Hello everyone. Shannon Gassier getting you ready for an Australian survivor versus the world
accident review. It happened. Your prayers worked. Thank you for those.
who prayed to the survivor gods.
I spoke to Surrey Fields.
Right now, I just spoke to her, which is crazy.
What a dream.
What an absolute dream?
What are the odds?
Like, what needed to happen to get here?
Like, to be covering the show,
to have Australian Survivor get to the point where they do an international season
and cast Surrey.
Like, really, the universe had to line up in an incredible way.
So if the ex-interview didn't happen, that would have been very sad.
But it did.
And it was wonderful.
I hope you guys enjoyed it.
When I told Peter, I'm like, I have to, you know,
I hear it as like some of the things I want to tell Surrey,
he was like, that's very sweet.
She's going to be like, great, another freak.
And maybe, honestly, maybe.
But I'm glad I got to tell her what she means to me.
And I think there's so many of us.
And I think we also, we did speak about the game.
And I just like, I took some time.
You know what I mean?
Like, I just like, I kept it going.
And they didn't tell me to stop.
So I hope that you enjoyed this ex-interview with Surrey.
We had the recap this week with Puyah and Mike and Chappelle.
We had a podcast with Rob,
wrapping it up as well. We've had exits with, we had cast this week as well,
and Janine and Poverty. Luke has been busy, but I am in touch with him, hoping to get
something next week, also hoping to get maybe some longer interviews with someone like Poverty,
and we'll see who else. So remember to say subscribe or subscribe to
Weidoglobal Survivor.com. Follow me at Shannon Gates, because I'll post all of that.
So you won't miss anything now that we are firmly into the postseason. But thank you for listening
to this. I hope that you enjoy it. It was a dream come true for me. And I think you will hear that.
And yeah, I hope that you enjoy.
I'm sorry to speak
I'm trying to speak to
I'm sorry
it's my dream to speak to you
I'm your biggest fan
I can't believe I'm speaking to you
I love you so much
Thank you
I know a lot of people say that
and you're beloved
but I really think I'm number one
I watched the whole season
of big brother that you were on
and I'm not a big brother watcher
I watched that whole season
we covered it every week we did something
called the Surrey Cap, just talking about you.
I had this cap that says Surrey, Surrey Cap.
I love you so much, Surrey.
I don't have enough time to tell you how much I love you so much.
Oh, thank you so much.
That is so awesome.
Thank you.
You don't know.
Starting this 20 years ago, I had zero expectation, right?
So it's almost, it makes me a little bit like,
It's just, I'm just me.
So it makes me for clipped a little bit like, damn, because I know I could feel that you
really mean that, right?
So it makes me like almost feel a little unworthy, right?
No.
I need you to know that I truly, truly, truly appreciate it.
I do.
You're not unworthy.
Like, I think it's like you're a uniquely special person.
Like, look at the love that you inspire.
And I think like you've changed Survivor a million different ways, but it gets more
than that.
think i've been thinking about it and i think what it is it's like you have this like warmth and light
and this joy that emanates from you and like it's come through the screen to us so i think you're
so worthy you know i think you make the world a better place and the fact that we get to watch that
we've watched it for almost since the beginning i've been watching you for for 20 years we've watched
you like that almost and like it's genuinely a gift and it's one of the best things that's come out of
survive for me to watch you so you're please never think you're unworthy because there's many people
can't be wrong i mean people are wrong about a lot of things but this time they're
got it right that you're so beloved
and you've earned everything. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much.
You don't know what that does to me. Thank you. Thank you. I'm going to do the interview.
Okay. But I just wanted to let you know how much I love you.
Sorry, um, an honor to have you on Australian Survivor. What an absolute dream and a gift.
Tell me about poverty. Tell me about that relationship with her. Um, you guys are so loyal to
each other. Did you ever plan on turning on her or what was like the thought process throughout?
Yeah. No, never. I love part of it.
Let me tell you how me and Parvety met.
And I don't know that they showed all of this, but when Micronesia started at the beginning
of Micronesia, we're all standing on one side of the beach with Jeff.
And Jeff says on across this beach, there's some boats over there and something, maybe
an idol or something or other.
And we're all like, yeah, and we're used to playing Survivor.
So we're used to Jeff saying, okay, cut.
They break everything down.
And then they bring boats and they take us over.
and then they start recording again.
So everybody's just standing there
and Jeff's like,
what are you waiting for?
I sat across the beach
and everybody dashes in the water.
The girl can't swim that good, right?
So I'm like, oh, Lord,
I'm not going to stand there on this side.
I dash in the water too.
And just so happens,
halfway out, up to halfway out,
you can walk.
But once you get a little past halfway,
you have to start swimming.
Right?
So I'm a little bit,
past halfway and there's Parvety right in front of me and everybody's chaos running to the swimming
to the other side and I'm a little bit struggling and there was a hand that reached out to me and said
come on I got you just hold my hand and if you can't go just turn on your back and float and that was
Parvety and that's how Parvety and I's relationship started at my one of my in my mind in the game
lowest times because I'm not sure if I'm going to make it all the way over here I'm not that
comfortable in swimming. And in a game where you want people to fail, you want people to
leave, you want to vote people out, somebody's reaching out of a hand to help me, that was the
start of Parvety and Nott's relationship. And it's been that way ever since. It's beyond the
game. It's obviously been for decades beyond the game. Did you ever think about, you know,
Parvety is about to win the game. She won the season, you know, six votes to one. Did you ever
think about how you would do against her with the jury and the hope that you would get there?
obviously in Micronesia I think I think you had that personally I've fought for that for decades and I'm still angry about it but did you like look at this game and and see any potential there or did you think it would be a close one or what did you think I felt like I could I would have a shot I felt like if I felt one honored that party knowing that I could potentially have a shot would be willing to sit in a final with me that's the type of love that I have in feel for her as well
but I do feel like had I been there,
it might not just be a runaway or easy way from this part.
Never, never with you there.
We desperately wanted to see you in a final tribal council,
and hopefully it's something we'll see one day.
How much did you know about what was happening?
Because we see she tells you about the idol stealer.
Did you know she'd ripped up the idol stealer?
Like how much were you involved in those machinations
that she was doing behind the scenes?
Harmony kept me, and that's a part of the trust.
and that's what like just solidifies what we already had and made if you're ever questioning does she really trust me
information is the only currency you have in survivor so someone is telling you pertinent crucial information that could be used against you
then you know that that person trusts you 100% and that just made me love and trust poverty even more when she told me
everything that she had even about her little cookies that she didn't share with me well they were covered in glass so she might have been trying to save your
life again if they were covered in in sand and glass they weren't the best cookies um obviously we see
lisa reacting to you she was very much the voice of the people um and you i saw you invested so
much in the in the relationship with the internationals with kass and tommy and Lisa could you tell me
about those relationships and how it gets to the point where obviously they all go in the span of two
nights and i thought you put so much great social work into those relationships so what was that like
and what was your perspective on that double tribal council
and then Lisa heading straight out the door right after?
I hate it for Lisa to go.
And I loved Cass and Tommy.
I loved our little group.
Like I never played a game where I left
or play Survivor and I left and I wasn't like,
so and so.
And this season of Survivor, I never felt that.
So I would have been thrilled to go all the way to the end
with the World Tribe.
However, once you come after my number one ally and that, but for that, but for that,
it could have been us five in the end and then figure it out from there.
Because I would have felt safe enough with Lisa to do that.
I was so sad when I had to vote like Lisa and Cass.
Even when Cass was like, Sarin, look at me, look me in the eyes.
This game is heart-wrenching because you do.
or I do form those connections and they're genuine connections.
I can't fake the way I felt about Lisa.
I can't fake the fun that cast.
And even Tommy, like, I genuinely like these people, right?
So that's what makes this game that I love so difficult because I'm a cancer.
And I love people.
And they love you.
And that's what makes this game hard for me.
It is super hard for me at time.
and I'm super loyal.
And if I know you're loyal to me,
it's difficult for me to turn on you.
Yeah, I mean, Lisa was loyal.
Lisa loved you.
We'd spoken about it before even she went out there.
We had heard you weren't on the season
and she was so upset about that
and we'd already spoken about that.
So when I heard you were both on the season,
I was like, oh, this is like better than winning survivor
that she's out there with you.
What an incredible experience for her.
So what about Luke and Janine?
That comes together.
It's just like important Final Four.
We see a lot with Janine.
From your perspective,
how did how did that all evolve to that point i love luke and when i met luke when we merged and i
had my first conversation with luke i said to luke i see you and when i said that to luke i meant
i see you on a level outside of this game i understand the person that you are i relate to the
person that you are and i think luke felt that and knew that was genuine janine as well like i felt
that Janine, although we're playing a game,
from the moments, even when we just
would encounter each other at challenges
and I got to hug Janine and say hello
because sometimes we can say hi and I can't wait to play with you.
I felt when Janine was like,
I really want to play this game with you.
I felt that Janine meant that, right?
So it was just like the first day of school.
And you are looking, like you're not sure about the people
and then you lock eyes with that friend.
And hopefully you're finding a friend
that you can go through all your years of school with
and there'll be a lifelong friend.
That's kind of what happened
when I kind of locked eyes with Luke
and when I locked eyes with Janine as well.
At that final four, when you're voting for Luke
and you think Luke's the best at fire
and that's a concern for you,
even though you did make the fire and it was great.
But Janine told me that she wasn't very good at fire.
Was there a consideration to put two on Janine
in case it became a fire challenge against Janine?
and to try get to the final three that way?
I think we were so concerned about the amount of Ozzy's on the jury
and the amount of Luke's influence on people in his previous history
and him winning Big Brother.
And it just did not feel as safe to have Luke sitting there in the final three.
What I have preferred to make fire against Gene, absolutely.
however we really did not want Luke
we thought Luke had a better chance than
what was exhibited at winning the votes in the final
yeah we thought Luke was more of a threat
yeah you and Luke and I think are the only two people
who've played Survivor and the traders and Big Brother so I thought
that might be an interesting connection between the two of you
when you got to the jury was that
was that what how people felt like did Luke have a better
chance than we saw I mean obviously your voting
for poverty and she takes it out.
She does so well at the final tribal council.
But did you feel that there was that Luke energy there
or people were open to it when you were a juror?
I think that we were expecting, we were waiting.
I think if Luke could have maybe articulated his story
a little bit better, then it would be,
like obviously poverty is going to get my vote.
However, I think, I don't know, Luke kind of got jammed up a couple of times in his speeches, right?
And it all comes down to that, right?
Yes, we consider your gameplay.
But if you have to give a game, I can sell snowflakes to an Eskimo, right?
I'm sure.
If Luke was to bring that energy, it may have been a different outcome.
Yeah, you think he was that close that, yeah.
I mean, Pav did amazingly well.
Luke is very likable and he is like Australia's treasure.
So I definitely get that aspect.
Everybody loves Luke, right?
Like, everybody loves Raymond.
Everybody loves Lou.
They raised, yeah, a lot of money for him, $550,000 when he lost last time.
Exactly.
Right.
Here's my point.
That was another reason.
We're like, ooh, do we want to bring this person?
Right?
For those reasons.
And that's what we expected to see in the final speech.
And Luke really didn't deliver that.
Had he, how come might have been a little.
bit different. What about the other Australians, Shawnee and Sarah and Kirby? What was that relationship
like for you? I love them. I love them. I love Kirby. Sarah's so beautiful. Shawnee and I didn't
really talk or connect as much. But again, this is a season that I did not feel any like there's
nobody there that I don't want to see again and wouldn't be thrilled or run into their arms if I saw any of
again. Like I've played Survivor before and there's a few people that I'd be like, damn, did
they see me? But not for this season. What about like Tony? I love Tony as well. I've always
wanted you guys to connect and it's never really happened. Was Tony going home before the shoe of
it all? Like when you walk into that tribal council, do you think he played himself out of the game
or were you voting him out?
No, we had no desire to vote out, Tony.
We wanted to keep America strong.
We wanted to keep the world strong.
So I was kind of like taking aback when Tony one voted for me.
And then on his way out, you guys didn't see.
Tony says, that's messed up poverty.
I would have been loyal to you, not you, Ceree.
What did I tell to you?
So I think I was.
was ready willing and prepared to play the game with tony i did not want to target tony i wanted us to
stay world strong and america strong as long as possible it just so happened that once the fire was lost
tony was acting a little sketch and i had better relationship with lisa and parvety cast and they all wanted
yeah i mean you weren't going to go to rocks for tony though like if they're sticking by tommy
girl I'm not going to rocks
the only people I might go to rocks for like
I might have went to rocks for poverty
I feel that strongly
and my mama
other than that
that's it
my kids
yes and HB
and HB of course
you'll send HB my love will you tell him
Shannon from Australia says hello I love
absolutely oh he just left to go to the gym
he is going to die that he missed
hearing that but I will tell him
I was so upset that he didn't come out for like a loved one thing.
I was like, where is HB?
I will let him know.
Please do.
Tell him, Shannon from Australia.
I think he'll get it.
Yeah.
How much had you seen of Australian Survivor?
Like, which of these players did you know of before you played with them?
I knew all of them.
I knew every last one of them.
I was scared to death of Kirby.
I couldn't wait to play with George.
I thought the golden gob was just as golden as they said he was.
I knew Shawnee was dangerous.
a challenge beast. I knew Janine. I knew all of them. I bought a VPN to watch Australian
Survivor before I even knew this was going to be a thing. That's incredible. I love that.
I'm a survivor fan. Like, I'm a true fan of Survivor. Like, if there's a survivor and I can get
access to it, I'm going to watch it. Yeah. Well, I mean, that's one of the things that I love
about you. What about that first vote with Rob? That, like, him, he's coming to you,
and he's putting your name out, and then he's coming to you to vote out poverty, which, as we know,
at any point is a silly thing.
So tell me about that vote.
Hey, Rob, first of all, Rob,
how dare you try to vote for me first?
That was like, uh?
Secondly, Rob
overestimated his powers and under-delivered, right?
Rob was so
almost to arrogant.
Like, this is what's going to happen.
Tony, you're good.
to read, go run around and beg for your life in this game.
And you know what?
Matter of fact, Parvety is not going to vote you.
You're going to vote Parvety?
Don't worry about.
Just sit down.
That was Rob's whole attitude.
And I'm like, you want?
So are we playing like this?
I mean, Rob does have a big personality and he's a big guy, but you got to be, you
got to connect with people before you can direct people.
And I think that's the point that Rob missed.
And I was a little bit like, okay, and don't come for me.
Yeah, what about the 16-day game?
Like, that's so different.
You've played so much Survivor.
Like, how did that compare for you as someone who's one of the most experienced players in Global Survivor to do something like this?
In Australian Survivor, it's a very different format.
You know, I thought it would be easier because it was shorter.
The time was shorter.
But in all actuality, it's harder.
Because I'm kind of like a layback player.
I want to be invisible.
I want to kind of ease into it.
But when it's such a short game and you see people hit the beach running and there's
conversation, you're like, damn, they can't be already talking.
Yeah, they are.
And if they're not talking to you, they're talking about you.
So you better get to it.
So I had to kind of shift in my style of play and like immediately start talking to people.
And you don't want to overdo it because then people are like, look, there she is.
is there she that's what she does so it's just kind of a fine balance in playing these shorter games and
you suffer just as much it's just as hard the the sand is just as rough the elements are just as bad
the breath smell just bad but just because it's 16 days none of that changes so it's just
it adds more uh on your plate when it's a shorter season and not in a good way yeah well you're
picking up like poverty's votes i think you've had nine votes
ever before this season across all of your seasons.
And I think you got eight in the season.
Like, it was borderline disrespectful, especially, I mean, maybe fewer than eight if they
aren't spelling your name correctly.
I don't think it should count when it's, when there are no letters like Surrey,
I think that the whole vote should be thrown out.
But yeah, I mean, did you, what did you think about that?
Because you're someone who does not get voted for.
And you were picking up all these votes.
You were surviving.
But, yeah, the votes.
And no, what the hell was going on?
I thought they had fell and bumped their head because every time they would run the
bus back and forth over Parvite, drag her name through the mud, then it came time to vote and
they voted Sarie. And I feel like it was just because maybe at the time they knew Parvety had
an idol or some kind of advantage or they thought at least they figured, well, if we can't get
the biggest threat, we'll get the next biggest threat. So let's vote, Surrey. Either way,
we got a threat out of this game. But yeah, I was kind of like, when you say borderline
disrespectful, I agree with you. Because a lot of times I'm like, oh, a disrespected. A distrust.
respect clutching my pearls they wrote my name but it's survivor right and i survived thank god well speaking
of disrespect i hate fire i will no longer make any fires well i will not be using fire in any capacity
where do we stand with fire like obviously you're going out to play survivor 50s is something we haven't
seen yet you have played it cannot wait for that cannot wait to watch you cheering for you all the way but
you made you made the fire you know like we saw it and it burnt the rope so we in a better place
with fire or do I swear off fire completely?
You know what? I never stare. I look a challenge straight in the eyes and I'm never
run away from a challenge. I want all the smoke all the time. So we are in a better place.
No pun intended. We are in a better place with fire. And listen, I felt like we were in a good
place with fire from the get-go. It just didn't work with me for Sarah. And Luke happened to get his
going a little bit quicker than I did.
So I would be confident
in another fire challenge. Do I
want to be in one? Absolutely
not. I mean, I didn't want to be in the two that I
was in. However, if I have to,
I'm never running away from a fire
challenge. Well, that's incredible. That speaks
to what, like, what
an incredible figure you are, Surrey. I look
up to you so much. You are absolutely
a hero of mine. You have so much
strength, so much intelligence, so much grace,
so much kindness. Like,
what a gift to have you to look at, to
to look up to I I'm grateful I'm so grateful to you for everything you've given survivor everything
you've given me almost 20 years and it's still going through 50 um next year and I just I love it so much
I love you and talking to you now I'll never forget it ever it's a dream of mine and thank you
so much for coming on to the podcast oh Shannon thank you so much did you send me an email I sent you
a lot of a lot of messages this is actually a true story my when my husband proposed years ago seven
years ago he um he did a survivor thing he like made a tribal council and he um he like got survivor
players and he was trying to get hold of you and he couldn't get hold because it was before cameo he
he wanted you to be in it and i was like why aren't you proposing and he was like i've got
something in the works and he was like waiting for you that's what he said anyway maybe he just
didn't have enough together but that like but i did i message you in 2017 a couple of times
and you you commented on the thing with bryce that was me i brought
as a mutual friend.
Lisa's a mutual friend,
Marianne, a lot, anyone.
I'm like, you help me meet Surrey.
And no one ever did, Siri.
And all it took was you going on Australian Survivor.
And that seemed so improbable.
But I'm so grateful.
Like, this is the best thing ever.
So, yeah, I love you so much.
And I never feel that you're unworthy because you inspire that in people.
And that's all you.
Thank you, Shannon.
That is so, thank you.
I don't know how to say.
I wish I knew how to say it in different languages.
Merci, Bocou.
Grazie, thank you so much.
Yeah, again, I never intended or even understood or thought or anticipated that I would have any impact.
And to hear you say such kind things, it really, it warms my heart.
So thank you.
Really, from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you.
Well, it's my pleasure.
your impact is clearly global all the way in Australia.
People care.
People, people love you, Surrey, and that's all you.
But thank you so much, and I hope you have a great rest of your day.
You too.
You too, Shannon.
Thank you.
