You're listening to the Radcast, a top 25 worldwide business podcast.
If it's radical, we cover it.
Here's your host, Ryan Alford.
Hey guys, what's up?
Welcome to the latest edition of the Radcast.
It's Friday, September 22nd, 2023, our weekly marketing and business news of the week.
My good friend Chris Hansen, what's up, brother?
I can't believe we're already nearing the end of September.
I know.
It's starting to really blow by.
I feel like I was saying it's July 11th.
And now it's September 22nd.
It's almost Halloween, baby.
We had quite the discussion at the Alford House about Halloween costumes this weekend, actually.
How are you doing a family style of costume?
Not normally.
Nicole and I rarely have time to plan it out.
We've done it a couple times where I just wear like some.
stupid but the boys are already in full gear planning it out just talk about robots and
AI and all kinds of stuff it could get interesting the uh don't want you to don't spill the beans
on their costume ideas yet no I'm not going to give away I'm not going to give it away at all
I don't want to give anyway any secrets speaking of AI in our kind of small talk I thought this
was interesting I know you're going to like this Elon Musk his neurolink
product has been approved to recruit humans for brain implant trials.
Elon's brain implant startup, Neurilink has received approval to being its first human trials
targeting people with paralysis for a six-year study using experimental brain computer interface
device. That's four words I'd say daily. Brain computer interface device.
Yes, Neurlink face skepticism.
due to ambitious claims and ethical concerns.
Imagine what those would be.
What could those possibly be putting a chip in your head?
The company is now approved for investigational.
That's a big word.
Device exemption.
Past animal testing allegations led to investigations for multiple departments.
They're now going to be able to go out there.
But look, if it can cure ALS.
It's a lot going on.
going on, but if it can help with ALS and paralysis, all for it, but it just starts to teeter real
fast into scary world. It's interesting because he's the one, he's one of the AI kings right now,
right? Oh, yeah. And he's one that is openly discussed. We need to put safeholds in place because
this can get out of hand, where I'm like, and they always do this, right? It's we can help paralyze people
and ALS, and I'm all down for that.
But if you get one bad actor, start messing with the brain implant,
I see a lot of negatives that can come from this too.
You know what I'm saying?
Yeah.
It's a little scary.
Taking control of your brain and telling you what to do.
Yeah, dude, don't even talk.
I would love to see someone that's paraplegic, be able to walk again.
That would be amazing.
But where's the thing?
What was cut off?
It reminds me of, you ever watched any of the Marvel movies?
Yeah.
Captain America, Winter Soldier, the guy that's taken it, the Russians put something in his head
and they can activate him as essentially an assassin at any time.
Yeah.
I think it's like the same thing.
I don't really want to get activated to be an assassin personally.
That reminds me of the Bourne series, like Jason Bourne, where he didn't have an implant.
They just drainwash his ass and they could activate it.
So I guess, I don't know, man, just anything hooked up to an internet connection literally in your body can be hacked.
Yes.
That's the part that gets scary.
It's hard to know where you draw the line.
Like all this stuff.
When do you start playing God?
I think we're teetering close.
I think that's when God's going to send an asteroid to hit the planet.
It's probably going to happen at some point.
That or another flood.
Yeah, exactly.
Get your harks ready.
Hey, I'm going to heed that advice.
You're ready, bro.
You know how people laughed in the Bible about, oh, there's no flood going.
I'm building a fucking arc if they tell us it's coming.
You already got a step ahead.
You got the houseboat.
Yes, that thing will float.
But keep your eyes out.
Keep your brain out on the look for neuralink news.
Because the implications are endless.
Like you can upload all kinds of memories.
They got everything you could do.
like just reprogramming the brain completely is insurance going to cover this because i hate to say it
but our medical system is a for-profit system this is going to if we're really healing people on
this level you're affecting a lot of medical establishment business too yes like the physical
therapy world and medication world i wonder if i'll be able to if i put this in my wife's brain
And if I did something really stupid the day before,
could I just delete that memory?
We woke up, we're always happy.
We didn't fight the night before.
We don't fight often.
Brian didn't actually do that.
Look into this.
Yeah.
He didn't say the right thing when I tried that dress on.
Okay, we just delete that one.
Yeah, yeah.
Delete that memory.
We're going to start over.
Exactly.
That's joking aside.
Those are like the implications you start to think about.
We can just implant every brand we want.
want them to love without even having to show them an ad.
Oh, dude, yeah.
Oh, in lighter news, the most socially viewed video of 2023 happened last week.
I bet you know this because it's in our show notes, but you probably wouldn't know it if you were trying to guess.
It goes to show a couple things.
It shows the popularity of two things.
It's the rock.
Dwayne Johnson, also known as James.
Dwayne Johnson. He doesn't really call himself the Rock anymore. It's just Dwayne Johnson.
But he's got to be the Rock if he's going back to WWE.
He was on Smackdown. His return to wrestling was viewed 103 million times.
The most socially viewed video of 2023.
The Rock's getting 103 billion. Just for the record, I had a dentist in Greenville get 10 million views on Facebook.
So eat your heart out on that. It was a nobody.
We were the most socially viewed video in 2018.
that wasn't a celebrity.
Just for a little fun fact.
But the Rock appeared on Smackdown,
and it was the most socially viewed video of the year.
He made his first WWA appearance in four years.
He was on there with the guy we talked about last week.
Pat McAfee, Pat McAfee is everywhere,
delivering his signature, the people's elbow.
Play great entertainment wrestling.
It's fake.
And it's still this point.
popular.
I don't buy it.
I think there's some algorithm plays going on here.
You doubt the WW's buying views.
Yeah, man.
Dude, people love that wrestling shit.
I'm telling you, man.
It's still.
You're right.
They think it's real and they love it.
It's a man's soap opera.
Yeah, it is.
It was never my thing, but I had a lot of my buddies growing up were when I was a kid.
I would watch it.
I just never, I knew it was fake.
Is your teaming?
I watched it.
My parents yelled at me and said I couldn't watch it.
And I'd sneak and watch it in my room or something.
And my dad go,
why are you watching that garbage, son?
I'm like, because it's garbage.
Yeah.
It was Rick Flair and the Four Horseman then.
He is a world superstar.
Yes.
Could be possible.
But the Rock is pretty popular.
I don't quite agree with everything from a political side with him
and now he's gotten a little
Hollywoodish for my taste.
But I respect the hell out of his transition
from athlete to superstar actor
to everything else.
He's slept in, I don't know how many different brands.
And now he's the most viewed social video of the year.
So if you haven't seen it
and you're really into wrestling in the rock,
go check it out.
comes to us from bleacher report.com.
This hit my radar quite a bit over the weekend because I was watching football,
and it was not exactly for this reason that's in the article.
It was more about Travis Kelsey and Taylor Swift dating,
who's a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs.
That would be a match made in heaven.
That would be like a super, I don't know,
they'd be like a super singer or a super athlete or something.
That just seems like good DNA getting together.
But nonetheless, Taylor Swift is partnering with Google for a vault song reveal,
but it seems there's a glitch.
She launched a virtual Easter egg hunt
to reveal her new
1989 track titles,
which was followed by technical difficulties
and an eventual spike
in Google Twin searches for her names due to the air.
Sometimes I think they fucked these things up on purpose.
It's like more buzz.
That was the first thing that came to my head.
Yeah.
Oh, it messed up.
More chaos and more height.
Agitation creates engagement.
And when you,
You have Swifties, isn't that what they're called?
Swifties?
Yes, Swifties.
Got it right.
Hey, when Swifties get upset, they take action.
And action leads to views.
They let the world know.
They tell Twitter and get those Twitter fingers going.
Yes.
Are you a Taylor Swift fan?
No, I, don't get me wrong when she first came out.
She's got hits.
She has hits.
Yeah.
But I also, but just like, when you're just, like,
You're that big.
And I hate to say it, bro, but even when you're talking about this guy, she's dating, I'm like, there's another breakup song coming out of this one.
Yeah, because like we talked about last week, the celebrities can't stay together.
Why has nobody locked you down yet is my question?
Yeah, exactly.
She's attractive.
She can sing.
She's Taylor Swift and she can't lock down the guy.
What the fuck's the problem?
I don't know.
Now that I'm more mature, I'm like, I just see a lot of red flags.
Yeah.
I do like her new album, though.
It's a little, got some jams on.
She makes hits, man.
She does.
She makes it.
And I like the remix is better.
Her master is getting sold without her permission or whatever that whole deal was.
Like I will give her credit.
Because from my understanding, she does write a lot of her own stuff and has done a lot of her own.
No, she's a true musician.
Like, I respect the hell out of her on some levels.
Like the musician level.
Yeah.
Like getting where she is.
If she was more independent, now I feel like it's become so theatrical.
and cult-like.
But that's, the irony is she plays that I'm the independent woman and I'm doing all this thing.
And she's clearly self-made and done this.
No one's taking that away.
But then the irony of that positioning is what you just said is the Swifties that just are protecting her at all costs.
And I don't know, trolling everything.
I had a friend go to the recent concert and he called me after he went with his wife.
and he's dude, it's a little funky, like how emotionally involved.
And this could apply to any celebrity for that matter.
Oh, yeah.
People literally, like you said, will kill for these people.
Yeah.
Or spend their last dollar going to see their show.
Yes.
She's one of the, I don't know that there's 10 of these stars on the planet anymore.
There's not as many as there used to be.
She's one of them that has this emotional.
Right.
Right.
Obviously, her songs are catchy, but then this, I don't know, attachment.
It's like the rock.
It's like his level, him, Beyonce, her.
You're right.
There's a very select group, maybe Ronaldo.
Yeah.
And there's some of these just megastars that have this kind of pull on them emotionally.
And with the pocketbook, like you said, spending their last dollar on it.
And so I think if as a marketer and even as I think like Hollywood types.
If you knew how to bottle this up and recreate it, people would do it.
It's what generates, obviously it's where talent and looks and ability and persona
like magically formulate to what this is,
but you can't quite put your finger on what makes it so magnetic.
Right.
And I guess it's just those things.
And maybe there's just such so few people that have all of that together.
Yeah, X factor.
It's the X-Factor.
Taylor Swift, go look for that song reveal if it's not glitching still.
Next year, coming from Marca, M-A-R-C-A-com.
AI robots infiltrated an NFL game with a secret mission.
Welcome to the future.
Robots were seen among the spectators at the week one NFL game between the Chargers and the Dolphins
promoting the upcoming film The Creator.
These robots representing characters from the movie
were situated in various locations around the stadium.
This is a pretty smart activation for this movie.
I've seen the previews for it.
It looks pretty fucking good.
I want to watch it.
This kind of scares me a little bit.
But the creator is set to release on September 29th
and explores a conflict between humans and AI.
Who could possibly see that coming?
Like maybe a bunch of people with neuralinks that get hacked
and all of a sudden.
Yeah.
fucking killing us.
Or these robots that we've made too smart?
Think that we make no logical sense
because humans don't a lot of times.
Dude.
You can see what we're,
this is all going.
Do you feel it?
But no one wants to get the way of stopping it.
If we're looking,
this is a glimpse into the future,
if you ask me.
Terminator, right?
Exactly.
Do we not learn anything from that work of nonfiction?
Literally.
That's why I'm like, all right, like Elon is super smart,
but maybe we need to like reel it in a little bit.
Yeah.
They had these robots that were characters for the movie,
just sitting in the stadium like regular fans.
I think it's a really smart activation.
Yeah, I saw this one viral.
I feel like I saw a bunch of clips on this all over Instagram the last week or two.
Yeah.
It would have been even cooler if they hadn't asked permission.
they just bought regular tickets.
I'm assuming they had permission and did all this.
Dude, that would have been some guerrilla.
Yeah, some guerrilla shit right there.
That's a way to do.
If you got to, here's borrow, take stealing an idea.
If you're like, something like that you're not going to,
obviously if you're holding up signs or doing something that would be signage,
if it's permanent.
But what keeps you from paying 20 or 30 people affordably?
Okay.
Cost you whatever that is, $100 a person.
Okay.
cost you $2,000 to get them to wear
you're an independent movie maker
or you're a small brand.
We should do this for vacay.
We should get like 20 people to wear vacay t-shirts
to a big sporting event
and just have a to where you couldn't miss it.
Obviously, we're not going to have 400 people there.
But what's the numbers of 20 or 30 people
and have them wearing your brand?
You can't stop someone from, you can't stop that.
So if we just bought tickets for someone
and they wore our shirt,
they might get on TV.
They likely would because someone would spot if there's 30 people the same shirt on.
Start walking by.
What's that?
It's a pretty good guerrilla idea.
Get some vacay jerseys made, like some NFL jersey.
Exactly.
Vacay.
And it'd be like, what are all these vacay jerseys that keep seeing?
See?
All right.
There's a see.
We're giving ideas that we need to steal ourselves, Chris.
But if you're out there listening, these are ways you think of guerrilla marketing ideas, stuff like this.
You steal from the ideas of the agencies and the movies that have been.
billion dollar budgets.
It's not even steel.
You just borrow a good idea.
Most ideas are borrowed and then made better.
It's a fact.
The internet's interest in PR relationships has turned into an obsession, Chris.
This comes up to us.
Tell me more, Ryan.
Yes.
This comes from mashable.com.
Relationships perceived as inauthentic by fans face accusations of being merely for
PR.
celebrity relationships typically begin with tabloid rumors followed by an insider confirmation and some casual paparazzi photos.
But then if you want to know that it really gone to the next level, it's a public event together.
There's like a sequence if there's a relationship for celebrities.
And the viewing public is starting to get aware of these things and view them as inauthentic.
Yeah, totally.
I'm like, did you really not.
You and I have been hit up from a PR agency to get us into a magazine or
Oh, yeah.
GQ or Forbes, right?
Exactly.
We'll get you in there.
And it's, but I will say paid.
It's just obvious now.
But it's also obvious when maybe two B-list celebrities that seemingly have nothing in.
You're like, you can't even quite see them together.
And then these rumors start swirling and you're like,
is they really together?
Is this just to drum up lots of articles?
And I think that's what they say.
Like people start to read between the lines.
Because there is this exact sequence.
Oh, we saw Leonardo.
I guess he's A-list, but whatever.
You get the point.
Brad Pitt was out with Jennifer Anderson and this was 25 years ago,
really ageing myself.
And then it was the photos that are blurry of them in a taxi.
And then a month later, they're at the award ceremony to get, oh, they're official.
They're at the award ceremony.
The public isn't buying that shit anymore, Chris.
No.
I thought the prime example I thought of was like that S&L guy Pete Davidson, I think, and Kim Kardashian.
I was like, fuck is this.
Yeah.
And who knows, maybe it's real, but also at this point, it's like, who cares?
Who gives a shit?
No.
But they're just trying to borrow it.
They're borrowing interest from one another to generate attention from the press.
And then it creates this story.
Because inevitably, if you really pay attention, one of them has a book or a movie coming out.
Right.
It just happens to be.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The timing.
Or a new makeup line or something.
And look, some of it's real.
But I don't know, man.
It just seems like a bottle, like a.
a total manufacturer job.
Like two publicists said,
I really think it'd be great if Tom and Lucy got together.
I think it really bumped their press.
Do you think they could do that?
Maybe go have coffee a couple times?
We could make this happen.
We'll call the paparazzi.
They'll be waiting outside the coffee shop.
Yes.
Shaquille O'Neill talks investing in ed tech and startups that are going to change people's lives.
This comes for us from TechCrunch.
Shack.
It was a bunch of pizza places if you didn't know that.
Once a Papa John's.
Shack discusses his passion for investing at Tech Crunch Disrupt,
citing the importance of education, literacy, and driving positive change,
and shared successes, such as being a lead investor in Ed Soma,
an AI platform for reading.
Ed Soma.
I sit down on paper, and I was tripping over it mentally.
You like, Shaq?
I got, I don't have anything bad to say.
I just, I don't know, man.
I just feel like if you're that big, you're that famous, like, you're compromised somewhere.
I hate to say it.
But when I was a kid, a huge Jack fan when he was on the Orlando Magic, definitely.
And I, yeah.
Even now, he's one of these guys.
I almost look at, like Mike Tyson, like these dudes have been around a long time.
And now they're in their more wise years.
So I do think he spits some good game and some, even business-wise,
like he's got some good stuff he shares on some of these podcasts.
So.
Yeah, he's translated his experience into some wisdom.
He's one of the few athletes that kept building, right?
Yeah.
He's kept the momentum outside of sports.
So I respect that for sure.
Yeah.
He's so soft spoken like when he talks on TV a little bit that you,
if you don't really listen, you dismiss it because you're like, okay, this is a big
Shaquille Neal playing basketball or whatever.
But if you really pay attention, dude's pretty fucking smart.
Fucking funny, too.
Yeah, he's both.
He's got some good humor.
Yeah.
So he's, but he's talking about investing.
He does seem to have a hand in a million things.
Like I'm starting to see him everywhere.
I've been on podcasts, obviously, lately.
He's on the NBA shows.
And then I have seen him.
popping up at some of these like tech and investing stuff.
Cameron, he needs to be on the short list for the radcast.
Shaq O'Neill.
He's getting in business.
Seems like a good fit.
We can talk about Ed Soma, his AI-powered platform for reading.
Free OLA has enrolled Megan Three Stallion at Flaming Hot University.
Who knew?
I didn't know it was a school.
They got that shit everywhere.
Flaming Hot, every time I go to the store, it's on something else.
like looking at bread. It's like flaming hot bread, flaming hot cookies, flaming hot mountain
dew. Take what they've taken that brand. But okay, Frida Land is teaming. It's not good for us.
No, it's so hot. It like, it turns your stomach inside out, I think. I do the flavor. I'll eat it.
There was a study that came out recently, like literally about all, too many kids eating these hot
snacks, like whether there's Doritos or these and that it's literally like ruining their stomach
declining. Like we're creating like long-term health effects from these products.
It's look, my I have middle schoolers. It's creed. They're like, oh, I'm eating my tachies today.
Like it is like true getting credit in middle school.
Oh, it's a flex. If you're eating that bag of tachies and not blinking with no drink.
Are you kidding me? The feats of strength. The feats of heat. Hey, feats of heat.
That could, that's a, that should be a campaign for them. Flaming hot feats of heat.
Fredo Lay is teaming up with Megan Three Stallion to promote its flaming hot flavor.
Megan Lee Stallion.
Yes.
I'm going to correct you so you're fucking watchers don't make fun of you.
Megan the style.
Yeah, dude.
Sorry, I'm added an R.
It's all this flavor hot, flaming.
Three, the stallion.
Sorry.
That's Re Stallion better.
Like that way, she's got three horses.
Through a humorous online video, short horses and limited edition merch collection.
with proceeds benefiting the Pete and Thomas Foundation
and a scholarship fund at Texas University.
I like her.
She's a Texas girl.
She just had a soft spot for that.
Megan the Estallion.
I just want to go to Flaming Hot University.
Might be too hot for me, bro.
It might.
Is this like hot or not?
Remember that?
That was the app before.
What is it now?
You guys, you youngans with single,
like Chris, you know all the apps.
Swipe left or right.
What's the number one?
Throw me a bone here.
What's the name of the app?
Tinder?
Yeah, thank you.
Bumble, hens.
Yes.
Farmers only.
That's your favorite.
Yeah, bro.
You put that cowboy hat.
It got on there and it just, it all went.
I need some acreage from my barn dominium.
Those things are so popular.
Yeah.
Barn dominium.
dumbest name ever.
I really like this Flaming Hot University, though.
I want it to be in a real place.
And like to go there,
I feel like they have to have some kind of R&D lab going on.
But I'm no shitting.
Have you paid attention to the grocery store?
How many things have this stuff in it?
A lot, bro.
Yeah, 100%.
Even like drinks.
It's in mac and cheese.
It's in drinks.
It's in sweet things, too.
Like, they're mixing it.
I'm like, they've got some crazy.
Yeah.
I've seen it.
a lot of the Mexican candy would have
with that like spicy chili
like seasoning on it.
And I'm like,
what is like, Clamate?
Yeah, Clamate.
The rim of the coronas
and stuff. Oh yeah, beer and tomato juice.
I call it a red eye. That's what I have when I go
to Mexico. Those are delicious.
It's got a little hot sauce in it.
But I will say this, back to the
Flaming Hot. Let me give it a little marketing.
It's called brand extension.
This is what, when you have a brand,
and you have a product that has the ability to extend beyond the product that it's in.
And you want to gain more awareness, more reach, and extend beyond the brand that you're in.
You do these kind of licensing deals.
And that's what Free to Lay is done.
And that's, I don't know who owns the original.
I imagine it's free to license them on the Flaming Hot that owns the license for Flaming Hot.
It's trademarked.
And now they're in products that aren't free to allay.
products, obviously, Mountain Dew, other things. And this is how you get, again, borrowed leverage,
borrowed interest, increased leverage from other brands. And it's a natural brand extension play.
And for example, for us, if we did a vacay thing where it was powered by vacay or something with
someone else or another brand or tennis shoe company, something like that, it is a forever long
marketing tactic that works.
And it's working because I see that flaming hot stuff everywhere.
Yeah.
So go check it out.
You might get into the university if you apply.
Pringles just unveiled a $140-dollar co-lab with Caviar Co.
Caviar and Pringles.
Two things I naturally thought would always go together.
Here's what's inside the limited edition kit.
They announced a partnership with the caviar company inspired by a TikTok trend
that garnered over 10 billion a billion views,
which involves topping the chips with high-end caviar.
The limited edition Pringles and Caviar collaboration offers three product options priced at $49, 110, and $140.
And they are available as of this week.
It comes for us from CNBC.com.
You like caviar?
I'm fine with it.
It's not.
I would never do this.
No.
Not at all.
Nothing screams class like Pringles and Caviar.
Yes.
It's like a salted cracker, right?
It's right.
It might be on to something.
Maybe I love it more.
Yeah, I think I would like it with Anna Pringles, though.
Because I like Pringles.
Yeah, like a nice ranch Pringles or like cheddar with some caviar.
It'd be like nice.
Caviar is just salty, I feel.
It's just some extra salt.
Exactly. It makes it saltier.
So get some pizza pringles with some caviar.
They do have some flaming hot pringles too.
Bring that full circle.
Oh, man.
So the Pringles and Caviar Company, this 10 billion views.
Like when I read these things, Chris, that are like, okay, 10 billion views.
I'm not saying they're fake views, but I'm like really 10 billion.
Really?
That's so many people, dude.
The United States is, what, 380 million?
Yeah.
Fucking 10 billion.
Is it really that interesting or I don't know.
Sorry, have you seen this?
Honestly, maybe in the room.
These other countries.
Okay.
They probably think we're idiots.
Like these other countries are like.
China is the one that's introduced in,
they don't allow TikTok in their country,
but they force it on ours.
Because they know it's like some of this mindless shit.
Go figure.
But it's a good, it sounds like it's a good collab for Pringles and Caviar.
You never know.
Anything could improve caviar, at least the flavor, because it's just salt.
Like you said, it's salty.
And I could see people just doing this like as one of these viral trends.
Like everyone just goes to grocery stores like, oh, let's do this and record it.
Maybe that happened.
Yeah.
Yeah, I think it's like the flex.
Okay.
I'm flexing except on caviar.
And then I'm putting go to Pringle.
Ha ha.
Like, it's that double thing.
I'm flexing with a caviar, but I'm so cool because I put it on a prangle.
Like I'm like, I don't want to look too hoity tooty with caviar.
So I'm going to put it on a pringle.
So I'll get my, my cred back.
I've uncovered the secret to this collab and trend.
That is a thing.
It is a thing.
That's all of the news for the week.

Next week you're going to be talking about like somebody over-eating and dying from eating too much pancakes or something.
But I'll tell you what, there's few things that are as good in the morning, either a waffle or pancake with like butter and syrup on it.
You kidding me?
Like maple syrup, real syrup?
Not that fake shit.
Don't give me that log cabin stuff that says syrup.
It has a disclaimer under it.
I need the stuff that gets popped out of the tree.
Yeah, baby.
I want that shit drained right out of the tree trunk.
Exactly.
High grade maple.
High grade maple.
Yes, September 26th.
No, give me that fruit toast corn syrup shit.
Yeah, I don't want to need that.
I need the real stuff.
Straight to the vein.
Yeah.
That's right.
