Episode Date: January 30, 2026Joe Hunter & Ozzy Lusth Survivor 50 Preseason Interviews Mike Bloom (@AMikeBloomType) is here to chat to the cast of Survivor 50! Join us to hear from your favorite returning Survivor players! Sur...vivor 50’s preseason buzz gets even hotter as Mike Bloom returns for the Survivor 50 Preseason Interview series, welcoming fan favorites Joe Hunter and Ozzy Lusth. It’s “boys night” as Mike sits down for deeply personal, strategic conversations with two stars from different eras, Joe representing the new school and Ozzy stepping back into the game after nearly a decade away. The episode zeroes in on what it takes to evolve as a player and to face the jury with renewed purpose after a crushing loss. Mike Bloom kicks things off by recapping Joe’s journey through Survivor 48, where he was viewed as the season’s front runner only to be blindsided at the final vote. Joe reflects on balancing gratitude for playing with the pain of not winning, sharing how reliving his loss just weeks before heading back out for Survivor 50 has shaped his approach. The conversation shifts to strategy as Joe lays out his plan to “read the room” and build trust with the right people, rather than leading with loyalty alone. Ozzy’s segment dives into changes both on and off the island, he’s retired the “Jungle Boy” persona for a more mature game as “Oscar,” eager to build deep alliances and showcase personal growth. – Joe’s candid talk about learning from defeat and going beyond simply “playing the same game” – Ozzy’s take on why challenge dominance alone can’t win Survivor 50—and how building trust is the new meta – The “Friend or Foe” game reveals who they see as allies, threats, and wildcards—plus, how old school vs. new era vibes may split the tribe – Joe’s insight on how loyalty and trust are currency, but knowing when and with whom to spend it is everything – Ozzy shares how real-life challenges (opening a restaurant in Mexico, identity growth) prepare him for new Survivor obstacles As Joe and Ozzy gear up for another shot at the title, the big question looms: Will playing with heart and maturity finally land one of them the million-dollar prize, or is a new twist waiting at Tribal Council? Will alliances built on trust survive, or is a flip inevitable? Hi, everybody.
Mike Bloom here back with day three of our Survivor 50 pre-season interviews.
We're already halfway through the SELA tribe, four down in this eight-person group.
And today we are talking about two more.
It's Boys Night here on the podcast today.
you'll be hearing my interviews with Joe Hunter and Ozzy Luth.
You could maybe argue two sides of the same coin,
both fan favorites in their own right,
obviously one from the old school period of Survivor,
one in the new era.
Maybe the comparison, stop there.
We will find out in due time.
But first, if you have missed my interviews with Christian,
with Surrey, with Emily, with Jenna,
First off, go back, check them out.
They're absolutely fantastic.
But to make sure you don't miss out at any future interviews,

the tribe previews with Rob or any other miscellaneous things we've got going on
before the February 25th premiere,
as well as Rob has a website.com slash YouTube for the video versions of all of these interviews.
So let's get into it.
shall we? Let's talk about Joe Hunter. Hunter, I don't even know her, but we know a lot about Joe
because he was an incredibly prominent figure on Survivor 48. Of course, if you need a little bit of
a refresher on Joe, he is 46 years old from Vacaville, California. Currently lives in West
Sacramento, California. If you listen to my interview with Jenna, she flags that they are within
the vicinity of one another.
And he is, of course, a fire captain.
And we thought his chances of winning were on fire going into the last couple of weeks
of season 48, only for that to get properly doused.
Thanks to perhaps a couple of people that he is playing with once again here on Survivor 50.
And the interesting thing about the timing of this all was that the Survivor 48 finale
only aired a couple of weeks before the cast flew out 450.
So there's a lot swirling around Joe's head right now, right?
He is reliving this big loss all over again,
where you have all these people in Confessional,
talking about him being the frontrunner,
certainly the fans were talking about it at the time,
only for him to leave the season with one jury vote to his name.
It's having a tough time kind of pinning down
what he needs to improve upon for his second go-round,
or if he should, keep on, keep it on.
Now that the kindling is said,
it's time that we light my interview properly ablaze. Here's my preseason conversation with
Joe. Let's get into this, Joe, because I mean, to say the past month has probably been a
whirlwind for you would be an understatement, right? Because I imagine you're kind of existing in
three different time periods over the past few months where you are reliving 48. You are
simultaneously sort of like dealing with the present of kind of reliving through 48. Correct. And then
you're also, and we'll talk about when this happened in the process, getting involved for 50.
Yeah.
So what has 2025 been for you at this point living in those three separate worlds?
I mean, it's unreal, right?
Because you're dealing with the just profound gratitude being a part of 48, being a part of the
survivor family and everything that comes along with it.
And it's moving at lightning pace.
Yeah.
And then you get to the finale, but then you basically watch it live.
I mean, people don't understand.
For me, it's fresh.
I'm seeing things I've never seen before.
Exactly.
Conversations.
And so that real time, like you said, then you're, wait a minute, what?
So you would think, watch the finale.
I know what happens, no big deal.
But it's almost like, wow, I need some time because I didn't really know what happened.
Yeah.
And then all of a sudden it's like we're leaving for 50, which is like this amazing,
nervous, excited energy that you're trying to funnel.
Yeah.
It's wild.
So let's talk about sort of where.
you left things from 48
because again from our perspective
you know the narrative was that like you were somebody who
was playing this this dominant
game and then and we talked about this a little bit
obviously after the finale but obviously now we can speak
more openly now that there's no fear of retribution
but like you know that
you walked away I think ultimately
you know maybe getting a feeling
that that was not an attitude that the jury necessarily
wanted to at least
you know acknowledge or work with a reward
in a manner of speaking how does that
affect your headspace for this
I mean, it's brutal because you live in this state of confusion.
Yeah.
Because I go, okay, when I look at all of it going back, I go, well, when I look at these
confessions and I look at exit interviews, I get blamed for a lot of people leaving.
If you look at a lot of those interviews, they're like, why are you in Ponderosa?
Joe, Joe, Joe.
You look at the confessionals.
We got to get Joe out, head of the snake.
Joe, Joe, Joe.
And I'm like, okay, that's great.
and then you see the end result of one vote.
Yeah.
And then I look at it and I go, okay, I don't feel that I bombed the final
tribal.
I mean, obviously you can do things better.
I don't think it was a complete failure.
She go, what, what happened?
I think that's going to be a question that's going to take you a long time to figure out.
So it leaves you in the state of now what?
Yeah.
Because on one hand, you got to the end.
You can't deny that, but you didn't win.
So it's like, what do you, it's truly a challenging,
challenging spot. But a blessing.
No. But it's really difficult because you go, you didn't get a print out of your mistakes.
Yeah.
Like, hey, here's the exact list. Do these differently. Yeah. Okay. I can tell you what I think.
Yeah. What do you think? Okay. So first and foremost, I think in any result that you didn't win,
I look at it like, I made it to the Super Bowl, but I just didn't win the game. Right.
So you don't want to change everything. But it starts with accountability. So I want to be the one that
goes instead of blaming everybody else, Jeff, or the Iowa.
or all these things go, you know, hey, I obviously did or didn't do something the jury wanted
or didn't want. I did that. Right. So I just got to own that that's on me. Yeah. And I think
how I fixed that moving forward. Yes. Is if I'm fortunate enough to be in a position to be
in front of the jury again, oh my God, epic, would be instead of focusing on what they're asking,
the what, focus on the why. Why are they asking?
this question. Yeah. So then I can give them what they want. Yeah. Now, what's so interesting is
when we talked, you know, I'd ask you this honor, the loyalty and bringing a group to the end,
you know, is this an attitude that you feel as a winning strategy and survivor? And what you told me
was like, on the one hand, I want to play in a way that made my family proud and you were
successful in doing so. But you told me, if I get the chance to go out on the beach and there's
a different vibe going on, I'm going to change it up. We are back on the beach. And I would
imagine there's a bit of a different vibe. So what is your headspace going into this?
So here's what I really mean is like I can only be me. I can only play the way that is
comfortable for me. And to be honest with you, it was genuine last time when I played on 48.
And this honor and this trust game is really me. And I think the only thing I need to do now is
I got to read the room in terms of you don't have to throw that in someone's face.
Like this is what I'm going to do. Right. You can still play that trust game.
I just got to make sure I pick the right people to play it with.
Right?
So that's the, instead of now saying,
we're going to do this, let's all, you know, get this group.
I'm now just going to say, okay, I think at the end of the day,
I have hard currency, have cash in my hand, in trust.
At some point, everybody wants it.
Everyone loves that.
Yeah.
That's what I'm going to be selling.
It's like, hey, that works for the Genevieve's out there
and the Emmys that are great strategic players.
And it works definitely with Coach and Kobe and,
Stephanie from the old school, it's like, I feel it's hard to turn down trust.
Yeah.
That's going to be my game.
Yeah, so talk to me about this perception because on the one hand, you're coming in again
as someone that, like, people probably imagine, like, one of the big threats to win from
the season that just aired a couple weeks before coming out.
On the other hand, as you're saying, the thing you could arguably pitch is like, did you see
my game?
I had a group that I locked in with and I took it to the end.
Is that something that you want to necessarily work with?
So it's a perception that works for and against you, you know?
I know, and it, again, great.
questions as usual my man i think that you know here's how i'm looking at it though
kyle and camilla i feel are the bigger target out of the three of us because i go yeah
joe might be a physical threat they might say that but then check this out ozzie has won five
colby has won five now are you happy you didn't win five now so you're not trying with them i know
Exactly.
You know, Colby's won five.
Jonathan, smallest guy on the island.
He, you know, he is obviously a physical threat.
So I think that although it might have been perceived by some Joe was a big threat in this game,
at the end of the day, I didn't win.
And I think this group really focuses on that.
There's a lot of people like Kyle won.
And I feel that even though I might be a threat,
I feel that at the base of every, you know, team,
even if it's like, hey, I want to build this on deceit and lies.
They always have to look at Kyle and Camilla.
Yeah.
They trusted each other unequivocally.
So I think that to me, I think it's going to work.
It's just being me.
Well, let's get into some of these people.
Okay.
I got a game for you this time.
Oh, man.
It's called friend or foe.
Oh.
We're going to, that's the reaction I wanted, Joe.
So we're going to run through the cast.
And you're going to tell me for each person either.
if they're a friend, someone that you would want to work with,
or a foe, either someone you're not vibing with
or someone that you want to take out as a threat.
You can provide explanation if you want to.
We'll obviously get into these pre-existing relationships.
So let's start from the top here.
Jenna.
Friend.
Give me some reasons why.
So, you know, I think that when you look back at her game,
I believe when she played, so I don't know.
I think it was Chrissy that won four immunity challenges.
And did Jenna win her season?
She didn't win, no, she didn't win.
You're right.
But when I think of Jenna, I think of an old school player that has played in the longer season,
that has played and made alliances with people like in this community,
Colby, coach, Chrissy, Stephanie.
So, friend, because she has an old school mindset.
I think she's going to want to vibe with trust.
Friend.
So on that note, Colby, Stephanie, both friends to you?
Friend.
There we go.
How about Surrey?
100% friend.
Because that's Mama Bear.
And what I mean by that is this will be her fifth time playing.
How do you not, you have to friend that.
It's almost like you have something, whatever it is, you can't deny five times.
Yeah.
You can't.
She's that constant in the survivor equation.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I think that she has a mist about her that you just want to bring in regardless on like,
she has influence.
And she played with all of those players at different times.
Yeah.
She has a connection.
Easier than I do.
So it's like you need to use that.
So I feel that friend for sure.
How about Ozzy?
Friend.
Mm.
Just similar.
types of old school vibes.
Old school vibe.
Five immunity wins.
Seems like a chill dude.
Yeah.
And he's a vet.
This is going to be his fifth time.
Fourth time.
Fourth or fifth time.
That's amazing.
Yeah.
How about coach?
100% friend.
Because I think there's been a lot of talk, obviously, about like, you are all about honor,
loyalty to a group.
Coach obviously profess that a lot as well.
I mean, it would be magical if we could both come together with that.
Because look, right wrong or indifferent.
Mine isn't some.
going to be some big flip if everyone's waiting for me to like it's just not going to happen yeah
you're waiting for your heel turn yeah it's not going to happen but i think that coach i think we'll
stick to it too so i mean i who knows that's why it's so great but um i'll die on that hill so coach friend
how about a obrie ooh she might look at me as a foe i'm afraid of but she's my friend okay again
four-time player really great strategist and a vet which she's
means she knows how to navigate all of this drama.
Four season means you've dealt with the jocks, the quiet people, the aggressive people,
the drama.
So like, that is somebody that like, if you're not careful, takes the win.
How about Chrissy?
You mentioned her before.
Yep, friend.
Because again, old school won several challenges, understands the game.
And I think it's kind of desperate for maybe we'll be unsettled a little bit in this new 26 days,
young kids, I feel that that might be intimidating.
Here's somebody that I can trust that can help bridge that gap.
Let's go to the David versus Goliath people, Angelina.
Oh, man.
Tough.
You know, it's tough because you don't,
you haven't played with these people, but I'll say friend.
Okay.
Friend, because, honestly, when I look at that,
she's connected to a lot of people.
Mike White, Christian.
Like, she has this connection where I go,
do not underestimate that,
and she was really good with people.
She was really good with people.
Friend.
How about Christian?
Oh, man.
Brilliant, dude.
Seems like a brilliant human being.
I'm saying, friend.
You never want to mess with a guy that wears a sports coat on a regular basis.
Never.
To be fair, that's probably the closest Christian has come to sports.
Yeah.
Fair.
Fair.
I'm saying 100% friend.
How about Mike White?
Friend.
Influence.
He has an error about him that, like, I think with his success and,
life, he's obviously had to deal with a lot of BS. He's obviously had to deal with making
friends. He's obviously had to play a game socially in real life. Yeah. In his career, I mean,
he's extremely successful. I think he wouldn't be right. Nacho Libre. He wrote School of Rock. I mean,
he is obviously White Lotus. Like, wow, man, wow. So I would say friend for that guy. He's like
the godfather, friend. How about Rick Devons? Oh, man. He's like the, hey, he's got a lot, you know,
He's charismatic.
He knows how to fire him off.
He was on the podcast,
so I got to listen to all him,
his analytics behind the game,
which is a big tell that I'm like,
you need a guy like that on your team.
Because his intellectual side of the game
was very impressive,
how he was able to break down every player.
And if you have that kind of intellect,
you could be a huge threat,
so I want to make my threats, my friend.
So that's a friend.
All right, let's get into your beloved new era.
Let's talk about Jonathan.
Jonathan.
Friend.
Friend.
I mean, like I said,
him being the smallest guy in the cast,
I got to make sure that he's not afraid or been taking advantage of.
So, you know, in all honesty, he seems like a really good dude.
He seems like he does great things outside of the game.
He seems like a humanitarian and a really good dude.
And I got to join up with him.
You want him to call you Mr. Joe?
Yeah, no, no, no, no.
How about D?
Oh, man, D is side note.
Probably the biggest threat out here.
Because I think that she has the most strategic part of her game out there.
She is a physical threat.
She's mentally tough.
And she knows how to bring a group to the end.
And has this, I can tell, has a social game already.
Like, she's going to be heck to reckon with it.
So I'm definitely.
And in her season, when somebody said her name, it was like, bangs came out.
I do not want any part of that.
I'm going friend.
How about Emily?
Emily, too.
Like, Emily is one of those ones when I wash.
Like, if you look at her transition in her season.
Yeah.
Started off, as some would say, kind of.
was struggling to find her footing in the game.
Yeah.
Caleb was a huge help in that.
And then I really grew to appreciate that struggle for her and then her change.
And man, like, I think that's really valuable.
She's seen both ways to play a game.
Friend.
All right.
Let's get to 46.
Uh-huh.
Charlie.
Charlie is super impressive to me.
Charlie, again, and there's only really two foes.
But out of the friends, Charlie is because, again, I got to hear him on the fire, the,
the podcast.
Yeah.
And hearing his,
when you hear someone
narrate an entire season,
each player,
it's like a cheat sheet.
I mean,
I get into their brain.
And once I saw how he played
and how far he went
and what happened at his tribal council
and all of that mixed in,
I'm like,
that's a dude you need as a friend.
Right?
An attorney, he's young,
he's in his late 20s.
He might be the youngest one with Dee.
They might be the two youngest.
I think they're both in their late 20s,
which just means that's dangerous
because they're,
pepper, they, you know, they know how to attack and they might come after the old ones,
friend.
Give me your thoughts on Q.
Oh, man.
You know, Q's a tough read because you don't play with them.
A lot of quiet, you know, seems like a really good dude.
And then you look at the season.
You go, wow, like, it was up and down.
Yeah.
I mean, let's be honest.
It was up and down.
Seems like a great dude.
But it's like, what's the read?
You're kind of left like, okay, well, what?
What am I going to get?
Yeah.
So, but he influenced a lot of people to end up on the jury.
He had a big part in a lot of people's exit.
So I'm saying, friend.
Tiffany.
Oh, Tiffany's a beast.
Like, and when you saw her on the jury, she looks furious.
I do not want any part of that.
Like, I don't want any part of her friend.
I like how somebody of these friends are almost like preventative measures.
It's like, I don't want to step on that snake.
It's like, if I'm not with you, I'm against you.
Like, I'm with you.
I'm with you.
I'm with you.
Don't worry.
I'm with you.
Don't worry.
100% friend for her for sure.
You mentioned her before, Genevieve.
Yes.
Love to friend because when you really watch her overall mind in this game, it was impressive.
I mean, I think, and here's the thing about Genevue, why I say friend, is I feel that one of her things that she said later that she regrets is not building some of those alliances.
At first I would say foe, because she didn't want a lot.
exactly what I want. She doesn't want the closeness. She doesn't want those tight bonds so she can cut.
I feel like some of her reflection after was like maybe she should have had more of those bonds.
So that's why I'm going to say friend, because I actually want that to happen in the game too.
All right. Let's get into the 48 of it all.
How are you feeling about Camilla right now?
Oh, my gosh. It's like they, Camilla walked up to me and pantsed me on national television and then Kyle pushed me over.
Like that's how I thought. They both did me.
Like, you ready for another nerd?
Yeah.
And they gave me a Melvin, like a big wedgey.
It's like, I think that, listen, it's hard because, I mean, let's be honest.
Like, I was on her name, like, my name was on her mouth for the entire season.
She was like, Joe, Joe, Joe.
Get him out.
Get him out.
Get him out.
So it's hard to say friend because look at what she wanted me out, even though it was just gameplay.
Yeah.
So then I'll say, based on that, based on the fact she would have absolutely got me out a hundred times.
I have to assume she's going to think the same thing.
And Kyle was really the one that was driving, keeping me in.
Right.
It would be difficult, but I got to say foe.
And it's hard because she's from my season.
But if you look back at it, I'm like, wow, you would have absolutely cut me many, many.
And even use the words, he's the enemy.
Yeah.
So I gotta go foe.
Yeah.
Talk to me about the Kyle side of things
because you two had an incredibly close relationship.
Right.
You know, he was also part of this pantsing duo.
I know.
How are you feeling right now?
I couldn't be more conflicted, is the honest truth,
because I think people want this hard.
I want revenge.
Well, listen, in this game with these pros playing,
you can't come in and close any door.
I admit that you can't walk in and say,
I want this person out.
It's just too much.
But this is the tricky part, my man,
is he shared with me.
intimate, real things
that bond of us.
But then,
wrapped around lies in deceit in the game.
It's like an ex-girlfriend
that broke your heart and cheated on you,
but it's really hot.
Right?
You're like, wait a minute.
Like, this is so great,
but you cheated on me.
I don't know what to do.
And Kyle also got me to the end,
but was it strategic?
Yeah.
Was it just because Camilla couldn't go?
Like, would it have been me
if it was somebody else?
Like, would he have brought me?
And that's hard to say
because I believe it was genuine,
but you can't now not what if,
what if, what if.
Yeah.
I got to say friend for Kyle just for the fact that he brought me to the end.
Like, I can't, like, that's a tough one.
And I know that probably sounds harsh to people.
Like, oh, he's on your season.
But you got to remember, like.
Arguably you know these people best.
That's right.
Watching it from the edit side, it's difficult to say friend.
But I would say friend.
Any thoughts on the 49ers?
Oh, yeah.
I'm going to say this right now, just off swag alone.
Please.
this is a guess but I'll tell you why
one of them won
okay period or
and the other one was two or three
I think she won
Savannah I think she won
she has like winter calves she has this
and here's what I'm saying winter calves
yeah yeah she has this presence about it
I'm like that's an athlete she looks like she's cruising
around and it's because she
is so confident it seems like
the way she cruises around this is just
an observation uh huh I go
amongst these players
I mean, this guy played five-time, this woman played five-time, this person has five immunity, this, Jonathan, and they just cruise in as like the fresh meat, the newest with nothing, I'm missing something.
And why would they bring you back this soon?
That's a huge sacrifice.
And then I think about what life can sustain that, right?
If you have kids or if you don't, if you have a significant other, to turn right back around in basically two weeks means you are committed to this.
game. You are all in. To turn around that quick would be hard for anybody, mentally, emotionally,
physically. And why are you here? No one's seen you play yet, which means you dominated.
Because there's no, like, review, there's no interviews. It's like, so the only people that know
are the people that are important. And you did something enough to turn their head to say,
we want you right back amongst the greatest. So I would honestly say out of those two,
believe it or not, would be foe out of those two both. Only because I don't know.
No. Right. And they can play any narrative they want. What if they got second and first and they were the best duo of the teams ever? What if she won five immunities? And he won four. I mean, literally the sky is the limit. Yeah. And here they are in our season. Dangerous. Well, let's go from unknown quantities to more known quantities. Who is one player you wish was cast on Survivor 50?
That's a great question. Other than Eva, I'll say Boston Rob. And I know people are like, he's played a lot.
And I get why not.
Like he has pretty much done everything you can on the season.
But it just, when you think of Survivor, I feel there's certain names that come up.
He's one of them.
We ride on that coattail a lot.
And it's just out of honor of him.
Like, it would just be cool to have him out here, whether he wanted to or not.
It would just be cool to have that dude out here.
Well, you know how we typically end these things.
And the first time we did the celebrity loved one, you said, George Clooney.
I'm giving you another bite of the apple here.
Do you want to mention somebody else?
You want to double down on Clune?
Okay, like, and that's who I want to see on it or what was it?
As a loved one.
So it's a celebrity or a fictional character.
Okay, that I would have come back to see me.
Yep, that'd be like a little, I would say a little taste of home, but no, it's just, it's just, you know, the exact opposite.
Okay, Tyler Perry.
Oh, okay.
I mean, a vowed survivor fan.
Yep.
Great human being, nothing but positive things to say about that man.
And that would be awesome.
And I think everyone would be like, whoa!
Yeah.
And he's so talented, like, I think it would shock everybody here.
Last thing I want to ask is that, again, you were so open.
about Joanna's story last time
and how you came out here to help sort of finish her dream.
Yeah.
Who are you playing for this time?
You know, it's it's twofold.
And I didn't get to put to rest that dream
because I did promise her a win.
And so I need to make right on that promise.
And I never mentioned that because I just thought
I was going to have to put that to bed.
I obviously play once.
I gave it my honest and that was a piece I made with her,
but I got another shot and I can make it right.
And I can bring home a win for her.
And then the last piece of that is truly my kids on this level and my wife is that I go,
hey, I'm scared.
I'm nervous.
This is a dream come true.
And I want to show them that you have to take a chance.
Step in front of your dream.
Don't be afraid.
Like, dad's nervous.
Dad did this.
You can always look back no matter what happens, I didn't run from this opportunity.
I wasn't afraid of it.
And I want them to always go, Dad, I'm afraid to try out for this team.
Dad, I'm afraid to go to college.
afraid, I'm afraid. I can say, remember when I chased my dream? No matter what happened, I chased it.
Yeah. This is a dream. So I'm harder to show my family, you got to keep leaning into it, chase your dreams.
Let's see if you got those winter's calves. That's right. Beautiful sentiments, as always, from
Joe Hunter to close out, yet another preseason interview with him. Guy who always has a family
on the mind, both on and off island. And very profound words about how his journey with Joanna will
continue on Survivor 50. We're going to continue with my interview with Ozzy right after this.

After almost a decade away from the island,
one of, it seems, his most natural habitats.
Ozzy is back for a fifth time.
By the end of this, 10% of all survivor seasons in the U.S.
will feature Ozzy in some way, shape, or form.
Of course, there's a reason for that.
This is a guy who won fan favorite twice.
This is somebody who, in Spicerone.
hired kids to climb coconut trees and go fishing.
This is the guy who nearly won the million dollars by one jury vote in his very first season.
And then two seasons later was one immunity challenge win away from winning the million then as well.
But this time, Ozzy truly feels like the third time or I guess the fifth time here is the charm.
That's because Ozzy has undergone the biggest growth, I would say.
in between Survivor seasons.
His hair is growing a bit different as well.
And perhaps that represents the new version of Ozzy
that we are getting in Survivor 50.
Here's what to know about him
before we get into my interview.
Maybe representing a bit of those life changes.
Ozzy is 43 years old,
originally from Guano Alto City in Mexico,
where he currently resides as well.
One of the big things he talks about in my interview
is the fact that in the intermediate time between seasons,
he has gone back to his home country
to create this hybrid music venue, vinyl bar, and restaurant.
But much like the vinyl, despite the vintage feel
that people might get around Ozzy,
he really is putting forward this attitude
that he is a different person,
not only with a lot of the things he's undergone in his life
and subsequent maturation,
but the fact that he is trying to,
trying to approach the game this time with a more well-rounded perspective.
So, without further ado, here's my interview with Ozzy.
Ozzy, Jungle Boys back in the jungle for a fifth time.
Jungle Man.
There we go.
Finally, finally, matured.
How are you doing right now?
Yeah, finally, I know.
It's like, it's, I only, I feel like I am almost grown up.
Almost, not quite there yet.
Well, let's talk about what has happened since, I mean, it has been, what, almost a decade since game changers, but a lot has happened for you.
You know, you found, you know, new parts of your identity, your sexuality, changed career.
So talk a bit about what's been going on in the world of Ozzy since we last saw you.
Yeah, you know, I look, I'm one of those people that can't be told what to do.
Even when people give me great advice, I'm like, I am going to go fuck up anyways.
Sorry, I swearing not.
No, you're good.
Okay.
You know, so I've made a lot of mistakes.
I've done a lot of things that, you know, maybe I'm not as proud of as I thought I would be.
But, you know, at the end of it, I've come out a stronger person.
And about a year and a half ago, I moved down to Mexico.
Wow.
Opened a restaurant with my little brother.
Wow.
The town that I was born in called Juana Guato.
Yeah, I opened a vinyl bar.
It's basically once I finish completing, I have one more phase of construction, but it's a vinyl bar music venue restaurant.
Nice.
Yeah, yeah.
So then when you get the call to come back out for another job, as it were, what was your reaction?
Considering, as you mentioned, all the stuff that you've been doing since your time away, do you feel like you're coming in with a new headspace for time number five?
Yeah, I feel like I'm a completely different person.
and actively been, you know, trying to mature myself
and be a better person than I have been in the past.
You know, had some long, hard looks in the mirror and reflection.
And I think that, you know, coming back to play again
is an opportunity to really showcase the parts of me that have changed.
Yeah.
And the interest that I have for my fellow cast
is much stronger than it's ever been.
In the past playing Survivor, I just kind of relied on my abilities of fish or be good at challenges to keep me in the game.
And it's just a failing strategy.
It doesn't, you know, it almost worked for me a few times, but that's not going to work in Survivor 50.
Survivor 50 is full of very strategic, very smart players that are ready to, you know, they're out for blood.
Yeah.
So the only way to win this game is by developing really deep relationships and strong alliances
built on trust, you know.
So the paradox of survivors, you can't trust everybody, but you've got to trust some people
completely.
Yeah.
And we saw that just recently with Joe and Eva and Kyle and Camilla in their season.
You know, they both had alliances that were 100% trust.
Right.
And, you know, Kyle did play a better game because he was able to show and potentially was a better smooth talker than, you know.
But I think in this new era, juries are not going to award the winnings to or the title of Soul Survivor to somebody who was a challenge beast and that's it.
You know, you can't get to the end just by winning challenges and think that you're going to get a million dollars anymore.
Yeah.
I think the same thing happened in game changers, honestly.
Brad Cole Pepper, you know, he went on immunity run.
He tied your record.
You know, he got to the very end, but he was such a jerk to almost everybody that nobody wanted to give him money.
People would rather give the money to this police officer Trump supporter, you know,
which was also, you know, kind of crazy.
So it just goes to show you that you can't just rely on one thing to win the million dollars.
You've got to be a great all-around player.
You got to be able to do it all.
You got to be good of challenges.
You got to be good with people.
Yeah.
If you're not doing the, if you can only do one of those two things,
sorry, but you're just not going to win this game.
So let's talk about from the perspective of your perception, though,
because I think coming in to your point,
your survivor career is largely known for the guy that's climbing trees,
going out fishing, winning challenges.
Is that something that you're trying to steer into
and maybe hide some of those newer aspects you're bringing in?
Or are you coming in being like, to everybody openly?
this is who I am now.
No, I don't think it's worth
sort of standing
on my soapbox and saying, hey guys,
I've changed.
I want to know you.
I want to look into your eyes and see
the deepest, darkest secrets of what
makes you you.
I'm going to do that sort of as
just as my
process of getting to know somebody.
But I don't think saying,
hey, I've changed,
is going to have this type of
effect that I want it to.
But, you know, if it ends up being a situation where, you know, people are wondering whether
or not I have changed or what, you know, I'm open to the conversation.
I'm open to talking about all the difficulties that I've gone through and what the last,
especially with the last year and a half, the most recent, you know, time, year and a half of
my life is the hardest thing that I've ever done.
Wow.
And, you know, opening a restaurant in a new country, you know, I'm a, you know, I'm a,
was born there and I've been going there my whole life, but I didn't really speak that well as
Spanish. So moving to a new place and opening a restaurant, you know, and having to just like,
you know, immerse myself and be incredibly uncomfortable like every single day. I'm feeling
like an idiot because I can't, I can't speak and communicate in an eloquent manner. It's been
really hard, but it's also been a great sort of practice for this next experience of,
of Survivor 50.
Well, let's talk about the patrons at your outdoor restaurant right here right now.
Let's talk about your fellow castaways.
I've got a game for you.
Yeah.
So we're going to play a game called friend or foe.
I'm going to go through the cast one by one.
You're going to tell me if this person's a friend, someone you want to work with, or a foe,
either someone you're not getting good vibes from or someone you want to take out.
And we can, you know, get into some of some pre-existing relationships for sure.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
So let's start with Jenna.
Jenna, I want her to be a friend.
Yeah, I get good vibes.
Friend.
How about Colby?
Colby can be a friend, yeah.
Yeah.
How about Stephanie?
Stephanie will be a friend.
Yeah.
I think that all the old school players,
I think we're going to gravitate towards each other in the beginning.
Yeah.
There's a possibility there's going to be a new versus old split.
Hmm.
We'll see how that shakes out, but you've got the sort of 30s,
yeah, later mid to late 30s players that are not really new,
they're not really old, they're sort of in that middle zone.
I mean, they still play 39 days.
So I'm going to say Stephanie is going to be a friend in the beginning.
Well, let's talk about somebody who you have had some history with a couple seasons worth.
What are your thoughts on Surrey right now?
I hope she's going to be my best friend.
Best friend.
I hope.
That's what I'm hoping for.
That's a new echelon from the friend or foe, best friend.
I hope so.
Interesting. Is it just from the way you left Game Changers? Is it more so that like old school solidarity?
Part of it's old school solidarity and part of it is I just think that she, you know, if we can work together, she has all the skills that I don't have or that I'm not as good at.
And I have all the skills in other aspects that she doesn't necessarily have.
So I think I can make a lot of inroads with some of the bigger physical threats.
And I think that she can make a lot of inroads with, you know, some of the more strategic players.
And I think if we can work together, I think we can accomplish a lot.
I don't know if that's going to happen.
I don't know if there's going to be an opportunity for that,
but she's not the only one that I want to sort of make that type of a relationship with.
Well, let's talk about someone else who you do have a relationship with.
Friend or foe, coach.
Frenomie.
Mm, right there in the middle.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, listen, I'm intrigued because obviously we're, you know,
over a decade removed from South Pacific.
And obviously to say things in acrimoniously would probably,
probably be an understatement.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The problem with coach is he is a huge personality.
You know, the dragon slayer.
Does the dragon slayer forgive and forget or does the dragon slayer hold grudges yet to be
determined?
I think that he blames me maybe still to this day for, you know, losing the season that
we played together.
But I hope not.
I hope that we can make, you know, at least make, I don't think it's going to serve him or I
to remain enemies in this game.
I think that we need each other and we can potentially do a lot of great things if we can
see eye to eye and squash whatever beef we have.
I think that both of us are ready to evolve past what happened in the past and really take
this new season head on.
Give me your thoughts on your fellow game changer, Aubrey, friend or foe?
You know, I want her to be a friend, but she might be more of a foe.
I'm trying to remember if like the two of you were like on the same drive and game changers.
We never, no, we were never on the same tribe and game changers.
We finally, when the merge came, that's when we were back together and I never really,
I don't have any sort of relationship with her.
But she's a smart player.
She's a strategic player.
She's, you know, she has a lot to be scared of.
I respect her game.
I would love to work with her.
At this point, I'm just going to have to say foe
because, you know, without any other basis to go on, you know.
And then maybe if I'm smart, you know, I can massage that into a better place.
How about Chrissy?
Chrissy's, I get good vibes from her.
I really do.
And I hope she'll be a friend.
Let's move on to our David versus Glythe group.
What are your thoughts on Angelina?
She seems like an enemy.
I get good vibes from her, but she seems dangerous, man.
Didn't tell me more.
Oh, she just has this like, I think in her season, you know,
I recently watched her season preparing to come out here just in case.
And she just seems like she's really good at faking it.
And I don't know where the real Angelina, like how she actually,
it was really hard for me to tell how she actually thinks,
because she's super witty.
She's really quick,
and she seems like a great actress.
So I just don't, I don't trust her.
I'd love to work with her if I can,
but I know, like, deep down,
I don't think I can trust her.
How about Christian, friend or foe?
Christian seems like a friend.
He just seems like a really good guy,
and I think that if you're straight up with him,
I think he'll play straight up with you.
You know, he seemed to play a pretty loyal game,
It wasn't until Gabby kind of turned on him, that he turned on her first.
He's so smart that he would be a great asset, a great ally, and not somebody that you'd want to mess around with.
Because I think that he does have the capabilities of, you know, using that noggin of his to flip the script on you.
Mike White, friend or foe.
I hope a best friend.
Best friend? Okay, right up there with Surrey.
Yeah, I hope so.
You know, hopefully I can charm Mike White a little bit.
and I, you know, I, I, I'm such a huge fan of him.
Yeah.
From before Survivor even, you know, Nacho Libre was one of my favorite movies for so long.
And to be playing with the, you know, someone that you look up to that is just an intellectual, like, he's a giant.
Yeah.
And now he's obviously riding the mojo of White Lotus and he's just, like, he's as big as it gets right now.
He's as hot as it gets, and everyone's going to be vying for his attention.
Everyone's going to be trying to get him on their side.
I think he's going to be a great person to go really far with, and, you know, hopefully I can be that guy.
How about Rick Devons, friend or fell?
Oh, he's so annoying.
Sorry, Rick.
I just, I don't know what it is about you, but you're just such a goofball, in a good way.
But, like, I find him annoying just because he's, like, kind of a goofy character.
and I feel like he's going to have it out for me for some reason.
Hopefully not.
Hopefully we can become friends.
Like, I'm trying to be friends with everybody, honestly.
But I'm worried about him because he just seems like a loose wire.
But he'd be a great person, I think, to take to the end.
Interesting.
Because I don't necessarily see him as being the most physical player.
I think he's strategically savvy.
I think he's a smart guy, for sure.
And I liked the way he played on his season.
kind of got
the raw end of the stick
but I thought he was
he was funny and he was fun to watch
he's definitely a witty player
and you know I think that
he's really interesting so
hopefully I can
I'm trying to make everyone my friend
yeah but I mean we're going to segue into the new era here
you talked about that old school solidarity
let's see if we get some foes coming out here
let's start with Jonathan
super big friend
I mean literally he's super big
yeah I just
remember watching Jonathan's seasons and you know it might be one of those situations where you know you want to beat
you know you want to beat your idol so that you can like take the take the you know take the pedestal or take
the throne so it might be a situation like that but jonathan he seems like a big loyal teddy bear
he seems straight up honest he played a really loyal game i really respected the way he played he
played he was doing everything he could for his tribe like i see myself and jonathan i hope that we can
work together. I'm also going to be, you know, watching out for him trying to usurp the throne.
Right. Give me your thoughts on D. Oh, man. Talk about black widow.
Praying mantis. She's like a praying mantis. Whatever insect you want to assign.
Well, whatever insect, you know, kills their mate after the deed. I'm not saying that,
but I'm saying that she's beautiful. She's a millionaire. She's smart. She's,
She's funny. She's Latina. She's got all the, she's got all the right weaponry.
You know, she could, she could probably get me wrapped around her finger if she wanted to.
And so I'm going to say foe.
Give me your thoughts on Emily.
Emily, Emily, I can't really, Emily, look, I would love to be, she seems like she's going to be a foe.
Interesting.
But hopefully we can see eye to eye.
I just feel like she's the,
I feel like she's the right amount of nerdy
that I can connect with her on.
Like,
I've seen her reading some fantasy books
and about some fantasy authors
that I really like.
Brandon Sanderson.
Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, so I saw her reading that.
I was like, all right, okay,
maybe we got something that we can connect on.
But I think that she plays,
she's obviously incredibly intelligent.
Sometimes really intelligent people
that are like outwardly, just brazenly,
smart and I don't necessarily get along because I'm kind of this easy going sort of like stonerish
type of type of guy and sometimes those people they don't really like I don't know if they don't
respect my intellect because I speak in a slower sort of like I don't know broken up way but
I hope we can be friends but I think that she's going to be looking to take me out.
Charlie friend or foe Charlie Charlie's a hard one because
I feel like he's such a nice guy
and unless I can connect with him on the first day or so
and really make that, look, he was loyal to his alliance
with Ben and they like really got along super well
so I feel like there is an opening for me to make that
but if we don't get connected almost immediately
I think he's going to come gunning for me.
Yeah. Hugh, friend or foe?
Honestly, I think Hugh's going to be a foe.
Okay.
I think it's going to be a foe.
Look, there's always this like opportunity for strong players to stick together to like try to make it to the end together and weed out the weaker players.
It usually doesn't end up happening because, you know, someone realizes they're on the bottom of that and then the whole thing comes tumbling down.
I think Hugh might try something like that and when he realizes he can't do it, he's going to come gunning for me because he's not going to want the competition.
Although maybe his ego is big enough that he's going to want me around as a shield for him
because he's obviously a much more in shape and he seems like he's trying to be a lot more,
he might try to be as more strategic than he was in his last season.
But he's also got two other people that he played with that, and that's dangerous.
Let's talk about one of those people.
Tiffany.
Yeah, Tiffany, I get good vibes from.
I do.
And she looks like a really strong player.
I hope that, I hope we can get along and I hope we can make something happen.
But yeah, I don't, I don't get the straight-up foe.
No, I think, I think she could be a friend.
How about Genevieve?
I'm going to have to say enemy.
Talk to me about that pause.
Only because I don't know anything about her.
Okay.
I don't recall much of her season.
Okay.
So she seems very serious.
She seems like very strategic.
So my vibes right now are enemy.
So I got work to do with her.
Let's get into some recent faces.
Yeah.
What are your thoughts on Joe?
I mean, Joe, he just seems like such a good guy,
such a lovable guy, such a loyal, strong guy.
I feel like Joe's going to have to play a different game this season
because he played what I would consider almost a perfect game last season.
And him getting third place,
I think it's really going to wake him up and realize that,
You can't just be a challenge threat and, you know, be a, look, if he's trying to win the game,
he's going to have to do something different.
So I'm going to say threat at this point.
How about Camilla, friend or foe?
Oh, Camilla, she's just so smart and so cool and so strategic that I'm going to have to say foe.
All that being said, foe.
All that being said, but I would love to be her new Kyle.
If I could take his place and, you know,
But she's amazing.
I just, I loved her, I loved her story.
I got to meet her one time outside of the game at a charity event.
Just thought that she was so cool.
I'd love to work with her, but I think that she's going to become,
she's going to come gunning for me.
Well, let's talk about the old Kyle, friend or foe.
He's going to have to be foe.
Yeah.
I don't think Kyle can, we can't let Kyle get anywhere near the end.
You know, he's got, he's got a million dollars burning a hole in his pocket right now, you know?
What is he doing out here?
So luckily we've got some of those people already.
You know, we got Dee and Kyle, big winners.
And potentially, Arizzo or Savannah could be a winner too.
We don't know.
So there could be three winners out here.
And if anybody lets another Sandra situation happen, like, that would just be shame on us.
Yeah, so give me your thoughts about the 49ers.
What are you picking up from them right now?
Ah, the 49ers.
I like that.
So the interesting thing about these two new characters is, you know, obviously we know
nothing about them. We barely know their names.
We saw a little, like, quick blurb of them before
we left when they announced
the cast. And
they could potentially
be, you know,
they most likely
were big players in their season.
So the only reason why they'd be
invited back, one of them probably
won the game. That's what I'm going to assume.
If they didn't win the game,
then they both got to the very end and, like,
barely just missed winning it.
They were probably an alliance together. I think,
that Rizzo, you know, I've said this to every single person, but he looks like he's like
had to get his parents to sign a permission slip to be out here. Seriously. But he also looks
like he's a marathon runner. Maybe an ultramarathon runner. I mean, the legs on him are like tree trunks.
So he's probably a super physical player and very smart. Reminds me of maybe like a Cochran.
Like he probably knows this game so well. He's seen every single season. Maybe he's a savant
about Survivor. That's what I'm imagining in my head. He's also very very, very, he's a game.
very, very picky eater.
Oh, interesting.
Very picky eater.
Like, you'll eat rice and beef, and that's it.
Like, no vegetables.
So he, like, reminds me of, like, a little brother who's, like, you know, doesn't,
that everybody loves because he's the baby.
And so he gets coddled and, like, you know, he, like, doesn't eat any of his food,
but everyone's okay with it.
It's like, when I was a kid, like, my dad was like,
you're going to eat that.
You're going to sit there and eat it before you get up from the table.
You know, I don't know what that has to do with Rizzo, but.
No, I love this deep time.
into your childhood just in the tangent of better fun.
Exactly, exactly.
So, yeah, I think Rizzo is a savant.
I think half of his body is really strong.
Well, maybe three quarters because the brain is, he's probably a really smart guy.
So just everything in the chest area.
Yeah, he just looks like he needs to do some push-ups.
No offense.
What about Savannah?
Savannah looks like, she looks like a, she looks like if,
it's the best way of play.
She looks like if Parviti and Jenner.
Maraska had a
love child.
I don't know if Jenna
Maraska is the best
you know
example.
I don't think of a
anyways
Savannah looks
dangerous.
She looks like she's also
very smart, physical
and she's beautiful.
She's obviously
made some big moves
in Survivor 49, so
you know, at this point I'm going to
I'm going to have to say foes on both
of them. Just because, you know, we're afraid of the unknown. Right. Let's talk about the known
a bit. Who is one player from Survivor History that you wish was out here for 50 alongside you?
For my game, specifically or just in general? It could be both as a fan, could be as a player.
Oh, man. Look, as much as I, as much as there's two players. Okay, yeah, yeah, give me too.
I think that Richard Hatch would have been such a good way to bookend, you know, this whole thing.
I think he's kind of gone a little, who knows,
doesn't have the best relationship with Survivor anymore.
But Richard Hatch would be a great guy to have out here
just because he's the first winner.
And he's such a, you know,
a bullion, boisterous, huge character.
Him and all his naked glory,
it's probably maybe why they didn't ask him to come back
because, you know,
probably can't be naked on Survivor anymore.
That or, you're going to have to say,
someone like Russell Hans.
Interesting, okay.
You know, just because I think Russell Hance probably is the best villain that has ever played Survivor.
I think he thinks his game is better than it is, but he's also a fun guy just to watch because of his shenanigans.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Throw one weird scenario you out to, to finish this off.
So it's the loved one's visit.
You know it well, but you can only bring out a celebrity or a fictional character as a loved one.
Who you're picking him why.
Oh, my God.
You take your time on this one.
And there's a lot to come through all those Sanderson novels.
Yeah.
Oh, man.
Gosh.
I had to choose one.
I would go with Captain Planet.
Okay.
Come through 80s.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I don't know if you notice, but I've got this beautiful mullet that's partially Captain Planet inspired.
Really?
Yeah.
I mean, were you thinking about dying at Green just to go with the full illusion?
I mean, that would have been, it would have been cool if I'd done that.
It would have been a little too much.
So I don't think they probably would have disinvited me to Survivor if I'd done that.
But Captain Planet, I just, you know, as far as all the superheroes go, I think he's, for me, he hits, he touches this part of my childhood, watching, you know, on TV after school.
And it was all for a good cause.
And, you know, God knows we could use a little Captain Planet in this, in this world nowadays.
Yeah, me a little bit more heart, especially.
Yeah, exactly.
Well, this is so great talking with you, man.
I mean, I think your approach to the game is, for lack of their term, presenting it as that party in the back.
But you're a business up front.
Yeah.
I think that the way you're approaching this is obviously a very familiar setting, but in such a new place of your life is awesome.
And I'm so looking forward to seeing the new Aussie out there on these beaches.
Thank you.
After, you know, this show has played such a monumental role in your life.
You now come back to it with your life in such a new direction is so awesome.
So I cannot wait to see you out there.
Thank you.
I've been telling a lot of people that, you know, Ozzie was this.
character that I created on my first season that, you know, was my stage name. It was like this,
really, it was this character. And I'm kind of going to be benching Ozzy a lot more this
season. He's going to be sitting on the bench. I need to play a challenge or maybe as a, as a, as a,
if I need to get some food for somebody, you know, I can go out and fish. But I'm going to be playing
as Oscar this time. And it's something that I haven't done before. But, you know, I'm going to
be more of myself instead of a character that I've played in the past.
Contrary to some people's opinions, I would never be one to fish for likes, but I very much like
getting to talk with one of Survivors' most prolific fishermen in Ozzy.
That's, I think, one of the big appeal in bringing back some people from especially
these single-digit seasons, the teen seasons, because they have undergone so many things
in their life, even someone like Ozzie, who was on as recently.
as season 34, but it really does feel like he has a different headspace and haircut, I should say,
for this game, and we shall see how well it works out for him.
We've got but one more batch of preseason interviews to finish off the SILA tribe,
and things have been grouped up so nicely.
Let's continue the pattern here, shall we, as we are going to bring it home with two interviews
with coincidentally two former newscasters who currently live.
in Georgia. You'll be hearing my interviews with Rick Devons and our most recent Soul Survivor,
Savannah, Louis. So again, do not miss out on a second of anything we've got going on here in the
preseason we know survivor.com to subscribe to our podcast feed as well as Rob has a website.com
slash YouTube for the video versions of these podcasts. Thank you all, as always so much for listening.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on my interviews with Joe and Ozzie and how that might inform how
they'll do in Survivor 50.
Until tomorrow, everybody.
Take care.
Bye-bye.
