Survivor.
Survivor.
Survivor.

The adventure of a lifetime.
Tony, I'm a huge.
Tony, I'm a huge fan.
I'm very nervous.
I'm very starstruck.
I think you're the best player of all time.
I've been a fan for 11 years.
I'm like, I'm shaking to talk to you honestly.
Like, I'm a huge fan.
I've said that.
I've been a fan for 11 years and I love you.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Thank you for everything you brought to Survivor.
I couldn't be more thrilled to talk to you.
It's a highlight of my career and my life, honestly.
Oh, wow.
Thank you so much.
I'm shaking.
And we need to talk about the season.
It's such an honor to have you on Australian Survivor, Tony.
Tell me about the shoe.
What was the thought process behind the shoe?
The shoe was just panic mode.
I was in total panic mode.
When I went and I asked Cass, who are you voting for?
And she says, I don't know.
You know, I'm asking the players, hey, what's going on?
What name?
And they tell me, I don't know.
That's when I say, you know what?
I have to do something.
So I went into my bag and I started bluffing, talking about my bag of tricks.
And while I'm going in there, I'm just trying to think of what I'm going to do because
I don't have a plan going in there.
So I was just going through my bag
and I seen a shoe, I seen a rock.
I was like, you know what?
Let me just pull this out.
So, I mean, I tried to do everything I could, you know.
I just didn't want to sit there and get blindsided.
That's the one thing that I didn't want to do, you know?
So I tried and I wish it would have worked.
If it would have been the most epic, epic travel ever, you know?
But it didn't work backfired.
You're up against it, Tony.
It's not your fault.
It was a very hard spot.
What was your relationship like with internationals?
Because I think you're trying to kind of work with them,
obviously to try take out Surrey there.
We see kind of the bond with Tommy.
What was your relationship like with Cass, Lisa, and Tommy?
So Cass, after watching it, I have no idea with that, that Adam, how adamant she was to get
rid of me.
I have no idea where that came from.
That was shocking to me.
I did not expect to see that, you know, every time I went to talk to her, she never
wanted to talk strategy.
So I figured she doesn't want to work with me.
That's fine.
But I had no idea she would be gunning to get me out.
I mean, the only thing I can think of, she watched my previous.
seasons in the U.S. versions, and she was like, this is a guy I don't want to work with,
and she didn't give me a chance. But I would have definitely worked with her. And I wanted to
work with her, you know? Tommy, we were working together by default. You know, the girls
completely aligned right in front of us. And Tommy and I were just sitting like puppy dogs
in the shelter the whole time, just watching the four girls make plans to get one of us
out the whole time. So, you know, it was like, hey, guys, go get us sticks, go make a fire,
we're cold, go get us some coconuts. And that's what time, what me and Tommy were doing the whole
time.
Yeah, well, Tommy, I know, is a big fan of yours as well.
So he was probably a little starstruck.
What about someone like a Lisa?
Do you have a relationship with her?
So same thing with Lisa.
Lisa was quiet, you know, more reserved, more laid back.
Again, every time I try to talk strategy to her, she shut me down.
She made it clear she was a serifan.
She made it clear that she's an encyclopedia of survivor players.
So I knew that she knew my game as well.
So I, you know, I go into these games with my wings clipped.
I can't just go in there and just play my game.
I have to play their game until I can gain some traction and then I can do it, you know,
I can play my own game after I have an army built behind me.
But until then, I just got to go with the flow, you know, which I hate doing, but it's part
of adapting.
Yeah, I'm not going to lie to you, Tony, that Lisa and I actually did a podcast about winners
at war.
We did the premiere of Winners at War.
So she's even spoken about your game before, but I mean, there's a lot to be threatened
by in your catalog, Tony, so you can't really blame them for being scared.
But I just wish that they would play this season.
Don't play the player from another season.
Because, you know, like what I did in season 28,
I was the most untrustworthy player in season 28.
By season 40, I was the most trustworthy player to my alliance.
I wasn't turning my back on my alliance in season 40.
Me and Saro made it all the way to the end.
Ben, you know, Denise, we were there.
You know, so it's like you've got to play the game,
the season that you're in.
Don't play the player from other seasons or other shows.
You know, I wanted to work with somebody.
I did. I really wanted to work with them, but, you know.
Yeah. Tony, if it was me, if I was on that island, I'd be saying what
Lisa did to Sarita. Both of you, probably, I'd never vote you out, all of that.
So you're preaching to the choir, preaching to the choir, big team TV fan over here.
But what about, like, the U.S. people? Poverty and Surrey, you've kind of played with
before in various not really ways. What was happening there?
So when I seen Poverty and Surrey, I was happy to see that it was two Americans, three Americans in
total. I was happy. I was scared because I'm like, okay, there's three Americans, people
going to try to break that up right away. I never talked, I never had any interactions with
poverty outside the game, you know, Surrey. I never, I never even have interactions with them in
the game. I never played with them. You know, I never got to see poverty in season 40. I never
got to see Surrey in season 34. So, you know, so my thing was, I know, I know poverty's not a fan of
mine from the Kageiandes. I remember Jeff Probus was doing an interview with her, hey,
hey, poverty, who do you think should win this game? She's like, I don't know.
Oh, you know, I like Woo.
It's like, she was playing a great game.
And she just couldn't find herself to say,
Tony's playing a great game.
So I know she's not a fan of mine,
especially when we did season 40.
She sent the disadvantage to me.
She didn't vote for me to win when I played a great game.
So I know she wasn't a fan of mine, you know?
That doesn't mean that, you know,
I went into the game saying,
oh, I got to get poverty out first because she's not a fan of mine.
I was like, I have to work with them.
Because good players know you have to stick together,
you know, we're all we have out here.
we're going up against Aussies, we're going up against internationals that stick together.
And that was the plan.
And maybe it was still the plan with poverty and Surrey, but when they didn't tell me about
the key and I knew that they had the key or I knew poverty had the key, I didn't want to
work with you no more because I'm not going to let you blindside me, you know?
Yeah.
Was there any idea about, because obviously you go to try target Surrey, poverty is immune,
you go to the internationals.
Was there anything with the shoe plan to maybe try to go to them and targeted international
or any other way to do that?
or they felt like such a locked box, pun intended,
that the only way was to go to the internationals
and try and get them to work with you
and be scared for Tommy.
Like, was there away an avenue there
with the Americans at all?
Where?
At the tribal council?
Yeah, with the shoe.
Yeah, well, the tribal council,
before I even did my shenanigans with the shoe,
I went to Cass and I said,
hey, Cass, what's going on?
Who are you voting for?
I don't know.
I don't know.
And when I heard that, I was like, you know what?
I said, okay, well, I do know what I'm doing.
And that's when I had to come up with this,
whatever I could find to try to bluff.
And then when the girls were talking on the side, I told Tommy,
I said, Tommy, please go talk to the girls because you guys are internationals.
You got to try to break up these two.
Obviously, I knew I wasn't going to target poverty, but I wanted to create some kind of
confusion, some kind of chaos where they can vote for Ceree and get Ceree out of there
just to save me.
Because I'm not going to tell Tommy, hey, Tommy, go tell the girls, let's vote for Lisa
or let's vote for CASS, you know?
So I told Tommy, go to the girls and say, get rid of Ceree.
I'm willing to get rid of one of the Americans.
and it just didn't work out.
I didn't know how hard cast wanted me gone,
how bad she wanted me gone.
I mean, that was news to me.
I mean, I was kind of disappointed,
disappointed to see how bad she wanted me out for no reason.
I thought we had a good relationship.
I never pushed it with strategy.
I just thought she didn't want to work with me,
so I gave her her a space.
But to want me out that bad, that's, I don't know.
She probably has three million reasons, Tony, to be fair.
So, yeah.
There's always a time.
There's a time and a place to do it.
That wasn't it, you know?
I agree with you.
I hated every second.
At least not in my opinion.
Yeah.
And again, preaching to the choir.
I'd love to take it back to the Rob of it all.
When Rob went home there, that first tribal council,
any way around that, any way to work with Rob maybe to get things on a different place?
Or like, why did Rob become such a target there?
Again, again, Shannon, when we went on the beach and we seen four girls and three guys,
we're like, you know, listen.
And what happened was when Rob,
Rob started saying, let's get rid of the week.
Everybody's like, oh, hold on, hold on.
What do you mean get rid of the week?
So typically in physical challenges, like brutal physically challenges like we had there,
it's usually, for the most part, it's a woman.
There's some women that can outdo a lot of men.
But for this purpose of this game, Ceree was the weakest link when it comes to physical challenges.
So when Rob started pitching that out there, and there's four girls there, and they're like,
oh, you know what?
So if Rob and Tony and Tommy get their way, who's going to be next?
Another girl?
What's going to happen?
So when Rob started talking that and the girls came up to us and said,
we got to give her to Rob.
Me and Tommy knew our place.
We were like, yes, man, whatever you guys want.
You know, whatever you guys want, we do.
And that's what happened.
You know, they had the majority.
We weren't going to go against the girls because when we seen Rob trying to go against
the girls, they formed such a bond even stronger.
We were like, don't even try to track this now.
Let's just give it a few days and we could try to crack that later on.
But once we seen how, yeah, once we seen how powerful they were with that Rob,
we were like, we just got to stay back.
and just hope we don't go to another tribal.
Well, how do you look at this season?
Because as you said, there was a few kind of interesting, unique parts of it
where it's a minority Americans on a seven-person tribe, which is very unique.
Minority men, you are a male American, not to mention you are Tony, a two-time winner.
The only two, one of only two-time winners and the only two-time winners and the only two-time
winner on this season.
So the deck was, I think, a little stacked against you.
Did you look at parts of that or is that the game?
Yeah, that's the game.
I mean, as a good player, you're just a good player.
is to try to navigate through the game.
You try to find cracks.
You've got to try to make different bonds.
You got to try to disrupt the game somehow.
You know, also part of the game is to adapt.
So I had to adapt and just go with the flow
because that's what it didn't, at that moment in the game,
the first days, I had to just sit there
and do whatever the girl said.
I had to because that was the only way for me to survive.
If I tried to start disrupting it, I would have been out, you know?
So everything was going good.
It just, my stars weren't aligned.
And I was looking for the idol for days.
in and out, darkness, daylight, I couldn't find nothing.
Come to see, come to see Kaz found one.
There's a billion, 368 million tree branches in that jungle.
Probably just happened to grab the one that had the key on it.
You know, it's just a lot of luck.
My stars weren't aligned, and I couldn't, I didn't have no luck with that stuff.
Everything I was hoping didn't happen was happening.
It was like, when we had a challenge and we were throwing, the first challenge where we were
throwing the sandbacks to knock down those blocks, the very next day I was like, please don't
let this challenge be anything arm related and what was the challenge holding up serri sandbag for an hour
you know so it was just it was just brutal out there it was just brutal you did amazing at those
challenges i think you really especially that that second immunity challenge i didn't want to go to travel
i didn't want to go to tribal so again on the same page who had you seen like obviously you know
seri in poverty which Australians had you seen which internationals do you know other people out there
Yeah. So the only three people that I did see from Australia Survivor were Luke was the Golden God and King George. And they just happened to be in that tribe. But those are the only three that I seen little tidbits on YouTube, you know? And I was like, oh, wow. Because they're fun. They're fun to watch. You know, they were fun. They make big splashes. And I was like, please, let me get on that. Let's merge so I could play with them. It would be fun to do, you know. So, yeah, I wasn't nervous to go onto the merge with the Aussies. They all seemed like a fun bunch of people. We were all talking smack back.
and forth during the challenges. So they all seem nice. They all seem good. But again, in the back
of my mind, you guys are all here for a reason. You guys were hand-picked, hand-selected to come to
this, you know, to this game to represent your country. So you're not just anybody picked out of
a hat. You're somebody special, you know? Yeah, well, Luke prepared for his first season.
He hadn't seen Survivor just by watching clips of you. And he brought the Spy Shack to
Australia. We've always said that there's a lot of Team TV energy in all of Australian Survivor,
because obviously you won in 2014.
Australian Survivor just started a couple years later.
And we always feel like that Tony energy,
it's true of a lot of the players on this season.
And it's just the DNA of Tony.
The TNA, we call it, is very much in Australian Survivor as a whole.
What do you call it?
TNA, the Tony.
Yeah.
Oh, that's great.
That's awesome.
Yeah, I mean, you've revolutionized the game.
I think probably more than you realize even globally as well.
Oh, man.
That's crazy.
I'd love to ask, you know,
You go into hibernation a little bit, Tony, and then you come back.
You did the traders, which was also unfair, by the way.
I'm still mad about that.
Don't even get me started.
And then you've done this.
Is this, they're more survivor in your future?
They're more reality TV?
Like, what does that landscape look like for you?
Shannon, I go wherever the money is.
You know, they call me up and they say, listen, this is, you know, listen, what's the
price?
So with Australia, it's funny because they said the price was like $2.50.
I was like, nah, I don't want to do that.
I mean, it's a lot of money, you know, but after it's, what is it called?
after you you yeah the conversion right after the conversion to american money it's not that much but
it's still two three years of my salary i could make it in 20 days you know so i was like i don't know
i don't know if i want to you know on a jungle dirty on dirt you know again for a hundred-something
thousand dollars but then when she told me it was the world crown you know you could win the
title of the world i was like oh my god that's what made me want to go out there and do that you know
but yeah if somebody calls me wherever there's money i go to it you know and and and now i know my
my wings are always clipped going into these games you know i mean i can't fly free like i used to
so i go into these games i try my best to bring home as much money as i can but at the same time
i want to give the entertainment value to the fans you know who love watching me i'm never going to be
a dud out there i'm always going to have fun you know yeah 100% i mean do you look back now your wings
were clipped is there anything you look at that you should have done differently that you could
have done i can't find anything personally but is there anything or is it that was just the game
You know, Shannon, you know, like when you watch it on TV, you know, you see a whole different game than you do when you're playing it.
So when I'm playing it, everything I do, everything I don't do is what's needed at that moment for my game.
So if I'm making a move like I did with that sneaker in the tribal council is because I felt that's what I needed to do at that moment, whether it looks like that on TV or not.
When I'm in a shelter nice and quiet and I don't try to make a crack or find a crack or create an opportunity,
or find an opportunity is because I can't, so I don't.
So that's why I really, when I lead these games, I never have any regrets because
it's a totally different game that you see on TV and what's really happening as, as fluid
as that game is, you have to adapt to it quick, you know?
So everything I do out there in my mind, at that moment, is the right move for me to do.
Now, when it doesn't work out, you look like a fool.
When it works out, you look like a genius, you know, and that's the nature of it.
Well, it often works out.
Tony, I want to thank you for everything you've given to Survivor and that you've given to
me as a fan. I don't know where I'd be. Without Kagayan, it helped make me a super fan. And during
2020, when we had the lockdowns and everything was pretty bad, watching you win, winners at war
and dominate every week was a small highlight in an otherwise very bad time. And you've given me
so much joy over 11 years. I know I speak for a lot of fans as well. You are the goat in a good
way. It's a thrill to speak to you today. And thank you so much for coming on to the podcast.
Thank you so much, Shannon. Thank you. It means a lot. I mean, that's that really is very touching, you know. I appreciate it so much. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Shannon. Bye.
