you're listening to the latest radcast news update here's ryan and riley hey guys what's up
welcome to the latest edition of the radcast it's friday happy friday everyone friday january 22nd
what's up riley hey uh nothing much just just really hanging out and working a lot on this beautiful episode
we have planned for you today.
We have so much information, honestly, in this episode, so I'm excited for us to...
There's a lot of tidbits in the news, in the marketing news.
This is our weekly Friday marketing news update.
We try to capture the headlines and the major brands and the,
you know, tidbits here and there that we think are interesting based on what's happening
in the marketing, advertising, digital space, the land with which we roam daily.
Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
So, yeah, it's been a good week, though. We've had a good release on Tuesday.
I hope you've checked out the Austin Hope episode.
Good tidbits there.
Austin talking about the latest scores for their wine,
which is number seven in the world on Wine Enthusiast.
Right.
And also just some really good insights, I think,
about how they've been doing business in COVID
and getting closer to their customers and doing things so really meaty uh episode and uh really enjoyed
that getting some good feedback so yeah no it's been good um and you were also um in another
podcast this week uh and that episode you know we'll try to share it on our channels too um but
that that's coming out in a couple weeks so that but that's exciting that you know that was happening this week too um how's the rest of your week been it's
been good uh we've been busy with work i mean you know we're always busy i guess so i think that's
what people naturally say but like we do mean it around here at the radcast when we're busy we are
busy that is very true uh There's always something going on.
We've got a few new clients in the door and working on that and new opportunities.
And so it's good.
It's just kind of one thing after the next.
And, you know, my wife had a follow-up surgery this week, and she's good.
But dealing with family stuff and the boys, we are 2-1 in our basketball league.
We had a first loss by a point last week.
A couple of our players were out, though.
So we were a little shorthanded.
But, you know, boys basketball, fourth grade.
Yeah, exactly.
I think I take it way more serious than they do. I, fourth grade. Yeah, exactly.
I think I take it way more serious than they do.
I feel like that's standard, though. I feel like that's, like, normal anymore.
You know, it's not about who wins or loses,
as long as you don't lose.
Right.
And as long as it's not you not losing.
I'm, like, yelling at the refs last week,
and I'm, like, what am I doing?
It's just, like, you know, not in a bad way.
I wasn't that dad or anything.
I'm the coach.
But I was definitely starting to get like, wait, you know, questioning calls.
And I'm like, all right, just relax.
Right.
Like, come on here.
Yeah.
No, I get that.
I get that.
I feel like we have a lot of just things that happened this week that is definitely just
worth mentioning.
As far as just kind of other things that were going on,
obviously Monday this week we started out with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
And that brought in actually a couple points of our news topic today.
And one of that is the Atlanta Hawks had a jersey specially made honoring MLK.
And actually the Pope, like the Pope, yeah, the Pope like blessed it. And I just
think that's so cool that they, you know, are able to incorporate that, you know, as part of,
you know, what they needed it to do. And anyway, it's super cool. And that's just one thing that's
happening. Did you see that? Did you see the news about that? I didn't until you brought it up.
I checked it out.
It was pretty cool.
Yeah, no, it's super cool.
It's been a weird week from the intermixing of you have Martin Luther King Day on Monday.
You have, you know, a African-American, you know, vice president coming into office.
You have the strangeness that's been the political climate that we've had.
It's been just an odd mixture of news.
And emotional.
And emotional.
The news has felt emotional.
I think everybody's a little off you know from like just the like
catching their breath all right you know we have a different president no matter how you felt about
it yeah they're in office we've had you know these you know monumental days you know that
and then it's like you still have covid kind of like so it's just been it's just it's just i don't
even want to call it negative it's just been been a weird climate of a week with all of those things kind of coming together.
Absolutely.
But I did like that once I saw the Hawks thing.
It was cool.
Oh, super cool.
And I love the integration.
And it was cool, especially being right down the road in Atlanta.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Did you see or listen to Amanda Gorman's poem that she did at the inauguration?
Because it was beautiful.
I did not.
Oh my, it was a beautiful poem.
And I was just so much.
We were so busy.
Like, you know, the inauguration was yesterday.
Yeah.
And, or two days ago.
The, and it was just a busy,
like I watched like snippets up on the news.
Right.
You know, like after it,
but I just didn't catch some of the more, I don't know, meat of it.
It was just all the highlights.
Right.
Like short highlights, you know.
No, totally.
I totally get that.
Yeah, I know.
But that was one thing that happened.
Something else that had kind of taken place, whether it was this week or not, the SAT,
which I think is interesting.
I hated taking the standard eye testing when I was like trying to get into college.
But the SAT is removing the essay portion and a couple subject portions, I'm pretty sure as well.
But they're removing that because basically AP testing and other kinds of testing are becoming like the standard to see if you can handle college level anymore.
And it's not the SAT anymore.
And it's just like,
you know,
this SAT was so expensive and it was like all these extra steps and things.
And it really takes away from even just trying to write because you're so
focused on making sure your formula is okay for the exam.
You're not even worried about the content anymore.
So like,
I'm personally glad they took it away,
but you know,
you know,
there's like,
if,
if we added sound effects to this,
it'd be like the student sound.
No,
exactly.
Like,
you know,
that's how kids are feeling,
you know,
no more essay part.
Look,
I remember how big a deal the SAT was and toiling over.
Like,
like I,
I'm going to be honest.
I've never really toiled over studying.
I'm that kid that could read something once and I memorized it.
Now, you could ask me two days later and I probably don't remember half of it,
but I was a good memorizer.
But I do remember how big of a deal all the preparation and all this stuff
when you're getting ready for those, you know, the preparation exam.
Seriously.
How much stuff that goes into preparing for the SAT.
Oh, my gosh.
It wasn't even about the content anymore.
Yeah.
It was like just making sure you knew what you were doing
before you even walked in the room.
I know.
How many number two pencils do I have?
Are they all sharpened?
Yeah, exactly.
Okay.
But not having to write the essay, hey, God.
They come up with that, what?
I don't want to age myself.
No, right? Right? No, honestly. Honestly. At least three months ago for you, right? hey god i could they come up with that what i don't want to age myself 25 years ago no right
right no honestly honestly at least at least three months ago for you right yeah it's hilarious no
it was like seven years ago and i think about it which is like actually a long time ago like that
damn you are getting old yeah i know i know gosh you have one birthday and then they all just become
the same thing so um no but that's happening and so congratulations to you young
kids out there that are not having to do that hellish portion of the sat anymore props to you
times are changing times are definitely changing the last like random thing that has kind of you
know hit our radar at least is um netflix is creating a shuffle play and i'm so excited for
this feature so it's supposed to release the first part of 2021.
The date is not completely confirmed yet, but I like this anyway, because if you're
stuck and you're like, I don't know what I'm going to watch today.
And you're just like browsing and browsing and you're basically watching more trailers
than you are watching any portion of a show.
You know, I guess this shuffle feature is essentially created based on your algorithm of your Netflix channel and, or your profile and just your history, um, to generate
something that they think you would like. And that's just kind of the idea of the shuffle play,
but so smart, right? I love it. Uh, I I'm, I'm looking forward to it cause I get paralysis from
analysis. Uh, my wife makes fun of me because I, I'm, i'm the guy that i read reviews and i do all
these things like i'm like that guy and so i'll get like bogged down with that so just to be able
and they do make recommendations are usually pretty accurate like you'll get an email like
you should check out these two new shows but if i can just hit a button uh and then start something
it's the only thing that's hard about hard about Netflix is sometimes it takes a couple episodes
to kind of get into it.
There's nothing more disappointing than getting two episodes in.
You're like, I don't.
And it doesn't happen often.
They make a lot of great shows, and I would say eight out of ten times
I like them well enough to keep going.
But those two times, boy, it's like, damn.
I could have started something else i know i
know i totally get that i i totally get that i've done that before and i'm just like i just wasted
like you know how but they just crossed 200 million subscribers i mean i've watched i keep up
my stock watch i'm watching and like jeez louise they keep going up with all the competition coming
too so but they've but they're investing like i mean the
billions like i don't know i forget what i saw it was in content development like you know because
it's that's what it takes i mean you gotta keep putting out the great shows get people subscribing
i mean that's what that's what it's all about yeah and anyway yeah i mean i love the shuffle
though oh my gosh yeah and just better be good i know there's no telling what my mix is
though because we do have different accounts for the kids but occasionally we'll be in mine and
watch something i mean there's no telling i'm probably going to get like some cartoon version
of i don't know sherlock holmes because like it's like they don't the algorithm's going to be like i
don't know how to compute what they want. Okay.
I give them,
you know,
cause I want to be like all this strange stuff,
but like,
but like then the kids watch a couple of things on our account or whatever.
And I'm like,
Oh boy.
So they do it versus the kids.
We have a kid's one,
but occasionally if you click into like the wrong one,
you know,
and we're sitting there usually
sort of like get into adult programming or something but you know if you watch like a
kid it throws the algorithm off and be like what is this suggestion like come on now yeah no that's
funny that's soon within the world of ai it's going to be like make your own movie like you
know like honestly well do you remember when they did the one with,
uh,
the bandersnatch or whatever it was called and you could enter,
like you could enter in the choices of the main character as the movie would
play.
Choose your own adventure.
Yeah,
basically.
Yeah.
But you know,
that came out too.
So,
but anyway,
yeah,
that's kind of the things that have kind of hit our radar,
at least from a weekly perspective.
But that's all we had.
Here's Riley with the news.
Here is the rad cast news okay guys so our first topic for today um that is related to marketing more so um triller
who is a huge competitor of tiktok is um create really entering in their competition space. I don't feel like they
were ever necessarily too behind, but they're really stepping in right now. And a big ad in
the Super Bowl advocating ways you can really tailor your own profile on Triller and how you
can engage in that kind of thing. Did you have an opinion on this as far as like what this means for
their competition with TikTok?
Like what did you think about this?
Well, I think it's, for one, you have to understand the dollars that are behind this when they're running on the Super Bowl
because you're talking, you know, $5, $10, $15, $20 million
depending on the length and how many, how the quantity.
You know, if it's one and done, it's probably $5 to $10 million
that's spending to do this and so and so then you have to realize that there remain a player but it doesn't
always mean success uh i i've you know played around with triller uh it's been a few months
it was actually probably six or eight months ago cool app uh it didn't have quite the editing and, I don't know, fun factor that TikTok has.
But the content was good.
They have a lot of big partners behind it.
I'll never forget.
I think I saw that thing.
It was Snoop Dogg or something.
Oh, cool.
Like one of the original Triller influencers.
This is, I don't know, probably a year ago.
But it's interesting.
Look, there's going to be
other players in this space. You know, no one is going to sit by and let one platform dominate a
certain genre. Absolutely not. It's no different than, you know, Snapchat was kind of all the rage
with disappearing content. I'm just going to call it that instead of trying to pronounce the word
that I always butcher, But the disappearing content.
Then Instagram mimics the feature.
Yep.
Stories.
And stories and all those things.
And so Triller's been around for several years.
It's not like they're brand new.
But you're going to see people move towards where the engagement's happening.
And so you're going to see a lot of competitors in the space.
I'm anxious to – I didn't watch the spot.
Did they have the spot out yet, Triller? I didn think i just saw they were they were yeah yeah so it'll be
interesting to see how they position it and what they do i'm sure it'll be fun and either have
humor or some sentiment yeah i hope it's at least engaging or it's sure it will be well you say sure
sometimes it's like they plan all this time and you're like, well, that was it. Exactly. Sometimes you're like, oh, you stand up.
Right.
You know, this is great.
But I don't know.
We'll see.
But you're going to see more and more players in the video,
in the short form video and all this stuff.
And it's just a matter of seeing what sticks, what catches on.
But they're spending a lot of money to get on the Super Bowl.
That is correct. Yeah. It's interesting. what what catches on but they're spending a lot of money to get on super bowl that is that is
correct yeah um it's interesting you kind of bring up mobile a little bit and that's definitely
kind of what's happening in our next topic as well um lexus has created a new car model but
it's based on a poll they took on a light when they did a live stream feed on twitch um and i
really liked this because they're bringing in the
mobile engagement. They're bringing in the users that are streaming in and then they're basically
like, okay, how, what is the new car going to look like? And then it's basically like this poll to
like kind of create this car essentially. And, um, obviously it's way more, you know, detailed
than that, but I liked it and I love the engagement especially because they're trying to hit that younger crowd and um but anyway loved that um i think it's it's again validation for
the size scope and breadth of esports and what's happening in video games and all that we talked
about it on other episodes you had kfc you've got mountain dew other brands that are that are
venturing into this cream cheese yeah cheese. Yeah, Philadelphia cream cheese.
But Lexus actually building a car around it just shows you what they think of the market,
what they think of the opportunity.
And look, it's an affluent group.
It usually, if you look at the data,
it's a pretty affluent group,
especially the middle age,
when I say middle age, I'm talking Gen Z.
I'm not talking about kids here,
but the Gen Z millennials that are video gamers
are typically, you know, in some type of IT space or some kind of professional
in something, and they make decent money.
And so it's not out of the realm that a Lexus, you know, being, you know,
that mid-tier luxury vehicle, it makes sense.
And again, if you see Lexus playing in this space, they've done the data,
they've rocked the numbers. They know the impact that this can have. It's smart for them to get
into an emerging market. And, you know, it'll be interesting to see, you know, I didn't see what
the actual model was. Did they, did they, had they picked it yet or they were going to pick it?
I think if I remember right, they were going to to pick it and it was something that from the poll like the result of the poll is what determined
the model of the car um i just honestly i don't remember off the top of my head if it was
established or not in that streaming i know you get this thing in mind of like
is it gonna have like games built into the backseat or something?
Do you remember?
Have your friends over and, you know, y'all can take a spin and park somewhere and play video games.
I don't know.
Or if it's just going to be a cool looking car, you know.
Yeah, it could be a mixture of both. Because I even remember, like, when I was younger and, you know, you'd be driving somewhere and you just, like, flip down the little TV and the SUV.
Like, I imagine it might be something even to that effect too,
which would be interesting to play into.
But no, there's that piece of news too.
And another news,
Stella is partnering up with Blue Apron
to create a specialized menu for the big game,
which is February 7th.
The big game.
Yeah.
You know why they call it that, right?
Because isn't it like a thing you can't say the Super Bowl or something like that?
There you go.
Because you don't want to.
That's how people get around like using like an advertising.
You'll see like someone promoting a TV.
Come buy a TV for the big game.
Right.
Because if they use the word Super Bowl, they get sued, you know,
because it's trademarked.
Right, right, right.
And so they say the big game.
Anyway.
Yeah.
I digress there.
But yes.
Fun piece of information there.
Yeah, no, but super cool that they're doing that.
And again, I just think it shows the scope of, you know,
cross industry and just making sure you're staying together and, you know,
having this common goal.
And I like that aspect because I think we're seeing more brands really get into this space
of, OK, we might have two completely different products, but there's a way to merge this
together for our larger audience.
And I like that.
I think that's really cool.
And it's sentimental.
You know, we're all getting in that space.
I think it's good.
Good play.
I think it's good.
And, you know, what I don't know, Blue Apron, we've tried all these at our house,
like all of them.
We've gone through Fresh Direct or something like that.
There's like 27 names, Blue Apron.
The only thing I don't like about,
I like the integration of the partners and the brands with Stella
and them doing this.
It makes a lot of sense.
You've got people staying at home, less people going out.
Super Bowl is usually home anyway for the big party, for the big game.
Yeah, because that's trademarked too, isn't it?
The big party?
No, well, the other way of saying it.
We're trademarking it today.
The big party.
The big party.
But I guess you've got to cook it yourself. I like it when. The big party, the big party. Um, but, uh,
I guess you got to cook it yourself.
Like,
I like it when it's already done though.
Like we,
we went through those meals and like,
I'm like,
it's just gotta be cooked.
Cause Nicole's like,
it's delicious.
Like all the food,
but it was like,
she spent 25 minutes and like,
she's got 17 things out on the counter.
And I'm like,
and we both work.
And so it's like,
honey,
like,
can we get like you
know one of these pre-made ones like whatever because y'all don't want her dealing with it
or me dealing with it right right right you know we take turns like cooking and stuff and so like
like I don't want to put all this stuff together but yeah I I tried them once or twice like when
I was in college and I just i i'm just not a big cook
i just don't really enjoy it so to do all the extra steps what's like a super bowl menu item
like is that when i go i think pizza wings buffalo chicken buffalo chicken yeah yeah buffalo chicken
dip or like oh my gosh i i lied there is one thing i can make it's really it's a really easy dip but
it's like a really good taco dip.
It is so good.
I can't have it anymore
because of the amount of dairy in it,
but like it's so good.
And it's like,
I'm a dip person.
Like I am a grazer.
Like I'll give you the recipe
because you actually might really like this one.
I'm like,
yeah,
you give me a chip and a dip
and yeah,
just let me go sit in a corner somewhere.
I'm like,
yeah,
right,
right,
right,
right.
No,
exactly.
No, but i'm looking forward
to the game it's exciting but it's actually funny because we're talking about um just we're getting
into this alcohol conversation ironically in the middle of dry january but truly seltzers decided
to do try january try january i love this it's targeted for millennials and gen z the ones that aren't
participating in dry january to try january and try these like i think they're like exclusive
even truly flavors like they look very tea tea in their new lemonade the truly seltzer
they have uh tea in them or something a lemonade tea or something oh nice almost like a twisted
tea and i like those lemonade ones they're pretty good especially low carbs like i'm trying to watch my carb count i'll
drink those or like an ultra i've been on ultra kick lately yeah but the uh i i saw the tri
january and i'm like i don't have a problem with it like i'm fine but it was like it kind of was
like that was it kind of rubbing it in the face of, is it going too far?
People are trying to stay dry.
You're just going, no, just drink.
Just keep drinking.
Yeah, but I mean, it's an interesting concept.
I think it's great.
I don't know.
I get why.
I was thinking more because now it's the world we live in.
It was less that it bothered me.
I kind of look at things
and I go,
well,
is the PC police
going to come out
in every single thing?
I'm like,
are they going to get mad
at this too?
Not that I care,
but I just can see it
like ruining a good idea.
Yeah.
Definitely a good idea.
I think it's a great idea
and I think it's super,
I think it's clever
just the nature of targeting,
especially more my generation,
the ones that aren't necessarily
doing dry cheating.
We're definitely not. Oh yeah, no, we't necessarily doing dry cheating. We're definitely not.
We're not the boomers.
We're the boozers.
These dates.
Drink, don't drink.
That's what I'm saying.
If you also don't like it, then just drink.
Just do everything in moderation, including moderation.
That was profound.
Abe Lincoln.
Oh, whoops. It was profound profound four score and seven years ago at
least they say i think abe lincoln gets like one of those like it gets credited with all kinds of
stuff i'm pretty sure that one was abe lincoln that's that's actually funny that's funny um no
and then our last piece of news today is walmart is trying to establish themselves as the delivery
and pickup hub basically of like groceries and retail and basically everything.
Interesting, though, they're really trying to level up against Amazon.
And I feel like even the Target delivery service or, you know, that kind of thing, too.
So, yeah, you saw this.
What about it, like, really sparked your interest on that?
Well, Walmart's been playing catch up to Amazon.
And now they're catching up quickly.
They're doing a good job.
They bought Jet, which was like a contender in the e-com space for a little while.
This was like five years ago, I think.
And they've done a really good job creating that omni-channel approach.
It used to be terrible where you'd have no idea what was in stock at a store versus what was online.
They did a really good job with this.
And then in 2017, they first trialed this direct-to-refrigerator,
like direct-to-kitchen.
Cute.
Like literally, and I know people are going to probably go towards COVID,
but they're picking this back up where literally people come with a key to your house and they stock your refrigerator and your pantries.
You're stocked.
They keep it stocked. They come in, they put them in
so when you come back home
you've got a full jug of milk, you've got your
pantry stocked and
supposedly they wear body cameras and all
this stuff so that everything's security
and that's why
I thought this was interesting. I did not know that.
Because I wondered how people
like supposedly started to take off and then it slowed down a bit and now with covid like i don't
know how people are going to feel about this but that is the notion that literally someone comes
in and keeps your entire pantry and refrigerator stocked all right direct direct to kit direct to
kitchen okay so the question is would you sign up for that service
how does that service make you feel because i will tell you right now i don't know that i would
be comfortable you're a single female well yeah well i mean that's what i'm saying like how many
single like like i feel like the people they might be trying to target like i would i would not do
that because i also like i just i don't know If you're in a fluent community and you've got security in your house
and you've signed up for it, I don't know.
Would you do it?
I would think about it.
It's a safe answer.
I could see how, again, with a busy household and with them coming in like if there was enough parameters
set up just being able to come home and it's done because look i can tell you this firsthand
two nights ago you know my wife sends me i've had a hell of a day and it's just been busy and
nicole had to work late uh she's an assistant principal, and she was working a basketball game.
And she texted me to go pick up the groceries that had already been –
they were already at Harris Teeter.
Oh, okay, okay.
To pick up.
Yeah.
She'd done the delivery thing on it, but I had to go pick them up.
Okay.
I got Nash.
We went and got the groceries.
I get them.
They put them in the car.
It's nice.
we went and got the groceries I get them
they put them in the car
it's nice
but the worst part of groceries
is getting them
from your car
up
into your house
and
putting them up
yes
because I've
I've had a long day
I'm tired
I'm just ready to like
veg
and chill with Nash
and you know
read a book with him
and like
maybe eat some dinner
yeah
and I spent
you know
lugging the groceries up right into the
you know we live in a loft so we had to come up with a later and and bringing them inside and like
oh my god i stared at him and going i'm not gonna leave these for nicole but i thought about it
i stared at the bags i put the cold stuff up but i'm like uh not because it's like her job no but
it was just like i'm at you know it's like i didn't i'm just gonna wait a second on this but i uh but no i did it i didn't i uh i did pause i put all the cold stuff up
and then i ate with nash yeah and then i put the rest of it up begrudgingly yeah not because it's
not my job but i just was tired if i do it so like i could see where not having to deal with that and you also probably buy,
so again,
this is families.
This is true.
We buy for four boys
and two grown adults.
So six people.
So when we go
to the grocery store,
you know,
we come prepared.
We got to,
those are like dual buggies here.
Like, you know,
sometimes.
You know,
we try to buy,
you know,
Nicole goes to the store
like every,
like four or five days. Like, or between the two of us one of us is the grocery store right right and so that's where this the people that deal with that this is seems attractive
you sort of go all right what are the security measures all right i think i can get over that
especially once you come home and it was done it's done yeah so i don't know i get that though and maybe it becomes something like you get a consistent delivery
guy that's no different than like someone cleaning your house or like hey i get that you know it
becomes like the old school milkman you know like back in the day the milk guy delivered the milk
and you got to know the milkman you get to know your food stocker yeah i get that though i but i
will tell you this i have a trick to the taking
up because i am also in an apartment with elevator and parking garage all that kind of stuff like a
big trolley that and this is also for anyone else that's in an apartment so i thought about this and
it makes so much more sense i have like a trolley thing yeah that i just load it all into there i
just take it all one wagon yep a wagon yeah yeah, a wagon. Yeah. Yeah, that's nice and helps me, you know, my little puny arm.
Wagons can't even touch.
Like, the wagon gets full with, like, the first four bags from our car.
Well.
We had that double wagon.
Yeah.
And so.
Dual load.
Again, it's quite the process.
Yes.
And I could see where this would take off.
And Walmart's wanting to own it and they've
definitely caught up on the e-com space so they're up 300 percent in e-com sales like the last six
months and so which it's only gonna like that i've said this over and over again that genie's
not going back in the bottle it's uh people are used to that but that's why i think this is one
of those that if you got once you get comfortable with it you got used to it
not have to deal with
putting those groceries up
like I do
right
no right
honestly watch me in a month
I'm like oh yeah
my delivery is at my apartment
yeah
but it's probably
what's gonna end up happening
but no that's the news
for today
