Let's start with the I'm the only one who cares No, and John Tavares has agreed to a four-year deal four point three eight AAV contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs. What do you think, JB? Let's start with you. I'm really excited about it. I, you know, as someone who covers the Leafs and wants them to have some success,

this makes a lot of sense to me. It's really refreshing to see a contract for one of these big guys at a number that you feel like they're much better than their number. And I think for Tavares, this makes so much sense from a family standpoint, a reputation standpoint, and you can put them in a much better position to succeed. You know, can be a three C making 4.3.

I just think it's a great decision for the player. Good for the team. Nothing but good things to say. I'm a little bit disappointed in the coverage around it, like that we were hearing last week that they're not close and that like he's not going to accept the number under five. All like all these reports that came out about it made me have this resentment towards him and say all these stupid things about it. And then he just signs a pretty significant hometown discount less than a week later.

So myself, and I know some of the people in my life, probably feel a little bit stupid right now, but from a lease perspective, they need him. He came here under a good contract and he's back. Well first of all, you don't know under the circumstances that he came to this conclusion. You don't know under the circumstances that he came to this conclusion like JT and his his agent up until yesterday or two days ago said no chance for signing this

I'm a six or seven million dollar player and We do know on the open market that I believe that he could have been knocking on the door of maybe 20-21 million for three years Okay, right. How can you not? Nelson makes seven, five. So if in the last 12 hours, he's like, I don't wanna go anywhere. I'll just take whatever you're offering. Then that's maybe that's what happened here guys.

I think a genuine willingness to walk away from something and in my own life when it's come to like negotiating, negotiating any sort of a career or opportunity or whatever, when I've been genuinely willing to leave, that's when it's gone well. This is and I think the Leafs were genuinely willing to walk away. This is John Tavira saying, I've made $110 million. You think I care about an extra two million? Like he may have left $10 million on the table.

Well, listen, Bracknell's into three times seven, five, and doesn't produce like John. He doesn't care. He wants to stay here and retire a Toronto Maple Leafs and there is a move from this money back if they win. Forget the money. He's just he's comfortable. Yeah. Okay. Okay. I mean, you know, people were talking four and a half, five million. So I think it's a fair deal for both. Is it a big discount? You guys are talking like it's a devastating discount. Well, there was talk out there that 38 goal scorer and we've watched Stamcoast, you know, still hit the market even though Tampa last season didn't feel like his value was where

Nashville thought it was. But you know, there is a sense that there was more money out there that he's certainly left on the table. Yeah, but he wanted to be in Toronto and they need him. You can say all you want. They need him and he's going to be an important guy. I mean, is he going to be the two, three? He's going to probably be their number two guys still

You know and so it's a good it's a good signing He left money on you know on the table obviously to stay in Toronto is a hometown discount Which you guys alluded to so I think it's a fair deal I think it's a good deal for them and and you can't miss a 30-goal score guys They've already lost Marner and all likelihood so they had to get to Bears done They've already lost Marner in all likelihood. So they had to get Tavares done. Compare them to the other centers that are available out there. There aren't any.

Yeah. That's right. That's right. So I think it's a good signing by Brad. I really do. Doug, what do you make all the player movement right now? A lot of bigger names are moving, teams being fairly aggressive trying to get their people. Yeah, they've got to be aggressive

because of cap situations. And you see, you know, Dallas, they're got to be aggressive because of cap situations and you see, you know Dallas are going to be active You know a lot of teams are trying to move money Because they want to free up they want to sign some people on July 1 so It doesn't surprise me in the least Mac we've seen a couple of trades already. Paturko was one that we anticipated he was not happy in Buffalo was not ready to make a a long-term commitment, including a five-year deal that he ultimately got out of Utah. But

what are you hearing on on the Buffalo front? And ultimately was this was this wise of Kevin Adams? I mean, they've got to fix this problem. I mean, you know, I was in Columbus for a number of years, nobody ever asked for a trade. And that was a new franchise in Columbus. Nobody ever asked for a trade. And you see this, just look at the list of guys they've had to trade in the last couple of years. It's frightening. And I think they got, I like the defenseman, but this, Pidurka has a chance to be an unbelievable talent.

And he got big money, no denying that, but I just don't, I don't get what the problem is, why they don't want to be there. Winning is one thing, I get that, but there's more to it than just losing. What are your thoughts on the Dobson trade, the Islanders pretty interested it seems like in trying to get into the back into the draft for Huggins maybe Higgins sorry but you know they lose Dobson here 9.5 million to Montreal what are your thoughts on that trade? I like it for Montreal I think you know for whatever reason He didn't seem to be appreciated in in on the island it you know what I know There's some there's some words to his game. I get all that but he puts up You know, he's capable of being a 70-point guy. We've seen that

I think it's a Montreal is a real nice fit for him. I don't know why they were so, I've listened to this for two years that they weren't happy with him. I know he doesn't play the physical game. He's gotta be tougher in front of his own net. He's a quality kid. He's a PEI kid. He's a Somerside kid.

Quality, great family. I like it for Dobson because I think he needed a change. It costs Montreal, Heinemann, and two first rounders, Mac. And the two first rounders are significant, but there is a sense that there's a drop off at maybe 10 or 11 when it comes to teams clamoring, I think, to get into that top 10. And at 16 and 17, as a general manager, how difficult would it be to give up those picks? And do you recall always at your draft table where you just hit a hard line on where the talent drops?

Yeah. Everybody knows where the talent drops it. It's in every draft. It could be, I mean, it could be as high as three. I mean, I remember a draft where, you know, cam Barker went third overall and it was a major drop off after, you know, Malkin and Ovechkin. Ovechkin, Malkin and Cam Barker went number three. So you know, it drops off early in some stages and typically you get to the mid numbers and I think often back to when Getsloff and Perry went late first round. We were praying we're going to get

Perry in the second round because we had the I think the second pick in the second round and he goes what 25 to Anaheim. Getzloff was a late first round pick that people liked him but I mean nobody saw the two of them becoming Hall of Famers I'll tell you that. So there's drop-offs every year and it varies. But you know, and you don't know, I mean, you get guys, you know, I had a couple of seventh round picks that played 900 games in the NHL, you know, Chris. So, you know, it's all over the map each year. So tonight is the theme of your book Draft Day. Is it not? Do you feel a special affiliation to this event tonight? Are you selling copies?

I feel so special about it that I probably won't even watch it. I'm in LA here and I've got to tell you, it's so weird here. So sorry, are you there for something totally independent of the draft? I was speaking at a conference, no, a sports management conference, so I'm speaking at it. But it just doesn't feel like the draft. I think it was a monumental mistake. I think they regret it. Obviously it's gonna go back. You know, we knew the GMs wanted this and I think they're gonna be disappointed and I know they are here in LA.

I mean, it just is not the energy that typically is around the draft is not here. Mac, part of the news coming in and it's been fast and furious the last 24 hours is an agreement on a new CBA that runs four years here. Contracts somewhat shorter at six and seven years now, and you know various of other smaller details coming in now as well, but how important is labor piece here for the league,

the players, and maybe a few sponsors out there certainly, you know A new television agreement as well here at Sportsnet Look, I remember and you do as well as I do how bitter it was How bitter it was in the good now era it was really tough sledding I saw Ron Hainsey this morning congratulated him on the deal You know, and I think it's really important. And I think the players have got a good thing going. I know there's a few little things in the end that were sticking points, but pretty

minor in the whole scheme of things. I like it. I think it's good to have it out of the way. I think Marty Walsh, I haven't seen the details of it, but I think Marty and Ron Haines are here to be commended, you know, to get this done this fast. It is crazy. It feels like everything has been pretty amicable since Walsh has come in. And I'm impressed at the speed that they're getting this done, that they just kind of wrapped it up. 84 games and a playoff cap stand out to me, Doug. These seem like two different things. As they said, if you have a hundred games, Doug, maximum two preseason games. I don't know about you guys, but that's not a lot of hockey to be like launch into the season. I'm sure the feedback was no problem. Give it to them.

Yeah. The players. You know, the thing with the exhibition games, I mean, remember Nick, I mean, the players used to fight not to have to play. And that's true. Yeah. They were. And we had the 10 player rule where you had to dress 10 vets and you know, you get your vets to play at home and you take a skeleton crew on the road. It was painful to go through it. When I started in Columbus, we put the nine exhibition games in our season ticket package and I got away

with it. I got away with it for a couple of years and then it didn't go over so well. So, you know, Detroit, it was always, Detroit always wanted to play the full line of a Mechs-Bisson games because they had it in their season ticket package. And it was a home run for teams, not so much anymore. It sounds like the loophole, eh? The long-term injury reserve loophole is closed up here. So does Kuturov need a new t-shirt?

So what did they say on that? I didn't hear, what's the ruling on the long term? It sounds like there's a lot of details to how specifically it's going to work, but there will be some sort of cap, similar to the regular season cap, so you can't bring in a guy the second the season ends who makes 10 mil. Right. So the injury thing, he has to be, you know, they can't fake it anymore. Yeah, if you're going to come back. Not the teams were

faking it, but I think a couple of might've been made, you know, fudging it a little bit. And, oh, can you, can you put goalie equipment on? Cause I can get you a full-time job as a e-bug. We're, we're becoming the NBA now. I told you they traveled with five practice players, you know, because they don't want to wear and tear on their players. I just, I don't know how the owners put up with this. I really don't. The money they're spending. What's an eBug going to cost?

No, but it's not that. It's just another body that you don't need. You know, really. I mean, like, seriously, guys. Like, I mean, why wouldn't they just dress the chef? Hire a chef. They have been. They've been dressing the chef, and it's embarrassing for the lead.

They've got a CBA dress like you can't This might be the most embarrassing thing I've heard in a CBA in History, there's no dress code. There is no more dress code. I think That's great, I'm thrilled second Canadian There's a good chance he'll be on his best behaviour. I got to be careful. I was at a reception last night and I had a lot of people chirping me about, you know,

being tough on Vancouver. I must have said something about Demko at one time, did I? Anyway, they were giving me the shots last night. Would you trade him now, Mac, or would you take your chances on him coming back and being healthy and being the goalie that everybody knows that he can be a top guy? Look, he looked like he was getting ready to be one of the top goaltenders in the league. He really did. This injury is concerning because it seems to have hung around way too long.

I would not be moving them. If Vancouver have any chance of making the playoffs, Demko has got to be their MVP or near the top of the list. He's got to regain his game. And if he does, they can be a competitive team. Now, to give me a close on, like, do you trust Lankin and Shelovs? Is that-
