, I know no no
But there are a few that say he's no good get off the show
It's not doing you any good and it's led by his wife Jill
Very true a Sammy nice hat. Oh yeah, thanks. Oh, this old thing? Yeah. Yeah, thanks. You went out to the Canadian Open? I did. I went to the RBC Canadian Open yesterday
at TPC. I had a really great time. I would say that I was flattered by the amount of
people that stopped me. Oh yeah. Really?
I mean it was ridiculous.
You're a celebrity now.
But they all just wanna ask me.
Did you sign autographs?
No, but they're all just like, what's Kipper like?
That's it.
They all just wanna be like, what's Kipper like?
The one guy I ran into, I forget his name,
he was like, is Kipper coming this week?
I'm like, I don't think they have 15 grand
to get him out here, so.
Is he as big of a jerk as it appears on the show? Yeah, that
sounds better than what I get every time right now is a what's up with Marner? Oh, no, but
it was fun. It was a lot of fun. It was a little rainy, but I went around with the Canadian
boys yesterday. Saw Mackenzie Hughes make a two on a 497 yard par four. It was pretty
cool. He was fired up. He couldn't see it, right?
No, I couldn't see it either.
I was like, I was parallel with him in the fairway,
but he did a big Wendell Clark fist pump after he jarred it.
So it was cool.
497.
497.
Two shots.
Two shots.
So our Canadians are in good shape though.
Yeah, we got a couple near the top of the leaderboard here.
Cameron Champ clearly had a really good couple days,
but you know, three different Canadians,
including a man named Richard Lee, is at the, tied for second,
so we're looking good.
Taylor Penn.
And Rory not so much.
Rory looks like he wants to be on a plane
to wherever Oakmont is.
Will he?
Pennsylvania?
Will he meet the media or will he just?
Oh buddy, he's on a car.
Rory!
Out of there, he's gone boys.
Before we get into our Stanley Cup final news of the day, Peter DeBoer, no longer the head
coach of the Dallas Stars.
He might be the most successful coach record wise over a stretch of 10 years than anyone
else to lose his job.
I know.
He's been on a phenomenal run,
including appearances in the conference final
with three different teams.
Yeah.
And it's not good enough, I guess, today.
I guess they beat a very good Winnipeg team
and a very good Colorado team and it cost you your job off
Series and then they get beat by the Oilers who beat everyone they mopped up Vegas. They mopped up Kings
You've got an article just recently posted. Is it up?
Not yet. It should be up in an hour
So give us the the the gist of. The gist of it is about coaching today
and how the average length of coaching
10 year right now is like two and a half seasons.
And how impossible is it to coach with any authority
when people know, when the players know
you're not gonna be there anyway.
Like you're just, every coach is a lame duck coach
before they start and it's stupid.
Anyway, I know we have Doug and all.
We do, which means a great segue from your comments
about a lame duck to one who's been one many, many times.
Let's welcome him in now.
Lame duck, McLean.
Yes, no doubt about that.
Do you, where are you?
We'll get into the Stanley Cup final for sure, but where are you on on Pete DeBoer and
Mac we're talking about a guy that as a
Pretty great record. I mean he has not won a Stanley Cup
He's not neither at Paul Maurice as of a year ago just the only thing missing is a Stanley Cup
This guy's done conference finals.
He's done finals.
He's won every game seven I think he's ever been in
in playoff history.
629 winning record.
But why is he no longer the head coach of Dallas today?
You know, I think there's a few things that, you know, first of all, a couple of
tough rounds in the playoffs. Like they played Colorado and they play Winnipeg. Two tough rounds.
They looked like a little bit like a very disinterested team in the Edmonton series. I
couldn't get over how poorly they executed, whether it was 5 on 5 power
play, whatever. And, you know, with that dynamic blue line, I thought I'd see a lot difference.
So that, you know, they had a tough goal.
Oddinger is starting a new eight-year contract, if I'm not mistaken. And we talked about it
last week on the show. I mean what happened post first of all
He goes into the he's in the middle of the plows and he said look the coach can't score goals
You don't say that you say that if you're having a beer or you say that with your buddies
But you don't say that in a in a scrum in a playoff series. The coach can't score goals
The Ottinger debacle was really bad
It was bad enough what happened in the timeout and putting them back in.
But the way he handled the press conference was ugly. It was really ugly for a star, for a star,
a supposed star player. I've heard rumblings that, you know, there's been comments made that you'll never win with Ottinger, you know,
by people within the organization
and actually within the coaching staff. Those things cost you your job and you're supposed to,
you know, you're expected to win when you're coaching the Dallas Stars with where they are
as a franchise. And unfortunate for Peter, I like Peter. He's had a great career.
This will be what six teams he's coached. Next will be a seventh, I believe.
They, you know, I heard the post season meetings were ugly.
They were not good. And whether you like it or not,
post season meetings with the general manager mean a lot. They do.
And we've seen coaches, how many coaches we had fired the last three years because of
what was said in the post-season meetings.
So is this just a simple case of the inmates running the asylum here?
So the players all go in and say Pete's too hard on us or, you know,
is like, I don't, I don't think it was that. I think, I think Jimmy Nils is sharp
guys, a smart hockey guy. Jimmy would have felt that going into the meetings
that there was some real unrest within the troops. I would say that. And I'm
sure it didn't just pop up in the playoffs. And the other thing that you're,
this team was expected to, to really do some damage at playoff playoffs. And the other thing, this team was expected to really do some damage
at playoff time. And you've got an owner that is a guy that's involved. And I've told you
guys many times in this show, it's not always the GM who fires the coach. Many, many times
it's the owner telling the GM to fire the coach. And I many times it's the owner telling the GM to fire the
coach. And I've had it happen to me on a couple of occasions and it's you got no way out of
it. So you know what? They just they had no juice in that series against Edmonton. Am
I wrong in that? I know give Edmonton full marks, but they had no juice in that. Well,
yeah, I mean, my mean my opinion bitter disappointment for sure
bitter disappointment
Go ahead. I just want to ask you generally about the idea of coaching in today's NHL
Where it feels like the players now have the power
It used to be that the coaches be like they wouldn't give the opportunity, the ice time you had to do what they said.
Now it kind of feels like you can't criticize the player publicly.
I'm with, I'm with JV on this one.
I wouldn't say a bad word about any leaf.
I'm with you.
Are they too soft?
Some of these kids that they can't handle a little bit of a challenge, even if it is
public.
Yeah, no, I, I would say it's a little different,
but I don't think it's that much different. I really don't. I, I think, I don't think
you're accurate on that. Like coaches have been fired every two and a half years for
how long, you know, for how long? I mean, it happens in it. It happens a little more
often because of maybe an ownership change.
Maybe that's a little bit of it, the type of owners that we've got now, the pressure
to perform when you've got billion-dollar franchises and many in excess of a billion,
a lot in excess of a billion dollars. But this isn't new. I mean, we've watched this
in every sport. The coaches get fired every year. There's eight or ten
What what about black Monday in the NFL? They fire half the league
So I don't think it's that different than it was when I was coaching to be quite honest. I really don't
Yeah, I'm not sure on the stats of a Doug like in terms of you know
Our coaches fired more quickly, it does feel
the thing that hasn't or has definitely changed is the coach's ability to challenge star players,
or at least to speak about it. It just feels impossible that you're not, you know, this
Otter thing kills me, Doug. You can't pull a starting goalie, he gives up two on two
shots in an elimination game and then say we pulled him because hey he's bad in these
games every time that seems pretty fair criticism to me. No I don't have a problem with them pulling
them. I have a problem with the commentary post-game. You know you're pulling a guy
that's embarrassing to a goaltender enough but you don't have to call him out.
have to call him out. And I mean, look, yeah, I didn't like I mean, I'll guarantee you he didn't get fired because of the Ottinger poll. I guarantee it. Was there some a firestorm
over the post comments? Yeah, there probably was over that. But you know, I, you know,
coaches, it's, it's, it's tough. It's a racket. And you know, you, you know, coaches, it's, it's, it's tough. It's a racket and you know, you, you know that going in and, and I'm, you know,
I'm looking at these guys that get a hot, who got hired in Pittsburgh,
somebody fill me in on who he is.
Now I know when he coached the Chicago steel in the United States hockey league,
but, and I know he's an assistant in Nashville and nine and I'm thinking,
I watched the penguins eat
up Mike Johnson and spit him out.
I forgot about him.
Oh yeah.
What?
It was before Sullivan, wasn't he?
You don't hire Kyle Dubas to get the next John Tortorella.
You're trying to find a creative...
I'm the last guy that would ever criticize a guy that was paid his dues as an assistant
coach and gets a head job. I get that. But I remember Jimmy Rutherford interviewing
me for the Pittsburgh penguins job. And he said to me, one of his questions was, what
are you going to do on the bench when Crosby and mall can tell you to F off. Right. That was a question
in my interview. I don't think it was probably.
Did you answer? Thank you, sir. May I have another thing? You know what? I'll tell you
what my answer was. I said, Jimmy, I'll tell you, I'll tell you this right now. Jimmy,
they would never tell me to, because I would have, I would have
quelled it when I knew it was coming close. I would have squelled it before it happened.
Yes. Yes. One more on Dallas Mac, because we, we do have a team that's supposed to be contending
and win a Stanley cup as early as next year again. They just signed ranting into that
massive contract at almost a hundred million dollars here
What if it is the owner that's you know was needed this change?
Where does he go and Jim Neal now? Do they go and get a veteran? Do they go get the next Carberry?
Like where do you think this goes?
They go to a veteran players coach.
That's always what happens.
You go from a hard ass to a veteran players coach.
That's what you go to.
And that's what Jimmy, Jimmy Nill Jimmy's Jimmy Nill is a is as
good a hockey manager as it within the NHL. He's going to do his homework. And I think he'll make
the right call here and make the right decision. And you know, I mean, like there's some still I
mean, I've watched some of the guys getting hired, there's still some pretty quality veteran guys out
there that that haven't got jobs. And I suspect that's the route Jimmy will go. Hey, look,
Jim Nils got to win too.
Jim Nils not getting fired if they don't win the Stanley Cup next year,
but Jim Nils wants to win with this group bad.
And he knows his owner wants to win and he knows his fan base.
And there's lots of pressure to win in Dallas to say the least. So,
I mean, it'll be a thorough search and I think Jim will
will make the right decision. He's that I think he's that solid a hockey guy.
Good to go into the comp finally.
And it won't be like the Pittsburgh hire.
Won't be Dan Muse.
Well, and look, I think Dan, look, Dan Muse has paid his dues.
Anyway, can you just one more add?
No, no, no.
Can you think of a bigger challenge for a rookie like that head coach to go in there
and you still have Malkin and Crosby and Lactang?
Does Sid really want to now break in a new puppy?
want to now break in a new puppy?
I would say knowing Sid, he won't say a word, but he would be shaking his head right now more than I'm shaking my head.
All right.
Does that answer your question?
Yeah, it does.
It's not ideal for sure with those veterans.
Oh, no, it's tough.
It's a tough job for the for a first-time head
coach and look the kid has paid his dues he's a quality hockey guy I'm sure but
this is a tough gig and and listen don't ever think it's comfy and cozy in
Pittsburgh because the Fenway group are not overly excited right now about
what's transpiring in Pittsburgh they They saw their seat, they saw their fan base dwindled dramatically.
They've got a, they paid what a ton of money for this team.
They did not expect this to be going on.
And this team is a long way in my opinion, from being competitive.
All right.
Onto the Stanley cup final game one, Oilers in overtime,
Connor McDavid to Leon Dreisaitl.
Was that game indicative of what you expect
the rest of the way?
Well, they've got to,
Florida have got to win tonight
because I simply don't see them winning
four of the last five.
I know it happens, I get that,
but I don't see that happening
against Edmonton this year. I don't see that happening against Edmonton this year
I don't see them winning four or five and look I thought Florida held
dry silent McDavid
Solid for the first period and a half. I really did I thought oh this there's not a lot of room out there for these guys
Right now they're really they're really shutting them down to a to a point. And then we saw the star power take over.
I mean, I thought that that winning goal from from the play from Bouchard at the
point to Perry's play to McDavid's play to dry side will be in there.
I mean, it was just a spectacular play.
And they've got a lot of I'm blown away by Perry.
I'm sorry. This guy's 40 years of of age and what I'm watching him do is spectacular
He's been until dry side old McDavid took it over. He's been one of their better players. I'm blown away
I'm a little concerned with Florida and I'll tell you why I
Didn't is I'm thinking is Kachuk and Reinhardt injured. I
I'm thinking is Kachuk and Reinhardt injured. I mean watching them in that game, I didn't see anywhere close to the way those two guys
have performed in playoff games in the past.
I thought both of them looked like they were, I mean, I hate to say this, but it looked
to me like they're playing hurt.
And I didn't see anywhere
near the game from Kachuk. Did you guys notice that? I mean, no, I know it's, I know it's
a late game for you guys, but I, you know, I
Speaker 3rd 3rd 4.50 compared to what we've seen in the past, based on the time that he
had off since the four nations tournament and a lot of mixed messages on how bad his
injury was and whether or not he needed any type of surgery or not to rectify it
I'm actually surprised he's he's hung in there this long I agree I mean look
there's no denying that and that's what I'm concerned has it come back to affect
them a little bit right now because he's that effective a player Bennett on the
other hand
was right there with McDavid and Dryside with the I mean I'm watching this guy play the other night
he was going through people around people I mean I'm watching thinking oh man is this guy on top
of his game right now like I've never seen him it was unbelievable performance by Bennett in that
game so look it's the big question is still,
is Skinner going to keep it going? He's been really good. He doesn't deserve me questioning that,
but that's still in the back of my mind. Is he going to be able to get through it? And by the
way he's playing right now, he is. And I picked Edmonton to win. And that's with no disrespect to the Panthers
because they play a hard, hard game.
As far as Skinner's concerned,
doesn't any goaltenders play go up incredibly,
higher when the guys in front of you
are making less mistakes or less
gambles and the breakdowns Mac that we've seen out of I couldn't hear you
Newman's bark and you be quiet be quiet Newman Newman okay okay usually it's
Jill yelling at you it's it's not it's not Newman from the show. It's Seinfeld. He was named after Paul Newman. Yeah, go ahead.
At the end of the day, isn't Skinner just a better goalie because the mistakes that
we've seen in the past out of Evan Bouchard or nurse or the high-risk plays
are no longer there to derail a 60 minute game for them? No, they have really played,
they have grown as a playoff style team in these playoffs.
There's no denying that.
They're playing solid defensive hockey.
They're not giving up a whole lot.
I agree, it's they're playing low risk hockey right now.
Even the high risk guys have bought in
because they
know how important it is. And they saw, they saw themselves get down three nothing last
year. So I, I'm with you and Skinner has made some absolutely great saves. You know what?
I, I love watching a goaltender who fights till the bitter end in the crease, who will
go down battling in the crease. And that's what Skinner does for me.
He will fight till the bitter end to make a save. And I, you know, I'm, I'm, I'm really impressed
with him. I really am for what he's had to overcome. It's unbelievable how well he's performed.
Did you think that Sam Bennett fell on him on purpose? Do you think that goal should have been overturned?
I suspect he didn't stop falling on him. It was almost a little bit. It's almost a little bit.
If you're going through the crease,
why not elbow the goalie in the head or fall on him?
Why not? I mean, I had good friends that used to do that.
Oh, yeah? I've heard of had good friends that used to do that.
Yeah, I've heard of them.
And then, and some of them, that's the most famed.
That's one of their most famous for some guys I know.
Between game two tonight and however more games that we see in this series, please tell
me the next time he touches a goalie, no matter what conditions like he's getting
he's getting penalty yeah he looked at the blue paint he can I get away with
another one how did this guy become so fierce I I just am blown away by it I
mean I am and I mean like I mean I remember him early in his career. Yeah. No,
he didn't do that. Oh, I'm sorry. I mean, no chance. I don't only interferences. I mean,
if there had been a cliff there, I don't think he would have fallen off. You know, for, for,
I don't think he gets enough credit for hockey IQ as well.
Like you watch him along the wall.
You watch him hold on to pucks.
He doesn't throw them away.
There's limited turnovers with him.
He makes safe plays.
Like he's, he's come a long way.
Like this is not, this is not Brad tree livings, Sam Bennett and Calgary.
No, it sure is. This is not Brad tree livings, Sam Bennett and Calgary.
No, it sure isn't. And I'll tell you, there's very seldom do you see guy get traded
and grow with the team like the way Bennett has grown into this team and with this team.
And, and, and I would be nervous that he'll never be able to he has fallen into a team that is absolutely perfect for him perfect for him and replicating it with another organization will not be easy
okay so in other words don't waste your money this summer just give them I would suggest giving them
nine instead of ten uh Florida now. Okay.
Yeah.
Florida's Florida's got to get him signed.
Now I'm hearing a lot of he doesn't take but we're offered.
Yeah, right.
He's he's a pretty important hockey player on this team.
Let's not kid ourselves.
He is one of the main cogs in that hockey game.
You think his game will age well like over an eight year deal or does that even matter
if he's good now? You know, the way it doesn't matter because, you know, you
just buy the guy out who cares? It's only money. They just buy
guys out like what a joke. That's become the biggest joke
in hockey. Speaking of age and well, like, did I miss some
Brock Nelson? Did he have a good year this year?
No, I tried to make this point the other day.
No one wanted to hear it.
Like seven and a half.
So I'm John Tavares in Toronto and I'm seeing Brock Nelson get seven and a half for three
years.
Like seriously guys.
I mean to me it's not even close.
But John wants to stay in Toronto and he's not, Brock has not made over a hundred million dollars in his career like Tavares and it's
like apples to oranges right now, unless Tavares says I will play the market.
Yeah. So what's he going to get? Five times three?
Yeah. I wrote an article for the star. I wrote an article for the star and I said, listen,
if it's three, four, five, what really matters to the leafs is what kind of security you're going to give him moving forward
He's been accustomed to a no movement clause, but could you give him that again on a three-year deal or
Do the leafs have to get tougher with these clauses mac?
Yeah, I I I don't I wouldn't go with the clause at all
I would offer him three times five and hope that he takes it.
I mean, look, again, it's not the end of the world if they have to buy him out, is it?
If they give him a four-year deal and they buy him out the last year, is that the end
of the world?
Because as I said last week, you can't lose a 107 point player and a 38 goal score and think
you're going to be a better team next year.
I'm sorry.
I know the geniuses in Toronto think that Mariner, you know, they've got to get rid
of them, they've got to do this.
I've said many times, be nervous giving up really good hockey players.
They're not easy to find.
They're not easy to find.
Tavares could be valuable if the Leafs maintain their status as one of the better teams in
the Eastern Conference, but if it does go south, he can flip them for a first-rounder,
no different than Boston did with Marchand. Big time. So is there any conversation with
Marner on a sign and trade, or is that out the window? What is a sign and trade? You want a
third-rounder, a fourth-rounder for him? I, I would try to get a prospect in a draft.
I try to get something instead of let them walk out the door for nothing. I know. Like
that's what it, that's what a sign and trade is, but it is not a game changer Mac. At the
end of the day, it's not a game changer. The prospect don't, when you don't have, when, when you
have very, first of all, you got no draft picks and you get very few prospects and you
don't make an extra prospect with a B plus prospect to see you're not getting blue chip.
Yeah, maybe not.
But also if you're the player going to that team, you want to reach in your future team?
I just think it's a joke that this guy is walking for nothing. I think it's a complete
joke. That you lose a franchise player for absolutely nothing. Are you kidding? 700 point
guy and you're losing them for nothing. It makes no sense.
The other one that doesn't make any sense even more for me as Brock Besser, like to hear that, well,
we could, we could, we couldn't get a first rounder for him. And if you knew there was
a chance that you were going to lose them for nothing, at least the Leafs were contemplating
keeping him just for the run in the playoffs. Vancouver didn't even have a run.
Your excuse. Hey, listen, I'm going to tell you something right now.
I've learned a valuable lesson in my radio career.
Okay? Or whatever this is.
I'm never mentioning GQ Magazine again.
Oh no!
I've never mentioned the hockey news again.
And I'm not saying anything negative about Vancouver again.
Because I paid a big price in the last week.
Oh really?
Like what the hell, leave me alone. I was joking.
No, no, no. Keep the attention on Mac, please everybody.
Yeah, that's better.
Don't take your foot off the pedal.
Yeah, Brock Besser, like seriously. I mean, I'm looking at Van Goon and I'm like, oh man, this is getting frightening watching
what's going on there.
I get Brock as probably, I know not the best 200 foot player out there, but he can like
30 goals is worth something.
He's a legit 30 goal scorer.
You know, these guys like the Toffolis, do you know how valuable they were with teams
because they can score goals?
Such a good point.
That's actually a really good comparable.
If you're at Bessers camp, you're like,
he just needs to shoot it in the net for you.
That's it.
That's right.
And I mean, look, there's been abundance of teams looking.
And I don't know what kind of money he's looking for.
That's always another story.
But anyway, the other thing that we gotta give Edmonton credit, just jumping all over
the map here is, and you guys said it to me before, but wall wallman, a Klingberg, a Klingberg
to two big, two big players for them right now to two and Kenny Holland bringing in at
home last year, I mean
from Nashville, those are three and, and boot shirt has settled down and calmed down and
has become a horse back there. So their blue line is much, much better than it was last
year. Yeah.
Really underrated last year. Yeah. Hey, so what's it like out in the Maritimes? We know
you're back home.
I teed it up. I teed it up. I don't care about your golf game. I don't care. And I had, I had a 90
with two seven X's. Do you know what a seven X is? I know. Curious. I was going to suggest a shirt
size, but I couldn't, I didn't want to be mean. Seven X is when you're playing a pair of five and you tell them you got a seven and
they look at you and I say, no, it's a seven X.
No further questions, your honor.
So, so like how, how are maritime hours with the oilers? Like they're it's Boston, Montreal
and Toronto, right? Traditionally, how they feel about
the oilers.
You know what? I don't get around a lot, you know, but I, I think they're just happy that
a Canadian team is in. I really, I think that's the number one thing they're thinking about.
And I think, yeah, they're cheering for them. I think it's positive that a Canadian team
is in it's good for Mark Carney too.
It's it's, you know, when he practiced with them late in the season, he probably is, he'll
be taking credit that he got them going because he was in goal.
Cause I remember him at Harvard when he played goal, he was a third goalie there.
Who tells anybody that the third goalie, just say you're there.
All right, Mack enjoy game two. I gotta let you go now. Hang up. Right?
When we, when we say goodbye to you, is this, if it ends in four, is this show over? We're
on no, no, no, we're, we're even more July guys. Thanks a lot for having me on July.
No, I'm serious. You're on till July. Okay.
Perfect.
That's great.
I love it.
Thanks, man.
All right.
The one, the only Doug McLean.
All right.
I didn't go too long today.
Can we now we'll do it after the break.
It's game time.

Three six five us 19 plus until only please play responsibly
Pretty even on the money line tonight between these two teams as you would imagine
minus 115 for the Edmonton Oilers minus 105 for the Florida Panthers
bet 365
Obviously feels how important of a game this is for the Florida Panthers
You're gonna get their best effort tonight you would imagine so that line makes some sense now. I wanted to look up
oh boy, I've lost it here where the
The cons my odds are I'm cause
Okay, and this is interesting to me and this is a guy I want to talk about maybe a little bit more after I break
No The Panthers are not mentioned Okay, and this is interesting to me and this is a guy I want to talk about maybe a little bit more after I break.
No, the Panthers are not out of this playoff series.
They've lost one game.
They could absolutely win and there is nobody that has been more playoffy than Sam Bennett
and Sam Bennett right now and this may be the best time to bet it is plus
1400 I'll be the to be great to be the cons my trophy winner and listen I
Anticipate that the others gonna win the series. I picked them to win in five
But if the cats do end up winning, it's not Bob
It's not bark of is there at 14 to 1 as well, but Broski's plus 450
So they think he's way better but to me and it's to me if the Panthers do come back in this series
It's 100% Sam Bennett. So 14 to 1 is a good number. Oh
All Bennett needs is like another goal or two and to win it
Yeah, and then you say hey, I had four goals in the final or whatever and you know
Led playoffs and goals and he's also the soul of what they do right physical hard ball in the goalie
injured the goalie
Injured somebody and the last the last thing I'll give out tonight for points
Give me Leon dry saddle to have two points at plus one ten
Anyways, you know I would bet but I would bet Oilers to win and also
Florida to score like four plus it's going one of two ways
Yeah, oilers are gonna win or Florida's just gonna do their thing anyways that was game time presented by bet three six five visit
The app latest odds and find out why it's never ordinary at bet three six five months 19 plus Ontario only please play responsibly
Okay, we'll take a quick break and when we return more line, what's that? Canada line? We got Canada line
And we'll talk about it. All right and a few
Tidbits that we got out of the combine a little bit with the tidbits. Yeah a little bit. What were you kidding?
Just some talk about teams interested in certain players. I love that. Okay, that's good
I also am here to report that the Lane Lambert fired
for his staff Dave Lowry, who's an assistant coach in Seattle,
and Steve Brear, who was the goalie coach in Toronto
when I was there.
He's been in Seattle the last couple of years.
So new staff over there.
Wow.
I should say Jason Botterill fired,
because I'm sure Lane didn't do it himself.
OK, that and more when we return to real Kipper and born the best blue J show out there. Period. Blair and Barker. Be sure

23 foot birdie attempt to get to one back. Oh my god. These guys are good burn and edges. He looks good out there right now. Um
Canada line is brought to you by Miscouca Bay Resort a top-ten ranked Canadian course part of the Freed Golf Network
And we have a lot to get to here So I'm gonna play a couple calls and then we're gonna get to some other stuff after including the lease signing a very familiar face as a
Assistant coach, but we'll get to that after the car Lyle. Let's go
Let's go to
Colton from Colona. Hey k-town sup
That's the old
That's the old Nick Taylor clip you're watching. It's no joke.
The alerts have invaded the far west coast, and we are surrounded by them.
All the Canuck fans have barely endured the hardships of this past season, but now we
have to watch Joe Blow from the Duke, Alberta, drive down Harvey Avenue with their flags
waving from their trucks.
People are literally carving the oil logo out of their own lawn for the playoffs.
But don't forget you Canuck fans, our time will eventually come. Also, shout out to our hometown hero
Borny, let me know and I can get you tickets for the upcoming Memorial Cup this season in Kelowna.
We'll love to see a Vipers legend back in
the Okanagan. Anyway boys, keep up the good work and go Canucks go.
I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go next year. Are you gonna go? Well it's in Kelowna, I gotta
right? Yeah, when was the last time I was there? Like five, seven years ago? Back when Josh
George's, I think they won it back in the day didn't they? No idea. Early 2000s? No
idea. Yeah, probably been 20 years. It's the place to be though. It's awesome. I would love to be there
Also, you know the whole Canucks fans this yeah the cow
Yeah, I mean your time the Edmonton yeah, and also having the Edmonton fans who like they own your franchise now
Yeah, they're cheering hard against them. Oh, yeah, Gretzky owned them too. They're not coming around like you. No, no, it's different
The Habs or Ottawa in the final I ain't coming around no so
Sammy maturity out there. Let's quickly do one more Von in Calgary diehard least fan
Whole life forty some years old now.
Just wanna say Sammy, love the past and doing a great job.
Borny, great to see you on HNIC.
Nick, not sure, I don't know what to say about you,
but clear the thing.
I drove up to Evan's for game one.
You just did.
And of the finals here.
And I turned to my wife at the end of the game
and I said, this is what superst my wife at the end of the game and I said
This is what superstars look like when they play the game Yeah, and it just pisses me off so much more that we got these guys in Toronto that this don't show the passion like
You got superstars. That's what they do. They come through and it matters and I've been sitting there going into overtime thinking
Edmonton is gonna win and then I thought to myself if this was Toronto I'd
be thinking we're gonna lose. So that's the difference we gotta find some players like
that. Okay bye.
Here's what I'll say. I do think that it's unfair to anyone to compare them to Dry Settle
and McDavid.
Well but it hasn't been because Matthew's won the heart trophy and we did the, you know.
But he hasn't improved like Dry Settle has improved
and he hasn't improved like McDavid has improved.
The point he's making is that it's not necessarily,
you know, just winning the Stanley Cup,
it's just showing that passion and emotion
that champions have.
And that's a regular occurrence
when the team lifts the trophy.
And that's not what he saw out of his leafs.
You know, last night, or sorry, Wednesday night,
Mikala's in Dry Cytle's face, whatever,
and Dry Cytle, like, look him stone in the eye
and give him one in the beak,
and then they go their separate ways and it's no big deal.
And it's nice that he's able to do that.
He doesn't care.
He doesn't worry about it.
He doesn't think about it.
Sorry to interrupt, but Roy McIlroy is...
He's going to shoot 85 today.
I honestly, I'm playing there next week.
I might have a better round.

Least hired, Least hired Derek Lalone.
See, that's a perfect example of you get on TV. You throw out some fancy, you know technical stuff
I hope someone eats it up and boom you find a job
I think that helped a lot. Oh, no, it's it's
Historically, this is what coaches do that's out of work. They go on TV
Just like to remind everyone I still exist
They go on TV. Just like to remind everyone I still exist
Did it all those years or sports net
Did it or Marie's towards like the list goes on on talk it
Talk huge. Yeah, you just keep building it up and you hope someone buys your funny But you're selling because the more you hear these guys talk
You more the more you learn that they don't have a lot of unique
Insights and not I'm not talking about LaLonde, but like they're thoughtful guys likeable guys, whatever they have an angle
But like there it's not revolutionary the way that they approach the game necessarily
So this is to replace Lane Lambert who's now the head coach of the Seattle crack and the squids
Yeah
so yeah and LaLonde knows how to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning
Because he made sure everybody knew right right so the rest of the never ever lose again to Tampa Bay
That's helpful. You know I do like the idea that you get a guy who's been a head coach in the league got some experience
you know, it's a
Wonder who he's going to who he is this point. You know he now He's built up a little bit of a you know following in a personality
You think they let him speak to the media would you let him speak to the media? Of course?
I would this is one of my biggest complaints how this guy's been a head coach. He's thoughtful and broody
I'm gonna hurt you
He hates talking
Let your assistants come out and give some thoughts.
Let's hear it.
That will be interesting to see under Pelley
if they do change the sort of the assistant coach
mentality, because they've never let
the assistant coaches talk.
They're so afraid of like a little disagreement or.
Something interesting?
Yeah.
I don't think I'd let them talk.
No?
What's the harm?
The harm is. A slightly different message. Oh well, we'll get it right in a corrective statement then. A little bit, yeah. interesting yeah I don't think I'd let them talk no that's the harm a little
bit yeah you know at least you get another angle keep it fresh you can kind
of twist things a little bit you're not doing rocket science though you know
rocket appliances media will pounce on anything that looks especially
Don't talking about you. It depends if it it's followed
you know the comments are followed by like a four game losing streak then you kind of have the ability to
Then Willie goes on he says what's the big deal and then you just go in a four game winning streak
Unless it's the end of the season and your three game losing streak knocks you out. That's true since we're doing Leafs now
I and I'm going full Johnny leaf fan here, but I
Want the least overpaid Bennett bad you're ready. Oh, I'm all in I'm all in I'm watching him on that ice with those guys and
Florida I mean like you said like Mac said Reinhardt
maybe not healthy Kachuk maybe not healthy yeah but like Bennett jumps off
the ice he's their best player by far I don't see him leaving Florida well
please leave and come to Toronto and guide them through please he really was
awesome awesome one and the leafs ares, is that they're an around, not through team.
There is no bigger hole punch of a player than this guy.
He can go around or through.
Bleeding armrest off my chair here.
What's going on?
Do you believe that Brock Nelson, who just signed.
So he's just not leaving.
And the lack of center iceman available
will just get teams to overpay him.
I think it probably is gonna affect things.
What do you expect to happen here?
It seems like you have some insight.
No, I just think he stays.
I think he stays, I think Ekblad stays, and Marchand's gone.
Marchand's gone?
Yeah. To the Leafs?
What do you think? That's more of a realistic. By the way, can I whisper this so everybody loves Marchand's gone. Marchand's gone? To the Leafs? What do you think?
That's more of a realistic.
By the way, can I whisper this
so everybody loves Marchand?
That's more realistic.
That dry settles his on the back door.
That Brad Marchand ends up signing and playing wing
for, with Matthews is more realistic than Bennett.
What about both?
They'd be so playoffy if that happened.
They're just two years till they're just not yeah.
Yeah. Guess if you want to throw the 12 and a half his way because that's that's what's
I think it's going to take for him to leave Florida. Twelve and a half, come on. Come on, Kipper. 10, 10, 10.
He's only eight in Florida.
12 and a half is just a-
Florida's not losing him at eight million, are they?
So are they?
You know, I don't, I don't know.
So the Leafs are gonna have to pay Sam Bennett
more than Miko Ranton to get him.
Come on.
Come on.
Listen, get off, you gotta get off the number
and get into the-
I thought the taxes don't matter, Kipper.
No, in this case it does.
Oh, in this case.
In this case it probably is.
I proved those goalposts.
You're gonna leave a Florida where there's one beat writer
and nobody ever says a bad word about you to come up here.
Okay, great.
You've won two cups there and there's 15 people
at the elbow room after you won the cup. Do you wanna come here and be a hero. You've won two cups there and there's 15 people at the elbow room
After you won the cup
Do you want to come here and be a hero or do you want to stay down there and be anonymous?
How many heroes have they had in the past?
50 plus years the Leafs. Yeah, maybe you're the guy. What if you're the guy? That's why guys keep signing here
What if you're the what if you're the guy? I think he stays and they they find eight million dollars to give him. I
Mean, yeah, of course they'd pay me eight million eight million eight million is a no brainer a lot of other places ten plus
14 in Toronto though
Cost of living maybe more than McDavid, but he drives
Sighted all this drives a golf cart out of his driveway. They all have golf carts down there. Say Darcy, Darcy Tucker's cash and paychecks, you know, 30 years after his career, cause
it's cause he's a leaf. These guys play the short game. They're like, Oh, I'll save 1
million bucks in taxes this year.
Darcy never made a hundred million dollars. These guys will finish with a hundred million
dollars. They don't need anything past their careers.
So the argument is now money doesn't matter because it seems like you're making a money
argument. I'm making what it could potentially take for them to want to leave Florida.
That's all. That's my whole point. I just think if you are looking at money, it's
the dumbest thing to be like, oh, in Toronto, it's going to cost me an extra million. It's like, yeah,
go be the dude in Toronto. N lechari got a cookie sponsorship here
You know you make a
Was a soup guy. He couldn't he couldn't stick handle. They're like how about the soup?
I'm sorry to go
Aubur is playing this like I would I'm watching. Oh my god
Anyways, would you they squirrel in the goal?
It's Friday. We're off the rails
Marco Sturm is a Bruins coach is yeah exciting
Yeah, I don't think there's a ton of pressure on him in the next year to contend
It feels to me like the Bruins are like two years two years three years to regroup
It feels like they're starting to get lost in the wilderness.
Nick Haig, I heard Pittsburgh and Montreal.
Pittsburgh would be a good fit.
Lot of interest.
Montreal's pretty good on D. Someone like Haig would be really good for them.
Those are both good options.
Brock Nelson signing means that probably Charlie Coyle, who's got another year left on his
deal would be moved out of Colorado
Oh, do you think so? Yeah, what about that for the Leafs? I like that
He might be available. No
Our Matthews Tavares coil coil Tavares never look at his playoffs. That's never scores never stick
That's all you fit right in like I honestly think he's you know scores in playoffs Easton Cowan who scores in playoffs Sam Bennett
Okay
so both teams have shown the ability in the playoffs to
Good year and overcome to nothing deficits could the Florida Panthers overcome a to nothing deficit Doug thinks not
Yeah, is it a big deal if Florida goes home? Could the Florida Panthers overcome a two nothing deficit? Doug thinks not. Yeah.
Is it a big deal if Florida goes home down two nothing?
Yeah, they're toast.
Okay. They're toast.
All right.
I kind of agree with you.
Tonight is the biggest must win they could possibly have.
All right.
Florida Panthers, Edmonton Oilers.
Pre-game starts at 7.30. Puck drop 8 p.m. Sportsnet CBC.
Our thanks to off the rails Doug McLean, who's still on the line.
Hi Doug.
It's very possible.
Go home, it's over.
Don't you remember that in Ferris Bueller, right?
When he looks and says, go home, the movie's over. Thanks for watching. Thanks for listening. Have a great weekend, everybody.
