Starting point is 00:00:00 I heard that someone is climbing the charts on the podcast recently. Yes, yes, yes. Hey, that's a clap out to all our listeners. Here's what you do. No matter what you sell, set up an e-commerce store. The reason we have this ferocious desire for content is because there are so many of these platforms. Yeah. And so they all feed one another.
Starting point is 00:00:21 You're listening to the radcast. If it's radical, we cover it. Here's your host, Ryan Alford. Hey guys, what's up? Welcome to the latest edition of the RAD, Radcast. I love that part. You like that part, Joey? My headphones are very loud right now.
Starting point is 00:00:44 So, yes, I love it a lot. You love it. I feel like I'm in a Metallica concert right now, dude. Today's Friday, October 1st, 2021. And we're getting radical here, folks. I'm joined by Joey Thompson. Yeah. Officially what's up?
Starting point is 00:00:57 I kind of caught you like, I was like sometimes admiring my rad rad rad cast because, you know, I'm easily entertained. Yeah. But, you know, sure. It's like repetitive. How many times can you say rad in one thing? It's like a branding thing. Have you ever done a counter on a video to find out how many times you should, dude?
Starting point is 00:01:13 Say radical, radical, rad, rad, rad, rad, rad, rad. Just keep it out. Nick, dude, edit in some, every time he says rad, dude, give him a point or deduct. I don't know if it's like golf, deduct a point. Yeah, we're getting early with the praise here. What's up, man? You doing well? I'm doing just fine.
Starting point is 00:01:30 I'm feeling good. Dressed to the nines. just like you and having a good time. It's about, it's October. Yeah, it is October. October 1st. Heck yeah. I know.
Starting point is 00:01:41 I'm excited, man. It's 90 degrees in South Carolina, but it's October 1st. Absolutely. I was sweating through my haunted house makeup last night. Oh, haunted house makeup. That's my side gig. I didn't want to bring it up.
Starting point is 00:01:53 Are you doing like Mad World or something? I don't know if I'm contractually allowed to tell you what character I play. Okay. It's like one of those things. Is it at Mad World or can you say? It might be at a haunted house somewhere. somewhere, one of the more popular ones? It's not a Mad World.
Starting point is 00:02:06 I constructed my own in a garage somewhere. Anyway. More on that, never. Okay, dude. Again, my contract is very binding at this haunted house. Okay. I can't. They take this stuff serious at these haunted houses.
Starting point is 00:02:20 I'll tell you what. And they spend some money on the market. I know they're making some dough. Oh, for sure. Yeah. People like to get scared. Absolutely. They're like,
Starting point is 00:02:30 just like that, dude. Paying to get terrified. Do you like haunted houses? No, not at all. I kind of, not even like a little bit. And I like scary movies. It's not like I'm,
Starting point is 00:02:41 you know, a pussy or something. But like, I'm like, but I, but I just don't like, I don't, no one needs to like touch me and like,
Starting point is 00:02:49 you know, I don't mind being scared, but even like, I don't know. I can watch it on TV and like, oh, it's a good scare.
Starting point is 00:02:56 That was cool. Yeah. But I just going to the haunted house. Nah, I'm out. I'm out on. that dog. I learned as a kid to laugh when they come out to like, because, you know, the whole time
Starting point is 00:03:08 you're like, if you walk through like that, you're just going to be like, oh, all the time. So like when people, if you, ah, and start laughing, it's a little more enjoyable. Yeah. You're probably like a scary clown or something. You know, that seems to be all the haunted houses are now is like the haunted clowns that have broken out of the mental institute. Is it every haunted house now that? The zombie clowns.
Starting point is 00:03:33 Okay, zombie clowns. No, no, I think you're right. Clowns in general? Clowns are scary, though. Clowns, even like entertainer clowns? No, dude. They're bad, dude. Not rad, dude.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Not rad. They're definitely a fad. No, but they're... I don't know. It's like, maybe it did it to me. I don't know, but like... I think I always thought they were creepy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:56 So, who knows? Halloween's coming up, though. It is October. 31st. It is. Same place, same time, every year. And, you know, all the scary movies start
Starting point is 00:04:07 coming out. That's your favorite clip that we play. Yes. You go into this zone. I don't know if I scare you or annoy you. Hey, real quick, I need to go grab something out of the utensil drawer that you have out there. I'll be back three hours.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Oh, man. Hey, hey, we have a good week. We get radical. We've hired six new people. That's great. We're growing. That's good new hires. He's the favorite of the so far.
Starting point is 00:04:34 Oh. Can you say? Cindy in accounting is not my favorite because she's telling me that we spend too much money. Okay. Cindy, stop. You know what I mean? This is your morning. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:47 And everybody's like, why don't you have more accounting people? Well, I don't really want them telling us how to spend money. Okay. Like, yeah. It's probably not the best business move, but so far it's worked out. Sure. But no, they're all good. Really good. We've got some good senior leadership coming in. Radical 2.0 is in effect. 2.0. Yeah. 2.0. Okay. No points. Just dots. Yeah. And so I'm excited, man. We got a lot of new business coming in the door. Sure. So that's good. Lots of, lots of good stuff. Hey, oh, okay. Hey, clap it up.
Starting point is 00:05:24 Clap it up. Kang. Yes. So yeah, I'm excited. We got a lot. going on at the agency and the podcast is doing well and taking off and hopefully we don't screw that up today. Well, you brought in the wrong guy, dude. Just when you were going up, I'm here to take it back down. Yes, yes, yes. And Bobby Maximus was on the show this week. One of...
Starting point is 00:05:48 Okay, tell me about, first of... Bobby Maximus, is that his legal name? Let me... I got a good story. And Bobby's cool. Robert Maximus. But he says... sent we asked the request he's one of
Starting point is 00:06:01 the top 20 fittest men in the country adult film performer yeah he wears lots of hats he wears lots of hats but in all seriousness he sent we had reached out to his publicist or whatever I mean he's like
Starting point is 00:06:21 he writes for men's health magazine he's on like top 20 fittest people in the world and he he wrote back Bobby fucking Maximus would love to join the show and I'm like all right
Starting point is 00:06:36 I like this guy he's an adult film performer whether you know or not dude you're talking about what kind of hats does he wear probably Trojan and Durex that hats he wears oh god hopefully
Starting point is 00:06:45 no but he's he was cool man very motivational and he kind of you know very business savvy he's a good writer he writes for men's health and a bunch of other fitness journals and things like that
Starting point is 00:06:58 but very real and very hip with the marketing's. Yeah. And what, so wait, that was his, his manager that wrote that back?
Starting point is 00:07:10 No, he did. That's like what he puts on, like his wife's like, would you like some dinner? He's like, Bobby fucking Max, this was dinner,
Starting point is 00:07:18 dude. He's serious about it. He was serious. He was intense, but he was intense, but he wasn't, it was so funny because like when he wrote that,
Starting point is 00:07:27 I'm like, oh, What are we getting into here? Yeah. And then he came on and he was like the most laid back down the earth guy. It's a bait and switch, dude. Baton switch. But he was good.
Starting point is 00:07:36 He was good. And Tyler Rich joins the show on Tuesday. He's already joined. We've already recorded it. And, you know, you talk about the luck of the Irish. His song just hit number one on the weekend countdown of Sirius XM. Yeah. It's a big deal.
Starting point is 00:07:55 It's a big deal. Tyler is rich, dude. Tyler is rich now. Better than you're used to is the song. It's a good song. And Tyler was really cool. Like, you know, some of these guys you don't ever know, like, oh, country artists.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Well, you know, what are they going to be like? This guy's like super down to earth, super cool. And like, very transparent, like, about the country music business. Like, I asked him, like, some stuff. I thought maybe, like, with his record label, he would do you a dance or whatever? 100% transparent about, like, the realities of the business. Fuck him, man. That's enough.
Starting point is 00:08:26 Was it shady? Like not difficult? No. No, just the reality of like, you know, if you don't sign with a record label, you're not getting on the radio. If you're not on the radio, you're only going to be so big. Because though the radio has changed in all these genres very much with freaking apps and music and, you know, streaming and all that stuff. Yeah. Country music radio, however, is still alive and well on the old radio dial. And so country music folks still listening to the real radio.
Starting point is 00:08:56 Sure. it's just the realities of what it takes to kind of get that awareness. Though he talked about self-publishing, you know, a lot of these guys, and we had coffee Anderson on last month, who was on Netflix, and still he did sign a record label here recently, but hadn't had done it for 10 plus years independently and does very, very well. Sure. Very well.
Starting point is 00:09:20 And never had record label, never was on country music radio. But to take that next step. even he recognized that he got a pretty sweet deal. I think as far as sharing, you know, assets and things like that. So he didn't have to give away his whole brand. Like some of these guys early on have to kind of sign deals that may not, you know, be wonderful long term, but it's kind of like just what you have to do in the business. Sounds like, dude, you're about to punch your ticket in Nashville, dude.
Starting point is 00:09:48 You got all these guys giving you industry. Hey, I'm getting, we're getting ready. You see how you see the method to the madness. Sure, man. We get to know about all these industries, and then you never know who they're going to introduce us to. If you're in Nashville, hit up Ryan Alfred. Yes, in Nashville. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:06 Yeah. So we do have some social holidays. Sure. As we always like to talk about on our weekly marketing advertising news. I'm ready, dude. What are they? You know, some of the ridiculousness of them. Some of them are serious.
Starting point is 00:10:20 And yesterday, I think we usually don't go backwards. We're going to go backwards because yesterday was International Podcast Day. Okay. Pretty relevant. Absolutely relevant. I heard that someone is climbing the charts on the podcast recently. Yes, yes, yes. Hey, that's a clap out to all our listeners.
Starting point is 00:10:39 And hopefully they keep listening and growing. Because top 25 on Spotify, business, top 100 on marketing on Apple. So climbing the charts. We are number three in South Korea business. Okay. I have no idea. Why? Number three in South Korea in business. Sure. As long as it's not North Korea.
Starting point is 00:11:01 You're going to be good, man. Hey, I don't, yeah. Well, you're going to get Dennis Rodman and Kim Jong-un inviting you to to Radcast alive from North Korea. We get these charts like from places and like they're like all over the map. We're like top 100 in like seven countries. But the one that caught my eye was number three in South Korea. So everyone out there in South Korea. I don't know anyone in South Korea.
Starting point is 00:11:24 But we appreciate. you listening. We do. All the listeners in Seoul? Yeah. Seoul Korea. Congratulations. Yeah, that's cool. Hey, it all started going up, but I told I think Joe or Sean this,
Starting point is 00:11:39 I was like, you know, when y'all came on the show, the numbers just started popping. Okay, that's great to hear. Unless those numbers start coming from North Korea after today, all right? They might. I'll drop it. Keyword listening. We don't care where you're from. Just listen, all right? Yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Today, you know what today is? It's the International Day of Older Persons. Okay. Okay, Boomer. Damn, damn it on all that. It's like Senior Citizens. What's the difference between that and Senior Citizens Day? Is it just older people, older persons?
Starting point is 00:12:12 Older persons day. Does that mean like it's for me, like, depending on if you're in the room and you're the oldest person in the room? Yeah, hold on now. That's very like debatable what an older person is. Yeah, I think what you just said. Like to my kid, like, you know, his brothers are older. And I'm grandpa. Sure, yes.
Starting point is 00:12:29 It's about five-year-old. You know what insult I hate is when, I mean, it's funny, but when people call somebody old, because that's like, you have no control over that. When someone's like, dude, you're old. And it's like, sure. The fragility of time has taken over my body at some point. Yeah, when you stop time, let me know.
Starting point is 00:12:47 I'll get on with that. You're old. It's like, okay. Yeah, I guess. So I don't know what, the difference. or what that means, but today is the International Day of Older Persons. And it's also another day. Oh.
Starting point is 00:13:02 And I'm not aware of this one, but if you are in this, call it genre, you probably very aware of it. Fetish? In this fetish? This fetish, I would consider it a fetish. World Vegetarian Day. Okay. Have a lot of fetish with produce.
Starting point is 00:13:21 There's a store in town called Green Fetish, though, right? Yes. is. And it is vegetarian being? Yeah. Okay. All right. That can accidentally work out. They should be sold. I guarantee you if we pulled out social media, there's something on their their book, their Facebook or whatever, on
Starting point is 00:13:37 World Vegetarian Day. I hope so. I like how you said pulled out social media, like it was like a dictionary or something. You had to go, smartphone, you pull it out, you know. What do you, yeah. So World Vegetarian, I'm, I'm, I'm a meatitarian. Okay. You all eat me.
Starting point is 00:13:55 Only red meat. Only red meat. Uncooked red meat. Uncooked red meat and lots of protein. That's why you're so jacked, bro. Hey, dude. You got to keep it going. But in all seriousness, I can never be a vegetarian.
Starting point is 00:14:11 Dude. I'll get guac bowl. I'll get veggie bowls from Chipotle sometimes. I'm not going to fun. I don't mind a good salad. I like a good salad. Okay. But not your main.
Starting point is 00:14:21 With a big 10 ounce rib eye on top of it. He's all about gains, dude. He's not trying to get cut, man. He's trying to get swole. Just swall versus cut is a whole other dark section. There's no cutting around here. Just adding. No, but World Vegetarian Day.
Starting point is 00:14:38 Happy World Vegetarian Day. I have some friends that are vegetarians and God help them. It's a great fetish to have. It is. It is. Oh, gosh. I can't drop it. It's also, there's three.
Starting point is 00:14:51 That's why all these are bullshit. There's a third day today. that's international coffee day. Oh, hell yeah. That's a little more universal. Hell, as I drink my Alani New energy drink. Okay.
Starting point is 00:15:03 I don't drink coffee. Sponsor them. I should say I will drink it occasionally, but not regularly. Everybody's going, oh my God, how do you not drink coffee? Here's what I would say. Coffee is, I became one of those people older in life where it's like, don't talk to me until I had my coffee. But like, it definitely works so much so that I don't partake in hard drugs.
Starting point is 00:15:23 But if you. you drank three cold brews in two hours, I don't even know why you would pay for Coke, honestly, at that, because, like, like,
Starting point is 00:15:34 I could scale a building if I did that. You know what I mean? It's, coffee's dangerous. I could, you know, like, I'm so desensitized,
Starting point is 00:15:41 the caffeine. I think, I could drink seven monsters and, and honestly, probably take a nap. It's not good. I got to desensitize. Like,
Starting point is 00:15:51 I just, I'm not feeling it's enough. It gives me a little perk, but, like, it really, I drink too much caffeine probably. Heck yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:59 Seven energy drinks a day. Is that true? No. But like two. What is the most of you? I probably had four or five in a day before. And you know what? I didn't feel.
Starting point is 00:16:08 I just felt weird. It's like weird to the normal. I had three cold brews one time and I saw the face of God. I did. I don't know if that's a yes or a thankful. I don't know. I love God, but I don't want to see them when I'm drinking energy drinks. I fell close to death, is what I'm telling you.
Starting point is 00:16:32 My heart rate was, I was doing cardio at all hours of the day at that point. Yeah. According to my heart, I was. Oh, yeah, like beating through your chest? Yes. See, caffeine does not. It might raise it, I'm sure, like, well, no, if technically, no matter how used to it, you are, you are raising your heart rate.
Starting point is 00:16:51 Okay, well, I don't think it does. I'm like literally my pulse still exactly the same. My resting heart rate like 44. Brag. Massive brags. But like so I'll have one energy drink. It might be 48. You know,
Starting point is 00:17:03 like it doesn't go up to like 80 or something. Sure. I, again, I've had a near-death experience from coffee. So. Just coffee? Just the,
Starting point is 00:17:15 I wonder if you took something else that mixed with it. I can't promise the barista didn't spike it. You know what I mean? You got to watch out for your. little barista. Some Sudafed in it or something. They watch, they are monitoring the tip jar at all time. So if you don't tip them, suit of fed might be going there.
Starting point is 00:17:33 Barista. Shout out to my caffeine. Tomorrow is name your car day. Okay. Cool. I mean, once you've done it, though, you don't really get to celebrate anymore, right? Unless you get a new car? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:47 Or do you name a different name every week or every month? I don't know. Every year I can't get out the time of year. What's your car's name, dude? Do you have a car name? No. No. I honestly have never named a car. Sure.
Starting point is 00:18:01 Ever. And I know that people do. And I like... This is like a Transformers thing. You know what I mean? Yeah. Like, my car is straight up Optimus Dime, dude. It's a dime, bro.
Starting point is 00:18:12 So I think we should name our cars tomorrow. Okay. Mine is Optimus Dime, bro. It's like a transformer, but it's like a 10 out of 10. I need something like some playoff like boss hog like I don't know Boss hog too
Starting point is 00:18:28 Yeah I don't know The general leave Like I don't know From the Duke's Hazard Sure You need I need like a cool name Like the I don't know
Starting point is 00:18:38 I can't think of it The Mitsubishi I'm gonna call my car The Mitsubishi go on Even though it's not one The black stallion It's all blacked out Blacked out
Starting point is 00:18:45 Blacked out And it's not a Ranger over Because I'm not cool Hey you get You don't have the map black, though. I don't have, I just said it wasn't cool, and now you're going to double down on how I'm cool. Matt Black. No, I liked my car, but I don't name. No, I don't. How about Monday's National Techies Day? Cool. Every time I'm on, you set me up to call people nerds, man. Every time,
Starting point is 00:19:13 you're just like, hallelujah, bump setting, spiking. Sorry to all the nerd techie, whatever. Whatever nerd you identify it, damn it, dude, I'm going to leave now. National Nerd Day. No, I don't think he's or nerd. Is Elon Musk a nerd? He might be a nerd, but he's a nerd, but he's like the rock star nerd. Jeff Bezos. All the nerds are the wealthiest people in the world, you know, so.
Starting point is 00:19:38 They're still nerds, you know what I mean? Well, I think they're okay with it. Differing opinions. I kind of like nerds, you know, because they're smart. And I like to surround myself with people. smarter than myself. Sure. You know, it's not a hard job.
Starting point is 00:19:54 I don't need to be around nerds. Everybody is smarter than me. So anybody I'm around is, I've been surrounded by somebody smarter than me. Well, we'll celebrate National Techies Day in your honor. Okay. What are you going to do? You know, we'll get like a box of nerds and I don't know, pour them around, put in pop rocks.
Starting point is 00:20:16 I don't know. Nerds ropes, do you had pop rocks before? like the popping your mouth stuff? Yes. I'm an older, it's older person's day and I'm an older person. Yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:20:28 This is true. All right, moving to our news. That felt like a lot of news, but moving to our actual marketing and advertising news. Everyone that comes here for like clinical marketing discussion. Clinical marketing.
Starting point is 00:20:43 I don't know that anyone does anymore. They've really been listening. We're just going to tell you, you know, I mean, the social holidays is important because if you're planning out your social media calendar for your clients, sure. You need to have those important holidays. 100%.
Starting point is 00:20:56 You need to get your techies post out. You should have already done your international coffee day. If you're a barista and you haven't put it up on your, like, feed or whatever. Sure. Screwed. If you're an older person, you probably like coffee. Yep. Coffee is technically vegetarian.
Starting point is 00:21:10 You can triple up right there. Celebrate three holidays at once. Very good. I like it. So our first article, today. comes from MarketingDive. MarketingDive.com. Today's podcast brought you by MarketingDive. They have some great art because it's one of my favorite places that get news sources.
Starting point is 00:21:31 So go give them some love and whatever traffic we drive there. We expect 3% back marketing dive. But Unilever has started a new program where they're donating towards companies' startups. So, you know, Unilever owns a lot of brands, packaged goods, you know, Dove, Axe, Lifting Tea. You know, they all run together, right? Axe, bro. Axe, bro. I got my axe, body spray.
Starting point is 00:22:02 So, but they know they're getting their ass kick by a lot of direct-to-consumer brands, like startups. So they're starting a fund to try to purchase these startups, especially ones that are leveraging social commerce. You familiar with social commerce? This is one of our, let me say, if you come here for the clinical stuff, go back to last year's November radcast, where Josh and I did up-and-coming trends. And social commerce was number two, and it's blown up this year. So it has come true and shameless plug. Go back and listen to it.
Starting point is 00:22:36 You're a little late, but some of them still hold value. You just went Rain Man on the episode number. You went through the catalog? Oh, yeah. And pulled that out of it. We're like it 200 episodes now. I don't really like think through it. But in all seriousness,
Starting point is 00:22:50 their Unilever is seeing all these companies pop up and they want to own them. Own them. They want to control all of them. And they see these brands. And we're working with one. Prattaddy.com is the leading crystal jewelry seller in the U.S. I can say that.
Starting point is 00:23:09 Spencer and Heidi are doing a great job. And they crush it with social commerce. They do lives three times a week. week, some weeks, where they literally go on and they have like a little studio and they have their jewelry and Heidi's showing them and Spencer's showing them. And they almost sell out every time they do it. They go on for like an hour. And so they're crushing it. And so it's that it's, it's the QVC effect, baby. It's like someone's selling it. You know, online live. They feel like they're engaging with them. They see it. It just, it creates this swell and it's working. Sure.
Starting point is 00:23:44 like all these YouTube was like to recreate like movies and TV but now it's all about recreating QVC is what it sounds like it sort of is I'm not QVC's doing well too as I understand it they were well positioned for this other than the fact that no one has TV anymore so you're saying that a smart move is basically have your own version of a QVC with your product yes here's what you do no matter what you sell set up an e-commerce store and at least twice a week on Instagram or Facebook, depending on where you had the most audience, go live with product that you're selling, demonstrating, talking about it, storytelling,
Starting point is 00:24:25 whatever that is, make it engaging, whether you go on for 10 minutes or an hour, and you're selling socially. So people are kind of getting that interaction that's a little more edutainment. Okay, yeah. Ding, ding, ding. I think it's made up a word there.
Starting point is 00:24:42 I don't know if that. Someone's already copyrighted it. sure, but edutainment. And it's working, man. People start buying that shit. And it's how you get people engaged with the brand. It really crosses a lot of bases, but it does sell really well. Okay.
Starting point is 00:24:59 Let's have you got a good product. Social commerce. Social commerce. Live social commerce. Can I sell dime bags? Don't answer that. Don't answer that. Okay.
Starting point is 00:25:14 Next article, also from Marketing Dive. So C4 energy drinks, look, as I drink my Ilani knew, like this is going to be the energy podcast. Yes, man. Okay, hold up real quick. Keep going, but I already have a complaint, man. So, okay, I've got a good story.
Starting point is 00:25:34 So I do drink a couple energy drinks a day. Someone's going to text me and tell me they're killing me, but look, we all have to have some vices. That's my, if that's only one of a couple, then hopefully I'm okay. Okay. That's one of your 10. One of my 10 vices. But in all seriousness, C4's kind of sucked like their energy drinks have. Yeah. But they finally have gotten better because the flavors have gotten a little better. Okay. And they've got a new Starburst Fusion flavor. And they're doing a pop-up truck and lots of digital contents. They're playing up this partnership, so to speak. The flavor meets the energy company.
Starting point is 00:26:10 And let me tell you, as someone that likes Starburst flavors, I'm pretty excited about this. And Alani New, you need to get some cherry slush in the stores because they don't sell it in the gas stations. Today's podcast brought to you by C4 and Malani Nu. But serious, you know what I do have coming from Malani New? I don't. I'm doing so much marketing for them right now. Which is Brew. Okay.
Starting point is 00:26:31 Is the new flavor for the holidays. They sold out online in like 10 seconds. But I found it at the vitamin shop. Got two cases coming. Okay. If we would be having one right now, we definitely want our Halloween edition. What is it? Candy Apple.
Starting point is 00:26:44 caramel candy apple or something i don't know i haven't had it yet but i'm looking forward to it i might mix it with this slushy cherry dude hook him up where are you guys had i don't want to new i know i told i'd be their first male influencer it's a it's an energy drink for women dude that's a great market spot though i think yeah they can you know switch it up i wantyneu come on but anyway what i'm going to say about c4 that's like the most you know most energy drinks are like monster, red bull. C4, it's just, that's literally an explosive device. You know what I mean? That's like the most aggressive name ever. Like, what's up? We're an improvised explosion, dude. It's like, my heart is already concerned about the men of caffeine I'm taking it. And then it's like,
Starting point is 00:27:27 C4, dude. We've got nuclear warhead energy, bro. The radiation will kill you. We'll blow your heart up. That's a military weapon. Yeah. It's also probably one of the most well-known and a lot of the Curious bodybuilders don't like it Because they kind of sold out And you buy it like Walmart now But like everywhere you go You see it But it is probably the oldest
Starting point is 00:27:51 One of the oldest Energy Slash nutrition companies They mean they make protein And all kinds of stuff Imagine getting pulled over by the cops So if you're a bodybuilder And you have a trunk full of them
Starting point is 00:28:01 And the cops like Do you have anything in your trunk? It's like got a bunch of C4 back there You would be like What? Yes Yes I got lots of cases of C4 in there.
Starting point is 00:28:18 Damn, dude. Have you tried the Iwani Witches Brew? That would be funny. Border Patrol. Or you get it at the airport. Don't say that. What's in there? I've got my C4 workout.
Starting point is 00:28:31 Pre-workout. What? Oh, no. Dogs are coming, flying. TSA agents coming over. He just did a somersault, ninja style over, you know. Some kid, just to take you down.
Starting point is 00:28:44 You say C4 is not TSA approved of what you're telling me. No, no C4 allowed it through the checkpoints. I know what it seems like, but I got the good kind of C4 guys. It's the new flavor. It's the newest. I got some BSAAs in there. I've got some C4 and some creatine. I'm like, whoa, all right, I'm taking you in the back room here.
Starting point is 00:29:08 It's the new flavor machine gun cherry, dude. Don't, I don't know what the flavors are. Yeah, you get a one, the surefire way to get a complete pat down in the back room. Anyone looking for a good pat down, you know, go to the airport and say you got C-4 in the book bag. Right, we can just agree, though. That's like the most like hardcore of the energy drink. It certainly is. Moving on.
Starting point is 00:29:33 Facebook, you can now watch Reels. So, you know, Reels. Yeah. Instagram Reels? Instagram Reels. And they have them on Facebook now, too. Facebook Reels. I don't know if they're calling it that.
Starting point is 00:29:46 But I think everything's starting to kind of come together with Facebook and Instagram. You can now watch them in your news feed. Reals. Cool. It's funny. Like anything that says how far behind, I think they are, when you see Reels, like in an article, within seven words or one sentence, TikTok.
Starting point is 00:30:12 It's, they're equivalent to TikTok. It's like they, they cannot not be associated with TikTok. Sure. My favorite is when people, because they do it anyway, they just upload the TikTok version too real.
Starting point is 00:30:25 So it has, with the logo. Exactly. It's like, what's their bigger slap in the face? You're furthering their brand even more. It's supposed to kills your algorithm, though,
Starting point is 00:30:33 like if they do. Really? Yeah. They have like literally, when they have image readers, and if they see that, they'll fucking crush your numbers. Really?
Starting point is 00:30:40 Yeah. I think I was doing that inadvertently with some of our content. It's like, we need to take that off. Okay. So. I love it. I love the pettiness of like, look, we're going to steal your technology, but we're not going to embrace it in any way.
Starting point is 00:30:56 Are you, do you, how often do you check TikTok a day? Not, I, TikTok is, I have to be in a mood, but when I am there, I'm there for too long. Yeah, getting the vortex. Sure. Yeah. I think it's the most entertaining. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:10 It is. But it's kind of annoying, too. Sure. I can only, like, I can, I can mindlessly scroll Instagram. Yeah. And it not kind of like overwhelm me. I get fatigued with TikTok. I don't know if it's my age, you know.
Starting point is 00:31:27 Well, the problem is. And I get down the rabbit hole too. Like, I might, oh, I thought it was two minutes and it was 20. Like, but it's, I get fatigued from it. I don't have an interest of coming back to it for a little while. Sure. something I realize is the plagiarism aspect of it where it's like I'm copying a trend so you'll see a video and you're like that's funny and then later you'll see the same video but somebody else did it and then you're like wait who actually thought of this but both of them are doing very well so there's a lot of copycat syndrome going on there you know what I mean oh yeah well I mean if something goes viral it's like and I guess that's the whole nature of like the dance challenge style like everybody's doing the same dance and I'm like okay whatever you know You know, like compare which one does it best.
Starting point is 00:32:12 Not the innovators platform. It's the copycatters platform. It's very much so, unless you see the first one of whatever it is, but how would you know? You wouldn't. In fact, if someone's bigger than you and does it, it's like... Then you're immediately relegated. 100%, dude. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:30 Scrolling to the next one. The great point, though, about, yeah, anytime you say real, five words away is going to be TikTok. Yes. Every time. So they can't. And I would love to see the real numbers comparison, like of reels versus TikToks. Now, it's not apples apples because Instagram has so many other features. Sure.
Starting point is 00:32:55 TikTok is kind of one trick pony to a degree. Yes, you can edit a billion different ways. I'm not knocking. I like the platform. I'm not fucking bustling on the platform. But like Instagram's got, you know, a blend of seven things. You've got lives. and I know TikTok has that now,
Starting point is 00:33:09 but you have reels, you have posts, you have stories, you know. Do you think from a branding perspective, like all these places are trying to become like conglomerates, but it's like you almost have your opinion of what, like, when I think of Instagram, I think of like photos and maybe some videos. Like, I feel like people are less accepting
Starting point is 00:33:27 of like these new outside edition because like that's TikTok's thing. And then, but if TikTok's sort of adding like pictures, you know what I mean? You know what I mean? Like I have a philosophy on this that's, probably a little different. And that's the high tide raises all ships. If TikTok didn't exist, no one would care about reels.
Starting point is 00:33:47 And if reels didn't exist, TikTok wouldn't keep innovating. And so they're all feeding into the content frenzy. Yeah. And so thus they're helping one another. Even though they see each other's competitors, let's not lie. Yeah. They're competing for ad dollars now. You know, TikTok is getting there.
Starting point is 00:34:04 They have an ad platform. It's getting better and better. They want, you know, brands. ad dollars there and personal brands. Yes. You know, just be spinning ads. So they certainly see each other's competitors.
Starting point is 00:34:14 But I would argue that, again, the reason we have this ferocious desire for content is because there are so many of these platforms. Yeah. And so they all feed one another. Sure. Makes sense. Do you think that consumers are turned off by the fact that, like,
Starting point is 00:34:30 it'd be like going to Chick-flay for, if Chick-fil-A-for-hand burgers, you're like, well, I'm not going to get a chick-flay for a hamburger. Do you think people see this and like, let's, I'm not going to go here for that? I will never stay here for that. I'll always go so. I think the Gen Ziers that are stuck up and look at things that way. Okay. And anyone, any millennial Gen X, whatever, anyone that's like huffy puffy about that, you know, people that I don't like very much.
Starting point is 00:34:58 Certainly there's some. They're like, oh, it's just not a mo. They're going to do that. And then everyone else who doesn't give a shit that just wants to consume content. Yeah. They're exploring them. You know, they don't care. You know, I think we're starting to differentiate, like, if I see the exact same video on reels that I saw on TikTok, you know, if the algorithm starts lining up and the content you're looking at is the same, then it probably is an adding value.
Starting point is 00:35:25 And I think, but there's so much of a built-in base with both of these platforms now, you know, millions and millions of people. So, you know, they're still purists out there, I'm sure that are like, ooh, just going to do it here. but, you know. Yeah. So I don't know. The, playing down that avenue. Okay. You know, we talked about the ability to start sponsoring trending content by brands.
Starting point is 00:35:48 But there's now a study that says brands have to be really careful to having too much proximity to content that may not on the surface seem bad. But the example they used was, like, like something like a pimple popper video, which gets tons of views, but it's kind of gross or whatever. But engagement alone is not the variable for success for every brand. And that stuff that may just grab all this attention. It's not good for the brand. It's not good for the brand because it actually gives a negative, like deep-seated mental aspect. And so some, and I think it makes it hard for brands, certainly you can kind of get there,
Starting point is 00:36:36 with that. It's kind of gross, whatever. But there's other things that may not seem inadvertently negative, but are causing, even though it got all this engagement, people kind of can't look away, kind of like, you know, like, you know, seeing a traffic accident. And you don't necessarily want to watch, but it's like you can't look away. Same kind of principle here. They get this mental association with it. And so there's a study out that shows how negative it's like a really bad for the brand. Okay. And that's that. And, And so it's making it really complex for brands to know what types of content to then associate with. I was about to say it sounds like it's going to make people extremely cautious to branded content to a degree.
Starting point is 00:37:19 Yeah. Well, it's kind of like, you know, the pendulum keeps swinging. It's like brands create their own shit. It's not real great. They partner with stuff because they don't want to create their own stuff and they want to get more engagement. But oh, wait a second. Make sure you're doing it with the right stuff. Sure.
Starting point is 00:37:35 So what do you think the solution is? The solution is the higher radical so that they can find the right context for you for your brand. Okay. I like that one. I like that one. Shameless plug. But in all seriousness, it is about context and making sure that like thinking through exactly an understanding consumer mindset for certain types of content.
Starting point is 00:37:57 And that's not an easy thing to evaluate. And like there's not like a perfect, you're not going to get it right every time. But it's super important. that you do. Yeah. But if you like Coke or something, like literally everybody in the world knows it. It's got such a,
Starting point is 00:38:11 like the demographics probably not so clear and understandable as like, C4, you know what I mean? Like, boom. That should have been their, you know,
Starting point is 00:38:23 tagline. Boom. Go boom. Sound your heart makes when you drink this. Palpitations. Palpitations. Palpitations. P-O-W.
Starting point is 00:38:35 Not a palp with... Well, there's another one. That's the best acronym either. Sure. Pau. That's hilarious. Yeah, go pal. So anyway, you got to be careful with, you know, so, you know,
Starting point is 00:38:48 the male carons, we got to be careful with the association with that. Sure, that's fine, dude. If this is your way of getting rid of me, on a podcast. No, I hear you on that one for sure. Yeah. I feel like, from a comedic perspective, Sometimes there's stuff where it's like, I don't want, I wouldn't want a brand associated with this anyway because it would be the, like, the same way brands don't want stuff, I wouldn't want a brand associated with like, certain things. Art or something.
Starting point is 00:39:16 Yeah. You know. It's art, by the way. It is art. It is art. It is art. It's art. The, uh, the fine line of content and branding.
Starting point is 00:39:29 Uh, so a company has raised $10 million. They're, uh, creating a dashboard. board for virtual meetings. So, i.e. like a Zoom or WebEx. So it tells you when you've talked too much over the call. I think it does like a percentage, you know, maybe of the, how many people were on, if I'm guessing, I don't know the entire algorithm because I didn't come up with it. But if I had to guess, like if it's a 30 minute call and there's six people on the call,
Starting point is 00:39:58 maybe it's telling you if you've talked too much because you might be wearing people out. Sure. I would say that most meetings, the fact that everyone showed up and talked, they've already talked too much because there's a lot of really boring, bad meetings where people talk just to... There's too many meetings, period. It's like there's a lot of them that could be emails. Sure.
Starting point is 00:40:15 I can agree with that. Yeah. Oh, this mom. Yes, yes. Meeting fatigue. Yeah. Could this have been an email? Okay, tomorrow are we meeting.
Starting point is 00:40:27 Sure. What if, well... Am I talking too much? Okay. It's like very passive, aggressive, like that, the robot is just like you're talking to. But okay, some people have... I could see someone hyper obsessing over this.
Starting point is 00:40:38 Like, oh God, my boss, Ralph is going to think I'm talking to my... No, I'm going to get this AI dashboard up. Oh, God, it says up, I'm one minute over. I'm being fired. Yes. Yeah, it's interesting because it like gets people to be probably more deliberate with what they're saying in a meeting situation, which is good. You like that.
Starting point is 00:40:57 I like it. But also, like if somebody is carrying the brunt of good ideas, Dan, you would probably want them to keep talking and not feel like, you know what I mean? Some people have really good points or they're on one on day and you're like, all right, I'll listen to what this person's saying. So we'll see. We'll see how that goes. I don't, I might bring it up. I don't know how much it's going to cost if it's like a free ad on.
Starting point is 00:41:20 I'd like to just test it out. It'd be kind of funny. I'll put it on people's like and they don't know it. And I'm going to be like, you're going to get knocked. Well, it would probably feel like you're on the, around the horn or some ESPN show where it's like crossfire. So Coke is unveiling a new global campaign. Their first in a few years. Finally.
Starting point is 00:41:40 Everyone's been clamoring, waiting for it. Their sales have been stagnant, you know, because what the problem is, you know, you've had everybody home with a pandemic and not going to places, movies, all these places, entertainment, football games, where all this Coke gets drank. And so their sales numbers have been off. And so they're coming out with a new. global campaign called Real Magic. That's their new tagline.
Starting point is 00:42:06 Hell yeah, dude. Tell me all about it. Yes, it's real magic. A little dichotomy, a little play on words there. Okay. You know, because magic. The magic is real. Nice.
Starting point is 00:42:17 So they get a new spot out. And, you know, it didn't feel magical to me. There it was, folks. It was, this kids play. It was very well produced. Let me say this.
Starting point is 00:42:31 Okay. Graphics, awesome. The visual content, awesome. All the mechanics, lovely, lovely spot. High tech, CGI, all kinds of shit going on. But it's like the kid's playing a video game, and he's in an e-sports tournament. All these kids are playing, this fighting game. He grabs a Coke, takes a sip.
Starting point is 00:42:55 The character that he is in the game becomes aware of the kid. drinking the coke and puts his axe down and makes peace with all the other characters in the video game because he drank coke because he had coke and it was magic and you're only one coke away that was like the line we're all just one coke away from putting down our fake digital weapon and turning this fighting game into a chat room yeah exactly like these kids are there like button mash and like you know the whole fun is like playing and it's like it sounds like they're instead of real magic It's like taking away the real fun of the game. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:43:36 The whole point of the game is that we got to make all these statements. Everything has to make a statement, you know. And maybe I'm just taking it that way. No, 100. But it has to be, you know, a statement. Oh, and the video game shouldn't even be fighting. What are we teaching our kids? Like, oh, God.
Starting point is 00:43:57 Okay. Dave Chappelle had the one thing about during 9-11. MTV called Jha Rule and he was playing around like oh thank God they called Jha Rule during this trying time thank you dude with the world in crisis bro thank God Coca-Cola
Starting point is 00:44:12 made an ad to bring peace virtually to the e-gamerers bro think good it's like there's actual like warfare and they're like yeah but this is like a metaphor like what's going on in the world and maybe if we all just drank Coke yeah we'll be better you know I understand
Starting point is 00:44:29 I've been in this business for 20 years. And, you know, reading it, though, is like, it's hard not to be cynical in this. Like, we've updated our logo. It's called the hugging Coca-Cola logo. It wraps around the bottle in a unique way. It's hugs the bottle. And it's the hugging logo. The pandering. Of the Coca-Cola. And we've got this new campaign. You know, we've known in times that, you know, what really brings people together is a Coca-Cola. And it's really, you know, there's this part of Coke that's outward and going. And then there's the secret sauce. a Coke and I'm like it's we've come out with real magic and I'm like I'm reading this and I'm
Starting point is 00:45:06 like eye rolling the whole time and like I've been in the business and like we're never going to work with Coke by the way for after the store like every other brand I think we're going to like but it's like just get over yourself sure like you know like you make you make a delicious product I love Coke zero my favorite like soda but like you're not hey man I'm having a internal crisis I got furloughed it's like hey man I can't pay rent it's like hey brother have a Coke don't worry if that it. Yeah. It'll be fine. But, you know, these people, and I get, look, these people have jobs. They're trying to make the brand relevant. They're trying to sell more Coke. That's, that's the
Starting point is 00:45:41 American way. Like, I don't have a problem with that. I'm not cynical about that. It's just like, I read this stuff. And I'm like, do you really think this is how people are thinking about this? Like, just really what, you know. Yeah. The justification of. That's what I'm saying. It's like, oh, real magic. When you watched it, I watched you watch the ad. And you said, this is ironic. I have to watch an ad before I watched the ad. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:08 Yeah. That's the state of the world for living it. It was. I was like, I'm just trying to play this ad to be informed for the show. Sure. And I'd watch a 20 second ad to watch the commercial. The actual ad. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:21 Which, by the way, this concept as you talk about it, like literally every product in the world could be like this. Like someone pulls up Mr. Clean or whatever. And I was just watching. it thinking like okay if this is like gears of war like uh freaking what's like one of the most violent what's like super violent video games like black ops like yeah you know like they're gonna put their guns down they're not really fighting one another do you the irony is so rich though there's like actual violence going on in the world and it's like yeah but we stop the they're not real
Starting point is 00:46:53 violence it's like yeah the esports violence we're going to get rid of that it's like no one anyway my lawyer said don't talk anymore so yeah Yeah, he did. I got buzzed it in the pocket. It was like, uh, ex-day, ex-nay. That's all our articles this week. Great, man. It's been a wonderful time. Anything on the horizon? Dude. Sure.
Starting point is 00:47:18 The Joey Thompson show? Yeah, just shot a video about emo men when they grow up in a graveyard this weekend. And, uh, we spent all day in a graveyard dressed, uh, like emo men. And, uh, what's an emo men? Uh, like, I'm, like, you know, like, emo kids that are like sad, e-boys. Do you have you heard of E-boy? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. All right.
Starting point is 00:47:43 It's basically E-Men. So let up tick, like, E-boys for E-Men. Okay. And so it's got a bunch of nostalgic references for people who are in my age range around 22 or so. And, uh, of sad boys. Sad boys. Kids.
Starting point is 00:47:58 Yes. Yeah. Spoiled kids. It was described as like, uh, like a sad. version of Napoleon dynamite basically it's very like deadpan emphasis on dead like yeah obsessed with morbidity but not really like you know as sad just they pretend to be i got you so sounds like a real hit i think it's gonna be great time with how i really do is it scary or is it funny it's very funny it'll be it'll be edited in silly ways but it's like
Starting point is 00:48:29 basically these guys talking about how bad their lives are you know Some people have like a fascination with morbidity. Again, even like for, just because they want attention, really. Yeah. So, you know, these guys hang out in the graveyard and say sad things and get stick and poke tattoos. You know sticking poke tattoos? Oh, yeah. Of Jack Skellington from Tim Burton's nightmare before Christmas.
Starting point is 00:48:51 We're hitting every, every stereotype. We had, our last thing I'll say is because you feel weird about shooting in a graveyard, right? You're like, uh, should I be here? and one little kid was walking by. He's like, mommy, it's a vampire. It's watching. Like literally a kid walking by? Yeah, their family was walking by.
Starting point is 00:49:09 They didn't look like they were trying to see a dead relative. It looks like they were destroying me. Mommy, it's a vampire. And this other guy rolls up in a minivan on us. And we're like, uh-oh, this is like that Undertaker or something. He's going to kick us out of the graveyard. He's like, hey, man, me and my family, my kids were geomining, which I don't know what geo mining is.
Starting point is 00:49:28 It's like Pokemon Go or something. Yeah. He goes, yeah, there was geo-mining. And we said, what the fuck is going on over there, man? We got to see what the fuck y'all up to, man. And I was like, hey, I'm in white face paint. Filming. But I was worried I was going to get in big trouble.
Starting point is 00:49:48 And the guy was just like, the kids were young to. He was, what the fuck's up, man? I was like, okay, man. What's up, dude? Well, that's it, man. That's all that's going on. it sounds like a lot there's other stuff
