Starting point is 00:00:00 All right, let's kick her up for the national hour of our program. Nickyos-Justin-Borne, Sammy McKee, Derek Brandeo, Jake the Snake Schultz. We're live on Sportsnet 650 in Vancouver, Sportsnet 960 in Calgary, and always streaming on Sportsnet Plus, also available on Spotify, Apple Podcast, YouTube. of real kipper and born brought to you by bet three six five if you've missed it news out of friday afternoon easter seals tournament the real kipper and born line on fire with a combined 15 points i think that's a bit generous but we can say that no one was there i know for sure i had two and three i was one and four i think you were you're you had to be two and three i was just go with it
Starting point is 00:00:56 Just go with it, go with it. Now, we did show highlights in our first hour. And we're not showing them again. We won't painfully put them on for you in the second hour. Unless you want to show the one of me wiping out, then that's okay. I did get a tweet from our good friend, Eddie O. Oh, yeah. A text or a tweet?
Starting point is 00:01:17 A text. Oh, okay. Yeah, text. I don't think Eddie O is Twitter. No, no, no. Saying that I should be fine for showing those highlights. Agreed. Totally.
Starting point is 00:01:26 Agreed. Such an embarrassing. Agreed. Agreed. You can't find them. They're on, like, did somebody post them? Yes. Just our wonderful social team.
Starting point is 00:01:37 Just to torture us a little further. I'm proud of our chemistry continuing on the ice. I will say that there is a lesson in all of this that competing together and playing professional sports or like any kind of sports, it brings you closer together. I was super fun, man. And like, I would say that like the closest we've ever been was. out in the ice. I think the hugs we had after and in the having a couple beers at the table after
Starting point is 00:02:02 and just having some lunch. I just tighten the group up a little bit. Can't beat it. That's big. A shout out to Eric Lindross who's been doing this for, I don't know, 15, 16 years now, I guess. And they've raised millions of dollars, including on the weekend. I think there were close to 800,000. Wow.
Starting point is 00:02:16 A shout out to Jerry Coglund's foundation as well that has contributed an extraordinary amount of money as well. And a lot of the NHLers, yourself included, everyone who gave their time, you know, Adam Graves and Getslaff and Colby and Verstieg and go down the list, those guys put in their time. I wrote a book called Undrafted. That was before Friday, where I went. You ruined your book. First overall, yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Even after we told them not to take you and they still did. So I will have to update that book, I think. Drafted in brackets once. Yeah, once. First overall, not a big deal. We did spend the first hour on our Leaf Edition talking about a team that is underwhelming their fan base. Yeah, loose.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Same thing could be set out west with the Edmonton Oilers. Yeah. We're going to welcome in Rob Brown. We've had him on the show before. Covered the team and he is ready to go here. Oh, nice. Howdy. Edmonton Oilers analyst for Chad.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Let's welcome in Rob Brown. Brownie. It's been a while since we've had you on. And it's a better mood, I think, with oiler fans. And I don't know where you want to start this. We just spent an hour talking about the Leafs underachieving. Where do you want to start with the Oilers today? Well, everywhere.
Starting point is 00:03:40 The coaching hasn't been as consistent as we've seen before. You know, a lot of line changes earlier in the season. I don't think the oil is really at any set lines about 11, 12 games into the year and I think Knoblock is a fantastic coach but sometimes you overcoach and you throw the fact that accountability there's been a number of players
Starting point is 00:04:03 who have underachieve making big mistakes over and over again and not being held accountable. So it starts with coaching. Then it goes to your superstars. Connor and Leon arguably the best two in the world have been fantastic on the power play, been great on the penalty kill, but five on five not playing to the potential
Starting point is 00:04:21 that they are. I mean, Connor McDavid's minus six on the season. That's not good enough when you're the best player in the world. You go to kind of role player. I mean, Nugent Hopkins is having a great year offensively minus 11. On the back end, you got Evan Bouchard minus 11. Echo minus 9. That's your number one pairing. And none of the defense have been good enough. And then you go in net and And goaltending, I think, what is it? I got Skinner at a 889 save percentage in the backup at 836. So this isn't one or two things that have gone wrong for the Oilers.
Starting point is 00:04:59 This is a team with high expectations. It is Stanley Cup or in their minds failure that have gotten off to a really, really slow start that has a fan base here in Edmonton both angry and nervous. and we were only 16 games into this season. I opened it up for you to where you wanted to go, and you painted this an amazing brush with one, just one stride. Here's where we're at. But I want to go back to your first comment,
Starting point is 00:05:33 because I'll be honest with you, the last place I thought you'd ever start is coaching. So I just want to expand that a little bit more here. And just in terms of Brownie, I mean, you played the game a long time, And you were a top player, including an all-star with Mary Lemieux. And is that something that your gut is telling you? Are you hearing that the players are a little frustrated with such, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:01 with the movement, the changes? Like, yeah, coaching is fascinating to me. It would all be me. Yeah, it would all be perception. I'm watching from afar. I don't have access to the players, nor do I want. on him. I analyze what I see. I think, again, I think Knoblox
Starting point is 00:06:20 a fantastic coach. He took this group back to back to the Stanley Cup finals and they are really three wins away from two Stanley Cup championships. But this season started uneven with line changes. Not just every game. It was partway through the first
Starting point is 00:06:36 period they've already changed lines. And then the second period they've changed. We have at the beginning of our show on Chad, we go through the lineup and I always giggle. I'm like, it doesn't matter. These lines aren't staying together. So it's a team that has a number of new players. They've got some young players.
Starting point is 00:06:53 They want to be integrated. They've got the kid, Tamaschuk, who's coming over from the Swedish League. They've got Mangiapani. They got Rosavavovovic. I always struggle with that. Roslovich. So they have all these new players, but they're not getting chemistry because shift to shift, they're changing lines.
Starting point is 00:07:12 And if you watch the Oilers play right now, there is really a lack of communication with defensively. A great example, Kail McCar last game, scores two goals the exact same way. He is the best defenseman in the world and no one's close. And back-to-back goals within minutes, he's left wide open. Those are communication problems. Those are a line mates.
Starting point is 00:07:34 Somebody's missed an assignment. And to me, part of that could be, well, I go here and he usually goes there. So I do think that there's been too much line juggling. I think that they have overplayed their superstars. And that's an easy problem to, or that's an easy fix when you're the coaching stuff. You look down on 97, 29, give us our best chance. We're going to keep putting them out there. But then you're taking away what other players' roles are.
Starting point is 00:08:03 There's no identity. There's no identity on the third line or a fourth line with Connor and Leon penalty killing. I mean, you know what it's like, Nick. If you are a fourth line guy that's penalty killing, that is your identity. You will block the puck with your face because you know that's the only way I'm going to stay in the league. That's the only way I'm going to get extra ice time. So you've taken that away from them. And the accountability is the big one.
Starting point is 00:08:27 There's been a number of veteran players. And Evan Bouchard's had a really, really slow start to the year for what he's capable of doing. And the same mistake over and over. But there hasn't been an accountability. He makes the mistake, pinches when he shouldn't, turns the puck over when he shouldn't, then he's out again the next shift.
Starting point is 00:08:46 So those are all coaching things. I know that there's more problems than that. And I do believe Noblock's a good coach, and I don't think there's any coaching controversy here. He will be here for a number of years and hopefully be part of the Stanley Cup winning team. But I think there's problems from top to bottom right now, 16 games into the season.
Starting point is 00:09:04 I was reading the Mark Specter column on what's going on with the yeah pretty pretty tough on the boys on the lack of physical play and you know kind of drew my attention to it the only team of the nchl without a fighting major uh you lose perry kane connor brown arvidson guys with a little bit of sandpaper do they miss that is that something that this team now lacks that they didn't last year yeah i've said for the last number of years the oilers have been the the bullies of the western conference they were physical they were nasty they were mean. Kane led the way. Perry,
Starting point is 00:09:41 whose gamemanship is second to none in the national hockey. Even Connor and Leon, they give more than they get. But this team without Perry, without Arvetson, without Kane, is a quiet team. And when, I mean, this is a team's gone back-to-back years
Starting point is 00:09:58 of the Stanley Cup finals. I'm sure it's tough to play on a Tuesday in New Jersey. It's tough to have the same emotional investment in the game. that's where we saw in the past where Corey Perry would go out and start a fight or he would go out and accidentally on purpose fall on a goalie and just bring a scrum and all of a sudden there's energy on the bench.
Starting point is 00:10:18 I think that they believe that Trent Frederick would bring that and he hasn't. And if it's not Frederick, then I guess it's a nurse and he hasn't had the same investment yet this year either. And then after that, you're looking through their lineup. It is not the same physical team that we've seen in the past. So yes, I do believe that this team right now
Starting point is 00:10:41 is trying to find its identity and the team bully that it used to be that hasn't shown up yet this year. Would a return of Zach Hyman, which I think is fairly close help, and I believe is that Yanmark's in, maybe there's a little there. I'm looking for you here.
Starting point is 00:10:56 Is there more coming? It will help. Yan Mark, he's a pest. He's trusted by the coaching staff plays. in any sort of defensive situation that the coach feels they need someone out there. But he has that grin on his face and he gets into the grill of the opposition, which creates emotion. Hyman's going to help simply because he's an elite hockey player.
Starting point is 00:11:20 I don't think you're going to see the playoff Hyman where he led the league in hits, but you do know there's a tenacity about his game. So they will be better when those guys get back. But if you're a team that's waiting for two players to become a better hockey, hockey club? Well, your aspirations of being a Stanley Cup champion isn't there. Now, I said this team is a Stanley Cup contender. I don't change
Starting point is 00:11:43 that. I believe they're an elite team. I don't change that. I felt they would come in second in the division by season's end. I don't change that. But they have underachieve and it's from top to bottom. It's not goaltending. It's not Bouchard. It's not the superstar.
Starting point is 00:11:59 It's from top to bottom. This team has not played anywhere close to their potential. So that means if you're still confident that the Oilers are this team that you think that they are, that that includes Stuart Skinner being there at the end? I do. I've said it. I mean, he took them to game seven, two years ago, took them to game six last year. Does he have hiccups?
Starting point is 00:12:22 Yes. Is he the best goalie in the world? No. Is there players out, goalies out there better than him? Yes. But to find a goaltender, I think he's at $2.5 or $2.6 million. This is a team already up to the cap. Right now, Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard are part of the issues for the Oilers.
Starting point is 00:12:43 I mean, last game, the start of the third period down 6-1, they gave up a 2-1-1 to Nathan McKinnon. He walked from his own blue line all the way down and scored. That's not on your goaltender. That's on your defense. So will Bowman continue to look for an upgrade in that? I would imagine he would because that's your job. upgrade on defense, upgrade on forward. I believe that Stuart Skinner will be here at season's end.
Starting point is 00:13:10 Will they try to find someone to complement them? Maybe. Maybe that's the way they go. I just, I have a hard time seeing them going out and making a trade for a goaltender that is a lot better than Skinner just because they don't have the cash to do it. And money in, you can need money out. and I don't know if the team is deep enough to be able to pass money out giving up a pretty good hockey player
Starting point is 00:13:35 to get a goaltender. So I do believe Stuart Skinner will be here at season's end. You know, at the end of the day, teams like this go as good as far as their best players. We spent the first hour talking about Austin Matthews and he's just not quite the same this year. I did a segment like a week ago on McDavid and how he's at 1100 points
Starting point is 00:13:53 and he's this great player. And I had an Edmonton media member text me and say he's actually not been that great this year. or his touches are off, something's not the same. Is there something to that that maybe McDavid is not having, I don't know, doesn't quite look like the same guy, or is that just crazy talk? It's funny when you said that the team's best players.
Starting point is 00:14:13 I remember, and I'm sure Nick does too, when your team used to struggle, we're going to make changes, and they would send down a guy from the fourth line. All right, we're going to show you. Like, the guy played six minutes. Connor McDavid has had flashes of brilliance this show. year. I think like all superstars, their bar is so high. There are times that I've seen
Starting point is 00:14:35 Connor and I've done every single game he's played where he can go a month, a month and a half without making a bad pass. His execution is incredible. It's like he and Leon, every single pass is perfect. I have seen passes bobbled this year. I've seen him turn the puck over, which is shocking, on the power play, turn the puck over. I think sometimes when your team is struggling. Superstars will try to do more than they should. Connor will try and beat three guys on a one-on-three, simply because he's trying too hard.
Starting point is 00:15:09 I think Connor and Leon both have been good this year, but like all superstars, their bar is higher. And I don't think either one has reached their bar yet this year. Their power plays incredible, but five-on-five, neither player has been close to what they're capable of. So that's why I have belief there's all other teams going to get where they have to go because their best players have yet to be
Starting point is 00:15:35 as good as they're capable. Brownie, we saw a little bit of that fire on the ice between an exchange between McDavid and Bouchard that went viral. And we had a conversation earlier on, you know, I'll take anything compared to nothing at all out of a guy But how did it play out out there in terms of reading what maybe Conner's going through right now with this hockey club?
Starting point is 00:16:08 I mean, you probably read the same there as it does here. I think everyone right now is so angry at everything that anything that comes on. They're like, oh, look, they hate each other now or they're not friends anymore. You know as well as I do, players get into arguments all the time. There's fist fights in practice. and when things aren't going well, it magnifies it. I think Connor McDavid is the ultimate competitor. I don't know him, but I imagine he wants to beat his mom when they play crib.
Starting point is 00:16:34 Like he just, he wants to win everything he does. 15-2. And this season has not come anywhere close to the way they wanted it to start. For great players, and I don't know this because I wasn't, but I would imagine great players expect greatness every time they step on the ice, whether it's a game in practice. So if something gets messed up in practice, they probably don't understand why you can't do this perfectly
Starting point is 00:16:58 because I can. To me, I think there's frustration. The 9-1 drubbing last night, it's funny, or a couple nights ago, Leon said we needed a slap in the face. That's what we needed. Teams will have bad nights, and when those nights happen, you forget about it, but you don't forget about how they respond the next time they play.
Starting point is 00:17:19 And I know from my experience, I hated playing against a team that just got embarrassed. Because the next time they step on the ice, you expect their best. So to me, I'm not going to look so much at what happened two nights ago. To me,
Starting point is 00:17:31 where the Edmonton Oil is ours are as a hockey club, I look at what happens tonight in this game against Columbus. If there isn't a response, well, then you've got issues. So I would expect you are going to see the best oil team possible tonight. And if not,
Starting point is 00:17:46 I think there'll be more questions tomorrow morning. Yeah. I mean, I totally agree with that. And that oilers team, you know, digging into some of the numbers on them, they still create a ton. The power plays nasty. Like, some pucks are going to go in.
Starting point is 00:17:59 They're going to be just fine. When you look around the Pacific, like, I don't feel any different about the Oilers. Like, they're still probably the favorite. You know, Vegas is obviously very good. I mean, am I alone and thinking that the Oilers are going to sort this out here? I think they will. I think they and Vegas will battle out for first in the division. I know that it's been a really nice start for a couple other teams.
Starting point is 00:18:25 And Anaheim, I mean, they got a really good coach. They're a bunch of good young hockey players. They got a good goalie, good coach. They will compete. Over at 82 game season, I just don't think there's a team in the Pacific that is better than Vegas and Edmonton. And they will have their spurs, but I don't think they're better than those two teams. And whichever team comes out of the Pacific will have to be either Edmonton or Vegas or both. I think the others will be there.
Starting point is 00:18:50 get healthier. They'll figure it out. When you have the best two players in the world, you have the best power play in the world. You should be competitive each and every night. But the thing that scares you is in 16 games, they've won four in regulation. And of those four, one of them was against the Montreal Canadiens where the referees
Starting point is 00:19:08 helped. That was a poorly refereed game. The others were badly outplayed until the refs got involved. So they have a lot more to give and it starts hopefully tonight. Yeah. And you mentioned the player in the world who's got five goals and is on pace
Starting point is 00:19:24 for 26 Brownie. So what is he not doing? Those are under any circumstances. Those just aren't numbers. And say what you will. Is he a goal score? He's not a goal score. Is he natural? He's not
Starting point is 00:19:40 natural, but 26 ain't right for Connor on a pace. Well, no, it's funny. We have our own podcast with Shogger and Stradi And at the beginning of the year, McDavid came out and said he's going to shoot more this year. He wants to show that 60 wasn't an accident. So then we're predicting, okay, how many goals? The best in the world just said he's going to score again this year.
Starting point is 00:20:00 So we're going to have 60s. He's going to have mid-50s. So I think all of us are shocked that the Pucks hasn't gone in the net for him. Early in the year, he turned down shots, but he should enough. We watched McKinnon was just here the other night. and he had a couple two-on-ones, and there was no thought of passing. I mean, when you got a shot like McKinnon, you go in and shoot. I think that maybe Connor needs to be a little bit more like that.
Starting point is 00:20:27 I mean, Connor's got an incredible wrist shot, snapshot. Shoot more. Go into a game thinking, I'm going to have 15 shots tonight. I mean, he's capable of having that many if he wants to. I do believe he'll get on track offensively. I think partly goaltenders have been good against him. He's had some breakaways that he hasn't scored. which is uncommon for him.
Starting point is 00:20:49 But I just think he, like the entire team, has been a little off. And as you know, when your best player is a little off, your team's going to be a little off too. But I do believe both Connor and Leon will get better as this moves on. And maybe tonight is the night that McKinnon was having a nice year, not a great year. Then the last two games got nine points. I think that's what you're going to see from Connor McDavid,
Starting point is 00:21:12 hopefully sooner rather than later. So, J.B, the best player in the world needs to be more. more like the second best player in the world. Yeah, I like that. I like that theory. Hey, Rossevick's been a good ad, eh? Like, I mean, just in terms of someone else
Starting point is 00:21:25 who can make plays and put the puck away? It's funny. When they traded for him, I remember Roslavik when he got traded to the Rangers. And I think, well, that's a great pickup. That kid's got skill. But it didn't work out.
Starting point is 00:21:37 Then he was in Columbus. And then he was in Carolina, and he's a healthy scratch in the playoffs in Carolina. I'm like, why? Because I remember watching him. and this kid's got, he's skilled. I guess sometimes you wake up with an opportunity realizing maybe this is your last one.
Starting point is 00:21:53 Right. And you start to put things together. He's been very good. The one thing that has really helped him have success, when you play with Connor and or Leon, most players, as soon as they go with one of those two guys, the first thought is get them the puck. I've got the puck, where's Leon?
Starting point is 00:22:09 I've got the puck, where's Connor? Roslovick hasn't. He's got the puck. He's looking for the best play. And sometimes he's looked off Leon. and found someone else, which he's got the confidence to do that. And he's got the skill set that when he makes that decision,
Starting point is 00:22:23 it's good enough. Roslovick has been very good for the Oilers. Now, does he have the consistency? I don't know, because there's got to be something that he's on his fifth team here already. But so far, he has probably been over the last, whatever games he's been here, he's been their most consistent player.
Starting point is 00:22:40 So I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but he has been very, very good playing with Leon Drysettel. well we'll keep a close eye on the scoreboard for those of us that are going down to the hockey Hall of Fame tonight over the Oilers tonight against Columbus but we'll see how we feel tomorrow on our national show brownie great stuff as always man I always appreciate your time thanks for doing this thanks guys thanks guys thank you guys I'm like a high bar from a guy who's like you know I wasn't a great player got like 45 goals in here or something pretty great player I just talk about the Oilers. Like I've said before, I'm just so sick of this little song and dance we have to do every year. Well, we've got to do the slow start thing every year.
Starting point is 00:23:24 It's like, guess what? He's probably right. Everything he said, they're probably going to figure it out, but we don't get to be mad at it because they're going to be good again. It's like, just be good for the start. Is there any way you could quickly look at their record last year? And was their record better now than it was last year or the year before?
Starting point is 00:23:42 Because this is the third consecutive. One second. How many bad starts in a row are we at now? November 10th last year, the Edmonton Oilers. Worst. I bet. No, I think better. We're 7.7 and 1.
Starting point is 00:23:57 I believe they are 7.7 and 1. I think they're 6, 6 and 4. Yeah. So they're 500 just like last year. Exactly the same. Yeah. That went to us down like a final. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:07 Okay. And they're just going to do the same thing. But we don't get to talk about it. We can't be like, oh, the oilers are no good because they are good, but they don't play good. It's really annoying. So if we go back, hold on, if we go back two years, they were two nine and one. They were putre.
Starting point is 00:24:21 That's when, that's when Woodcroft got fired and they brought in Knoblock. Right. Right? And they also went to the Cup final that year. Yeah. Game seven of the final. So we're not going to go ahead and panic on the old oil. I was cutting the audio.
Starting point is 00:24:35 Did you guys play the Knoblock goaltending thing with Brownie? Do you guys want to play it? I do. I do. I absolutely want to do it. So there's a couple different knoblock clips from after the game. on against the avalanche one that includes one that includes intro music now i guess one that one that includes the reporter's question and his answer and then one that is similar to that
Starting point is 00:25:00 a shorter one on golden you want to start with just how he's feeling overall sure clip one yeah from knoblock derrick so we're 20% of the way during the season and i feel as if after several games this season even a couple wins we've sort of been asking you about well you know isn't there more to give is can't the team be more thorough like do you feel there's still a lot more to give and what's going to get them to that point absolutely there's lots and I think we've been always probably a little overconfident that things will work out and we've you know this team's been in trying times several times over the years and they've always worked it out just because they've found a way to play better step up
Starting point is 00:25:54 and I think right now in the last couple weeks I've seen we've been just kind of waiting for that moment to happen and I think tonight would be I definitely hope this is rock bottom for us I hope this wakes up a lot of guys. And we understand that we've got a lot of growing to do to become a good hockey team like our expectations are for ourselves. Do you think there's any chance that they don't? I think the problem when you're bad 20% into the season is that what if something then goes wrong?
Starting point is 00:26:33 McDavid gets hurt and misses two months. Or, you know, you leave yourself exposed. 30 teams I can say the same thing, right? But that's it. Like, if you play with fire, then you can go, oh, well, this happened and it killed us rather than just being good when you're healthy, which they've been mostly. I just think the odds against a third consecutive bad start like this ending up being a Stanley Cup final. Like, come on. You know, that in itself, if you did the odds of them at their record now to still end up in the, you'll be like, that's almost like striking lightning now.
Starting point is 00:27:10 It just doesn't happen this way. It's not supposed to happen this way. The element of physicality, we talked about with Brownie there, no Perry, no Kane, no Arvidson, no Brown, and you're placing it with Savoy and Howard and Magiapane and Roslavik. Look what Cory Perry's doing right now. He's got more goals than all their new guys combined. But just he's just a gamer.
Starting point is 00:27:32 At the end of the day, he's just a gamer. Why did they not keep him? Was it money, I guess? Yeah, money. Because he was A frustrating necessary Playoff element for them. Three?
Starting point is 00:27:46 Did he get three or? He's got seven snipes in ten games. I'm just quickly checking. Tell me how much money he makes. Sam, are you on it? Yeah, I am. Signed a one year. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:57 Two million dollar contract. Oh, for the lot. Which it includes an additional $2 million in performance. Yes. But the AAV is $2 million. So it's like $4 million. Yeah. But two.
Starting point is 00:28:10 against the cap, I guess. Yes. They're just so tight, right? Yeah, but, I mean, you dig a couple out of the couch cushions to maybe keep Corey Perry around, I don't know. He was decent playoffs, I recall. We just spent a good portion in our first hour
Starting point is 00:28:24 talking about sometimes guys just lose the edge no matter what. They can talk about it all you want, and it's still not there when you need it. Man, this guy's, he plays the game still like he's, freaking 21. What an admirable trade it is in hockey to just be someone who's just
Starting point is 00:28:45 still cares. Just wants to win every time they're on the ice. Kind of like us. Kipp had that. Oh boy. Now, Knoblock was also asked
Starting point is 00:28:55 about Skinner. On whether or not the team still has confidence in them. Did you get that clip? We had that clip. The finals, of course. Is this team losing some belief here when it comes to the goaltending situation?
Starting point is 00:29:10 Um, I, I don't believe so. Oh. Oh. Wow. Oh, man. I don't believe so. Not all at once. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:28 I don't believe so. Uh, keep that drop, please. Imagine Skinner watching or listening to that. Yeah. See the exact. Second. But the thing, like, again, we're doing this, and it's like, yeah, and they're going to go on a 16 game one in the street.
Starting point is 00:29:46 I have about Rob Brown. He's the only guy I've ever heard, be like, yeah, I think it's going to be Skinner, and Skinner's the guy. That's just the way it's going to be. Gregor does that too old is. But, like, I just read the article. LeBron had a good article in potential team Canada, goalies or whatever.
Starting point is 00:29:58 He didn't name him, did he? Well, just the word Stuart Skinner being in there is like, what does this guy have on people? I love the guy. I don't believe so. But the goaltending does not speak to any of this. Now my two thoughts on this Give me Bennington 10 times
Starting point is 00:30:16 You don't watch the game very well My two thoughts on Knoblock talking about Skinner is He's done He'll never recover off of that Sorry you're saying that that's what you just heard I'm saying that If I'm listening like Skinner
Starting point is 00:30:34 And I hear a coach I'm done he went full shell and keef right how are you supposed to come back to work every day and feel like this guy is is backing you or the team's back in you like you you're going to practice now until things dramatically change maybe with a winning streak or you know the next few games and you can change that energy around it's got to be a horrible feeling going to the rink like you're a man on an island right now like yeah no i'm just fibbed or whatever but like of course we believe in him but but doesn't he also want to push his pressure on this guy he's doing it yeah he's doing it well i think he's on notice now that it's like you i think so you know i think so to sort this out or something yeah we're on we're on we're on a connor ingram count down here now yeah right because he's he playing in the minors like i feel like he's probably anyway now would skinner's experience the last few years of
Starting point is 00:31:33 people bailing on them they're jumping on his bandwagon and jumping off would he just or this would just be part for the course for him this is the binnington thing with team Canada where it's like we've seen him do it when it counts so no one's too worried you know like we just we'll figure it out what he's just the worst goal in the league it's fine his stats in playoffs last few years yeah they they could have used a better one but he has had some great stretches he owns dallas stars uh game time game time it's game time present of my bet three six five visit the app for the latest odds and see why it's ever ordinary at bet three six five Mr. 19 plus, Ontario only, please play responsibly.
Starting point is 00:32:13 So you mentioned where the Oilers would be after a third straight bad start about being the favorites to make it to the final. They are not the favorite to make it to the final from the Western Conference. The Colorado Avalanche are a clear favorite plus 275 right now to win the Western Conference, represent them in the Stanley Cup final. Vegas ahead of them at plus 400, and then the Edmonton Oil is coming at third at plus 425. So there's two teams ahead of them.
Starting point is 00:32:38 like, well, we can't get ahead of Edmont. Dallas is plus 500. Well, I mean, why would they be? They just beat the brakes off them every time they play them in the playoffs. So it's like, I don't know. And then it goes down the list. The stars are plus 600. Jets are 9 to 1. Mammoth 13 to 1. Kings 13 to 1. Docks, 16 to 1, wild
Starting point is 00:32:56 22 to 1. Canucks 3 to 1. What do you make of this? They look very good. They've won 7 in a row. They're flying around. That Leo Carlson at that size putting up points like he is. This is interesting. Who do you think? the favorite to represent the Eastern Conferences in the final.
Starting point is 00:33:13 I'll go off the board. Is it not Carolina or New Jersey? It's Carolina. Carolina at plus 340, New Jersey at plus 4.25. And who's their goalie? Who's their goalie this weekend? Brandon. The guy that's I rented for the zigzags tonight.
Starting point is 00:33:28 Oh my goodness. Where did he come from? He needs to go back where. Listen, I'm sure he's a great guy. But I thought the goals that went in. He looked pretty rough. And how many times you fall down? The Panthers are plus 475. You could do worse than that bet.
Starting point is 00:33:46 Tampa 6 to 1 leaves 7 to 1. That is, you want to light some money on firebed on that one? Canadians 850 plus 850, cap 16 to 1, Ottawa, 17 to 1, Rangers, 18 to 1, blah, blah, blah. Down the list they go. So that's interesting to me. That was game time, visited by bet 365, visit the app for the latest dogs and see why it's ever ordinary.
Starting point is 00:34:07 at 3-6-5, Mr. 19-plus, until it only, please play responsibly. The one, the one thing that I think Lee fans and Euler fans can also look at, too,
Starting point is 00:34:19 is just the fact that everybody's just clumped in here, right? At the end of the day. Tonight, they're in a playoff spot. Just nobody's good? Yeah, like, you don't know, like Seattle right now. If you're the Oilers looking up,
Starting point is 00:34:36 you're wondering, you know, San Jose Sharks and... Do you know that 28% or more than 28% of games this year have gone to overtime, the most ever in NHL history by good distance? Incentivize it not to happen. Make it three points of regulation. Totally. Why are we waiting so long? Push for that extra point.
Starting point is 00:34:56 You mentioned Seattle. I was flicking back and forth with Seattle Dallas last night. Matt Murray in net for the Cracken. Still Matt Murray in there. Biggest chest protector. in league history. It can't be regulation size. Elbow pads inside his hands.
Starting point is 00:35:12 Anyway, let's go to break. But three on three is unwatchable for me. Hey, hey, I was at the attack night's game on Saturday at the Loemly Day short. 42 shots apiece? I would tell you that that three on three was not unwatchable. Coaches haven't got to the junior level yet. They were flying around. It's awesome.
Starting point is 00:35:28 Okay, we'll take a quick break when we return. Still more to go around the national hockey league, Connor Bedard. All of a sudden making some serious. serious noise. Celebrini. Celebrini. Also, in Philly,
Starting point is 00:35:41 did the captain call out one of his young players? We did. Well? It sounds like yes, because I haven't heard the clip yet, but... And we've got to talk about
Starting point is 00:35:49 the team Canada jerseys. And for Sammy, the team Canada jerseys. No, we didn't. Wow. We did on stage with Ryan Gats laugh, but we didn't. Still some meat on the bone
Starting point is 00:35:58 on the real Kipper and Bourne show back after these words. Reminder the set. We're Real Kipperman Bourne brought to you by Bet365. Nick Kippreos, Justin Bourne, MVP from the Eric Lindros, Easter Seals skate, Sammy McKee. Thanks, man. Game winning goal with two and a half minutes to go backhand.
Starting point is 00:36:21 I do love that our guy, Brian Leach, who does a lot of tweeting to the show, grab the gif of McKee falling with the skate guards on. Oh, he did. Yeah, it'll live in infamy forever. That exists now out there. Hey, Sammy. Yes. You're a celebrity now, man.
Starting point is 00:36:35 That's just with the team. territory. Yep, for sure. Totally. You love it, eh? No, I don't. I hate it, actually. No, I just hate that you talk about it. That's what I hate. Interesting comments from the Philadelphia Flyer Captain, Sean Couturee, on Mishkov, who's, you know,
Starting point is 00:36:57 a little snake bitten, not able to put the puck in the net. And I don't know if, I don't know if this is a calling out or not. Okay. Are we going to have a listen first, Sammy? Yes, let's listen to it. He's a great goal scorer and has a lot of skill. I think you just got to find a way to contribute to helping the team win in other ways when you're struggling.
Starting point is 00:37:20 You're not always going to be scoring goals every game. So, you know, I thought he's – I've seen improvement in the way he's not cheating as much and being on the right side of pucks. And, you know, I'm sure it's a little different for him. but, you know, if he sticks to playing, you know, more the right way, I think it's going to be better for the team overall. Have you since a weight off his shoulders a little bit? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:45 And after scoring that goal in Nashville and then tonight as well? I think so. I think you can tell tonight he was trying to make a lot of plays with the puck, holding on to the puck. So, yeah, I think he's definitely, you know, feeling good about himself. I didn't have a problem with any of that. I loved it all. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:02 Do you think that some people think that he called him out? Well, he did. Yeah, to a certain extent, but he was smart enough to do it without stripping him down. He's the captain of the team. Like, I would kill Matthew. For Matthews to say something like that. Like, it's just, he's the captain.
Starting point is 00:38:22 It's a young rookie player on the team. Constructive criticism, which he's probably already said to him privately. Zero problem with it. Loved it, actually. Curious about the season. Meechkov is having and it's very possible that he gets it sorted out and it's no big deal but like if I'm not mistaken like it was the Bajar draft year right and it was kind of like Michikov or Badar which one's going to be better but you you weren't sure if you get him out of Russia so he slipped
Starting point is 00:38:47 that was the issue right but it was like talent wise and stuff it was kind of like yes yeah you're right one but it's more about Russia and now it's like oh he's got eight points and 16 games and the captain doesn't think he's great and he apparently came into camp like 20 pounds overweight or something crazy like it well that's now like the second time that we've heard about issues and practice and the habits because rick tockett did the same thing right but on our show earlier right so it's a real sore spot yeah you know i don't know how much is this just like we grew up around canadian hockey and north american hockey and it's all a lot of you are never
Starting point is 00:39:34 bigger than your team. You fall in line. You do the things. You're humble. You're, you know, you do all these team, team, team things. And that just becomes like Sean Coutier, the way he knows the game. Yeah. You know. And maybe that's not the same. You know what's really hurt
Starting point is 00:39:50 the NHL the last few years? Taking away quality practice time. I don't ever recall hearing teams having little to no practice time anymore to just get some of the fundamentals back during the season and then we're into this load management
Starting point is 00:40:15 and then we got these doctors who think that they know how to win a Stanley cop and all of it and sleep and who goes where and who takes the day off. Like the Leaf's having a day off today. It's just like. Yeah. Well, because it's probably mandated by the league. Why are we surprised when we hear a young kid
Starting point is 00:40:34 not really that great at practice? Well, guess what? He's got much to practice on. They don't practice. We're talking about practice. A very good question is, you know, is what's best for the player's bodies the same as what's best for your team's chances
Starting point is 00:40:50 of winning the Stanley Cup? Because I think there's a lot of development, this whole thing that like sleep doctors we've talked about and rest is a weapon and all these sort of things. And it's like, all that's great. It really helps to know where to stand on the ice. And sometimes if your legs are a little more tired, knowing where to be is better than having perfectly fresh legs.
Starting point is 00:41:08 Correct. So there's some internal debates we had this. I just, I do remember competing in practice and feeling the pressure to compete in practice and not letting my guard down. So if there was a fight in the, if there was a fight in a corner with a defenseman on a one-on-one loose puck battle,
Starting point is 00:41:28 I got to come out with a puck. I'm stressed in that drill because for a split second I got 18 of my teammates watching I've got four coaches and whoever else is up in the stands watching And the pressure not just for you I'm making that guy better
Starting point is 00:41:44 I'll I'll trip you I'll spear you I'll punch you in the head but I ain't losing this battle clean and I don't I don't think they do that anymore maybe they do and I'm not aware of it but I my guess is it's a lot less than when we play probably 15, 20 years ago.
Starting point is 00:42:06 I remember being with Sheldon Keefe and the Marleys and getting into like February March time of year and just being like we need as much rest as possible for the playoffs. However, we need to show them this thing or this system or this whatever and having that debate about what's best for these guys. But by February or March, those type of practices, the battle ones, the compete ones, those are gone. You don't want to hurt your own guy.
Starting point is 00:42:30 you don't want to you know all those sort of things right that's a safety good fight in practice never really hurt a team long term I was good for a couple fights in practice were you a fighter in practice yeah I had a few I think I had three how can you do that and not fight in a game I well I thought like once a year in a game or something when I had to but not for the right reasons no no no for the wrong reasons but usually in practice it was like you know the guy you're sick of his whatever he owes you money I don't need to take a slash in front of my own net during practice All those sort of things. I found out he's dating the same girl.
Starting point is 00:43:04 A lot of reasons. Looking at the NHL's leading scores, very interesting stuff here. McKinnon, shocking, leading the league and scoring. Connor Bedard in second with 25 points. Seven in the last two games? Leo Carlson in tied for second with 25 points. Macklin Celebrini and fourth with 24 points.
Starting point is 00:43:25 William Nealander in 5th with 23. Young kids now taking next steps. Do you want to hear Brad Marchehan is just like the Oracle now of the NHL? He just talks about everything and everybody want to listen. But listen to this clip he had about Celebrating. I love this clip. Mark, you know, he's a new hot thing. You know, you hear a lot about him.
Starting point is 00:43:41 He's playing incredible hockey right now. He's obviously very skilled. But what I really like about his game is just the intensity. He's a dog. And, you know, he hounds a hockey player. He's not shy. You know, going to corners or go to the front of the net. You know, so, you know, he's not one of those guys that waits for the power play.
Starting point is 00:43:58 he plays all night long so he's going to be you know one of the best for a very long time which makes it tough to play against but you know he showed why he's he's an extremely talented player he plays all night long he's got an engine that that's a good line plays all night long right um teammates got the edge teammates those two in milan cortina or cortina milan yeah yeah teammates i don't think the florida panthers thought in what 16 games that Brad Marchand would be their best player in every respect basically
Starting point is 00:44:37 well they probably didn't think that Barkoff wasn't going to play they're battling no question but there's still some a little underachieving going on with the Stanley Cup champions absolutely so you talk about those kids and all of them kind of taking a step
Starting point is 00:44:50 and becoming important which is good for the league let me ask you about staying power which team Anaheim or Montreal all is more likely to be there at playoff time and a good spot and i'm yeah yeah wow really i like them a lot i've watched a few there again they fly around good players young great coach i don't know i just kind of believe in him crider carlson troi terry is a fun line cutter goche leading the nitcher on shots on fire yeah big boy just like carlson flyers gave up on that they couldn't make it work with him give up i think he said bye bye jackson lecombe stud
Starting point is 00:45:26 McHavish, that Beckett Seneca's really big? Yeah, he's lightened it up too. Big. Oshoa General, shout out. They're a big team. A big heavy team. Lauren Ross Johnson, cheese, they are big. I, Truba's been unbelievable this year.
Starting point is 00:45:39 Like, he's had a real turnaround this year. Okay, Chris Kreider. They love him. Yeah. How can they not? All he's huge, he skates fast. He goes to the net, he finishes. Well, Rangers, they're scoring bunches, so they don't need it.
Starting point is 00:45:51 The Leafs missed out on him, Sammy. Yeah. Oh, well. We should have gone after him. Listed on a lot of things. Yes. Hey, before we go, we talked about this on Friday,
Starting point is 00:46:00 or on Thursday how scared I was about the team Canada jersey release. Okay. So what happened? You're just, if you're watching on SportsNet Plus, you're seeing what we... Just like, is that even worse than you thought?
Starting point is 00:46:12 Oh, I mean, so white, Jersey, passable. Although the stripes don't go all the way around and there are two different colors. The different color stripes is bizarre, but anyway. What's with the black now? The top two.
Starting point is 00:46:24 I think that when you're designing a jersey that is going to be worn by so many people and it's like it's a whole nation can we have the regular person test where you like go to like a sports bar or go to somewhere where like you know a rink where there's like hockey players around and you hold up these jerseys
Starting point is 00:46:45 and you're like what do you think of this and everyone would have been like no don't do that it is horrible No, it's not that bad. It is so bad. I think the Youngs would think it's cool. No.
Starting point is 00:46:59 Okay, if you think it's cool, please tweet me or DM me or whatever. They just, all these, like, future, like, they think it's like, we've got to be futuristic. We got to be, got to get something new out there. Less is always more with jerseys, and I don't know why they think they have a Star Wars leaf to make it look cool. It's horrible. To me, our national colors are red and white. Yes. If you want to have a little black trim, totally fine a day.
Starting point is 00:47:22 A little gold here. Did your mom make you wear stuff that you hated when you were a kid? No, listen, I've always had impeccable fashion sense, as you can see in the show. Like, hat and a hoodie is what I go to. But, like, the nicest jerseys across any sport are the simple ones that are just, oh, hello, that just let you kind of, that you just kind of, let the colors do the talking. Canada is a beautiful colors. Red and white with a couple stripes and a beautiful classic leaf.
Starting point is 00:47:50 Not that hard. Not that hard. If they don't bring gold, is that the start of what went wrong? It looked like the guy who did monster energy cans Got the job to design them. That jersey has white numbers on it. Which one? The red and the black one have white numbers on it.
Starting point is 00:48:07 Is that right? Yes. There's no white anywhere else really. Correct. Just make the, like, ugh. Okay. It makes me so mad. Why even go?
Starting point is 00:48:16 Just ask somebody. Why even go? Sammy. They're so bad. We're not going to the ball. Just let somebody else make a decision. Like just take it to a normal person. They are so bad.
Starting point is 00:48:27 They're so bad. Sydney Crosby has to put on that jersey. I was like, oh, poor guy. I wonder if they like wear the white one, have some success, and just stay in the white one. I really hope that happens. And it will look better with gold around the neck. Our thanks to Rob Brown from Ched covering the Edminton Oilers. Four games on tap, including those Oilers against Columbus, where many people fail, like, must win.
Starting point is 00:48:51 after being humiliated on the weekend. I'm off to the Hockey All of Fame. Are you guys coming? Very cool. No. Big Zags has got big game for you. You got to sort out a sock drawer. I've got to water my plants.
Starting point is 00:49:06 Sammy's got to water his plants. All right. That's it for us. Once again, we've solved nothing in two hours. But we'll be back tomorrow to give it another crack at it. on the real, Kipper, and Borgesh. Steve Vallekette.
