bet 365 no time for pleasantries guys nothing right into the meat and put I
don't even have time to tell you about my swords jersey why is it there what is
it it's my men's league my old bedzle That's for my buddy Paul Richards right there. Okay, thank you beauty. All right
Plenty to get into including some major trades
Involved but you know locally here for our boy Sammy. Let's start with the I'm the only one who cares
No, and John Tavares has agreed to a four-year deal four point three eight AAV
contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
What do you think, JB?
Let's start with you.
I'm really excited about it.
I, you know, as someone who covers the Leafs
and wants them to have some success,
this makes a lot of sense to me.
It's really refreshing to see a contract
for one of these big guys at a number
that you feel like they're much better than
their number.
And I think for Tavares, this makes so much sense from a family standpoint, a reputation
standpoint, and you can put them in a much better position to succeed.
You know, can be a three C making 4.3.
I just think it's a great decision for the player.
Good for the team.
Nothing but good things to say.
I'm a little bit disappointed in the coverage around it, like that we were hearing last week
that they're not close and that like he's not going to accept the number under five.
All like all these reports that came out about it made me have this resentment towards him and
say all these stupid things about it. And then he just signs a pretty significant hometown discount
less than a week later.
So myself, and I know some of the people in my life,
probably feel a little bit stupid right now,
but from a lease perspective, they need him.
He came here under a good contract and he's back.
Well first of all, you don't know under the circumstances
that he came to this conclusion.
You don't know under the circumstances that he came to this conclusion like
JT and his his agent up until yesterday or two days ago said no chance for signing this
I'm a six or seven million dollar player and
We do know on the open market that I believe that he could have been knocking on the door of maybe
20-21 million for three years
Okay, right. How can you not? Nelson makes seven, five.
So if in the last 12 hours, he's like,
I don't wanna go anywhere.
I'll just take whatever you're offering.
Then that's maybe that's what happened here guys.
But there's no way that JT and his agent, Pat Bresson
had sat around the table for the last two or three weeks There's no way that JT and his agent, Pat Bresson,
had sat around the table for the last two or three weeks and say, boy, do you think we can get them
to 4.38 million?
No, no.
Are you following me here?
I see you're saying like.
He ate it.
He ate it on this.
He ate it.
But then why did he do it now?
Like why not wait till July 1st
and see what the contract offers are gonna be?
Did they weren't there?
No, no, because I think the Leafs would say we're moving on and it might not be there
for you.
I think a genuine willingness to walk away from something and in my own life when it's
come to like negotiating, negotiating any sort of a career or opportunity or whatever, when
I've been genuinely willing to leave, that's when it's gone well.
This is and I think the Leafs were genuinely willing to walk away.
This is John Tavira saying,
I've made $110 million.
You think I care about an extra two million?
Like he may have left $10 million on the table.
Well, listen, Bracknell's into three times seven, five,
and doesn't produce like John.
He doesn't care.
He wants to stay here and retire a Toronto Maple Leafs and there is
a move from this money back if they win. Forget the money. He's just he's comfortable.
Yeah. Okay. Okay. He's just comfortable here. He didn't want to pack up and leave and it's
totally his right to do that for sure. And I understand it. And I understand it from
the leaf perspective that John, you may be able you may be able to get six or seven million on
The open market, but that's not where we have you right?
Someone's gonna sign you and see the 38 goals and the 75 points and say you're my second line centerman
We don't see you there
We we're gonna have to find a new role for you. And it's slotted at 3.38, that's where it's at.
Now of course he's gonna come back
and he's gonna fight like tooth and nail
to go get his second line centerman position again.
And judging on what the Leafs have, he may be there.
We don't know.
We don't know where he's gonna be.
But they didn't pay him second line center money. Can
they that's not this is not second line centerman. No, but
that's what I mean. Yes, my point is I have a better second
line center. Yeah, what he is. But but I don't think they give
him that money. With the plan to be the second line center. No,
no, absolutely not. Once coming. They're shopping looking for one and
He's gonna have to be one of those guys that could
Fill in in a heartbeat if if if they do find a second-line center man, and he gets hurt
He can move up and down the lineup. He can play on the first line the second line the third line
And and I get it because right now
There's there's not a lot of choices out there for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
They need us points just to make sure
that they get back into the playoffs, guys.
Forget about beating Florida with this signing.
This isn't about beating Florida.
This is about getting back into the playoffs.
Well, and you look at what's going on around the league.
It's Paturka, Dobson, Kane, Ziegars,
Berkowski, Marchman, Halle.
Guys are getting traded.
Like, I don't mind the Leafs if they end up
You know Matthews hurdle Tavares down the middle one two three, maybe lot in it for see
but if unless you make that hurdle move a
You're in trouble. I just quickly before I get to Doug. Yeah from the fans perspective with this Tavares thing
This is just so like I sent out a tweet talking about like taking a home down discount and how you know
just so I sent out a tweet talking about like taking a home down discount and how, you know, it's really nice to see what a concept and just all the responses are
Leafs legend, JT legends.
We're all like, it doesn't take much.
Like how he is going to be perceived because of this discount is going to change
his whole people's perspective on him where he was measured against the 11 or what was it 11?
No, it was measured against that 11 mil his entire career here
And now he signs this perceived hometown discount and the perception immediately flips
It just it doesn't take much and it doesn't take much in this market to flip the other way to like people are never worse
Go go three weeks have this guy scored two goals in the first ten or twelve games four million
They sign them. No, that's how crazy this market is. I disagree about that. Okay, it's just he's makes four
He makes nothing now when the cat basically it's like it's it's it's
Definitely fresh for Lee fans to watch a guy
Take a hit like this when his values perceive so much more around the
hockey world.
Okay, fair enough.
Let's bring in Doug McLean.
It is Friday off the rails.
He is in Los Angeles getting ready for his major speaking appearance.
I don't know where are you?
Are you in the LA Coliseum?
Where are you speaking?
I'm in my hotel room right now. And I just I spoke this morning
at nine and I've got to go back and do it at one. So I'm a busy
guy. You are you are okay. What happened? Did I miss some news?
I heard you talking about Tavera. Yes, Tavera signing a
new four year deal at 4.38 AAV. Let's start there for you Mac on on the Leafs bringing JT back.
I think it's a good move for them.
I really do.
And I think the numbers is good.
I mean, you know, people were talking four and a half, five million.
So I think it's a fair deal for both.
Is it a big discount?
You guys are talking like it's a devastating discount. Well, I think it's a good signing for
the Leafs. I think it's a fair deal.
Well, there was talk out there that 38 goal scorer and we've
watched Stamcoast, you know, still hit the market even though
Tampa last season didn't feel like his value was where
Nashville thought it was.
But you know, there is a sense that there was more money out there that he's certainly
left on the table.
Yeah, but he wanted to be in Toronto and they need him.
You can say all you want.
They need him and he's going to be an important guy.
I mean, is he going to be the two, three?
He's going to probably be their number two guys still
You know and so it's a good it's a good signing He left money on you know on the table obviously to stay in Toronto is a hometown discount
Which you guys alluded to so I think it's a fair deal
I think it's a good deal for them and and you can't miss a 30-goal score guys
They've already lost Marner and all likelihood so they had to get to Bears done
They've already lost Marner in all likelihood. So they had to get Tavares done.
Compare them to the other centers
that are available out there.
There aren't any.
Yeah. That's right.
That's right.
So I think it's a good signing by Brad.
I really do.
Doug, what do you make all the player movement right now?
A lot of bigger names are moving,
teams being fairly aggressive trying to get their people.
Yeah, they've got to be aggressive
because of cap situations.
And you see, you know, Dallas, they're got to be aggressive because of cap situations and you see, you know Dallas are going to be active
You know a lot of teams are trying to move money
Because they want to free up they want to sign some people on July 1 so
It doesn't surprise me in the least
Mac we've seen a couple of trades already. Paturko was one that we anticipated
he was not happy in Buffalo was not ready to make a
a long-term commitment, including a five-year deal that he ultimately got out of Utah. But
what are you hearing on on the Buffalo front? And ultimately was this was this wise of Kevin Adams?
I mean, they've got to fix this problem. I mean, you know, I was in Columbus for a number of years, nobody ever asked for a trade.
And that was a new franchise in Columbus.
Nobody ever asked for a trade.
And you see this, just look at the list of guys they've had to trade in the last couple
of years.
It's frightening.
And I think they got, I like the defenseman, but this, Pidurka has a chance to be an unbelievable talent.
And he got big money, no denying that, but I just don't, I don't get what the
problem is, why they don't want to be there. Winning is one thing, I get that,
but there's more to it than just losing. What are your thoughts on the Dobson trade, the Islanders pretty interested it seems like
in trying to get into the back into the draft for Huggins maybe Higgins sorry but you know
they lose Dobson here 9.5 million to Montreal what are your thoughts on that trade?
I like it for Montreal I think you know for whatever reason
He didn't seem to be appreciated in in on the island it you know what I know There's some there's some words to his game. I get all that but he puts up
You know, he's capable of being a 70-point guy. We've seen that
I think it's a Montreal is a real nice fit for him. I don't know why they were so,
I've listened to this for two years
that they weren't happy with him.
I know he doesn't play the physical game.
He's gotta be tougher in front of his own net.
He's a quality kid.
He's a PEI kid.
He's a Somerside kid.
Quality, great family.
I like it for Dobson because I think he needed a change.
It costs Montreal, Heinemann, and two first rounders, Mac.
And the two first rounders are significant,
but there is a sense that there's a drop off at maybe
10 or 11 when it comes to teams clamoring, I think, to get into that top 10.
And at 16 and 17, as a general manager, how difficult would it be to give up those picks?
And do you recall always at your draft table where you just hit a hard line on where the talent drops?
Yeah. Everybody knows where the talent drops it. It's in every draft. It could be, I mean,
it could be as high as three. I mean, I remember a draft where, you know, cam Barker went third
overall and it was a major drop off after, you know, Malkin and
Ovechkin.
Ovechkin, Malkin and Cam Barker went number three.
So you know, it drops off early in some stages and typically you get to the mid numbers and
I think often back to when Getsloff and Perry went late first round.
We were praying we're going to get
Perry in the second round because we had the I think the second pick in the second round
and he goes what 25 to Anaheim. Getzloff was a late first round pick that people liked him but
I mean nobody saw the two of them becoming Hall of Famers I'll tell you that. So there's drop-offs every year and it varies.
But you know, and you don't know, I mean, you get guys, you know, I had a couple of
seventh round picks that played 900 games in the NHL, you know, Chris. So, you know,
it's all over the map each year.
So tonight is the theme of your book Draft Day. Is it not? Do you feel a special affiliation to this event tonight?
Are you selling copies?
I feel so special about it that I probably won't even watch it.
I'm in LA here and I've got to tell you, it's so weird here.
So sorry, are you there for something totally independent of the draft?
I was speaking at a conference, no, a sports management conference, so I'm speaking at
it. But it just doesn't feel like the draft. I think it was a
monumental mistake. I think they regret it. Obviously it's gonna go back. You know,
we knew the GMs wanted this and I think they're gonna be disappointed and I know
they are here in LA.
I mean, it just is not the energy
that typically is around the draft is not here.
Mac, part of the news coming in
and it's been fast and furious the last 24 hours
is an agreement on a new CBA that runs four years here.
Contracts somewhat shorter at
six and seven years now, and you know various of other smaller details coming
in now as well, but how important is labor piece here for the league,
the players, and maybe a few sponsors out there certainly, you know
A new television agreement as well here at Sportsnet
Look, I remember and you do as well as I do how bitter it was
How bitter it was in the good now era it was really tough sledding
I saw Ron Hainsey this morning congratulated him on the deal
You know, and I think it's really important.
And I think the players have got a good thing going.
I know there's a few little things in the end that were sticking points, but pretty
minor in the whole scheme of things.
I like it.
I think it's good to have it out of the way.
I think Marty Walsh, I haven't seen the details of it, but I think Marty and Ron Haines are here to be commended, you know, to get this done this fast.
It is crazy. It feels like everything has been pretty amicable since Walsh has come in.
And I'm impressed at the speed that they're getting this done, that they just kind of wrapped it up.
84 games and a playoff cap stand out to me, Doug. These seem like two different things. Playoff cap, we totally needed. 84 games and a playoff cap stand out to me, Doug. These seem like two different things.
Playoff cap, we totally needed.
84 games.
Ah.
Seriously, is that painful or what?
I mean, we've said if there were 70 games, the quality would probably be better.
We've been calling for a shorter.
Yes, I know.
I know.
Like, where did this come from?
I mean, obviously teams need some more revenue, but I mean, I know. Where did this come from? I mean, he's obviously teams need some more revenue, but I mean, your season ticket holders
are getting hammered now.
I mean, imagine a couple more games in there.
Like serious.
It's crazy too.
As they said, if you have a hundred games, Doug, maximum two preseason games.
I don't know about you guys, but that's not a lot of hockey to be like launch into the season.
I'm sure the feedback was no problem. Give it to them.
Yeah. The players.
You know, the thing with the exhibition games, I mean, remember Nick, I mean, the players
used to fight not to have to play. And that's true.
Yeah.
They were. And we had the 10 player rule where you had to dress 10 vets and you know, you
get your vets to
play at home and you take a skeleton crew on the road. It was painful to go through it. When I
started in Columbus, we put the nine exhibition games in our season ticket package and I got away
with it. I got away with it for a couple of years and then it didn't go over so well. So, you know,
Detroit, it was always, Detroit always wanted to play the full line
of a Mechs-Bisson games
because they had it in their season ticket package.
And it was a home run for teams, not so much anymore.
It sounds like the loophole, eh?
The long-term injury reserve loophole is closed up here.
So does Kuturov need a new t-shirt?
So what did they say on that?
I didn't hear, what's the ruling on the long term?
It sounds like there's a lot of details to how specifically it's going to work,
but there will be some sort of cap, similar to the regular season cap,
so you can't bring in a guy the second the season ends who makes 10 mil.
Right. So the injury thing, he has to be, you know, they can't fake it anymore.
Yeah, if you're going to come back.
Not the teams were
faking it, but I think a couple of might've been made, you know, fudging it a little bit. And,
oh, can you, can you put goalie equipment on? Cause I can get you a full-time job as a e-bug.
We're, we're becoming the NBA now. I told you they traveled with five practice players, you know, because they don't want
to wear and tear on their players.
I just, I don't know how the owners put up with this.
I really don't.
The money they're spending.
What's an eBug going to cost?
No, but it's not that.
It's just another body that you don't need. You know, really.
I mean, like, seriously, guys.
Like, I mean, why wouldn't they just dress the chef?
Hire a chef.
They have been.
They've been dressing the chef,
and it's embarrassing for the lead.
Okay.
I'm all for peace.
I'm all for peace with the CBA, but when you start like can you imagine an intense conversation?
On now a dress code. They've got a CBA dress like you can't
This might be the most embarrassing thing I've heard in a CBA in
History, there's no dress code.
There is no more dress code.
Can you imagine top lawyers getting together
and having this discussion?
Can you wear sneakers with the suits?
Who brought this up?
I want to know who brought this up.
Yeah, but what has been the dress code?
A suit-ish, suit no tie.
No longer required to dress in any specific way. I don't know.
Let me ask you guys, would you make your guys still, would you still say to your team we're
dressing up here or do you just not care? Just, just look like a pro, right? At the end of the day,
just look like a pro. My team's still dressing up. I think it's Bush league. I really do. I think
they, I think, I don't think it should be written there
I think the team should deal with their own players and say hey we expect you to dress when did this when did this
Become important like some players
Watching Siddler and McDonald my heroes. I don't ever recall once wondering what they're wearing to the game
It used to be a big part of our pregame show I don't ever recall once wondering what they're wearing to the game.
It used to be a big part of our pregame show with, with Ron McClain and grapes. Oh, look
at the grapes. We could be blaming grapes on this one. I don't know. Grape said it right.
It'll get the boys coming in looking good. I love great comments on hey two minutes for looking great.
That was the locket.
Coil to Columbus by the way. Yeah.
Who?
Charlie Coil.
Charlie Coil.
To Columbus from Colorado.
To Columbus. Alright another guy off my list.
Why?
Because they need the money. Colorado needs the space.
And Columbus needs NHL players. Why would Columbus take them?
Did they not watch them play last year?
Listen, maybe you got to get to a floor, too.
Yeah, I heard they were in the hunt for the kid on the blue line.
I heard they were in Dobson's race to get him.
There was a report they offered 14 and 20, Verankov was the ask, which found the
aisles.
I liked that package better.
So yeah, I, how much better, how much better did Montreal get Mac?
I think they got a lot better.
I mean, if he puts up, I mean, what's the kid and him and Hudson on the, on the blue
line gives them a whole different dimension as far as block movement. I mean they're very solid D right now. I think it's a great move for them.
And you know Dobson, you know, I'd like to see him play a little tougher game, especially in front
of his own net, but overall they're one of, they should be one of the best puck moving teams in the
league with that addition. Yeah, Matheson moves it and can skate.
That Kaden Goulley is coming along.
Carrier.
Yeah, we hear the Oilers very aggressive
on a goaltender here, but in the meantime,
Trent Frederick signs an eight-year deal officially
at 30.8 million, Mac.
Like, why eight years?
I don't see this.
I don't either. I like Frederick. I like his game. I like his energy. I like his
bite. Who was the guy the islanders signed for seven years? Oh my God.
I had that in my pocket.
You know why I forgot it? Oh my God.
Yeah.
Where did that... So this one is... To me it's kind of goofy. I don't get it.
We haven't had a chance to have you weigh in on some of the other deals.
Were you surprised that Vancouver picked up a Vander Cane?
I don't mind the Cane deal. I mean he's got one year left. They are and you know what? I can't believe it
He's a Canadian
He is a Canadian. So they've got two now on their team. I think
That's great, I'm thrilled second Canadian
There's a good chance he'll be on his best behaviour. I got to be careful.
I was at a reception last night and I had a lot of people chirping me about, you know,
being tough on Vancouver.
I must have said something about Demko at one time, did I?
Anyway, they were giving me the shots last night.
Would you trade him now, Mac, or would you take your chances on him coming back and being
healthy and being the goalie that everybody knows that he can be a top guy?
Look, he looked like he was getting ready to be one of the top goaltenders in the league.
He really did.
This injury is concerning because it seems to have hung around way too long.
I would not be moving them.
If Vancouver have any chance of making the playoffs,
Demko has got to be their MVP or near the top of the list.
He's got to regain his game.
And if he does, they can be a competitive team.
Now, to give me a close on,
like, do you trust Lankin and Shelovs?
Is that-
The depth there yeah she
loves was real good in the American League playoffs but I always find it's
a little different the two leagues you know star in Baltimore when I had him he
was a star the star leader he got called up at playoff time I had him for I think
one round in the pleasant you got called up and itoff time. I had him for, I think, one round in the Pleasant.
You got called up and it killed my team.
I mean, you were that valuable in the American league.
I made it up to you because I brought you to Sportsnet
and look at you, your books now and speaking appearances.
Yeah, I know.
You really have been instrumental in my career. There's no
denying that you and Bob McCowen, he's saying he took brought me down. There's so many people
brought me to sports that, but they weren't, I didn't notice you in there hammering away
at them to get me a new deal.
I was just trying to save more for me. All right. Well, listen, we'll, we'll let you
go because we know you've, uh, you know, you gotta calm yourself down. I know you get nervous
at these things.
I'm yeah, I'm back on at one o'clock, which is in 20, 35 minutes. And I'm, it's, it's
very exciting. It's, it's, you know, it's like you're speaking at a place where there's no hockey, you know,
it's bizarre.
It's, it's the draft and it feels like I'm in some place that has no hockey, you know?
All right.
All right.
All right.
I hope that I hope the GMs are enjoying their war rooms.
Okay.
Well, listen, do we have another show next week?
We got more shows next week.
We have five full shows, including Friday. Friday. Don't go too far. This was it. We need you
once more. We need you once more. Well, you know what? Because I'd like to have a nice
farewell. Yes. You know, that ended on a really positive note because, you know, as guys announced their retirement, I'm really excited about
announcing mine.
Well, on that, we'll leave the listeners and the watchers hanging for at least another
week.
Thanks for having me on. I really appreciate it. It was nice to rush over here to get in
my hotel room and get set up.
Yeah. It's beautiful. Sweet. We can see you on the zoom. It's a beautiful suite. They did a great job. Can't hang up
yellow. I'm speaking at the GW Marriott where I'm speaking, but I'm not staying there. I
can see it from my hotel motel. All right. Doug McLean everybody
Former national hockey league president if you can remember that far back
Does good work for us man. I enjoyed that thoroughly
Yeah, all right
Where else you guys want to go 84 games is crazy. Not really. Yes To more and they like the money. It's it's ten too many before they went to 84
I know but you're just you're just married to it and no you're not
You're just dropping two games from the front albeit exhibition. It doesn't really matter. You still got to get
Dressed you got to go eat a meal. You got to go to the rink. You're just passing it on.
You're just counting more games where the players aren't game ready.
You know, it's just I don't care about whatever.
That's fine. Go ahead.
But it does it.
I don't know.
There's so many bad games over the course of the year
because the guys just can't get up for a hundred options.
You're not getting an argument out of me.
I get all of it, but they're they're gonna find every which way to find a
nickel in a couch. More than ever playoffs are just a different sport. You
cannot bring the pace, intensity, commitment that you saw from Florida, from
all these other teams, getting in front of pucks. You can't do it all year long.
So you're almost playing a different game like as the season gets
long it's just more games for top guys to get injured before the play I just I
don't know I think there's too many games in all the sports except I mean I
like they're being baseball on every night so never baseball and there's a
couple too many in the NFL probably but specifically basketball and hockey I
have always thought there's just way too many games so I don't don't know, you're just kind of devaluing your own.
Owners probably like a couple extra home dates,
I would imagine.
No, but they only get one more, right?
The other guys get them and then you get one more home date.
What does that make you?
Million and a half bucks?
That's what they care about, buddy.
And Playoff Cap, I would say that I'm
Frustrated.
Pretty disgusted that we've come here
and the Leafs never took advantage once and like during their
Prime prime era here perfect time to use their division was all over here
Putting Matthews on LTI are with his
Mystery back or wrist or whatever the hell's wrong with them putting him on LTI are and using that money to hugely improve your team
I take to our you weren't gonna. You weren't gonna take Mathews out of the lineup
and stick him back in right at the playoff.
Why not?
No.
Why not?
No.
They literally did it with Matthew Kachak.
I know, but Kachak had to, he ripped his groin.
And Mathews took an international flight
to see a world-renowned weird
doctor in Germany yeah you know November you had an alibi you had an alibi Sammy
alibi you to think that Tavaris was gonna shut it down and Matthews was gonna
shut it down yeah in November you're right he had to go play for America
you're right you're right you had to go play for America which means more during
else after break let's talk more about Dobson. I'll do game
time too. I'll do the game time too. But I will say we were talking about the grapes
and the this. I love that. Yeah, I can't believe that they're going to make where anything
other than a suit into a hockey game. It's just like the most beautiful tradition ever.
But I remember I think it was the 2010 Olympics. He did like a side by side and he had all the Canadian guys coming in like they're like these beautiful boys
that go over the American guys were like they're like tracksuits. It's like one of my favorite
TV segments. Do Mrs. Penguins will cut will have no track. No dress code next year. That's
he was always his thing was wear whatever makes you feel sexy.
That was his slogan.
When do you ever feel sexier than when you have a suit on?
That's what I would be wearing.
Suit!
You're in the National League!
Put on a suit!
Yeah, I know.
I played my best when I felt sexiest.
Yes!
That's that, boy.
Correct correlation.
It's game time.

And now for your daily J's update, um, the Toronto blue J's with a big win yesterday,
another series win for the J's over the Cleveland guardians who are chasing them in the wild
card.
Uh, they open up a big three game set with the Boston Red Sox this weekend Jose Barrios on the mound tonight to take on
Brian Bayo
the Blue Jays underdogs tonight plus
100 at Fenway one of my favorite places to watch an out-of-market game. I just I'm not in person but on TV
I love watching Fenway games because they're absolutely out of control all the time and
Blue Jays are better than the Red Sox this year
So it should be a big series give me the Blue Jays as an underdog tonight at plus 100 just a slight underdog
And yeah before they had this weekend series before heading to the Bronx for a huge four game set next week
They are only I think three games behind the Yankees for first place in the division
So Jays are looking really good right now good pitching Max Scherzer looked all right in his first game back much to Kippers
Discussed but he's been good. We got Blair and Barker right after our show right? They're gonna get into a little bit of
Kevin Cosman throwing at
Ramirez that's some hockey stuff right there. That's like, that's our nine seconds to Canada USA.
Yeah.
I loved it too.
The thing that I'm dro, okay.
You want to throw it at,
you're gonna throw it at our best player,
it's coming right back at you.
And the thing that drove me crazy about that is,
Vo, the manager for the guards,
is like, screaming at the bench.
It's like, that's like the most unwritten rule and base.
Like, what do you expect?
You're an old school guy, like, give me a break.
Go sit down, go sit down
We'll sit in the truck anyways
That's game Alex game timers over about 365 visit the athlete of stars and find out why it's never ordinary at bet 365
That's 19 plus and Tara only please play responsibly. Okay, let's take a quick break and we'll start teeing up the NHL
entry draft on sports that tonight 7 p.m.
Just
Keep it on sports net from here on end all night. Got Jays on
there tonight. Flick back and forth the drought like my couch tonight does not
know what's coming. No it's gonna be great plus we'll revisit a few names
including one that might have interest to the Calgary Flames when we return to
real kipper and Bourne. Everything you need to know about the Blue Jays,
Blair and Barker.

Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
Welcome back to the Real Kipper and Bourne show
on this Off the Rails Friday.
As a reminder, this hour of Real Kip and Bourne
brought to you by Bet 365, Nick Kiprails,
Justin Bourne, Sammy McKee.
All right, boys.
Defense continues to be at a premium.
We saw Dobson Goaf, pretty expensive
with a couple of first rounders.
Yeah, but I mean
The Habs have a million prospects already their cupboards are extremely
Full it's like top pairing legit right-hand shot the man that's I think you're gonna make I think from here on in
If you look at the next three years it's gonna favor teams that have eaten crap sandwiches because the
Montreal Canadiens have been piling on all these picks and all these prospects
and they've got they got some good young talent and they've got cap space and
like watching the next three years this is their window here.
Right when they wanna add,
they're dropping bad salaries and the cap's going up
and they're gonna be ready to tack on
to what they already got.
Exactly.
And for others who don't have a lot of assets.
Like who?
Yeah.
Who told them? Like is there a certain team you're alluding to?
Yeah.
I'd say.
Do they reside in the city?
The Toronto Maple Leafs for me are a team that with the lack of true assets, either
to trade, you know, on their current roster or bring in off their farm teams.
It's yeah, they got some slim pickings here.
It's going to be interesting to watch Brad Trelev and try to maneuver around the lack
of assets that he has to improve this team.
Yeah, you know, the Leafs have some things still going for them.
Their decor is very good.
They you know, they have some top end guys for them. Their decor is very good.
They have some top end guys.
He does like Rasmus Anderson.
I mentioned to him just before the break.
He's got his eye on Anderson, but so does Vegas, I'm told, as well here.
So I think Craig Conroy is in a really good position here, much like the Islanders with
Dobson.
Could Vegas do Anderson and Marner though?
Like I guess I think with Petrangelo nowhere to be found next season
and and moving one other one other contract yeah one other contract a forward contract.
I will say Leafs still have some picks in this draft right they have the second that they got
from Florida last summer they have a third they have two fifths
they have a six they have a seven like they have no firsts but like they do if they have like you do have to
Lean on your pro scouts to under your amateur scouts to find you a diamond in the rough
They got Matthew Nyes in the second round like yeah, we are talking about anything of substance
Substance will not come to fruition for three years.
It's like, it's not doing anything for you now.
If you draft somebody this year, let's say,
and you draft somebody in the second round
with that Florida pick,
and halfway through the season next year,
whatever player it is, is having a great season
in their respective league.
In junior?
Yeah, you'd be like,
you could be part of a trade for somebody else.
No.
Not to play for the Leafs,
but prospects could trade it all the time, Kipper.
Why are you dismissing that?
Why are you dismissing that?
Because it's just not the way it's gonna work.
It's not gonna be like,
oh my God, that guy that the Leafs got in the second round
who's played 40 games and junior is now
the hottest thing right now for me to move.
He could be part of a trade for a player for your team.
Their assets.
It's a player.
Whether it's before or after.
I mean, listen, it's not, I'm not arguing
that they're in a great position.
I'm not arguing, like that's not my position here.
But I'm just saying.
What you're saying is a wish list beyond belief
that someone's gonna rock anybody's world
for 40 games in junior hockey as a,
let's get them kind of prospect
I don't just say right just say they they built up Minton pretty good right over the last few years and
There's some question marks too on Minton
Whether or not they're gonna keep them move them. How much value does he truly have we saw him eventually leave but
It's it's to be about blue chip
kind of guys and Cowan's one of the most successful junior hockey players in
history right now. Easton Cowan. Yeah. Right. And he would be the first name out
of anybody's mouth. I know. But you're not getting Bo Byron for him, right?
You're not? No. Okay. Oh, you you are but what else are you gonna add to it?
Okay, so
that's a
Byron's name was mentioned alongside Kyru like yeah
I think Elliot mentioned that Kyru would be a potential like if he went to st. Louis like that's a for if I'm Buffalo
I'm like, yeah. Yeah, we got D. Bring me Jordan Kyru
We can use some top-end talent and burners to go with our big D
Yeah, the
Lot of teams and Kyru is the same thing. I I'm I can't remember but I think he's also got a
no trade
Kicking in July 1st. So it's like
Do you want to move him now? Like Patterson or do you want to deal with that later?
It must not like him. I've had him on my trade board earlier in the year. Yeah
He has a no trade clause. I don't know when it kicks in I can try to figure that out. No move or no trade
Trade no trade clause that see kicks in. Yeah, you're right. July 1st. Have we had any
Any word on Tavares?
Did Tavares get a no move for taking a haircut? I'm sure he did, right?
Isn't the whole thing that he wants to be in Toronto
and he wants to control that, my hope is that
the last couple years maybe have some sort of
control flexibility?
If I knew I'm taking a $2 million haircut.
No, listen, there's nothing listed yet on cap wages
But if I'm if I know I'm I'm giving you a two million dollar discount here. Yeah, I don't want the first two years
Guaranteed that you're not trading me. We'll see there's nothing posted on that yet
What did you think though like Montreal gave up two first rounders, 16 and 17, as well
as Emil Heinemann.
I mean that's not nothing, two first rounders, mid round picks.
I personally like the idea of the old, what is it, a bird in the hand is worth two in
the bush?
Like grab yourself a guy that's going to be a top pair right D for 10 years.
20 minutes, right handed shot.
Okay, give it to me.
I like that.
Power play, big shot.
What is Montreal going to do?
Gulley's really good.
Carrier's great.
They got Jack guy if they want to use him.
Matheson skates well.
They, Struble I like too.
Can Dobson get back to 70 points?
Maybe.
You know, I will say the Dobson thing,
if you talk to Islanders fans, is that actually
the best text I got about it from someone was that it looks like he wants to get back
to the bench to check his phone.
Like he seems like intermittently disinterested or whatever, but he is a top end talent.
You know, so it's like, if you have these guys like Bouchard or Nylander or whatever,
there are days where they're not their most competitive
But they're still really good. So I like it for Montreal for the Isles. I'm hoping to see if they can turn out there's
there's a sense out of Florida with the Panthers that there's a window now where
Marchand and Bennett and Echblad
they kind of know where Florida stands and now they're
Echblad, they kind of know where Florida stands. And now they're just gonna make sure
they're covering their options right now,
just to find out what the marketplace is,
because we have heard Echblad's name coming up a little bit
and tied towards a few different hockey clubs here.
And that may just be him taking the time to-
Any clubs in particular?
Explore options. Any clubs in particular? I heard your Maple Leafs for one.
Well, I mean, okay. I don't want to get... Okay, I'm gonna say it. I mean, this is
kind of the MO. Yeah. The true living thing. I've seen this from
Calgary Flames fans. I've've seen this from Calgary flame sands
I've been told this by Calgary if I go on with rustic and rose out there and they always joke about this
He's in on everything. Yeah
But nothing like can we land that plane here?
Can we stop kicking the tire and I don't know what's pick up the time. I don't know or put the tire
I don't know what we get your point. What is the kick thing anyway? I don't know but anyway, it's just like oh
They're in on neck. But oh they loved Marchman. Oh, they love March and oh they love Bennett. It's like yeah, I love they're in on
It's like finish the job
So I am starting to feel that I have heard from a couple of clubs or I'm sorry a couple of players about
little apprehension when it comes to
Thinking about playing in Toronto
Well, I mean is that new did we do that
No, but it's it was it's been heightened through the mishmarner
Scenario, okay, so
Okay, we'll have to wait and see There is a local kid that's names getting mentioned
around here and that's Manjupani.
Yeah, I like him.
Yeah, but the question is, does he like this market?
It's his home.
And some have told me that there might be a little bit of a.
Who, Mitch?
Did Mitch tell you?
Buddy.
Well. He told you. What's that? It's always been a thing here. little bit of Mitch Mitch tell you
Well told you what's that it's always been a thing here guys, there's the pressure thing Ryan O'Reilly didn't want to be here It's not just Marner and it's gonna come here perception around the league
Yeah
I understand that but like the other guys in the league aren't fans of the team that crashed out in the playoffs because the guy didn't
score any goals ultimately
the team ultimately you think that the money will be the deciding
factor usually is for UFAs, but it's just it's something that
it's a double-sided players got to consider now.
No, you can come here and have one good year and cash that chip in and go get money.
This is a great place to get attention if you feel like you're undervalued or if you're
yeah, you want to get that next deal.
But, you know, to me, it's like, Kip, when you played hockey and this is just me and
the way I think about it, you I'm guessing you liked the attention.
You wanted to be a star.
You want people like I would have loved to have played in front of the most it was great
It was it was great in many ways, but it was also like I went through the era with Larry Murphy and
His wife couldn't even sit in the seats. It was yeah really I
Mean it was uncomfortable watching him
Come in every every day knowing that you're gonna hear these
Come in every every day knowing that you're gonna hear these
Stupid UFO like whistling sounds every time he touches the puck. It was it was weird
Yeah, but like I mean, what do you think? You know say Kwan Barclays partner has to go through if he has a bad game in Philly like it's like it's every big market
I know they're passionate fans
I know but Mitch also went through something where he needed police to watch his house
and strangers were dumping garbage in there.
And it's like, it went beyond, right?
It went beyond.
And players hear this around the league.
And the salary cap has forced it to get uglier, right?
Especially when the fans perceive that they're not
Either they're not getting their money's worth or the team isn't getting the value back for the amount of money or it's just a
million playoff failures measured against what the
One is very, you know person specific to how that all shook out. Yeah, that was a
One is very you know person specific to how that all shook out. Yeah, that was a
It was a long drama to say the least now He's doing show hey Otani tours as he's saw in your piece that he was gonna you wanted to go to the city
I don't know Frank and dine friends Frank Sirveli said that there was an unconfirmed report that he's already been in Vegas
Yeah, Mitch and dine
They get in a baseball cap at all the practice
facilities and I don't know if you're a team don't you want to decide right away
it sounds to me like he probably won't you know my everyone and yourself he
could still sign July 1st he's someone comes in with an offer and says if we
don't go in this direction we're're going to go in that direction.
And then he's left with a hard, hard question to answer.
Yeah.
Well, I mean, I don't think we're any,
any new information on that, right?
It seems like Vegas right now is the front runner.
Have you heard anything different than that?
I, I hear Dallas, if they can maybe make a few
significant changes.
I don't know where that leaves Jason Robertson.
But no, I just, I think that there'd be a lot of insiders
who'd be sour if Mitch waited until middle of July.
If they wanna be at the cottage,
but they wanna be done with it.
If Florida loses Eklad and Marchand,
yeah, there's a lot of money in Florida now. If Florida loses Ekblad and Marchand,
there's a lot of money in Florida now.
There you go.
Oh my God.
Make it happen.
Make it happen.
Do it.
I dare you.
Oh my God.
I would-
It would be fun to watch.
No, I would literally hate doing this show every day
next year if he signed in Florida.
And they're just lighting it up.
And Kipper's like, I told you.
And I'm like, oh my God.
If they lose Bennett and Ekblad for Marner,
they would be making their DNA different in a way
that least fans would probably be OK with.
They're not leaving Bennett.
Losing Bennett.
No, they're not.
He's already yelled that they haven't lost.
Yeah.
Paterka, anything else on?
I like him.
Yeah.
Yeah, I like him.
It's hard to find natural scores.
Timmy, you know we joke about, oh, that's the most Carolina player.
Like, that's the most Utah player to me is Peturka.
It's like, yeah, there's the 30 best forwards in the league, and he's a little below that,
and he's good, and he fits in with that whole crop of guys there who are good, but okay.
People I thought were...
They need a top end guy there.
I thought people were...
Cool, it could be that.
...quick to jump on the Buffalo got fleeced scenario. That was like the popular thing to say
I don't mind their return. Well, I I'm not a
Huge out-of-market Utah watcher, but people seem to really like that Kasser Lang and Shane Shane Don't skip Josh Jones
He's a decent prospect six six to twenty or something. He's twenty-four rising gave up on him
He's six five to ten. He scored 29 points last year in 82 games.
Like he's played 150. Yeah, he is. A lot of these guys don't find it till their late 20s is deep. He's 25.
He could be a really good fit for them for Buffalo to go with all the other like offensive talents
in Dulleen, Power and Fire. Are we going to see another major trade before the actual draft starts
or you think... I want all the trades. I love trades. This is the best. Shuffle the deck of the league.
Sir, you think I want all the trades. I love trades.
This is the deck of the league.
Let's go.
Buddy, less lengthier contracts in the next CBA.
I think there's going to be a lot more movement down the road.
Six year terms, seven for your own.
How much time do we have Derek?
Okay, quickly.
Luke Fox just text me and said, listen, you guys, Tiberius is a full
no move clause in your one through two modified no trade clause clause five team listen years three to five. There you go
Okay
