connection or purpose. Together they inspire confidence, joy, and resilience everywhere they go.
We're so proud to celebrate Lieutenant Dan and Laura on Robbins Nest.

I am so excited to share with you this incredible story of Lieutenant Dan.
Yes, Lieutenant Dan is in Robbins Nest today with Laura.
Laura, and I have to say this story just brings tears to my eyes because it's a story of hope and resilience and most importantly the power of love.
Look at Lieutenant Dan. What an incredible dog. Hi, sweetheart. Hi, you have a great story to tell. And Lieutenant Dan is our emerging shelter and hero dog category. Emerging Hero and Shelter Dog category was created a number of years ago to really celebrate those amazing dogs.
who are really ordinary dogs, or they have some special story that inspires us all,
that brings us hope and brings us so much heart, and it really shows the incredible power of the human-animal bond.
So Lieutenant Dan, congratulations on being this year's Emerging Hero and Shelter Dog category finalist
and winner of that beautiful category. And you, my love, have a great story as well as great kisses.
Please, Laura, welcome.
Thank you.
Thank you for having us.
We're so excited to be here.
We're thrilled to have you, and you must tell us a lot about you as well.
You have a great story to tell, and then I want to hear about Lieutenant Dan.
So, Laura, please share with us in Robin's Nest all about you.
Yeah, so I have been an animal lover my whole life.
My parents probably whether or not they loved it, but bringing home animals since I was a little kid.
If I could find it and bring it home, I was trying to bring it home.
getting to keep them sometimes.
Yeah.
And then fell in love with veterinary medicine.
So I've been working in veterinary medicine.
Oh gosh.
It starts to get hard to count the years because it's a little bit on and off through school.
But very consistently now for 18 years that I've been in veterinary medicine.
And then recently into shelter medicine and fell in love with that as well as fostering.
We actually took home our first foster dog.
every bit of, oh dear, probably 17 years ago.
And I've lost track now as to how many that have come through that we have helped get to their new homes,
whether it's just been they needed a soft place to land or they needed some medical care and needed some additional love and support or needed a chance.
You know what I love, first of all, for everyone who works in the shelter of medicine space, a huge kudos and a huge shout out from all of us at American Humane Society.
because I know how hard it is, how challenging it is to see animals come in.
Often they've been neglected or abused and they really are ill and they need that second chance.
And it's shelter medicine on the front lines to save those animal lives.
And that's you.
And not only do you do that in your daytime, but you foster at night.
So really, truly, what a humane hero, Laura is.
I'm so glad you shared your story because I meet a lot of foster moms and dads and really humane heroes.
So thank you.
Yeah, thank you.
So tell us about how Lieutenant Dan, who's a big kisser, by the way.
How he came into your life and what he does.
Yeah.
So I actually cannot take credit for first finding him.
My husband did.
My husband saw him on social media and was like, look at this amazing dog.
He is different.
He's got this severe deformity of his hind legs and his tail.
And he's out here running on two legs with no cares that he is different and so happy.
and shows me this amazing dog and next thing I know is like he needs a home he he needs a family he
needs someone to give him that like long-term care and love and give him a chance and I was like I'm
just going to make a phone call my husband's like I know what that means so one phone call turned
into a transport um actually from Florida he was born in North Carolina to um just a family who
relinquished him to a rescue in Florida when they realized his deformity and the rescue was
very small, so they weren't fully sure what that meant for him long term.
Yes. So they put him up for adoption hoping someone would give him a chance and investigate
what his long-term life was going to look like. And we wanted to be that family for him.
So he came on a transport and we met them partway and picked him up and he's going to nibble
on me and brought him home to Ohio. So he got a full round of tests and work up by multiple
board certified doctors at the other hospital that I work at. He saw surgeons, neurologist,
criticalists. He got every test you can think of to be like, is this going to progress? Is he going
be okay? What do we need to be worried about? Yes. Luckily, nothing was progressive. We did just
determine that unfortunately his legs were too severe to be corrected or to save any
part of them. And they were causing him a lot of pain already, even as a five-month-old puppy.
Oh. Oh. So they did recommend a bilateral hind limb amputation to help prevent long-term pain as well as to take pressure off of his spine, his shoulders, and to prevent pressure shores and drag sores. He did have his tail, but he broke his tail a couple months after we adopted him. He didn't even know he broke it. He couldn't feel it. So it had to be amputated. It was part of his deformity. And ever since then, like the change is amazing. He can run.
more easily. He can get around more easily. He could roll on his back after his tail
imputation when it was healed. He realized he could roll on his back for his first time because his
tail wasn't in the way and he was so excited. He's just on his back, like back and forth. Like,
this is great. Oh, I love this. So and now here we are seven and a half years later.
Seven and a half years later. He is doing fantastic. He's, he's had a couple other medical hurdles.
He is a cancer fighter and survivor. He's had two soft tissue sarcomas and did have to have
full course radiation a couple of years ago.
My goodness gracious.
Can you imagine what this talk has been through from a medical standpoint?
Amazing.
His team is amazing.
He gets a little bit of special treatment when he sees his radonk team.
They would let him run around the office with him during his treatment days and spoil him.
I love that.
How could you not spoil Lieutenant Dan, though?
Oh, my goodness.
Well, what an amazing story to tell.
And a story of fostering special needs, pups is really an incredible.
But, you know, he does more, doesn't he?
He does. No, he's, he's amazing.
Like, taking him on and realizing he doesn't care, he's different, he doesn't care he has these challenges.
He still wants to go and live life to the fullest.
If a dog can do that, which I feel like they can.
He comes every day.
He's up.
He's happy.
He's smiling.
He literally does smile and ready to tackle everything.
He is an adventure pup through and through.
He loves to hike. We paddleboard. We paddleboard. I love this. I love this. You're a paddle. I don't even paddle board for you. He loves to swim. He's very excited to hit the dog beach while we're here. So, and then he is now also a sort of a five therapy dog. We had to get through some of his medical hurdles. And once we did, we worked on that in the past year. So he visits, we spend most of our time at nursing homes. And then we work with a program that helps.
disabled adults and he visits there. We've done a couple school visits too, but he really likes the
adult programs and giving that extra attention to those people. You know, what's so amazing is that
can you imagine if you're a disabled adult and you wake up and you know, you don't feel well
and maybe the sun isn't shining as bright and then who comes in the door, this ray of sunshine,
Laura and Lieutenant Dan, and you get to see the happiness and the joy on this incredible dog's face,
as I see nothing but joy in this dog and certainly tons of kisses.
Can you imagine how that would brighten my day and give me hope?
So I love what you do with disabled adults, and I love that you go into nursing homes too
and bring that special ray of hope and sunshine and importantly unconditional love.
Because this is a story of unconditional love, and I know how you love him.
The minute you met him, you fell in love with him.
Absolutely.
And it absolutely was not conditioned on anything.
In fact, you gave even more of your heart because he has special needs,
requiring a lifetime of different types of medical intervention, so to speak.
Yeah.
It's wonderful.
Do you have a special story of someone who Lieutenant Dan touched?
Yeah.
There's been so many.
But early on, when we were still just, like, loving him and learning about him,
we made him a social media account and just to share like it's fun and the people who reached out we
had a couple people who reached out who aren't even from our state who were like I've really been
struggling lately I'm undergoing a lot of medical problems and I just felt like I didn't know what to do
and was really depressed and they're like I see your dog and that he's like I can do this and they're
like it gave me hope that I can do this too it gave me that strength and that courage and that
smile and that love for life that I needed. So we had some people reach out and they thanked us
online. It was very nice. Better than nice. Number one, it's wonderful that you're sharing his story
on social because look, someone you don't even know. You're giving them the hope to get up the next
morning. That's saving lives. You know that, Laura? Oh, sorry. No, it's very emotional. No, it is.
It's a tissue moment. It's so amazing because I know what it takes every day to take care of a special
needs a dog. It's not easy on you.
No. And you work. And you're saving
other pups and other animals
and you're married and you're living
your life and then you're
so brave and courageous and sharing
the stories and then you're
bringing people so much life.
What's his superpower?
His superpower is definitely
bringing joy and smiles.
Absolutely 100%.
His smile and his joy for life
I feel like that is his superpower
because you can't be around this
dog and not want to smile or be happy. Like it's impossible. I know. I mean, we're hearing these
stories of what he can do, but I can't help but smile when I look at him because he breaks me so
happy and I'm just in the room with him. I just can't imagine anyone being sad when they see you,
my friend, when they see you and all the kisses that you give. It's so wonderful. So tell me a little
bit about what the Hero Dog Awards means to you, Laura. Yeah. And your husband who actually found
him for you, too. Absolutely.
No, it has been a great honor to have this opportunity to have any shelter and rescue dog
recognized for the amazing things they do.
But I love the chance on a handicapped dog to show that they can still have a great life,
that you can take a chance on that underdog, give them that second chance,
and let them still be that great life partner for you and that great dog companion
and that they can do everything a normal dog can do.
They can be different and still give.
you that happiness and you can give them that happiness. And I love that that helps share and
promote that for these dogs. And I hope that it inspires other people to take a chance on the
underdog and give them a chance at life. Give the underdog a chance. Visit your local shelter.
This is the message that Lieutenant Dan reminds us is visit your local shelter. Look at those
dogs with disabilities and special needs and see if you can open your heart and your home
into bringing the next Lieutenant Dan into yours.
And trust me, I can see from the tears in Laura's eyes
how her love and her passion for this pup has changed her life.
And I know it's changed so many others
because you've been so brave to share the story.
So glad you're in Robins' Nest today.
Congratulations on this incredible win.
And Lieutenant Dan, I'm so proud to know you.
Yes, I am, and I love your story.
And I can't wait to get more kisses from you as we celebrate you
every single day.
Congratulations.
