Starting point is 00:00:00 The hottest part of that need is starting again. You're listening to the Radcast. If it's radical, we cover it. Here's your host, Ryan Alford. Hey guys, what's up? Welcome to the latest edition of the Radcast. It's our weekly marketing and advertising news here on July 9th, 2021. I'm Ryan Alford. And I'm Josh Hill. And we are here in the Radcast studio, the home of Radical, the baddest, coolest, greatest, if I dare say, digital ad agency in the country. And we are excited to talk about this week's news post July 4th. How many hot dogs?
Starting point is 00:00:47 Did you have any hot dog eating contest? Oh man, no contest, but got one down. I think I had a couple wieners on Sunday or Saturday. I don't know. No buns though. No buns. I had more burgers though. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:02 More burgers. We did all kinds of cooking out the lake. It was a good weekend. Lots of sun, lots of beers. Maybe too many Yeah. I had more burgers. We did all kinds of cooking out at the lake. It was a good weekend. Lots of sun. Lots of beers. Maybe too many beers. I don't know. Just 1,000 beers.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Yeah, 1,000. I think we may have had 100 beers between the five days. We were there like Friday to Monday night. We drove back Tuesday morning. I don't know. Extended stay. Yeah. Any memorable moments
Starting point is 00:01:25 from the 4th? Oh man. Saw some fireworks at a party and there's a group of children and one of the spark streams from one of the fireworks came very close to those kids. Oh no.
Starting point is 00:01:41 And so a lot of them ran away screaming. So that was memorable. Did you shoot any fireworks? No, I just watched this year. Did a couple streamers. There was like 17 fireworks that was going on around us. It was pretty spectacular. I was like trying to add up. I'm not like the most frugal person,
Starting point is 00:01:59 but it was just going, how much money did each one of... I was trying to see how high the fireworks go. You tell how much money did each one? I was trying to see how high the fireworks go, like comparing. Can you tell how much money was spent? How wide? The higher they go, the more expensive they are, or the wider the boom?
Starting point is 00:02:13 Oh, man. That's a great question. I want to know. I remember checking out some fireworks with friends, and we were like, ooh, these are way more expensive than we thought. We're not going to cut into our beer budget for this, so we left. That sounds like an Instagram channel.
Starting point is 00:02:25 Fireworks with friends. Yeah. F. W. F. We're going to start your new channel. Perfect. Fireworks with friends.
Starting point is 00:02:34 What could go wrong there? Nothing. Fails. Fails with friends. Yeah. So it's been a good week. Yeah. Been great week.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Yeah. Any hot or memorable client moments this week so far is we're a little bit in the summer haze like there's work going on it's busy i think but clients and people people are on vacation schedules so you've got in and out you know it's not that we're any less busy or stuff going on but i feel like some of the normal i don't know craziness is settled down a bit is that fair to say i think so yeah yeah yeah got some new new regular campaigns some good old campaign maintenance going on uh yeah had some really great uh team meetings this week of kind of coming up some some fun ideas yeah we, we have these brainstorm meetings, and let me just say this.
Starting point is 00:03:25 I come into some, and I try to stay out of them because I think I scare everybody. I don't know why, but it's like, dude, come up with some ideas. Anyway, everybody gets in a room, and I was having another call or doing something, but there was quite a ruckus going on in the old conference room.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Anything you can share, Josh, or these things all have to stay on the shelf they'll be revealed in the in their time but all right we're getting some funny bones in there oh that's good that's good in our on our google trends of the week i did notice looking at today's uh or this week's uh trending topics it was like number two when i looked this up so technically being a friday episode this was technically on thursday yesterday but uh the old megan fox was like trending megan fox and machine gun kelly do they hit your radar normally because they pop up every every couple weeks okay yeah i mean it was a big stink supposedly because she was talking about the
Starting point is 00:04:22 difference between a man and woman so machine gun kelly's four years younger than she is and everybody gives her shit for that and then like which i think is stupid but you know nonetheless i i someone's gonna hear this and like send it to machine gun kelly's people and i'm probably gonna like get like blasted but i'm just gonna say this can we just not i'm fine with the alternative look i've got tattoos i'm cool with the earrings this is not a judgment at all of that it's more just that he just looks out of it you know like in the pictures and i'm just like dude i mean you're with hot chick like yeah you be you i'm not talking about you being you i'm not even talking about pretty ugly i'm not even making that comment it's more just the spaced out look.
Starting point is 00:05:05 Yeah. You know? Like, is that perfected or is that like just by random? Maybe it's just like he's just worn out from trying to keep up with Megan Fox. The legendary Megan Fox. Yes. Yes. Guys.
Starting point is 00:05:16 Homie looks tired. Homie does look tired. He always looks tired and kind of out of it. And I'm not, I don't even want to say like, oh, he looks like he's on drugs. I'm not judging like that. It's more just, I don't know. he's not excited to be anywhere yeah like dude be happy man he's an interesting dude making boxes next to me you know i'm a single guy if i was a single guy megaphys i'm not in a bad mood yeah i'm either just like smiling gator ear i'm just crying yes yeah one or the other yeah yeah yeah yeah so uh anything good uh we always do our little
Starting point is 00:05:48 segment uh with tiktok with any of the trending hashtags or you know concepts or just things that you're seeing over and over anything hitting your radar some weird ones i wanted to bring up all right uh one of the trending ones is tiktok resumes i've seen this for like specific like specific internships that maybe like a media agency's done where they're like we're trying to be cool like do a resume or whatever but i've been seeing some that were other people trying to give like business advice and these are like 19 year olds trying to give business advice so it's not their tiktok resume to say i'm a tiktok influencer this is my tiktok it's like this is my tiktok resume for getting a real job somewhere
Starting point is 00:06:32 else this is this is what it's becoming people are trying to make it and so i saw a couple where they're like trying to be really personal and like here's what i do here's my experience blah blah I like to do this and I was like like this is very it's for a very niche uh job market yeah no like how many uh how many man I don't even know what jobs are applying for how many managers or people that would hire them right are there you know like looking like if someone just some imagining how you get that to someone like you just send them the link and then someone i just imagine someone opening that opening that link in my bio yeah it's like like someone's in a tiktok resume like do what now yeah what can you check out my tiktok resume that's just how you hey you email for a job application and it's like, see link here.
Starting point is 00:07:25 Right. Just go watch this video. Yeah. My advice for this is if you're trying to do a social media job, I would maybe treat it like a portfolio and not a resume. But, you know, like for a job at an ad agency, I could I could if it was done creatively as well, I could be down with that. Oh, yeah. I'm not so sure, you know, if're going to be an investment banker or something. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:07:49 Something more mainstream. Oh, yeah. That it's going to be, I don't know. Hopefully, maybe managers can see the creativity in anything. We'll see. Yeah. Yeah. I'm sure it'll happen.
Starting point is 00:08:00 We'll see. What else is in? Another one. This restock trend is massive. It's huge. And so the whole trend is centered around watching people get home from the grocery store. And they have all these, like, you know, the plastic clear bins for refrigerators and cabinets and stuff. People just very neatly organizing the groceries inside of it.
Starting point is 00:08:20 And so they'll take out, like, a multi-bag of chips and then carefully place each one in there they'll open up their ramen packets put it there their sauce this is at home restocking yeah so they're like taking things out of packages and putting them in different packages and people love watching it they're getting millions of views there's like there's billions actual billions of uses of the hashtag like restock a restock trend i'm not into it if my wife my wife would enjoy this if she watched if she got to watch me doing these this is what she would do because i just you know that's that's kind of it's not that i'm not organized with certain things but uh you know she comes home and she organizes where the grocery goes. And she's a very rules person, very organized person like that.
Starting point is 00:09:12 I think it would, because she told me this morning, literally, she's been off this week. And she said she gets the most satisfaction by making the bed up every morning. Because sometimes we're both in such a hurry. Like we're running out. We're kids everywhere. We're doing stuff.
Starting point is 00:09:29 And it's not that we're slobs. It's just the bed sometimes gets left behind in the morning. A lot of times it gets left behind in the morning. Mainly because I'm still in it when she's leaving. And I don't make it up. Even though it's kind of like one of those things. It's like I guess I have this structure. I go to the gym.
Starting point is 00:09:44 I do things in some ways. am a very structured like organized person but making up the bed even though they say and i people say well if you make your bed up in the morning it starts on the right foot every like book you read that's like you know goal setting and all these things and i'm like bullshit you know i got my stuff together and i don't make my fucking bed but with that said it's uh my wife has enjoyed that i think she would enjoy the restocking yeah a lot of people do do you make your bed every morning when you get up absolutely not okay yeah uh daniel our producer daniel do you do you you make every i think that's pretty good all right annual one out of three not too bad nice nice
Starting point is 00:10:21 yeah and lastly what else we got on tiktok uh this is my the fun one it's been around for a little bit but it's gotten really big this week uh it's a song a sound comes in and then all of a sudden it's just we do not care and then like a beat drops and so it's just like been used by a bunch of different people of like oh like someone's trying to tell you how to do something like oh that's not how you do it and people like be like cooking in the most ridiculous way or like wearing something weird and they're just like we do not care is it they they show them doing something for a little while and then they play that we do not care there is one it was like mari uh he he did one where they're like oh we like miss your old show like show, the way you used to do things and something.
Starting point is 00:11:06 And he's like, we do not care. And it's just him posing hard and stuff is cool. All right. Love to see it. We'll give that one a ding. Cool. We'll move straight to the news. Number one on the list.
Starting point is 00:11:21 I like this one. It was just like we had to put a stake in the ground. According to Instagram, they have put a stake in the ground and they are saying we are no longer a photo sharing app. Wow. News of the week. After how many product launches, like we do not want to be considered a photo airing. We have 17 other features. And I was like, OK, did they feel like they needed to say that? launch is like we do not want to be considered a photo airing we have 17 other features and uh
Starting point is 00:11:45 i was like okay did they feel like they needed to say that is it like with tiktok and everything else taking off it's like we need to come out and say this we need to make sure people know it's not just photos anymore yeah of all people i've only seen one person say anything about this online and they're like this is stupid this makes me not want to use the app anymore i was like that's a weird response i was like also it's mostly just like a categorization in the app store like i mean i'd love to know the percentage i don't this is probably out there but like story content versus you know photo posts i have to think it's got that that it's almost more store i would think more stories than posts so it's like
Starting point is 00:12:25 and most i know there's pictures and stories i put pictures and stories but like 70 percent of story content is video or motion of some sort is that a fair estimate and so like okay we gotta come out say they did say here's what they the four things they are josh number one they're no longer photo sharing they don't even have it in their top four what they, the four things they are, Josh. Number one, they're no longer photo sharing. They don't even have it in their top four, what they're for. Number one, we are for creators. We'll come back to these as we go through. Number two, video. No shit.
Starting point is 00:12:55 Number three, shopping. Okay. Social commerce. Number three and number four, messaging. None of any of those surprise you. I guess not. Maybe the top of the shopping. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:13:10 I don't know a lot of people who shop on Instagram, but apparently people are doing it. I guess. And the shopping button. I know that people were selling them things, right? They're shopping inadvertently. Right. We're disturbing them with ads that make them shop.
Starting point is 00:13:24 That's what we do here at the agency. But intentional shopping, I know they have the shopping button. And maybe I'm the only, but I do buy stuff through the ads. The ads work on me. Hey, they should work on you too. This is actually a commercial. The ads should work on you. Ads, ads, ads.
Starting point is 00:13:42 Ads, ads, ads from the ad agency. But in all seriousness, but actually hitting the shopping button to just browse through stuff has not become every week behavior for me yet. Yeah, it's not my Amazon. But maybe it will now because they say that it should be.
Starting point is 00:14:02 I could see them moving something like Facebook Marketplace on there. Yeah, right. Because with all these other features, they're just making a Facebook with a different layout. I like that, Josh. That's a double ding. Oh, yeah. There's an idea for you there, Instagram.
Starting point is 00:14:18 They probably thought of it already, because I do use the hell out of some Marketplace. Yeah. Even when I'm not, I kind of do shop there, even when I'm not shopping. I of some marketplace. Yeah. Even when I'm not, I kind of do shop there when, when I'm not shopping, I have some keywords things saved. Like,
Starting point is 00:14:28 you know, I'm always looking at like for the office, like patio furniture. I got that like saved. There's something like unique. Yeah. It pops up. We want to throw it in here.
Starting point is 00:14:36 And then like, I don't know some other random topics, but I'll kind of just peruse it, make sure somebody's not giving away something that I want. Totally. I've gotten plenty of things from there. Everything on Instagram that is shopping feels more like just another e-commerce, like polished e-commerce store, which is fine. Not really used goods.
Starting point is 00:14:55 That could definitely be a detour. I'm going to give that one another ding. Yeah. And then messaging, it seems normal, even though I will say say having gotten way more into this recently and and we do some dm campaigns for clients and stuff like this but i get a lot of dms i think relatively uh people selling me stuff people dm me to be on podcasts whatever it is and the it's not a great experience the messaging app you know you can't like can't put stuff in folders you can't save anything you can't wear email and certain other things and i
Starting point is 00:15:32 know it's a different it's messaging it's not the greatest of experiences for mass message it's still like really kind of chat centric and that's that where I mean, like my personal use of it comes in as like group, group messages. And like recently, like friends have been inviting, like throwing like parties and cookouts, like the cookouts I went to last weekend where we're all like started from Instagram group messages,
Starting point is 00:15:59 which is interesting, but that way it's a little more temporary and you like, that is the frustrating part is you can't save anything. It's all like the videos and pictures you send are depending on how you send it are temporary i think they've got this hodgepodge going on between trying to be like snapchat they tried the disappearing content and all that and then trying to be like facebook with messaging and then they're somewhere in the messy middle. Right. And it's not optimal. Yeah. Yeah. It makes it really difficult for like advertising from from messaging. Yes, it does.
Starting point is 00:16:31 The second news of the week. TikTok is testing. Cameo features. creators or superstars or celebrities basketball players whatever cameos an app where you could get them to do shout out videos for you i did one of these for actually nicole did for her thing i had i had uh chris harrison who's been cancel cultured uh but made a lot of money in the process um did the shout out for her and he really handed up and and uh but you can get videos where they call you out and say things people give it as gifts but tiktok's testing a similar thing where creators and everything can get paid
Starting point is 00:17:17 for custom shout outs what do you think of this i think it makes a lot makes a lot of sense yeah like cameo is one of those things where it's the feature not a like platform in a way where i think that was kind of what like clubhouse was it's a feature not a that's exactly right but i think it makes a lot of sense in the tiktok world um especially with the way like the user base interacts like they're always trying to get the shout outs in the comments they're like always replying hoping that they'll get a video response to the comments. I think it makes sense for Instagram too. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:17:48 I mean, it's the same thing. You've got all these influencers and celebrities and all these people on there, and it's another way for everyone to monetize it. Definitely. And you know, people pay for it. It's cool, I think it's fun. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:00 But again, to your point, it's a feature when you have a network built in. Cameo has, to their credit, they've built up the network of celebrities. But it's kind of like, I get on there right now and see if there's something to be something fun. I feel like the quality goes up and down of certain ones that do it. I don't know. But if it's built into the platform where people already are naturally, including celebrities, then I think you could see a takeoff.
Starting point is 00:18:30 So I think that will be successful. And finally, I like this one. Chipotle hides giveaway codes. So they've had TV spots this week that have been hiding giveaway codes where you can enter to win a bunch of money and lots of burritos. It's been embedded into the TV screen. It's the game yeah within a game i think this is fun i think it's a good way to interject online offline especially if you're like watching at home or something like that yeah and then kind
Starting point is 00:18:57 of intermixing it seemed seemed like a nice play what do you think absolutely i mean it's a this is like a real value offer yeah right we tell clients all the time and with our own stuff it's like you're going to make an ad like have a compelling offer if you want to improve your response improve your offer yeah yes so i'll think good job yes and i think that's like a they're giving me like a like up to a million dollars worth of burritos it could be. So that would be cool. Yes, and that's one of the, like, I do think, do you like Chipotle? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:32 Yeah. Who doesn't like burritos or some chips or whatever? Were they, like, in the realm of, I'm venturing a little bit here off this, but we've got Barbaritos, Chipotle, Moe's, Asada, I think or something. Asada is great.
Starting point is 00:19:53 Yeah, that's local but there's other what's the favorite? Take out the local. I think I just named it local. Let's take out just the national chains. Oh yeah, national ones. Oh man. If a Burritos, Barbaritosara does a mose and a chipotle we're right next to each other i'm probably heading chipotle yeah yeah kind of went up and down with their little bit of a snag with the uh getting everybody sick yeah but it does taste
Starting point is 00:20:22 a little fresher yeah you know and barbarritos is up on my list too like i really they're low they're more of a local chain i think they got like they seem to be like splitting the difference between moe's and chipotle for me yeah but moe's i love because it's a little more like closer to the taco bell spectrum which i love uh i'm not i don't think of it as like a like fancy to like disgusting I think of it more of like a horizontal thing of like your your fun Taco Bell like yeah drunk food versus like your classy uh refreshing Chipotle yeah but going back to the uh marketing play here the uh venture there into the food hope we made you hungry yeah the uh i do like the notion of building
Starting point is 00:21:05 in gate like when you do content where there's a video or a post or something building some natural and not when i say natural built into the content the action or the step for people to take interactivity probably the better way gamification i really like versus call to you know just like showing something call to action go visit here but when you get someone and truly engage where they have to engage with the content to kind of get something out of it yeah which leads to another step i really like that when you're in thinking about campaigns yeah engaging beyond just a click and it's you're in it it. And then you hit the, you have the like tangible actual burrito thing put in your face. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:21:49 I like it. That's our news for the week here. Ending our July 4th holiday week. Sort of. It was on a Sunday. It'll be your day for holiday. Definitely. But,
Starting point is 00:22:02 uh, cool. Thank you, Josh. Thank you. Well, you know where to find us. We're at the radcast. Definitely. But, cool. Thank you, Josh. Thank you. Well, you know where to find us. We're at theradcast.com. I'm at Ryan Offord
