Hi, I'm Tara Oaks in Liverpool.
It's Tuesday, September 22nd.
Today, Trump is in New York for the UN General Assembly
and will sign a landmark deal on Greenland,
while his approval rating hits its lowest point ever.
And the Trump administration prepares to sanction
the entire international criminal court.

We begin in New York, where U.S. President Donald Trump will address world leaders today at the United Nations General Assembly.
He's spending the next two days at the UN, with the growing crisis in the Middle East expected to dominate talks, as well as AI and the war in Ukraine.
And later this morning, the U.S., Denmark and Greenland will sign a landmark security agreement.
That's according to several sources.
Reuters is exclusively reporting that the deal includes plans to re-establish a Cold War-era military base in southern Greenland
and open a second base on the East Coast. That one's currently home to the Danish Dog Sled Patrol.
It follows months of pressure from Trump, who's been insisting that the US should control Greenland.
Denmark says the deal puts Arctic security under NATO's watch, rather than just leaving it to Washington and Copenhagen.
The White House declined to comment, instead repeating an earlier statement that the deal would defend the security of both Greenland and the US.
Trump is also scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodomizelensky, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, and Japanese Prime Minister Sanai Takaichi.
But not all of Trump's meetings are focusing on foreign policy.
Late Monday, he visited New York City Mayor Zora Mamdani at Gracie Mansion.
And as Trump takes the stage at the UN, some of the cameras covering him have gone dark.
Major TV networks suspended their shared presidential pool coverage after CNN, MS Now and Politico
sued the administration over being banned at the White House.
CNN had been scheduled to cover Trump's trip to New York but couldn't provide a feed.
The White House, meanwhile, has launched its own stream called Trump TV.
And it's not just world leader.
as watching what's happening at the UN this week.
Markets are two.
Here's Mike Dolan from our sister podcast morning bid
on what they're looking for.
Well, it's a really busy week on the political stage,
all in New York around the UN meeting.
We have the set piece with President Trump and Xi Jinping
on Thursday being the showstopper,
but we have also a number of potential meetings,
not least something that Trump held out overnight,
which is a meeting with the Iranian President,
and Peseshkian. Now, he said he was open to that meeting. It doesn't seem to be scheduled,
but you can see with the whole Middle East conflict and oil where it is and triple digits,
that any sense that there was some detente in that conflict would potentially be a market
movers. So watching that very closely. But more generally, the focus is on AI and tech,
and we saw the NASDAQ at record highs and chipstock soaring partly on Metta's release of its new
muse AI assistant. For the full picture, be sure to catch morning bed,
wherever you get your podcasts.
While international diplomacy plays out at the UN on the domestic front,
President Trump's approval rating has dropped to 32%.
That's the lowest point of his political career,
according to a new Reuters-Ipsos poll.
The survey points to growing frustration over two issues,
the cost of living and the war with Iran.
And some of that frustration is showing up inside Trump's own party.
support among Republicans fell from 82% to 73% in just one week.
The poll also finds Democrats opening their biggest leader of a year ahead of November's mid-term elections.
Meanwhile, in Washington, the Trump administration is preparing sanctions against the entire
International Criminal Court.
That's according to two sources.
Washington has already sanctioned a number of ICC judges and prosecutors.
And this move would be a sharp escalation in the US government's attack on the court, which prosecutes the world's worst crimes.
Amsterdam bureau chief, Anthony Deutsch, has more.
Trump has open disdain for international organizations and international justice, and there's been a creeping campaign against the court for the past year, or rather since the Trump administration came to power.
the escalation really came to ahead in July when Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that he was going to launch a campaign aimed at taking down the court brick by brick is the way he worded it.
The ICC, which has about 900 employees from 100 countries, was created in 2002 to prosecute individuals accused some of the worst crimes known to humanity.
So you're talking about war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
So it's a, you know, it's an extreme policy measure which could undermine the day-to-day functioning of the court.
So in practical terms, what will happen?
The court could be barred from using the dollar-denominated international banking system.
So they're going to have trouble doing simple things like paying some of their staff unless they can find,
or use alternative banks to do so.
And other simple examples would be U.S. companies that are supplying services to the court.
So think of basic things day-to-day like email, ICloud services.
They could no longer be able to use U.S. companies that are supplying those services because
they could be afraid of also being targeted by U.S. sanctions.

Turkish authorities are increasingly targeting LGBTQ plus groups.
Lawyers say dozens of people have now been arrested pending trial.
More than a hundred others were detained during protests in Ankara and Istanbul.
The latest arrests include five transgender women in Ankara.
The arrests follow coordinated raids across several provinces.
Turkish authorities say the operation, called My Family is Safe,
is meant to protect children and family values.
But rights groups and opposition politicians say they're concerned.
about growing restrictions on civil society in Turkey.
Tuvangamruc in Ankara has more.
There has been public backlash against it,
mostly from members of the LGBTQ community
and members of these organizations and associations
that have been targeted.
So they have gone out to demonstrate and protest.
And we have seen an outpour of support on social media as well.
But it hasn't been shown on mainstream media.
And obviously in Turkey,
a large portion of the media is pro-government or lenient towards the government. So that makes it
very difficult for certain outlets to publish certain things. And because of this, it becomes difficult
for the public to really have a 100% objective idea of what's happening. But those who have been
following the issue have voice support. Obviously, there is also a segment of the population that
supports these arrests and these operations. Now, keep in mind that this isn't just a one-off operation
or a one-off week of operations.
This is the result of years of preparation
by the government in terms of rhetoric and approach and policy
that has been anti-LGBQ
and to the point of suppressing some of their rights
and making sure that they're silenced and muzzled as much as possible.
So I don't believe that this is the first time we're going to be seeing this
or the last time that we're going to be seeing this.
Princess Diana's brother, Charles Spencer,
is stirring up controversy with his new memoir.
In the book, Swan Song My Sister,
he claims King Charles was, quote,
giddily elated after Diana's death in a car accident in 1997.
His version of events has been rejected by Buckingham Palace
in unusually strong terms,
saying in a statement that, quote,
fraternal grief can cloud reason,
affect judgment and colour memory.
The book goes on sale.
today.
And finally today, it's back and it's chunkier than ever.
Fat Bear Week has begun.
Every year, brown bears in Alaska's Katmine National Park unknowingly compete to pack on the
bounds they need for their winter hibernation.
The official website asks voters to pick the animal they believe, quote,
best exemplifies fatness and success in brown bears.
Fat Bear Week has grown massively since starting a
as a single-day promotion in 2014.
Last year's winner, 32 Chunk, weighed over £1,200 and received almost 100,000 votes.

Before we go, a correction to yesterday's Reuters World News update.
In our story about the White House press ban, we incorrectly named MSNBC as one of the outlets banned from the White House.
The correct name is MS now.
