Starting point is 00:00:00 Today, police arrest a suspect in the Charlie Kirk killing. Brazil's Bolsonaro is sentenced to 27 years in a landmark coup plot conviction. Poland says an incursion into their airspace by Russian drones was no mistake. That's after President Trump says it might have been. Belarus frees 52 political prisoners after an appeal from Trump. And, watch the cost of that coffee. US consumer prices look set to key. climbing. It's Friday, September 12th. This is Reuters World News, bringing you everything you need to know from the front lines in 10 minutes, seven days a week. I'm Carmel Crimmons in Dublin.
Starting point is 00:00:53 Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. We got him. Utah Governor Spencer Cox announcing the arrest of a young Utah man suspected of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk. On the evening of September 11th, a family member of Tyler Robinson reached out to a family friend. who contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Office with information that Robinson had confessed to them or implied that he had committed the incident. Cox says a family member interviewed by investigators claimed Robinson had become more political recently
Starting point is 00:01:25 and spoke in a disparaging manner about Kirk. The family member also stated Kirk was full of hate and spreading hate. Kirk, a close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, was killed by a single bullet as he spoke on stage at a Utah Valley University event. Governor Cox also highlighted apparent anti-fascist engravings that were found on unfired bullet casings. Hey, fascist, exclamation point, catch exclamation point.
Starting point is 00:01:53 Reporter Andrew Hay is on the ground in Arum, Utah, and says the community there has been left in shock. The people here are just sort of confused by why it happened here because Utah is not known as a place where there is a great deal of political polarization. The young people in general here really resonate with Charlie Kirk. They like his videos. They like that he was a person of faith. People here are routinely, uniformly, almost religious.
Starting point is 00:02:29 I was speaking with a couple of 16-year-old high schoolers who were praising Kirk. but at the same time, they want their community to come together. Former Brazilian president Jaya Bolsonaro has been convicted by a Supreme Court of plotting a coup to remain in power after losing the 2022 election and handed a sentence of 27 years. He's now the first ex-president in Brazil to be found guilty of attacking democracy. The verdict isn't unanimous. One judge had voted to acquit him.
Starting point is 00:03:03 Luciana Magales is covering the case in Brasilia. Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest, and the sentence doesn't start immediately, because once the trial ends, his lawyers are going to have the chance to file motions for clarification, and this might take some time. I thought he was a good president of Brazil, and it's very surprised. President Trump has voiced support for Bolsonaro. Earlier this year, imposing tariff hikes and sanctions on the presiding judge. Luciana has spoken with Bolsonaro's son, Eduardo, who now lives in the U.S.
Starting point is 00:03:48 He does expect some kind of reaction from President Trump. However, I mean, we can say whether it's going to be more tariffs or sanctions on the justices residing over the trial. So it remains to be seen. But what I can say is it wouldn't be a surprise if we were to see new sanctions after the trial.
Starting point is 00:04:16 Poland says an incursion into their airspace by Russian drones was no mistake. That's after President Trump says it could have been. Could have been a mistake. Could have been a mistake. But regardless, I'm not happy about anything having to do
Starting point is 00:04:29 with that whole situation. The United Nations Security Council, is set to meet later today after Poland shot down what it says were Russian drones that violated its airspace on Wednesday. Belarus has released 52 political prisoners after an appeal from President Trump. He had previously urged Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, to release detainees Trump has described as hostages. It's the biggest batch of prisoners pardoned by the authoritarian leader so far, and included over a dozen
Starting point is 00:05:03 foreign nationals. But it was far short of the 1,300 prisoners who's released Trump had called for. Mark Trevelyan has been following their release. President Donald Trump last month made a telephone call to Alexander Lukashenko, in which he asked him to free a large number of Belarusian political prisoners. And the day that he made his telephone call was the same day that he was heading to meet President Vladimir Putin of Russia in Alaska. And while he was on his way there, a Belarusian opposition activist called Dimitri Bolkounyets sent an email to Trump in which he asked him to intervene with Putin over the situation
Starting point is 00:05:52 of Belarusian political prisoners. And this activist, Bolkouinets, said to Trump in the email, if you can get these political prisoners out of Belarus, we will nominate you for for the Nobel Peace Prize, whether that was the deciding factor or not. Within hours of this email being sent, Trump was on the phone to Lukashenko. Lukashenko says he's released people
Starting point is 00:06:15 who have done their time for breaking the law and says there are no political prisoners in Belarus. The US says it will ease its sanctions on the Belarusian state airline and consider reopening its embassy in Minsk. And Mark says these are key developments for the Belarusian leader. So the Americans are offering Lukashenko a way to ease his international isolation and return to the fold.
Starting point is 00:06:45 US consumer prices have just seen their biggest jump in seven months, driven by higher food and housing costs. The Labor Department says inflation is up 2.9% over the past year. US economics editor Dan Burns says consumers can expect prices to continue to grind upwards. food costs, grocery store costs are starting to add up. And that can be from a variety of reasons, some of which are associated with higher costs of things like imported coffee. Coffee's up like almost 21% over the last year. Some of that's from problems and also some of that's from tariffs. Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on goods from Brazil, and we get almost a third of our coffee from Brazil. Beef prices were up, fresh fruit and vegetable prices were up, so people at the grocery
Starting point is 00:07:37 store are really beginning to notice a difference in the cost of feeding their families. And a recommended listen for your weekend, Christopher Waljasper goes on assignment to look at the healthcare scene in the US. There are hopes RFK Jr. will address chronic illness and the American diet and fears that he'll undermine vaccine uptake and development.
