My name is Mike Bloom. And today, we keep churning through the proverbial mill of the Survivor 49 preseason by getting to know Christina Mills, another member of the Heena tribe. Of course, if you missed it, I started my coverage of this third and final tribe yesterday with Jason, one of this season's alternates turned last minute cast members. So feel free to check that out alongside any coverage of the previous two tribes that Rob and I have done as well.
Starting point is 00:03:22 have many ways to do so go to we know survivor.com to make sure subscribe to our survivor only podcast feed and if you want video versions of these interviews to put some faces to the names go to watch rhap.com or search rob has a podcast on youtube. Let's get into Christina Mills here. Now if you've been listening to these interviews throughout the preseason, you may already know Christina without actually knowing about her. That's because whenever I talk to the contestants about who they're picking up good and not so good vibes from in Ponderosa, she has been the answer to the former many times. A lot of people are taken in by Christina's warmth and positivity and good vibes overall. And I got to admit, tell me among the throng. I really enjoy getting the
Starting point is 00:04:19 chance to sit down and talk with Christina, just a bit to know about her before our interview. Christina is 36 years old, originally from Houston, currently lives in Edmond, Oklahoma, an experience that she talks about a lot in my interview when it comes to her specific situation there and how that does give her a bit of mental and spiritual fortitude. And she is an MBA career coach. She previously worked as a social engineer, but has transitioned jobs. into now helping people, you know, be able to search for their own path in life, as she is doing right now on Survivor.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Christina is looking at this as, of course, predominantly an experience to be able to take home a million dollars. But Christina is also looking at this surprisingly as an opportunity for a bit of a refresh, without getting into too much details, which she will over the course of our interview. She has gone through a lot of recent family changes in the past five years or so that is making her feel wanting for an opportunity to recharge. And believe it or not, that's what Survivor is to her. I don't know, maybe it's the big body of water that happens to be in her proximity in Fiji at all times,
Starting point is 00:05:42 considering how much she just finds Zen and calm whenever she is looking out at the wall. But regardless, I had a great time getting to dive in with Christina. Tomorrow, you will hear from the next member of the Hina tribe in Matt, just as an FYI. But for now, here's my interview with Christina. My name's Christina. I am 35 years old, and I do career counseling for graduate students. Oh, that's interesting. So you're just trying to advise them where they're going next.
Starting point is 00:06:16 Yep, what their career path is going to be. teach them how to network, help them with their resumes, kind of all that stuff, a little life coaching in there as well. Was higher ed something you were always looking to get into? No, not at all, actually. Really? So I'm actually an engineer. My background is in engineering and I actually got my MBA and I did work as an engineer in corporate America for like seven years. Yeah, but I'm a social nerd. And so I needed to be around people. And I got my MBA. I loved it so much. I love the people there. And then my mentor actually kind of stole me from corporate and brought me over. Wow. So you have just been going through so many different sectors trying
Starting point is 00:06:59 a little bit of everything. Yep. And I love just being around people. So being around my students, they're all adults. Like they range from literally age like 21, 22, all the way up to like 60s plus. And so it's really cool like just getting to connect with different generations. I mean, And on that note, it sounds a lot like the, you know, the pursuant of this very people-oriented game in Survivor. So talk to me about, you know, how you set out on this other path in your career. What's your history with watching the show and what made you decide to make that jump from fan to player? Yeah. So I started watching in season 34.
Starting point is 00:07:35 Me and my husband were opposites attract. We don't watch anything that's the same, maybe some sports. And he is a huge Survivor fan. And so he kind of just kind of tagged and watched wrong with him one. night just to kind of, you know. And that's interesting. It was game changers. You didn't have any context as to who these people were.
Starting point is 00:07:50 Not at all. I do now. I do now. But we, yeah, I had no idea anything. And I still loved it so much. I love that it's just real. It's raw. It's not like a few edited shows that are out there.
Starting point is 00:08:04 Like it is just real people coming out here on an adventure doing crazy stuff. Yeah. So then what made you decide to be one of those real people doing the crazy stuff? It gets a little dark. But I went through postpartum depression. So I had two kids back to back. They're only 10 months apart. And then it was COVID.
Starting point is 00:08:24 And it was kind of all in the same thing. So I went through postpartum depression. And then my mom started drugs and alcohol and it had an addiction. Oh my God. And then she unexpectedly died from a fentanyl overdose. I am so sorry. Thank you. I really do.
Starting point is 00:08:38 Appreciate that. And I was, it's just been a lot. Like it's been family stuff. It's been lost. It's just been a lot of heavy. And I was watching season 45. And Caleb, his joy just made me so happy. And then Emily, I have nothing in common with her at all.
Starting point is 00:08:58 Like nothing, but to see her. You were an engineer. You like numbers. Yeah, I guess. I guess a little bit. But she, like, just seeing her transformation, it just gave me some hope that maybe I could kind of get from the funk that I was in and get out of the depression and kind of get out of that and leave that you don't leave the grief behind but like don't let it
Starting point is 00:09:19 control you anymore and I call him Uncle Jeffrey um does he does and so Uncle Jeffrey like he came on the TV during that season I'll you know he always does his casting call and for some reason I just felt lead and I've never felt lead before that okay like I'm like seri I like my couch I have a very comfortable couch um but for some reason it was just something tugging at me and it was like you need a change. Yeah. And yeah, inside wide and that's kind of,
Starting point is 00:09:48 that's been the change. I mean, that is incredible. And I'm so happy. I can't even say you're on the other side of it because to your point, these are, these are passengers you take with you.
Starting point is 00:09:56 But I think the fact of the matter is, because my full disclosure, my wife was also postpartum as well. And you sort of learn, again, it's something that you want in the side car, not driving the motorcycle. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:10:06 You know? And so it allows you to be able to, especially an opportunity like this. And it's wild because there's so much stuff you can't control in this game. But in a way, you're sort of taking control. Exactly. You're literally saying, okay, this is part of me, but now I'm going to reclaim my life.
Starting point is 00:10:20 Like, I'm reclaiming everything and I still have all of that with me, but now it's time to move forward. I have to be better for my babies. I have to just be a better version of myself. Well, you mentioned some names before, Caleb, Emily, Surrey. Give me one winner and one non-winner who you identify with the most, personally, strategically, et cetera. Okay, let's see. A winner, Wendell. I love him. I just think he's, kind he just has a kind heart he was a worker um and i just feel like he um he just embodied the social play really well and so really identify with him and then he said a winner i don't identify with or non-winner okay non-winner oh carson carson yeah i know i mean it doesn't make
Starting point is 00:11:04 sense again former engineer like he was a social nerd i think he also like found his people he found ym and caroline and like those were his people those were his rider dies and And that's kind of like my strategy, too, is like, find those two people that you're going to be real loyal to. And we're like, we're going to the end together. What's your favorite moment in Survivor history? Does it involve some of the stuff you were talking about? So it's actually from season one. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:11:30 Throwback. Throwback all the way back. Because I think it really speaks to kind of like the social aspect. And it was when Kelly was about to get voted out and everyone was like plotting against her. And then the challenge was how well you knew people. And I was like, boom Like she won it And she was supposed to be the next one out
Starting point is 00:11:49 And it was like boom, in your face Like you are aligned with people And you guys don't even know the information And I do And I felt like that was like the biggest like mic drop moment Yeah, I will talk about hot takes later But I always felt that's a challenge they should bring back Like the fallen comrades
Starting point is 00:12:02 It's tough because Vesepia low key broke it Because she brought a notebook To the game And so she wrote everything down But now that that's not allowed Yeah like I feel like I kind of want it brought back too Yeah because I think it is something to like sit there at tribal council with the jury and basically be tested like,
Starting point is 00:12:15 yeah, how well do you know these people? If I don't make it to the final three, which I better. But let's say I don't and I'm on the jury. I literally, that was going to be like my question to them was like, okay, what's my daughter's name? What's like, I want to know. Like, do you know me at all? So if it doesn't get brought back, maybe I can bring it back.
Starting point is 00:12:33 What's one life experience you feel has prepared you for this? Is it that people forward nature you have in your job? Yeah, for sure. I mean, I like to say that I'm a black liberal woman living in Oklahoma and take that as you will, but that is a real thing. No, I've had people say like one life experience just being a black woman. Just being a black woman, especially in Oklahoma where he didn't know every single county is red. So that is for sure prepared me because, again, I have to work with, it's not even just my students. It's, you know, my kids, the parents that are at my kids school, we live in kind of a, you know, new development, young parents.
Starting point is 00:13:10 but across the way is like one of the richest neighborhoods in Oklahoma. So just imagine the, you know, the people that my students, I mean, my kids go to school with. And so it's even just like managing all these differences. And I don't ever want to be spiteful or anything in anyone. And I, like, I encourage difference, you know, like we can learn from each other. Yeah. And so that's just like, it's definitely going to help me out here. So even from that preparatory process, what was your prep like once you got the call here,
Starting point is 00:13:39 physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually? Yes. I should have prepped a little bit more physically. No, actually, I was in the gym a lot. So I love doing like cycle classes, boxing classes. I went rock climbing, which I haven't done in a while. And I was like, oh, my body is 35. I haven't done that in like 20 years.
Starting point is 00:14:00 This body feels a new tax bracket. Yeah, I was like, okay, am I afraid of heights now? What's happening? So did that. It was fun. I bought like little carnival games and my kids got to play it with me. Um, one of them was like the toss ring toss game and my son was like, miss, miss again. You're not going to be well. I was like, I was feeling that Jeff. I know he's
Starting point is 00:14:19 feeling Jeff. And I was like, I got this. Okay. Um, so I made videos for the family. Like, I still, I'm very much like the first born and so I take care of everyone. Um, but this is like the second time in my life I'm doing something for myself. And so like I still wanted to make sure everyone was taking care of. So I did that. And then obviously, like, I'm a preacher's kid as well. So it was a lot of spiritual, a lot of just, like, journaling. It's my first time manifesting stuff. So I just wanted to put things out in the atmosphere. So it was, it was definitely a lot of prep. I also did a 48-hour water fast. So that was- How was that? It honestly wasn't bad, because I started off with, like, cutting on, I was fasting with my church. But I went ahead and did, like, no
Starting point is 00:15:04 sugar, no sweets, no coffee. Like, I kind of took all that out. Yeah. And I already had those two weeks of headaches. And I was like, well, since I gave everything up, else up, I might as well practice for a survivor. Yeah, might as well practice the, 48 hours of the water. The sorry for you experience where you can't have anything.
Starting point is 00:15:19 Exactly. And so it actually was not bad. Okay. I was shocked. It wasn't bad. What would you say is your biggest superpower and your biggest piece of kryptonite that you're bringing into this game? Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:15:30 Okay. My superpower is that I'm very. very people like I don't want to sound I don't want to sound arrogant but people like I connect with them really really well yeah I do I really do and then by the end of one conversation they feel very protective of me and I don't want to take advantage of that but also I might have to take advantage of that absolutely yeah yeah so I think that's definitely my superpower is just that I'm gonna I really feel like I'm gonna know where every advantage is people are just going to trust me they're gonna want me to know and then I'm probably going to just use that information. to kind of get what I want. I don't ever want them to feel betrayed, but, like, I'm very strategic in how I, like, make all of that work. Absolutely. What about your kryptonite?
Starting point is 00:16:14 Oh, man. It's either going to be these challenges, these people are very athletic. So it's either going to be that, like, if we, if I suck before the merge and, you know, my tribe's like, we got to make it strong. I'm hoping not. I'm hoping that I, like, am actually really great out there. We'll see. There you.
Starting point is 00:16:37 Manifest, man, yes. Exactly. We're manifesting. So let's hope that I'm just really great out there. But, yeah, another one is that it is really hard for me to lie. Like, I know. Is it that you feel uncomfortable doing it? Is it that it just shows on your face?
Starting point is 00:16:52 It just shows on my face. Okay. If it's really weird, though, like, if I'm trying to get a good deal or, like, you know, I want the airlines to change my flight for free or something, like, I can become the best actors, you know, and I can lie my ass off. But for some reason, if, like, someone just, like, gets me off the spot and they're like, do you have an idol? I'm like, no, I don't know. No, not at all. Look over there. Yeah. I think it's when I'm, like, really caught off guard or something, and it's really hard for me to, like, keep a straight face and I become super awkward. So I'm going to
Starting point is 00:17:25 work on that. So besides, perhaps, you know, wearing that deception on your face, how do you think you're going to be perceived in this game. I actually think people are really going to like me. I do. I think that I'm going to be kind of their breath of fresh air when we're hungry and we're hot and we're sleepy and we're like grumpy or anything. I have a lot of practice with that with a four and a five year old. I have a five year old myself.
Starting point is 00:17:51 You know, you have to be on. You have to be on all the time. So I literally have had COVID mask on in the bed all day. And as soon as they get home from school, I'm like, okay, what do you guys want to eat? You know, like, you have to be on. And so I think that they're going to, like, that's what they're going to see in me and they're going to appreciate. But I'll just keep the tribe spirit up. Which is interesting, because you did write in your bio that if you don't get time to recharge, like, it can be a tough situation.
Starting point is 00:18:17 So, I mean, this is a deprivational environment. It is, but this is also a recharge for me. And I know that sounds really, really crazy. Interesting. It sounds crazy. But I know I was going to be gone. for, you know, five weeks. And so I told my husband, like, I will carry the load.
Starting point is 00:18:33 Like, you're going to have them for five weeks. I will do everything. And I am tired. I am tired, okay? I needed a break from those kids. And so, like, in a weird way, this is, as this actually is a recharge for me right now. And I'm sure in three weeks, then I'll actually need a recharge from the game as well. But, like, that's what's great.
Starting point is 00:18:56 Yeah. But that's what the beach is for. I'm very calm around water. Oh, interesting. It's really weird. Like, I've never had... And in Oklahoma, no less. Oh, I know.
Starting point is 00:19:06 I travel. We don't have any water there. We have, like, man-made lakes. But we, like, I have struggled with anxiety in the past. And it's really crazy if we're on a vacation or for anything. If I'm near the water, if I'm in a pool, I'm so hot. It's literally just like my zen. And so, yeah, so that'll be my...
Starting point is 00:19:26 It's either the motion or maybe it's just an idea of, like, being part of something. part of, yeah, it's just like, not to get religious also, but it's just seeing like God's hand, like it's just so massive. The ocean is just huge. Like, it's just, it's all inspiring. And so it just calms me. Well, let's talk about this ocean of people that have been hanging out with you for the past several days, because I'm sure you've had some, some thoughts, some assessments about them. So let's start on the positive side of things. You can give their initials. You can give a description of them. Okay. Who are you picking up good vibe from? Who are like, best case scenario? I hope we hit the beach day one, because this is a ride or die for me.
Starting point is 00:19:59 Um, definitely, uh, J.I. and, uh, A.m. They're both two guys. And I was like, I just like, I just, it's just something that you just sense in them that like, you all would legit be my rider dies. Like, you are going to fight hard for me. You're going to be loyal to me. Like, we're going to party after this. Um, those two for sure. And then, uh, is it S.B. I think. I think, I think it's S. B is her last name. But she's like my little sister. I can already tell. I'm like, I just want to, like, protect her. She just, like, I don't know. I just want to protect her for whatever reason. And then, oh, my gosh, I don't know her initials. I know it starts with an S. Describe her to me.
Starting point is 00:20:44 She is, she's very, like, earthy. Like, I think of Phoebe almost from Friends. Like, she had, like, a Moana-type aerial necklace on, and she's just, like, short brown hair. She had, like, on a sundress. today and we it's really funny she was sitting in front of me um all week and we would have the exact same mannerisms like we would just kind of put our feet up at the same time or we'd be like doing sudoku at the same time or we'd like be reading a you know inspirational book and i was like
Starting point is 00:21:14 wow are we like the same person there's gonna be a secret twin twist yeah i know we look nothing but maybe maybe it's like your doppelganger yeah yeah no it was it was actually very eerie um and so like if she i would love to be around her too because i just think her spirit would just keep me like super grounded and in ice in the game now let's move over to maybe the opposite side of things anyone you're picking up bad vibe from or you're feeling like are it could be a threat to you down the line um so originally i was thinking um jL he is the one that's like tatted up he has like a nipple ring and stuff he's really cool only one i think only on I was not looking that closely.
Starting point is 00:22:00 Let's make one thing. One thing clear, I was not looking that closely. But he's really funny and he's kind of like the life of the party. But I have a feeling he's going to be the one that's like, we need to get this game started. Like blindside, this, that. And so like I'm going to, I kind of got my eye on him a little bit. Going back to the first stuff, the positive vibes.
Starting point is 00:22:21 I mean, what are you looking for in an alliance? Is it just this sort of, you know, ability to have that good energy? Is it anything in particular in terms of qualities you're looking for? I am 100% of people person. I love personality tests, like all of those things. And so I'm a huge Harry Potter fan. And so I'm very good at sorting people a little bit. What are you?
Starting point is 00:22:41 I'm a hufflepuff if you can't tell. I don't think of you're, like, you're, it's a little bit of Gryffindor energy. A little bit, a little bit. But, no, I'm an extreme hufflepuff. And so I like, I'm really good at just reading people. naturally. And so I think Uncle Jeff always says it, trust your gut. Everyone in the process it says, trust your gut. And so there's really nothing like other than my gut. Like me saying, like, no, these are going to be my people. And I have a great village at home. So I trust my gut.
Starting point is 00:23:11 Well, in true Hubble puff fashion, let's talk some herbology here. Let's talk about what lives in the trees, idols, advantages. So talk to me about, you know, approaching the DNA of the new era when it comes to those types of things, journeys as well. How much you're going to incorporate that into your game? I definitely will. My sister threatened me. She's like, they're like, you need to go look at the eye. I don't care if it says beware.
Starting point is 00:23:32 Like, you take it. So I definitely, like, want to use that. The only thing is my sense of directions are horrible. There's only so many ways you can go here. I know, but, like, even just my awareness of things, like, my husband has literally, like, popped up at a store with me at the same time, and he's been, like, right here, and I did not know. So I feel like I'm going to be the person that they're like, like, I'm looking for it and they, like, highlight it.
Starting point is 00:23:57 And it's like, it's right there. But if I find it, definitely using it. Are you telling anyone you have it? No. Like, even, I hate that people open their mouth. Even to, like, you're, I mean, even to your most trusted, I think there's, you still need to be a little strategic with it. Like, I think about Rachel. She held her own funeral, like, literally her own funeral.
Starting point is 00:24:21 Yeah. And people were, like, given. or all these accolades, and she's like, oh, by the way. You know, like, oh, but, and you don't get those moments if people know about it. Yeah. And so, like, I think that's, it's easier for us not being on TV, like, you know, not being in the game, but, like, I just think people need to keep this damn mouth shut. Well, I want you to keep talking about this next thing, because we're going to have you stay in
Starting point is 00:24:43 production shoes. Okay. So you get the chance to bring in either a previous twist or advantage from the old or new era or you get to come up with something new, but you get to put something. in the game that you want to play with. What would that be for you? Oh, man, this is a good one. Hmm.
Starting point is 00:25:01 We already talked about the name one, bringing that one in. I love that. Oh, you know what was a fun one that I just saw was the super idol? That when two people find it, if two people have an idol, they could combine it. And then they could use it after the vote is red. I think that would be cool. Yeah, I think it's interesting because on paper, that super idol is so overpowered, right? It's just, well, you're not going to be.
Starting point is 00:25:23 vote for me because I'm going to survive no matter what. But now there's this collaborative effort and we saw that with Scott and Tide. It's like you could very easily leave someone high and try. Yeah. And you're like, sorry, I'm not going to use it. But if you do have it, like that would be really cool. And that's cool if you have a good alliance member
Starting point is 00:25:39 and you guys would just be in strategic together. I think of, oh, they're in the season right now together. They're like the secret. Oh, Camille and Kyle. Yes. Like if they had that together, like I feel like they would do something really crazy with it. What is your hottest survivor take. What do you think is your most controversial opinion about the show or a season or a
Starting point is 00:25:57 player? I and I love her. Sandra, I love you so much. I really do. I promise. But like I don't know if she should have won her first one. Her first one, okay, because I feel like the more controversial one is Heroes versus Villains. No, I think it's maybe it's just like the, the back then, you know, like a lot of, a lot more things that went on then are acceptable now that weren't thin, and that's why she won, but, like, I don't know that she should have gotten that first one. You think that Scoutmaster Lil should have won? She played her game.
Starting point is 00:26:33 She really did play her game. And she, it was, like, it wasn't her fault that she had to be in that outfit. Valid. Very valid. Like, it wasn't her fault at all. And I do think that she, like, she played a really good social game. So when it comes to what we've seen in the new era, we've seen some disaster tribes. I think we could use that term.
Starting point is 00:26:52 tribes that go three, maybe four times in the pre-merge. You know, don't want to manifest this. We're not going to manifest. But, you know, is this something that you would anticipate you'd have to change your game for if you wind up on one of those tribes? If I do wind up on it, I honestly think it's going to stay the same. Like, it's still very much the social part at that point. Like, because now you're like, okay, I think at that point I'm going to have to find,
Starting point is 00:27:15 like, the second or, you know, two or three people and say, all right, we know that we kind of suck. But let's just assume that we don't need to be strong at this point. Like, if we, let's just go to assume we're not going to do well, but we need each other in the merge. And that's actually very strategic to have, to be the bottom and only have like two or three people going into a merge, you become the middle and you become the power of people. So at that point, you really have to like start selling like, okay, I may not be the strongest and I know you guys want to keep the tribe strong. But also, if we're keep losing, at least the two or three of us are going to go in and we're going to be very powerful. so maybe let's like cut our losses a little bit and then just like keep it and just look forward because if there's two of us then you know probably there's a merge coming or drop your buff something's happening right and now we're going to become powerful so going from the beginning of the game to the end something that's so interesting about the jury vote is that jurors have unlimited criteria they can use it could be likeability relationship strategy resume story right now do you have a core value that if you were a juror again manifesting you'll be in that final day but if you were what you would vote on.
Starting point is 00:28:20 You know, if the sentence is, if I'm a sure, I would vote for blank. Fill in that blank for me. Mine is just good overall play, honestly. And I'm not going to hold if someone's lying or what,
Starting point is 00:28:31 like, I'm not going to hold that against them. I really just want to know who played a really good game and who can own it. Like, I want you to tell me what you did. Like,
Starting point is 00:28:40 if you're a social player, like, what were the social things you did? If you're a physical, like, I need to see something backing it up. So for me, it's definitely just going to be
Starting point is 00:28:48 overall play with integrity. Okay. Interesting. Talk to me more about that. I do not like when people promise things on their kids or they promise things on God or their parents or whatever and then you're lying. Like I don't care if you even have it prearranged with like your family at home or anything.
Starting point is 00:29:08 Like I just don't I just don't like it, especially if you're lying. Like that just feels like you're taking it a little too far. And so if that's something you're done and you're like lying. about it, then I don't think I can vote for that. All right, I'm going to throw a weird scenario out at you. You get a loved one's visit, but it has to be a celebrity or a fictional character. Who are you picking and why? Okay, let's see.
Starting point is 00:29:34 I would pick, I feel like you have to say Beyonce, but no. No, I'm going to go with Jesse Williams. I love him. I know it's so random, but he's my hall pass. Okay. well he's my this is paradise
Starting point is 00:29:50 I suppose he's my hall pass he is he's just he's so talented and yet he's so
Starting point is 00:29:58 humble at the same time I actually got to see him in a play that he did in New York was it was it all
Starting point is 00:30:05 oh gosh I don't say all in it was like the baseball it was the baseball one it was the baseball one and he you know
Starting point is 00:30:13 came out and signed autographs and everything and it had been just literally like a month after my mom mom had died.
Starting point is 00:30:18 Yeah. Um, and he was just busy and I was like, thank you for making me smile. And he was like, oh my gosh. I'm so like, he took the time and even say like, I'm very sorry and like sign something. And he's just like, he's just so sweet. Plus he's for the culture and he just the like he is an activist. And I just love everything about him. Well, thank you for making me smile for being the Jesse.
Starting point is 00:30:37 I like this was, this was such a delight. I mean, from the minute you sat down and you said like I'm a, you know, I'm a social, you know, a social worker essentially, not quite literally. Like, you're just, the way you come across is so felt. And thank you so much for being so open as well, because it allowed us to be able to get insight into who you are and, you know, be able to see the person that's going to absolutely kick ass for the next 26 days in this game. Yes.
Starting point is 00:31:04 For Manifesting.
